7. Is there a piece of clothing you think [character] is particularly fond of/that you imagine them wearing a lot or like to draw them in?

this is a tough one! there's a few characters that i probably stick with a main look or a few articles of clothing that are distinctive to them, and i'm always on my seto kaiba hoodie agenda, but i actually think the best answer is joey wheeler's jean jacket. in my head he's had this jacket for years and years. it is ripped in some places, the sleeves are fraying, it stinks of cigarettes even after he quits smoking, and he hand washes it so it doesn't lose that nostalgic scent (not at all based on someone i knew). it's a comfort item to him that he loves dearly.

9. Write a recommendation of someone else's fic you enjoyed!

this one is also hard because i love so many fics!!! and scrolling through my bookmarks reminded me of more that i love!!! there is a fic that i think has inspired my writing of kaijou more than any other, and i reread it constantly, and i have no idea if the author is even still writing, but if you are a kaijou fan you have to read "The Structure of Your Heart" by Chiharu. it is beautifully constructed and shows the progression of their relationship through stunningly domestic scenes. it captures seto's loneliness, his lack of experience with intimacy, and some beautiful moments that showcase jounouchi's own anxieties about himself and his relationships.

i am going to cheat a little and say if you are looking for a non-romantic fic "A Fresh Spring Green" by FloaromaMeadow studies Noah returning to the Kaiba home in an android body. it is crushingly sad in places and showcases (without being explicit) how gozaburo's abuse affected noah as well, and how he and seto are able to bond. lots of kaiba sib antics that explores the dynamic of three kaiba brothers i can only hope to touch on one day.

and one more since i'm hopping on the ryou train is "comb of iron and ashpodel (so bright and brazen)" by twelvemagpies which explores ryou's mental health problems, his disconnection with reality, his ghost sight, and is heartshipping which i adore but can never seem to write myself.

so i cheated a lot but i want to give poeple ~options~ and i do want to highlight some ones people might've missed. if you read them and like them give some love to the authors!!

I wanna assign a character to be Yugi's ex but I honestly cannot think of any ygo character that would have Nasty Breakups with Yugi?? Like

Puzzle's Breakup would be because Atem's Dead <\3

Wish and Peach... friendship bonds Too Strong that they would Stay Friends maybe Awkward at worst but they would Stay Together

With Honda- there would be much discussions before the break up and they would Solve it all nicely

With Ryou, they're too much on the Same Wavelength to even Argue. The Breakup would be so simple

Nasty breakups candidate can go to Yamiba... but honestly TKB would be in the Dead categgory also 😂

Maybe Otogi... but he's very much declaring "I can't hate Yugi" in canon... 😂😂

I don't include Kaiba because I don't want Kaiba to be the ex, I want him endgame

So sorry for the delay on this one! I kept having issues with my draft not saving and needing to start over.

I sincerely think Ryou was my first favorite character from Yugioh, even before Kaiba, if you can believe it.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

When I was first introduced to Yugioh, what struck me about him and made me latch onto him was the obvious emotional pain. At the time I was just starting to figure out my own depression and anxiety that my family was oblivious to, and I think I just related to that lack of support. I guess this is the answer for Question 25.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

How excited her gets about food, actually. He and Joey are probably almost equally enthusiastic about it, and it's adorable.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

How they changed his dad in DSOD. I preferred it when the dad was an oblivious nerd just trying to give his son a cool gift instead of being a power-hungry weirdo.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

This probably sounds silly, but I want him living his best life in a Pokemon game with a team that he's bonded to, getting to live an RPG adventure just like Monster World, but a little bit safer. I want him taking a nap leaning on his Altaria with an Absol curled up at his feet, looking like it's asleep but keep watching. And don't forget his floaty little Shuppets hovering about.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Friend of Foe by t.A.T.u. because I watched so many AMVs at the time that I was introduced to Yugioh. The song captures his poignant and desperate confusion with his own life and identity.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Honestly, aside from Question 1, nothing specific comes to mind aside from general nerdiness. I used to have a bad sweet tooth, like I imagine he does, but not so much anymore.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

Making him a sweet spooky boi with 27 tarot card decks at home that dresses like he's going to bible study. Also, a big one is giving him visible scars from all the stuff Y B has put him through: the arm, the left hand, the chest.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I wouldn't say despise. Not sure I'd say I dislike anything the fandom does with him too much

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

I imagine he's a night owl, so as long as he keeps things quiet at night, we wouldn't have a problem.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?

