Today (July 25, 2023), on what would have been Emmett Till’s 82nd birthday, President Joe Biden signed a proclamation to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument honoring Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. In 1955, Emmett was 14 when he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered because a white woman accused him of “inappropriately interacting" with her.

Reposted from @savingplaces Meet our nation’s newest national monument, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument... which includes:
Tumblr media
- Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ (Chicago, Illinois), founded in 1916. Following Mamie Till Mobley’s decision to “let the world see what I’ve seen,” an estimated 100,000 people filed past Emmett’s casket over three days in September 1955.
Tumblr media
- Tallahatchie County Courthouse (Sumner, Mississippi), the site of the September 1955 trial of J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant for Emmett Till’s murder. The building was restored to its 1955 condition and the Emmett Till Interpretive Center opened across the street to provide interpretation.
Tumblr media
- Graball Landing on the banks of the Tallahatchie River in Mississippi, the site where Emmett Till’s body was found.
This new national monument is an opportunity for the nation to remember the life and legacy of 14-year-old Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, for catalyzing the American #CivilRightsMovement.
“Imbued in these now permanently protected buildings and landscapes are the unspeakable crimes of racial violence, and the tireless strength of Mamie Till Mobley who harnessed her grief in pursuit of #socialjustice. Through historic preservation, this multiracial coalition of partners will continue its work to uplift this new national monument and secure the resources and investment needed to ensure the site's future.”
- Brent Leggs, Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund

This structure, located on East Bethune, between Woodward and John R, is all that remains of the then-Hamlin Avenue Police Station, designed by Louis Kamper. Built in 1898, it served as headquarters of the 9th Precinct - this building housed the Mounted Division. Unfortunately, when the 9th Precinct closed in 1954, the main building was subsequently demolished. The Mounted Division stayed behind. The old stables have been on the market for several years. #Detroit #NorthEndDetroit #Chateau #FrenchRenaissanceRevival #VictorianArchitecture #LouisKamper #archi_ologie #deserve2preserve #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces (at North End) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cqnc660OlgZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Truly a remarkable evening. Thank you to everyone who made this benefit gala possible. This momentous fundraiser convened leaders across the worlds of art, philanthropy, and historic preservation to safeguard the childhood home of Nina Simone, whose cultural legacy is of great personal significance to all the artists involved in the gala and auction.

what we’re “conserving” in this life is the path to eternal life
A world now invisible to us, but much more real than this world is.
A place where Love is real, constantly, where Light illumines everything.
this is why words mean so much, to bear more weight than gold. words are a “store of value” worth more than money. even our Creator is known as the Word of God.
and so, what we think and believe and write and speak truly matters. we will give account for all of it. our very lives are being recorded into real books. and we can see a “glimpse” of this in how people are sharing things online all over the world, recorded and stored on servers. for better or for worse.
there’s inspiration for building things in this world. for creating. but not all things are pure in nature. some start good, and turn from it. and some good things do keep on being good.
the Spirit was sent to earth nearly 2,000 years ago to build the Body, the Temple of a pure Church as the Bride of the eternal King, to One day depart to meet Him in the air for a heavenly “marriage”
(A secret elopement)
and so, in the meantime people have built many different kinds of churches on earth. some uphold spiritual truth, and sadly some do not. people have gone astray into many idolatrous rituals in worship. but Love seeks purity of heart & mind, and humility. Love seeks to unify in its pure Light (inside & out) to turn people back to Love and its truth.
nobody on earth is a “perfect” person, that much is True, but we worship the Perfect One.
(have we realized that grace perfects us through sacred Blood?)
please don’t adulterate the Genesis and its rebirth.
(inside, Anew)
A tweet that crossed my path from Connecticut about the inspiration of building a church from the eyes of an architect:
@SavingPlaces
“Have you ever thought what it would be like to live in a giant sapphire?” architect Wallace K. Harrison asked before designing First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, CT.
See the result of his jewel box inspo:

544 East Frederick Avenue was built in 1890 for John J. Owen, a contractor/builder. Like its neighbor at 580 East Frederick (Warren House/Dunbar Hospital), it was built by the Vinton Company. Bertha Alena Hansbury was born in Detroit in 1888. Reportedly, she was born on the site of the Fox Theatre. Hansbury was the product of multi-ethnic parents, a White mother and Black father. After attending the city’s public schools, she attended the prestigious Detroit Conservatory of Music. She then studied music abroad in Germany. In 1925, Hansbury and her husband, William H. Phillips, purchased the former Owen home. Hansbury, an accomplished pianist, founded the Hansbury Music School, which catered to the needs of African American children in the area. At the same time, Hansbury also ran a boarding school inside the home called the Bertha Hansbury Little Folk's School. Unfortunately, the Hansbury School was short-lived and didn't survive the economic strife of the Great Depression. In the 1930s, the home was the site of the Household Guild, the first state-licensed employment agency for blacks in Detroit. In the 1970s, Hilanius Phillips, who was the city's first black head city planner (and the grandson of Bertha Hansbury), championed the establishment of the East Frederick Avenue Historic District, which included structures of great importance to the African American community in Detroit and to the development of the Cultural Center. Multiple attempts to convert the home into a museum have stalled. #Detroit #CulturalCenter #MidtownDetroit #QueenAnne #VictorianArchitecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhousesoldandnew #deserve2preserve #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces (at Cultural Center Historic District, Detroit) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpOpvtcD_Ev/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Love (God our Creator) seeks to conserve the Church as a pure Body of those who “believe…” no matter the color of skin or language spoken. no matter the place of birth or net worth.
Heaven has no segregation. no division.
Love is impossible to be divided. it is a True Kingdom that will never end…
Love is Light
taking it back to the purity of biblical “roots” to bring about Unity of Body (of heart & mind)

This is the Newton D. Baker House, a National Historic Landmark. Two points of interest about the NHL program and this landmark in particular: • While there are 90,000 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, only 2,500 are National Historic Landmarks. If a property is designated as a latter, it is automatically added as a former. Both programs are administered by the @nationalparkservice... Talk about a dream job! • Jacqueline Kennedy purchased this house and lived in it with her immediate family in the year after John’s tragic death. #georgetown #federalrevival #federalrevivalarchitecture #federalrevivalstyle #federalrevivalhouse #newtondbakerhouse #georgetownarchitecture #georgetowndc #historic #historichomes #thisplacematters #historicdistrict #archi_ologie #homeandgarden #jackiekennedy #doriccolumns #columns #historicpreservation #preservation #savingplaces #mygeorgetown #igersgeorgetown #keystone #igers_georgetown #igersdc #igers_dc #dcblogger #nationalhistoriclandmark #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #dcinventoryofhistoricsites (at Georgetown) https://www.instagram.com/p/CM0At8xHMAK/?igshid=ybvy2bp2uiy8
