Critical comment I found on TF2chan regarding the plot
Anonymous 04/03/15(Fri)00:49 (2015!)
No. 14411
“I'm sad+mad that TF2 jumped the shark on its plot and character development. Remember back in the day when TF2's absurd humour was laced with something dark and visceral, when the plotholes were a statement rather than a gimmick, and the mercenaries tore your soul in half because they were both terrifying and huggable?
[ED: Jumping the shark: When a show tries to avoid the inevitable by doing something so unlikely, silly and absurd to remain entertaining or maintain novelty, especially after reaching its peak.]
Seems like in the past couple of years Valve's been making nothing but stupid silly updates with very little substance beyond being stupid and silly--and neglecting all the other things that TF2 used to be. It's just stupid silly hats and stupid silly game modes and stupid silly weapons and stupid silly ducks.
It's like every punchline now is "look how many fucks we don't give" but that's the problem, Valve. You don't give any fucks and you're letting your games go to shit. An "I don't care" joke from Valve is like a racist joke coming from Mel Gibson. It's not even a joke, it's just shitty. (ED: racimsm!??wtf!)
I'm sorry, my nostalgia boner is really starting to ache. I'll be in my bunk.”
I’ve a couple more comments from other sites but other than those, I never see people criticise TF2 in story, and/or address the culprits that have allowed this to happen.
One day I’ll probably post some huge conspiracy board after viewing through like 100 videos on this subject because if anything, the game won’t be the death of itself, it will be the integrity and reputation of its story that will finally kill itself

I am still terrified of shipping Scout × Pauling because i'm afraid some idiot will come @ me like "nooo shes a lesbian!! You're being--" n im like. Yeah for a lot of people she is but then again the expiration date stuff & her agreeing to go on a date with scout. Just let people enjoy what they like man. Some guys just want to force all o that bullshit on other people and they all fight over it and I'm here like what's the point of sharing stuff anymore if the friendly part of the fandom is meticulously being picked and erased from existance by other people who think their headcanons are the best and are imposing it
Poorly worded but ya get my point i hope.cheers m8
Nah yeah that's how I feel. Something something ship and let ship, literally none of this matters IRL and people need to stop arguing about fictional fucken characters. Who cares
Even if Jay Pinkerton confirmed her as a lesbian (on Twitter, not even in canon), Jay doesn't speak for Valve. He wrote the comics and Jungle Inferno, he had no hand in Expiration Date which outright ships the two on-screen and has Pauling enthusiastically agree to a second date with Scout, nor Pauling's prior writing (such as her newspaper clipping where she's seeking a romantic partner and never specifies the necessary gender of said partner). If Valve itself comes out and says Pauling is strictly a lesbian then maybe I'll change my tune, but I'm not taking a standalone writer's word on something he didn't even write into canon, and until that's done or Valve itself says so, I don't see why people can't just let people fucken enjoy things.
It just breeds toxicity and people wonder why no one wants to interact and shit. It's because fandom jumps on anyone who goes against the grain and drives them out through toxicity and hostility. And it's sad to see cuz I love this fandom, but the fandom never seems to love itself or its artists/authors/etc
ETA: Also for what it's worth, I never really see this issue for SniperPauling. Just ScoutPauling, which is weird. Also while I'm an author I don't write anything for Pauling ships. I think her and Scout make a cute couple but that's about as far as my shipping goes. I'm really not that much into shipping, so all of this being said and judged as an outsider looking in and how I've seen people attack each other. I'd rather stay on the sidelines

