i already read all this for the nth time and i am not liking it (though some of you may like it so here you go)
(this was rushed and definitely all ooc soooo... i apologize for that)
Tumblr media
10/16/23 | content below... multiple, randomly-selected BSD characters pat your head/ruffle your hair/pet you/touch your hair/etc. warnings... lowercase writing, obvious out of character-ness, no dialogue, your hair is often complimented and/or stared at lol sorry.
Tumblr media
atsushi's hand ghosts over your head, hesitant to whether should he touch your head of hair or not. still uncertain yet he ends up placing his hand on your hair, gently ruffling it as he run his fingers through your locks. he admires how your hair shines beneath the sunset's vibrant orange golden-like beams through the pane of glasses behind your desk, and ponders to himself how pretty your hair is. he's glad you're the only one's left in the office this evening unless he'd want to be teased.
Tumblr media
in a dim alleyway, you sat on a crate with one leg up and your arm resting on its knee with only hirotsu there as your partner from the mission that'd already had been taken care of fairly quick. the faint smell of smoke isn't at all mistaken, coming from the cigarette that he lit up with a lighter which he already had hid. his back leaned on the wall, stood beside the crate you sat on, as his subconsciously lets his arm raise and briefly pat you on the head.
Tumblr media
he extends his open palm as a helping hand to your kneeling figure on the training ground's floor. he patiently waits with the expression of stoic still while you inhale breaths of air from exhaustion, then you eventually let yourself get pulled up to your feet with your hand in his. staring at your now messy hair with narrowed eyes, tetchou decides to fix your hair for you as his fingers delicately smooth over stray strands and tuck locks of it behind your ears.
Tumblr media
letting herself get comfortable, teruko merely sat on your shoulders with her smaller-sized hands on your head as you check over reports that happened in the past week. her gloved fingers gripped your hair for a second before relaxing, then deciding to mess with it for the purpose of playfulness, boredom, and for entertainment of your reaction.
Tumblr media
kunikida was in the infirmary room beside your unconscious form after a certain mission went wrong on your end. he closes his notebook to look over at your current state, the stern expression giving away his concern. studying you, he merely fixes the misplaced hair on your face before going back to write in his book.
Tumblr media
the obvious unsolved caculations on the white board gave away the reason why kajii had seemed so down, unable to solve whatever he was planning to do next—possibly involving the lemon bombs. you stood there as you solved the problem in your mind beforehand then telling him the solution. he immediately sprouted from the position he'd previously been in—having had his head in his arms whilst he rests on his lab's counter—and went over to you to ruffle your head in an almost rapidly manner before going over to put the solution to the problem he'd been attempting to solve.
Tumblr media
smoke flows past his parted lips while he waits for your arrival, holding his pipe between his fingers and watches the faint smoke in the air float about before vanishing. ayatsuji eventually spots you approaching him—to solve another case as a detective—he merely nods his head just a bit before briefly patting your head as he went past your form, anticipating for you to catch up.
Tumblr media
tanizaki finds himself beside you while silently listening to the words as you read the story aloud for him to hear. he was more focused to hear till the end of the book before he caught sight of your droopy eyes, threatening to close any second from lack of sleep. without hesitation, he wraps his arm around your head and lets you rest on his shoulder, gently running his hand over your hair before closing the book—bookmarking it beforehand—then placing it on your lap. he admires his surroundings, deciding to stay like this for a while.

An interesting thing to note in regards to the Akutagawa-Tanizaki debate: their viewpoints were likely somewhat influenced by the styles of traditional vs. Western literature. Akutagawa Ryuunosuke tended to be more faithful to the emotional and abstract style of Japanese literature— whereas at the time of this debate, Tanizaki Jun'ichirou was deep in his fascination with the West, which is associated with stories that have more focus on a structured plot by comparison.
The interesting thing about this is that, later in life, Tanizaki-sensei would undergo a "Return from the West", in which his fascination with the West dwindled, and he became more invested in traditional Japanese aesthetics. In a roundabout way, the real life counterparts of Tanizaki and Akutagawa went from being at odds, to ultimately coming to an agreement— though Akutagawa-sensei passed away before he could witness Tanizaki-sensei's change of heart.
In regards to BSD, this could be paralleled with Tanizaki (the bsd character) leaving the Agency, whose members are authors who leaned more towards a Westernized style of writing, and transferring to the Port Mafia, which is composed of authors who were more loyal to the more traditional, abstract/emotional style of literature. But who knows, maybe Asagiri will surprise us.

