Okay tumblr, here’s the deal.

I’m a hoarder. I have diagnosed OCD and this is one of the ways it presents in me. The ADHD does not help matters, and I am one of those people who had their mum picking up after them (until she died, then dad hired college students to clean house and I would work alongside them but somehow it never ingrained cleaning into me) and never really learned to do it myself.

Well I now live alone in an ~790-800 sq ft place with my dog with no one supervising me for three years, a year of a roommate which was stressing in other ways, and then back to being alone for the past 6 months and I told myself I’d get it all under control after RM moved out and boy howdy the place has never been this bad.

I’m gonna take an hour long nap to recharge because I wake up stupid early go work. Then I am going to loop you poor, poor internet people into my shame, because if there’s one thing I know about the internet it is that it is both the most encouraging AND belittling places to be!

I’m going to take a picture of the area I plan on working on for at least half an hour after I wake up. I am going to post it. I am NOT going to take it down until next Tuesday.

If I don’t post an updated picture of the progress by midnight, I give each and every one of you one comment to point it out how you see fit 😁 because this isn’t a horrible idea at all! I’m tired of faceplanting because of random shit but don’t care enough about myself to do something about it. But I DO care about random strangers on the internet and their opinions!

But for now leave me alone I’m so fucking tired. Cheers mates. Feel free to unfollow if you don’t wanna see the mess, it’s not like I’m putting proper OC out on this one anyway.

update on Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves: I looked up reviews for the book on Goodreads and uhh. Uhhhhhhh.

I'm taking the word "worldbuilding" away from y'all. Please stop. This book barely even has worldbuilding. It's an alien planet and all the animals are the same as Earth animals, except with weird made-up words attached, and the book has yet to explain or describe how they're even different from regular bears, foxes and rabbits.

The politics and culture are vague and developed using preachy infodumping. The planet is controlled by a corporation, and there are "scavvers" which live away from corporate control, and most inhabitants of the planet are prejudiced toward "scavvers." That's it! That's all there is!!

There seems to be a city and there's a forest, but the setting is not described well enough for me to tell how these things are spatially related to each other.

Also can we talk about how the planet is named "Tundar?"

...

Anyway. These reviewers in many cases seem to be confusing "worldbuilding" with "how vividly the setting is evoked/described," which, okay fine, but...this book's descriptions are the absolute opposite of evocative. They are so ambiguous and non-specific.

Here i've got the book I'll give examples

The protagonist's cloak, which has important sentimental value to her, has strands of "silvery-black" in it, which is important because it's connected to the scavver culture. What material? Why is it significant? How does it connect to her culture? What is it even called?? We don't know!

"She'd sing songs the scavvers passed down for generations, not the corpo-produced ones they play in bars around the Ket...those same melodies haunt my darkest dreams." Okay?? Maybe give more details so I'll care, maybe?

"The ion storms mess with most tech, especially things that send signals." (page 116) I have so many questions about this. It's repeatedly emphasized that Technology Doesn't Work on Tundar...except when it does. The wolves can be tracked down using microchips that transmit signals. The wolf races are televised using drones. All the "technology" (what that means isn't consistent) shown in the story is supposed to be constantly broken down and nonfunctional, but no one has thought to USE DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY in the "hundreds of years" the planet has been colonized.

"Something messed up when the corporations tried to calm Tundar's environment hundreds of years ago...the terraforming attempt that was supposed to stop the ice just made it worse, along with making all the species bigger and more aggressive." ????? (page 23)

And then there's the "splinter woods." There are "splinter trees" that are constantly trying to take the city back. What do they look like? What are they? Is that the only plant in the "splinter woods?"

The main glaring problem, though, is that the "splinter woods" cover the whole area of the world we're shown...which is constantly and repeatedly referred to as a "tundra."

Did the author not google "tundra???" Did she somehow miss, when researching for this book, that a forest is definitionally not a tundra?

"I say one of the few scavver phrases that has been adopted into everyday speech." Do scavvers speak a different language?? Are there different languages?? We don't know!!!

Because nothing is ever described specifically or clarified!! The dialogue is both unnaturally infodumpy and so vague. Like, the protagonist says "I can show you guys how to strip some bark from the splinter trees and mix it with a few different herbs." (page 119). I've never read anything like this before. "I tell them which animals most likely make which noises." What do you mean, most likely????

We spend a lot of time with a team of scientists, but it's not actually clarified what their actual fields are. Pana is an "expert in many scientific fields, including medicine. The main scientist says he's "not an animal expert" as if "zoologist" is too difficult to say.

The whole book is like this, whatever "Like This" is.

Let's not forget the "slightly scientific-looking junk."

Like, all the reviewers claim the world is so "vivid" and evocative and when you read the book, literally every description is like, "It looks almost like some sort of thingy."

Oh, on the subject of the cold: In the beginning, the protagonist says something about frostbite scars being distinctive of people that have lived on the planet for a while, and then...any sort of behavioral or technological adaptation to cold is Never Mentioned Again.

Like, I don't get the sense that it is cold. The way the main character dresses, acts, prepares for travel, does not suggest that she's going somewhere dangerously cold. Her cloak gets taken away from her and this is important because she's sad about it, not because the planet is deadly cold like the author tells us. The scientists don't have to wear gear or special clothing to protect themselves from cold.

It's so frustrating to hear this being called good worldbuilding I can't take it

If you're still here after me taking very long breaks--hi again, how are you doing? If you've just followed me because of BG3--hi, it's very nice to have you here.

