Glee Musical Retrospective : Don't Rain On My Parade (Sectionals)
youtube
Sung by: Rachel Berry Original Artist(s): from Funny Girl OS
Oh, it's definitely a very special episode, isn't it? Pull up a chair and get comfy because we're talking about Rachel Berry's most iconic number...
Admittedly, I have never seen Funny Girl - but from what I can tell, it's the semi-biographic tale of an awkward, Jewish woman who gets into show business originated by Barbra Streisand. While I hear it hasn't aged well -- I can still see why someone like Rachel Berry would fine inspiration (and aspiration) here.
I wish I had more of a history of Lea Michele and this particular song - I'm sure there's a story there, too. Maybe Kevin and Jenna will shed some light on it (if they haven't already).
Story Analysis
So... let's break down why this song is such a great fit for Rachel...
Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
The song starts out as a punchy declaration to other people about how she doesn't want to be idle in her life. And how she won't let them push her into their way of thinking. That's the thing about Rachel - this song has a sharpness about it, she has a goal, she has ambition, and she won't let even the worst circumstances temper her desire to get to where she wants to be.
Don't tell me not to fly I've simply got to If someone takes a spill It's me and not you Who told you you're allowed to rain on my parade
Again, it's all tied up in Rachel's ambitions and where she wants to go in her life. She can't /not/ go for her dreams - it's not in her, and the lyrics reflect that accordingly.
I'll march my band out I'll beat my drum And if I'm fanned out Your turn at bat, sir At least I didn't fake it Hat, sir, I guess I didn't make it
Rachel's number one fan is Rachel herself - and that drive is going to push her out to at least try with everything she's got. She has to be her own cheerleader, especially since she has so many people telling her she's never going to make it -- for a variety of reasons. And even if she fails, she can at least claim that she gave it her honest best shot.
But whether I'm the rose of sheer perfection A freckle on the nose of life's complexion A cinder on the shiny apple of his eye I gotta fly once I gotta try once Only can die once, right, sir Ooh, life is juicy Juicy, and you see I gotta have my bite, sir
I know that this song is about Fanny Brice wanting to get married. But you can substitute the guy for being on Broadway -- Rachel's dream being the love affair in question here. And again, it's reiteration that Rachel is too ambitious, has too much drive to not try. Her whole self and self worth is wrapped up in her dreams, and she can only owe it to herself to go out and achieve them.
Get ready for me, love, cause I'm a comer I simply gotta march My heart's a drummer Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
I'm gonna live and live now Get what I want I know how
Okay, so I'm beginning to feel redundant now, but I feel like every line in this song speaks to who Rachel is as a person. And about how she's going to live her best possible life, even if other people don't want her to, even if other people are telling her she shouldn't or can't. She's going to do it anyway.
One roll for the whole shebang One throw, that bell will go clang Eye on the target and wham One shot, one gun shot, and BAM Hey, Mr. Arnstien Here I am!
And, I mean, in true Rachel fashion - this song gets more dramatic as it goes along. It all builds up to that moment where she declares 'here I am' - because she's arrived -- and in this moment, she's arrived in the spotlight on the stage. It's her debut as the star of the show - and here she is - Rachel Berry - in all of her young, optimistic glory.
Technical Thoughts
So... first of all, I think it's somewhat obligatory to say that Lea Michele does really well with this song. She's technically very proficient, and understands the needs of a Broadway song (that sing-speech style; the range and vocal technique, etc, etc). What I really want to comment on, though, is the acting --
There's a difference between any actress singing this song as Fanny Brice in the world of Funny Girl and Rachel Berry singing this as her debut song at a competition as a teenage girl.
The way the song is shot and sung is really quite interesting. First of all there's the curtain open on the first, sharp 'Don't' - which makes it very visually punctuated. The spotlight is on her, and her vocals come out as very strong. (She's also coming out alone - as this is purposely Rachel's moment to shine.) But, if you watch through her initial walking down, she's very nervous, and very uneasy about the performance. It's a nice touch - and one I really didn't notice until closer look, the vocals are so strong, it's easy to miss Rachel's initial apprehension.
And then, of course, Rachel gets into it -- playing it up with the audience as they watch her. This song is hers, and she knows it, and lets the drive of the song drive her performance.
One thing I do like about this song is that Rachel gets to move around a lot -- there's a bit of choreography going on, and she gets to play with her motion as the song goes, giving it a lot of energy. Unfortunately, Rachel solos begin to get bogged down in overemoting messes, so it's nice to see her take charge with such fire.
So - as the performance reaches its climax -- you notice how the camera work gets more frantic as it swirls around her. It's a nice way to add momentum to the song as she yells 'bam'. It also happens again, too, when she's belting 'here I am'. The camera moves in and focuses closely in on her -- because she's arrived at this applauded moment.
Another nice beat to this one is that as she sings 'i'll march my band out' the rest of the glee club comes out. It's a nice visual moment matching up with the lyrics.
