The Fatui Harbingers. Most feared across Tevyat, loyal puppets of the Tsaritsa, people who have dedicated their entire life to their God. Well, all except for one.

Scaramouche was only in it for the Electro Archon’s gnosis. That was the sole reason he joined the Fatui. He wanted the Gnosis, no, he needed it. Scaramouche, who had shut off his inner, real self from the rest of the world, Scaramouche, who had serious anger issues, Scaramouche, who believed he was the boss. Any sane person would take one look at him and run in the opposite direction if they could. His own subordinates were terrified of him. 

‘So were you not sane then?’ he often wondered. Why did you look at him with that gentle understanding etched on your face? Why did you not run away the moment you saw him? Why did you continue to stick by his side? 

You were Scaramouche’s personal secretary, his assistant. Young, but you had climbed up the ladder pretty quickly. You were reliable, didn’t seem fazed by his anger or outbursts, that’s why he’d picked you. You were the one who had been assigned to help him out in any way whatsoever to achieve his mission- obtain the electro archon’s gnosis. 

So why did you manage to find a way to break open the walls that he had built around his nonexistent heart? Why did you confess to him softly that one moonlit, snowy night, after you had helped him calm down from a nightmare? 

“I love you, Scaramouche.” You had said with a smile. He remembered it vividly. He remembered the feeling he had felt. As if… something inside him was picking up its pace, beating. He remembered how the words had come out of his mouth naturally, his returned love. He remembered the soft kiss you’d placed on his cheek. He remembered it all much too well for his own liking. 

He remembered the promise you had made him. That you’d never leave him alone. That you would love him forever.

He remembered how, when in Inazuma helping him out on what would turn out to be his last mission in the Fatui, you’d fallen victim to the Tatarigami. He remembered how you got sicker day by day. How you always told him to complete his mission, to put his life’s goals before you. He remembered the desperation he felt. The desperation to save you. He had fallen too deep, too deep into your love, and he couldn’t get out.

He had never wanted to lose you. He had never wanted to acknowledge the fact that you are a mortal. He had never wanted to acknowledge the fact that someday, you too, would die, like any other mortal.

He was despairing in his anguish. You kept getting weaker, day by day. He insisted that you rest, try to recover, but you still followed him, making sure that his timetables were made, his activities planned to some extent, his subordinates kept in line. You kept doing your duty till you were rendered immobile, and he hated it. 

He hated the sight of you growing paler and weaker. He had found you a nice but abandoned home on the beach, and he hated leaving you alone in it. He always came back as fast as possible. He always made sure to tell you how much closer he was getting to the gnosis.

He was planning to use the Gnosis to heal you. Maybe even reverse your mortality. Because he didn’t want to see you go, didn’t want to see you leave him. Call it selfish; he didn’t care. 

One particular fated evening, he had stayed by your bedside the entire day, gripping your weak hands, making you anything that made you feel better. Yes, this was the famed Scaramouche, distraught over a weak, ill and dying mortal.

You hadn’t been like this. You were always strong and healthy, he’d never seen you sick in all the years he’d been with you. And that’s why, in his delusions, he still believed that he could save you. That he could bring you back to that joyful, strong self of yours.

It was that particular evening that he’d been summoned to the Delusions factory outlet on account of the Traveler’s furious rampage. He was completely unwilling to leave you, but you weakly, softly persuaded him that this was important, this was the chance he’d been waiting for. He had no choice but to go.

He stared at the small, glowing, purple object in his hands.

This was it. This was what he had waited for his entire life. The Electro Gnosis.

He had finally obtained it.

He could finally return to you and use it to heal you.

But alas….

When he returned to their small home, it was dead silent. Not a single bird chirped or hummed. Even the wind seemed to have died down. The air hung heavy. 

Something thumping furiously and nervously inside him, he ran into the house, straight to your bedside. And he was terribly alarmed by how much worse your condition looked. 

You had trouble keeping your eyes open. When they finally focused on him running towards you, the Gnosis clutched in his hand, a small smile made its way onto your face. “You did it. I’m so proud of you.” You whispered. 

You were proud of him, he realised.

“The moon is beautiful tonight, Scaramouche. Take care of yourself for me.” You had trouble speaking.

“Wait, don’t say stuff like that. I can heal you now. We’re almost there. Just hang on for a bit…” Scaramouche had said frantically. Now that he had the gnosis, he had no idea how to use it. 

“I’ll always love you, Scara, in life or in death.” You said softly.

Your eyes fluttered close.

His devastated, anguished scream, laced with pure sorrow and disbelief, tore through the cottage, through the still midnight air. 

No matter what he tried, you never moved again. 

The Gnosis clattered to the ground, the feared Sixth of the Fatui Harbingers falling to his knees.

You, too, had left him. This was inevitable. But you left early, much too early. There was so much he had still planned to do with you. But you’d just left him, just like that. 

He stared at your unmoving form, at the worthless object lying on the floor. 

He felt so hollow.

His life’s mission, its purpose was over. And yet again, he had failed to protect the one he loved.

Tears trickled down his face in a steady flow as he held your hands, which were losing their comforting warmth. “But… you promised, [Y/N].” He whispered, distraught. “You promised….”

You accompany your friend who tells you she's joining because she "needs to hit stuff". You go for your friend, but you stay for the instructor. God. He's so NICE. And so caring. And holds the punching bag while instructing you how to hold your fists for contact. And JESUS, when he wraps your hands up with the tape you feel like you're about to explode.

He teaches you on one hand, "over the thumb twice, and then between the middle and ring, and then back to....." you're not even paying ATTENTION, you dummy!! And he KNOWS this is the case, because when he asks you to wrap your left hand yourself and alll he gets is a,

"huh?' from you.

He smiles so big and takes the tape back from your right hand and teaches you allllll over again. And you STILL don't absorb it. You're that far gone. You'll have to look up fist-wrapping videos tonight online if you want to save face for the next session.

Even when your girlfriend is done with the lessons entirely, you continue to go. You get your own membership with him, and you're there at least 6 times a week.

One evening it's just the two of you in the intermediate boxing class. He's got on the sparring gloves and he's teaching you how to throw a hook and a jab, wanting to get each hand as proficient as the other.

Ayla Aescar - Twinsies! No, seriously, they look very similar, though Blythe finds it much more amusing than Ayla. Blythe tends to be more relaxed than Ayla, especially in social settings, but they tend to balance each other because of this. Despite their difference in demeanor, the two of them find solace in hanging out without having to do anything. They are the friends who could sit in silence and be content with the arrangement; Blythe does one thing while Ayla does another. It works, not to mention the trust they build because of it.

Red Antiqua - “Woman Runs into Ex-Boyfriend After 10 Years and Now They Are Nerdy Best Friends with Stories to Tell”. He rambles and she is reacting like an extra on a sitcom. Does bring up embarrassing stuff that she remembers from the time they dated just to watch Red flounder. Pan and her then share a high five while Neon attempts to hide a laugh. Nevertheless, her attraction goes from simple to complex very fast, the more complex emotions having begun during their visit to the Circle. She initially thought he was, for lack of better terms, hot and good with words, which is just her type. Now he is so much more, from his subtle jealousy over her and her ex reconnecting to the way his eyes light up when she stops banting and starts being genuine with him. As much as she loves getting reactions from him through playful, flirty banter, she starts naturally wanting to be genuine, and that is unexpected on her part. Blythe is one to “leave before you get left” but she already knows she can’t do that here and it legitimately scares her how strongly she cares for Chase.

I don’t usually give my thoughts on games themselves--if I do, it’s typically in regards to story and worldbuilding rather than gameplay--but there was so much to unpack with this that I feel like I want to cover some points. To start out, I’d like to cover progression.  I played with my lvl. 36 character, like I’m sure many of you have/will, and while I can’t speak for anyone playing this and receiving these missions on lower levels--when they’ll be getting other missions and the Nanos they need to level up at possibly the same time--as a result, I felt that the new World Nano missions we were given flowed really nicely.  One thing that is both a gift and a curse with FusionFall is that, while it has vast areas to explore, rather than level up following a singular route like some games, you can do a bit of running around if you don’t stack your missions properly.  Luckily, this doesn’t feel tedious simply because there is so much to explore and thanks to the quick travel system. However, for more experienced players who have already run through everything, I could see this being a little stale.  The newer missions ran a pretty set path within a mostly singular route, so you could run from destination to destination rather than hopping from the different areas in the game.  If they add updates with a similar scale, I hope they continue with this trend. 

There were two new locations to explore in the game: Harada-Bridges Records and a digital world.  Both are amazing!!  I’m a sucker for this kind of worldbuilding anyway--I’ve made a huge list of products, stores, etc. in FusionFall and the Cartoon Networks shows just so I can pull them in to my stories rather than use generic stuff--but this took the cake. The team didn’t need to go this far, but they did.  And I love them for it. The record studio had posters for bands and refs to some of the cartoons, it added more to the lore with the Gangreen gang and fleshed them out a bit, and they just looked awesome.  I mean, look at this: The first words out of my mouth on seeing the digital world were literally, “Oh Mama!”

It’s not anything super complicated, but it has this awesome, almost Tron-like aesthetic that’s  just beautiful.  The glowing walls with shifting colors was a great touch and the enemies fit perfectly into this.

Speaking of enemies, let’s get to them and the new combat introduced. 99% of the time, unless it’s for an event, I play solo. (It’s just what I’ve always done.) And at this point, I’ve gotten pretty good handling the controls for the game if I do say so myself.  Not that they’re overly complicated: Once you remember the buttons and what you need to look out for, you’re pretty golden.  

Some of the combat introduced actually surprised me.

The enemies themselves weren’t anything too original, a lot of them we’ve seen before, but some of their abilities will catch you off guard if you’re unprepared.  There’s a fusion monster that splits into two upon death that you have to beat, and then you later have to fight three Fusions at once, some of your Nanos abilities do nothing, and they’re constantly blasting away at you.  I died once to the 3 Fusions, but handled myself pretty well: It did, however, force me to rethink my strategy in a way I never had before, which was refreshing.  I couldn’t even attempt to take on one Fusion at a time in the group by luring one away because all of them reacted, so I ended up having to run around constantly as I was attacking in order to avoid getting bombed by fusion blasts. I like this experiment, as it breaks the old formula and gives the average player a new challenge without becoming frustrating.  I hope the team continues this!

