After my favorite books of the year, here is my list of favorite audiobooks. Even if I didn't listen to as many as in 2021, it was a very good year. Quality over quantity.

A little something different!
I used to be a TOTAL bookworm as a kid, then sort of lost it for a decade or so, then in about 2016/17 I decided to start reading more (& also moved closer to a library & got in the habit of using it).
Fast forward 7ish years and I'm back in the habit of reading & am devouring stacks of books per year, with 2023 being my most ridiculous one yet. I somehow ended up reading 120 books? Mostly because I'm terrible at managing my library holds list & kept getting stacks of books I really wanted to read (I'm also lucky to be a really fast reader, which helps).
Anyways! All that to say - I compiled a top 22 + 19ish honourable mentions, as seen below:
My Top 22:
Tear – Erica Mckeen
Our Wives Under The Sea – Julia Armfield
The Vaster Wilds – Lauren Groff
Paladin’s Strength – T. Kingfisher
Paladin’s Grace – T. Kingfisher
Great Circle – Maggie Shipstead
Between Two Fires – Christopher Buehlman
Sisters – Daisy Johnson
How High We Go In The Dark – Sequoia Nagamatsu
Moon Of The Turning Leaves – Waubgeshig Rice
The Memory Police – Yoko Ogawa
The Night Ship – Jess Kidd
The Conjoined – Jen Sookfong Lee
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter – Hazel Gaynor
If An Egyptian Cannot Speak English – Noor Naga
The Annual Migration Of Clouds – Premee Mohamed
Wandering Souls – Cecile Pin
The Only Good Indians – Stephen Graham Jones
Lone Women – Victor Lavalle
Ring Shout – P. Djèlí Clark
Lucy – Jamaica Kincaid
The Bookshop Of Yesterdays – Amy Meyerson
Honourable Mentions:
The Marigold – Andrew F. Sullivan
Five Little Indians – Michelle Good
Swordheart – T. Kingfisher…and all the other books of hers (9 of them in total) I read this year!
Even Though I Knew The End – C.L. Polk
Everything Under – Daisy Johnson
Fen – Daisy Johnson
The Animals In That Country – Laura Jean Mckay
A Prayer For The Crown-Shy – Becky Chambers
The Sea Captain’s Wife – Beth Powning
Hester – Laurie Lico Albanese
Tauhou – Kotuku Titihuia Nuttall
Ducks – Kate Beaton
You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty – Akwaeke Emezi
The Hatbox Letters – Beth Powning
And Then She Fell – Alicia Elliot
The Adult – Bronwyn Fischer
Everyone Knows Your Mother Is A Witch – Rivka Galchen
Lute – Jennifer Thorne
Monster – Mariel Ashlinn Kelly
Elly Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway Series (I read 8 books from this series this yr & loved all of them!)
If you want to go through my entire list for 2023, you can read it on my website!