Definitely! We could probably introvert in the room together, doing our own things, or chat about art.

11. Would you date this character?

Again, I'm married, but if I had the chance and Y B was gone for good, absolutely.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

I've actually always headcanoned that Ryou had a Catholic mom and she tried to pass on her faith to him, but it didn't fully stick, necessarily. This isn't from nowhere, I swear. In the church scene in season five, in the English dub, Ryou goes into the church saying "I should be safe in here" after running from a disembodied voice. I think that means that he must have some small level of faith if he thinks the church itself will ward off the evil.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.

Galaxy Goth - Give him star earrings and glittery platform boots. Give him galaxy print leggings and an illusion neckline shirt with sheer/lacy sleeves. 👌👌👌👌👌✨✨✨✨✨✨ Hell, make it femboy too, he could rock that so hard. Make it pastel galaxy goth, it works just as well. Dress this boy up.

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

You know I can't ever just pick one ship. I'm a multishipper. It's never just one.

Euroshipping, Minorshipping, and Puffshipping are my top three.

Mumbleshipping, Rollshipping, and Teaseshipping are my top poly ships for him.

Honorable mention to Graceshipping, cause I think he and Ishizu could be so damn sweet together, and that's my #1 straight ship for him.

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

Tendershipping, actually. I don't hate on it or people who like it, and I have a soft spot for some of his ships, but I just can't see Yami Bakura the way a lot of the fandom sees him, and that's where it comes from. I don't wanna get into it because this isn't a Y B post. I'll just leave it at that. No hate here, just a different perspective.

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

Deathshipping. I can appreciate some of the art and some of the sillier conceptions of this ship, but I'm not personally into it.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

I haven't read the manga, but I've seen enough moments from it of Ryou and Joey together (included what looked like stealing a camel together), and their bond in DSOD was too adorable. It made me so happy to finally see somebody standing up for Ryou.

19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?

Obviously I wish he didn't get so roughed up by Y B.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

Normally I'd leave ship characters out of it, but I can't help it: Ishizu, Joey, and Duke are my top picks here.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

I play around with different versions of what's Ryou's mentality can be like after Bakura is gone and what the lasting impact is. There's a lot of options there, which is why I don't write just one version of Ryou.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?

There's a lot of things that people do with him. I love when people flesh out his relationship with his family and

Okay, gonna try to stick to canon personality with this.

From Touken Ranbu, Nikkari Aoe. He seems sweet and normal on the surface, and then he'll suddenly say the weirdest occult crap to you with the most normal smile and you just want to back away slowly. And then you realize, oh dear this man's a weirdo. An absolute weirdo. (He's the one that can see ghosts after all, there's a real connection over that.) (He gets two gifs because you need to understand what a weirdo he is.)

From UtaPri, we've got Shion from Heavens. He's a quiet shy boy on the surface with soulful eyes, but still waters run deep. I feel like they're both easy to underestimate.

And from Nanbaka, I can't really explain why, I always associated him with Seitarou Tanabata. Maybe because they share the spiky Christmas tree hair, idk. Maybe I just think they'd be good friends.

(GREAT prompt I haven't thought much about how they would interact before but this one was super fun!)

"This evening was very entertaining, Ryou. Thank you for arranging it."

Ryou looked up from the board game box where he had been arranging the pieces as the rest of the group was sprawled in various states of half-asleep daze across the couches and on pillows on the floor, a movie Ryou couldn't name playing quietly in the background. It was late - nearly two in the morning, Ryou observed as his gaze shifted to the clock.

