It's all academic darlin' PART 2/10

12k+ Hangster AU. Updating 2-3 parts per week and will be finished by 31st January 2024. (Each part is ~1500 words).

Bradley is a professor but living his best life with IceMav parents. Jake is a pilot. Maverick sort-of tries (and fails) to play matchmaker, so he tries again. Touch of epistolary and sprinkling of one-sided unknown/mistaken-identity.

(Note for later parts/chapters - Ice uses sign to communicate at home, I’m typing it like sign is English despite the fact that I know it isn’t (while NZSL is my third language, I have no working knowledge on the grammar useage in ASL).)

PART TWO

                The next morning he wakes up slowly. There’s music again, although quieter, and he can smell coffee. He’d gone to bed early last night, using the excuse of the long drive, because saying he was developing a pressing headache wasn’t something he wanted to mention. He showers and inspects his bruises in the mirror, presses gently on the cuts where the stitches were removed only two days ago. Nothing feels inflamed or more tender than what should be expected.

                He grabs a black Henley from his bag and pulls it on, only feeling very mild discomfit as he moves now. It’s looser and darker colored than what he usually wears, however his usual form fitting things were dragging across the stitches, catching on them. So, he’d succumbed to Phoenix buying him some shirts that didn’t show blood every time he reached too far when playing pool or rubbed his stitches. Not that it’s a problem now that they’re gone, but the shirt reminds him that someone cared enough to help him feel comfortable. Walking toward the kitchen he finds Bradley standing at the stove, poking at the contents of a pan. Whatever it is smells good, and he hopes that there’s the intent to share.

                “Mornin’,” he greets, his voice sounding rough.

                “Hey, morning. Help yourself to coffee, or there’s tea and stuff. I’ve made some breakfast. Sorry it’s a bit, uh, mixed. I’m just trying to get through the perishables so no one has to deal with the repercussions next time we visit.”

                Jake has a closer look at the pan and sees fried potatoes with some ham and egg thrown in along with some spinach and tomatoes, small sprinkling of cheese and it smells a perfect combination of crispy-salt-fat and his mouth is watering.

                “Smells good. Thanks. You didn’t have to.”

                “Seriously man, you turning up means I won’t have to gorge myself too much today to get through everything. I don’t want to have to come back to this place and find liquified vegetables in the fridge.”

                “Learnt that lesson the hard way huh?”

                “Unfortunately,” Bradley laughs and shakes his head ruefully.

                Jake takes a breath, a shaky smile making its way onto his face in response to the wide smile and crinkling eyes. Bradley smiles so easily, like it’s natural to just be smiley and friendly and simply… good natured. Jake would bet money he doesn’t get called an asshole on the regular. Unlike him. Considering he’s Mav’s son though he might just be hiding his more asshole-ish tendencies much like Jake is ensuring he doesn’t stray from the societal norms of being the most polite and accommodating of guests.

                Bradley is making him think though, maybe finding someone who is more mild mannered and edges on too polite would balance him out. It’s not what Jake usually finds attractive, but with the year at work he’s had maybe quiet, safe, and friendly… could make a nice change. Not that he’s in a hurry for any type of relationship, but he might table it for consideration for the future, because maybe coming back to the same place, the same person, has started to have some… appeal.

                “Did you sleep okay?”

                “Yeah, better than I expected,” Jake replies, and he’s assuming the combination of drive and headache had made his brain unable to formulate its semi-regular nightmare fodder. That’s what disrupts his sleep these days, not the location.

                “That’s good. Here,” Bradley says, passing him a plate piled high with food and moving towards the dining table with his own. “You won’t get this again sorry. I’m leaving early tomorrow, so I’ll probably be gone before you get up.”

                “It’s fine. I lived plenty long enough looking after myself, I’m sure I’ll survive a couple of weeks on my own here. I didn’t expect any cooked meals when I decided to come stay. Are you driving back?”

                “No. Well, partly I guess. I’ve got a plane at Fallon, so I’ll drive there and then fly back to San Diego. Perk of the job,” Bradley says, and he grins. Jake assumes it’s a reference to Mav’s connections, that he can store a plane at Fallon and use the runway and airspace for personal use. That’s one hell of a perk. The food tastes as good as it smells and Jake lets himself savor it, enjoys the novelty of food being cooked for him.