Personal recap GP MK John Wilson Trophy 2022 - Women FS
This is going to include some SP impressions too...I am going with the starting order of the free skate...
Julia Sauter had a much better free than SP and I think that's the best she could hope for. Beautiful costume.
Alexia Paganini - I don't know why but Alexia seems to be on an downwards spiral. It wasn't particularly bad but she lacks her old technical content and she seems to struggle with the rotations of her jumps. Also program wise there isn't much happening. She changed coaches 3 times in 3 years now...I am sure Michael Huth is a good place for her because he knows how to work with adult skaters past 20. I hope she can change it for the better soon.
Bradie Tennell - Years ago you wouldn't expect her to fall at all it happened so rarely. You really can see what injuries and lack of training do to the consistency of a skater. I really liked the program composition of the SP. The FS overvoice of Greta Thunberg creeped me out though. Vivaldi' s 4 seasons are beautiful pieces of music, you don't need a voiceover and as much as I like programs with a message, this is really not it for me to include a few sentences that have nothing to do with the music. Climate change is an important topic, but not sure that would come across without explanation and the voiceover. I think her costume is one of the most beautiful costumes this season. She just needs time to train, then I am sure we see the old Bradie. 11th place is really not something you would expect for Bradie...
Natasha McKay definitely never expected to skate in a GP but she really lived up to the homecrowd expectations in the SP. I think her SP is a really fun one that gets the crowd going and has a different style than anyone else. Stand out program. Sadly her FS didn't work as well as her SP, if you don't have the most difficult elements you have to at least be clean, but I still think looking at her story and what she has achieved over the years she can be very proud.
Gabrielle Daleman - her story has some similarities with Bradie just a much longer history of training loss and Gabby was hardly ever the most consistent skater. I admire her for still trying after all the hardships and mental illnesses she suffers from. I was delighted for her at Skate Canada in the SP and so sad to see her struggle so much in the free. It unfortunately wasn't much better here. I wish her all the best! Don't give up Gabby!
Nicole Schott was wonderful 😍😍😍 Unique arrangement for Bohemian Rhapsody, cool program! Nicole is one of the skaters that constantly progressed in her technical content. She may never reach the heights in her technical content than the top skaters but give her a few more years and she will come close. It's nice to see the opposite of most skaters who regress with age in their technical content.
Young You sadly also suffers with injuries and isn't in her peak condition, you can see it with how hesitant she is. She lacks a bit of speed and expression that she definitely normally has. It was a very good skate for her. Happy for her. ❤️ I think she is always a bit of underscored especially on jumps, but I do think that her PCS not being super high is ok for her current state. Also beautiful costume 😍 (btw the more classical skating approach to Vivaldi's 4 seasons than Bradie's though it's not the original version either)
Gabriella Izzo - those popped jumps costed a lot of points...I am not really sure what to think of her. She has nice speed across the ice and also expression is there, just dunno I am not sold on her yet...it can change though.
Ekaterina Kurakova invented the sunshine on ice. Her energy and joy is extraordinary. Wonderful musicality. Wonderful program with wonderful music from UP! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ And a clean skate!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 The winner of the hearts! ❤️ (technically she's not on par with the top skaters but everything she lacks technically she makes up in performance, if someone deserves a 10 in performance it's her!)
Anastasiia Gubanova - this was a very good skate. Strong technical content, but some URs. She is very lovely to watch. Not sold on this program though...it would need more fiery instead of lovely imo...
Isabeau Levito - beautiful skater to watch. Especially the SP had many transitions but it's a bit too like obvious not woven into the program. I don't think the SP fits her at all. I think that despite a good knee bend she doesn't accelerate speed effortlessly. I like her FS much better than the SP. It suits her style better. I think for a 15 year old she is very good I just don't think her PCS match her skating yet...she is without a doubt deserving of a medal especially in this field.
MAI MAI MAI MAI ❤️❤️❤️❤️🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Mai Mihara is such a great skater. She emoted so well in the free skate. A free skate full of attack and a contrast to that wonderful beautiful fairy like SP. So thrilled for her! She was so often overlooked in the past, underscored, left off big teams for stupid reasons! I hope this is her season to shine! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

Cousins Chapter 50
AO3
He almost passes out at seeing them. His head gets swimmy and his heart starts to pound. She smiles, her eyes full of exhaustion and joy.
“Don’t stand on ceremony Jamie. Come in and meet your children.” Her voice frees him from his paralysis and he moves to her side. The babies lay in her arms.
“Their real.” She laughs.
“I ken they are. Here papa. Hold your son and daughter.” He has held Jenny ‘s bairns, fresh from the womb. It doesn’t compare to holding his own. When his wife slips the wee things into his arms, he feels as fragile as a soap bubble ad as indestructible as Scotland, herself.
The lad is his Sassanch, from his brown hair to his round face. His eyes, though, show the slanted look of his. The lass, on the other hand, is him. From her riotous curls of red to her Viking features. “ Halo mo chlann. Is mise do athair. Tha gaol agam ort.”
He moves his eyes from one to the other, taken them both in. A son and a daughter! How incredibly blessed they are! “Shall we stay with the names we picked out?” Claire asks.
He looks up at her, his eyes a shim of tears. “Aye. Oliver McKay William.” He looks back to his son. “That be your name mo mac. Mo mighean, Elsbeth Brianna Julia. Ollie and Ellie.”
She laughs. “Lets get them properly introduced to family and baptized, before you start shorting their names.”
He chuckles. “Your mama be right. Something ye should learn right away. She usually is.” They spend the next hour bonding before more of the twins family comes to meet them.