Note
who do you think will join the port mafia?
thank you for the question, anon!
i’m not entirely sure which ada member will be transferred to the port mafia, but i do believe this is best determined through the process of elimination.
the preface this, i am ruling out the clerks, as i don’t believe they would be beneficial to the port mafia. it would be quite unproductive of mori to choose one of them. (unless he chooses naomi to force tanizaki’s hand? though i don’t particularly believe in that theory.)
okay, let’s begin.
core agents:
while mori does want a member, this is not to the agency’s detriment. therefore, the pillar members are very unlikely to be chosen—these members being fukuzawa, ranpo, yosano, and kunikida. we can effectively rule them out as follows: fukuzawa’s ability maintains stability within the ada, ranpo’s deduction isn’t suited for a mafioso, yosano has been deemed off-limits, and kunikida is fukuzawa’s successor.
kyouka:
another agent who i believe is unlikely to be chosen is kyouka, as kouyou and mori have both shown to be impressed by her resolve to better herself, and i can’t imagine them forcing her back into the mafia after all of that growth. kouyou especially—she has given up on trying to take kyouka back, and is actively trying to keep her from the port mafia now.
as for members who are possible contenders, we are left with dazai, tanizaki, atsushi, and kenji.
atsushi:
i don’t really believe they will choose atsushi. to my knowledge, he still requires all men are equal to have full control over his ability, and if he were to leave the agency, fukuzawa’s ability would no longer have an effect on him. he has been training, but i don’t think he’s had enough time to master byakko yet.
however, i could see why he would be chosen from a narrative standpoint. it would provide the audience a new perspective, and allow further development for many characters. we cannot entirely rule him out, especially since the port mafia has been gunning for him since day one (though that was due to a contract from the guild. still, i suppose it stands.)
dazai:
i’d hope mori wouldn’t pick dazai, though, i have seen some compelling arguments as to why he may be chosen. in forcing dazai out of the port mafia, mori has shown to hold some regret, despite having chosen the “optimal solution”.
there is also the case of potential foreshadowing in the osamu dazai and the dark era light novel, with mori saying to odasaku, “…dazai’s capabilities are astounding. i’m sure in four or five years, he’ll have killed me and taken my place.” this takes place when dazai was eighteen, which would place him at around twenty-two or twenty-three.
all things considered, i don’t think it’ll be him. dazai has made too many strides toward fulfilling his promise to odasaku for mori to take him back now, and in disrupting that, i believe there would only be a severe backlash. i think mori will keep dazai’s executive position open and available to him, not force him back into it.
this leaves us with two possible agents: jun'ichirou and kenji. i have seen extensive reasoning as to why either of them may be chosen, and to be honest, i’m quite conflicted myself.
kenji:
kenji’s ability would be very useful to the port mafia, but his naïveté might be a disadvantage. he also may fall under the same category as atsushi in not being able to maintain full control over his ability without fukuzawa, but he has been shown to have precautions in place, so i cannot confirm that he needs the safety net. he is certainly a valuable asset to both organizations, and i don’t believe he would be opposed so long as he is protecting the agency.
tanizaki:
tanizaki has been the fan favorite for “most likely to be transferred over”, and i can’t say i disagree. initially, he was my pick as well. it has been foreshadowed multiple times, with hirotsu claiming his ability is suited for assassination, to tanizaki attempting to kill mori, and even jun'ichirou outright volunteering himself in yosano’s place. he has been shown to not be opposed to killing so long as he is protecting naomi and his friends. this idea is expanded on in the third light novel, untold origins of the detective agency.
“…tanizaki felt he was mediocre at his job, held mediocre principles, and had a mediocre sense of justice…”
i believe that he very well may be chosen, as this would provide him the development which his character has been severely lacking.
however, i wouldn’t put it past asagiri to disregard those statements entirely and find a way to surprise us—it’s just what he does lol.

Weak Hero - Superpower/Magic AU
I wanted to imagine some of the Weak Hero characters with superpowers/magic! My first instinct was actually more like "super strength for Ben, etc" but then I thought to myself, "ok but Ben already has super strength, more or less". So I deliberately picked broader, more fantasy-esque powers, rather than something specific that's based off of what the character can already do. I just think it's really interesting to imagine if these characters had magical abilities in addition to—that complement—their existing fighting styles.