                “Actually, I have a favor to ask. Nothing major, just… can I use you phone later? I need to make a couple of calls. First one needs to be to Mav.”

                Jake agrees easily, it’s no issue for him. They do the washing up and Bradley continues to sing along to the music playing from a portable speaker. The man doesn’t seem to care that Jake is virtually a stranger, no embarrassment at all as he belts out the words to the song being played and tries to encourage Jake to sing along as well. Jake guesses he’s someone who is truly confident, which with a new Hawaiian shirt today, easy smile, clearly happy with whatever lot he has in his life… well, Jake guesses Bradley probably is.

                He’d probably be just as happy right now with or without Jake there, singing along to himself. He clearly doesn’t feel like he needs to impress Jake, and for once Jake feels a little unsettled. Unsure about how he should act with no crowd to play up his own abilities, someone he doesn’t need to harmlessly flirt with, it leaves him without a guide book of basic social interaction and he feels unmoored. He excuses himself to go and grab his phone from his room and thumbs through to Mav’s contact and puts the call through.

                “Hello. Pete Mitchell.”

                “Hey Mav, It’s Hangman.”

                “Hangman. Good to hear from you. Did you find the place alright?”

                “Yeah. Although Bradley wasn’t expecting me. He wants to talk to you actually.”

                “He wasn’t expecting you and he can’t call me himself,” Mav says flatly. “Let me guess. He lost another phone.”

Jake barks out a laugh, because hearing Mav’s disappointed tone and not have it aimed in any way toward him makes him feel like he’s in on a private joke. And maybe he can go with a teasing thing rather than a flirting thing if this is a thing. He walks back to find Bradley lounging on the sofa, looking at something on a tablet.

                “Yeah, fell in the lake,” Jake provides and Bradley’s eyes shoot up to meet his, narrowing as he realizes that he must already be talking to Mav.

                “Jesus. That kid. I swear he goes through a phone a year. Falling in the lake is probably one of the least exciting ways it’s happened. There’s been the top of a car, wing of a plane, compressor which was a stupid prank when he was an undergraduate… Can you put him on?”

                “Yeah, of course.”

                “Hi Dad…”

                Jake moves out onto the porch, trying to be polite and give Bradley some privacy, but the other man just follows, clearly not seeming to want or need privacy as he listens to his father talking. “Yeah, I know.” “Yes. Another one.” “Please stop keeping count.” “I’m good. How’s everyone at home?” “Okay. I’m glad to hear that. Tell him I fixed the smoker.” “Yeah.” “Ugh, I know.” “You’d think so wouldn’t you?” “What? Uh, good I guess?” “Got a whole bunch of stuff done.” “Yes Mav, all the important shit.” “Jesus Mav, I’ll be seeing you tomorrow, you can grill me then.” “Well, it’s not like my fridge is going to be overflowing with food, I thought the least you could do was feed me dinner.” “I knew you’d want to see me…”

                Jake listens to the one-sided conversation, can almost imagine Mav’s side. Not that he knows who else Mav might have at home, but the easy laughter and conversation makes part of him ache for what he doesn’t have with his own father. It’s a small passing ache now; he’d like to think he’s managed to work through the worst of it and accepted that the rest is something he can’t change; more importantly accepted it isn’t his responsibility to change. He listens again and the conversation has shifted to confirming times at the airstrip for take-off and he briefly wonders where the plane is stored in San Diego, because from the sounds of it Mav is picking Bradley up and Jake knows Mav has his own plane. Actually, maybe that’s the one Bradley flew here. Or they store their planes together.

                “Yeah, love you too. See you tomorrow. Did you want to talk to Jake again?”

                “Here…” Bradley says, and he passes Jake’s phone back to him before walking away back inside, leaving Jake with his privacy and he appreciates it.

                “Uh, hey Mav…”

                “Hey kid, I hope Bradley isn’t too much… you’re meant to be taking it easy and I know you didn’t break that drive up over two days like you were meant to.”

                “I’m good.”

                “You are good kid, and I want you to stay that way. It’s why we follow the orders of our doctors.”

