Truth! #socialhistory #livinghistory #perspective #Repost @brownesirish • • • • • Think of this windowsill at Brownes. It has held this window for 119 years on 33rd street. One of my favorite houses in Brookside. During the Civil War the house, which was the first house in the area east of the state line, was used as a hiding place for runaway slaves seeking safety in the free state of Kansas, playing a role in the Underground Railroad #kchistory #saturdaydogwalks (at BrooksideKC)

Officer Joseph Raimo was assassinated at 11:15 PM on March 28, 1911 at 5th and Holmes. The officer was noted for his bravery and diligence in the performance of his duties. He had been especially assigned to the various Italian cases, and his untiring efforts aroused considerable enmity among the criminal classes of that nationality. Officers will use every means to bring to justice the perpetrators of this foul crime. March 29, 1911, KC Police arrest 4 men for the murder of Paulina Pizano. They are Lorenzo Messina, Nick DeHernnado, Sam Genuso and Joe Denusisio. The paper identifies as Syrians. They are found in possession of 3 shotguns exactly like the shotguns left by the assassins of Joe Raimo. We don’t know the disposition of these three men. (at The Kansas City Star)

Want to peek inside one of KCMO's historic mansions? We recently came across some interior photos of 328 Benton Boulevard in the Scarritt Point neighborhood. This home is the south builing of the Heim brother's residences which share an enormous carriage house and a heart-shaped driveway. --- Heim Brothers Homes and Carriage House 320-328 Benton Boulevard 1895; 1897 (carriage house) Architect: Charles A. Smith Builder: Hucke & Sexton Ferdinand Jr. and Michael Heim were two of the three sons of Ferdinand Heim, Sr., an Austrian immigrant who established his Heim Brewery Company in East St. Louis before moving the operation to Kansas City in 1884. The brothers invested in a streetcar, and although it was a flop at first, it quickly became popular after the brothers built The Electric Park amusement park at the end of the streetcar line in 1899. Ferd and Michael hired the prolific architect Charles Smith to design two homes on the same block of Benton Avenue in the fashionable Northeast neighborhood of the city. Ferd’s home, at 320 Benton, was designed in the Victorian Eclectic style while Michael’s, at 328 Benton, was designed in the Queen Anne style. Not long after, the two brothers built a long carriage house at the back of the lot between their residences. To get to the buildings, carriages exit the street onto a heart-shaped driveway that loops around a fountain in the center of the properties.
