An affordable refuge: Café de Coral in Kennedy Town, Hong Kong. Courtesy Karen Cheung.
Hong Kong, Every afternoon
The most famous “cafe” in Hong Kong is not in fact a cafe; it is Café de Coral, a fast food chain known for its baked pork chop rice and meat tenderiser-heavy steak served on a “hot sizzling plate.” Here you will not find discussions about Nietzsche or poetry readings; instead, you get retired Hongkongers reading the newspaper or simply napping in the summer afternoon, trying to escape their stuffy apartments where they could not afford to turn on the air-conditioning.

Quote
I'm not formerly depressed, but rather a sometimes depressed person.  But if I kept looking over my shoulder, wary that my depression would return, or let the dread over Hong Kong's political future overtake my days, I would miss all the life that goes on in between.  If I wanted to wait for my circumstances, my city, and this world to improve definitively before I resumed living, that day would never come.  With the cards that we have been dealt, everything is going to be shit for a long time.  Our lives are but collections of quiet moments amid the chaos: the watering thrill of spicy food, the rain that looks like coconut flakes from my window, the way a tree drapes itself over my street, speckling sunlight on the pavement.  These present moments belong to us even if our futures do not.

2023/06/24 BGM: Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
It was a day off today. This morning I read Karen Cheung's "The Impossible City" with Blur's "Parklife". I guess that I had misunderstood about this book (or the place Hong Kong itself). TBH I had expected THE Hong Kong where people try to achieve their democracy. The place where is crowded with the atmosphere of tear gas and political demonstration. But this book doesn't show that kind of Hong Kong. I won't say that this book has no worth to be read by this fact. I have to think about this again because I could be trying to find "THE Hong Kong by various social media" and "THE Hong Kong I wanted to watch/enjoy". NO! I guess this author would say this. NO! The real Hong Kong, and the life in that town must be richer than that banal bias of mine. This book must be one of the best books I have read in this year. Yes, it is a great masterpiece. I have been attracted by her straight/honest words which describe her difficulties of life. It "knocks" my mind actually.
Influenced by that "The Impossible City", I look back to my youthful days (but not in anger). Ah, at that time I was really a idiot student. For me at that time, Damon Albarn from Blur was actually my hero. Almost everyday I had been into Blur's great albums. "Modern Life is Rubbish", "Parklife", and "The Great Escape". As you know, these are quite British albums. I can treat them as "Blue-eyed music", not any "funky/groovy ones" (of course, I welcome your different opinions!). Now I remember this... At that time, I could have these ideas in my "young and lovely" head as "Why was I born in this world as this kind of Asian one?", "Why is this town not London, Liverpool, or Manchester?", and "Heaven knows I'm miserable now"...At least, at that time I had NO interest in any funky/groovy music (Jazz, Funk, Hiphop) or world music (Reggae, Rocksteady)... I might blame myself too much. I believe that Damon Albarn could learn a lot from those sources of rich global music masterpieces.
This afternoon I went to the main house of my group home. There, I confessed about the failure of money management to the chief. I also talked about the "comfort zone". TBH I have a twisted mind so could feel comfortable if I was blamed terribly. If I am praised a lot (Ah, I can feel a lot of actual kindness from a lot of people on Discord, MeWe, and also my private life scene!), then I feel uncomfortable. I tend to think by that as "I am not such a great one". I can't accept that "praised" myself. "I must be a piece of rubbish", "I can be nothing but an idiot", and I do eat a lot or buy various things too much (my virtual self-hurt I guess). But this can't be any excuses. I want to "enjoy" those praising words... The evening I talked about this with a Russian friend of mine o WhatsApp. She taught me honestly as she had showed her braveness to attend various meeting. That's her important trial to go out of her "comfort zone"... I thought I should say farewell to my comfortable nest in my mind. I decided to go to another English meeting.
And this evening I enjoyed a presentation on ZOOM by a French translator and Rakugo (a traditional Japanese comedy) performer, Cyril Coppini. He has translated Gosyo Aoyama's popular manga "Detective Conan" from Japanese into English. He taught us how he had encountered the Japanese language. And he had learned Japanese literature and culture by ancient books, quested Rakugo's greatness, the reason why he started translating "Conan"... And at Q&A time I asked him as bravely as I could. "There are a lot of forms/styles of Japanese language. Ancient literature's one, Rakugo's traditional one, and manga also has funny one... Cyril san, what kind of Japanese language is your favorite?".  Then Cyril answered us that "I like Osaka dialect, But every Japanese form must be profound. I can't stop studying because of its depth". I thought it could be the same as my idea about learning English... Ah, today was a really grateful, happy day (Indeed I made a failure about money). About identity as Japanese, and how precious learning foreign languages are... I thought about them once again.

