tim and bernard who break up and it's nothing big, no one cheated or anything. it's just their lifestyles didn't work out well together. tim cannot give up vigilantism currently and bear cannot handle the level of danger tim puts himself in. and on the other hand, tim cannot handle the fact that bear chooses to run into danger as an emt bc he already worries about everything but now he has to worry if he'll find his boyfriend convulsing from fear gas in a random alley but also bear who felt the life drain out of darla cannot stand the thought of not helping people and runs headfirst into dangerous situation after dangerous situation hoping that every person he saves can somehow make up for the fact that he could not save darla.
(he very pointedly does not think about the fact that there was nothing he could do because if he thinks about that, he'll spiral until they have to lock him in arkham too)
and so they break up but they were tim & bernard in high school and when they started dating they balanced out the worst of each other and they became tim&bernard. and everyone who knows them, knows that they're better together but they cant be together, they refuse actually because they cannot lose another person to the violence of gotham and by the time they figure out that they cant work together as long as the other is an emt or vigilante, it's too late for both them. they've already left too many pieces of themselves in each other.
tim still knows what bear means when he says "tim" in that exasperated voice. tim still goes boneless when he hears bear say "baby" in that firm tone. bear can still read tim like a book. he still knows the right way to massage tim's neck so that tim can go to sleep. everyone at the first responders gala knows not to bother ceo drake-wayne and senior emt dowd when they're talking.
(and if they're standing a little too close to each other than what is normal, who are they to judge? everyone knows that dowd and drake-wayne have history)
and if everyone on the night shift has caught red robin with his head tucked into the crook of emt dowd's neck as emt dowd runs a soothing hand up and down the vigilante's back, well then, they just quietly back away.
(after all, dowd's one of like, five, emts that can get the bats to receive medical treatment so if turning a blind eye to whatever the fuck they have going on is what allows them to give back to their heroes, then the night shift will do it every time)
and of course, tim and bear are practical people. they loved (love) each other sure, but when your lives are fundamentally incompatible, well, you cant get too stuck on the what-ifs, that's for sure. and so they do find love with other people and yeah, maybe it's not what they expected love to be when they first fell in love with each other. it's not the bubbly, stomach-swoopy, cant stop grinning, feeling that permeated tim&bernard's early days or the i Know you/you Know me that was their middle or the quiet despair that was their end but it is contentment. and in a life with as many losses as theirs, contentment is something they hold dearly
and they're happy! truly! but sometimes, at galas when they're making each other snort champagne out their noses or in darkened alleyways when their clothes are both stained with blood or at rallies for stricter gun regulations in gotham where they both sit too close to each other, fingers enclosed around each other in a death grip, when the presenters inevitably bring up grieves
(worst school shooting in gotham in decades, there's blood on their hands and blood in their mouths and darla is dead in between both of them and there is a chasm so wide that they are screaming to get their voices across and she will always be dead and maybe this had always been the problem that she is dead and there is no coming back from that and that there is blood on their hands and blood in their mouth and blood on their han-)
but sometimes, most especially on opposite sides of the street, as life pulls them in different directions, just sometimes, they see each other and just for a second, nothing too long, the flap of a hummingbird's wings, the time it takes to blink, an electron's orbital, they look at each other and for the briefest moment, blue on brown, a barely noticeable stutter in their steps, the space between heartbeats, because this is all they will give themselves because they do not dwell on what-ifs or what-could-have-beens, or what-should-have-beens, or delusions of a softer world, their eyes meet and they think to themselves, god, in another life, i would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with him.