I will end by saying - the song has definitely been pre-recorded (obviously), and doesn't have that live sound - but I think they do a really good job covering the moment with such a dramatic performance that, unless you're listening for it, you can't tell.
If you guys want some good, actual vocal technique analysis, I have a couple of links for you:
Hannah Bayles
Songs from a Suitcase
Glee Live
youtube
This is the version done for the 3D movie (um, did it need to be in 3D??). Anyway - this is, more than anything, Lea Michele as Rachel Berry having a flirty, fun time with the audience (and camera). It's less about the specific lyrics and meaning of the song, and more about having fun and showing off her abilities.
Lea Michele as Fanny Brice
youtube
Okay, so I'm including this because, well, I'd be remiss not to - but also because it shows the difference between playing the song as it is in context -- as Fanny Brice as opposed to Rachel Berry singing it for her debut competition number, or even Lea Michele doing it for funsies. The song, in context, is much calmer - and more reflective of the actual conflict going on in the character's life.
I think, also interestingly, since Lea's older now -- her voice has hit it's full maturity. There's a depth to it that she didn't have it before. Part of it is the context and location, but it is a deeper and fuller sound than when she sang it as Rachel.
vs. The Studio Version : I mean, other than that the vocals to instrument/accompaniment ratio is better mixed and that they take out all the TV performance extra noise of the crowd, etc, it's pretty much the same.
vs. The Original Version : So, weirdly, I had never heard the Barbra Streisand version before Glee - and here it is! This is the movie version, which allow sit to be a bit more intimate than when it's sung on a stage. Of course, Barbra is, like, flawless. But it's kind of fun listening to how this is just interpreted so differently. Of course - it's her as Fanny Brice, and again, in a movie not the stage. But I think just goes to show that music can be written out the exact same way but have so many different types of interpretations.

Here is a very detailed interview with Jenna Coleman for Netflix tudum, about The Sandman!
Some key aspects of the interview are:
And then I was shooting in Bangkok and some material came through to me. And I knew it was Sandman, but I didn't know what [character]
So Jenna was first considered for the roles of Johanna Constantine/Lady Johanna Constantine all the way back in 2019 (or early 2020)!
Here, she talks about Neil Gaiman's imagination, and why she wanted to play a role in The Sandman:
his world is so vast and rich and poetic and [he has] such a psychedelic imagination. For a performer, it allows you to bring a sense of theater that is very hard to find in material like that. And it feels like it's so distinctly Neil Gaiman's visual aesthetic and imagination and art. That was a big reason for me wanting to do it.
How she prepared for the role:
And then a lot of the research came from the comic books, [Gaiman’s story] “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and looking at exorcisms and going down the occult research route as well.
How she interacted with Tom Sturridge (Morpheus):
I think when we got to set, in terms of the meeting of Dream and how Tom [performed], it was like he was completely present and grounded and in the present world with you, but his movement, his voice, caught that ethereal nature. He's operating on so many levels of consciousness at once. It was so interesting because I was like, “I'm not reacting [like] this is just another human or another character. This is another kind of being.” So it really changed the dynamic and the performance, just working with him and reacting to his interpretation of Dream.
How she describes Johanna Constantine:
There's a certain disillusionment and disenchantment with Johanna Constantine. She's been working since she was young. She's seen a lot of things in her life. It's very hard to surprise her or intrigue her. I also think she has a vast intellect and is quite easily and quickly bored. And I think that's where the conman artist aspect comes in as well. She's always looking three steps ahead and operating in a way of trying to distract people while she's doing something else on the back end. Whereas with Dream, and what I found with Tom in terms of his rhythm, she was kind of intrigued by him, so I think it changed that tempo a bit.
And her relationship with Morpheus:
She can very easily read people and very easily, obviously, deceive and trick and be that con artist, whereas obviously Dream is an entirely different kind of someone than [who] she's come into contact with before. So it is kind of seeing Johanna tick in a way that, one, she's impressed by him and she admires him, but also equally, she's trying to work out how to crack him and [find out] where his weaknesses are and using humor or wit to do that while she's also constantly calculating. It's like playing a game of chess; she's chess-gaming with him all the time. As we were filming, there were certain scenes where they took unexpected directions. And I think there's a mutual admiration for the other one with an absolute reluctance to show it. I think that it was like a lovely, slow dawning of a friendship of two lone warriors.
Jenna's favourite scenes to film were:
I really loved the stuff with Mad Hettie [who warns Constantine about Dream] because I just felt like it was right out of the comic book. I could see the images from the comic just coming to life. And we were shooting in London at the height of the pandemic, and there was nobody [anywhere]. London was so quiet. It's the stillest I've ever seen London and there was something quite beautiful about that. So yeah, I'd say that. And there's certain iconic shots, like Dream with the Raven in silhouette form and Johanna in the rain with the umbrella — there's something like a nod to a lot of those old noir films there.
We've not seen those film noir type scenes yet, but from this description, they promise to be amazing!
