Transformers has a lot of quotable lines, especially from the animated movie, but “I’ve heard it said that we only gain wisdom through suffering, and tonight I intend to make you very wise” is so fucking raw and needs more appreciation

One of the most insane corporate decisions in entertainment media ever in my opinion is still Hasbro doing the 1986 animated Transformers movie where they violently kill off over 10 recurring beloved characters on screen, including the main guy, and then were surprised when children showed severe anguish over seeing Optimus Prime slowly dying of his wounds in a fucking hospital

Another thing from the old Transformers cartoon that I think was the key to the series standing out is that unlike most of these action shows, the characters had a much wider range of personalities.

Like yes Optimus was the perfect leader and Ironhide was the gung-ho fighter and Perceptor was the smart guy but then they also had a bunch of good guys that had no interest in fighting, allied by the fact that they were (A) decent people, and (B) technically refugees

Beachcomber was a useless hippie

Jazz and Blaster were both skilled soldiers but kept getting distracted by how cool Earth culture was

the Aerialbots thought Earth sucked and that humans are creepy and gross, but agreed that the Decepticons were assholes

That one orange crane guy was a frustrated and mildly incompetent architect that considered joining the bad guys because Prime wouldn’t let him build a tower

Red Alert worried a lot and also sometimes had psychotic breaks where he thought his friends were conspiring against him—not that the bad guys were mind controlling him, just he had an actual neurological defect and his friends knew it happened from time to time so they took care of him. Surprisingly compassionate for the time!

Then in the bad guy side, Megatron was a standard cackling villain and he had his loyal thugs and minions but then there was Starscream who was like this egomaniac traitorous impulsive coward suckup scientist, like they really could have spread it out and given some of the other guys personalities too but nope, just one unpredictable jet guy.

(Also sometimes Galvatron and Soundwave hold hands.)

One particular episode in season three though really played it up, “Webworld”, in which all the guys I just named are dead and the bad guys are now lead by the raving lunatic Galvatron and his loyal follower Cyclonus. Galvatron goes way past the usual 80s cartoon villainy and just gnaws the set and kills his own dudes, and finally the rest of the team gets so sick of it they force Cyclonus to get Galvatron therapy. (The Autobots barely appear in this episode at all.) Obviously Big G doesn’t want to go, and his pitiful rage-filled yet terrified screams for his lieutenant to help him out of his restraints and Cyclonus’ guilt about having his boss committed were some really well/acted and intense emotions for this kids show about alien robots as an analogy for the energy crisis

i don't like when people are saying "usa is a third world country" on posts about bad things happening here, that makes it sound like some countries are inherently supposed to be better than others

or that it would be "Normal" if a so called third world country was trying to make it legal to run over homeless people with cars or whatever republicans are up to these days