#what the fuck is this#the theme was wistfulness. hopefully that came across right. and like i wanted this to be all 1 text block so you feel how it all collapses#into that 1 thought they have at they end but fuckass tumblr has a 4096??? text limit for a single paragraph???? so here's multiple paragra#anyway here is my middle of the road sad timbern hc. do i think this will happen? no? is this still a fun world to play in? yeah absolutely#also super huge fan of darla haunting the narrative. darla as this chasm they cannot cross. darla as smth they shelter each other from#but also smth like a 2 way blade. it cuts them both. it will never stop cutting them. smth smth the wound will always bleed#also i cannot stress how important it is that they are happy with other people!!! they are both satisfied with other people. it's just that#they have a very specific history and they are the only two people who really know and understand that history#and also it's not that theyre unhappy with their partners but just that smtimes they look at each other and... wonder. in a softer world#maybe i could've been a chef and you could've still been a superhero and we could've still worked out. maybe we would've gotten a boat#together and maybe we could've come home to each other. maybe i could've trusted you to come home to me. maybe you could've#understood my need to help people. maybe we could've held our love as something precious.#maybe in a softer world our love wasn't something that hurt us both.#i need to lay down. im going crazy#as always i do love reading yalls thoughts in the reblogs and replies!!!#bernard dowd#dc#tim drake#timbern#timber

I love Elden Ring lore, because it's like George R. R. Martin wrote a world heavily steeped in Norse Mythology, and then Miyazaki went to read a book about Norse Mythology, got to the part where it said the gods knew they were going to die, but accepted it because it was ~fate~ and their ~noble obligation~ and ~necessary~. That upon their deaths, and after the Ragnarok, the world would be born fresh and lush and new and just...
Miyazaki: [looks at Norse Mythology]
Miyazaki: [looks at Dark Souls]
Miyazaki: [looks at Norse Mythology]
Miyazaki: [looks at Dark Souls]
Miyazaki: Pff, yeah right, like they'd ever just give up THAT easily.

the funniest moment I ever had in a trust was in the hydaelyn fight when I got a stack marker and all the scions came running over to me and then. then. at the very last second every single one of them ran out from under the stack to group in the middle (AI anticipating the next attack I presume) and the stack went off .0001 seconds after they ABANDONED me before I could catch up and the wol's mom resundered the shit out of my poor lizard boy. the sheer and utter betrayal of that moment. exquisite. hydaelyn was like yeah you guys should probably just get on the moon ship and gtfo

[you look so pretty and i love this view]
pairing: yu iseol x afab!she/her!reader
summary: you realise that you might like your senior sister more than you originally thought.
word count: 1.66k
author's note: based this on that one time i realised i was in love with my then best friend, who turned out to be super homophobic but we're going to ignore that reality. mom says my fanfic, my rules. (the story of us falling out is in the tags kurghhhh)
═══════════════
laundry day was always the busiest time of the week.
well, it's not like you had anything better to do, as one of the physically weaker disciples of the sect, there was an unspoken expectation that you and the others like you would have to pull your weight around here in other ways.
you just wished more people wanted to pull their weight in the housekeeping aspect, instead of all flocking to the book-keeping jobs. it sucked that the majority of the housework was left in your hands, but what can a girl do?
sitting alone by the running stream, you worked hard at cleaning the dirt and stains off the pristine white uniforms you all wore, staying careful not to rip open tears and loose threads in the fabric. you look at the pile of clothing you had left, feeling your eye twitch when you saw the state that they were all in.
you sigh.
a long, drawn out sigh with your head thrown back. the sky above you that was once a dark shade of indigo had grown to a pale violet — the air in your lungs was cold and crisp. the water running in the stream smelt fresh, like the earth it came out from further up the mountains. you leave your hand in the stream, shivering at the icy feeling of the water running over your skin.
deciding that it was a long enough break, you shook your hands dry, digging into the unwashed clothes trying to pick out the uniform with the least defects so you could just mindlessly scrub on it without that added worry of wear and tear.
by the time you were done, the sun was hanging high up in the sky, and your back felt hot from how long you had been hunched over without ever going under the shade.
carefully, you balance the bigger laundry basket on your head while trying to rest the other on the curve of your hip.
the sound of shoes crunching on gravel comes up behind you. there wasn't a need for you to turn and look, you'd already guessed who it was by their footsteps alone.