One thing that is frustrating though, and it’s been a problem since before the update, has to do with the fusion matter in Fuse’s Lair. Keep in mind, while I’m fighting three teams of three Fusions one right after the other, I only see one Revive ‘Em all the way at the start on the map, which is huge. (I got a bit frustrated back when I had to battle Fuse because the Revive ‘Em for that was pretty far too, so I constantly kept having to run back to Fuse through a course of fusion monsters and ziplines even though the game was saving my progress during the fight.)  I get that it’s always been a thing when you tackle a boss and it’s a reasonable penalty for the most part, but when you have to go through such a massive location it gets a little ridiculous just to have one.  Especially due to the fusion matter present in the Lair.  Story-wise, it makes perfect sense: You’re in the belly of the beast, so to speak, and in most likely the location with the highest concentration of pure fusion matter on Earth.  However, where this fails in terms of gameplay is that, not only can you step in it and have no idea because everything looks the same, it’s right in the middle of walkways you’re forced to go through or in small patches you accidently step on because again you can’ t see it like in the rest of the game.  It’s a good thing I kept my Grim Tokens for a rainy day, because one tini-tiny patch literally killed me immediately after battling the last trio of Fusions despite the fact that there was no indicator I was standing in it during the fight.  It makes it hard to even find somewhere to stand to recover as you’re going through, and it’s one thing I do hope they fix even if I never have to go back to the Lair myself.

Getting to some of the story/worldbuilding stuff, again, I do love where they’re taking the game.  You can tell these guys aren’t just trying to make random missions for funsies; They’re taking plot development seriously, trying to connect various dots and add a whole new chapter for us to explore.  Of course, you know I already love it, but also, not gonna lie...

I’m happy that it looks like I was right on the hivemind and symbiotic nature of Fuse with Planet Fusion theories. :)

As for the Belladonna/Buttercup one, I figured I probably wouldn't be right about it back then and, sure enough, the memory-loss idea was kept.  The fact that the team actually brought more to such a minor thing in the game overall pleasantly surprised me though.  While I can’t say I like the take due to the plot holes remaining, it’s not something I pin on the team as it was present in the first version of the game and even one of the devs commented on it being a little off and them needing to change some of the dialogue around it in a YouTube vid. There’s only one negative that I have to say about it and that’s an additional plot hole that was made by introducing “Belladonna” with her own separate Fusion and Nano. If she and Buttercup are one and the same, then it doesn’t really make sense that there’d be another one of her.  Memory loss or no, Buttercup’s still Buttercup and from the information we’ve been given on the creation of Fusions, her Fusion wouldn’t change just because of the amnesia unless maybe they’re going for a split personality route, but even that seems a little weak--especially since we’re shown during the mission that Buttercup maintains fragments of her memories and then she remembers her true identity pretty fast.  I think they’re working with it the best they can without tearing away from the original material though, which I really respect.  I hope we get to see where Buttercup is going in the future now that they’re doing more with her character and giving her a chance to shine.  That mission in particular felt like reading the chapter of a good comic, where you’re snapping at the bit waiting for the next issue to be published.

However, as for my personal stories, I’ll probably still be keeping to the Belladonna/Buttercup ideas that I had before and I’ll still leave the theory up for the sake of that theory, even though it was wrong.  There are some things I’d like to play with for stories.

Well, Fusion Fellas, looks like we’ve got a lot to look forward too and a whole new world to explore!

Mao Mao: Heroes of... Holomyr? (MaoMaoctober day 20: Game)

In this fic, King Snugglemagne summons Mao Mao, Badgerclops, and Adorabat to guard and entertain him on a rainy day. What better way to pass the time than to play a little Dungeons & Dragons together?

Snugglemagne, Mao Mao, and Adorabat play. Badgerclops DMs. Mao Mao learns to let himself have fun and be vulnerable through roleplaying.

This is day 20 of my daily fics for the MaoMaoctober prompts! As with all other days, it’s totally independent of the previous ones and can be enjoyed on its own! I’m proud of this one, and it’s full fic length (3.2k words), so I thought I’d post it here like a standalone. Thanks to my boyfriend @htodinth for his help with scene and dialogue ideas, as well as editing.

The rain pounded on the intricate stained glass windows of King Snugglemagne’s palace, slipping down the colored panes in thick rivulets. The king had sent most of his retinue home before the rain began, leaving the large estate almost entirely empty. He’d even sent his guard detachment away. But that was fine; he had the utmost confidence in their temporary replacements.

“So you see,” King Snugglemagne said, posing dramatically in his throne, “with this horrible rain I simply cannot entertain myself! There can be no croquet, no outdoor galas, and no hastily-produced reality TV shows! And since the rest of my court has been sent home, and you’re here to act as my guards…” He gestured with a flourish. “...that duty falls to you three!”

Mao Mao’s eye twitched. “So you called us here… in the middle of a massive rainstorm… to be your jesters?!” He took a step towards the king, who immediately began to cower.

Badgerclops grabbed him by the neck of his cape and pulled him back. “Chill out, man! We just have to entertain ourselves and include the king, that’s all.”

“Yes! Quite right!” Snugglemagne agreed nervously.

Mao Mao groaned. “With all due respect your highness, this is a waste of our time!”

“Excuse us for just a moment, King Snugglemagne.” Badgerclops walked towards a side chamber, dragging Mao Mao with him. “Adorabat! Keep an eye on the king for us!”

“Roger!” She sounded excited.

“Dude, what’s your problem?”

“This is ridiculous, Badgerclops! I’m a legendary hero! Not a babysitter!”

“C’mon man, just suck it up and help out! It’s one night! And besides, it’s your sheriff-ly duty to obey the king or whatever.”

Mao Mao crossed his arms. “Ugh, fine! But I’m not going to enjoy it!”

An idea came to Badgerclops. A really good idea. This might be the moment to do something he’d wanted to try with Mao Mao for ages. “Hey Mao Mao… what if you could go on a really cool adventure, keep the king safe, and entertain him all at the same time?”

Mao Mao looked intrigued.

“I’ve got a great idea. Just trust me.”

They returned to the throne room to find Adorabat finishing up a magic trick. The king gasped with delight and clapped as she produced a bouquet of roses from thin air. She threw it to him and took a bow.

“Okay y’all,” Badgerclops said, “I’ve got a game for us to play. Have any of you ever played Dungeons & Dragons before?”

Mao Mao stared at him blankly.

“I have a dungeon!” the king offered, confused.

Adorabat had stars in her eyes. “Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh YES!!! I LOVE that game!”

Badgerclops was surprised. “It’s… a lot of rules for someone your age, Adorabat. Who have you played with?”

“Well…” She looked embarrassed. “I might have… snuck out to play it with the sky pirates…”

“You WHAT?!” Mao Mao yelled, turning to her.

“I’m sorry! They’re just so good at imagining things! Even their food is imaginary!”

“Adorabat, we’ll talk about this later. Mao, run to the aerocycle and grab my bag, okay?”

Mao Mao nodded and strode away.

“I’m terribly sorry, Sheriff Badgerclops, but what exactly is… happening?”

“Oh, nothing major, I’m just saving the day. This game will keep you entertained for hours, dude. It’s kinda like… you, Mao Mao, and Adorabat will make up your own characters with cool moves and stuff, and then I’ll narrate an adventure for you! You get to make choices about where you want to go and what you want to do, and I use some dice to help decide how it all goes.”

The king seemed uncertain.

“You get to come up with an outfit for your character~” Badgerclops said enticingly.

Snugglemagne leapt out of his throne. “Oh! Oh! Let’s begin at once!”

A few minutes later they were gathered around a table. Badgerclops had printed off several blank character sheets from his arm. Mao Mao, Snugglemagne, and Adorabat were poring over the race and class selections. A platter of tiny bite-sized pizzas sat on the table between them.

“I say, this bard seems like a saucy fellow!” King Snugglemagne announced, raising the class guide for everyone to see.

“Ooh, excellent choice!” Badgerclops said. “What’s your instrument?”

“Keytar.” He replied without even a moment of hesitation.

“Atypical, but I like it!” Badgerclops jotted down some information on Snugglemagne’s character sheet and then handed it back to him. “Now you have to pick out a race.”

“I shall play the fighter,” Mao Mao announced, indicating a sheet of paper.

“Shocking,” Badgerclops said sarcastically. “Hand me your character sheet, and pick some moves.” He filled in the appropriate fields on Mao Mao’s sheet.

“Um, Badgerclops?” Adorabat said.

“Yeah dude?”

She motioned for him to lean down, then whispered into her ear. He looked surprised, then nodded. “You got it.” Another sheet printed from his arm.

“I’m playing a homebrew alchemist class!” Adorabat announced. “We’re gonna BLOW SOME STUFF UP!”

They continued setting up their characters, taking moves and choosing proficiencies. Badgerclops looked up at them brightly once everyone had finished. “Okay, why don’t we introduce our characters? Adorabat, would you mind starting?”

“Okay!” She straightened up her papers and cleared her throat. “I am Rirkarg Shrapnel, the gnoll alchemist! Once I was a maker of medicine for my people, but an evil duke and his army razed my homeland and killed all my friends! So I turned my skills to destruction, and seek to destroy him!”

Badgerclops nodded approvingly. “What’s the duke’s name?”

“Um,” Adorabat rubbed the back of her head, “I couldn’t come up with one.”

“Let’s just call him something generic for now, then. Duke… free… water. Duke Freewater.” He took down a note. “Mao Mao?”

“Can you…” Mao Mao looked embarrassed. “Can you come back to me later?”

“Okay, sure. Just let me know if you need any help, okay?”

“I don’t need help playing an imaginary game!!” He snapped.

“Right, okay, I got it. Jeez, dude. Snugglemagne?”

“Yes, very well.” Snugglemagne put on a smooth voice. “Yes, hello my adoring fans! I am the one, the only Gilwyn Goldheart! The most handsome elf in all of…” He turned to Badgerclops. “What are we calling this place?”

“The whole world is Holomyr, but we’re focusing on the Green Reef Coast.”

Snugglemagne nodded. “The most handsome elf in all of Holomyr! Or at least… I was.” He placed the back of his hand to his head, dramatically. “You see, a horrible curse has befallen me, and cracked my beautiful face like a porcelain mask! I have nothing but my music now! So I wander the world in search of a way to undo this dreadful affliction!”