Finally, Jenna also commented about the future prospects for her characters:
We've only touched upon Lady Johanna Constantine [in Season 1], so I think there's definitely a lot more to explore there. But in terms of as a character of the contemporary Constantine, yeah, I'd absolutely love to see that particular version return.
This is a very interesting statement, as John Constantine (who could not be used in the show, and whose role in the story is instead played by the newly created character of modern-day Johanna Constantine) does not appear in later comics. So this would require several new storylines for this newly created character to be made. As far as I've seen, the initial reactions to Jenna's modern-day Johanna Constantine have been very positive, and Netflix clearly likes having Jenna on the cast.
Possible future seasons of the show will, however, certainly feature 18th-Century Lady Johanna Constantine, as Jenna mentioned in the interview.
I also want to point out that I find it very weird that the article starts off with the sentence: "After five years, Jenna Coleman is returning to genre television". Jenna has done a lot of television in the last 5 years. There are even 2 separate shows on Netflix that were released in the last 5 years; The Serpent and The Cry.
And always remember: Jenna Coleman, MVP

Jojo Siwa’s DWTS numbers by gayness
Jojo Siwa, as you may know, recently appeared on season 500 or whatever of Dancing with the Starts, She was the first guest to dance with a partner of the same gender, making it through all 10 weeks and 14 dances to ultimately take second.
Here is my subjective, but definitive, ranking of her dances from least to most gay. I am trying to make these more than just how good they were, or how homoerotic, but obviously both of these are strongly correlated.
Without further ado:
# 14: Cha-Cha to "Rain on Me", by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, week 2
Premise: 2 Execution: 2
They promised nothing, and they delivered.
# 13: Tango-Salsa Fusion to "I Love It" by Icona Pop, week 10
Premise: 1 Execution: 3
This is a bit of an oddball to choreograph to -- it's an upbeat dance number about getting out of a bad relationship, about not relating to a partner, and so if you're doing a partner dance to it the easiest way to go is just ignore what the song is about. That's the route they took here, anyway, and whatever chemistry Jojo and Jenna have is not especially well served.
# 12: Jazz to "Anything Goes", cover by District 78, week 6
Premise: 3 Execution: 2
Jojo plays queer icon Pennywise the Clown in this absolutely stunning dance. This one only comes out ahead of the previous two because having the lead be a literal monster is kinda gay.
# 11: Quickstep to "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet, week 1
Premise: 6 Execution: 2
The idea of two women dancing ballroom to this song is pretty gay. However, it was Jojo's first week and the connection isn't really there, nor is the choreography particularly intimate.
\10: Paso Doble to "Ways to be Wicked" from Disney Descendants, week 4
Premise: 6 Execution: 3
A dance about leather-clad villains celebrating their villainy, this is another that had a lot of potential. But that potential is sapped by the Disney Channel singers, and the fact that Jojo's martial bonhomie, while expressive, lacks a certain connection to the body
# 9: Argentine Tango to "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)", week 9
Premise: 5 Execution: 5
Not a whole lot to say here one way or the other
#8: Argentine Tango to "...One More Time" by Britney Spears, week 3
Premise: 6 Execution: 5
Is Britney a gay icon? Yes. Does this dance leverage that in any meaningful way? No.
#7: Viennese Waltz to "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" by Ilene Woods, week 4
Premise: 8 Execution: 5
Jojo Siwa is playing Prince Charming to Jenna's Cinderella, so this should be very gay; however, it's still early in the show, and there's a rigidity to this dance that makes it not as gay as it could have been.
#6: Salsa to "Feedback" by Janet Jackson, week 8
Premise: 7 Execution: 7
Finally, we have found a dance with a real sensuality to it
#5: Tango to "Body Language" by Queen, week 7
Premise: 6 Execution: 8
The bedazzled bodysuits. The fake-leather boots. The ponytail grabs. The calls for body. These queens are working and I am here for it.
# 4: Freestyle to "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, week 10
Premise: 10 Execution: 8
The only dance that is explicity about being gay, and yet not even the gayest dance in this list. The backup dancers switching from opposite-sex partners to same-sex partners for the last chorus is a good touch.
# 3: Foxtrot to "Sandra Dee (reprise)", from Grease, week 5
Premise: 10 Execution: 8
This dance asks the question, "Do you ship Sandy and Frenchie? Because we absolutely do, and will make you cry about it." The intimacy when Jenna removes Jojo's scarf -- simply incredible. Lesbian energies off the charts. And yet...
#2: Rumba to "The Way Love Goes" by Janet Jackson, week 8
Premise: 9 Execution: 10
Is this as high as it is just because it's their single sexiest performance? Probably. I have been trying to expand the criteria here beyond just the homoerotic, but Jojo and Jenna really bring the heat here.
And finally:
#1: Contemporary to "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi, week 9
Premise: 10 Execution: 10
This is a breakup song that's being danced like a breakup song, and it WORKS. Jojo and Jenna are bringing passion, intimacy, connection, physicality. Probably their best dance of the entire season, and absolutely their gayest. Words fail.