...i'll take that.
yu iseol walks over, hands grabbing on the rounded edges of the woven basket. tugging on it lightly, having you loosen your grip a little.
you let her have it. stifling a giggle when her face was completely hidden behind the towering pile. yu iseol hugs the basket to her chest, shifting on her feet wondering when were you heading off to dry the clothes.
come on, iseol-sago.
you say softly, one hand balancing the basket on your head and the other reaching out to hold your senior sister's hand.
she lets you, quietly noting how your fingers felt against her calloused palms. hers were long, thin and rather scarred, and yours were a little smaller and..
her thumb rests over your fingers, your soft and squishy fingers. almost like a baby's. but maybe it's because your hands had been in and out of the water for the past few hours, they've become wrinkly — just like an old man's.
you hear a low scoff. looking over from the corner of your eye, you follow yu iseol's gaze to see her looking at your interlocked hands tenderly.
the back of your ears grow heated at the sight, your eyes dart back to the path in front of you, determined not to look back again and have your eyes meet hers.
what was that anyway?
what was that look she had back there?
you silently hoped the shadow cast by the basket on your head was dark enough to hide the slight steam of bashfulness that was probably escaping the pores of your skin right then.
yu iseol shut her eyes, letting you lead her to wherever, she knew you wouldn't ever lead her down a path where she could trip and fall over. well, she couldn't even if she tried since she had good reflexes.
but still, she lets her guard down around you. it wasn't that hard to do that anyway. it was nice being around you, after all.
hand-in-hand, the two of you walked under the endless rows of trees, yu iseol basked in the brief pockets of warm sunlight that hit her face, listening to the soft synchronised breathing passing between you two. the critters chattered above your heads and the red leaves of autumn crunched beneath your feet.
iseol-sago... we're here.
there was a slight shake in your voice, it wasn't really out of fear, that much she could tell. she should ask the others later, they might know the reasons why better than she did.
you were lucky that your senior sister had volunteered to help today. what would have been a job that took you almost three hours was done in one, leaving you some time to kick off your shoes and take a break while waiting for the clothes to dry out.
a while back, the sect had some money to spare. and since it was also your birthday coincidentally, the elders had asked if there was anything you wanted.
you had asked for a wooden platform to be built where you hung the laundry, and what a great request it had been. now in autumn, surrounded by a sea of oranges and reds, you lie down with your legs hanging over the edge, face turned up to the skies as your eyes made out the shapes of the clouds.
normally, yu iseol would have taken this time to train or work on her physique. but she didn't have her sword with her, nor did she want to leave you alone in the forest to go and get it. besides, the weather today was nice, and a few hours of doing nothing wouldn't hurt anyone. that guy would probably even pay her money to take a breather for a bit.
you look over, watching her shuffle a little closer to you. giggling, you link your arm with hers, pulling her to your side, shoulders bumping against each other's.
the both of you stayed like that for a long time, eyes closed, lingering between staying awake and falling asleep. it wasn't until a cold gush of air blew across the forest, causing the trees to knock branches and the leaves to fly across the ground — jostling you awake.
by then, the sun was sinking down the mountain peaks, the once vibrant blues of the afternoon sky had been painted with streaks of evening pink.
you turn over to look at the girl still asleep next to you.
her long hair had fallen over her face, covering it almost completely. your hand reaches out, trembling a little, to brush it out of her visage. you couldn't help tucking it behind her ear, though you didn't want to push your luck further by letting your fingers linger near her face.
maybe it was the lighting, maybe it was something else.
for someone who didn't care about her appearance all that much, she sure didn't look the least bit shabby. your eyes trailed over her dark plum-brown locks that shone a deep indigo under the setting sun. it wasn't just her hair, the same orange light danced across the curve of her cheek — the slight plumpness that led down to her sharp jawline, angled perfectly to frame her soft lower lip topped with a cupid's bow that strung an arrow straight to your heart. her nose was pointed and a little small, the slope of it led your gaze up to her eyes. her lashes were long with each one hand-crafted by the gods to curl perfectly around her two downturned eyes, each holding a pool of pale violet that had turned into a blooming lilac with a thin golden ring circling the dark centre of her irises.
