A Day in the City

Pairing: Bill Weasley x Reader

It hadn't taken much for you to convince your boyfriend to come into the muggle part of the city with you. You just wanted to dress up and show him some of your favorite places. You wanted to hold his hand and walk down the streets taking in the lights of the city at night.

You wanted to be normal for a day.

Bill was a curse breaker and a damned good one. You worked in the newly formed reconstruction department of the ministry that was trying to set things to rights after the war. Both jobs were stressful and more dangerous than they sounded. This was a much deserved escape for the both of you.

It was nearing the end of the day and you were headed to your favorite restaurant. As you stepped off the underground you could hear the sweet sounds of a violin playing. You smiled at the man and his instrument, Bill joining you.

Before you realized what he was doing, he raised your arm and twirled you in a small dance. Your laughter rang in the air, his echoing as he pulled you back into his arms.

The two of you looked at each other for a long moment and he traced a finger down your cheek. "Marry me?"

You blinked in surprise. "Huh?" Well, that was eloquent.

He grinned again. "Marry me? Be Mrs. William Weasley. Have my children. Buy an owl with me. Whatever you want, just be mine." He pulled a velvet box from the pocket of his coat and flipped it open to reveal the perfect ring.

You stretched up and kissed him sweetly. "I'm already yours, Bill, but of course I'll marry you."

While talking with people about the ways FMA approaches the topic of Ishval, I've realized it falls into a SFF trend I jokingly call "are we the baddies?" stories. These are stories that focus on characters from a colonialist and/or imperialist society who are active parts of the imperial project, and they often spend most of their time investigating harms coming to people within the empire. Examples include Imperial Radch and the Locked Tomb. (Nona has started to move beyond that, although the core characters in Nona remain former high status imperial citizens.)

What I've noticed is that these stories are often written by comparatively privileged residents of imperial/settler colonialist nations (America, Aotearoa, Japan, specifically Hokkaido). Something that has also interested me is that there's often a level of distancing imposed through the characters' races. Many of the 'are we the baddies' stories by white authors that I've read have mostly brown characters (whether this is because ambiguously brown spacefutures are trendy, it's a quick way to check the diversity box without having to research culture, or they don't want to ask us to sympathize with white imperial villains, idk) whereas FMA makes its fascist military state European and Germanic-influenced, gesturing toward Japan's imperial history via a former ally without confronting it directly.

I've seen enough of these that I wonder if it's people trying to grapple with what it means when instead of being one of the scrappy rebels fighting the faceless evil empire, you are a citizen of the evil empire. What does it mean to be part of that system when you consider yourself, your family, your friends to be good people? How do you become more and more complicit? What can you do about it?

That's a storyline that will probably hit people differently depending on whether it's a question they're wrestling with or if they've been victimized by these systems and never had to stop to go "huh are those the baddies"? And there's certainly room to criticize stories like these for glossing over the damage done to external victims of empire, but I think they're deliberately focusing on people within the system for a reason.

#whether you think that's a good reason or not is up for debate #but given that the US is trying to ban honest discussion of our history maybe people do need some handholding in this regard #that yes people you consider good your family and your friends can still be complicit in bad stuff #and this system still hurts you even if you feel like you're more protected by it #now a lot of them don't have wildly satisfying answers to the question of #'i'm here now what do I do about it' #but also it is a complex question to answer in a fictional narrative #kat reads fma #ok I will knock it off for now and get back to cooking dinner

Hi, Kat! I saw your post earlier about the New Mandalorians, and wondered if you have the time or energy to expand on that at all? If not, or you don't feel like it, feel free to ignore this. I've been interested in writing a fic where Mandalorians play a major role, but have been avoiding it given how much contention there is around so much of it, and just how challenging it is to keep straight what's Disney canon, Legends, and fanon. I'm also mostly not a comics reader, so I know I'm missing a big chunk of info there. So any chance you could point me to where to look for some of this information? Like, Death Watch being deported to an "overcrowded and undersupplied" moon. Is that extrapolation from what we see of Concordia in TCW, or are there additional sources that get into more detail? I'm also curious where we see Death Watch/warrior Mandalorians being POC? Jango is, of course, but I've heard other people claim that, other than Jango and the KOTOR materials set several thousand years in the past, we don't really see onscreen Mando POC until Rebels, after TCW creators got backlash for making all the New Mandalorians and Death Watch white Vikings. Are there other sources that show the exiled warrior Mandos being POC? Any help you can give me figuring this out would be greatly appreciated! I know fanworks can go in whatever directions their creators want to, but I want to at least make sure I'm working from a clear understanding of what I'm starting from! Thanks you.

