Agostino Arrivabene - Italian painter

Arrivabene’s paintings are allegorical, surreal and/or apocalyptic themed “blue pearl colour much like that of the exhumed dead”

The third painting pictured: Martyrium S. Dorothea (2011)

This painting particularly intrigued me, there is a clear sense of pain and suffering, and it’s metamorphosis into the fantastic.

The pearl blue colour is used on extraordinary plants and flowers growing directly out of the flesh of the person’s back. The flames are painted in the background behind the woman, which is symbolic to renaissance portraits and creates an allegorical feel. It may also represent the heat and pain of dying flesh. The theme of plants growing from dying flesh is something I have included in my work, to represent my influence from the work of Anna Tsing. Arrivabene has created a hyper realistic representation of this terrifyingly beautiful image.

Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975), Martha Rosler

Rosler places emphasis on representation and using forms of mass media in order to be accessible and to promote conversation with a wider art audience. It signals an interest in real world concerns and gives her a chance to interrogate cultural forms. How is this intention translated into sculpture?

I cite her between FORM (as representation) and EVERYDAY (as theme), with no clear links to PROCESS or MATERIAL. I find her treatment of these two key themes very influential, despite operating in a distinctly different medium.

Guillermo Lorca- Chilean painter

This painting by Lorca is a perfect example of a breach between sensuality and violence. The leopard is clearly invoking a feeling of danger, foreboding terror, our natural human instincts kick in making the viewer feel very uncomfortable seeing a feline in a comforting home environment. The woman, looking directly at the viewer is very calm and also aware of the danger at hand. She seems to have trust in the leopard as it licks her forehead, also staring right at the viewer almost mockingly. The colours of the bed sheets are an innocent coral, pink but patterned almost like the leopard’s fur.

I am naturally very attracted to cats since I find them very intriguing and powerful animals, so this painting really caught my attention. The contrast of making me very uneasy and also being very beautiful and capturing, makes it hard to take my eyes off of it.