Round 1 Poll 77: Lesbian
Worm/Parahumans submission:
Lisa Wilbourn being a lesbian, not aroace. She says in Worm that she's not interested in relationships, and by the time of Ward she realizes that she was just using her power as an excuse to not wonder why she didn't feel the feelings everyone said she was supposed to feel. (Not her exact wording, maybe I'm projecting a little, but she clarified that it wasn't her power. It was as close to a canon ""I'm aroace"" statement as one can make without using the words aromantic or asexual.) I've pretty much given up on stopping people from shipping Lisa, even though the characters people ship her with all have better wlw ships, but can you at least stop pretending there's any canon support for shipping the aroace queen of Brockton Bay?
Portal submission:
The idea that Chell is both mute and that she’s lesbian for GLaDOS like, okay, fine, Chell is meant to be a proxy for the player to project themselves onto, that’s fair, but the fans keep treating it like it’s canon when it’s not. Just look at what the developers have to say: Interviewer: ”If all the test subjects were prisoners, does that make Chell a murderer? Is that why she’s so good at it?” Erik Wolpaw: “No, she’s just super focused. I always thought of her as pissed all the time, that’s why she never says anything. For Gordon, there’s no real reason why he doesn’t say anything, but Chell doesn’t like these robots and doesn’t even want to dignify their shenanigans with a response. She’s just storming through this place PISSED.” - Portal 2 Official Guidebook Erik Wolpaw: “My personal idea is that Chell can talk, but she’s just kind of pissed the whole time. She just doesn’t like robots. She doesn’t want to give them the satisfaction of ever responding to their nonsense.” (https://archive.is/20130104035703/http://arts.nationalpost.com/2011/04/19/qa-with-portal-2-writers-erik-wolpaw-and-jay-pinkerton/#selection-2297.0-2361.55) Erik Wolpaw: “I always had this feeling of Chell is a character who’s just pissed off the entire time and having to do this, and just not giving them the pleasure of saying anything. She probably can talk.” (https://web.archive.org/web/20110717195941/http://www.vg247.com/2011/03/14/wolpaw-players-dont-care-about-portals-chell/) The Escapist: ""Wolpaw doesn't feel that people are actually invested in Chell as a character, and instead relate to the game world through her shell as themselves. Wolpaw admits that Chell can definitely talk, but added: ""She just chooses not to, what with the robots all being dicks. Why give them the satisfaction?"" Miss Pauling from Team Fortress 2 is confirmed to be a lesbian! A lot of people still don't believe it though so today I'm gonna show you guys all the information about it because I think it's cool :]
Any sources are linked in the text (underlined) if you need them.
Cw: nudity (from Zhanna and Soldier in the TF2 comics, as well as Scout's mom in Meet the Spy (you'll see why that's important). Its not graphic but I thought to give a warning anyway just in case!)
The only confirmation we have against her being lesbian is this post from the TF2 comic artist Makani, saying there was a point in time where Pauling was going to be revealed at dating one of the other mercenaries in Expiration Date.
Tumblr media
The idea was scrapped and the mercenary she was supposedly dating was never revealed.
Now onto the lesbian implications! The most direct acknowledgement of this is the fact Jay Pinkerton, a writer at Valve and main writer of the TF2 comics, confirmed Pauling was a lesbian but there were no female characters to ship her with yet.
Tumblr media
Most people when reposting this image leave out the bottom tweet which I think it's important to include because it addresses that things don't need to be directly shown to the audience to be true. Character sexualities can be implied or subtle and still exist. The tweet has since been deleted but I linked it above from a copy of it on the wayback machine.
Many people thought this was a joke but on Tumblr he's reposted and liked several posts of people arguing for Pauling's queerness (he liked some ScoutPauling posts too but it was way less than Pauling being a lesbian so I personally don't count that) which furthers that it's canon (should social media likes count? probably not! It's just that there's multiple being positive towards what he said that he interacted with so the opinion feels more solidified).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And from the Makani post I'd mentioned earlier, she too referenced Jay's liking of the idea (this was before he publicly said anything though).
Tumblr media
Then there's the Teufort Reader, a page on the official TF2 website. It has ad listings from different characters. Both Pauling and Scout have listings for dates, but Scout enforces that the caller should be a woman while Pauling keeps who she is looking for genderless, meaning it doesn't necessarily have to be a man who calls. This could potentially go into the claim from the top that she's bisexual and not a lesbian.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jay Pinkerton confirmed that she wasn't looking for guys to date
Tumblr media
Now you may ask "What about Scout? Didn't she date him?" The teufort ads above explain other wise but even without it we never got confirmation that they were romantically dating. After Expiration Date the two may have gone on a "date" (date being Scout going on random jobs Miss Pauling has), but you can see in the comics that take place afterwards that they were never in reality romantically involved. And relating to what I said earlier she was supposed to be dating someone else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also comes off that way of being nonromantic in Miss Pauling's voice lines towards Scout. (These are copied from the official TF2 wiki but they're uploaded to youtube as well)
"Hey Scout. First, 'No' to whatever you're about to ask. I've got a job for you."
"Scout, Pauling here. Wrap up whatever you were bragging about and look at this."
"Scout, it's Pauling. Whatever stupid thing you're doing, stop it. I've got work."
"Scout, it's Pauling. I need something done quietly. Scout? Quietly."
"Engie, it's Pauling. Is Scout there? Cough if he's there. I've got a job for you. Not him."
[Scout: Oh, oh, and...(dice clatter)...not too shabby!] "Pauling here. I'm trying to teach Scout Gargoyles and Gravel. [Yeah!] Ugh, no Scout, there's no such thing as a Muscle Wizard." [Yeah whatever.] "No you can't beat an Orc by doing push-ups at it. Look, please, please put your shirt back on. Scout, stop flexing. Scout. Scout! Stop flexing."
"Hey did you know a gun show's a real thing? I'm at one with Heavy right now." [Heavy: Is perfect, this is gun.] Oh wow, what's the gauge on that? Yeah, Scout's been saying he's going to take me to one for years, but all he does is shove his stupid arms in my face. Anyway, I've got something for you."
