it took about 12 hours of trying, incl. several re-specs, crafting, starting over to change my party, one rage-quit, turning off half my trials (Even Ground, Walk Softly), the weirdest party set-up I've ever run on this difficulty, and Verity having, like, 122 Constitution, but I finally bet JoH on Nightmare 😭

[Old reposts] Some thoughts about Ghilan’nain’s and Fen’Harel’s apotheosis
The myth of Ghilan’nains ascension tells that
“[Andruil] approached Ghilan'nain with an offer: the gods would share their power with Ghilan'nain, but only if she destroyed her creations”. (Codex: The Ascension of Ghilan’nain)
Dalish lore also points at Ghilan’nain being especially faithful to Andruil’s moral path and, in turn, favoured by her. The offer of apotheosis itself was extended by none other that Andruil.
This opens up a rare possibility of patronage being granted by the Evanuris to their chosen subjects. Eventually, the Evanuris agreed to “share their power with Ghilan’nain”. It likely involved some sort of social rite of passing: she received a domain, a sacred shapeshifting form (perhaps shapeshifting was reserved for the Evanuris only altogether?), probably much more than that, but she had to enter the clique and adjust to their group dynamic.
It is confirmed by Fen’Harel in Trespasser DLC that godhood among the elvhen was a matter of acquired power. The Evanuris climbed the ladder of power and esteem until they were worshipped as gods. This suggests an enormous disparity between the Evanuris and the common people of the Elvhenan in peak moments before Mythal’s murder - a disparity that Fen’Harel would have sworn to even out.
He could walk among both the Evanuris and the Forgotten Ones, but only the latter are said to have recognized him as their equal.
for although he is kin to the gods of the People, the Forgotten Ones knew of his cunning ways and saw him as one of their own. (Codex: Fen’Harel, The Dread Wolf)
It is implied from Cole’s remark from Trespasser DLC that Solas used to wear the vallaslin, presumably Mythal’s, but removed it from his own face:
He did not want a body. But she asked him to come. He left a scar when he burned her off his face.
I’ll leave aside the possibility of him being chosen as Mythal’s beneficiary at some point in history. What interests me is the tricky position: Fen’Harel being “kin” to the Evanuris, but being excluded from the pantheon; always separated as the double-dealing, lone walker, recognized by the Forgotten Ones, but not quite one of them either.
My guess is that Solas broke free from Mythal while she was still alive because, in his earlier years, he was this kind of archetypal chaotic rogue who couldn’t stand any restrictions, or follow any rules for dear life. Thus, he received a trickster moniker that seems to gather all meanings around betrayal, chaos, deceit, duplicity, havoc, revolt, etc. etc. The ostracization of Solas/ Fen’Harel would have begun long before he started his revolt, for one specific reason: he probably despised both cliques, defied their rules and inner dynamics altogether, and rose to power by plucking whatever bit he wanted to pry away from them to undermine the existing dynamic. For all it’s worth, he operated like a Forgotten One.
From Geldauran’s Claim we can derive that at least one of the Forgotten Ones recognized accomplishments of power and rejected the Evanuris as a group with their pretence to set the rules for others. We don’t know if the Forgotten Ones themselves showed any pretence to define themselves as a group, not just defiant individuals reconciled with their fate to be obscured by history as long as it’s dictated by the Evanuris:
Let Andruil’s bow crack, let June’s fire grow cold. Let them build temples and lure the faithful with promises. Their pride will consume them, and I, forgotten, will claim power of my own, apart from them until I strike in mastery. (Codex: Geldauran’s Claim, JOH)
The myth of Fen’Harel and the Tree shows him between a rock and a hard place, having wronged both Andruil and Anaris the Forgotten One. Which implies, our boy could have been really busy pissing everyone off and usually finding a way to escape retribution by the skin of his teeth. The question remains why Fen’Harel was somehow remembered as a separate entity, not just labelled another Forgotten One.
A possible answer is that his remarkable skill in deceit and double-dealing gave him an immunity pass of a spy mastermind who had a hook on everyone. Which leads us to another possible answer: it’s quite possible that he surpassed both groups, and they reluctantly had to reckon with him while trying to keep the common people away from his area of influence. If he truly managed to imprison both groups of the elvhen “gods”, then for a brief moment he might have been, effectively, the most powerful elvhen to ever exist.
So, here’s a contrast between Ghilan’nain, who obeyed the Evanuris and destroyed the majority of her creation in exchange for power and inclusion (possibly, also the mandate to keep making her creatures on a lesser scale, with better resources and infrastructure, under other Evanuris’ scrutiny), and Fen’Harel who disregarded their rules and quite literally remained a self-made figure. Apotheosis as a token of recognition and as a rise in reputation, and apotheosis as a claim for tangible control.

6, 32 and 47 for the Dragon Age asks please :)
[ask game]
Hi, and thank you for the ask! :)
6. First Inquisitor (gender/class/race/personality)?
June Trevelyan! :) (this bitch ↓)
Tumblr media
She's a human mage who specialises in fire and lighting (and later rift) magic.
She's also A Mess who is absolutely not qualified to run the Inquisition lmao, but hey, it worked somehow! Started out incredibly touchy and defensive bc she had no clue what was going on or what happened or why this Seeker lady was being so hostile or why her hand was glowing and hurting like crazy and her outward attitude stayed that way for. A While lol. Really she's just super anxious and overwhelmed with the situation, but at least she meets her new besties who she can do fantasy science and steal breeches with :)
32. Favorite DLC mission overall?
Mmm another tough choice... Technically i would say Trespasser, but i'm still salty about it being DLC because it feels so integral to the story that imma pass this one jfdslfjd
Instead i wanna say.. The Descent? simply because i am biased and i cling to every bit of Dwarf content we get hfsljfl. I loved the visuals and music also, but it was kind of a pain to play through (like. gameplay wise) ngl... Hard to choose one though because i loved JoH a lot too but it also had very annoying sections x'D
47. Best antagonist in the series?
Answered here, but imma give this one to Rezaren! I was very positively surprised by how well he was done tbh, and he's def up there as one of my favourite antagonists. He doesn't have the same impact as Meredith obviously by virtue of not being a game antagonist or for uh. series spoilers reasons. But he's better written than a lot of other antagonists in the series imo!
Honourable mention to Loghain because i think he's a neat villain, but not within DAO, if that makes sense? Like. The game itself really doesn't give us much to go on, it's the additional content that shows off his motives n background.