'Shaolin Soccer' – Stephen Chow brings comic style to soccer on Paramount+
‘Shaolin Soccer’ – Stephen Chow brings comic style to soccer on Paramount+
In the early 2000s, Hong Kong comedy star Stephen Chow stole Jackie Chan’s crown as Hong Kong’s clown prince of kung fu comedy. He was dubbed the Jim Carrey of Hong Kong by American critics, but that completely misses his appeal. Sure, Chow is a brilliant physical comedian with an unpredictable streak, but he also has the spirit of an overly excitable kid (even at 40), and he was more than just…

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤
1. World Enough And Time (MFMM/Doctor Who, Phrack, 51k)
This will always be my favourite of my fics. It's the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries/Doctor Who crossover where Phryne is a Time Lady, Dot is from the past, Mac is from the future and Jack is just trying to work out what is happening. It's an AU that contains eight other AUs (including a Regency AU, a Mad Max Fury Road AU and a fake-marriage-with-aliens AU) and it represented an enormous milestone for me in my writing.
2. all the men and women merely players (Ted Lasso, Ted/Trent, Roy/Keeley/Jamie, 50k)
The Ted Lasso Station Eleven post-apocalyptic AU in which, in the wake of a devastating global pandemic, American comedy actor Ted Lasso leads a Shakespearean theatre troupe across the ruins of England. It combines my love of Ted Lasso, Station Eleven, Shakespeare and theatre, and it's probably the fic I've worked hardest on.
3. I Live And Lie For You (Good Omens/James Bond, Bond/Q, Aziraphale/Crowley, Adam/Eve, 13k)
The fic in which Wensleydale grows up to be Q. Features avocados, cats named after mathematicians, car chases in the Bentley, questionable ice-cream flavours, far too many spies at St James' Park, the Antichrist in his fuckboi era and tardigrades. I don't even like James Bond but I loved writing this.
4. The Legend Continues (Rivers of London, Michael Cheung/Sahra Guleed, 8.5k)
A closer, canon-compliant look at how a hijabi cop might have inadvertently apprenticed herself to the legendary swordsman of London's Chinatown and then started dating him. I always wanted to write an wuxia in English! Features my holy trinity of subtle Asian traits: bubble tea, passive-aggressive aunties and an original character clearly based on Michelle Yeoh. Fun fact: this fic was named after an actual Chinatown restaurant called Leong's Legend Continues, a spinoff of Leong's Legend (ironically Leong's Legend is still around but the Legend Continues has since, well, failed to continue).
5. Best Revenge Is Your Paper (Daredevil/The Punisher, Frank Castle/Karen Page, 15.5k)
In which Karen Page gets a bunch of bylines, pisses off a lot of people, tries not to fall in love with her newsmaker and fails. Kastle was the ship that brought me back to fandom after a five-year hiatus, and Karen remains one of my favourite fictional reporters of all time (the others are Trent Crimm, of course, and Hildy Johnson from His Girl Friday). It's been another five years since this fic and oh, I've had such a time.
Thank you for this ask!

INSIDER STORIES ABOUT FAYE (SUMMARY / ROUGH TRANSLATION)
Veteran promoter and publicist in Hong Kong's music industry Cheung Wing Kai reminisces with Cantopop vinyl collector Ivan Wong
Faye the 'camel'
Faye was like a 'camel' - she could work for a long time without drinking or eating anything.
She is a diva without airs.
When the time came for her to do the work, she did everything well and would leave immediately after doing it properly. After she was finished, she would get in the car right after.
She works the fastest among the many artists he has worked with.
Shot an MV in 15 minutes
He once heard from a TVB director that she took 15 minutes to shoot an MV during the Cinepoly era (he forgot which song). TVB filmed the MV in a back alley in the city. In 15 minutes, the entire MV was shot and the result was not bad because Faye knew exactly what she was doing.
Not as cool as you think
One year he arranged the Po Leung Charity Show (Gala Spectacular). There were many stars involved including Faye, Leon Lai, Harlem Yu, Terry Lin, Candy Lo, Karen Mok, F4, etc. Because it was a charity show, the production did not have a lot of money. Hairstylists and makeup artists for big stars is not cheap. Faye also uses star makeup artists and hairstylists. But they could only afford 'charity prices'. After hearing this, Faye discussed it with her assistant. Because she knew it was a charity show, she would rather do her own makeup. She was willing to save money and didn't want the company to spend unnecessary money. They were really grateful to Faye (along with her managers Katie and Sister Kwan).
"I think this heavenly queen is really not as cool as you think. In fact, I think she is compassionate and righteous. On the surface, she thinks she is cool. She is actually cold on the outside and hot on the inside."
No dancers
Faye only had one request during that performance: she didn't want dancers. But the problem was her performance was over 10 minutes of singing. It’s difficult to do a live performance without dancers (it's usually required by TVB). He told the production to try to keep the number of dancers as little as possible. There were no complaints from Faye or her manager.
Doesn't like to do publicity
Faye rarely holds autograph sessions. When she was at Sony Music, there was a signing event for "To Love" held at Neway's in Causeway Bay. This was before the concert ("Faye Extraordinary"). Katie suddenly said: "Do we need to do some publicity for the concert?" It was suggested that the publicity could be held during the band rehearsal. It would be a good time to meet reporters.
Faye really didn't want to do it. She really doesn't like publicity and doesn't like to socialize. She just wanted to put on the concert. Why do so much?
Sister Kwan (scolded her): If you don't do publicity, you might as well not do anything at all. Don't even do the concerts.
Faye was willing to do it after listening and the issue was over.
On the day of the concert rehearsal, he suddenly received a call from Ah Fei's assistant, requesting him to come upstairs right away. Faye saw so many reporters and was reluctant to do the publicity work.
He usually never talked to Faye before. But when she saw him, she was willing to cooperate with the media again. He guessed that in her mind, it made her at ease because back when she was at Cinepoly, she did a concert with Leon Lai whom he often worked with then. She was familiar with him. She is quiet but she knew who he was and there's a natural understanding.
So she began to take photos, did interviews, and sang. She may have refused at first but finally did it all.
He thinks the heavenly queen is absolutely not as cold or impersonal as everyone says.