                Jake snorts because he’s pretty sure Mav ignored half of the orders he heard prior to his retirement.

                “I’m here now, and I will do nothing but rest. Once Bradley leaves with his blisteringly bright shirts and music it’ll be the perfect place to rest and recover.”

                “He’ll get rid of both if you ask –”

                “Nah Mav, it’s kind of nice having someone not walkin’ around like I’m about to collapse any minute. He even cooked me breakfast this morning, he’s a good host.”

                Mav makes a weird choking sound and there’s mumbling he can’t make out before he clears his throat.

                “Well, I’m glad. I’m going to call you in a couple of days and check in with you, okay son?”

                “Yeah Mav, that’s fine.”

                Ending the call Jake slides his phone into his pocket, although he should really go and see if Bradley wants to use it to make the remainder of his necessary calls. He wonders what he’d have done if Jake hadn’t turned up. He should probably call home and check in with Javy and his siblings. He flicks off a couple of messages and lets them all know he’s okay. He stares out at the sparse scrubby forest, can see the shimmer of water off in the distance, looks at the lean-to stacked high with firewood and wonders what it would be like to have a place like this of his own. Somewhere he chose to be for longer than the length of a deployment, somewhere to return to. Not to one of his siblings. Not Javy. His and his alone.

                The bang of the screen door startles him and he turns to see Bradley, changed into running shorts and a loose tank.

                “I’m just going to go for a run before it gets too hot. Did you want to come with me?”

                Jake pulls a face, because normally he’d love to, but the jarring nature of running would not be great for his head. Today needs to be a rest day.

                “I’m meant to be taking it easy. Running probably isn’t the best idea.”

                The look that that new information gets him makes him wish he’d kept his mouth shut, but he’s feeling okay right now, needs to allow his body to recover after the drive yesterday if he wants to get back to flying as soon as he can. Bradley just nods his head though, accepting it without asking further questions.

                “Okay. I’ll show you the best place for swimming later, and the docking spot if you want to take a kayak or paddle board out.”

                “Sounds good,” Jake replies, failing to mention that he definitely won’t be kayaking or paddle boarding, although normally he’d love to do either of those things. Swimming sounds good though. He’s been aching to exercise in some form and swimming is something that he can gently start with. Maybe work up to the others.

                “I’ll be back in an hour or so. Make yourself at home.”

                He watches Bradley head off to what may or may not be a regularly run track before heading inside. He’s not going to snoop around, but he figures he can definitely go through the kitchen and maybe figure out what he could make for lunch. There’s an odd assortment of things, but he thinks he could cobble together some type of sandwich, but there’s no bread. Okay. This gives him something to do. He likes his bread too much not to have some on hand for a quick snack so he quickly searches for a recipe. No yeast that he can find, but there is beer, so he sets to work.

Hi, I don't know if this is asking too much, but Ichika recently posted some tweets and updated her biography with information about the use of her illustrations, I don't know if you could translate them to give us more context, mostly about how this would affect sites like the wiki or if it only literally refers to the fact that its reproduction for profit is prohibited.

EDIT: Just as a note--when she says "イラスト", while that does literally translate to "Illustration", it is a broad term that includes her sketches and concept art. It's not "Illustration" in the English sense meaning "pictures that illustrate scenes in a book".

What she's posted in the bio is simply that useage of her artwork without permission is prohibited. It mentions nothing about profit. I know the typical American attitude (as an American) is that "if it's not for profit then it's fine", but that's not actually the attitude of the rest of the world, so probably not safe to assume that's the case here.

From what I understand from the tweets, she's not referring to simple reposting of her artwork. Specifically, she says that while she's not giving the green light to do it, she understands that it's useful for reference purposes and whatnot and she doesn't mind it all that much. I think what she's objecting to is more like people using her work as raw material for their own artwork (like the trend of coloring in her illustrations, perhaps).

Whatever the case, she says that she understands she hasn't made any clear statements on the matter until now, so she's not applying it retroactively, but she just wanted to let people know this was her stance going forward.