Gray Yeon - Illusion Creation
(insp. Tanizaki Jun'ichirou from Bungou Stray Dogs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gray would be an absolute beast with an illusion ability. I think it would play off of his unassuming appearance as well— illusionists are often underestimated in a fight, because they rely on trickery to win. Both the ability to conceal his location, and mentally intimidate his opponent would be at Gray's disposal. He can hide in plain sight, create clones of himself, and conjure terrifying imagery.
Ben Park - Earth Manipulation
(insp. Earthbenders from Avatar)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben is already associated with a lot of earthy motifs in the series, I think it would make sense for him to have the ability to pelt people with actual boulders, not just his fists that feel like boulders :). Moreover, he'd be able to defend his own body using rock walls, or upset his opponent(s) footing by shaking the ground beneath their feet. Also, it fits his personality too, he's straightforward/blunt, headstrong, maybe a little dumb as a rock, and he is also someone that other people relies on.
Gerard Jin - Plant Manipulation
(insp. Warrod Sequen from Fairy Tail)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one is a bit obvious, maybe, but I do think it would be really cool. I think Gerard would be able to grow vines/branches to restrict his opponent's movement, as well as boost his own mobility. Also Gerard strikes me as a bit of a green thumb as well. I think this power would also suit him in the aspect that it's less combat-oriented/aggressive compared to the others. Gerard spends more of his time on his hobbies, than he does getting into fistfights, and the plant theme reflects that, Gerard with a lil' flower garden.
Jake Ji - Electricity Manipulation
(insp. Killua Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly made this post just so I could share my "Jake with lightning magic" agenda. Particularly, with the added benefit of giving himself superspeed + reflexes, and just generally throwing thunderbolts around? I just think Jake would look really cool with this power, and it would complement his fighting style really well. It's fast and efficient, and maybe a little bit on the flashy side as well, which suits Jake as a person too.
Wolf Keum - Fire Manipulation
(insp. Suoh Mikoto from K-Project)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Initially, I had brainstormed Wolf as an unconventional healer, who uses his magic to heal his own injuries. Then, I thought that's pretty uninteresting, because he already kinda fights as if his injuries don't exist, and I wanted to pick something cool. Pyrokinesis is kinda self explanatory, and there's not much you can do with it in terms of using it creatively (as opposed to say, earth magic for defense, or lightning magic for superspeed). It's literally point, shoot, destroy— which is perfect for Wolf. Also it suits his personality: he's got a short, volatile temper, and a violent streak. Also I really wanted to make that Suoh Mikoto comparison.
Donald Na - Shadow Manipulation
(insp. Pride/Selim from Fullmetal Alchemist)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Donald being able to use darkness as a weapon is absolutely terrifying. I imagine him with tendrils of shadow that just creep out of nowhere and can choke the target, or stab/slice the target, or just be used to restrict an opponent's movement. Darkness manipulation is a super versatile power and I think Donald could make the most out of it. It also works perfectly with Donald being weak to bright light.

what better way to procrastinate than to write random stuff
reviewing the works that the abilities were based on
Part 1: Armed Detective Agency
I just realized that I've finally read all the works attributed to the abilities of the author's BSD counterparts, at least for the ADA. I plan to do this for all organizations in the BSD universe so I can direct my reading and actually finish something HAHA
DISCLAIMER: I am not an expert on literature, let alone Japanese literature, and my short reviews are solely my opinion as a casual reader. These are all for fun so please don't take these so seriously!
Nakajima Atsushi Ability: Beast Beneath the Moonlight Original Work: Moon Over the Mountain
This short story has the vibes of a folktale but with existential dread sprinkled throughout. The prose is calm but the agony still reverberates. I liked this more than I though I would, perhaps because of how clean it felt. Honestly this would be one of the OG works I'd recommend to a BSD fan who wants to try classic Japanese literature.
Dazai Osamu Ability/Original Work: No Longer Human
This is probably the one novel/work most BSD fans would pick up first - and for a good reason. The themes are pretty universal albeit heavy, the tone of the narrator throughout the entire novel is gripping, the translation by Donald Keene is very readable, and it's just in the most general sense a summary of Dazai-sensei's own life. The last point must be taken with a grain of salt, however, as he's a master liar - something you'll find out if you dig more into his life and other works. If you'd like to see depression in book form, this is for you.