“That is SO COOL!” Adorabat said.

Snugglemagne looked bashful. “Oh, my! Thank you! I thought your character was excellent as well!” He beamed.

“Alright Mao Mao, whatcha got?”

Mao Mao shifted nervously in his seat. “Um, hello, everyone, I’m… Mercutio. I’m a human fighter.”

When Mao Mao didn’t continue, Badgerclops stepped in. “Mercutio, that’s a good name! Does he have a surname?”

“I, uh… It was…” Mao Mao fumbled for an answer. Coming up with one name had been hard enough. “Umm…”

“It’s a mysterious secret,” Adorabat chimed in, “that only his absolute closest companions may learn.”

“Yeah! It’s that!” Mao Mao looked relieved.

“I love it! Good job, Mao Mao.”

For a moment, Mao Mao’s eyes filled with excitement.

“Any backstory you want to share?”

Mao Mao nodded. “I was a… my village…” His face reddened as he stumbled over the words.

“Hey,” Badgerclops whispered to him, “you can talk about your character in third person if it’s easier.”

Some of the tension eased out of Mao Mao’s pose. He looked a bit more confident. “Mercutio showed promise as a hero early on, and there was lots of talk around his village about all the good he could do if he were trained properly. But the village didn’t have much, and going off to any sort of hero school seemed like an impossible dream to him. But after his years growing up there, helping everyone and being a hero at home, he earned their love and respect. So the people pooled their resources to send him to a heroic academy far across the continent. Now he patrols the world trying to make a name for himself and raise his village to prominence in return for their charity!” Mao Mao realized he had begun gesturing and gently folded his hands back in his lap, embarrassed.

“A world traveler! That’s fantastic, Mao Mao!” Badgerclops said.

“Oh yes,” King Snugglemagne agreed, “I simply love a village prodigy story!”

Mao Mao rubbed the back of his head, looking away. “Thanks…”

They worked out some details of how their relationships to each other and how they’d met. Gilwyn had hired Rirkarg to find a treatment that could fix his face, and the two of them had struck up an unlikely rapport even though Rirkarg failed to help him. Mercutio had come across the pair when he hitched a ride on a caravan of traveling merchants and found Gilwyn entertaining the salespeople with his songs in exchange for their transport.

Satisfied with their characters, Badgerclops stood up and dimmed the lights a little. “Okay,” he said, sitting back in his chair, “let me set the scene.”

“The three of you are sitting at an outdoor table in a busy park in one of the Green Reef Coast’s largest cities, Ymera. Mercutio tracked a lead to an informant with info on Duke Freewater. You intend to meet her here. Since you’re meeting under broad daylight, you’re hoping that the anonymity of the city will prevent any prying eyes; the crowds should be enough to leave you in total peace.”

“Rirkarg, you spot the informant first. She is a tall, strong Dragonborn with green scales and large black horns jutting back from her head. She approaches the table and sits down inconspicuously, as though she’s a part of your group. ‘Greetings, Mercutio.’ she says.”

Mao Mao considered. “I want to check her for weapons, but we’re trying not to draw attention…”

“You can roll a perception check to see if you spotted anything on her as she was sitting down, or sleight of hand to attempt to feel around for weapons without her noticing.”

“Well, my sleight of hand check would be better, wouldn’t it?”

Badgerclops glanced at his stats. “Yes, it is.”

“Now, sheriff,” King Snugglemagne chimed in, “you would be groping an informant under the table, which is most unbecoming of a hero. Plus, she looks like she could kick your ass.”

Mao Mao blushed. Adorabat giggled. “Okay, okay. Perception, then. Which one do I roll?”

“This one,” Badgerclops said, handing him a twenty-sided die. “It’s always the d20 for checks.”

Mao Mao turned the die over in his hand a few times, then rolled it across the table. It slid to a stop with a six facing upwards. “Six plus one gives me seven.”

Badgerclops shrugged. “You’ve got no idea if she’s packing or not. Nothing looks amiss.”

“Stupid dice,” Mao Mao grumbled.

“Please, Madam,” Snugglemagne said in his smooth character voice, “allow me to introduce myself. I am-”

“Oh my god, you’re Gilwyn Goldheart!” 

King Sugglemagne tugged at his collar, evidently already in character. “Well, it’s always nice to meet a fan, but could you perhaps keep it down? This meeting is supposed to be… clandestine. Cloak-and-dagger-ish.”

“She shakes her head, embarrassed. ‘Sorry, I just got a little excited. Let’s just get to the point. You’re looking for intel on Duke Freewater?’”

“Rirkarg nods. ‘He destroyed my home. I will have my revenge.’”

“‘Well, rumor has it that in a week, he’s launching a massive warship from Port Rejtal. They’re going to blow a hole straight through the Green Reef and open up a passage to the sea. It’ll increase his naval power tenfold, and the damage to the reef will be unrecoverable.’ You guys know that Rejtal is about five days’ travel south of where you are, so you need to get there quickly if you want to make it before the warship launches.”

“Rirkarg’s nostrils flare. They look determined. Also angry. ‘Freewater. He will be on this ship?’”

“The informant isn’t certain. She says she’s heard conflicting reports.”

“Is the Green Reef well known?” Mao Mao asked Badgerclops.

“Oh yeah, this entire coast is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’d be a huge deal if it was destroyed, even partially.”

Mao Mao’s eyes sparked. “Mercutio slams his fist on the table. ‘If we save the reef from destruction, we’ll be renowned the world over!’”

“Rirkarg agrees. ‘And Duke Freewater must not gain any more military power than he already has.’”

“So, we’re taking a road trip to Rejtal?” Snugglemagne asked in his Gilwyn voice.

“Yeah!!” Adorabat yelled, out of character. “Road trip!” They laughed, and after a moment, Mao Mao joined in.

The next few hours of the game unfolded without a hitch. Every time Mao Mao acted in character, Badgerclops would encourage and praise him. Mao Mao grew invested in the game, talking in character and building out his story. He carried out an excellent philosophical discussion with Gilwyn about fame, Gilwyn having lost his and Mercutio seeking to grow his own. He came up with unexpected, exciting strategies in battle. He took a few failed rolls a little too personally, but Badgerclops decided that was a good sign. Mao Mao was empathizing with his character, and poking at the edges of some of his insecurities through Mercutio. Badgerclops had hoped that Mao Mao would react like this. Roleplaying might be good for him.

It felt like no time at all had passed before they came to the climactic scene. The party was split, with Gilwyn and Rirkarg fighting to place a bomb down in the hold while Mercutio faced the ship’s captain, alone. The boat had pulled out of the dock but was not yet at the reef. Duke Freewater was nowhere to be found, much to Rirkarg’s chagrin. Adorabat had cursed up a storm when they failed to find him, which Badgerclops reprimanded her for even though it was technically in character. He’d have to speak to Orangusnake later about his language at the table.

“Okay, Rirkarg, Gilwyn is holding off the guards. You have a moment to act. What do you do?”

Adorabat stood up on her chair. “I plant the bomb I made earlier right against the hull, then cover it up with some boxes so nobody will see it! This thing’s going down!”

“Roll sleight of hand.”

“Sixteen plus three! Nineteen!”

“You plant the bomb and hide it perfectly. Nobody is going to find it.”

“Good show!” Snugglemagne exclaimed. They high fived.

“Let’s jump back to Mercutio. Mercutio, you have the captain backed against the railing of the ship. He grins at you as he brandishes his cutlass. ‘You were a fool to come here, Mercutio, and a bigger fool for fighting me alone! You want to be a hero, hm? Then it’s too bad you’ll die here, weak and alone.’ You hear someone running up behind you, and before you can turn around…”

Badgerclops rolled a die. His eye shot open. “He MISSES?!”

The players cheered. “The whole ship rocks as an explosive rings out from the lower hull. You see the captain’s chief naval officer stumble past you, his sword narrowly missing your arm. He was thrown off by the blast. And because he missed, it is now your turn.”

“Come on Mao Mao, get him!” Adorabat called.

“Yes, sheriff! Destroy those men!”

“What was that about being alone, Captain Ulrich?!” Mao Mao roared, laughing as he hopped up onto his chair. “I’m stronger than you’ll ever be! And I have my friends to help me be even better!” Mao Mao grabbed a twenty-sided die from the table. “And then I stab my sword into the chief officer!”

“Roll to attack!”

Mao Mao released the die. It rolled to a stop. He leaned over the table to look at it.

“NATURAL TWENTY!!” He roared.

Adorabat screamed. Snugglemagne whistled and clapped.

“Alright Mercutio,” Badgerclops said, “describe it.”

“I switch to a dagger grip on my sword and as he stumbles to my side, I swing out without even looking. My sword goes straight up through his stomach to his head, impaling him. I keep my eyes on the captain the entire time.” Mao Mao acted out his description in dramatic fashion, illustrating the movement for everyone else to see.

“Grizzly!”

“Cool!!”

“Oh, how terribly violent of you!”

“I’m going to action surge for an additional attack.”

“What are you doing?”

“I want to pick up the chief officer and throw him at the captain, sending them both overboard.”

“Yes! Yes! Yes!” Adorabat was thrilled.

“Normally that would be a strength contest, but… he’s dead, so he can’t resist being thrown. Roll a strength check, I guess.”

Trembling with excitement, Mao Mao picked up the die. He let it roll along the table, and then…

“ANOTHER TWENTY!!!!!” He stepped a foot up onto the table as everyone absolutely lost it.

“Oh my god! Okay! Okay hang on!” Badgerclops looked like he was ready to explode. “What’s it like, and do you say anything cool?”

“I switch grips on the sword again and hoist the entire chief officer over my head like a kebab, my massive muscles rippling under the sun. I plant one foot back, yell, and spear him at the captain like a javelin. My sword slides out of him as he shoots forward.”

Badgerclops looked up at Mao Mao. There was genuine excitement in his eyes. He was being open and vulnerable, and he was having fun. 

“The body collides with Captain Ulrich, knocking him over the bannister of the ship. He grapples with the corpse, trying to get a hand onto the side of the boat before he falls.”

“I say ‘Enjoy your new view of the reef.’”

“You hear fading screaming and then a splash as he plummets from the sinking ship and falls into the water below.”