3. Jeon Jungkook - First Meeting
A single earbud blasted music into my ear as I rode my bike back home after school. Despite trying to pedal fast and get home before the storm hit hard, I was slowed down by overcrowded pedestrians walking at snail speed on the sidewalk. All I could do to make it less frustrating was listen to my music. Softly humming to the beat of the song, I navigated cautiously through the sea of people. My back felt heavy with my school bag draped over it and I groaned at all the homework I’d have to do once I got home.
Eventually, small water droplets started dropping from the sky and hitting my exposed skin, and soaking my white shirt. Huffing, I pulled my bike over to the nearest place with outdoor seating and something covering my head. Which so happened to be a small coffee shop that I sometimes went to on my way home. I pushed my bike against the brick wall and sat down to wait for the rain to subside, and to pass the time a lot quicker, I decided to get a head start on some of my homework. History was the first one that I took out of my bag.   A few minutes passed and the rain was only getting heavier, so I was kind of debating whether I should call a friend to pick me up. However, it wasn’t a good idea because I wouldn’t be able to bring my bike home at the same time. Suddenly, a hooded man ran underneath the coffee shop coverage. His clothes were damp from the rainfall, but he didn’t seem to care. Not wanting to seem like I staring creep, I looked back at my homework. But I couldn’t really help it. He was attractive. His skin was pale but had a sunkissed look to it, his lips were a peachy shade of pink, his jawline was sharp and could probably cut through anything if it were a knife, and his hair looked so soft and fluffy, as the deep brown darkened in the stormy weather. I had to force myself to not stare.  I forced myself to do my homework, avoiding making any type of eye contact with the beautiful stranger stands a few feet away from me.  “Excuse me.” His sweet, deep voice penetrated my one ear that wasn’t covered with an earbud. Looking up, I saw him standing in front of me, his phone in one hand and his other hand in his pocket. His smooth brown eyes were staring right at me.  “Sorry to bother you,” he said, his English choppy, “but my phone is dead and I was wondering if you could tell me what time it is?”  I picked my phone up from on top of my history textbook and clicked the middle button, making the screen turn on. My wallpaper was a photo of my best friend, Ophelia, and I at the beach in Los Angeles last summer with her parents. Ophelia was wearing a two-piece swimsuit that was pumpkin orange, and it complimented her mocha skin tone. I was wearing a firetruck red two-piece that had white polka dots all over it. The two of us were standing in the bright blue ocean, hugging one another, as her older brother took the photo. I read the time on the lock screen and looked up at him.  “It’s 3:40,” I answered, “almost four.” “Ah, thank you.”  He turned around and went to sit at an empty table. I bit my bottom lip softly before speaking again.  “If you’d like, you can use my phone charger and computer to charge your phone.”   The stranger looked over at me and smiled while nodding his head. Then he was out of his seat and in the seat next to me in a split second. I removed my white iPhone charger and my laptop from my backpack and handed them to him. After hooking the charger to the computer, he hooked his charger to his phone and watched as it turned on.    “I’m Jungkook,” he introduced.  “I’m Avery,” I smiled, holding out my hand to shake his. His large, calloused hand wrapped around my small, soft one. After greeting one another, we started discussing some random things like the type of music we listened to, family, books we’ve read. I even learned that Jungkook wasn’t from America, which I kind of already figured from his accent, and learned that he was from South Korea. Jungkook even started teaching me some small Korean words. It was a lot of fun, and it passed the time a lot better than sitting here and doing boring school assignments. Jungkook turned to the coffee shop and pointed at it.  “Is this place any good?” He questioned. “Yeah, they are,” I answered, “I come here pretty often.”  “Do you want to get some coffee with me?” “Sure.” The two of us stood up and went inside the small coffee shop. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee beans, cinnamon, and vanilla filled my nose as we entered. The little chime of the bell above the door alerted the barista that he had some customers.   I helped Jungkook read the menu before ordering. While we waited for the drinks to be made, we continued talking. “So you still go to school?” He asked. “Yeah, it’s my senior year,” I replied, “how about you?” He shook his head just as the barista placed our drinks on the counter. The two of us picked them up and headed back outside, continuing the conversation along the way. “I graduated in 2017.” “Oh, so two years ago.” He nodded his head.   The rain was coming down hard. I was sipping on my cold brew while watching each drop hit the ground. There were few cars driving through the streets, but really most people stayed out during weather like this. The idea of the roads being too slick and causing an accident was enough to deter people from causing an accident. It was one of the few good things about living in Seattle. As I placed my coffee down, I shook my phone in front of Jungkook while smirking. “Wanna play some iPhone games?” I persuaded, “I bet I can beat ya.” A sneaky, mischief smile appeared on his face, “get ready to lose.” We exchanged numbers and started off by playing 8ball. Jungkook was extremely competitive and he was good too. Luckily for myself, I was competitive too. So for the next hour, we played as many imessage games trying to beat one another. We were tied and the last game we were playing was connect four. The game was hard to win considering neither one of us was stupid enough to let the other person connect four. This game lasted the longest out of all the ones we played.  