Kunikida Doppo Ability: Doppo Poet Original Work: Doppo Collection (probably)
Here's a case of "I can't really find the original work so I'll be reviewing something else instead"
Reviewing: Those Unforgettable People
I chose to talk about this one since it's the one found in the Penguin Anthology. It's an interesting mix of forms: technically, it's a short story. However, the elements of poetry and even of the essay are present - mostly the latter, tbh. Of course the whole "ideal" thing is such a Kunikida-sensei thing that it appears it almost every story he wrote, yet somehow in this one you'll have to squint a little bit more to see it. The point of this story-essay-poem thing is at the very end (the first half is quite dragging imo) is what gives it a little oomph, but honestly I much prefer his other works (specifically Old Gen and Death).
Tanizaki Jun'ichirou Ability/Original Work: Sasameyuki
You like a slow burn? You like pain? Familial drama? Maybe you'll like this. Maybe you won't. It's a mammoth of a book that feels like a series of extremely detailed telenovela episodes - not that it's necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed it despite the length because the way it ends, although hardly strong at all, ties the themes and messages of the novel cleanly into a single scene.
Miyazawa Kenji Ability/Original Work: Be Not Defeated by the Rain
It's a poem every Japanese elementary student would know. The message and style is so simple yet beautiful (I read Sulz's translation). It's joyful and so sunny... until I read the background on it. I cried over his work. Again. (Night on the Galactic Railroad PLS) Man I just love this author so much. But I'm not really a poem person to begin with, so take this review with a grain of salt HAHA
Yosano Akiko Ability/Original Work: Thou Shalt Not Die
The only complete translation I could find is written in painfully archaic English, so I won't comment on the style HAHA. But I do think the original was just as pointed in its words and message; its anti-war sentiments and middle finger to the Japanese emperor and military (at the time) so characteristically Yosano-sensei. It's sad she'd support WW2 later on - come on sensei WHY
Personally, however, I prefer her shorter poems, specifically the ones from River of Stars. But I'm not really a poem person to begin with, so take this review with a grain of salt HAHA
Izumi Kyouka Ability: Demon Snow Original Work: Demon Pond
It's been a while since I've read a play, and perhaps that's why I had a hard time getting through the first half - either that or it was quite lackluster as most of the actual story happens in the second half. Its influences from folktales and traditional Japanese theater (i.e. kabuki and noh) are very apparent - I wish I could have seen it instead of read it because of that. I think this is the first work of Kyouka's that I actually liked (I've read some of his short stories and one of his other plays) so I'll definitely recommend this one if you want to start with this author. There's also a movie adaptation of it that I haven't watched yet (but I do plan to). I think it could be much better than just reading it as is because of the visuals and mood setting, but a review on that soon. Maybe.
Fukuzawa Yukichi Ability: All Men Are Created Equal Original Work: An Encouragement of Learning (Sec. 1-2)
I couldn't be bothered to read the whole thing, but the essence of the ability only comes from the first two sections (which I'll be reviewing).
It's an essay that imo serves as a good introduction to Fukuzawa's philosophy. His views and arguments are built primarily on morality with logic acting mostly as a way to expound on his points. It's interesting, nothing really new for a contemporary reader, but at least it gives a nice background on the changing environment during the early years of Meiji-era Japan. Of course there are personal biases here (specifically the one with China - one of the greatest criticisms against Fukuzawa, even though he was supposedly progressive for his time) but imo that reflects some views of many Japanese at the time - not that they're right, of course.
But what about our special non-gifted boi?
I guess let's look at what one of the episodes was based on instead lol
Edogawa Ranpo Episode: The Murder on D. Street (S01E05) Original Work: The Case on D. Hill
I will tell you now: they have almost NO similarities whatsoever. Doesn't mean it's bad tho...
Okay ngl I was pretty disappointed HAHA. It's the same type of disappointment I had with Poe's Murders on the Rue Morgue (which was ironically referenced in the story) but it at least had some sense to it. I blame myself for not seeing it coming tho, given that this story is very typical of Edogawa-sensei. If you do plan to read it, however, be warned that there are implicit (?) themes that may be uncomfortable for some readers (this warning applies to most of Edogawa-sensei's work not made specifically for children HAHA).

a/n: inspired by real-life events HAHA taglist: @irethepotato, @kisara-16reblogs, @stygianoir
seeing you in your house clothes for the first time
featuring: Tanizaki, Atsushi, Akutagawa x GN!Reader
Tanizaki Jun'ichirou
He dropped by your place since you were sick and he brought some food (mostly soup) to help you feel better soon
If it weren't for Naomi pushing him he might not have been knocking at your door. He's too embarrassed at the thought of seeing you so vulnerable
After you finally opened the door, the sight of your limp and weak body made him forget all his silly worries
"Y/N-san you could have called any of us earlier!"
