Sunday blues under the cut

I'm going through my Google docs and my favorite (recs) AO3 bookmarks and like. there's something about the nostalgia here that's making me really sad for some reason and maybe it's because I've been so much less engaged with fandom stuff since I left Twitter.

Like I still read constantly and comment when I can, but maybe it's because of the culture that tends to softly discourage reblogs with comments (as opposed to Twitters endless streams of little public discussions, at least back in like 2019-2021) that I feel extremely disconnected.

I've got my little pockets of two or three friends here and there but a group? A fandom? A place where I felt like part of a community of likeminded people?

I don't know. I think I'm just back on that same old "I want to write something that matters to to someone" train and the only thing I've written with that level of plot and teeth is the fucking Genshin fic and I'm just. I wish I didn't care so much about making friends! I wish I didn't have to fight so hard to feel like I belonged! But Katsucon put into sharp relief that I don't have nearly the amount of IRL support that I need to be okay. I'm the mom friend to 80% of the people I know, and the other 3 individuals cannot be expected to keep helping me out of every crisis I have.

I don't know what happened to me in the past few years. I know some things have gotten better. But I miss so, so much just having a group of people to get EXCITED about creative projects with - or even just being able to hang out in person and not worry about how many annoying stupid things I've done in the past hour. God. GOD.

I know that I'm still talented. There's still something worth keeping in this body. But I feel like I've lost my ability to showcase it or share it in a way that isn't just Laurel (whom I love) doggedly trying to keep my sense of worth above water.

The only thing I feel like people like me for is my credit card. And it's something. It helps the people I love. But. God, I wish I could be something else.

I got some really cool photos of my 1890s Umbreon cosplay at Katsucon last weekend through the power of handing my partner my phone and giving very detailed instructions, then getting bonked every time someone tried to open this really cool restaurant door.

Also got some other good shots elsewhere, though it was cold and windy, as does happen in February sometimes.

(I did actually wear a mask the whole con except for a few brief selfies and when I was outside.)

I had a really fun Katsucon, and there were a ton of Zelda cosplayers who were very excited to see other Zelda cosplayers and nerd out.

When I first started doing this, back in the fall of 2019- I went and followed anyone with a Zelda cosplay. If they were local, I tried to be friends. And then 2020 happened and I started trying too hard to be friends and in some cases I alienated people. So I had to tell myself to back off and sometimes I was okay at that and sometimes not. Anyway, there is a local guy who was doing an incredible Twilight Princess Link and I wanted to be like him so bad it was incredible but I think I kinda freaked him out and he was always polite but distant. So I respected that and eventually did find people to yell with, even if their preferred fandom was Metroid.

A month ago I was at a con and an Astarian cosplayer crosses my path as I’m rolling in Link and he smiled and greets me as he passes and I was like I think that’s TP Link and that was cool.

Saturday night of this con, I go to chat a Link in the frostbite set and he is talking to that same Astarian and it is, indeed, this local TP Link. And he goes “HEY I follow your Instagram and your stuff is so good!”

And I almost fell on the floor but I managed to keep myself together long enough to reply “Omg, when I started doing this, your Link was one I aspired to.”

“Oh stop!” He says. “You’re better at this than me. Can we get a photo together?”

So we did and I managed to keep my shit together just long enough to not have a whole Senpai noticed me moment in front of anyone.

Like damn, that was so cool, and definitely a high point.

Have another photo of my Frodo cosplay! I loved the scenery by the water at Katsucon and I knew it was perfect for recreating the scene from the end of Fellowship of the Ring. Frodo is such an inspiring character for me- his vulnerability and empathy is his strength, and helps him succeed on his quest.

the goal for this week is to make some serious progress on my new stashbuster project!! i got the petticoat done this weekend, which checks off the last of the under structure for my plan, so maybe i can actually start….sewing the outside together??? which unfortunately, despite this being a “use what you already have!!!” sort of project, means i need to probably venture to a real store and get more chiffon because what i have only gets us part way there. :/

i have the whole week off, so the plan is to split some time between prepping this cosplay for katsucon and doing some staycationy activities, which in central florida will include visiting theme parks to see my friend display her work at the festival of the arts currently happening there.