However, as the rain started to slow down, I finally ended up beating Jungkook. I giggled as Jungkook started pouting, crossing his arms, and puffed out his bottom lip. This action caused me to laugh even harder. He looked at me out of the corner of his eyes and began laughing too. Soon the rain stopped altogether, so it was time for me to head home. I packed up all of my things and grabbed my bike.   “It was fun hanging out with you, Jungkook,” I giggled, “hopefully we’ll see each other again before you head back to South Korea.”  Jungkook nodded, “I liked hanging out with you too, Avery. Since I have your number, I’ll give you a call so we can play some more games.”  “Sounds like a plan!” I hopped on my bike and waved to him goodbye as I rode off towards my home. I walked through my front door calling out to my family that I was home. Mom, Dad, Austin, and Jenna were all sitting on the couch when I walked into the living room. Austin looked up at me.  “What took you so long?” He asked. “It started raining,” I answered, plopping down next to Jenna, “so I waited for it to stop.”  “Good, because the last thing your father and I need is you getting hurt,” mom said, smiling. They were watching Wipeout on the television and soon I was immersed in it as well. That is until my phone dinged and I looked down to see if the message was from Ophelia. It wasn’t, it was from Jungkook. He had sent me a photo of him with the message reading: Can’t wait to see you again. Use this photo for the icon above my number.  I smiled and sent him a recent photo of me that Ophelia took telling him the same thing. I hadn’t noticed that Jenna was leaning over my shoulder reading my message until she screamed so loud I felt my eardrum almost burst. Quickly, I dropped my phone in my lap and covered my ear. Austin and I glared at her while our parents looked at her with questionable looks. Jenna picked my phone up.  “Ave,” she started, “did you meet this guy today?” “Well yeah,” I said, “he got caught in the rain too, so we chatted a bit, got some coffee, and played some iPhone games while we waited. Why?”  “You literally met my idol!” She squealed. “Idol?” “Yeah, those lame Korean boys that she has plastered all over her room,” Austin said, turning his attention back to his phone, “you know the one with seven members in it?”  “BTS,” Jenna answered, “you met the youngest member of the group, Jeon Jungkook. You have to give me his number, Ave!”  As quickly as she had picked up my phone, I snatched it away. “No way!” I snapped, “I can’t just give you his number, especially if he doesn’t even know who you are. What if he’s not cool with it, Jen?” I grabbed my backpack from next to my feet and went upstairs. I could hear Jenna pouting and crying to mom and dad about me not giving her the phone number. I closed the door behind me as I entered my room and sighed. That’s when my phone dinged again and I looked at it. It was a text from Jungkook. As I read the message, I felt my cheeks burn as they turned bright pink. I shot him a quick message to reply and then sat at my desk to finish up my homework. Yet, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop thinking about the last text Jungkook sent me and I knew I’d probably still be blushing by the time I went to bed. But I didn’t mind in the least.

CAN YOU SEE RIGHT THROUGH ME? - YMCULC
all the king's horses, all the king's men, couldn’t put me together again
( the archer ; taylor swift )
marguerite ( maggie ) brynn hall, the gentle bad-ass
“ show me a hero and i’ll write you a tragedy. ”
― f. scott fitzgerald
– BASIC INFORMATION –
» full name: marguerite brynn hall
» nicknames: maggie, mags, margie
» age: twenty seven ( at time of snap ), thirty two ( at time of blip )
» birthday: january eighth, nineteen-ninety-one, ten fifty-five in the morning
» birthplace: philadelphia, pennsylvania
» zodiac sign: capricorn sun, libra moon, aries ascendent
» current residence: new york, new york
» gender: cis female
» occupation: social worker for the stark relief foundation displaced children division, later avenger trainee
– HEALTH –
» physical health: overall, maggie is in excellent health. she works out most weekday mornings and tends to eat a balanced diet. she doesn’t drink too often or smoke at all. she knows that her health conscious habits stem from her need to control everything that she is able to but that doesn’t stop her from being set in her ways.
» scars: she has several small scars from various bumps and scrapes but there is a sizeable scar on the front of her left shoulder from a car accident while she was a freshman in college. a driver t-boned her small sedan in an intersection when she was on her way home from a final exam. when she woke up in the hospital, with both of her parents at her bedside, she had stitches stretching approximately three inches from her clavicle towards her upper arm.
» broken (any) bones: surprisingly, despite being quite active, maggie hasn’t ever broken a bone. she’s quite graceful from taking dance classes since she could walk until she graduated high school.
– MENTAL HEALTH –
» extrovert or introvert: since getting older, maggie has become comfortable with the knowledge that she is a relatively private person. when she was younger, she enjoyed being in crowds however, she now tends to retract into her shell when surrounded by too many people.
» logical or creative: maggie is incredibly logical; she is very formulaic in her thought patterns. when it comes to problem solving, maggie has all but got it down to a science which can be effective but she’d be incorrect to say it was without fault.