He turned his attention back to Atem, somewhat surprised at his sudden declaration. "Oh... of course. It was nice to have everyone over."

Atem never talked to him much, and Ryou had been nervous - as he was about everyone, he was beginning to realize - that perhaps Atem did not like him. His regal air was intimidating, and despite boasting several inches on him, Ryou felt small in his presence. But here he stood, conversing with a friendly smile.

"I'm very happy that you and Yugi are together."

Ryou blinked at him. "Really?"

Atem nodded sincerely. "Yugi has always wanted to be closer to you, and I know it was difficult for him to see you be so distant over the years. He's been happier lately."

Ryou grimaced. At the time, of course, he'd thought nothing of how much he isolated himself - it was only now that he'd tried to connect with everyone again that he realized how he'd inadvertently hurt them by spending so much time pulling away. Not that they blamed him, of course - they'd been all too happy to welcome him back with open arms, and even Bakura with him - but a faint guilt nagged at him all the same.

"Well... I'm glad."

"Yugi and I have a strong bond, so it's important to me that he's with people who make him happy. I'm sure you understand - it's the same for you."

Ryou could not stop himself from laughing out loud at that. "Uh. I think it's a bit different for me and Bakura. He needed someone to teach him how to be a person, and that just happened to end up being me. And he's still... very much a work in progress."

Atem chuckled. "Well, I think we may be more alike than you realize. And by the way... Yugi mentioned you play Duel Monsters as well."

Ryou nodded. "Yes, that's right."

"Kaiba and I will be touring in tag-duel tournaments soon," Atem said, glancing back at where Kaiba had dozed off sitting bolt-upright in a chair. "Kaiba would never admit it, but we could use some practice against actual duelists, not just his simulations. Perhaps you and Yugi would like to help?"

Ryou nodded with a small smile. "Sure. I'll warn you though - I'm a lot better than Bakura, and I'll give you an even tougher time with Yugi on my side..."

Atem grinned enthusiastically. "Marvelous! You two will be just the sort of strong opponents we need to hone our skills."

good news yugioh mutuals i rewatched bonds beyond time with my brother this week and am now very much thinking about yugioh 👍 tell me smthn fun about it (if you’d like :]) i’ve never really been in its fandom

in toeis season 0 they made it so one of honda/tristans aspirations was to be a pilot which is so cute bc hes given like nothing in canon

in the digital world arc of anime duel monsters joeys like the one person who asks what his deckmasters abilities are while atem & tea just wait for some macguffin moment haha

in GX chazz princeton had this chant in the OG dub that was a fun play of words with his name "majoume jun" where jaden always refferred to him pretty informally so hed be like "san-da!" which sounds like the japanese word for thunder and when he went to another academy he did it with one of the students there but they thought he was saying majoume thunder so it became his fun little chant and the guys at 4kids decided to make it chazz it up in the dub which is endlessly funny to me. i know theres no good way to literally translate majoume thunder but certaintly there some other play on words they couldve done but i love chazz it up so

bakura ryou lovessss the occult and the deck yami bakura used in battle city is actually one ryou made! the deck freaks out joey

in the og manga duke devlins whole intro arc involved his clown dad who dresses as a clown 24/7 and his dad tries to burn down the building theyre all in its wild. in the anime they just play digeon dice monsters and are normal

For Duel Links’ DSOD Cup, our partner was Joey! Teams included Mokuba and Tea, and a new team of Ryou and Sera in her Plana form! Seeing him fanboy over her avatar is adorable! Finally, a new team of Kaiba and Yugi closed it.

Joey: Hey there! Are you my partna? Nice ta meet ya! I wanna win dis Tag Duel Tournament so bad dat I’m pullin’ out all da stops! My dream is ta be a professional Duelist! So I can’t go around losin’! Let’s win dis thing, partna!

Sera: ............... Bakura: Wooooow... Your avatar looks like it’s straight out of a comic book! It’s amazing! Who are you? Sera: Huh? Umm...I’m an unknown Duelist. Bakura: The Unknown Duelist!? Even your name is amazing! Sera: (Phew...He doesn’t know who I am...) (they lose) Bakura: Sorry! When it comes to Dueling, I’m still a beginner. Sera: ........ (It seems his dark side is no longer inside him...)