Everyone around the table cheered. King Snugglemagne hopped out of his seat and grabbed Mao Mao off the table, spinning him around in a hug. “Good show, sheriff Mao Mao! Good show!!” He deposited Mao Mao, who was now blushing, back in his seat.

They played out a short epilogue to the adventure, Gilwyn and Rirkarg pulling up in a stolen lifeboat to rescue Mercutio from the sinking ship. They were technically felons now, since they’d destroyed the Duke’s ship and killed several people, so they fled as soon as the made land. But word spread of their heroism even though they weren’t there to tell it firsthand. Mercutio’s rise as a hero had begun.

“Oof, I’m EXHAUSTED!” Badgerclops said, slumping back in his chair. “Thanks for playing, guys.”

“Thank you for running this little experience, sheriff Badgerclops! It was most delightful.”

“Yeah Badgerclops, that was incredible!” Mao Mao laughed. 

Badgerclops smiled at him. Then suddenly, Mao Mao was hugging him.

“Thank you.”

It was a short hug. He blushed and walked away very quickly, taking some of the snack plates with him to the kitchen to clean them up.

“How do I stack up to the Sky Pirates?” Badgerclops asked Adorabat.

She considered. “Your worldbuilding is better, but Orangusnake’s character voices are incredible. And it’s more fun with a fourth player.”

Badgerclops thought for a moment. He counted on his fingers. “Huh. Too bad we don’t have any more friends.”

“But lots of enemies!”

Badgerclops chuckled.

First Look

1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences

Two hitmen, who learned to keep business and private life separate, happen to meet each other more often than not. Jumping over their own shadows, they get used to each other and things seem to get less work-related.

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be?

That’s hard bc I have no plan right now. I’m trying to push myself to a chapter length of, like, 3k-5k; and aim for a number of 20 chapters maybe. So we’ll end up somewhere between 60k and 100k.

3. What’s your novel’s aesthetic?

A rainy night in a big city. The asphalt is illuminated by traffic lights and neon signs. The air is filled with the sounds of traffic and cars.

But also a quiet house in the middle of nowhere. Two people co-existing, not talking much rather speaking through the music that fills the house.

Additionally, killing. Throwing hands until an arm is wrapped around the target’s neck to suffocate them. Or exhaling, calming the heartbeat as much as possible before gently pulling the trigger. Splattering blood over the walls.

4. What other stories have inspired your novel?

Definitely the John Wick Universe and the Hitman Universe (which I initially got the idea from). My WIP currently takes place in the John Wick Universe but I try to distance it through the second draft/editing phase.

6. Who is your protagonist?

Yrsa Agnarsdóttir. She is from Iceland and in her mid-twenties. Also she works as hitwoman. (For more info check out her OC Intro.)

Alexej Kznetsov. He is from Poland and in his late-twenties. He also works as a hitman. (For more info check out his OC Intro.)

7. Who is their closest ally?

There isn’t really a space for allies in their lives, since both, Yrsa and Alexej, spend most of their time travelling and working (alone).

However, for Yrsa there is still her family and her best friend who have her back. Though, they don’t know about her real profession. In later chapters Alexej joins this list.

Alexej, on the other hand, can’t relie on his (biological) family. Also friends are not really his cup of tea. So, there’s way to go for him.

8. Who is their enemy?

Enemies aren’t really a thing in this story but much rather I’d call it competition/rivals.

If the job offer for a hitman is not exclusive but public, it’s first come forst serve. The first person to show up and get the job done is the one who gets paid. Everyone else to show up after that gets left out in the cold.

9. What do they want more than anything?

Alexej? Probably just for Yrsa to shut up and calm down for once.

Yrsa? I have no idea yet. Maybe Alexej to loosen up a bit.

10. Why can’t they have it?

She doesn’t care. As simple as that. Yrsa doesn’t care about what people (other than her really close friends and family) think about her. But for Alexej? Maybe. Some day.

Alexej is way too reserved. He needs his time to get used to Yrsa, and her lively nature, before he can shake off the stiffness.

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?

Alexej feels guilty for his younger brother’s death. He had promised him that he would always protect him. Realizing that he should have been there and save him from the fire, had broken something deep within Alexej.

12. Draw your character

I’m sorry, I won’t make you suffer like that.

13. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?

For Yrsa it would be a family member dying (natural cause) or getting hurt (due to her job). She keeps them very close and loves them dearly. Also a friend, like Einar, dying because of whatever reason would really throw her off the track.

Alexej is less easy thrown off the track. He is quick to close his heart and shut down feelings. Something as shallow as a friend getting hurt or dying wouldn’t be that much of a deal. Also “friends” is a term that he doesn’t usually use to describe anybody. 

Therefore, it must be something that hit really close to home for Alexej. Maybe visiting his parents and realizing that they didn’t change at all in all those years he had been gone. Bonus points if they also blame him for his brother’s death, like he himself already does.

Yes, yes I’m hinting at a chapter throughout the book here. Thanks for noticing lmao

Plot Points

14. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?

Uhh... None, actually? This story is just about watching two people get used to the presence of someone else for the first time in a while. Also about seeing them become closer and, uh, dip into a romantic relationship.

15. Do you know how it ends?

Yes, and I plan on making a second part.

16. What is the theme?

The working title is a quote I read online and I think it’s from the Hitman video games or one of the movies.

“We determine who we are by what we do” obviously states that our destiny is in our own hands. What we do, how we act, is how we are. Everything we do has an impact on our future, and it’s up to us to control this.

But this story is also about the things we are forced to do to survive. Sometimes we can’t chose “what we do” and therefore it has less of an impact on us.

17. What is a recurring symbol?

Fighting, I guess. But also relaxing and coming down from the highs in very particular and private places.

18. Where is the story set?

As for the time We determine […] takes place in the modern world, like ours. Regarding a place it’s set all over the world, since both characters travel a lot. Though, there are recurring locations, like Yrsa’s house in Iceland.

19. Do you have images and scenes in mind already?

I’m still plotting and outlining but also started the first draft and make a lot of things up as I go. But I do have the major/key events, drafted and designed to the last detail, in my head already.

20. What excited you about this story?

I guess it was attempting to write something slow, where the characters need to grow before they’re ready to get involved in the relationship. I have never written something like that before so I see this as a bit of a challenge.

Also I haven’t really written anything for a long while. Especially anything longer. That also made me decide to officially pick up on this.

21. What is your usual writing method? 

After vaguely making things up in my head while watching movies or series, I write that down slightly more detailed in an app where I can already structure everything and easily change stuff. Then, when I actually start typing things out, the real creative flow starts and I feed everything into a Google Doc or Word Doc.

carrying a weapon.

The creature gazed curiously at us with what seemed to be eyes, although

antennae, flexible as whips, grew and began waving toward us.

The alien calls dibs on the dinosaurs and speaks Fucking English

We flew toward the shining city in the valley. With osprey eyes I could see much more clearly. I saw buildings that rose in steep, smooth sweeps, like they'd grown from the bedrock. Windows were stuck in odd locations, some aiming out, others more like skylights. And there were fields planted with green and arranged in neat circles instead of rows.

The aliens themselves:

As we got closer, I could see creatures of some sort. They looked a little like large - very large - crabs. Only with shells in a wild array of colors, deep blue, spring green, orange. And while on one side there was something very much like a large pincer, on the other side there was a pair of hands.

The ground beside me exploded, like it had been ripped by an invisible

pyramid, long end forward.

There were three of the creatures. They moved upon seven legs. Four on

one side, three on the other. To make matters worse, the four

legs were larger than the three. So they scuttled sideways in the

direction of the small legs.

They stood about half the height of a tall human, and seven or eight

feet wide.

On the side with the four big legs, there was a sort of three-way pincer

claw. It looked very powerful. It looked like the sort of thing I would

not want to have to fight against.

On the other side, the weak side, there were two arms similar to my own,

but even stronger than human arms. The arms ended in long, tapered,

delicate fingers.

There were a lot of eyes. They kept opening and shutting, one or two or

three at a time. They were each hidden beneath tiny trap doors in the

Mercora's exoskeleton or shell. Eyes were forever appearing and

disappearing. It was very, very distracting.

The Mercora saucer picked us up, us and our little nuke. But they were a

grim, depressed bunch of aliens. It was hard to tell at first. But then

I noticed that each of them was minus one of their smaller legs. There

were just oozing stumps.

"What happened to your legs?" I asked. But even as the words were out of

my mouth, I saw the limbs in the corner. They were laid out on a

brightly colored cloth which was draped over a shelf. There was

something ceremonial about it. Almost religious.

<Can you explain the meaning of this?> Ax asked politely.

<We must make the sacrifice of pain. The legs will regenerate, but those

we honor will not,> the Mercora pilot said. <This is a symbol. It speaks

to our spirit's pain, by echoing it in physical pain.>

"They did this for the Mercora who were in the other ship?" Jake asked.

<For those who were in both ships,> the pilot said. <To be killed is a

sadness. To kill is a sin.>

Jake says the they owe the mercora for saving them

Dumb AC concept ideas

So this is basically a info dump of ideas for potential AC games and concepts that its been playing with in my head, it's mostly me nerding out about junk (look if I can info dump about Teotihuacan I’ll do it.) like it's ideas that I think would be cool and what id want to see in future installments, even if they aren't likely to happen. It's also written super casually cause I started making this in a burst of inspiration at like 2 am and yet still got distracted from it cause I started going on tangents. So it's a bit of a mess. I’m totally down for bouncing ideas around if anyone has their own concepts.

1920’s jazz age assassin from the beginning of unity and the abstergo employee handbook. "The lives and failures of the most degenerate Americans to ever grace the world's stage - Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Stein." please tell me how this doesn't sound cool as shit? Okokokokokokok SO… CARS. like this dude would have a car (and of course the player can earn different cars and looks for their car and junk, including a yellow Duesenberg… like come on if he knew Fitzgerald they gotta let this dude drive Gatsby's car.)  I think there can be an argument about him having a rope launcher attachment buuut maybe not??? I mean a car and a rope launcher would be dope as hell. The dude probably bounced between Paris and New York if he's a genuine jazz age junkie like how abstergo describes him and his writer pals. Also it would be cool to meet Picasso… also his base of operations should be a fucking speakeasy, like duh, like where else would a 1920’s assassin camp out? I don’t really have any plot ideas but the concept of a jazz age assassin is cool enough for me to want it this badly.

