Haikyuu Chapter 346: Calculations
REFLECTION:
First off, there was a popularity contest for the best game in the series...like, two games before the series is even over. Here are the top 3:
1st place: Karasuno Vs. Nekoma 2nd place: Karasuno Vs. Aobajousai 3rd place: Karasuno Vs. Shiratorizawa
That's right: the game they devoted an entire season to...came in third place. Let that sink in...
Anyway, Fukurodani wins their match to the shock of no one. Karasuno regroups, strategizes, settles on "Try hard and positive thinking" and gets back out there. The chapter ends with the team entering the fray again. I'm...not excited. They gotta win, right? They gotta go up against Fukurodani who they don't have the same level of tension with like they did with Nekoma and Aobajousai. They don't even have the menace of Shiratorizawa. I'm sorry but that popularity contest came too early. I'm scaring the hos, I'm sorry.

Bubly, cheerful, and able to light up a room with just a smile, Hinata Shouyo is the embodiment and the real definition of a human sun that hits you right through your heart with just a smile.
Serious, stern, sassy and smart is the exact opposite of Hinata, but it lies within his life and soul that is hidden from his friends or "harem" (that he doesn't even know he has).
What will be their reaction to seeing this different side of him?

Haikyuu Chapter 52: What Makes An Ace
REFLECTION:
The chapter starts with Baby Kageyama (aww) asking Ageless Oikawa to teach him how to serve toss. Oikawa hears him ask him to hear his motto (in spite of Baby Kageyama trying to correct him) and tells him it's "If you're going to attack, then keep it up until the opponent breaks!". Kageyama tries to ask him to teach him again but Wise Old Man Oikawa tells him that he would never teach someone something that can be used against him in the future. Kindaichi literally has to call him out for picking fights with children.
BACK TO THE PRESENT
Summoning his strength, Tanaka returns the toss...and the ball is hit out of bounds. Aobajousai gets the point. Patrick Oikawa Bateman reveals his evil plan internally: after getting Tanaka, he's moving on to Asahi. Then he'll get Tsukishima and Yamaguchi before finally...dismembering and boiling rendering Hinata completely useless. Karasuno has to call a time fucking out for Ukai to get the heads on straight. After some advice, Ukai asks Kageyama about his dump toss, namely...what the fuck was that? He warns that the dump toss is high risk because if the opponent sees it coming, they can block it immediately. He then reminds Kageyama that this isn't Kageyama v Oikawa: Dawn of Justice. It's Karasuno Vs. Aobajousai and Other Amazing Adventures, Vol. 1.
BREAK!
The match continues and Evil Overlord Oikawa keeps picking on Tanaka, almost obsessively driven to break his spirit. He keeps going and going and fucking going until Karasuno has to call another fucking time out. One of the fans notes that, regardless of what anybody sees, the way Tanaka is being isolated and targeted is bound to wear him down. Hinata sees it too and wonders if he should say something. Tanaka's response?
Tumblr media
He apologizes to the team for getting scared and holding back even though he was talking shit throughout the match, saying he'll kick ass from this point forward. Ukai accepts his apology and repeats his "keep the ball in the air" advice from earlier. Still, the team is in trouble...and Oikawa has entered an unnerving state of calm.
Tumblr media
It's the recovery he needs for that crazy fucking spin of his. When he's back up, Karasuno can expect more of the same. The match continues with Tanaka being attacked yet again with him failing to toss the ball...and Hinata catching it for him. It's returned all over the place before Tanaka takes his revenge by spiking that shit through Aobajousai's defenses at the chapter's end. Karasuno's counterattack begins now.

Kageyama didn't perform too well in a match, and now the entire team except Asahi and Sugawara is blanking him, even going so far as to beat him up. One day, after a particularly bad beating, Oikawa finds him and decides to take Kageyama under his wing. He suggests to Kageyama, who is fed up with all the abuse, to transfer schools, and they plot sweet revenge against the Flightless Ravens. Meanwhile, already struggling without its genius setter and in turn its best weapon, the Freak-Quick, what will Karasuno do when they receive a giant shock at the Spring Tournament vs Aoba Johsai?