(the anon who sent the tarot reading and Peony Bliss request) woopsie! Sorry about that, I thought it was an "up to" 3 situation lol for my third option I'd love a tea reading! My favorite tea is honey camomile, my favorite animals are dogs, and I think I'm more of an in the present type of person just because I don't like to dwell on the past or worry about the future too much. "I would like a tarot card reading from you, madam Abella!"

Abella's eyes widen at the way you're addressing her. A smile blooms on her face and she gets ready to give you a tarot card reading. No one has ever addressed her in such a manner before.

"Why thank you. I am excited to do a reading for you. I see you're looking for romance."

She gestures to the stacked square shaped cushions you'll be seated at. While taking your seat she waves her hand and her items on the table disappear after the puff of pink smoke is gone. All that is left on the table is a stack of pink tarot cards. She shuffles them and in front of your very eyes they levitate around you two in a slow vortex.

"I'll need you to pick two cards."

You do as she says once the cards are lined up on the table in front of you. They're glowing pink. Once you've picked two cards she has you pick out another card but this time its different. The hearts on her face begin glowing. A rose shaped symbol is on the floor surrounding you two.

"For true love to be, we'll need to figure out who it will be. Do be sure to take careful attention to which card you choose. You'll know which one to choose, your heart will guide you."

You look over the cards hovering your hand over several, none felt right until you came across two cards. You decide to choose the one which made your heart feel warm inside. Abella thinks you did right by following your heart. The rest of the deck is shuffled in her hands and she places the stack beside her. One card is glowing pink while the other two look normal.

Abella hovers her hand over the glowing card, closing her eyes. Your brown eyes follow Abella's to the card. It's now glowing white. Abella waves her hand across it, causing it to spin. When she has her hand gently cupped over it, the card stops spinning. You look around as both of your locks of hair float gently in the air. Your auburn bangs are floating upwards while Abella's long dark curls are in the air. The card reveals a male with soft features and big brown eyes. His hair is snow white and his smile is very kind.

"This is Ryou Bakura.. he is a gentle compassionate soul. A gentlemen with a friendly demeanor. He is easy to talk to and very honest as well."

Abella's eyes are closed, she is focusing. She then opens her eyes with a smile.

"He admires games as much as you do and a huge fan of reading too. Not only do you two share similar hobbies but you two would also form a deep emotional bond. He's a romantic too so he'll enjoy your pursuit for it. The relationship would be besties turned friends."

You take in all her words with delight. Your brown eyes wander over to the image of Bakura again before Abella gets your attention on the next cards. She knows its a lot to take in. She flips over a card revealing an image of a regal woman seated on a luxurious chair holding a scepter. She wears a huge crown and is seated outside.

"The Empress. This card has a variety of meanings but in romance she symbolizes sensuality and a deep fulfilling connection between you and your true love."

She gives you a moment to take in the meaning behind the card. The fortune teller finds it romantic, she hopes you're looking forward to your next card. She flips over the next pink tarot card. It reveals a picture of a robbed individual wearing a triple crown with two keys at the feet, there is two monks facing the person at both sides.

"The Hierophant means a relationship that is effortless and easy, a relationship where you can relax. You two will share similar beliefs and values. Your partner and yourself are two equals who are best friends as well as romantic partners. You can't imagine life without them and vice versa."

You think the dynamic is sweet and nod in understanding of her words. Abella is happy for you, she expresses it with words of joy. She then asks what else you'd be interested in. You ask for a tea reading and her face lights up. She isn't often asked for tea readings. She waves her hand across the table and a puff of smoke appears again. When the cloud disappears you notice a white teapot with pink and red heart prints. The teacup and saucer are pink but the interior of the cup has various designs you're not familiar with.

"And what kind of tea would you prefer?"

"Chamomile would be nice."

