Cole and the Augur at Stone-Bear Hold (Jaws of Hakkon DLC)
This is a clip from the Jaws of Hakkon sidequest, In Exile, about the mage Sigrid Gulsdotten, who exiled herself from Stone-Bear Hold after refusing to do the ritual that would part her from her spirit-teacher.
This clip is from the end of the quest, after Sigrid confesses to the augur.  I just absolutely love the Avvar take magic and spirits and teaching mages, and I’m not going to gush about it at length, but I just wanted to highlight Cole’s role in this sidequest, because I just love Cole so much I want to cry it’s very interesting.
His comments to the augur are toward the end of the clip. Of interest, too, is what Cole says to Sigrid when the Inquisitor confronts her about her spirit, which I’ve transcribed here:
***********
Sigrid: I made no offering. I prepared. I began to spell to release the spirit here, with me. [...] I could not do it! I have no close companions in the hold, no kin. I cannot lose my only friend.
Inquisitor: You’re friends with the spirit?
Sigrid: it has taught me patience and kindness since I was a child, frightened of the fire I could suddenly called down.
Cole: it loves you, too. It will stay if you want it.
Sigrid: I know. But I was oath-sworn to release it when the time came. I do not want to lose the one who loves me.
****************
This whole quest is just so fascinating, especially contrasted to the way the Chantry deals with spirits. I didn’t have Solas this time during JOH, but I LOVE HAVING HIM during this DLC because the things he has to say are always fascinating and he can talk nerdy to me forever about anything he wants a really interesting complement to the Avvar’s ways. Having Cole’s input for this quest, and hearing the augur’s reaction to him, were fantastic.
This quest also has me thinking: remember how Anders said that he and Justice are one, and can’t be separated? And how Flemeth also said something similar about herself and Mythal? Well, if what the augur says is true – that the Avvar mages have been joining with spirits and willingly releasing them for hundreds of years – then there’s nothing to say that Anders and Justice couldn’t be separated, nor Mythal from Flemeth. But the question, like Sigrid’s, is whether they want to.
This might not be any big surprise to anyone, but just what I’m thinking about today.