Iwaizumi for the character thingy? :)
Tumblr media
Buckle up, guys, because I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS AND YOU GUYS ASKED TO SEE MY LOVE LETTER TO IWAIZUMI SO.
First impression“Hmmm, seems like an unassuming supporting character.”…I can’t lie; Iwa-chan isn’t an early attention-grabber. The first time Seijou appeared, the focus was given to Kindaichi and Kageyama’s old rift (thus giving Kindaichi most of the scenes) and then Oikawa’s entrance. Iwaizumi’s mostly shafted at the beginning.
Impression nowI WILL MOVE MOUNTAINS FOR THIS BOI.You know how I love Oikawa? I love Iwaizumi more. I’m doing the fist-heart-clutch right now just thinking about him, ugh how is he so good. Here’s the thing: Iwaizumi is shown to have high physical strength, and is a strong wing spiker and ace with above-average skills. But he’s not exceptional in his volleyball potential, especially in a sports series populated with characters like Bokuto, Oikawa, Ushijima and even Aone.Where Iwaizumi shines is his role as an unwavering support/anchor for Oikawa. I’d argue that this was pre-planned from the start: their names when combined [ “一徹” ittetsu (the combination of ‘Hajime’ and ‘Tooru’)]  means ‘obstinate; stubborn; inflexible’, implying even in the character planning stage, Furudate had created these two to be optimal when paired together. Names aside, look at their dynamics; even with shipping goggles off, their synergy is undeniable, and after Oikawa’s grand introduction, they often appear together in off-scenes. I’ll spare you guys the more popular scenes (i.e. Iwaizumi knowing Oikawa would go watch Karasuno vs. Shiratorizawa) in favor of highlighting less obvious panels:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note that while Oikawa is the focus in both these frames (neither meant to highlight Iwaizumi in any form), Iwaizumi is also present. This is a constant recurrence in the manga; they’re often found physically standing together, or in close vicinity of each other. Then let’s talk about Iwaizumi as a stabilizing influence on Oikawa. This plays out in two aspects: the first is as a running gag that Iwaizumi is Oikawa’s keeper. Heck, even Irihata (the coach) tells Iwaizumi to fetch Oikawa in a fashion that implies that it’s something Iwaizumi’s done often enough. And of course, there are a flurry of gifs of Iwaizumi’s terrifying expression cowing Oikawa into easy submission (“Nobody hits me like that! - oh, Iwachan.” *follows docilely*)The second aspect is the more critical one, and likely the reason why they make such a great ship: Iwaizumi actively bolsters and maintains Oikawa’s sense of confidence in his skills. It’s not wrong to say that Iwaizumi actually actively enables Oikawa to play at the peak of his skills:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at what Iwaizumi says here, and how Oikawa responds: there’s a sense that this is an oft-repeated argument between these two, with Iwaizumi actively reminding Oikawa that he’s actually good in his role. I’ve said in Oikawa’s character analysis that despite his confidence, Oikawa has a core of insecurity that if left unchecked, could be destructive on his psyche and well-being. Following that, I don’t think I’m overreaching in saying that while he’s not the only factor in play, Iwaizumi is a crucial contributor to keeping Oikawa’s confidence at the healthy level it is. He also acts as Oikawa’s check, preventing him from doing regrettable things that range from trivial (‘Don’t stay up all night’) to significant (preventing Oikawa from injuring himself/ injuring Kageyama):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oikawa’s trust in Iwaizumi is high enough that Iwaizumi’s words actually penetrate and stick - they work, and Oikawa calms down enough to play at his best again. Note that the above is while they’re in Kitagawa Daiichi - the Iwaoi relationship started early, and continued into the Seijou arc. If you need further proof of their implicit trust in each other, look no further than that iconic in-manga analysis that Oikawa will always toss to Iwaizumi in a pinch. In short, instinctually, Oikawa will always trust Iwaizumi above all his other teammates.
Ushijima may have said Oikawa would be better off in Shiratorizawa, but take a minute to think of the dynamics in Shiratorizawa. Yes, the volleyball skill level is higher, which would utilize Oikawa’s strengths more, but think of the team members’ various personalities, and consider Oikawa’s insecurities again. While I do like Shiratorizawa on its own merit, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to conclude that Oikawa is likely to burn himself out/injure himself in an attempt to ‘be better’ beyond his feasible limits without Iwaizumi around. Heck, think of Aobajousai minus Iwaizumi - how do you think Oikawa would fare?tl;dr: All hail Iwa-chan, the Oikawa-whisperer.
Okay, some quick non-related Oikawa-stuff: Iwaizumi is also extremely perceptive and authoritative; it’s implied he’s more reliable than Oikawa as a vice-captain in club affairs. This shows best with Kindaichi and most importantly, Kyoutani. Iwaizumi asserts his dominance with his physical strength, but it’s worth noting that he’s aware of it and does use it to direct Kyoutani. Also, Iwaizumi’s is always shown as steady - not once do you see him being jealous, or tired of dealing with Oikawa. He is patient, observant, and pro-active with a good sense of self-esteem - case in point, he tells Oikawa he looks forward to meeting him as an equal rival, placing himself toe-to-toe with Oikawa’s massive skills. Iwa-chan is perfect.
Favorite momentEvery moment is a favorite Iwa-chan moment. But here, have casual-clothes!Iwaizumi, with casual-Oikawa!burn:
Tumblr media
Idea for a storyThe Overwatch AU mentioned in Oikawa’s section, with Iwaizumi as Hanzo. Ideally, I’d like to write a longfic featuring Iwaizumi’s POV one day though, set in a contemporary slice-of-life setting.
Unpopular opinionUh, again, I really don’t think I have unpopular opinions?…But I downplay Iwaizumi’s insulting of Oikawa - it’s usually strategic, and he times it well; he doesn’t toss them out without good purpose. It’s pretty much a boke-tsukkomi relationship. Also, I feel that it’s unlikely that Iwaizumi will go pro - as much as this manga hypes up their skills, it’s worth remembering they’re only at high-school level; even on this playing field, Iwaizumi is not particularly exceptional skill-wise, with most of his playing potential amplified by Oikawa. He’ll likely continue playing in university, maybe more actively if it’s with Oikawa (mostly at Oikawa’s insistence), but aside from upkeeping his general fitness (gym, maybe), he’s likely to downscale his volleyball playing over time in favor of focusing on his studies.
Favorite relationshipGosh, I wonder what it could be.
Favorite headcanonIwaizumi actually does decently at every sport; in high school, whenever other teams need a filler, he’s a common go-to substitute. Iwaizumi eventually majors in Physiotherapy - not (solely) because of Oikawa, but because he’s genuinely interested in understanding how the body works and how injuries effect it. Iwaizumi is a late riser, and extremely hard to rouse in the morning if there are no classes. He eventually learns to drive, but prefers to ride shotgun. Iwaizumi is not a particularly romantic person, but never hesitates to say ‘I love you’ to his s/o (Oikawa). He’s surprisingly weak to physical affection; he’ll never say it out loud, but he loves being kissed along his neck, and sleeping in his s/o (Oikawa’s) lap.[character meme]