Moving on from Scout with more voice line examples (which is mostly my interpretation) that I thought were potentially queer are in her Tough Break voice lines. In some she talks about going to many woman events which could be a hint at her sexuality, others she rejects male related stuff. Once again I copied these from the official TF2 wiki but you can hear them on youtube.
(whispering) "Hey, it's Pauling here. I'm at the Teufort Ladies Book Club and I'm the only one who hasn't actually read Belinda...so it's just about relationships, right? Guy meets girl, love stuff, happy ending? It's a good thing, right? I'm gonna tell everyone how it really, really brings the two as a couple."
"Hey's it's Pauling. Sorry for the noise, it's Ladies Night at the Cap Point, and I misunderstood what that meant." [Hey what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?] "I'm trying to get someone killed for money. Can you give me a second? Sorry about that. Anyway, take a look."
"He-hey, sorry about the reception, I'm on a ladies safari in the middle of a forest. Listen, a contract came in..." [I'm being mauled to death by a tiger! Ahhh!] "Lady, would you please keep it down! I'm on the phone!"
Another small example, once again more of my interpretation, is on a TF2 blog post from the website where the Administrator starts reading one of Miss Pauling's gun themed woman magazines. The blog post says:
"I found the answer, in all places, in one of the insipid gun-themed women's magazines Miss Pauling leaves lying around, where I stumbled on an article about self-improvement."
You could tie this to a historical context because the 60s and 70s had a rise in LGBTQ oriented magazines, many lesbian ones created in 1971 and running through the 80s. It's quite possible that Pauling would read them as Team Fortress 2 takes place around 1968 to 1973.
The folder Miss Pauling has in the Gun Mettle update is labeled "Scout's mom" meaning she has the nsfw of Scout's mom that Spy lays out in Meet the Spy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next section goes more into the comics. There are many panels that could imply Pauling's growing liking towards her new teammate, Zhanna. In this first image I think it shows where the liking began, from Zhanna talking to Pauling, making her blush in the last frame (which probably is embarrassment, but someone pointed it out to me as a possibility so I decided to add it).
Tumblr media
Next is towards the end of the comics. Zhanna and Soldier fight naked, covered in honey as a fighting strategy, Pauling and Scout looked over to them doing so. Scout is disgusted and leaves, while Pauling is interested and decides to stay and catch up later. (Note how Zhanna is closest to them). Panels are edited to be side by side and cropped a bit for image space.
Tumblr media
Next is towards later on when Pauling is calling the Administrator and Zhanna wonders what she's doing. Pauling then confides in her with her problems, afterwards saying she sees Zhanna as part of the team now after Zhanna gives her advice. She's comfortable around Zhanna.
Tumblr media
A few pages later, Pauling's disgusted by Soldier and him being naked, meaning he was not likely who she was looking at.
Tumblr media
Another thing is that people think that Pauling could've developed a crush on the Administrator in their time together over the years Pauling worked for her. She made comments in the comics on how Helen (Administrator) was "not so bad when you get to know her". We also learn Pauling had trusted her the whole mission without knowing what Helen's plan was. Pauling was blindly following and trying to stay loyal to what Helen wanted because she thought Helen would have a place for her at the end.
In Richter Overtime's video on the possible TF2 comic 7 leak from 2018, there was a scene where Pauling allegedly kisses the Administrator. This is in no way canon, but just in case it is revealed that something like that is in the final comic, I just think it would be good to note.
youtube
Ashly Burch, Miss Pauling's voice actress, came out as pansexual in July 2022, noting that she has played many LGBTQ characters.
(Also she was a writer on Expiration Date. This means Pauling not liking Scout due to being lesbian could've totally been intentional! Along with her playing as LGBTQ characters, she's also written for them! Like Life is Strange and Mythic Quest).
Tumblr media
The Romana version of the official TF2 wiki has most of these points on Pauling being gay on it. The link goes to the wayback machine because that section on the updated site got removed. I know this part doesn't really mean anything because it's just restating what I've already used but I think it's cool to have a semi-official outlet list these.
"According to a tweet by Jay Pinkerton, writer of TF Comics, Miss Pauling is gay.
This may be why she insists the Administrator is 'not so bad when you get to know her'.
Part of a voice line added in the Tough Break update has her discuss an interest in Ladies' Night while fending off a man: 'Sorry for the noise, it's Ladies Night at the Cap Point, and I misunderstood what that meant.' [Hey what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?] 'I'm trying to get someone killed for money.'
Another voice line excerpt from Tough Break, when she's at the Ladies' Book Club: '...so it's just about relationships, right? Guy meets girl, love stuff, happy ending? It's a good thing, right?'
No other Valve employee has either confirmed nor denied this claim to date (The tweet was made June 19, 2015), leading many to believe that Mr. Pinkerton's tweet was just a way to inflame the community. However, since Mr. Pinkerton is a lead writer of the comics and his word is trustworthy, there is no reason not to accept this at face value.
The tweet was made in response to a fan asking if Scout and Miss Pauling would become canon, and was preceded with Mr. Pinkerton stating he had "better plans" for her. This could imply that she may meet a love interest in an upcoming installment."
In relation to more queer history, purple is a color often associated with lesbians. I know TF2 used purple to mix the red and blue teams but I think purple coincidentally fitting Pauling being gay is also nice!
And finally, I'm taking this from someone else's post, but you can color-pick the lesbian flag colors off of one of Pauling's post cards!! (And bonus, you can color-pick the genderfluid flag off of her Halloween design!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's it! That's all the information I have so far, compiled for everyone's viewing and reference pleasure :]
Please let me know if I missed anything and I'll add it! Thank you for reading, if you made it this far, that's awesome. I'll be updating this post occasionally to fix formatting issues, so don't be confused if things change! I hope I can be of help with your Valve lore and information. And if you haven't seen it, I have a list compiling all of Valve's queer characters!