a pair that were looking straight back into yours.
your heart jumped up to your mouth. not expecting that she had woken up while you were busy staring at her so shamelessly.
hm.
yu iseol sounds in acknowledgement. her expression still as neutral as ever. though if you hadn't been so preoccupied with the panicking, you would have noticed the rosy tint on the tips of her ears.
she reached out and grabbed your neck in place, tilting it to face her. she leans down and placed her forehead against yours. and you found your breath stuck, hitched in your throat as you dared not move or make a sound. this was all too much for you! that loud and noisy thumps of your heart rang in your ears, and you wondered for a moment if yu iseol had heard it too.
hm. you're not sick.
she states, matter-of-factly and lifts herself off the platform, walking over to the clothesline where the hanging laundry had almost been forgotten. she collects the clothes calmly, as though whatever she pulled on you just now was just any other regular day.
you remained lying on that wooden platform, mind reeling from what just transpired. you wanted to yell, to scream, to throw yourself off the cliff but you couldn't do that while she was still here. you choked back from spitting out blood in sheer agony. if your senior sister kept playing with you like this, you doubt you had any longer to live.
═══════════════
chung myung wonders what deity he had disrespected in his past life to be stuck with kids like yu iseol.
when she had come to him and the other three in the middle of training with the pretext of asking for a friend, he hadn't thought so far to expect a disaster like this.
he looks up to the heavens where his sa-hyungs and friends were looking down on him and contemplates if he should just lock these two girls in a room until they sort out themselves.
i am so... fucking tired of you all...

No but even beyond the heathcliffean air of his story as a kid, Nelly scene and revenge fantasies included, and even beyond the identification of the self with the craft, the entire concept of Yingxing is so good.
The glimpse we get of the relationship he has with his master has so much potential. What it says about him, what it says about everyone around them, what it says about the kid.
The fact that already as a child Yingxing was vindictive, as he will be as Blade.
His self-consciousness about being a short life species, and how he is right to be self-conscious about it. How in such a short time, being so young, he's had to deal with enormous tragedy, so that he can even as a kid look the truth in the eye and admit it. Admit that he has to work harder, longer, more obsessively, and that still nonetheless there's little chance to get ever at the level of the long life species that look down on him and take him for granted. How he is able to overcome it.
It's incredible also in the context of Dan Feng. How both struggle with their identities and how they get new ones, but in totally opposite ways. Dan Feng is weighted down by what he is and what he can do, and wants to escape that fate, and dreams of a new life in which he can be something else; and Dan Heng is born. Yingxing takes pride in that which he can do, something he wasn't born into, something he had to work very hard to achieve, and that was the path to overcome the prejudices and undermining gazes he had to bear as a short life species. He crafts his place into the Xianzhou society and becomes the legendary Furnace Master. Even on a more personal level, one could argue this is his way of maneuvering his life, of expressing himself, this is how he deals with things; like his relationship with Jing Yuan having a turning point after giving him his weapon, or how he crafted that jade flask. And then he loses his ability to create and loses himself; he becomes Blade.
The fact that even as an adult, as an exceedingly arrogant craftsman, something of the shy self-conscious kid remains is both endearing and heartbreaking as well. In some ways we still see that in Blade.
We also see echoes of that personality in Mr. Xiao, who worked under him. And that alongside his craftsmanship, his ability to fix and create auromatons even though they are vanishing in the civilian landscape, live on through Mr. Xiao. And die alongside him, for Mr. Xiao too has become but a relic of another time.
The way the other stories of craftsmen enhance facets of Yingxing's is so good too. Mainly in the story of Master Ryan and Chengjie, with the insight we get of the struggles of short life species in the Xianzhou, especially those dedicated to a craft, and how hard it is for them to reach positions of prestige. It also poses the question of how we can transcend time, if it's possible at all, and how the sharing of knowledge, the passing down of skills, the shared loved, is one of the answers. This was all already significant before, but the information gains weight with the existence of Mr. Xiao. I'd argue there's echoes of Yingxing even in Master Gongshu. His love for his automatons, his sincere fondness for them, his pride on his job, his loyalty to his position and duties, the way he is both hard and stern as well as loving with his apprentices, and how he talks about short life species.
