The Exposition Universelle World Fair is in Paris. It contains marvels and art and all sorts of amazing things on display. Oh, and, there’s something called the Babel fragment, which let those who wield it have control over nature’s elements. follows the exploits of a found family―six societal outcasts tasked with stealing a powerful artifact that can alter their lives for the better, but at the cost of breaking the world. All eyes are on Paris where the Exposition Universelle World Fair is to be held. Hidden among the technological marvels and artistic creations on display is an item of unimaginable power―a Babel fragment that would enable those who wield it with magical Forging abilities over nature’s elements.
Séverin needs to steal the fragment to regain his place in France. And, so, he rounds up a bunch of misfits to steal it from the Fair. From Zofia, engineer and math wiz, to Tristan, Séverin’s adopted brother, and three others. All five are from the fringes of society, but, have skills that Séverin will need to steal the fragment.
The characters were amazing, and those were what sucked me into the book. The world building (there’s magic, and when there’s magic there has to be quite a bit of world building of that system) was fun to read too. It was an interesting read, and, I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next books in the series.
You may like this book If you Liked: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, The Diviners by Libba Bray, or A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess

ignoring the knife
A while back I got a book called "the house of dragons" by Jessica Cluess it was an alright book, good plot had me interested in all the characters and such. to add to it there where dragons. Spoilers: My biggest gripe about the book was it ended with what clearly was sequel bait. I did not like that.
spoilers end. I ended up drawing some of the dragons that appeared in the book.

I saw you love red, white, and royal blue and I've just gotta ask you: have you heard of Burn the House Down by Kenna Jenkins? It's an alternate history novel abt the 1st woman president and her secret sapphic relationship/bearded marriage with her mlm best friend. It also includes a subplot about arson at the White House, ft. An entirely queer main cast and really fleshed out characters, and has a really satisfying ending!
Hey!
I haven't but I'm definitely interested now. I don't find a lot of Sapphic stories that I like (last unpleasant surprise was House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess), I'm definitely gonna read your recommendation.
Thanks!!!

my 11th book read in 2023 - House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess
i've wanted to read this since it first came out and i was NOT disappointed! though i liked some of the main characters more than others, all of their POVs were good and engaging--the characters are definitely a strength of this book. i liked the worldbuilding, too, especially the relationship of each character and their dragon. i ate this book up SO quickly and i would definitely read it again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

From the pile, in no specific order (except the first one):

All of Us Villains, Amanda Foody & Christine Lynn Herman
The City We Became, N. K. Jemisin
The Black Veins, Ashia Monet

Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo
Crooked Kingdom, Leigh Bardugo
We Hunt the Flame, Hafsah Faizal
We Free the Stars, Hafsah Faizal
The Raven Boys, Maggie Stiefvater
The Dream Thieves, Maggie Stiefvater
I actually started reading Summer Sons on the 5th earlier this month. I'm about to finish soon too! Hopefully I'll be able to finish to write down (what might be scattered) thoughts I have on the book!
Until then~

Book Review #34 of 2021-
Tumblr media
House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess. Rating: 4 stars.
Read from May 20th to 24th.
I was disappointed to learn when I was less than 100 pages away from finishing this book that this author is apparently a big asshole online. I’ve had this book on my TBR for a little while, but in the time since I purchased it the author has been a bully online. Which probably means that while I did really enjoy this book I will not be continuing on with this series. I think I’m okay with where the story left off. It’s fine.
House of Dragons is a new adult/upper YA Fantasy novel about a world where dragons and their riders have a special bond in the empire of Etrusia. The latest emperor has died and now the five houses must send forth one person to fight for the Dragon Throne. But things don’t go as planned when the five called aren’t what the families expected. The liar, the soldier, the servant, the thief, and the murderer must all face off in a battle for the throne.
I feel like this is a lighter fantasy novel for people who like the idea of Game of Thrones but who can’t really wrap their mind around all the politicking. All of the houses have their own dragons, their own colors, and their own land to govern. And I liked seeing how the different families interacted with each other. I think the author does a great job of showing the bond between a dragon and their rider. Especially toward the end of the novel when the action really gets going. There were moments when I was reminded of the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik in a really nice and sweet way.
I think I could have done with more world building. I know I said that this is like Game of Thrones lite, but I really think this could have become one of my favorite novels of all time if we had gotten more world building, more character development, and a better bond between our competitors from the start. It didn’t feel as fleshed out as I would have liked. I think the dragon part and the magic part has been explored really well, but the basics needed more in my opinion.
Like I said, I won’t be continuing on with the series due to the authors online presence and the bullying she’s done recently. I would suggest people read up on it if they, like me, had no clue about it up until now. I know there are some things where you can separate the art from the artist, but I don’t know that this is one of them for me personally.