I will say--I do think the fandom has a tendency to treat her work, both her private art and official Evillious art, like it's public domain. I haven't personally been on the tag in a while but I know that even a few years back there were a lot of people reposting her twitter art without credit or permission, or even signing their own name on it after making minor alterations like adding color or changing some of the lines. I don't know if her comments here are a response to that sort of thing (all the AI image scraping concerns probably has something to do with it too), but she is well within her rights to ask people not do that, so I hope they respect her wishes here.

not being able to understand experiences different to your own, and not caring about the effects of actions on others, are strongly correlated with being (independently) homophobic.

and this isn't just surface-level "it's mean to be homophobic" stuff.

this study goes fairly in-depth to outline its findings, which (probably uncontroversially) indicate a firm but complex link between low expressions of cognitive empathy (engaging with the internal life of others, not the colloquial useage), actions of moral disengagement (including the heavy use of euphemisms and distortion to downplay consequences, displacing and diffusing responsibility, and blame/dehumanization of the victim), and overall homophobia.

so, separate to but correlated with what i'd call 'irony poisoning'.

like, we see indicators of this all the time. strong expressions of phobia rarely come from well-adjusted people.

as an autistic person, I have a lot of issues with the way people talk about 'empathy', but the literature is very clear on defining cognitive empathy as a learned skill, not some wishy-washy 'innate ability only morally good people have'.

learning to try and engage with the experiences and inner lives of Other Groups and People is a really important developmental skill. so is moral engagement, or Thinking Honestly About How People Are Affected By Your Actions.

humans are generally wired to do those things, and it can take a lot of deliberate cognitive work to make yourself (and your audience) comfortable with Not Doing Those Things:

Within the realms across Atheria, Magic often has a price to pay whether it has good or bad intentions depending on the user's Will. Usually these Corruptions and Curses appear upon the person's body.

Examples of Magic that leads to physical altercations to the body are as follows.

-Shadow -Soul -Corruption -Blood -Nature -Ice -Fire -Hex [negative]

However asides from Physical Corruptions and Curses there is also Mental and Emotional. These are much harder to spot considering these are often blown off as some sort of mental and emotional struggle.

Examples of Magic used to create mental and emotional altercations to the mind is as follows

-Blood -Corruption -Illusion -Chaos -Hex [negative]

*Please note that these are but mere examples and that magic of all kinds can have varying effects on the mind and body*.

These curses and corruption can happen in one or two ways.

I. Hexes:

Hexes [negative type] are often the result of most curses that can inflict a person. These usually happen when a person seeks out to place a curse on whoever their intended target is, these can be physical or mental. Although these do have a limit and its own price to pay. The limit is usually dependent on the limitations of the curse associated with whatever magic class they are taking power from. The price for the person to pay is similar to the concept of "Karma". The bigger the curse the bigger the price the person would have to pay back.

So because of this a person has to be extremely careful when casting a curse upon something or someone! Sometimes curses can go wrong and not work at all if the ritual/spell isn't performed right. In other cases if it doesn't work right it'll end up cursing the person trying to cast the curse instead.

Another thing to note about these curses is that if a curse isn't lifted right away they are often permanent and can last for generations. By this, the curse will carry onto the offspring of the parent that is cursed. there is a 50/50 chance that if one parent is cursed their child will inherit the same curse as the parent. Unless the parent has found a way for the curse to be lifted beforehand, Then it won't happen.

This is one of the reasons why Negative type Hexes are considered to be part of the forbidden arts group due to it having generational effects on the cursed victims family.

II. Overabundance in Magic Useage:

Sometimes these corruptions and curses happen when someone heavily relies on the magic they are using. These are often more physical in terms of after effects rather than mental however there have been some recorded cases of mental and emotional altercations.

There have been some recorded cases on the effects the body takes depending on the magical class.

Shadow: Overuse of Umbrakinesis on the body often results in a person's limbs becoming shadow-like. The more one uses Umbrakinesis when overusing, the more it spreads around the body. These usually affect the hands, arms and legs of the user, however there have been reports of the sclera darkening as well. These changes become permanent if a large portion of the limb has become nothing but pure Shadow Essence.