1970’s-1980’s William Miles in a corporate espionage type game, like i know he had Desmond in 1987 but he was an active filed assassin in 1977 when he was in Moscow so clearly he could've been doing other junk around then. It doesn't have to be him, i just want a 70’d-80’s assassin trying to fuck with abstergo and trying to steal animus research or something. Like Alieen Bock died in 81 and that was at the height of animus research before abstergo started really investing in it cause of Vidic. Like the surrogate initiative and the animus project are… basically the same thing really. Like knowing that Altair and Ezio were not actually related until their bloodlines crossed with Desmond. So with the memory keys being cited as an integral part of the animus project they obviously had a role to play in the surrogate project. Besides the newer games are pretty loosey-goosey with how the DNA and animus junk works now, with the spear having DNA traces or whatever and its corrupted enough that we could… choose things?? (don't ask questions just have fun i guess.) ok i’m over thinking this stuff… but come on… disco!!!!! Please please please have a disco assassination. Like… the idea of an assassin taking out a target at the disco is cool enough for me to want it. ALSO!!! If it goes into the 80’s then please for the love of god a Thriller inspired outfit would be to die for. Like i know getting the exact look would be a trademark nightmare but an inspired look may be able to get away with it. I just want some real corporate espionage type missions while dressed in some brightly colored dorky(cool as shit) 70’s/80’s fashion.

So like… ANYTHING from ancient Andean culture. So The Chimú or the Moche… that would be cool, but I'd settle for Wari and Tiwanaku. I just kinda want to see Chan Chan recreated. And Moche art was so fucking good like… idk man they're making video games that are mostly of ancient cultures now so the possibility of them making something in a more modern setting is slim to none. Like come on they're gonna want to make like idk maybe one more really ancient cultural game so they can still reuse assets again before making a whole new saga. That's just their track record. The problem with doing an ancient andean cultural video game is that there isn't a lot to work with other then our knowledge of the architecture and artistry of the ancient peoples. We have art documentary significant events but there isn't really any historical recordings so there's no significant figures to meet or events to take part in that we know of right now. BUT that also means that hey if Ubisoft wants us to have freedom of choice within the narrative this would be a great opportunity.

Speaking of ancient culturesssss ancient Mexican cultures would be REALLY cool too. Like obviously Mayans culture is the first to come to mind but AC already kinda explored the Mayans so idk maybe a more underrated ancient culture deserves the spotlight. The Zapotec and other civilizations in the Oaxaca. Like this would be really cool since we actually see a rise in raiding and conquest warfare, like theres these bas-relief stone carvings called Las Danzantes which are actually depictions of sacrificial victims, most likely foreign captives. The architecture is also to die for like i’m a sucker for talud-tablero style stuff popping up in ancient Latin america. Also do i gotta say it? BALL COURTS!!! A recreation of the ancient ball game in a video game would be cool as shit my dudes like… please i want this so bad. Like how origins depicted mummification with respect I’d love to see the same kind of loving dedication to the funerary practices of the ancient peoples. (off topic completely but some latin american civilizations had their own forms of mummification) like i wanna see the abandonment of Monte Alban and the later use of it by the Mixtecs. But the most important thing about the celebration of the ancient Zapotec would be the ability to celebrate the modern Zapotec culture, that would just be cool. Ok I’ll finish up this train of ideas with the one i really really really want to see recreated, the original Teotihuacan, before the Aztecs found it. With the pyramids being painted and covered in beautiful carvings and, of course, talud-tablero style architecture. It's basically the biggest ancient city in mesoamerica with hidden cave systems that we are still finding today and so much of the ancient city was built over because it might've been covered up or eroded to the point where no one knew it was there, or because there wasn't really anyone who cared enough to uh, not build on top of historical sites. Modern mexico city is built all around and on top of it (apparently you can see Walmart from the top of the temple of the sun…) so its a huge ancient city that was really colorful and really populated with crazy ancient tunnels underneath the pyramids that we’ve only discovered recently so how fucking cool are those possibilities? Like i just can't get over the idea of some assassin-esque person climbing up red pyramids and sitting next to statues and carvings of Queztalcoatl painted in a turquoise. Ancient farms and city life thriving. From what we know about it, like many other ancient latin american cities it was abandoned at some point, exactly why is unclear though (probably a mix of things cause there wasn't any kings really but more like… neighborhood councils (that's the best guess rn)). It was an actual city though, most archaeologists compare it to modern cities due to its city planning and its huge population. What was left behind was so spectacular that when the Aztecs found it they legit thought it was the city of the gods. This was a real fucking city and I’m crazy about it man i want it in a fucking video game my dudes.

COWBOYS PLEASE. Like i know rdr2 came out so they probably wont do it (for a while at least) and they already have the gold rush assassin so they've dabbled with cowboy stuff but… cowboys… like theres nothing else to say really… Cowboys. Also like i know how AC is pretty much ass melee combat and cowboys means guns and lots of guns and bows and probably rope darts. But… folding swords. That my shitty solution to have melee combat, like syndicate had melee and some gun stuff cause duh, but it was mostly melee. Like you can make the game centered around stealth so a lot more sneaking then combat, kinda like in unity. I have a few ideas for this one but most of them play into my own personal cowboy wish fulfillment fantasy of owning a farm with snakes for the production of venoms and other toxins. It's hard to explain but i kinda really want to see someone with a snake/spider enclosure where they produce venoms for the protag to use. The specific time period i have in mind is like 1870-1888 but it could defo go later. It's just that was peak for a lot of famous gunslingers and robberies. And Mesa Verde was basically rediscovered in the late 1880’s (its kinda weird like it was “officially” discovered in 88 but others saw it before that soooo. Also Montezuma Castle would be cool to visit in game as well. I dont have have a lot of knowledge about mesa verde or Montezuma but i know they're cool af.) the wild west is just ripe with possibility so i have some hope they’ll do one in the future but i don't see it happening anytime within the next couple of years.

Please for the love of god give me a AC3/unity dual sequel. Set in 1798 Egypt before during and maybe a little after the french invasion of Egypt. There would be a ton to work around and justify to get that to happen in universe buuuuut… i want it so badly. I have a shit ton of ideas but im saving all of that for a rainy day. 

I wouldn't mind if they actually did stuff with WWI, mostly cause i really like that one WWI assassin from project legacy and Lydia's whole thing was really cool.

i totalled my first car and got hit in my rental

unfortunately yes, this actually happened

its a gloomy rainy day, you're driving and sobbing uncontrollably to bulletproof... I wish I was by radiohead. you're in autopilot, the destination is work and you're taking your normal route cruising down reesor road. the grey skies and wet roads are giving very much ... the giver. you know this road, you could drive it with your eyes closed, you're going around the first sharp turn expecting there to be nobody there. there's never anyone there. why are five cars stopped immediately after this turn. oh shit, you have to break. bro break harder. yeah no, you're not gonna break in time. no chance.

you end up completely rear ending an old CR-V. now one thing no one ever talks about when you get in an accident... is that the music still keeps playing. realization sits in... you've been in an accident but thom yorke's shrill voice is still fucking blaring through your shitty mini cooper's sound system.

the CR-V has minor damages, but your cars totalled. there's no saving it. the people you hit are young, super nice and understanding. you're crying even harder now, apologizing over and over and over again. you hit them and they're consoling you. get a grip.

you do what you gotta do when you're in an accident. exchange info, head to the collision centre, watch your first car get towed away. collision centres already suck and they suck even more when you're at fault. the workers are grilling you hard, they know your insurance bout to skyrocket. you might still be teary eyed, nose running under your mask.

its been a couple of days since you totalled your car. you’re driving a rental, its nice, its got CarPlay, its red, and its got that new car smell. you’re figuring out how you’re going to come up with the money for a new car that's not another piece of shit. 

you take a drive to north york with your bestie to try out a bakery and you parallel park on the road. already a miracle in itself. you come out of the bakery and the front end of your rental car has got some damage. just when it can't get any worse. immediately your mind returns to when you were signing the waiver for the rental car and declining the insurance that covers any damage that happens to car thinking “oh I could never possibly get into an accident with this rental, the probability of that happening is extremely low.” ... not for you babe. not for you. 

just like that $500 is gone. and you still don't have a car to get you anywhere. you eventually find a really nice car, a 2015 volkswagen golf, a huge upgrade from your mini cooper. you love the car. after all the costs between the tow trucks, insurance, rental deductible and down payment for your new car go through, the 3000 dollars you worked so hard to save in order to move out turned into a lousy $700. 

but at least you’re still alive!

Supernatural 13.13

This episode was so abysmally bad I almost cried. It starts out bad and then you hit that middle point and it’s like trying to roll up a muddy hill on a rainy day. This episode is what it’d be like if Supernatural was a bad Hallmark movie about the devil.

I learned nothing important, what I didn’t already know was insignificant and could have quite frankly been left out, they were unnecessary extra’s.

When played by Mark and Jared I love Lucifer and tend to enjoy his appearances for the most part but this time, even though Mark did a great job with his acting, I just blanked out for his scenes, which considering this was a Lucifer-centered ep means I blanked out for this episode. The only times I felt anything when it came to this character was when he sucked the grace out of “Sister Jo” because that was just disturbing, and when the whole Hallmark-y moment talk between him and Sister Jo happened which is when I almost cried because this is what this show has become people, the devil and random new angel #who-the-fuck-cares having pillow talk after an angel-grace sucking portrayed to be erotic but in a reality is just weird and disturbing. 

Like everything else these two (Buckner-Leming) try to make erotic, seriously stop it, you fucking pervs! Lucifer deserves a better centered-on him episode.

The boys were in this for like 15mins or something, probably less I don’t know like I said I blanked out; their moments were so few and short that they were actually insignificant, and I’m saying this as someone who adores those two but not even they could save this episode, and God bless ‘em they really tried, Jared in particular threw in Sam’s reactions to seeing Lucifer again with flinches and stuff and really sold it, that boy is truly an amazing actor and says so much with just his face, but that script was just too bad.   

Gabriel’s return wasn’t nearly as exciting as I expected it to be, I like the character so I’m happy at the thought of him being back but at the same time we’ve got no idea if this is the Gabriel we know and love so I’m going to remain weary about this return until I see a reason to not be; also I’m not sure if the writers did Gabriel with his mouth sewn shut on purpose referencing that Gabriel is Loki, it’s an interesting nod to give but I can’t imagine a lot of people understood it.  

