Jeremiah Clemens House ca. 1835 Huntsville, AL This house was moved from its previous location at the corner Clinton Avenue and Church Street. It is now located at the corner of Pratt Avenue and Meridian Street, and houses professional offices. The original owner of the house was a first cousin of Samuel Clemens (better known as Mark Twain), and quite an interesting character in his own right. Clemens was well educated for his time, attending the former LaGrange College in Leighton, AL and the University of Alabama before studying law at Transylvania University. He began the practice of law in Huntsville in 1834 and was appointed the Attorney General for the Northern District of Alabama in 1838. In politics, Clemens was a leader of the opponents to succession in the Alabama Convention of 1861, and later an outspoken advocate for peace during the latter months of the civil war. The 1883 Chauncey & Martha Griggs Mansion on 476 Summit Avenue. Allegedly it’s haunted and I have interacted with someone, since my original post in ‘17, who’s had an art studio there and they confirmed there was a strange presence after dark. I’m so moved beyond belief by this story. . . Robert Hartwell: “3 weeks ago I found this house online. I said “this is my house”. I called the seller and was told it was a cash only offer and that “I’m sure that takes you off the table”. Don’t you ever underestimate a hard working black man. I saw the house last week and when I walked in I knew I was home. The house was built in 1820 for the Russell family who owned the cotton mill in town. Slavery was still legal. When the agent asked me why I wanted such a large house I said it was “a generational move”. I know this house is bigger than me. I wish I could’ve told my ancestors when they were breaking their backs in 1820 to build this house that 200 years later a free gay black man was going to own it and fill it with love and find a way to say their name even when 200 years later they still thought I would be “off the table”. We are building our own tables. I’ve never been prouder to be a black man. Come to my White House any time. I can’t wait to have you! Glory to God in the highest. I’m a homeowner.” . Roslyn Heights is a Queen Anne mansion that can be found in Boonville, Missouri. It was built by Wilbur T. and Rhoda Stephens Johnson in 1895. The mansion now serves as the Missouri State DAR Headquarters after it was purchased by the Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for their state head in 1983.
