I can’t help being bitter at Mu Qing in book 4 because like ughhhh. Not only did it crush Xie Lian’s faith in lasting friendships but even if there were other reasons it has to come across to Xie Lian that Mu Qing only stuck around because of Xie Lian’s wealth and now that he has nothing Mu Qing has no reason to be friends with him anymore. Like that has to cross your mind in that situation which makes it worse. I will always understand Hua Cheng’s disdain for Mu Qing even if it is petty lmao (I do like Mu Qing as a character overall but yeah I got some feelings)

Well the thing about most people’s negative reactions to Mu Qing in the general story but also specifically in book 4 is that you’re supposed to not be on his side. Everything he says and does is in the most terrible, contradictory way possible because he’s trying to cover his own petty jealousies by lying to himself that they’re actually reasonable and justified. Book 4 is supposed to be the moment where you really see him for what he is, and book 5 is the moment where he really sees himself for what he is. So it’s easier to be kinder to him compared to other mxtx antagonists because at least he becomes self-aware, accepts his wrongs, and changes to try to be better towards the person he continually fucked over.

The only minor disagreement I have with your ask, though, is that Hua Cheng’s disdain for Mu Qing is in no way petty and is 100% justified. Leaving out the fact of how Mu Qing and Feng Xin treated him like a plague rat when he was a child, he still treats Feng Xin marginally better than Mu Qing, such as not repeatedly decking Feng Xin in the face like he does to Mu Qing in the cave. Why? Mu Qing is likely directly responsible for Hong’er’s death, because he went behind Xie Lian’s back out of petty spite to kick Hong’er out of the military and then said it was on Xie Lian’s orders because he’s too chickenshit to own up to his own evilness. And all this because Xie Lian said Hong’er was good with sabers “like Mu Qing” and should therefore be promoted… So Hong’er ends up back on the streets before dying a lowly foot soldier on an unnamed battlefield after the fall of Xianle. Hua Cheng has every right to hate Mu Qing forever just based on that.