Sister Jo, an angel who carries herself like a snake, is exactly what she is, a character written for the sole purpose of Danneel appearing on the show.

I’ve never seen Danneel act before, probably because she doesn’t know how to, so I don’t know if she was even trying to do a good job but she doesn’t change her tone, her expressions, doesn’t emote; she comes in one setting and the dial doesn’t move. 

There was one highlight in this episode, it wasn’t a full highlight but it was a highlight, Arthur Ketch.  And let me tell you why, because he had had the best line and the most interesting moment.  He was, like the rest of this episode, blank out worthy up until the almost end, when he gets asked how he escaped from the Impala’s trunk and replies with what to me is the best line of the episode, 

“I’m Ketch”

Two words. Short, simple, and so damn funny I almost fell down. And I give all of the credit to the actor, David Haydn-Jones and how he delivered that line.

Then he surprises me by actually telling the boys that he’s working with Asmodeus. Is he going to go through with giving the boys info? I don’t know, but the moment he was honest about what was happening I was like ‘okaay’ and was sitting down cause for the first time things got interesting and I just had to hear what he was going to say; those like 5?minutes he was talking where the most interesting part of this episode. And it brought back my thoughts of s12 that this character is a lot smarter than most people would think, and I’m gonna be honest I find him intriguing and it’s hilarious that the writers probably don’t even know they’re accidentally writing an interesting character.

The most impressive thing about this episode is that it’s so bad that I’m not even mad. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t. And if you do then put it as background noise, this isn’t worth sitting down and paying attention to, you’re just gonna waste your time.

Pairing: Dean x Reader

Summary: Dean challenges the reader to a try not to laugh challenge using pickup lines, but for her the challenge turns into a bit more of a try not to fall deeper in love with the lovable dork.

Triggers: None unless you count cheesy pickup lines

Y/N = Your name

You and dean would do little challenges like others did movie nights. 

Quiet night in? Fuck it, I bet you I could kick your ass in the gun range. Rainy day? I bet I have the better insults. Research days? I bet I could find the info before you, and so on. 

Some people played games or just relaxed together. You didn’t even know what relax meant, and while it drove Sammy crazy, Dean was always on board. The crazier the challenge, the funnier the memory.

That night you were in serious need of something to do. The big baddies of the world had been keeping a low profile and on top of that the weather was absolutely shit. If you didn’t stretch either your legs or your mind you were sure you’d actually go mad and start crawling on the walls any minute. 

Luckily, Dean seemed to have the same idea as he entered the library, armed with three beers and a shit-eating grin.

“Up for a challenge (Y/N)?” The hunter said, forgoing a greeting completely as he handed Sam and you a beer each before dropping down onto the couch next to you. 

“I’ve got a good one for ya,” He added, the mischievous glint in his eyes promising good times to be had by all. Or maybe not all, if Sam’s groan was anything to go by.

“Sounds like a bad idea… I’m in,” You said with a laugh as you straightened up a bit in your seat. All ears as both the oldest Winchester and you ignored Sam’s muttered complaints. Taking a sip of your beer you waited as the boyish grin grew on Dean’s face and his green eyes lit up. Somehow he was always pleasantly surprised when you took him up on a challenge, which was kinda silly, since you never really said no to one.

“Alright then, I saw this one online. It was called something like try not to laugh,” Dean started, his own grin wide where your own smile fell a little as you sank back into the couch with a roll of your eyes and a bored groan.

“Damn Dean, you actually had me excited there for a second. Everybody does those these days, and you know they won’t work on us,” Your complaint interrupted Dean’s attempt to explain his latest challenge as you drowned your disappointment in a sip of your beer. 

“Too easy… We have to keep a straight face on hunts constantly. A few videos online won’t make either of us crack,”

“Yeah, I thought that too. Until I changed it up a bit,” Dean’s smile hadn’t lessened on your complaint. His cryptic excitement making your ears perk up as you raised an eyebrow. Opting to not sit up straight until you were sure it was a challenge worthy of breaking your boredom. 

“No videos, no jokes, just banter,”

“What?” You asked, forced to ask the question when Dean stopped for a dramatic pause, eyeing you up to see how you reacted to his latest challenge. 

“Be clear man, you know I don’t agree to a challenge without the full terms. Hunter 101: never go into battle unarmed,”

“Alright, alright… Basically, you throw me a line, I throw you one. First one to crack loses,” Dean said with a small chuckle and a cocky smile on his lips as his eyes followed you where you once more straightened on the couch. A battle of wits; your favourite kind.

“Lines?” You asked as you readied yourself by mentally going through the different archives in your mind that contained lines. Movie quotes, insults, one liner jokes, puns… Still, as Dean nodded next to you, eyes bright like a kid on Christmas his next words made you realise you’d picked out the wrong archives from your mind. Your heart sinking a little along with the hunter’s next three words.

“Yeah, pickup lines,” Dean said grinning, almost jumping up and down on the couch as he got ready for you to accept his challenge and start the battle. 

“You either tell me a new funny line or you work off mine, both are allowed,”

Oh no…. Not good. You were in love with the big dork. Having him throw pickup lines your way while you flirted back was not good for the Great Wall of Friendship you’d built around your heart and mind. 

Good thing you also didn’t have enough common sense to let that stop you.

“Deal!” You grinned, twisting on the couch until you were fully facing him, your legs curled up under you as you pushed the neck of your bottle out towards his; a toast to seal the deal. 

“Oh, this is gonna be easy. I’ve hear your lines before big guy. All the time, at every dive bar we’ve visited,” You added with an early victorious stretch, rolling your shoulders as if you were limbering up for a fight.

Giving the hunter in front of you your best cocky half smile, you took a sip of your beer. Pretending your own words hadn’t hurt you as you tried to ready yourself mentally for the battle ahead.

“I’m ready to get creative this time sweetheart,” Dean chuckled, making you eye him suspiciously. Of course, whenever one of you proposed a challenge it normally meant that the challenger had taken the time to prepare. But you weren’t gonna be outdone. 

Not when it came down to whom had the dirtiest mind.

You were just about to cast doubt over Dean’s flirting skills once more when you caught movement out of the side of your eye. Glancing over to where Sam had given up on his book and was getting out of his chair with the bitchiest of bitch glares.

“Alright, no. I’m not ok with this. I’ll be in my room,” Sam groaned as he went to leave, bringing his book and beer along with him. Sure, you understood why. Dean and you could get a bit over the top competitive. But you still let out a laugh at the big guy’s pout as Dean tried to convince him to stay and keep score.

“Come on Sammy!” Dean’s words lost some of their power from the laughter that followed them as his eyes, like yours, stayed on the younger hunter.

“Good night, keep it down,” Sam grumbled, choosing to ignore his brother’s pleas. Which of course meant that you’d lost your referee. Luckily the challenge didn’t really need one. All you had to do was catch Dean enough off guard to make him laugh. All while making sure he didn’t make you laugh either.

“Leave him be, this’ll be cringe worthy enough for me to endure, no need to pull Sam into it,” You laughed waving goodnight to Sam with your bottle as the big guy elected to roll his eyes in your general direction instead of responding. Pushing the door open with one long leg before easily escaping the room as you readied yourself for what could turn out to be a filthy battle.

“So who goes first?” You asked once your laughter died down. Turning your attention fully towards the older of the Winchester brothers and trying to force the smile off of your lips. You had to fully compose yourself if you wanted to win the challenge. Even if all your challenges were only ever fought for bragging rights.

“Me! I’ll go,” Dean’s boyish grin only grew wider as he turned to fully face you on the couch. Clearly the hunter was pretty proud of his challenge, which meant you probably had to be ready to put up a fight if you wanted to win.

“Ok then, Winchester. Wow me with your skills,” You said, lifting an eyebrow and the beer bottle at the same time. You’d already decided to use your beer bottle as a shield in the upcoming battle of the wittiest. Maybe if you took a sip whenever the hunter spoke you’d be able to keep from laughing. If nothing else it was worth a shot. 

Yet, as Dean spoke, cocky grin in place, you started to doubt the necessity of your bottle shield.

“If I could rearrange the alphabet I’d put U and I together,” Dean delivered the overused line with all the confidence of a man who’d had that line work for him before. Yet it teased nothing more than a groan and an eye roll out of you.

“That’s not creative Dean, and this isn’t the try not to cringe challenge either,” You sighed. Adding an overacted fake yawn to your complaint as the hunter just winked at you. The confidence shining off of him not lessening at all from your comment on his starter line.

“I just thought I could catch you off guard with a cringey one,” Dean said with a small smirk and a shrug of his shoulders. Allowing himself one quick wide grin before composing his features to wait for your comeback. 

“Your turn, play off mine or make your own. The choice is yours sweetheart,”

The nickname did things to you. Things that you didn’t want to get into at the moment as you considered your options with his pick up line. The alphabet line was one of the oldest in an already ancient book, but you could make it work.

“Sure, rearrange away. As long as I come before you,” You shot back. Mimicking one of Dean’s overdone winks in hopes that the dirtiness of your comeback paired with the clownishness of the wink would earn you an early victory.

Dean however, kept a straight face. Though light danced in his eyes where laughter was contained at your attempt of freshening up the overused line.

“Good one (Y/N), as always you’re a worthy opponent,” Dean kept his voice neutral as he commended your pickup skills. Only speaking up after a quick sip of beer that you could swear hid a small smile. 

“My turn,”

Making a big show of clearing his throat and leaning forward, Dean set his eyes on you and grabbed your free hand. Which you honestly believed was cheating, though you couldn’t find your voice for long enough to tell him that. His bright green eyes locked with yours  before he delivered his next line.

“Are you chocolate pudding? ‘Cause I wanna spoon you,” Dean purred, voice smooth as the new pickup line threatened to tug on the corners of your mouth before you managed to wrestle ‘em back under control.

“Good one Winchester,” You hummed. Your neutral expression not matching your words as you tried to tear your mind off of where his hand was still holding onto yours for long enough to deliver a line back. 

“I’ve never heard that one before,”

“Saved the best for you sweetheart,” Dean gave you a small wink as he steeled himself for your comeback.

Your back and forth epic battle of the pickup lines had lasted for quite a while. If the empty bottles on the table were anything to go on. The hours ticking away as you both tried to think up new and funny pickup lines, borrowing from movies and at times going back to the basics when you drew a blank. 