"I agree its such a relaxing tea, especially on dates." She giggles preparing your tea. The container appears in front of her after the snap of a finger.

“I'd like for you to think of a question. One about romance or true love. It must be a clear and concise question. A romantic answer is what you seek if I'm not mistaken."

You're served your tea cup in front of you. Abella instructs you to contemplate your question while sipping your tea. The tea must be the perfect temperature while you do so. Abella made sure all goes accordingly to plan. The hearts on her face are glowing while her eyes are closed. You finally decide on a question. She is reflecting on her intentions and begins transferring her energy into the tea leaves before you drink.

"What would be my stance in a relationship? Loving or Besties perhaps?" You think to yourself as you're finishing up the chamomile tea.

You leave enough liquid in the cup for the reading. Abella gently picks up the teacup and saucer with the yellow liquid in it. She uses her left hand to swirl the tea left to right three times. Slowly the fortune teller carefully inverts the cup over the pink saucer. She closes her eyes for one minute, you notice the hearts on her face are glowing so it was intentional. Once she opens her eyes she rotates the cup three times again. She turns the cup upright, positioning the handle south.

She obverses remains of the tea leaves inside the cup. The aroma was very relaxing. She reveals an image of a dog at the top of the teacup. Abella looks happy for you, she nods her head in approval.

"This cute image means you're the top dog." She giggles. "You have the leadership role, can mean confidence, or having success in whatever it is you asked."

It was understandable why you're so happy with the result as it means your next relationship will be successful. You give Abella your thoughts before she asks you what else can she help you with. You point out the mini perfumes nearby. The fortune teller looks over to the shelf behind with a grin.

"You're interest in perfume? Which one interests you?"

You ask for the "peony bliss" perfume. Abella grabs a round golden colored bottle. The front has several floral designs and the lid looks like a round diamond.

"This perfume will have your true love asking for a dance with you if your feelings are requited."

"How does the perfume work?"

"All it requires is two sprays. Nothing more, nothing less."

You spray yourself with the perfume a couple times. It's a very lovely scent. It does smell of peony's but it also smells of lotus blossoms, fresh water, and sweet cream. It makes a wonderful combination. It reminds you of nostalgic feelings you experience when you're being silly around your friends.

"I like the scent." You say.

"I'm glad you do. It will be worth it for the results later, but do remember if it doesn't work out with Bakura you shouldn't be disheartened. Love can take time or sometimes it happens unexpectedly.”

Abella walks over to a spacious area by her table. She gestures you to follow. The hearts underneath her lashes are glowing neon pink again. On the ground a rose symbol appears and its glowing the same color as the hearts on Abella's face. You soon notice a white portal at the center.

"This will lead you to your true love. Remember all that I've told you. Best of luck."

You thank her before stepping into the white portal. It teleports you to the center of Domino city. It's late afternoon before sunset. Nothing out of the ordinary seems to be happening. You decide to wander the streets until you see a game shop nearby. You simply couldn't resist the temptation for some new table top games to play, perhaps you may also find some d&d figures too. Outside of the game shop you notice three men; a blonde, brunette, and a silver haired boy. Upon closer inspection you recognize one of them as Bakura. It was surprising to see him in person. You weren't sure if you'd actually get to meet him.

The boys are observing a poster outside the game shop for, "Monster World". A game similar to dungeons and dragons. They hope to buy the newest figures that will be released soon. Bakura's friends leave mentioning they promised their friend Anzu to help move furniture for her. Bakura is left behind admiring the poster. You also look at the poster causing him to make light chat with you.

"Good evening, you admire monster world as well?"

He has a very soft voice with a British accent. He is giving you a welcoming smile. His eyes look genuinely interested in what you have to say.

"I don't know too much but it does interest me. I love d&d and many tabletop games."

"Then you'll love monster world. It is very similar to d&d but the game is set up differently from d&d and there is quite a bit of rules."