Soul: Overuse of Soul magic usually results in either the souls of the user showing up on some part of their body, usually the eyes. The other effects that can happen is where parts of the body become skeletal like, Much like the reapers and the other effect is there parts of the body have an spectral appearance. These changes vary on what kind of Soul magic type is being used. These changes become permanent if a large portion of the body or soul has been fused with Soul Essence.

Corruption: Overuse of Corrokinesis will drive the user into total lunacy. They are completely detached from themselves as well as their own reality. This has very little physical effects on the body as it's more of a mental based one. However the physical effects are usually body twitchiness, eyes that have a slight permanent glow and color change, pallor, sharp nails and teeth that replace the old ones and finally darkening of the person's blood. It is visible on the body.

Blood: Overuse of Hemomancy tends to weaken the users body due to amount of blood loss as well as a need to need more blood. The mental effects usually drive the person to find more blood to use for the said magic, even if it means they get it through umoral ways. Even if the user already made a pact to continue using the magic they'll always want and crave for more. The physical effects are very visible as the person will usually be seen with tons of scars on the body and go through symptoms someone diagnosed with Anemia would have. Their skin tends to become thinner as well as their blood so they'll bleed a lot more easily compared to the average being.

Nature: Overuse of Ecomancy is pretty straightforward, the user will experience plant growths on their body or their limbs will be made of plant like materials. Sometimes these plants will replace parts of the body. One example of this is their eyes being replaced with floral based growths that caused permanent blindness. Sometimes a person will get horn-like growths made out of tree limbs on the top of their head. These changes are often permanent as these are spread throughout large portions of the body and have been fused with Nature Essence.

Ice: Overuse of Cryomancy is also straightforward. The user's body temperature will drop to unnatural levels yet they'll still function despite all odds. They'll always be cold on the inside and out. Their hair will often experience discoloration or intense poliosis, making it lighter almost near white in appearance, their skin will also experience pallor and the lips will have a slight blue tint to it. Frost-like patches can appear on the skin on various parts of the body or in some cases can be replaced by ice like appendages. These changes become permanent when the body fuses with the Ice Essence.

Fire: Overuse of Pyromancy is basically the opposite of Cryomancy, The user's body temperature will rise to unnatural levels but yet still be able to function. They'll always be hot on the inside and out. However their skin often has burns that tend to cover varying parts of the body. Their hair is singed and replaced with the said element, basically fire magic itself. They lose their pupils and their eyes have a completely white appearance. They are still able to see oddly enough, however they will develop thermal vision. These changes become permanent when the body fuses with the Fire Essence.

As mentioned prior, These are but mere examples of what Magical Corruptions can look like. There are plenty of different effects of overusage in magic depending on the magical essence. oh hey btw if you see someone use they/them for someone who doesn't go by they/them don't yell at them immediately. like ofc theres the scenario where they don't know the pronouns of said person, but also. surprise surprise. if you have memory issues one of the things that may just never stick to your head is pronouns. i kinda have to use they/them for everyone unless i have at least one pronoun memorized because pronouns are just a thing that Does. getting really fucking sick and tired of the ONE SINGLE laundrybasket we have here that we can use for clean clothes i fucking missing. again. cus some fucker took it and either just didnt put it back cus theyre fucking lazy, or they still havent put their clothes away and its in their room, or theyre using it to stash their shit in it for some fucking reason. because the only laundrybasket we have is the perfect place to dump your bag thats been on the floor along with other shit that doesnt belong in a basket thats supposed to be clean and also not in the fucking livingroom

like i wish it wasnt a big deal but when things arent in the places theyre supposed to be in cus someone feels like "everyone can use this thing that has a commonly known specific useage for its purpose" means "this is public property therefore i can take it and use it for whatever i want whenever i want, if its presented as a problem i simply will not connect the dots and i will continue to use this for the wrong purpose at teh detriment to other people who want to use it for its actual purpose" and it keeps fucking. happening.

These curses and corruption can happen in one or two ways.

Unless the parent has found a way for the curse to be lifted beforehand, Then it won't happen.

Sometimes a person will get horn-like growths made out of tree limbs on the top of their head. These changes are often permanent as these are spread throughout large portions of the body and have been fused with Nature Essence.