Yet, your earlier statement about your excellent poker face skills had rang true and neither of you managed to tease a smile out of the other.

Of course, the few beers were starting to work on both of you. So, keeping the smiles and laughter back were becoming increasingly difficult with each new line. Even the ones where the delivery of the line was slightly slurred and destroyed by the alcohol.

“You dropped something… My jaw,” Dean slurred, straight faced, sending the challenge back your way as you scoured your mental archives for a new line to throw his way. The challenge had quickly turned into a quick back and forth match as the evening progressed, leaving little space for thought. 

“Are you my little toe, ‘cause I wanna bang you on every piece of furniture,” You delivered the line flawlessly. Which was probably mainly due to the beers; since you’d normally never dare to say something like that to him. 

After all, you had thought about Dean and you, naked, on pretty much every freaking piece of furniture in the bunker at one point in time. Or up against them… Or next to them… Or under… Hell, anywhere near anything really. 

You weren’t picky.

You caught one corner of Dean’s mouth twitch before the hunter seemed to compose himself enough to deliver another line your way. Damn it… You really thought you’d get him with that one.

“Hey, (Y/N)….” Dean said, seeming really serious as he scooted closer to you. His hand abandoning his bottle of beer on the table as he reached down to the hem of his t-shirt, pulling it up and out a bit in a way that gave you a teasing glimpse of the perfectly toned stomach below. 

“Do you know what my shirt is made of?��

“What?” You asked, slightly confused and tentative as to where he was going with that one. Though you still obliged as you playfully tugged on his t-shirt, trying not to ogle the piece of bare skin he was showing below it.

“Boyfriend material,” 

Damn it. The way he smiled, all proud of his line like the cute dork he was, almost made you crack. But you pulled it together at the last moment with a straight faced nod and a quick sip of your beer as Dean picked up his own beer again. 

“Damn, I thought for sure I’d get you there. Also, it’s more than just good, it’s true,” Dean sighed into his beer. The clearly fake sigh falling away quickly as he threw a grin and a wink your way before composing himself again.

“Yeah, yeah Mr. Hotshot,” You huffed. Hoping your exaggerated eye roll would take the hunter’s attention away from your probably blushing cheeks as you clinked your bottle against his. Hurrying to throw a line back at him in hopes of catching him off guard. 

“You’re so hot even my pants are falling for you,”

Dean let out a surprised cough at your words, quickly making it clear that it wasn’t a laugh when you raised your eyebrows with a smirk. Damn it, the hunter was stubborn, you’d give him that.

Then again... So were you.

Your little game had lasted for around half an hour more before you were both about to run out of lines and the table looked ready to break under the weight of the empty bottles lining the already cluttered surface. You’d just thrown another line Dean’s way when the hunter decided once more to turn the challenge into a cringe fest. Shooting you another line you’d heard him use, successfully mind you, in a dive bar.

“On a scale from 1 to 10: you’re a 9 and I’m the 1 you need,” Dean crooned, adding finger guns and raising his eyebrows at the cheesy line in hopes of making you laugh and winning the challenge that at that point had lasted throughout most of your repertoire. Though you still both had a few cards up your sleeves.

“Ok, first off Winchester. You know damned well I’m a 10… But… Sure, let me get your number too, just in case,” You shot back, not pausing to give him time to compose himself. Before lounging back against the couch like you were the god damned queen of sass. The quick retort got you one of those half smiles hidden by his lips on the bottle that you only allowed because they looked too sexy to deny.

“Sorry, I lost my number, could I have yours instead?” Dean shot back, making the overdone one liner last for a full turn as you lifted your bottle in respect of his quick wittedness. Even if his follow up to your line was another overdone cheesy line with extra cheese.

Lifting your bottle to your lips and frowning when you put it back down. Still thirsty, as the beer had somehow miraculously disappeared from yet another bottle, you decided it was time to use your hidden ace line. If only to spare your liver from any more beers and your heart from any more lines. 

If this one didn’t get him, nothing would.

“I might not be your precious Impala, but I’d let you ride me any day,” You purred with a wicked smirk than only grew into a full shit-eating grin as Dean choked on his sip of beer before finally bursting. His laughter warming your heart and boosting your ego as you lifted your arms in celebration of your victory.

“Unfair!” Dean coughed. Laughter still seeping through his words as he finally managed to speak again. 

“That was a direct hit!”

“I’m just that good Winchester, deal with it,” You laughed as you finally let your poker face drop. The laughter bubbling up easily as you thought back on his earlier lines now that you could actually enjoy them. Even if your enjoyment was slightly marred by unwarranted jealousy. 

“You had some good ones too though. Like that boyfriend material line at the end,”

“That one was true y’know,” Dean chuckled. His laughter dying down as he took a sip of his beer almost as if he was readying himself for another line though the challenge was over and you had no clue where he could be going with that one.

“I doubt your shirt is made by actual boyfriend material Dean,” You parried with a confused laugh as you decided to torture your liver with another beer, Smiling as Dean beat you to it and handed you one of the bottles he’d brought in on his last trip to the kitchen.

The smile Dean gave you back however wasn’t one of the confident boyish grins he’d been giving you with his lines. No, this one was softer, almost hesitant as he leaned against the couch and kept his eyes on you while you took a sip.

“Yeah, but I think I could be…” Dean’s words were cryptic and barely even there. His voice breaking over them as he wet his throat with another sip before licking an escaped droplet off his lips in a way that sent electricity through your whole body in a way no line could ever replicate. Yet, his words still had you stumped as you let your head fall against the back of the couch while you watched him struggle to find the right words.

“Could be what?” You asked when the hunter stayed silent. Clearly expecting some sort of response from you.

“Good boyfriend material,” Dean clarified, a vulnerable shy smile on his lips as he raised one hand to rub at his neck. An embarrassed tick you’d come to find adorable over your many years silently loving the man in front of you. The words paired with his adorable shyness made you wonder for a split second if he meant what you thought he meant. Until Dean made his meaning clear to fill the silence that followed his words. 

“I mean… If you’ll have me,”

So yeah, you probably looked like an idiot. Shell shocked and stumped as you looked at the man in front of you. 

The man you’d through only saw you as a buddy. As someone to challenge for a quick laugh and break from the boredom. And though you wanted to tell him yes, your brain and voice seemed unable to work due to the shock of the revelation that maybe your unrequited crush wasn’t all that unrequited after all.

“Look, so, ok… Maybe I was getting a bit jealous thinking who you might be flirting with. And maybe I just… I just wanted to let you know. You can pretend it was only the beer speakin’ if you want to,” Dean added, his shy smile falling away as he once more was forced to fill the silence since you’d been left only gaping and  wide-eyed at the shock you’d received from his words. The small hopeful shine in his eyes losing some of its spark as he seemed to mistake your silence for outright rejection. 

“Or you could laugh it off or, hell, just do anything…”

Deciding showing rather than telling might be better, as you’d clearly lost all your quick wittedness as soon as Dean made his feelings clear. You reached out with your free hand, grabbing a hold of his t-shirt while your other hand put the bottle clumsily back on the table. As soon as the bottle hit the table; you pulled him in and kissed him in lieu of a verbal response.

Your lips softened quickly against his as Dean stayed motionless for no more than a split second, before his arm hesitantly wrapped around your waist to pull you closer. His lips careful and sweet against yours as he tested the waters before letting his teeth graze your bottom lip making you open your mouth. Finally deepening the kiss that tasted of beer and sugar as you let yourself drown in it for a minute.

You were kissing Dean. The man you had loved since nearly the first moment you met, and hell if you weren’t going to savour every second as you kept your fingers wrapped in the soft cotton material of his t-shirt. Loving the taste of him paired with the feeling of his hand drawing circles against your waist where your t-shirt met your jeans.

As you finally pulled away, finding the voice that had been lost to you only moments earlier you let your tongue slide across your bottom lip. Still tasting him there while you found your breath again and spoke up over your own erratic heartbeat. Your fingers sliding the cotton of his t-shirt between them as you smiled at the hunter in front of you and delivered a final line of your own.

“Y’know… Now that I feel it again I think you’re right,” You hummed, unable to keep yourself from leaning in towards Dean to kiss him again now that you’d tasted him once. 

“Perfect boyfriend material,” Letting your lips brush softly against his once. You whispered the words before any others, lines or otherwise, were swallowed in another kiss.

You normally did challenges for bragging rights, but hell… This was the best challenge, and definitely the best prize, yet.

Our Staycation- Chapter 2

The next day, I woke up feeling tired and angry. 

Tired because I was checking too much info about the virus in the night, and I ended up being angry at the situation, the virus, people who fled to outside Wuhan when they knew there was something wrong, and myself. Even though I knew it was not my fault but I hate being stuck in the apartment and not being able to give myself a more comfy life. I am a lousy cook and terrible at housework. Yesterday I tried to water my plants and ended up flooding the balcony.

I couldn’t help thinking about Davey’s message from yesterday.

“By the way, I have signed the contract, and made the payment.”

He was talking about his plan to immigrate to Portugal.

About two weeks ago, he mentioned to me about this whole Portugal thing.

“350,000 euros. I would consider this as a real estate investment. You buy a house there, and 5 years later, you get the permanent residence permit.”

I always knew Davey has a talent for selling stuff. He could make you feel proud of yourself after a very impulsive shopping splurge. “You need that bag. It is an investment. You will even walk differently with it. You only live once, and live to the fullest.”

Of course this time, I had questions for this Portugal case.

“Portugal? Um, I am having a hard time picturing you as a Portuguese.”

“Portugal is a wonderful country. They used to be the king over the sea. Let me forward you this article. Do you know that Portugal passport is more ‘powerful’ than US and UK passport? Not to mention it’s VISA-waiver if I want to go to UK. 350,000 euro for immigration is really a good deal. I will think of it as an investment, you know, the permanent residence permit is just a plus.”

I could sense what has been going on in Davey’s mind. He wants to live in Shanghai and there is no doubt about it. After all, the convenience in the city gives people easy addiction. Who could turn down to living in a city where you can order medication delivery on the app at 3am? However, he does covet a residence permit at another country. According to him, this is “saving for a rainy day”, or “when situations get out of control.” I am sure the coronavirus break-out this time gave him a little push on the decision-making.