Bakura continues to tell you about the game, how he has such a huge collection of figures and enjoys playing it with all of his friends. You two then get into a discussion about d&d and other games (especially duel monsters). It was nice finding out he also enjoys video games and books. Bakura was interested in hearing the games and books you enjoy reading. Turns out Bakura doesn't mind any genre for books as long as it isn't horror.

After the pleasant one hour conversation he offers a treat, hoping you'd be interested in the date with him. You gladly accept such a wonderful offer since he's been a gentlemen so far. At the shop you two went for your favorite treat he opened the door for you, was polite to the worker, and spoke so properly throughout the time you spent with him.

After enjoying your favorite treats together you two walked to the park together. Bakura is very friendly and has an overall kind demeanor which makes it so easy to befriend him. You two end up seated at a park bench chatting about sci-fi books. By then the sun went down and the park lights are on. Bakura gets an idea and grabs your hand leading you in front of the park fountain. He bows like a prince, holding out his hand to you.

"My lady." He said with a cute smile on his face.

He's secretly admiring your brown eyes, they remind him of a beautiful amber. You two slow dance together under the moonlight in a comforting silence. Bakura's brown eyes look like such a nice shade of chocolate they’re sparkling under the moonlight. They're loving and filled with admiration. Your own brown eyes return the loving look.

He smells your perfume and it makes his heart rate go up. The scent reminds him of weddings he's been to. How the flower girls throw petals over the walk way. It also reminds him of spring. He begins blushing at these thoughts but not as much as he is looking at your lovely features. Your auburn short hair really brought out your eyes, it swishes with your dancing. Bakura towered over you since he's tall but he admired how small your hands are compared to his, it reminded him of two love interests in romance novels he's read before.

When you're both done dancing he fixes some loose strands of your hair. He blushes as he realizes he wants to kiss you. It would be such a nice end to a wonderful date. He slowly leans in giving you time to reject him if he makes you uncomfortable. His eyes light up once he realizes you're leaning in as well. It was under the stunning moonlight you share a delightful kiss with Bakura.

Afterwards you two share some loving words and he offers to walk you back. You decide to have him walk you back to the center of downtown since you wish to visit Abella again before heading home for the night. After another promised date he kisses your hand before bidding you goodnight. Abella's tent isn't too far and you enter hoping she isn't busy.

You notice she is placing red boxes on some shelves, they're wooden. She looks pleased to see you and greets you. Your name leaves her lips with a big smile, she knows what day you must've had from the smile on your own face. You tell her a bit about the date at her table, seated on her stack of square shaped cushions again.

"I'm glad the date turned out so well between you and Bakura. You're sure to be set on a path for true love with a gentlemen such as Bakura. He has such a gentle heart, he'll treat you right. I'm sure of it."

Abella goes over to some planters across the room to pick you a present. From the planter she picks the perfect flower to present you. She turns around to offer you a blue lily.

"This is for you, friend. May you and Bakura find the happiness, confidence, and loyalty you both deserve. I can see that you’ll both be the best of friends as well as lovers.”

You thank her again and she hugs you before you leave. The blue lily symbolizes trust, loyalty, and spiritual awareness. Abella knew the romance you two share would be life long. The trust and loyalty symbolizing your relationship and the spiritual awareness representing Bakura for he is in tune with spirits due to his past. He would never fear the darkness again for he had your love to aid him in all his times of need.

Okay.

I’ve had time to think this over (I slept on it because working a night shift while emotionally overwhelmed is not great), and decided to put my thoughts down on all this in a much better way than my previous posts.

In December of 1999, the day I moved from the states to Germany, my dad got a magazine that talked about games, comics, cartoons, movies, things like that, and said my older sister and I would like it. Of course we would, it had Ash and Pikachu on the cover.

Well, inside was an article about a new series that would be coming to the states sometime in 2000-2001.

The image they used for this new anime was of two teenagers, one dressed in green, the other in shiny, blue and black leather. Blond hair, weird star-shaped hair, and they were holding cards.

This image is the cover of the fourth Duel Monsters era book, and was my very first introduction to YuGiOh.

And I fell in love instantly.