Ice: Overuse of Cryomancy is also straightforward. The user's body temperature will drop to unnatural levels yet they'll still function despite all odds. They'll always be cold on the inside and out. Their hair will often experience discoloration or intense poliosis, making it lighter almost near white in appearance, their skin will also experience pallor and the lips will have a slight blue tint to it. Frost-like patches can appear on the skin on various parts of the body or in some cases can be replaced by ice like appendages. These changes become permanent when the body fuses with the Ice Essence.

Fire: Overuse of Pyromancy is basically the opposite of Cryomancy, The user's body temperature will rise to unnatural levels but yet still be able to function. They'll always be hot on the inside and out. However their skin often has burns that tend to cover varying parts of the body. Their hair is singed and replaced with the said element, basically fire magic itself. They lose their pupils and their eyes have a completely white appearance. They are still able to see oddly enough, however they will develop thermal vision. These changes become permanent when the body fuses with the Fire Essence.

Oh my gosh thank you!!!!! I'm having a bit of a writer's block when it comes to the actual story, so I've been kinda messing around and doing research about different things. Idk if it's obvious yet, but I'm a huge nerd. I especially love science and sci-fi(duh) as well as biology! I actually wanted to be a doctor with some kind of focus on congenital disorders when I was a kid. Weird kid, I know. Anyway, I love thinking about lore and nerdy shit, so I'm gonna take this opportunity to do just that! Beware under the cut is a very long essay about space, civilizations, rambles, and math. Lots of math.

So, I have no idea where I want to start, but I know what I want to talk about so I'm gonna pick something and roll with it. First thing's first, the Kardashev scale.

Because this isn't an English class and I don't have to re-word shit, I'm gonna copy and paste from wikipedia for this one: "The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use. The measure was proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964." Cool? Cool.

So yeah, basically it's an easy way to say how advanced a civilization is, and it's broken up into three types.

A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization—can use and store all of the energy available on its planet.

A Type II civilization, also called a stellar civilization—can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system.

A Type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization—can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy.

Just to give you a grasp of what that means relative to us, humans are estimated to be a type 0.73 civilization. We're expected to get to type 1 in a few hundred years or so. Here's where math comes in. Note: I hate, and am not good at math. So, take all of this with a grain of salt.

So, a Type 1 civ. is usually defined as one that can harness all the energy that falls on a planet from its parent star (for Earth–Sun system, this value is close to 1.74×10^17 watts), which is about four orders of magnitude higher than the amount presently attained on Earth, with energy consumption at ≈2×10^13 watts.

Before I go any further, I want to ramble a bit about their star

For my own personal headcanon that the Irken planet is slightly dimmer than earth, I'm gonna make the Irken star a K0 type star. For reference, the sun is a G2V star, meaning it's a yellow dwarf. A K0 star is kind of inbetween red dwarfs and yellow dwarfs. Quick explanation on the letter-number thing, (as best as I understand it, disclaimer I am not an expert) The letter is the classification of a star based on heat and luminosity, going O, B, A, F, G, K, M, L. O being the brightest and hottest (and largest typically) and L being the opposite. The number is size. A higer positive number means a smaller star. A G2 yellow dwarf is smaller than a G-3 yellow dwarf.

Make sense? God I hope so. Anyway, I picked a K0 star for a couple reasons.

They live longer. Our sun has a lifespan of about 10 billion years, but a K type star has a lifespan of 18-34 billion years. Because of this some scientists think they're a prime place to look for life because of their long stability.

They emit less ultraviolet radiation, which can damage DNA, making the developement of life less likely to be hindered by this star

They're 3-4 times more common that G type stars, so it's literally more likely that the irken sun is a K type anyway

They're dimmer and cooler (but not by much) than G type, which fits into my own personal HC about a dimmer sun.

ANYWAY now to get back into the first topic, the Kardashev scale. The irken sun has a temperature of 5,240° Kelvin (8,900° F/4970° C), a radius of .85 (367,445 m/591,345km), a mass of .78 (3.42^30lbs/1.551^30kg), and a luminosity of .40 or 1.531^26 watts.

Compare all this to our sun (Temp of 5,780°K, radius 1, mass 1, and luminosity of 1, being 3.827^26 watts), basically the Irken sun is smaller and less powerful.