I LOVE YOUR ART STYLE SM❤❤❤
But I'm also a bit curious if your miss p and medic ship is platonic or romantic?? srry if this sounds weird, I'm just don't like shipping scout or miss p with the other merc's because of the age gap or the fact that miss p in a lesbian (except for sniper x scout ig) I know ppl say that they're all adults but it just doesn't sit right to me I'm sorry
1. pauling is not canonically a lesbian, it was a joke tweet by the comic writer jay pinkerton in which he quickly dismissed it. apart from that, she wasnt confirmed to be a lesbian in-game, in the comics, nothing.
2. yes, they do have an age gap. however, I headcanon miss pauling to be in her 30s, while medic is in his 50s. she is 30.
3. yes. my medicpauling is strictly romantic. if you're weirded out, my content is not for you and I suggest you leave. thanks.

Actually, more info about the development of the game’s ending:
"A particular point of struggle was the game's ending. They knew from the first game that it was important that the final challenge not be the most difficult of the game, but rather focus on story. But early versions were terrible, and it was getting dangerously late in production when they still had no idea how to end it. Flopsweat soaked meetings, Wolpaw explained, had the writing team failing to get anywhere with a finish that was good enough. One version saw an incredibly anticlimactic finale, fighting the corrupted Wheatley, in which turning the machine off involved uttering the word "Yes". Chell was to speak! Just one word, but a word that would end everything. "And it sucked," said Wolpaw. But then, strangely enough, it was some goof endings that saved them.
Playtesting the first game had revealed that there were some players willing to die in the game's false ending. As they descended toward the fire pit they accepted their fate, and were perfectly happy to let the game end there, before the final third's dramatic escape sequence. Which inspired the team to put in opportunities like this into the sequel. A number of points where the game could just end if the player let it, even only minutes in. There would be a song for each, appropriate to the nature of the death, and frankly that sounds brilliant. And one of these planned endings was to have you be abandoned on the moon.
A scene was going to have a crack in the ceiling, through which the moon was visible. A player adventurous enough to try firing a portal that way would find themselves transported into the vacuum and asphixiate, after which a song about how sad it was to die on the moon would play. And it was this that they finally realized was a big enough, and funny enough idea to put on the end."
— “The Portal 2 That Could Have Been” an article from Rockpapershotgun
Anyway, the point is that the devs weren’t very focused in making Wheatley’s character motivations consistent with his established cowardly and vulnerable personality and Stephen Merchant ended up doing a lot of the legwork when it came to giving Wheatley the emotional depth that he had during the boss battle:
"We certainly let him chew on the material, and develop it. If there was a way that his character would say it differently, we definitely gave him the freedom to explore. One of the most surprising things is that there’s a bit of range to Stephen Merchant that I don’t want to spoil. But he’s more than just funny at times, and it was a real eye-opener to me that he had this much range."
- Jay Pinkerton