I haven't been here for quite some time again. I thought I'd start drawing again numerous times since my last updatey post and yet I couldn't.

I'm still in pain, still haven't been diagnosed with fibromyalgia--how unusual--and the pain has gotten way worse than ever before. It's often so bad that my hand gets numb and I have to take breaks all the time. It's funny how the only time I want to draw is the time I can't draw. I'm using Baldur's Gate 3 as an escape and it's so nice to be hyped about something once more.

I think I'm going to start posting more of my unfinished art. I'm abandoning pieces all the time and they don't have to go to waste. Especially, since now it takes me longer to draw. I've always been ashamed of showing off something unfinished, but nowadays I'm much better mentally, so... why not?

I could even start posting my little ramblings like this one. Just like with unfinished art, I was always ashamed to put myself in the spotlight, to have people see the pathetic me. I'm sure many of you felt this way. We can get out of this and maybe posts like that could help me get further away from this state. Even now I'm fighting those thoughts telling me that nobody cares about this information and that the whole me--my personality and all--should stay hidden. And maybe it should, but that's boring.

I hope you are well--and if you're not--I hope that you get the help you need and deserve so much.

SISTER UPDATE (not great not terrible)

afaik eating fine despite my mum making repeated comments on her food like "ewww are you really going to eat that" etc

in a relationship with a man her age or near enough. he's got a history as a ket addict. she sold this to me as a problem that was in the past

anyway surprise! it's now lol. they've had several weekends on ket/coke lately

she's planning on moving in w/ him in about 6 months

to petersfield, where she doesnt even want to move bc all his drug friends / dealers are there and his ex, who he still hangs out with (they were together on christmas day doing drugs) and who HATES my sister + who sends her bf abusive messages about her if he posts her on social media

i was kind of like idk about this maddy this seems like it has the potential to absolutely throw a grenade into your life and turn it into a big pile of shit and she was basically like yeah maybe it'll be alright tho :)

Things you don't see

Alright, I think I've made it clear that usually when I write (and write well, not the plunky bashed out stuff) I've usually adopted the mindset of the characters I'm writing. This is great, it lets me figure out what they want instead of what I want. They almost literally write themselves.

I've not told you all that when I do fight scenes, more intricate dialogue, physical stuff, I occasionally will act them out myself to see if what I'm describing is 1. physically possible, even with my outlandish joints, and 2. believable and comfortable (or uncomfortable, as some situations require). Nothing too crazy, and I typically just let the elves do their whack elf things, but the simpler stuff.

Lately I've been thinking about clothing and more of the physical appearance side of things because that's not something I typically describe in MIC. This is due to the awkward mix of more modern and less modern/more IC canon clothing. I also find myself repeatedly mentioning Arya's double canine configuration in fics and shorts, mostly because it's a newer addition and I want to solidly establish it, and also because I just like chomp chomp elf.

Welp. A couple days ago I impulse bought several sets of individual fangs of different sizes to try out the canines. I also found my scrubs pants while doing laundry.

...I'm crazy, I really am, and despite working in an embroidery place as the sole thread gremlin, I know very little about sewing via machine and especially not sewing clothing.

But I think I'mma make my own personal Gil'ead High Risk Ward prisoner uniform. For funsies.

Updates!

Just wanted to ket everyone know some simple updates will be now occurring more possibly. 1st update is, if I a post has no colored text it is more than likely going to be a Flashback or memory hint. And the second update is I will now be posting more written details to the story as time goes on, just so I don't have to keep everyone waiting. And I'll I might also instead of drawing asks, I might just write some of them out. OR I might do just like simple sketches or colorless doodles for them. And only maybe have like main story related posts full of color and detail, stuff like that.

Was the adoptive mother of an Elf!MC a half elf, half another race ? Like half norm, or half mage/hedgewitch? In the most recent Patreon update, it is said even Elves of old age don't have gray hair, yet the MC's adoptive aunt on their mother's side is said to have it (her name was Triba I think…?). What about Zori? Did they meet MC as a baby and saw them growing into a 13 year old child in the blink of an eye? I think I remember how it was said that the other children kind of avoided the MC, but not Zori… Is that why? I don't think I had fully realized how sad an Elf!MC's childhood could be in some aspects before the last update…

Hi, good question! There wasn't time to elaborate on this, but Triba Lari was only related to MC's adopted mom by marriage. AKA MC's mom had a biological brother (dead before MC was born) who was married to Triba, so Triba is not blood-related to MC's mom and is an aunt by marriage only. In an Elven background, she was of mixed Elven blood, where her grandfather (Norm) married her grandmother (Elf), then their half-Elven kid married a full Elf and had Triba. (Is... is that three-quarters Elven? I can't make the math right in my head at the moment because it's very late, but you get the idea.)

Zori was also only half-Elven or a quarter-Elven, as noted here: I haven't really decided yet, but I'm pretty sure the non-Elvish part of them was either Ket or Hunter! So they were aging at a normal rate alongside MC. People with mixed blood were actually not that unusual in the clan (it's why no one was that pressed about taking in a Mage foundling) because they were nomadic and often ended up having to trade or interact with or even rescue people on their annual routes rather than being as sequestered and monolithic as the Elves had once been in their forested cities; just people and families who joined the clan had to live by their traditions and culture and way of life, and do their part in protecting the clan from threats. However, after the Castigation, accepting Norms into the clan was definitely more frowned upon than other Diminished races, who were similarly on the run from the Autarchy!