On a sort of ontological way, it's very interesting to see how Yingxing goes from craftsman to tool or weapon, from creator to creation, from subject to object. The potential in the context of Abundance/Destruction is also extremely intriguing, I think. He who created is unmade by a curse of Abundance. He who forged weapons now follows that path of destruction. There's so much going on with Yingxing conceptually around the cycles of death and rebirth, destruction and creation; it's so fitting that now Blade is stuck in such a cycle in the most literal way.
And it's so fitting too that, in all this context, given Yingxing's entire story, Blade's entire being, that which he made unmade him. That which he created and gave him so much pride was the weapon that killed him. And now he wields it himself, his tool of revenge while he follows the path to eternal and irrevocable death.
#Yingxing#Blade#I talk too much#Fragments and scraps#sort of. I think I'll delete that tag when I save these ideas somewhere else#These are only some of the things I can't stop thinking about#Among other things I wondered what it must have been for Mr. Xiao to see his master's face everywhere around the Luofu#Fu Xuan makes a comment about not believing the short life species are necessarily less knowledgeable and that also said a lot I think#Due both to how she worded and the context. How it seemed to be another sign of her superior wisdom that she realises this#but how it's still an extended pov along the Xianzhou#The idea of being/becoming/losing oneself through and/or because of one's own skills and abilities is also applicable to Jing Yuan#I don't know. There's really so much to think about and dissect. It's so juicy#For real Yingxing is so good as a character. I didn't expect something so good and so well crafted#(and so in tune with all my favourite characteristics and stories. I've not talked#about the Orphic elements and the suicidal tendencies here‚ or the play on betrayals‚ but goodness)#I really wasn't expecting something as good and with so much potential (I am so afraid of them ruining the writing)#The way the worldbuilding and the little glimpses at everyday life of NPCs enhance every concept forming the character is amazing#I truly can't stop thinking of Yingxing/Blade in every facet he has. The very way we are told things is telling#I always say form is substance‚ and I mean it. Yingxing's and Blade's story is such a clear case of this#The fragmentary condition of the storytelling as well as the different levels of trust one can give to every fragment works magnificently#with Blade as a mara-struck person dealing with memory loss and the loss of the self#It also works well with Dan Heng and Jingliu going through something similar‚ with Jing Yuan being manipulative and deceptive and silent‚#with Baiheng being dead. Ironically in my opinion it also works very well with how it seems to be hinted that both Dan Heng#and Blade may recall more than they let on or admit. I'm talking a lot and I should stop already but yes. I can't stop thinking about him#He's skyrocketed to the higher positions in the list of my all-time favourite characters in no time at all#Or at least his potential has. Goodness‚ I hope they don't ruin him...#Ugh I've talked way too much. I'm going to have to move the tags

Ludwig x Maria always intrigued me. Do you have any ideas on their potential relationship?
Damn... This is a really cute ship ;-; I've been noticing that fandom, likewise, pointed out something fitting about them since the old fandom times xD And it feels so good for me? Whereas Gehrman and Laurence are 'dark' people, leaning on 'ends justify the means' side; Ludwig and Maria, on the contrary, are the knightly, honourable, 'bright' people believing in good and not having the full picture of what they're getting into!
🌙 They would both certainly love horse riding. Even have competition at such! The Cainhurst Knights (especially male ones) seemed to prefer horse-riding, and..... we all know Ludwig was a horse girl xd (source: dude trust me my aunt works at Fromsoft lol)
🌻 Maria would most likely take the lead in relationship. Although Ludwig would be surprised initially, but he would soon become HER horse-girl fdhshfd. Hell, Maria would be the one to plan the dates! AND she would be the one to provide Ludwig some adorable sessions of eating lumenweed/sunflowers past his beasthood xD
🌙 Unlike SOME people, Ludwig would be able to face the struggle Maria had to face upon Adeline giving herself to the research for the Eldrich Truth. More than that; he'd be able to comfort her, having faced the agenda himself. It could have given Maria more of a hope.