It's very definitely an extrapolation, but based on what we see pretty much solely in TCW, specifically "The Mandalore Plot" episodes.

First, if you look at shots of Sundari, the Mandalorian capital, everyone is white and blond and Human. Maybe it was the animators being lazy, maybe it was a conscious choice, but it's still jarring, especially in contrast to most background shots elsewhere in the galaxy. Take a screencap of anywhere else and it's pretty mixed as far as Humans and aliens go. Not in Sundari.

Second, re: Death Watch being deported. I'm not talking about Death Watch. I'm talking about the warriors, who Satine specifically says were "exiled" to Concordia. And she and Obi-Wan have a conversation about how, even though Concordia was once an agricultural settlement, it was strip-mined to the point that forests were just starting to grow back. Extrapolating, that means Concordia probably has to import everything. I can't remember if it's Satine specifically who says it, or one of the other NMs, but they also say they presume all the warriors have all died out. And like. yikes. There's a pretty big implication there.

As for the warrior Mandalorians being POC, at the very least there are more POC characters among them than among the NMs. Clan Wren, I'm thinking of, and then. Jango and his disavowal by the NMs is a whole other can of worms that has a lot of racist overtones, imo. This post has a good breakdown of the issues regarding the Fetts, if you'd like to read it. It dips into Legends, but it's mostly based on TCW and the movies in those sections, so. There are your sources.

Edit: To clarify on why I find the "we presume the warriors all died out" so yikes. It's been about 20 years since Satine took power at most. A lot of the people exiled were probably young, to say nothing of how long people live in the gffa. How exactly are that many people supposed to have died in 20 years max without some outside factor? Add that to the fact that Concordia is mostly barren and like. Hella yikes, imo.

If we’re talking who I’d rather want to know and be friends with irl. Then it definitely would be Augustine.

But if we’re talking who’s character I think is the most interesting. Then it would definitely be Lysandre. - On that note I do also think Augustine’s character is pretty interesting.

But now that snow is falling outside in lengths of up to 20cm~, I do tend to think of Augustine and his time as a child/apprentice of Rowan in Sinnoh. And him just exploring and doing the field tasks that Rowan sent him out on.

But then again I do fall asleep almost every night holding Lysandrechu’s tiny pika-hand. And carrying him around in the hood of my hoodie. And I guess just sitting with him in general. And I did once just bring a bag with me out on a non-bag-necessary walk just to have Lysandrechu and minimore with me soooooo….

Since you're all things TOG I hope it's alright to assume these questions for that fandom, so that's through the lens I'll be answering with 🤗

4. What was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?

I have "I block liberally" in my bio for a reason lol.

I mean, I strive not to label anyone by adjectives as if that's all they are - and lol, plenty of people find me annoying, too! - but looking at my blocked list, the majority overall theme (keeping in mind there's individual circumstances too, so not a general commentary on every single person blocked) but yeah, the majority? People who stalk and harass people across platforms - over nothing more than what they ship, kinks, etc.

Like I'm not talking about someone who sends their friend a post and wants to discuss to process or something - but like coordinated campaigns, spite events, efforts of several people across platforms, not only against one person but anyone associates with them, and/or telling people what public spaces they're allowed to be in, what ship positions they should or should not write, events they engage in, who to talk to, etc etc.

It's one thing to write on your own personal blog what you're into, and would love to see more of (I do that, too!) - but once it slides into one on one hounding, name calling, harassment, yeah, bye.

8. Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

Okrrr I'm hesitant to call it "wrong" because well, in life there's always exceptions, so maybe uh, let's reframe as ill-informed? And really, this isn't fandom's fault when the one effin piece of marketing Netflix did was string together a few random bullet points of "facts" for our Immortal Family and then a chunk of people have been dissecting the conflicting comic, movie, and now blink-and-you'll-miss-it marketing of said movie ever since (including, but certainly not limited to: where is Joe from, and why was he in Jerusalem?)

But as someone who's background and studies involve Church history, I'll admit I've been a bit 🫠 at some of the things stated as "facts" in regard to Nicky’s background. I'm not suggesting that someone should have to study up on any given subject in order to write fic (like, it's free fic, not a thesis), but I'm surprised how prevalent it is?

Just this narrative that Nicky *had* to be of noble birth, *and* automatically be more learned than Joe, *and* was a virgin *and* essentially wore his cassock right under the armor onto the battlefield (I'm having a little fun with that last one to lighten the mood lol).

Since I know I like to be informed when someone presents historical facts - I'll link a few articles and links below:

@qqueenofhades wrote an excellent post about the why a priest would not be wielding a weapon - and here's a book about how the Church forbade it, though (ironically, out of the Crusades) thoughts shifted about the Church being actively involved in the sense of authorizing and even directing military campaigns - but again, the average priest maybe had a weapon in the 1200s, and solely for the sake of self protection while traveling. But no, your average parish priest wasn't swinging a long sword onto the battlefield in his cassock.

Here's some information about how non nobles could become priests, or heck, even illegitimate children of priests could become priests.

And yes, 100% there was a social hierarchy within the Church and often to climb it you were likely educated and noble etc etc etc - and yet our Church history does include having illiterate popes, too (and really, just because someone is illiterate doesn't mean they are unlearned or stupid or incapable of learning it at any time. It doesn't have to be an either/or).

And though of course celibacy was encouraged from the beginning, the Church did not make an official decree about it until the 1100s. Priests had families and children - though not often - and yes, there were definitely clergy and religious who were not interested in making, much less, upholding vows of chastity around Nicky’s mortal timeline.

All that to say, that though it's not impossible that a random priest (perhaps a military chaplain ministering to soldiers?) found himself needing to grab a sword on the battlefield in the chaos around him (because perhaps he had a few years of training with a sword as a kid before being sent to a monastary?) - I don't think it was the given I've seen some people declare it as?

But here's the sad truth: Nicky is just a fictional character with conflicting canon sources. So, there will always be discourse. Sigh.

However, for anyone reading along and looking for more resources for their Crusades fic, I've written one up here, and linked not only other sources, but from @actualmermaid resource post as well as the old guard hub resource doc.

16. You can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

Hmmmm I'm not sure if I'm like deeply offended by any particular tropes/canon as much as I filter out certain tags due to personal reasons, etc - I mean even the whole Nicky priest discourse is (for some) potentially rooted in priest kink love lol, so I mean, to each his own?

I definitely filter out the noncon that has happened between Joe and Nicky, but again, that has more to do with personal reasons vs say, a judgment on content (though please pleaseeeee tag it properly).

So! First off my quilt! (Because I have fewer pictures and less to say about it)

It’s really hard to get pictures of because it’s about 7’x7’ 😅 I finished in about two weeks with my machine. It’s really big and cozy and soft and at some point I’ll figure out what closet it’ll be stored in

But my FRIEND’S QUILT!

It’s about 4’x4.5’ish and I added up approximately how long things took and it was about 147 hours (which might be the low end) and took the course of 4 and a half months of near constant work for when I wasn’t busy at my actual job or mandatory socializing stuff. Hell, I worked on making hexagons in my car before my shift would start even.