A year and a half later, two planes flew into the World Trade Center. Irony was supposed to have perished along with the nearly 3,000 lives. Time’s Roger Rosenblatt declared “The End of the Age of Irony,” with its “oh-so-cool” ironists and their “vain stupidity.” The esteemed civil-rights historian Taylor Branch wrote in the LA Times that the attacks would turn “a whole generation against cynicism,” and Gerry Howard, the editorial director of Broadway Books said, “I think somebody should do a marker that says irony died on 9-11-01.” James Pinkerton of Newsday even declared a victory for “sincerity, patriotism, and earnestness.” And perhaps most famously, Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter observed, “There’s going to be a seismic change. I think it’s the end of the age of irony.”
Thankfully, none of this came to pass. The resulting eight years of George W. Bush, domestic wiretapping, continued terrorist threats, color-coded threat levels, religious extremism, Jesus Camp, The Apprentice, and the darkest of legal loopholes that permitted the CIA to torture people in the Slovakian hinterlands, showed that without a good measure of irony we would all hang ourselves. Luckily, there arose Get Your War On, The Daily Show, South Park, and the Colbert Report, all of which felled the new earnestness and “patriotism” with much-needed, morally-engaged satire, a genre long and supremely functioning in English and American letters. Irony as a form of engaged social critique became an effective weapon against the deadly earnestness that guided not only the new American seriousness but just as well the two planes that flew into the World Trade Center. “The worse vice of a fanatic,” wrote Oscar Wilde, “is his sincerity.”
—R. Jay Magill Jr., from “We’ve Been Arguing About Irony Vs. Sincerity for Millenia” (The Atlantic, November 2012)

Today I realized that in December there was quite a lot of talk about the creation of Portal 3.
Lots of articles saying "Valve employees have an amazing idea about Portal 3".
*big wall of text*
And then-
"Yeah, Jay [Pinkerton] and I have an idea that we think is pretty awesome for what would happen, generally speaking,"
... Why did you even create an article? YOU DON'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING.

Lot of Valve news :)
1.) Portal RTX released December 8th, since then people have found many secrets hidden around the game such as codes to alternate cube skins and old signs becoming readable. Things are still being found so I'll link them as I see them!!!

2.) Portal 2 was updated and we now have the uncompressed radio jingle!!!

3.) In an interview with DYKG recently, Erik Wolpaw said he was open to doing Portal 3 and started writing a rough story with Jay Pinkerton. They were going to see if they could turn it into a project but Valve is busy at the moment so they aren't able to yet.

4.) Unfortunately Valve didn't announce anything at the Game Awards (even though they did give out a bunch of Steam Decks) but they're still working on Neon Prime and it is apparently Citidel which is the newest Half-Life game they'd been developing.

5.) The Swissmass update has released for TF2! And this month they've been releasing updates like crazy (4 as of the 10th!) And today and tomorrow (10th + 11th) TFConnect is holding charity livestreams with the voice actors! They are also giving away various signed TF2 merch, biggest one being a TF2 monopoly board!!

6.) This one isn't as much as Valve news but Turtle Rock Studio's Left 4 Dead spinoff Back 4 Blood had a new DLC release which is pretty cool :)