🌻 They ABSOLUTELY had friendly sparring sessions. Sorry, not I make the rules xD. Basically, a lot of their meetings feature kicking one another's ass until they can just laugh and forget all of it. They are both very battle-ready types! Training one another to be good at fight was the least they could do for one another!
🌙 They had MANY topics to be salty about; how Healing Church was getting things wrong, how chivalry mattered for the hunt, how Moon was a valid guidance for the hunters, how Laurence was kinda sketchy... You know those friendships when friends have many topics to vent about, but none of them quite drown out the quality of their friendship? That would be Ludwig and Maria!
🌻 Again, Maria would be the one to gift the flower bouquets in relationship. Luwdig would often be surprised by Maria taking up the role of uhhh, provider of romantic gestures in relationship. But he'd accept soon enough, and even think he could never asked for a better partner. Maria LOVES flowers, and Ludwig, with his ass obsessed with simply efficient weapons and nothing more, would learn to love her obsession with gardening!
🌙 They would both take their turns in crying and falling in despair as strong yet very sensitive warriors. They have all the resource to support each other at their hardest, and to encourage one another that the 'Stars and Moon' know the way. They are a weird combination of both having enough of their humanity intact AND enough of devotion to the exterior powers.
🌻 They would often get into the same silly jokes! They just get each other's cringe moments SOOOO much... At times, when they are separated, they think up of the jokes they will tell one another when they meet again!
🌙 Maria is 6'7'' (201 cm) tall, and Ludwig is 7'00 (213 cm) tall!! You could tell the height difference barely has any bearing on their relationship. They are both very tall!
🌻 I believe that Maria, well.... "died" before Laurence unleashed Executioners on Cainhurst. That'd send Ludwig into complete fanaticism over the 'Moon's guidance, believing the very act of following it alone could reunite him with Maria :( Regardless of her relationship status, that was what made him seek his ONLY source of confidenment in "Moon's Presence". Friendship or love, it didn't matter... There was only one power in the whole cosmos left capable of understanding his loss.

Hi Leah! I have what is probably a stupid question if you feel like answering it? (If not, that’s alright too!)
Like a lot of people, I was brought up to believe in a very literal interpretation of the book of Genesis, told that evolution was a worldly lie, etc., but I’ve grown much more curious and open minded about other views in recent years. So my understanding was that there was no such thing as death until Adam and Eve’s sin? And I was wondering if/how evolution and natural selection and everything would all work if death had not yet entered the world?
I have a feeling this is probably a very common question, and certainly something I heard a lot growing up, but framed less like a genuine question and more as a sort of well-obviously-a-real-Christian-can’t-believe-in-evolution statement. (Which is such nonsense! There are so many Christians who believe in evolution!) But I genuinely would like to know because I’m sure there’s a good answer!
Hey Juliana! Not a stupid question at all, my goodness. People dedicate whole lives and careers to considering these things and I've seen a pretty wide range of views on the subject, so I don't have a simple answer for you. That said, I do think there are good answers to be had and I'd love to opine as best I can!
So it's my understanding that the Hebrew word for death, mût, can refer to physical death and/or spiritual death (ie being alienated or cut off from God), depending on context. A really great example of where it's obviously used for the latter is Ezekiel 18, because the whole passage is a warning about spiritual death. I've excerpted verses 20-24 below with some help from Blue Letter Bible:
The soul who sins shall die (mût). The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die (mût). None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live.  Have I any pleasure in the death (mût) of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die (mût).
I think it's obvious to any orthodox Christian (or heck, probably plenty of secular folks too) that this passage isn't talking about physical death, but about the death of a person's soul/the second death. This same word, mût, is also the word that's used in Genesis 2 and 3.