Quote
I am afraid that despite everything I claim, I have romanticized the city.  I am still learning how not to reduce the people I love to stories, trading their lives for a coveted byline.  There are other people whose stories are essential, but are missing here because I do not have the right to write for them.  I cannot force my community into the story you want, and then return to them and live with the consequences of my untruthfulness.  I am not here to exploit and then leave.  If you promise to try to understand, I will exploit myself for you.  But I will not apologize anymore.

2023/06/22 English
BGM: Faye Wong - 夢中人
It was a day off for me, but it was raining so I spent my precious morning time really lazily (I even slept again!). After that, from 10:30 am I started using ZOOM to attend a meeting about English on ZOOM. Today we tried to make some sentences by using the useful phrases as "get along with" and "be far from". Suddenly, I made a sentence "Russia has to get along with Ukraine". Yes, it is a clearly controversial or tough one so I got embarrassed. But other members accepted this with kindness so I felt pleasure a lot. And also I tried to make another one "I'm far from bilingual"... After that, a member from India taught us an interesting concept "the millionaire mind". It was really grateful time. I went to the library and borrowed some books. I had wanted to borrow Kazuko Fujimoto's ones (one is about feminism in America, and another is about Richard Brautigan). But I found Karen Cheung's "The Impossible City" at the "new books" corner. I decided to read that by my inner voice.
I finished reading Dan SHAO's book about translation. It must contain a lot of "ingredients" (I want to say about the topics or pieces of idea this book has). But it is never "too much" for me. I have been attracted by the topic about Kurt Vonnegut (his works themselves, and how he has been read in Japan through translation). I have to say this. I have NEVER read his books so I reserved some books of collections of his short stories by the site of the library. Learning about various Japanese translators who did Vonnegut's masterpieces into Japanese (as Hisashi Asakura), I thought that it was good for me or us not to become a translator (or I have to admit that "I could never be"). Because translation means not replace English words with proper Japanese words automatically/mechanically. I need to learn the writer/author's background, and also I have to try to replace words by thinking how they belong to their context. I have to read every sentence as carefully as I can... It is really sensitive. I learned that simple and important fact by that Dan SHAO's work.
This afternoon I tried to translate the questions a Russian woman had sent to me/us into Japanese by myself. I have to say this that my skill of translation is really poor (we have to follow the fact about translation I wrote above). I want to be careful not to misread or make mistakes through that translation process... And suddenly I thought how I could start living my life with autism peacefully, like making harmony. It's important for me that I am now enjoying being a member of the "self-help" group. By joining that group, I could learn that there are some autistic people besides me in this small rural town... I can't say if I/we can invite that Russian woman in our meeting. And also I can't say exactly if it is good for us to put Japanese lifehacks into the Russian autism life/situation. But... I guess (by my inner voice) that it would work better/useful for her even it it might be a little. I have to work hard to realize that project/dream one day, in the near future.
This evening I started ZOOM again to attend another meeting. In this meeting, a member/friend shared various episodes when she had lived in Moji, a city in Kyushu area in Japan. After that, I started reading Karen Cheung's book I had borrowed this morning. I have never been in Hong Kong so should say I am ignorant. Of course, the Hong Kong was the place people had tried to achieve democracy by themselves (I can remember "The Umbrella Movement"). I once had thought that it had been clearly different from Japan. TBH I rarely enjoy travelling (or I should say "I have NEVER been out of this country"). In this morning's meeting about English, we enjoyed an "if" tale. If we had "Anywhere Door", which is an amazing tool of Doraemon. If there were Doraemon... Then I would like to go to Hong Kong and Russia to meet my friends. I also would go to Tokyo... TBH I am really, terribly broke so I stay in Shiso. But as the Underworld's song, I imagine this. Where would I go if my boss gave me "Two months off"?