He immediately heats up your food at helps you lie down again in your bed, prepares a wet towel and even checks your temperature
"Calm down, Tanizaki-kun. It's not like I'm dying..."
He only manages to calm down once you start eating. He watches you as you slowly lift up your spoon and carefully chew your food. Even if it's silent and repetitive, for some reason he couldn't stop watching. It's almost mesmerizing.
You're still pretty when you're sick, he thought
That's when he suddenly becomes lowkey agitated again. Why did he have to notice just how well you look in your house clothes? Did you look good just because of the clothes themselves or was it because you just seemed so relaxed?
His heart begins to beat hard in shame. Now was not the time to be fantasizing about being with you-
"Thanks for the help"
Your grateful smile was enough to put him at ease once more. It didn't take long before you dozed off again. You did need to get as much well-needed rest as you could.
After cleaning your utensils he gazes at your sleeping form, admiring everything about you once again. How he wishes he could see this more often...
Nakajima Atsushi
It was your day off but the ADA needed some items sent to your place immediately, so they sent Atsushi to do it for them
He agrees to the errand without thinking twice. Sure, he's a bit flustered since he's going to your place for the first time, but he's there for business so he's not too embarrassed
Until he sees you in your very comfortable clothes.
"Thanks for carrying them all the way here! If you're not busy, you should rest here for a bit."
His cheeks immediately redden the moment he lays his eyes on you and they only become redder as you insist he come inside
In his heart he wants to go in but it feels like he's taking advantage of the situation so he keeps on refusing. Of course, he gives in eventually
He's stiffly sitting in front of the hot tea you made for him as you ask about the Agency and other matters; one thing goes in one ear then out the other.
His answers are short or sometimes rambling, other times he stammers and gets even more flustered than he already was.
Was it wrong to feel so casual around you like this? Was it wrong to want to feel like this around you?
Your bare face and unstyled hair was what caught him off guard the most. This is what boyfriends are lucky to see with their partners, right? So this is like a free trial of sorts-
"Ah, sorry for holding you here too long. Kunikida-san's going to look for you soon."
Honestly, he forgot about work lol
Since then he always offered to drop by your place if needed (not that he needed to initiate it - he's assigned to it because everyone but you knows his little secret)
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke
He was walking along the sidewalk when a familiar voice calls him
"Akutagawa-san, is that you?"
It didn't click in his head that it was you standing in front of him, carrying a plastic bag full of convenience store goods.
"...I'm not bothering you, am I?"
"No, no you're not."
It was just that the idiot was too stunned to speak. First of all, he didn't expect to see you of all people at this hour of the night. And second, he never thought he'd see you is such... comfortable attire.
It was strange to see you like this. You just looked so ordinary - which isn't a bad thing, by the way - and for some reason, more "attainable" in his eyes
"You want a drink?" you said as you handed a can to him
He coughs to hide his slowly reddening face, but accepts the kind gesture anyway.
Before his brain could finally process this sight in front of him, you were already about to leave
"...should I walk you home?"
His offer caught the both of you by surprise. He didn't know that he wanted to be with you this much to blurt out something so bold; why did he not be more prudent when he's out and about because of work? Did he really want to bask in your laid-back aura as much as possible?
To his one question (and perhaps all the ones after), you answered a big fat yes
You were blabbering about the whole time, but he didn't mind. In fact it made him feel at ease. Also, knowing more about your lifestyle was a bonus for him
Believe it or not he does enjoy the walks home since it's one of the few things he and Gin get to do together. He just never imagined he'd experience the same pleasure in doing the same thing with you.