Hi! Great blog, your thoughts are on point and I love the gifs you use! :) I think of Oikawa as a contradiction, the clever airhead. We've been exposed to so many aspects of his character (through himself but also his best friend, fellow 3rd years, teammates, nephew, all the ladies, and the quality rivals be it Ushijima or Kageyama). An amazing setter but his reckless training and jealous attitude give him extra depth. If you could, I'd love to see your list of Oikawa's Top 5 character traits :)
Hi! Thank you so much for the ask, and sorry it’s taken me a while to answer this. I really loved reading how you saw Oikawa’s character portrayal - I think in terms of Oikawa and his personality traits, it’s quite tough to decide when he is such a multifaceted character. But without further ado:
5. The fact that he still came to watch the shiratorizawa vs karasuno match despite his self-proclaimed ‘hatred’ of both teams
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In all honesty, he just really cares about volleyball and I think deep down he was rooting for kageyama and hinata despite being all tsuntsun about it (also megane oikawa)
4. His amazing leadership as captain of the aobajousai
Tumblr media
Not only does everyone in the team look up to him during the matches, they also place their complete trust and faith in him. He knows when to be serious and when to be an utter troll (esp with iwachan :P)
Tumblr media
but I really respect how he can go from above to below; what a legend.
Tumblr media
3. Despite being two years older, the fact that he is such a child with kageyama and hinata XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. The fact that he is so hardworking and willing to push himself to improve so much even though he is already an amazing player
Tumblr media
Despite his aloof demeanor that he likes to put up in front of people, he’s actually extremely serious when it comes to volleyball, and I think that’s what makes him such a brilliant player. This scene was one of my favourites of Oikawa because we see that moment when all his years of practicing and volleyball instinct that he’s built up as a result, allow him to make that perfect toss to his ace.
1. THE FACT THAT HE IS AN ABSOLUTE GIGANTIC DORK
Tumblr media
OKOK so maybe you all expected this because of the nature of this blog, but I mean how can I not?? He is literally the grand king of dorks in this series!!
Tumblr media
Look at him
Tumblr media
He’s just a gigantic alien-loving nerd at heart, and I love him for it. :D