» optimist or pessimist: neither term seems to describe the woman very well; she feels as though she’d call herself a realist. the world has let her down more times than she can count so she makes an effort to always adjust her expectations towards the most-likely event.
» phobias / fears:
» problems: maggie was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and generalized anxiety disorder when she was sixteen. she goes through occasional bouts of depression but she doesn’t find it to be chronic. though undiagnosed, following the death of her parents, she experiences the effects of post-traumatic stress.
– PERSONALITY –
» goals / dreams: maggie has always wanted to improve the world around her. when she was a little girl, she told her parents that she wanted to be the first doctor to go to space. when she found out that she’d have to be in space for months at a time, she quickly changed her plans. the brain always fascinated her and so she dove headfirst into her newfound passion. following the deaths of her parents, maggie wanted to help others like she wished that she had been and so she, once more, switched gears and went into social work.
» quirks / habits: maggie is a creature of habit. each morning, she wakes up and opens the curtains around the house before pouring herself a cup of cold brew coffee with cinnamon syrup and oat milk. she makes her bed and begins her day. when she gets home from work, she turns on her fairy lights and fans before removing her makeup and changing in to cozy clothes. as for quirks, maggie wouldn’t say she has any but her friends would be quick to point out her concentration face-- whenever she gets deep in to a hard task, her eyebrows screw up tightly and her lips purse. she doesn’t like to look in mirrors when the room is dark, she only gets out of bed on the left side, and she habitually sings in the shower even when she isn’t home alone.
» likes: precipitative weather like rain storms or snow ( especially thunderstorms ), vinyl records, lighting candles and allowing them to light the room, cooking or baking anything from scratch, old books with notes in the margin from an owner long forgotten, astronomy and any associated phenomena ( especially eclipses and meteor showers ), fleetwood mac and other classic rock icons, acts of service from loved ones, dogs with smushed faces, taylor swift, watching films (or rewatching films, whether new or old), freshly brewed tea, watching the sun set and staying awake to see it rise again, wisteria vines twisting around a fence, ‘casablanca’, f. scott fitzgerald novels, anything that is a dusty shade of sage green, tom hanks, vanilla bean ice cream (not french vanilla), using a polaroid camera to capture a moment, iced coffee with cinnamon, the beach during winter when the northern shores get a little bit icy, long drives at night with the windows down, sitting on the roof in a companionable silence with a loved one,  the color of deep maroon rust, cozy throw blankets and an unnecessary amount of pillows on the couch and bed
» dislikes: too much physical touch, indifference or apathy in the face of injustice, the deafening sound of crickets and cicadas at night, showing any signs of vulnerability, open-toed shoes, powdery or floral scents, olives, thin pillows, overhead lighting (lamps only, thank you very much), lack of a routine, being unable to read situations and prepare adequately, not feeling in control of any situation, harlequin novels, ladybugs and any other insects, disorganization (physically or emotionally.)
» flaws: she feels the need to always be the strong one that she often doesn’t allow herself the freedom to feel without pushing it down. she has a habit of not letting people in, especially people who are new to her, and even when she does, she is always terrified that she’ll lose them like she’s lost most other people that she loved. she is a control freak and can sometimes be a little boss.
– FAMILY –
» parents:       ; phillip hugh hall ( father / pierce brosnan )      ; allison marie hall née clark ( mother / jamie lee curtis )
» maternal grandparents:      ; richard ernest clark ( grandfather / tony curtis )      ; virginia ruth clark née franklin ( grandmother / janet leigh )
» paternal grandparents:      ; hugh alexander hall ( grandfather / kris kristofferson )      ; marguerite joan hall née green ( grandmother / ellen burstyn )
» sibling(s): n/a
» children: n/a
– APPEARANCE –
» height: five feet, two inches
» weight: one hundred fifteen pounds
» eyes: maggie’s eyes are one of her most striking features. the espresso brown orbs are speckled with golden flecks; they’re a rounded, almost almond shape.
» hair: her hair is chestnut brown and it has a tendency to gleam copper and slightly golden when the light reflects off of it. for the majority of her life, she had a tendency of keeping the gentle waves cropped into a side-parted, blunt bob that rested just above her shoulders. she typically wore her hair straight or blown out. following the snap, she allowed it to grow out beyond its typical length. she keeps it trimmed to just below her shoulder blades with a set of wispy curtain bangs to compliment the natural waves that she now maintains.
» face and complexion: maggie has a light skin tone that tans in the sun. she has no freckles on her face but has quite a few down her chest and arms; none of them are very dark. she has a round face which can almost be cherubic but as she’s gotten older, she has developed a sharp jawline that makes her look more mature despite her stature. her rounded almond eyes are lined with thick, dark lashes. she has a small button nose that pinches minutely at its tip as it turns slightly upwards. her brows are full and straight with only a slight arch. she has full cheeks with small dimples that frame her smile. maggie’s lips are typically tinted a red berry shade; her bottom lip is slightly more voluminous than its top counterpart which is home to a sharp cupid’s bow.