for the character ask game: naomi bsd and/or frog girl from bnha 💕
hiiiiii ilyyyyyyyy mwah <333
tanizaki naomi:
first impression: oh dear god. not another teruhashi makoto. pls. noooooo. also erica lindbeck i love youuuuu
impression now: oH MY GOD SHE DESERVES BETTER they are just siblings SHE IS SO SMART AND STRONG AND SNEAKY AND SUPER DOPE ALSO ERICA LINDBECK ILY
favorite moment: either when she sassed fitzgerald or when she and haruno were running away from steinbeck and lovecraft and she was kind of taking charge and being all dope!!!
idea for a story: ummm i already wrote my main one, but i'd like to do like... idk a naomi & ranpo bonding fic or a jun'ichirou creates the illusion and like the story on how that happened and yada yada yada or like something with the line, "you can't kill me. i'm not alive" but i don't have Any ideas for that lol
unpopular opinion: she is a relevant character and is under-utilized and is SO interesting and people should just ignore the i.ncest stuff bc they're either pretending they're siblings or just siblings who are super close toe ach other bc naomi is dead and when jun'ichirou remade her with light snow, his yearning to be with her again or to hug her again manifested in her illusion being super clingy--
favorite relationship: romantic? none. platonic? i love her relationship with haruno, and also i think that she and ranpo are besties!!! i wrote a whole fic about it lol bc like... idk just the idea of naomi being light snow and ranpo knowing but not being able to do anything about it and having to accept it even though they don't know how and then avoiding her bc they don't understand and then find naomi scary but then they find out that she's actually a huge gossip and sneaky and will do silly things with them--
favorite headcanon: she's dead, actually <333 she died in an earth quake and she's just an advanced illusion from light snow <333 also she and ranpo are gossip besties, sometimes including dazai <333
asui tsuyu:
first impression: OH MY GOD GRACE WILL LOVE HER SO SO SO MUCH HOLY TRASH!!! FROG!!! ELDEST DAUGHTER!!! n e ways never knew that was a quirk - that's freaking DOPE man!!!
impression now: frog is still a DOPE quirk and also i love her and she deserves to be happy and safe and to curl up in a lil heated blanket during the winter with a cup of something warm
favorite moment: tbh i liked the moment when she was like "yo let's Not go after bakugou" like not bc i don't think he deserved to be rescued by his classmates, but bc like. that was brave of her, ya know? and like i GET it. she doesn't want anyone else to get hurt and she doesn't want to ignore what the teachers said. it's like. she knows they're all still kids and that they shouldn't have to do that kind of stuff yet, you know?
idea for a story: ummmm idk if i have any ideas right now off the top of my head, but i think a tsu eldest sibling story would be DOPE and would be really fun to write tbh and like... how being the eldest sibling shows when they live in the dorms
unpopular opinion: uhhh idk if i know any like... REALLY popular tsu headcanons? i do know that i don't ship them with tokoyami, but that's the best i can give ya
favorite relationship: uhh i don't have any romantic relationship headcanons for her tbh. but i do love her friendship with the dekusquad
favorite headcanon: idk tsu's gender, but they certainly aren't cis lol, also she is on the arospec <333 also i like to think she's good at staring at people. like... making them feel uneasy under their GAZE lol
let me scream about blorbos tehe?

Any favorite books? ✨🍃 (thank you!!)
i don't really do favourites anymore, but kawakami hiromi and yoshida shuuichi are two authors whose writing i enjoy very much. both are sad but healing at the same time. unfortunately not a lot of it has been translated to english or other languages. :( yokomichi yonosuke by yoshida shuuichi has been made into a movie that has an international release, please do go give it a try if you have a chance! it boasts my favourite coming out scene in fiction. the main character tags along his friend to a park at night uninvited and the friend is like dude why can you not take a hint i am gay and here to hook up (this takes place in the 80s) and the main character is like whoa there that means my presence is ruining your gay time but don't worry i'll sit and wait on this bench eating this watermelon while you go and enjoy yourself to which the friend is like i have never been so turned off in my life let's just go back. i just love that book so much!!!! it's so funny and sad and healing and wise and good. many of the authors i like haven't been translated at all. :(
as for classics ningen shikkaku/no longer human by dazai osamu and sasameyuki/the makioka sisters by tanizaki jun'ichirou are dear to me! i actually picked up sasameyuki recently for a reread because of what's happening in the world.
sadly i don't really read non-japanese literature these days because of lack of availability. partly also because i'm just better at reading japanese than english as far as fiction goes lol. i love finnish language poetry too but not much of it has been translated either. my favourite poet is arto melleri because he has written like ten of my ultimate most beloved poems. right now i love his verse aina olen ylistänyt teitä joilta ei ole paluuta, mutta illan valossa siivilöityvä suru ei ole enää kenenkään omaa (i have always so sang the praises of roads with no return but sorrow filtered through twilight no longer belongs to anyone in particular)
in short, i am the worst person to ask this question haha.
