Overlord movie review: Kind of disappointed because my friends told me it was similar to Nazi Zombies of the Call of Duty franchise. There was only a single zombie-type that made an appearance. Also, I thought the movie would have the traditional zombie stereotype, but not quite so much. However, I do love the setting and felt very fitting. Even though it did not involve zombies, it had the vibe and atmosphere of it. The story was decent, nothing over the top. The graphics were decent as well. There were some CGI where it was meh and obvious. Though the explosion does seem authentic, especially the end. I really like the cast, too! It had some familiar faces from Game of Thrones and Agents of SHIELD, but they had limited screentime which sucks in my opinion. OVERLORD (2018) Quand J.J. Abrams peut se faire plaisir avec sa société de production Bad Robot, il le fait, et mise du coup sur OVERLORD, film de guerre à tendance horrifique réalisé par Julius Avery -son second long-métrage après SON OF A GUN (2014)-: on se retrouve donc parachutés pendant le célèbre et violent débarquement en Normandie lors de la seconde guerre mondiale, suivant un groupe de soldats à qui l’on a attribué une mission spéciale. On le sent et on le sait, le scénario va se diriger vers les tristes expérimentations nazies pour ajouter ce cachet fantastico-horrifique dont il a besoin: si sur le papier OVERLORD ressemble de loin à une fusion de DEAD SNOW (2009) et de SAVE PRIVATE RYAN (1998), le fait est que le film se démarque à lui seul des clichés que pourrait véhiculer n’importe quel mode "Nazi Zombies” de tout jeu vidéo CALL OF DUTY. Ce n’est pas du nazi-zombie donc, malgré l’évident parallèle: sinon, on apprécie que le personnage principal soit un jeune Noir tiré de sa Louisiane et plongé dans l’enfer de la guerre, et qu’un autre personnage badass sorte du lot en la personne de cette villageoise qui n’hésitera pas à jouer du lance-flamme vêtue de sa robe. Évitant le stéréotype du capitaine beau gosse qui s’embarque dans une mission suicide, OVERLORD nous parachute brutalement au-dessus du champ de bataille, avec une séquence “réaliste” de chute libre mémorable: le long-métrage s’ouvre presque ainsi, les soldats devant survivre jusqu’à leur objectif. Puis leur mission les mènera dans un mystérieux labo souterrain où Fritz & Co. s’amusent à injecter des sérums confirmant les plans inhumains d’un Reich se voulant millénaire... Classique mais efficace, OVERLORD dispose bien des moyens qu’il lui faut tout en restant humble: ce n’est pas un blockbuster, donc c’est pas mal gore, mais néanmoins bien réalisé et interprété, quelques scènes viscérales -au sens propre ou figuré- nous mettant la dose de pression ou d’adrénaline nécessaires. Les moyens de J.J. Abrams sont là -sans lens-flare ni aucune autre aberration optique chère au réal’ avant son STAR WARS - THE FORCE AWAKENS (2015)-, permettant aux SFX -très réussis- et VFX de nous happer dans ce baroud d’honneur involontaire, véritable plaisir coupable généreux en litres de sang et en bidoche. Plus comme si les jeux WOLFENSTEIN rencontraient une narration à la DOG SOLDIERS (2002) -l’humour en moins, la tension d’OVERLORD ne plaisantant pas avec l’ennemi à la croix gammée-: peu surprenant mais assez jouissif, on aime et apprécie ce film qu’on réclame depuis longtemps, porté par ce premier essai destiné ) perdurer. Cette nouvelle franchise bourrine n’a hélas pas rencontré le succès, l’année 2018 étant trop chargée en super-héros et en revivals des grands noms de l’horreur: on aurait tort de dénigrer OVERLORD, qui fait ce qu’on lui demande, et bien. On n’oublie pas le rythme construit ni ces scènes d’anthologie de violence et de sang, qui confirment que le long-métrage vaut le coup, équilibrant ses phases de guerre/d’action/de gore avec justesse: qui n’aime pas casser du zombie-nazi -même si on ne peut accorder ce statut au film-? car OVERLORD ne manque pas de style, ni de balls. Rattrapez-vous en visionnant cet agréable entre-deux plus que valable, ou mieux achetez le blu-ray pour le faire! WOLFENSTEIN ORIGINS /20

Julius Avery - Overlord (2018) A fun film that feels very inspired by pre-code comics, computer games and other nice things and which basically boils down to "Zombie Nazis". The brilliant thing about it is that there's few things more satisfying to see getting their ass kicked than Nazis and Zombies. That's precisely why so many shooting games feature them as enemies, and there's very much a Castle Wolfenstein feel to the whole film which is nostalgic. Also, weirdly, it feels somewhat political to have a film where Nazis get blown to bits. This film returns us to the good old days of World War II films where killing Nazis was an unequivocal good thing, and that makes my antifa person feel all warm inside. The film itself has a somewhat predictable plot which works with a game-logic of inching towards the final boss, in a way that reminds me of other satisfyingly violent films like The Raid and Dredd 3D. However, the film is full of amazing special effects, from battle scenes to gruesome monsters and a couple of worthy jump scares. If the bad guys are cartoon villains, the same isn't true about the heroes, which are interestingly complex and well acted. All in all good time for the whole family, gruesome monsters and plenty of gore. Watch it. Smith Overlord¨ is the rare hybrid of a WWII film and a zombie horror - kind of movies that were prosperous back in 1970s and early 1980s, but has been long gone since then. And even in those times most of them were cheap and cheesy exploitation films, full of gore and nudity. (And yes, lots of people nowadays will think not of grindhouse cinema, but rather of ¨Call Of Duty¨ or ¨Wolfenstein¨ game series, which is an obvious point of reference here.) And ¨Overlord¨ nearly creates a perfection in assembling those pieces of a Nazi zombie horror movies into one single story. The plot is simple, action-packed and has it all: lots of fighting, shootings, machine guns and flamethrowers. The characters are schematic, almost one-dimensional, because it's not WWII drama, and that's enough. The SFX are great, there's a lot of blood and guts here, exactly what one can expect from a film which involves Nazis, experiments with (un)dead, and covert military operation. ¨Overlord¨ is the Nazispoltation at it’s best: dark, bloody, action-driven horror about zombie soldiers trying to take over the world. Take it for what it is, and have fun.