After Adam and Eve sin, they feel shame, try to hide from God, and try to avoid taking responsibility for what they've done. They realize their nakedness. They are alienated from God and from one another: something within their souls is broken and is now barreling straight towards complete separation from God in a novel way. Since spiritual death is a legitimate sense of the word die in Hebrew, we can actually read the passage pretty much at face value and see that this alienation between man and God is death coming into the world.
So that's that then, right? The curse is purely spiritual in nature and physical death has always been perfectly natural?
Yeah, no. I mean, clearly not, right? Jesus didn't just conquer spiritual death (though He very much did that), he also physically resurrected in the body. This is a pretty big deal. Throughout Scripture, physical death is treated as something for which we were not made: we do not welcome it and we are right to grieve it. We can learn the spiritual skills to die well, but death is still portrayed as the enemy. It will not exist in eternity.
However, I do think that this spiritual aspect makes it pretty clear that the death that came about as a consequence of the fall is specific to spiritual beings (ie humans with souls). Thus, I don't think there's any problem with acknowledging that purely physical deaths of animals without the Imago Dei occurred routinely prior to the fall.
(Also, to engage with YE creationism on its own terms for a moment: why would God create predators with claws and teeth and carnivorous metabolisms if they were not meant to kill other animals?)
But we are still left with the fact that physical death is an enemy, unnatural to the human condition, and furthermore that it is tightly bound up with spiritual death (no Platonic dualism here). Thus, the death that entered the world when Adam and Eve sinned must be both physical and spiritual in nature.
To the remaining question of how, exactly, that squares, I haven't got a good theological answer. This is as far as my current research and understanding can take me; from here, I can only share my own personal speculation.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that there is something inherently eternal in the image of God, and thus in the human soul. For my requisite Lewis quote, "You have never talked to a mere mortal." I speculate that when God breathed into Adam's lungs and endowed him with the Divine Image, whether in Mesopotamia or in Africa, Adam really was physically immortal, regardless of the fact that his ancestors had been dying for millennia. The Divine image is not one created for physical death, even when the material from which its bearers are sculpted has hitherto been mortal and fleeting.
So in summary, I think that the death that enters the world in Genesis 2-3 is both spiritual and physical in nature, and thus it is specific to spiritual beings. I draw this view from a number sources, including MDivs I know personally, but a good starting point is C. John Collins, the Old Testament theologian that I referenced in my other Adam and Eve post, if you're interested in learning more. I also tentatively speculate that the Divine Image with which God endowed Adam and Eve came with a physical immortality that they lost as a result of the Fall. That part is my own gloss.
Like I said before, I'm still young and I'm definitely not a theologian. Evolutionary biology is my academic wheelhouse much moreso than Adam and Eve. Like you, I'd like to keep learning. Ask me again in thirty years ;)

||Replaying Jingliu/High Cloud Quintet Story Quest on my Asia. I don't think I ever got a chance to talk about my thoughts around it here.
Ignoring the drama around it, I am still a firm believer we will see more of Jingliu/High Cloud Quintet story continue in future patches. After all, the game hasn't been out for long (though it's coming close to a year now) and we have so much of the universe to explore. I do believe we will see the other Xianzhou ships and by then we might see more of Jingliu and Luocha.
That includes possibly more of the history of the High Cloud Quintet, more details of what Dan Feng and Yingxing had done, and Bailu role in all of this because whatever they did- Bailu is related to it. But ah, I'll talk about that in another post. (or rather in future Bailu/Dan Heng IL story quests related to Dan Feng crimes).
Speaking of HCQ,, my heart was very tender to hear Baiheng relationship with the other HCQ members and how important she is to them. She was a bundle of positive energy despite how horrendous her luck is and the reputation that came with it. I adore how she was able to bring the best out of everyone. In the case of Dan Feng, she is a good friend to him who didn't see him for his status but as a person just like anyone else.
For Dan Feng, to have lost an important friend, must've crushed his human heart. Perhaps the last straw with so many deaths and bloodshed in the Xianzhou war against the Abundance. He wasn't the High Elder who was praised atm, but a person who made a horrible choice out of desperation (I say desperation, but he did want to believe he made a correct choice until it was too late).