» build: maggie is petite, to say the least. she stands just slightly over five feet tall and weighs just over one hundred pounds. though slim, her figure is a narrow hourglass. despite her size, she’s quite agile and strong. years of channeling all of her emotions in to ballet as a child caused a habit that has yet to die. when she feels the need to get rid of excess emotion, she runs or attends a fitness class to channel that away.
» defining marks: when she was eighteen, maggie and her best friend poppy got matching tattoos. on the inside of her left wrist, there is a small crescent moon to match a sun on poppy’s. following her parents death, she got a second tattoo and on the inside of her upper arm, close to the crook of her elbow, there is one of two ravens perched on a branch. several months after the blip, she got another tattoo. on her right side, on her ribs under her bra-line, there’s a small star housed within four concentric circles.
» dress style: maggie’s fashion sense is on the border between classic and trendy. she doesn’t stray too far away from her comfort zone or wear too many patterns. she tends to stick to jewel tones and neutrals. for her work, her style tends to be business casual-- typically a blouse with a skirt or wide legged trousers and a heel. when she’s at home, an oversized sweater and leggings or pajama shorts are her go-to uniform. if she’s out running errands, she loves a flowy skirt or a pair of mom jeans with one of her dad’s old, classic band tees. her shoes are typically a revolving door of plain keds or converse, ankle boots, or a small heel.
» faceclaim: jenna louise coleman
– ROMANTIC & SEXUAL –
» marital status: she is unmarried.
» sexual preference: although maggie is primarily heterosexual, she’s never been closed off to the idea of dating anyone of the same gender if she found that she was attracted to them.
» ever had sex: she had sex for the first time when she was a freshman in college; it was with her boyfriend at the time, nicholas gray. as she’s gotten older, she has had a variety of companions-- some were romantic partners, several one-night-stands, and two attempted friends-with-benefits arrangements.
» opinion on sex: maggie isn’t ashamed to say that she enjoys sex and the freeing feeling that comes with it.
» opinion on relationships: although she likes the idea of a relationship, maggie’s fear of not being in control makes it difficult to maintain one. before the snap, she had only been in one long-term relationship which she abruptly ended after the death of her parents. she found that it was easier to try and turn off her feelings than to deal with them as everything in her life changed. since graduating with her second degree, maggie has been trying to open herself back up to dating and the possibility of a relationship.
» turn ons: the feeling of someone brushing her hair off of her face, being praised, bravery, kindness, interlacing fingers when holding hands, a genuine smile, sincerity, strong hands, bright eyes, taller men, a strong jawline, delicate kisses that gradually deepen into something more, kisses down the neck, deep conversations and debates, cologne that isn’t overpowering
» turn offs: sleazy behavior, apathy towards important issues, party-scene demeanor, bragging, lying, being late, ill-fitting clothes, lacking ambition or drive for moving forward
» past relationships:       ; nicholas gray ( first love / ben barnes )
» current relationship:      ; n/a
» future relationship:       ; steve rogers ( tbd / chris evans )      ; bucky barnes ( tbd / sebastian stan )
– FRIENDSHIP –
» big group of friends or several close friends: maggie would rather have a smaller quantity of people in her life with better quality relationships than to have a large group of friends that she feels as though she doesn’t know.
» best friend: maggie was a relatively lonely child; she spent a lot of her time reading and imagining her life in other worlds. she had some friends but none that ever ventured further than the occasional hangout. when she was a freshman in highschool, she sat next to poppy stewart on their first day of orientation and the two have been inseparable ever since.
» ever lied to a friend: she’s told white lies when necessary but she’s never lied about something earth-shattering.
» the most horrible thing they did to a friend: when maggie broke up with nicholas, she left him a letter on his pillow before she left his apartment one morning. she avoided his calls afterwards and didn’t speak to him for several weeks until he came to her apartment to try and work things out. later in her life, maggie felt extremely guilty that she wasn’t able to confide in poppy about steve’s plan until after he had already left.
» list of friends -      ; poppy stewart ( best friend / annie murphy / @petalsofpoppys )      ; pepper potts ( boss, friend / gwenyth paltrow )      ; tony stark ( boss, family friend / robert downey jr )      ; natasha romanoff ( co-worker, close friend / scarlett johansson )      ; steve rogers ( co-worker, friend, boyfriend / chris evans )      ; bucky barnes ( friend, lover, boyfriend / sebastian stan )      ; sam wilson ( friend / anthony mackie )      ; wanda maximoff ( future friend / elizabeth olsen )      ; monica rambeau ( future friend / teyonah parris )
– MORALITY –
» ever been drunk: the first time that maggie got drunk was her senior year of high school; she was at a house party with poppy and she since vowed to never touch any drink with ‘punch’ in the name, ever again.
» lied to a significant other: following the death of her parents, maggie never disclosed her tumultuous emotions to nicholas and so he was blindsided when she left him on one random morning. with an apologetic  note of a goodbye, maggie made sure no trace was left behind when she slipped from the apartment in to the warm summer breeze.
