Birthday boy.

Pairing : Past!JaredxReader Word count : 1,797 Warning : Sad reader. River has a birthday wish.
Part 10 in ‘My son, Bringer of Storms’.
Jared took your advice. The next weekend he went home, and the boys spent time with his parents while he tried to work on things with Gen. Again. When he came back, you could tell it hadn’t gone as well as he had hoped it would. You had passed him in the lobby, and gave him a reassuring smile on your way out.
He was tired, and drained. Between work, and trying to make things work with everyone, he felt like he was running on empty. He came home after work that Wednesday to a note taped to his door that simply said “downstairs.”
With a groan, he headed down and knocked on your door. You answered, and a wonderful smell hit him. “Come on.” You smiled and led him in, letting him shut the door behind him.
“What’s up?”
“You’ve been pretty down, so your son decided to learn to cook your favorite home cooked meal. Or, at least what I remember it being.”
You both stepped into the kitchen, the table was all set, and River was putting the bread and butter on the table. “You did all this?” Jared looked around impressed.
“Mom had to help a little bit.” He looked up at his dad, hopeful this would help cheer him up. You smiled at River and moved to pull dinner out of the oven, where it was keeping warm.
Jared sat down where River told him to, and he smiled as you both got the last of the stuff out and set up. “It looks great, and smells amazing. Thank you, River.” River beamed with pride as he sat next to Jared.
“We made dessert too. River couldn’t decide, so cupcakes and cookies.” You smiled as you sat.
You never asked how things were going between him and Gen. It wasn’t really any of your business. And he knew where to find you if he ever wanted to talk it out.
As the days turned to weeks, he seemed to slowly cheer up a little and was going home more. But River didn’t give up on his mission.
Whenever he had Jared alone, he’d point out your haircut, your new shirt, new makeup, anything that could lead to him mentioning how beautiful you were. Anything to get his dad to look at you. And look he did. He’d glance over as you walked into the room with a soft smile on his face. That’s when River knew he’d won. At least when it came to Jared.
You were a whole other story. You knew what he was doing. His tactics were limited though. Jensen wouldn’t help him, and he couldn’t do anything that would get him into trouble and grounded again. So he tried talking Jared up to you, but you’d just ignore what he said and change the subject, or get up and walk away.
Then he tried inviting Jared over more, and then casually ‘remembering’  he had to do something for school, or say he was tired and go to bed early. Anything to get you two alone. And every time he’d get frustrated to find out Jared did not spend the night.
He was beginning to wonder if you had lied to him. If maybe you didn’t really still love Jared the way you said you did. He was awake much later than he should have been, and was trying to think of something. His 9th birthday was coming up, and while he didn’t believe that birthday candle wishes came true, he was willing to try. Sliding out of his bed, he opened his door and silently walked out to get a drink of water.
He froze outside your door when he heard you crying. It was open enough for him to see in. You were on your back your arm across your eyes and your phone to your ear. “I can’t do this, mom. I don’t know what to do with him anymore. Please, I just need a week or something… No, you don’t understand. He’s killing me. He keeps trying to push me and his dad together. I’m so tired of being alone, but I can’t have him and even if I found someone else now, River’s heart is set on his father. He’d hate me. I just need a break. I just need a few days to myself, where I don’t have those hazel eyes staring at me from both of them… Please?” He heard you sniffle, and even in the dark, he could see your lip quiver as you teared up more. “Forget it, mom.” You hung up and rolled to your side, crying into your pillow.
River watched for a moment, watched your body shake with each sob. He knew if he called Jared, he’d come running down the stairs. But that would probably just make it worse. He hung his head, and went back into his room, silently shutting the door. That’s when an idea hit him. It wouldn’t push you two together, but it would give you the opportunity to be alone without him forcing it.
“If there is a real Castiel out there, please, just let my mom be happy. She’s a good person. I’ll do anything, even really believe in you and go to church. I mean, if I have to..”
When you felt all cried out, you wiped your eyes, and opened your phone. Getting on twitter to try and distract yourself, you scanned friends posts, and a friend posting a picture of her smiling family had you tearing up again. You felt like you’d never have that.
Forever feeling alone. It’s been so long.
Hitting post, you wrapped yourself around the pillow again.
The next evening, you got a call from Sarah. “Hey, can I ask you something?”
“Of course. What’s up?”