As for the reveal that Jingliu is Dan Feng closest friend, she definitely knows Dan Feng well enough. The implication of Jingliu recognizing Dan Feng spearmanship and questioning/taunting Yinyue Jun (Dan Heng) if the enemies around them aren't enough to interest him...They definitely did spar alot. I'll mention the Icor of Two Dragons and Dan Feng is sulking because he lost to Jingliu and that's just funny to think about how common it is between them.
The interaction between Jing Yuan and Luocha. I am invested in their dynamic since they are both playing 5D chess. But when Jing Yuan thought he had the upperhand, Luocha revealed being taken for trial is part of his (and Jingliu) plan. And Jing Yuan?? He looks amused, almost happy enough that he was beaten and takes his loss with grace.
When the HCQ, or what remained of them, finally gathered together for Jingliu to formally disband them and say her goodbye...It was rather bittersweet. The joyful memories they had together as a band of outcasts, a found family between them, are no more.
Baiheng is dead, sacrificed her life to save her friends and comrades-in-arms against Shuhu(?).
Jingliu is a mara-struck criminal, tethering between the lines of sanity and insanity, and she seeks to end Yaoshi for good.
Yingxing is gone, replaced by Blade, an immortal following Destiny Slave so he can finally have true death.
Jing Yuan, now an Arbiter General of the Luofu, who lost all of his friends including his master. They are still here, but they're not the same anymore. He feels useless, unable to do anything but continue to watch as Jingliu and Blade fight as he sees the HCQ are gone for good.
Dan Feng the criminal who committed the unpardonable sin, forced to through a faux-rebirth, leaving Dan Heng to shoulder his sins. Dan Heng, who tried his best to escape the shadows of his past but unable to.
NGL, I was watching the cutscene and the ending of the chapter with a heavy heart. I do want to see the story of the HCQ when they were at their best, the happiest before their fallout, and it will hurt me cause I know how it will all end.
Focusing closely on Dan Heng throughout the quest, I think after the quest- Dan Heng feels like he can't escape his past, as Jingliu said. The faint memories that linger at the back of his mind, his spearmanship, and everything that happened in the Luofu prior to that...
No matter how hard Dan Hen tries, he has to come to the fact he must accept his past. And he did accept that Dan Feng is part of, as said in the animation! But he will not allow it to dictate who he is in the present. This is just more setbacks in his progress I believe he'll overcome in the future.
After all, Dan Heng has too many unsolved answers of what his predecessor has done in the past regarding the Vidyadhara heritage and Blade immortality. He might not like it and it might be better for him to avoid it, but he is genuinely curious (and he is very much curious about his homeland since he lived in the Shackling Prison for most of his childhood and teenage ears).
Of course, there is the issue of his identity crisis. Dan Heng in generally confident in his own individuality. But events in the Xianzhou and with Jingliu left him with some doubts. Doubts that has been casted away after inquiring Jing Yuan opinion, who tells him that only Dan Heng knows the answer to his question.
and I believe, Dan Heng knows the answer too.
In regards to Blade, I think Dan Heng has connected the dots between Blade and Yingxing. But he has a hard time coming to terms with it because they are vastly different people. He's not too familiar with Yingxing, but he respects the man who created Cloud Piercer. He's familiar with Blade, but their meetings only end in bloodshed. The memories of being chased by him are still vivid in his mind...
But he knows at least Dan Feng is responsible for Blade predicament, for his (Dan Heng) predicament as well. And he feels like it is his duty to at least see Blade journey through the end because no matter how much he denies it- their fates are messily intertwined.
As to whether Dan Heng takes Jingliu information as the truth, he accepts some parts of Jingliu words as true. However, Jingliu memories are vague as well and heavily biased with hate/anger, some of the things she said could be from her opinion only. The same goes for Blade, as they are both mara-struck individuals.
And Dan Heng is Dan Feng reincarnation so by logic his predecessor memories are wiped out, or almost non-existent.
That's the end of my thoughts that no make no sense rambling like a madman.
P.S. I am Yanqing who looks so done with everything.