IN (SELF-)DEFENSE OF MY DECISIONS. my criteria for a good dlc is 'do i have to pay money to know something lifechanging about the world we're in'. the exiled prince and stone prisoner have entire. CHARACTERS. pushed to a dlc. hate that! (i actually love sebastian and shale, i shouldn't have to PAY EXTRA for them!) legacy & awakening are trespasser category for me - knowledge/context you Need for the next games. so mentally to me theyre not even dlcs theyre just. canon content. the descent and joh is fun, return to ostagar is trauma central and NOT fun, warden's keep is also kinda meh to me, (golems of amgarrak did not make it on the list sldfj) but out of the ones left over, mota was the most enjoyable. i like doing it in act 3 its like a little holiday for everyone. the scene where your companions are going through those dungeons trying to find you and there's the most deranged commentary. merrill asking if you shanked anyone. anders LAUGHING (mostly at fenris tbf). THE HAM OF DESPAIR. yeeting orlesian nobles. "IF I DIE, TELL THEM I DIED AT CHATEAU HAINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!". that blood red rogue armour. the entire scene where anders is publically & cheerfully talking about his sexual fantasies. seneschal bran. MABARI. cheese wheels. the sneaking mechanism. [UNGODLY CACOPHONY]. i can forgive felicia day's existence for everything else that mota was.

The Sha-Brytol have lyrium guns. They have LYRIUM SNIPER RIFLES! A KICKASS AND ALSO HORRIFYING CONCEPT! or at least it would be moreso had I not done JoH first and subsequently have the ability to shoot their lyrium bullets back at them pfhdbfh

Cole and the Augur at Stone-Bear Hold (Jaws of Hakkon DLC)
This is a clip from the Jaws of Hakkon sidequest, In Exile, about the mage Sigrid Gulsdotten, who exiled herself from Stone-Bear Hold after refusing to do the ritual that would part her from her spirit-teacher.
This clip is from the end of the quest, after Sigrid confesses to the augur.  I just absolutely love the Avvar take magic and spirits and teaching mages, and I’m not going to gush about it at length, but I just wanted to highlight Cole’s role in this sidequest, because I just love Cole so much I want to cry it’s very interesting.
His comments to the augur are toward the end of the clip. Of interest, too, is what Cole says to Sigrid when the Inquisitor confronts her about her spirit, which I’ve transcribed here:
***********
Sigrid: I made no offering. I prepared. I began to spell to release the spirit here, with me. [...] I could not do it! I have no close companions in the hold, no kin. I cannot lose my only friend.
Inquisitor: You’re friends with the spirit?
Sigrid: it has taught me patience and kindness since I was a child, frightened of the fire I could suddenly called down.
Cole: it loves you, too. It will stay if you want it.
Sigrid: I know. But I was oath-sworn to release it when the time came. I do not want to lose the one who loves me.
****************
This whole quest is just so fascinating, especially contrasted to the way the Chantry deals with spirits. I didn’t have Solas this time during JOH, but I LOVE HAVING HIM during this DLC because the things he has to say are always fascinating and he can talk nerdy to me forever about anything he wants a really interesting complement to the Avvar’s ways. Having Cole’s input for this quest, and hearing the augur’s reaction to him, were fantastic.
This quest also has me thinking: remember how Anders said that he and Justice are one, and can’t be separated? And how Flemeth also said something similar about herself and Mythal? Well, if what the augur says is true – that the Avvar mages have been joining with spirits and willingly releasing them for hundreds of years – then there’s nothing to say that Anders and Justice couldn’t be separated, nor Mythal from Flemeth. But the question, like Sigrid’s, is whether they want to.
This might not be any big surprise to anyone, but just what I’m thinking about today.

Ooh Avvar welcome? 👀👀
Haah I got this idea because I thought the Avvar armour looked very....well fitted on the Inquisitor :)))
This is definitely supposed to be a part of a series of drabbles about the Inquisition's time in the Frostback Basin because I just love that DLC so much! In this particular bit, some of the Avvar help the Inquisition into their new protective armour. Dorian gets sulky because he has to wear the furs. And the Iron Bull is perceptive as always.
Cassandra entered along with two Avvar women, holding buckets of paint. Steam rose from them in the cold, even though the weather had turned to summer by now. Jonathan and Dorian stripped off their armour and waited for instructions. The good people at Stonebear Hold have been kind enough to offer them help with adapting to the new climate. He wasn't quite sure how the paint would play a role in that, however.
Meanwhile, a young man helped the Iron Bull get into a rather enormous set of furs studded with what looked like enchanted metal plates, to keep warm.
"Off with your shirts now, lowlanders, least the paint gets cold," a woman said to them.
Jonathan hesitated for a second and looked around the room, while Dorian fumbled with the straps of his armour. Always the bloody straps.
"Oh, I can help with that," offered one of the women.