“Right...So you will officially move to Portugal?”

“No need. According to the agency, first year I only need to go for 5 days, and 14 days for the second and third year...and so on. When it’s the fifth year, I need to take a Portuguese language test to prove my proficiency. Well, you know me, I just want a permanent residence permit, saving it for the rainy day.”

I smiled. 

“But you will have to travel to Portugal at least to see the property you bought?”

“No need. The agency will guarantee investment return. All I have to do is to pay.”

“...Isn’t it better to go there and see it with your own eyes?”

“There was contract signed.”

No many question marks emerged. I typed and deleted, for many times. In the end, I pressed send with “Great. I really wish it could be a success this time.”

With the permanent residence permit, Davey could be “free” again. This has been his wish since he was little. We would watch Travel Channel and send each other messages back and forth at 11:30pm on Saturdays when we were 13 years old. Imagining ourselves going everywhere, live in London, fly to Amsterdam during the weekend, travel to South America for holidays...I think I wanted it more than him back then.

Among people who know us both, they consider us the typical anti-China Chinese kids.

Yet that is so not sure. 

When we were 14 and during the summer break in 2004, I saw a post on a forum about a voice clip of a Japanese guy (not sure if he was really Japanese or not) speaking ill of China, calling us the lowlife breed, the symbol of laziness and filthiness.

I forwarded this to Davey and within just a few minutes, he called me.

“Aren’t you mad?!”

“Yes, I was even shaking with fury!”

In my mind, the idea of us wanting to live abroad has nothing to do with whether we love our culture and people or not.

We decided from early on that we would go to universities outside China. Davey did it. He went to UK for his master’s. I didn’t. I went to a local university and found a job after graduation.

I didn’t speak to Davey at all after he told me he was going to UK.

Even when I received all those letters and postcards that he sent, I just tossed them into the bedroom drawer without reading them.

I had a feeling that he betrayed me, and stole my dream. Davey was living my dream. It broke my heart to see my own pride and hope in pieces.

The unstated fact was that Davey’s mom started to have a blooming career two years after Davey and I knew each other. When we were in high school, Davey’s mom already owned a law firm. On the contrary, my dad’s business suffered a disastrous fall, and my mom never really “allowed” him to do business anymore.

That’s right. Davey could afford going abroad for further education. And I couldn’t.

The year of our high school graduation, I signed up for TOEFL test and prepared all the materials, without telling anyone, for applying universities in the US.

When the offers, one from Syracuse University, arrived at our post, I could never forget the scene of me running with it in my pocket with the wind blowing my hair all over my face.

“Did you get a scholarship?”

“No.”

“In that case, we won’t be able to afford it. One year 200,000rmb, four years will be 800,000rmb. Unless we sell this apartment.”

My mom was busy cooking. She didn’t look at me when she was saying those words.

We already sold two apartments to clear dad’s debt.

I stared at the floor of the kitchen, until things get blurred. I turned around and went back to my room. I got tears in my eyes but I didn’t let them overspread my face.

Maybe that’s when I realized Davey and I weren’t in the same world. We had a gap between us.

However he was my best friend. We talked every day and we spent so much time with each other. I couldn’t bear to lose him.

The day Davey went off to UK, I told myself that I should forget about him and get some, well, practical friendship.

If he stole my dream, then I should have a new dream right?

That’s why we didn’t speak much to each other for almost four years.

Not exactly, because Davey did return to Shanghai for a brief period of time in between. We had lunch together, but that turned me even more disappointed at him. Or maybe at things that are beyond my control.

“I am gonna stay in London. No matter what. There is a friend there that can help me stay.”

Davey shared his passion for London, telling me every street and every store. His face lit up for the red velvet cupcake milkshake, and smiled in a wicked way for the famous Book Store full of porn on the underground floor.

“You see here, everything is so dead. So many years and this street still full of ugly shops. I don’t understand why Chinese have such horrible taste. Those street signs are unbearable. ”

Davey was criticizing everything that I was living in at that moment.

He wasn’t really walk alongside me but ahead of me with a fast pace.“Have you ever watched those YouTube videos? Did you know everything that we were kept from? It’s so scary.” 

I wouldn’t know of course. Youtube was already banned at that time.

That was the summer in 2014.

“How is Davey? You two never spoke that much in recent years.” My mom asked me when I got back home.

“He..Well..He is a different person now.” I reached my conclusion. “I don’t think we would be friends anymore. He is no longer a Chinese in his heart.”

“Oh.”My mom sighed a little. She always had a feeling that Davey and I would go back to being so close, and even develop something new. My mom thinks of herself as someone who accurately predicts things. I agree. She did say my dad would have a fall on business before he even started in the first place.

Davey and I had zero communication after this meeting, until February 2016 November, I received a message from him.

“I am coming back to Shanghai.”

You are about to leave the bustling Ho Chi Minh City for a relaxing getaway to Mekong Delta – home to natural sights and on-the-water lifestyle. You are uncertain as what to wear to feel comfortable when you visit around the Delta. This article isn’t going to help your itinerary go smoothly, it will help you wear the right clothes when going to the Mekong. For the question “Does Mekong Delta have a dress code?”, I flat-out shook my head NO. You are jolly free to wear what you feel at ease and confident in. From what I have learnt as a native Vietnamese, T-shirts, tank-tops, shorts, thin skirts, pants should be high on your list of priorities. My article below is about clothes you should and shouldn’t wear to the Mekong Delta to help you feel comfortable and safe on your trip.

Clothes you should avoid

Mekong Delta has a tropical monsoon climate which is hot and cool all year round. Make sure you wave bye-bye to thick, warm clothes such as hoodies, heavyweight jackets and coats intended for SaPa or DaLat. You can just bring along a lightweight jacket to shelter you from scorching hot sun in the day time. You don’t want to sweat buckets with clothes sticking to you like Scotch tape, do you? I highly recommend you should wear linen, moisture-wicking or quick-dry fabric. These types of clothes help move your sweat to the outer surface, avoiding the clammy feeling.

Also, you’d best not be seen in light-colored and expensive clothes. Because when you weave through the jungle or get on the boat to explore floating markets, your light-colored clothes will get dirty with mud and stains. For these activities, make friends with neutral colors but not dark colors which easily absorb sunlight.

Sandals and sporty dark-colored shoes should be preferred to high-heels. Why? Coming to the Mekong Delta, you will go on and off boat a lot. Wearing high-heels will make you easily trip and fall over if you aren’t careful. To be honest, I could have had a lot of trouble if I hadn’t had a friend who was raised in this region of Vietnam. She became my guru for my first trip that makes my vacation an unforgettable and flawless one.

Can I wear shorts, bare shoulders?

The answer is “OKEY-DOKEY” unless you pay a visit to pagodas, temples and other solemn places. In all honesty, locals there are very friendly, easy-going and genuinely interested in visitors. You’ll be wholeheartedly received even when you have shorts or bare shoulders on. But it would be super nice of you to pay respect to the land of religion and history by wearing a little bit more formal than usual.

For this, you can wear long pants, jeans, shorts or long-sleeved T-shirts (no shoulders and knees revealed). Growing up a native Vietnamese, I get used to pants and long jeans every time I go out. It saves me from skin burns because Vietnam is synonymous with hot and humid weather. Also, these types of garments can partially block you from mosquitoes and other insects hovering around at night.

How about valuable accessories (rings, watches, bracelets,...)?

You can but as little as possible. The first reason is that your accessories may drop into the water because the life here is surrounded mostly by water. The second one is that without many valuable accessories, you can easily mix in with the nature and locals there.

You can still have you wedding rings or watches on if you don’t want to take them off. You just need to pay attention to them and keep them safe and sound. That’s it! Plus, it is not a half bad idea if you bring along a scarf, a hat and a pair of glasses. These kinds of accessories not only help you to avoid harsh sunlight in the day time but also to make your outfit look nicer.

What to wear to Mekong Delta if it is going to rain?

It is going to rain if you are visiting Southern Vietnam in between May and November. If you aren’t sure about the weather in Vietnam, you can find and read some articles on the best time to visit Vietnam before you embark. Farmers in the Mekong Delta are happy with the rainy season because their rice fields can get abundant nutrients during this time. Visitors, do not. Be sure to go online to check the weather forecast before planning your trip if you want to avoid rain.

Here is another trick for you from a native Vietnamese and a visitor who has explored the Mekong Delta before. If you intend to take along a small backpack or a cross-bag, you could slip a back-up pair of sandals and a small foldable umbrella inside. In case it rains, the pair of sandals will save you from getting dirty and the umbrella will protect you from getting wet.Also, raincoats are sold in every general store for you to find easily (10-15.000 dong/ per regular type and 60-100.000 dong/ per high quality type)

Ao Ba Ba - another option for an authentic feel

If you want to look like a real Vietnamese local, have a crack at the traditional “Ao Ba Ba” – a traditional set of clothes with a silk pair of pants and a collarless long-sleeve shirt. This type of garment is very loose and comfortable for you to explore the delta while wearing. You can buy it at any small store or shopping center when you come to Vietnam. You will look even more Vietnamese if you match the set of clothes with a checkered scarf and a conical hat. There are two color options of the Ao Ba Ba for you to choose from: dark and bright colors. The dark ones (brown, black, grey, etc.) are for daily working, the colorful ones (red, green, blue, pink, etc.) are for special festivals when you visit the Mekong Delta during a Vietnamese traditional holiday. Visitors in the picture below looks really nice and comfy in the combo Ao Ba Ba and conical hats, don’t they?

What else should I take along to the Mekong Delta?

There are four things you can pack with you when coming to the Mekong Delta that will be helpful for your trip. The first one is anti-mosquitoes cream to protect you from being bitten. The Mekong has a lot of mosquitoes which can be really irritating at night. The next recommendation would be Allergy medicine if you suffer from any food allergies. This is a good one to remember as Vietnames culture in general is not very aware of food allergies. A waterproof bag for your camera, smartphone, or any other electronic device is my next recommendation. The trip is gonna feature sometime on a boat if you go to the floating market, and this bag might be a real life saver.

Last but not least, high SPF lotion to take care of your skin is a must for a more pleasant experience. If you forget, don’t worry, you can buy them at any brick-and-mortar stores right in the Delta. Anyway, wish you a safe and sound trip to our beautiful and abundant Mekong Delta.