“Do you have plans for Rivers party yet?”
“Uh, not really. We’re doing a small thing with his dad on his birthday, but that’s all we planned so far. He was deciding on what he wanted. I was thinking of renting out that video game place you had Chris’s party at last year.”
“Chris had an idea, can I run it past you?”
“Of course! He’d know best being River’s best friend.” You smiled, glad he had a friend like Chris.
“Well, you know where Jason works right?” You hummed an answer. A few times her oldest, Jason, had picked up newly released games for you. “Well Chris already asked, and Jason said he could. He wants to surprise River with a video game party here. Pizzas, and a sleepover. Jason is going to rent consoles and a bunch of games from work. It was just going to be Jason and Chris home with me that weekend, so I don’t mind having River over for the whole thing. It’ll keep Chris out of my ass.” She laughed.
“What poor sucker did you pawn the other two kids off on?”
“Their dad, finally.” She chuckled. “So what do you say? Chris is bouncing around next to me waiting for an answer.”
You smiled and nodded. “That would be great, Sarah. I can’t tell you how much I could use the break.”
“Talk to me when you have three more.” She laughed.
“Never going to happen.” You laughed. “Let me know what to bring-”
“Nothing.”
“I’m at least paying for the Pizza, Sarah. And some snacks, don’t be ridiculous.” She continued to protest, saying it was their gift to River, that he was like her fourth son that she gladly didn’t have to birth. “Either you let me pay for something, or I’ll owe you one so bad, that the next time you have a hot date, I’ll watch all your kids for free.”
“Oh sweetie, don’t make a promise you can’t keep. I’ll take you up on it right now.” You burst out laughing. “She said yes, Chris. Go figure out who you’re inviting.”
You heard his excitement and smiled. “Seriously, Sarah. Thanks for this.”
River’s actual birthday was on a Tuesday. Jared had facetimed with his boys for a bit so they could wish their big brother a happy birthday. Then, he dragged you both out for a birthday dinner, meeting Jensen, Misha, and Mark there. They were more than happy to celebrate with you, having gotten to know River a bit. River was excited to be having dinner with the Winchesters, an angel and the King of Hell. They even went so far as to order meals in character, making River laugh hysterically.
They were recognized a few times, but most people stayed away seeing that they were celebrating a child’s birthday. River made sure not to call Jared dad while out, knowing that if it got out, it might make things harder between him and Gen.
They spoiled him with awesome gifts, which you hadn’t been expecting. Then on the way out, they were stopped for pictures, and they were happy to oblige for a few minutes. River loved feeling so important, especially on his birthday.
“Good birthday?” Jared asked once you were in his car.
“Best ever!” River grinned. “Thanks dad.”
“Your oldest only turns 9 once.” Jared smiled and looked at you.
That Friday, you had spent the afternoon at Sarah’s. River was beyond excited with his party, and you made sure to take plenty of pictures, sending a few to Jared knowing he’d like to see them. As you ordered pizza, River pulled Chris aside. “Dude, this is awesome! You didn’t have to go all crazy with it.”
“Go big or go home, right? That’s what Jason says.” Chris laughed. “Think it’ll work? Is your dad even going to be here? Didn’t you say he usually goes away for weekends?”
River sighed. “I just have to hope he doesn’t go this weekend. Sometimes he doesn’t, so I might get lucky.. I’m going to wish really hard-”
“Dude! Don’t tell, or it won’t come true!”
“Alright, Pizza’s ordered!” You called out, and were met with the sound of 12 kids cheering.
You had stayed until the last kid who wasn’t sleeping over left and helped Sarah clean up. Afterwards, River all but shoved you out the front door telling you to go home and relax.
So here you were, relaxing on the couch in sweats and a tank after a long, hot shower that you took full advantage of. You grabbed the bag of candy you had snagged from Sarah’s and turned on the tv to search for a movie or something to watch. You settled in, when there was a knock at your door. Confused you turned and looked at it before getting up. Who could it be?
You unlocked the door and pulled it open. “Jared? What are you doing here?”

Yeah the “maybe in another world, another life, we’re meant to be” tropes are great. They are sad and perfect and everything we want. But when this was the ONLY life in which it would work, the ONLY world that the angel rebelled against God, went against orders. And they STILL couldn’t have a happy ending. That isn’t just a sad storyline, that’s bad writing.
