Petal
BY JORDAN MAINZER
A couple Tomorrow Never Knows gems and an annual treasure.
Petal & Bernice, Schubas
Petal’s Magic Gone was one of our favorite albums of last year; contributor Lauren Lederman wrote that it “documents a moment for Kiley Lotz...where coming to terms with her own queerness and mental health comes to a head.” Expect to hear lots of the latest record tonight at Schubas.
Toronto whimsical indie pop band Bernice will play songs from last year’s inventive Puff: In the Air Without a Shape. The band, led by singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Robin Dann, takes equal influence from soundscapes and R&B and quiet storm to make for a wonderfully percussive and soulful take on a genre that too often suffers from preciousness sans feeling.
Seattle grunge pop band Great Grandpa and Sir Babygirl (the queer pop project of Brooklyn-via-New Hampshire artist Kelsie Hogue) open.
Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Lincoln Hall
When we interviewed Sarah Shook last year after seeing her perform a stripped down acoustic set at Bloodshot Records, she said that her band “amplifies all the emotions and really draws out the spirit of the thing.” So it sounds like seeing her with the proper Disarmers is the way to go. Shook also mentioned to us that she has plenty of new songs (she played a new one at Bloodshot), though it remains to be seen whether she’ll perform any of them in her headlining slot tonight. The band is likely to play one or both of the two new songs they released towards the end of last year, the quintessentially high and lonesome “The Way She Looked At You” and the honky tonk “Devil May Care”.
Mount Moriah frontwoman H.C. McEntire and Half Gringa, the moniker of songwriter Izzy Olive, open.
Tedeschi Trucks Band, Chicago Theatre
Tedeschi Trucks Band return for their annual residency at Chicago Theatre starting tonight (they’re also playing tomorrow and next Friday and Saturday nights). They’re releasing a new record, Signs, next month. Instrumentally, the record is definitely a band showcase, as on the horn-laden funk of “Walk Through This Life”, blues guitar jam “Still Your Mind”, and uptempo country bop “Hard Case”. But the songwriting and lyricism and soul of the record is really thanks to Susan Tedeschi. She sings about overcoming on “I’m Gonna Be There?” and offers an inspiring ode to life on “Strengthen What Remains”. “Shame” is a gripping, gospel-influenced lament of our current state of political affairs. And “The Ending”, perhaps the record’s best song, was written in tribute to many of the band’s friends who passed away during the recording of Signs, including Butch Trucks, Gregg Allman, Leon Russell, and B.B. King. But it’s Colonel Bruce Hampton to whose final moments Tedeschi pays tribute, all over acoustic blues picking. It’s a moving end to an emotional album, of which the band should play at least a few songs tonight.

Petal Comes to Rough Trade NYC with Sir Babygirl and Cave People
Inspired by the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Pedro the Lion, Kiley Lotz has been performing and recording as Petal—working with a rotating cast of bandmates—ever since forming the soulful, melancholic band six years ago in Scranton, Pa. The group’s debut long-player, Shame (stream it here), came out in 2015. “Her imagery is rich and often moves like poetry, knowing just when to slip out of sense into a region that feels blurred and indefinite, yet true to the lived experience of love and panic—all this atomic activity beneath an otherwise placid surface,” said Pitchfork. “The lingering quality of Shame: Lotz’s ability to translate the imprecision of a kiss, the quality of a streetlight, the decay of a shadow into a memory so powerful it consumes everything. Shame is an album of preserved traces, of things that were.” Lotz has since left for New York City and then moved back to central Pennsylvania, and she returned last June with the second Petal studio album, the raw, personal Magic Gone (stream it here). “Listen carefully, because littered throughout are moments that appear throwaway but are truthfully priceless,” raved the Line of Best Fit. “Lotz knows how to craft her work, using every moment to her advantage resulting in an album that’s an absolute indie-emo masterpiece.” Currently touring the country, Petal headlines Rough Trade NYC on Friday night, with Sir Babygirl and Cave People opening the show.

1, 8 & 99?
oh shit hi. i didn’t think anyone would ask yay. ok so 6 of the songs you listen to most?Girls… (finish the sentence); Boys… (finish the sentence)If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say?
six songs i listen to the most recently are probs…sleepover by hayley kiyoko here comes a thought by rebecca sugar the eye by brandi carlilestardust by petalnew years eve by mal blum and watercolors by mal blum
the first think i thought when i saw that was “girls like girls like boys do nothin new” so we’re gunna go with that🏳️🌈
that’s actually so hard but probably something like treat everyone with kindness no matter what. kind people are so important. kindness goes around. there are some shit people out there but that doesn’t mean you have to be one too. the world needs less shitty people. be one of them. spread love and kindness more than anything else. wether you’re gay, straight, black, white, 9 or 99. spread love. and. kindness. there’s so many messed up things in the world. some we can’t control and some we can. so control what you can. like your words and your actions to others. you never know what someone is going through. someone could be an inch away from killing themselves. so rethink that passive text or comment. everyone deserves happiness and love. so don’t judge others for how they love their lives if they’re not hurting you or anyone else you shouldn’t judge them or say hurtful things to or about them. let them live their best life’s and be their best selves. because everyone deserves that kind of happiness. everyone deserves love.
that’s just something that’s very important to me. so that’s my two cents. thanks for asking! ask again ;)

Petal announces 'Magic Gone' out June 15th, pre-orders available now.
On June 15th, Pennsylvania’s Petal will release ‘Magic Gone’, a 10-song declaration of personal liberation and a look into the mind and soul of singer/songwriter Kiley Lotz.
"’Magic Gone’ is the physical and sonic representation of me fighting for my right not only to survive but live all while coming to terms with encroaching adulthood,” says Lotz. “I was a closeted queer person struggling with chronic mental health disorders; terrified that if I tried to deal with these two major issues in my life I would lose everyone and everything I loved. Coming out was the beginning of a long and continuing process of self-actualization, of taking a hard look at myself and the problems I had and how I could fix them. This record is the result of being the most honest I have ever been in my life, and the constant battle of overcoming the thought that, “maybe if I were just someone else completely, everything would be better.” ‘Magic Gone’ is about letting go of the anger induced by all the paranoia, anxiety, guilt and pain, and embracing the magic of your own endurance and hoping for the best."

Love is definitely not as magical as the title of Petal’s latest single might suggest...
Though it begins with a delicate piano refrain, ‘Stardust’ soon roars to life with 90s alt-rock tenacity as the Pennsylvanian singer/songwriter (born Kiley Lotz) offers an amusingly droll view of breakups: ’Now we’re living in shitty apartments with mismatched dishes, unlike our parents/Maybe we’d make good parents?/Maybe not, I can’t say...’ As the relationship collapses, so too does the instrumental, Lotz soon delivering the final blow (‘I can’t say I didn’t love you...’
So brutal, but oh-so beautiful.
‘Stardust’ is from Petal’s second album Magic Gone, out now.

I had the pleasure of seeing Kiley Lotz open for Julien Baker, a little over a week ago. I was equally impressed with her performance, and I have a new found respect for all Singer/Songwriters. So naturally, I had to check out the rest of her works. Her honesty makes for good Feel-Trips; whenever I drive to, or from work.
This is one of two remaining color variants that are still available on the Run For Cover website. I chose the Bone A-Side / Purple B-Side option. “Shame” by Petal, is another record that deserves our attention, and being on tour with Julien Baker will surely help bring her to a wider audience, because she deserves it.
