Memoirs of a Man’s Maiden Years by N. O. Body - "I was born a boy, raised as a girl. . . . One may raise a healthy boy in as womanish a manner as one wishes, and a female creature in as mannish; never will this cause their senses to remain forever reversed."
So writes the pseudonymous N. O. Body, born in 1884 with ambiguous genitalia and assigned a female identity in early infancy. Brought up as a girl, "she" nevertheless asserted stereotypical male behavior from early on. In the end, it was a passionate love affair with a married woman that brought matters to a head. Desperately confused, suicidally depressed, and in consultation with Magnus Hirschfeld, one of the most eminent and controversial sexologists of the day, "she" decided to become "he."
N. O. Body was identified as Karl M. Baer (he/him).

Skirt wasn’t really the issue, not for me.
The issue was the first word. Girls. Here’s the thing: I may seem like a girl, but on the inside, I’m a boy.

A cycle ends and begins
Right. 2018 ends today, and as I sit at my window, sipping Carribean rum and listening to jazz noir, fireworks, and the neighbourhood pray and sing the year to a close, I find myself exploring varied emotions. It’s been a surreal year of unpredictable adventure and yet, here I sit feeling good and grateful. (Must be the rum).
I have a host of Writers to thank for the magic they poured into my soul through The Griffin’s Inkpot. Writers and their voices feed this soul, this wandering nomadic spirit. I know I’m not the only one who connected with the poems, stories, and essays that flowed through this experimental blog. Readers. Readers added that flavour and sense of subtle community which made the whole experience of publishing voices on The Griffin’s Inkpot in 2018 sublime.
And so, I end this restless year saying a heartfelt thank you to the writers and readers who shared their magic with The Griffin’s Inkpot. I wish you all a rewarding new year!

Books read in 2022 #23 - “Bond, James Bond” by Brad Gilmore & Mile Kalinowski
Clearly written with affection for the Bond movie series, and I know from their social media posts that both authors are enthusiastic fans. I really wanted to enjoy this book and any volume on 007 that includes chapters looking positively at the contributions of each of the Bond actors; as well as covering the influence of Bond video games, comics, and even the James Bond Jr. cartoon seemed like it would be an enjoyable read.
Unfortunately the book is peppered with so many basic factual errors that I ended up working through it pencil in hand writing marginal notes. The text also shows a lack of awareness of the details of the Fleming source material and the broader world of Bond scholarship. -A nice try, but disappointing.