This time last year my only wish was to have a better year than 2022 and i did it! A lot of bad things happened this year but here's some good things! January: Went to Florida, discovered a love of frogs February: Katsucon and started dating someone it didn't work out with but! Made one of my best friends! March: Not much happened in March but I did go to a fun Taylor Swift themed bday party! Oh wait I did get my Ephemeral Tattoo and got my nose repierced. April: Owl House ended (sad) but also I got to feel so much love for the show! Shaved my undercut to match Amity's. Also met my toh cosplay group who I love dearly! May: Eras tour! I was resurrected that night. June: Pride! Broke up with girl, gained a bestie. July: Queer Prom!!!!!! P sure this was when I went to SC and met Kat too <3 <3 August: Met current gf, took my cousin to his first concert and also saw FOB live. September: CCE!!!!! Succesful panel AND meetup! October: Turned 30 which didn't end the world, went to NYCC, started dating the best girl ever!!!!!! Also got a tattoo! Also saw Maisie Peters! November: Owl House meetup where I got to strengthen my friendships with the group I love! AnimeNYC! December: idk it just started but I'm not in a depressive episode this time and that's AMAZING Now if I could get a better job in 2024 my life would be TRULY AWESOME

The FoxWan piece that started as an idea for a quick little oneshot—those of you who just started laughing, I can hear you—and morphed into a monster fix-it, is officially complete at ~155k words.

Patreons started getting chapters last year, which stopped at chapter nine when my writing time vanished, and they’ll get the last six chapters (& a bonus side story) over the course of February and into the start of March. Fic will start posting to AO3 in early March. (When, exactly, will depend on how exhausted I am after Katsucon.)

So, you know, for my followers who have been wondering when I might post more fic, the answer is actually the holiday ficlets on the 17th-19th of February, lol. But, also, March.

And, yes, I know I need to at least update my patreon post with the list of everything that’s been added there since *checks* ...uh, October, apparently. Whoops. That will, however, not happen today, or probably even this week; rl is not, currently, being kind to me.

Oh hey so this happened to me this week :C Whyyyy do I always get a flat on the driver's side????? This is like the third flat I've had in my life and they've all been on the same side of my car. why.

So this is significantly more frustrating than usual cuz like let's be real, I'm rarely financially comfortable but now I'm not working at all because of school. Liz and Pat are still working full time but work + school has been pretty much a no go for me ><

aaaaand we went to Katsucon last weekend, making this the second time I've gotten a flat after a con. Last time was Tekko 2015 when I was leaving the con parking lot...because that's a great end to a con.

Bluh I'm just rambling because I'm frustrated and we can't get in anywhere to get a new tire until next week because our regular place doesn't have any openings until then. So, luckily we can carpool with Pat for the next few days but uggghhhhh frustrating!!!!

I'll be at Katsucon this weekend! I have packed all 3 of my completed Idia Shroud cosplay outfits, and will be wearing them based upon how I feel. I do have real glass beakers for the lab uniform, but likely won't be taking those experiments much past my hotel room. I haven't completely finished the broom prop for the gym uniform, but that's okay! Most of the time I'll be in the school uniform outfit, tho.

I will have the badge ribbons posted earlier with me during the con. I'll be handing those out to Twisted Wonderland cosplayers only. Due to the immense interest in those however, I cannot give out any extras (no "for my friend" requests will be honored). Also you need to be nice to me. I'm very quiet and introverted, and not very good at social situations, much like a certain fictional character!

If you do happen to get a ribbon, Valentine, or photo of me, I would very much like to see it! Please tag me! Thank you!