No one has been able to escape talking to me since July without hearing about this quilt. Not even all of my tables that I serve have gotten away quilt-talk free lmao

I’d gotten sucked into the Quilting side of TikTok and kept seeing this same sort of hexagon quilt and I just had to try making it myself. It starts with you cutting out circles and the way you fold/tack down the points turns the circles into hexagons and you don’t have any raw edges of fabric to deal with. Then you whip stitch the edges of the hexagons together to eventually become the overall body of the quilt. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do a pattern or have it be kinda random and try keeping colors from touching themselves too frequently but my wonderful super big brained friend @centrumlumina helped me figure out a daisy pattern that would repeat and use the maximum number of hexagons I had available (and then another friend also helped me pivot to an altered version of it once we realized somewhere near the beginning I was off my a single side but I was in too deep to totally seam rip everything and I am kissing both of their brains and I am eternally grateful)

She doesn’t know I was working on anything and it’s been torture keeping it quiet from her this whole time since I started (July 2nd)! I’m actually giving it to her later today (she was going through a move and I didn’t want to give her another thing to worry about packing right when I finished it late November). She’s very bright and pastel and flowery and I just really hope that whatever life throws at her next that this quilt can just help remind her that she’s worth the effort and that she’s very loved.

Pairing: Elijah Mikaelson x Reader

When you broke up with Elijah Mikaelson you'd expected many things from him. Disappointment, irritation or maybe even indifference. What you hadn't expected was his anger.

He didn't yell or argue, he simply narrowed his eyes and walked away. Every time he saw you after that he stared with a clenched jaw and sharp gaze. No words had been spoken between you since that night three weeks ago.

Now you were spending the evening with his siblings at Nik's request. After an hour or two, Elijah disappeared. Once you noticed, you rolled your eyes. Really. The man was a thousand years old and was acting like a toddler. Frankly you were tired of it.

"I'll be back," you told the hybrid.

He smirked and took a sip of his drink. "Take all the time in the world, love. None of us are going anywhere anytime soon."

You shook your head and left the room to head to Elijah's personal library. It was technically his study but there were far too many books for it to be anything other than a library.

You stepped into the room without knocking and shut the door behind you.

Elijah stood at one of the windows with a drink in his hand and his back turned toward you. "Why are you here?" he asked after a long beat of silence.

"Why are you so angry?"

His head snapped in your direction with a look of confusion on his face. "You can't be serious."

You arched a brow and shrugged.

His long strides ate up the space between you until he was standing right in front of you. "Perhaps you recall the ending of our relationship."

"Of course, but I don't see why you are upset about it. It's not as if you were invested in the relationship. I needed more. I told you that." What you didn't say is that you were head over heels in love with the man in front of you. That you had cried for weeks before finally ending the relationship.

Sure, he called you his girlfriend. He bought you trinkets and spent time with you when he could be bothered. And that was the problem. You were an afterthought. A woman that filled a role and the space by his side when he needed to keep up appearances. And it wasn't enough for you. Not anymore.

He pointed at you with the hand holding his glass. "Not invested? You think I wasn't invested?"

You just looked at him, uncertain what answer he was looking for.

He sighed and set his glass down on the table beside him. "This. This is why I am angry." He studied the floor for a moment before looking back up at you. "I am angry with myself for ever making you feel that way."

You sucked in a little breath, surprised at his words. He gave a sad smile and stepped forward, closing the distance between you. His hands cupped your face as he looked you over.

"You are the center of my universe. My entire being revolves around you and I am devastated for ever letting you believe that it doesn't." He licked his lips as his eyes darted down to yours before looking back up. "Please, please, come back to me and let me love you the way you deserve."

You saw nothing but sincerity in his eyes. "I love you so much, Elijah. But I can't do this if you don't love me the same. No more pushing me away. I won't survive the heartbreak a second time."

His lips pressed against yours in a hungry, desperate kiss. After a long moment, he pulled back only to lay his forehead against yours. "I swear to you, I will never give you reason to doubt me again."

For Mace/Jasper. Knight Mace and Padawan Depa are OK a mission and Depa gets a psychic distress call. Turns out Arla is mildly force sensitive and Depa is different enough from her captors for her to latch onto in what she thinks are dreams. After rescuing her Mace tries to find her family before deciding if he'll have to relocate her to one of the corps to recover, and meets Jaster. Mild Depa/Arkansas and Jaster/Mace over Mace's parenting skills. (Is Jaster a shatterpoint?)

Okay I definitely appreciate the prompt but also please have mercy, if I laugh this hard again I am going to cough up a lung. Depa/the embodiment of the state of Arkansas is also a high bar for even me.