Chaplin's The Gold Rush and How Pivotal it was to Melodramas
Julia Merolle
After watching The Gold Rush this week, it connects to the three quotes that I chose from Linda Williams, Woal and Woal, and William Paul regarding Chaplin’s artistic process through acting and directing as well as melodramas and how they allow people to cope with tragedy through humor. The quotes also connect to the power of cinema through emotions in the film, especially being a silent film.
The first quote that I picked from Linda Williams, states, “Certainly the movies, like the stage melodramas they have largely superceded, have long been a source of powerful and usually uncritical spectatorial emotions.” (Williams, Linda. 1983. Review of Cinema and Sentiment by Charles Affron.) This connects to Chaplin’s The Gold Rush is because Chaplin takes a historically tragic topic such as the Gold Rush and turns it into a comedy. For context, the Gold Rush caused lots of miners to die through explosions, electrocution, falling, slipping, inhaling dust, and suffering from lead, arsenic and mercury poisoning. Miners also died from drinking not clean water and living in maximum capacity areas. This is important because while Chaplin points out the weather that people suffered in Yukon Gold Rush in Alaska, he made the film end on a positive note where The Tramp wins the heart of Georgia and becomes a multi-millionaire by finding gold with Big Jim McKay.
The second quote, which I picked from William Paul, states, “The New York Times critic in his review of The Gold Rush was particularly impressed by Chaplin’s “acting with his back” at this moment, his ability to express loneliness through the way he held his head and shoulders. As impressive as Chaplin the actor is here, Chaplin the director also manages a high degree of expressiveness, establishing an important contrast between the two key elements of the image.” (William Paul. 1972. “The Gold Rush.” Film Comment). This quote also connects to Chaplin’s The Gold Rush because Chaplin’s character as The Tramp really carried the film as a whole. We see that he falls in love with Georgia, while also finally teaming up with Big Jim at the end of the film in order to become a multi-millionaire. Chaplin really conveys the emotion of the seriousness of the Yukon Gold Rush by the desperate need for money, through eating shoes, and waiting in a cabin throughout a blizzard, to get gold that is nearby. Even showing Black Larsen, who ends up dying from an avalanche, in the process of leaving with gold, shows how difficult the struggle was to get money, yet he turns the situations into a comedy. He does this through the different ways The Tramp eats his own shoe, to the chase between Big Jim and The Tramp because Big Jim pictures The Tramp as a chicken.
The last quote, which I picked from Woal and Woal, states, “Relating how his funniest scenes in The Gold Rush (1925) were inspired by a grim account of the bitter cold, starvation, and cannibalism experienced by the Donner Party, he later recalled, "In the creation of comedy, it is paradoxical that tragedy stimulates the spirit of ridicule, because ridicule, I suppose, is an attitude of defiance. We must laugh in the face of our helplessness . . . or go insane" (Chaplin 303).” (Woal and Woal. 1994. Chaplin and the Comedy of Melodrama.) This quote relates to the movie because there are moments in the film where Chaplin is showing the struggles of surviving off of no food and a subtle hint at cannibalism, yet again turns it into a comedy. Big Jim thinks that The Tramp is a chicken, so he chases after him to try and eat him. This refers to the Donner Party and how they had to resort to cannibalism because they were stuck in a blizzard. The Tramp and Big Jim eat one of The Tramp’s shoes which also turns into comedy because The Tramp plucks the leather off of the nails one by one, while also eating the leather in the shape of pasta around his fork. Additionally, the house halfway off of the cliff is another example of comedy used because Chaplin has this anxiety inducing moment where we think that Big Jim might not save The Tramp, but he ultimately does as the house falls off of the cliff. Chaplin’s direction and acting were genius in The Gold Rush through these things which makes the genre of melodramas so important.
The quotes by Linda Williams, Woal and Woal, and William Paul all relate to The Gold Rush by Charlie Chaplin because they give examples of Chaplin’s style of directing and how he brings in real life tragedies into his work yet makes them a comedy as a way to cope. He also makes light of the sitaution such as the Donner Party by making the ending a good one instead of a bad one, kind of like real life. Chaplin also shows his directional skills as well as his acting skills because there are a few dramatic moments in the film which do relate to these real life events. Overall, The Gold Rush was pivotal, especially for the time that it came out because it did something so advanced for a film with no sound, which was shjowing a comedy arising from a tragedy.

Please know that this is RAW STATISTICS. Just because a character is here doesn’t mean it will be included or not included!
For those who just want statistics, we have 269 submissions as of now, with 211 unique characters (if I counted correctly)!
The characters on this list have two or more submissions, and have a high chance of being selected (save for a few with some…not so convincing propaganda)