I wanted to know everything about this series, about who these two guys were, why they were playing card games, and what that ancient Egyptian puzzle one of them was wearing had to do with the plot.

When the show finally aired over on an American channel while I lived in Germany some time later, I was hooked. I wanted to watch the adventures of Yugi Mutou and his friends every week.

I remember being so upset when, during the Pegasus and Yami Yugi/Yugi duel, the channel stopped airing the episodes for the series and I had to wait a few months to see the end of season one.

I remember my dad got my sister and I our very first issue of Shonen Jump (it was the second volume) in 2003, by then I was already watching the show, collecting the cards, but seeing the manga changed something in me.

I saw more games, I saw how much of a little shit Yami Yugi was, how cool Yugi could be at times. Joey was a total badass, Kaiba was prepared to kill a man over a card game. Tristan and Tea had more personality to them, Mokuba was a gremlin, Ryou and Bakura felt more fleshed out.

Later on in that year, the worst year of my life, I was in the hospital for a month and my sister brought my ygo manga for me to read and it brought me joy.

I was in love and the manga and show greatly influenced me into drawing more than just Spongebob and Powerpuff Girls are as a little kid.

I wanted to draw cool action things, I wanted to draw monsters, I wanted to draw characters... well... kissing.

Because I ended up getting involved on the online fandom scene in 2005.

And everything changed from there.

I met people outside of my small group at school that liked the series. I could talk to them about the characters, not just the card game, the ships I grew to like, the cool stories and comics people created, the aus! I met people who became my friends, I met my first ever girlfriend in this fandom.

My art improved the more I drew these characters, I still have influences in my art from this series (mostly in how I draw clothing and certain hair and eye styles, but whatever). I cringe at my old art, but I’m happy to see how it improved the more I drew these characters.

I still had fanfics printed from the good old days of not having internet on a phone.

I still have fanart printed too, all in folders.

There’s a framed Joey on my desk right now, making The Face, that’s a bit of motivation for me.

I’ve cosplayed characters, I was the third best duelist in my high school, I had/have so much merch still. I’ve watched all of the series fpr DM, including the Capsule Monsters mini series (my favorite season), read all the manga. Hell, I nearly killed my computer watching season zero a while back, but it was worth it.

I’ve watched DM, and some of GX, in multiple languages because youtube used to let you do that, and I had German and Italian channels where I could watch the series that way.

I saw Bonds Beyond Time in theaters in a theater filled with people like me who grew up with the show, and we were all cheering and freaking out during the movie.

When DSOD came out, I was not in a great mind state, but that movie really helped me bring up my mood and started my second era on the internet as a ygo fan.

I made more friends here on tumblr with this account, so many people were/are interested in my aus and nonsense. I drew so much more fanart, you guys put up with my dumb crush on Timaeus and his thighs. So many of you were there for me when I went into the hospital again in 2018.

Hell, a lot of you were excited when I showed you guys my cartouche tattoo of the pharaoh’s name!

I’m not as active as I was when I was in college, but I’ve never stopped loving this series. I’ve been in love with this series since 1999, and I doubt I’ll ever stop.

Kazuki Takahashi left one of the biggest impacts on my life these past twenty-three years, and I am so thankful for that. I wish I could have met him, but I’m just happy that I was able to have some of the best fun I’ve ever had in a fandom because of his attempt at a horror/action manga centered around games.

“You should know the dead don’t always want to talk to you.”

Yugi looked stunned as he stared up at Ryou. “Don’t…want to talk…?”

”I mean—“ Ryou scrambled to recover, waving his hands in the air. “I can’t imagine he wouldn’t want to talk to you, but I need to warn you anyway. Just because you were close doesn’t mean we’ll be able to reach him.”

Yugi looked down, the words cutting through him like a knife. He knew Ryou didn’t intend it. But it was the past tense of it all that stabbed him in the chest. They used to be close. Weren’t anymore. Because he was no longer here.

”…I’m willing to chance that.”