30 Days Haikyuu!! Challenge
(by @makkisangel)
Here we go, beautiful people, and today I’m gonna cry all my tears because is the day of my
12. Favorite match
Oh gosh I’m so emotional about all of this. Because this makes me always cry. Basically, the real problem about Haikyuu is the following:
Tumblr media
(Ok, now, I don’t really like EVERY team *coff coff* Shiratorizawa *coff coff*(please don’t hate me), but the main concept stands, and it can be fully applied to what I’m just going to say.)
Because, basically, my favourite match is the Semifinal of the Spring High-Miyagi Prefecture Representative Playoffs, and so the third Aobajōsai vs Karasuno match.
Tumblr media
(credits to @cofeekki)
Now, about this match there’s so much to say and I’m not here to analize every psychological aspect of this event (gosh I could write a 30-pages essay only about this). I just want to say that’s my favourite because:
the Karasuno boys finally aknowledge their strength (Hinata with the last spike), they confront with their fears and conquer them (Kageyama vs Oikawa), they realize fully what being a team really means (the whole gears metaphore) and they’re finally capable of withstanding their rivals.
everything about this match is so passionate and full of meaning
the end left a bittersweet feeling in me, because I was so happy about Karasuno victory, because that was the result of months of hard training and that would have meant that, yeah, they would have gone forward, and they deserved it.
but on the other side, Haikyuu is not a manga about heroes vs villains. There’s not wrong vs right. They’re just kids going to high school, struggling with their emotions, giving everything for what they think is important, and because of this I also suffered for Seijoh’s defeat.
even if we didn’t see on screen (they focused on Karasuno’s development, of couse), the boys of Aobajousai had to train as well in those months, and they also gave theirselves in the training, because we saw that they improved as well (and I’m talking about everyone, not only Oikawa). Karasuno is not the only one who worked hard.
so it’s sad to see that, even if they’re considered one of the best four in the Miyagi prefecture, they couldn’t go ahead, they couldn’t go to the nationals where I think they would have done just as better as Karasuno is doing right now.
(Yeah, I know that maybe some of you are tired of the whole “Oikawa deserved to go to the nationals, at least once”, but I think this is actually right: as I said before, there’s no villain vs heroes in Haikyuu, so, as a person who struggled with that almost her whole life, I think the saddest feeling is when life doesn’t aknowledge all your hard work and your values)
anyway, I think I would be more sad if Karasuno would have lost, so in the end it’s better like this.
the whole Oikawa vs Ushijima speech (I read once a really well written post about this scene, and it touched me so much I have screenshots on my phone, but for the love of god I cannot find it anymore here on tumblr so I can’t make a reference for you)
this entire scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
gosh this made me loose five years of my life (my mind was basically divided between: IWA-CHAAAAAAN!! // DAI-CHAN YOU DID IT!!)
and then this:
Tumblr media
every time I watch this f*cking episode I cry all my tears (of joy and pain as well)
and in the end (just because this post is really too long already) Oikawa’s pain and the way he overcomes it and becomes aware of what he’s really worth is one of the main reasons I fell in love with him
As I said before, the challenge of today made me so emotional, and I’m sorry if the post of today is really long, forgive me plis. So I’ll cut it here.
Thank you for your attention, you’re amazing and I love you all! Bye ~
(credits for the gifs go to @volleygifs)
[Totally ot: one dumb person once told me that I liked Oikawa “just for his pretty face”… bruh, no. That’s not the reason at all. (Maybe one day I’ll write a post about this as well)]

Haikyuu Chapter 49: Versus The Grand King Take 2
REFLECTION:
The pre-game starts with Karasuno warming each other up, Sawamura even out-shouting Oikawa's fangirls. Meanwhile, the Neighborhood Association guy who trained Yamaguchi explains that our cinnamon bun has a way to go before he perfects his new technique. Oikawa captains his team and Takeda notes that, for a shithead, Oikawa has fostered a good atmosphere among his teammates. The game starts and, after some trash talk, gets underway. Aobajousai...fucks Karasuno before they could get a good hit in, racking up several points at the start. However, they were kind of expecting the good team to be good players so they don't get disheartened. In fact, Kageyama spikes on Aobajousai before telling Oikawa he will be fucking him up throughout the match, so be vigilant. Oikawa doesn't like that...
Prodigy Vs. Champion