» cheated on significant other: maggie would never cheat on a partner. she would rather end things than break someone’s trust in her.
» gotten into a fight: she’s never gotten in to a physical altercation but following her move in to the avenger’s compound, natasha and steve helped to train her tactically. after she moved back to the city, bucky takes up the position of being her trainer.
» deepest regret: not telling her parents how much she looked up to both of them before they died.
» religion: maggie was not raised to be religious. her parents always emphasized the importance of trying to be morally good whenever you could. she identifies as an atheist.

miasswier’s ultimate glee ranking: no 1
1: The Quarterback
Tumblr media
Written by: Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuk (with special assistance from Lea Michele) Directed by: Brad Falchuk
Overall Thoughts: This episode is not number one because it’s my all-time favourite. It’s not number one because I watch it again and again. It’s not number one because my favourite characters have storylines, or because the music is particularly incredible. No, this episode is number one because I have never seen Glee get anything so damn right. The whole way this episode is structured is emotionally devastating, an incredible catharsis for both the actors and the fans. It’s been years, and I still weep watching it. There’s a reason it’s the highest ranked episode on IMDB, and the most well-known. I’ve always said that when Glee does things right, it does them right. This was completely and totally right.
What I Like:
The choice to focus on six characters, while still giving everybody else a little bit of something to do. I find Glee is always at it’s best when it keeps the focus small, while still allowing for the ensemble elements to bleed in. Getting to specifically watch Kurt, Santana, Puck, Will, and Rachel’s grief process was gutting, but worked so perfectly.
This is one of the most genuine episodes of Glee, in terms of acting, because a lot of what is being seen is not actually acting. It’s the actors grieving, and it packs such an emotional punch.
That scene where all the newbies are putting stuff around Finn’s locker and Kitty says “this is kind of cheesy” and Rachel says “no it’s not, it’s beautiful” is so fucking powerful.
Honestly, every scene with Rachel in it is so goddamn powerful. I always watch and feel so much respect for Lea Michele for doing this.
The scene with Kurt, Burt, and Carole is also a stand-out for me. It does frustrate me a little bit that they tried to re-write the history of the iconic and really important scene from “Theatricality” (though not enough to list it as a negative to this episode), but it works in the context because that’s how things happen. When somebody dies, you want to see the best in them, and that often causes you to change the way you viewed things before (and Burt’s realization that it was less about Finn and more about himself is like, ouch). But really, Carole is the one who steals the scene. She makes me sob so damn hard. The emotion is so raw. I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
The end scene with Will crying over the jacket was the absolute perfect way to end the episode. We finally get to see everybody grieve, and it feels (not to reuse words, but) cathartic. He held it in all episode long, but couldn’t any longer. We don’t have to either. We don’t have to be strong. We can hurt, and we can express that hurt. It’s okay.
What I Don’t Like:
The scene with Tina in Emma’s office always struck me as poorly thought out. Mainly because it’s the only scene Jenna Ushkowitz really gets in this episode, and she isn’t really allowed to show her grief, because they wanted to make at least one attempt at humour in this episode, and obviously it had to be made at Tina’s expense.
This isn’t about the episode itself, but ever since all the MS stuff happened, I feel very little emotion watching Puck’s scenes in this episode. Usually I can separate Puck from MS, but because this episode is so raw, and so much more the actors than the characters, I have a hard time sympathizing with him. But like I said, this is not as much about the episode as it is about my own personal feelings about that situation.
The fact that this episode had to be made at all.
Songs:
Seasons of Love: An amazing way to star the episode.
I’ll Stand by You: I’m so thankful that they reprised this iconic Finn song, and that they had Mercedes do it. I remember when this episode came out, people were confused about why Mercedes was singing it, but I think it made sense. Mercedes and Finn were always closer than people seemed to believe.
Fire and Rain: It does make me a little sad that this is the only thing Sam and Artie get to do in this episode, but I feel like their moment (especially Sam’s) comes more in “City of Angels”, and this is powerful enough to forgive them not having a larger role.
If I Die Young: This scene is so gutting. For some reason, I always think of this vs “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and it’s just… fuck me. It’s so emotional.
No Surrender: I always felt this was the weakest number in this episode, and, well, as I’ve already said, I have a bit of a hard time with the Puck aspects of this episode.
Make You Feel My Love: Fuck, this song. The second I hear the opening chords I start crying. I’m a fucking mess. Absolutely heartbreaking and raw as hell. So incredibly done by Lea Michele. Fuck.
Final Thoughts: I know it’s a bit of a sad episode to end the ranking on, but every time I considered putting an episode higher up than this one, I couldn’t do it. This is the absolute best episode that Glee has ever put out. They did absolute justice to both Cory and Finn, and it’s devastating to watch, but also cathartic as hell (I’m sorry I keep using this word) and just overall incredibly well done. Bravo, Glee. Bravo.