Yugi knew he was a hypocrite for this. He’d told Kaiba to move on, that he wasn’t coming back. But Yugi still…missed him, too. Their bond, shattered now they were apart, ached inside him. Just because Yugi was trying to move on, trying to accept he wasn’t gone, didn’t mean he wasn’t desperate. Just one more conversation.

He needed to know they made the right choice, letting him go.

Ryou nodded at Yugi’s statement, though he still looked uncertain. When Yugi brought this up, Ryou hadn’t been sure it was a good idea. But he was willing to do it, for his friend. He trusted Yugi.

Sitting down on the floor, Ryou pulled something out from under the bed. A spirit board. He put it on his desk, which was pulled over next to his bed. He sat on the bed and gestured for Yugi to sit in the desk’s chair.

Swallowing, Yugi sat down across from Ryou. “So, what do we do?”

Ryou picked up something sitting on top of the board. “We’ll both put out hands on this. It’s a planchette. We ask the… We ask him questions. And then…we’ll see if he answers.”

”Okay.”

Picking up a lighter, Ryou reached over to light a candle on his nightstand. The lights were already low— it was late at night already. Noticing Yugi’s nervousness, he offered Yugi a smile.

Yugi smiled back.

The planchette was placed in the middle of the board, and both Ryou and Yugi put their hands into position.

”Is there anyone there?” Ryou asked.

The whole thing was starting to feel a little silly to Yugi now, but he gasped as the planchette started to move.

What's one thing you think the manga did better than the anime, and vice versa?

So I love both equally. I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses (i.e. I wish we had more of the fun game of the week fillery things in the anime but also there were some in there that I didn't vibe with, etc)

I truly love what they did to introduce Bakura in the manga vs the anime. Like I still get excited when my friends get to that episode when they start out, bc that's my favorite character, that's the gremlin that stole my heart when I was four and I never looked back.

However, the manga gives a really good set up of Ryous struggle with his ring and the introduction of Bakura with the TTRPG. Not only does it perfectly set up for the end of the series, but it does also really weave well into Bakuras character; he's the DM, he's the one narrating this story because he's the only one that remembers what fucking happened, and he's schemey. He's like the perfect DM in all honesty I would kill for him to be my DM I think it'd be interesting at the very least. I'd probably get turned into a doll but yknow.

Doing it as the card game, I get where they were coming from, but it was also a bit abrupt and we didn't get to see any of Ryous personality leading into that episode (he's just kinda there wandering around in the shadows) and I think it leans better towards the Mangas strength. And also the manga cares just slightly more about Ryou than the anime does unfortunately.

Also this isn't like. A manga vs anime thing but I need to say it

WHILE ITS STILL KIND OF GOOFY I LIKE THIS BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL ZORC WE GOT IN THE END.

This looks like a God of death. Just give Jim a different outfit, make him huge, and honestly give him the final result Zorcs face and we'd be in business. I hate Zorcs design so goddamn much 😂.

The anime, however, I feel like what it does better is some of the Filler Arc. I think the Virtual World Filler Arc is still really good and fleshes out more of Kaibas backstory and the deal with the Big 5 (and God knows I hate them but I'm glad we know more about them, since they're faceless and nameless in the manga and like. They did try to overthrow the company and also kill Kaiba PRETTY SURE THEY'RE A LITTLE IMPORTANT) and it gave Seto a chance to face off against Gozaburo and watch that fucker burn in a fiery explosion and be sent off to hell once and for all. I think we needed that for his character and for his own healing. Also it gave us a really sweet bonding experience for Seto and Mokuba and I needed that. And I love the idea of Noa and his character as well.

We all know also that I think Season 4 is better than YuGiOh R by a fucking landslide. I love season 4. I love the biker boys with my whole whole heart and how they act as perfect mirrors to our main trio and I love that they did their research on Atlantis and it actually fits really well into the already existing Canon into YuGiOh.

The Grand Prix is an exception bc I think it could have been handled a lot better and there's definitely changes to it in my fic. But also I do also love Capsule Monsters bc sure why not fight Alexander the Great why the fuck not.