Back to the Kardashev scale. Modern day earth is .73, right? I imagine that Irkens are somewhere in the high 1's, like 1.7. The reason I'm not placing them in two is because I don't headcanon that they've built a dyson sphere or a matrioshka brain.

For those who don't know, a Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure that completely encompasses a star and captures a large percentage of its power output. These bad boys are imagined to look kindof like this

Cool as hell right? Also not something I think Irkens would be focused on. they're more about outward and conquering expansion rather than efficiant energy consumption and useage.

With that in mind, I'm going to say on the civilization range Kardashev scale Irkens are 2.000279. The reason for that tiny decimal amount is because a level 2 civ is one that has full control over their solar system, and a level 3 is one that has full control over their galaxy.

Galaxies are huge. Really huge. The Milky Way galaxy (In W&C Irkens are in the Milky Way as well) is on the smaller side, but it still has 100 billion stars, and 100-400 billion planets. Of those planets, an estimated 300 million to 50 billion may contain life, but most people stick it down at the low end of 300 million. So I'm going to use that number as well.

To figure out where they are on the scale, I have to figure out how large the Irken Empire actually is, so I looked at some other fictional empires.

In Star Wars, there are 1.5 million planets under the galactic empire, and an additional 60 million colonies (which can be as small as a space station or something idk)

But in Star Trek, there are only 150 planets in the federation.

In Dune, it's the whole Universe.

So there's a lot of variation here. Personally, I think under a thousand planets is a good number for a rapidly growing Empire that has unrealistic visions of grandeur, so I placed the amount of planets under their control to be 837 and called it a day.

Thus, 2.000279 on the scale.

Now with that number I'm gonna assign Irk a year. Physicist Michio Kaku suggested that it will take a few thousand years for humans to reach type two status, so I'm going to use that as a starting point to work on.

One might tack on a few thousand years to 2021 and call it a day, but I can't do that because the Gregorian calendar is religion based, and irkens probably don't have Jesus so it would be weird to base make a year for them based off of the Gregorian calendar. So instead I'm going to use the Holocene calendar. If you haven't heard of it, you're missing out! It's a very cool calendar that respresents and encompasses all of human history, and it's a very simple change: It adds 10,000 years to the current calendar, so for example, it is the year 12,021 on the holocene calendar. Cool right? The reason for this 10,000 year addition is 12,000 years ago is right around the time humans actually started settiling and building structures and beginning to farm. Thus, the birth of human civilization.

So I'm gonna be unrealistic and apply that 12,000 year first farm -> cell phone period to Irkens, and then tack on... idk let's say 2700 years. Cool beans, now we have a 15,700 year old Irken calendar. Except, 15,700 human years isn't equal to 15,700 Irken years. They're different planets, with different rotations, so they have different years. I have a previous post where I mention some basic statistics about the planet, go check it out! But for here, know that an irken year is 1.3 times longer than an earth year, so their calendar is actually going to be in the year 20,410 in the same amount of time. Let's say it's 20,417 just for funsies.

Hip hip hooray, Irk has a calendar! A year! Woohoo!

What are your personal headcanons on ghost cores?

ok I'm currently still mostly in the absorbing information phase, im consuming others' headcanons and sorting through what works best for me >:3 thats all to say that this is liable to change at any point, but here's what Im liking right now!

Function:

the purpose of a ghost core is to process common ectoplasm into ectoplasm coded for them

a ghost's ectosignature is a projection of their sort of individual code which is kind of like DNA (in fact it's compatible with human DNA, which is part of how hybrids work but thats a discussion for another day)

and a core absorbs ambient ectoplasm and imprints the ghost's energy pattern into it, thus making it their specific coded ectoplasm

this coding allows the ectoplasm to be shifted into the ghost's elemental state (if they have one) with a small change to its code, which is an instinctual energy change for a ghost

The core is powered by the emotional energy which comprises the "essence" of the ghost, the emotional influence from their life that allowed them to persist in the first place

let's use an example with Danny: ambient ectoplasm, both common or shed from other ghosts, is absorbed by his core. inside of it, his core lets off minute pulses of emotional energy. this leaves the processed ectoplasm. its energetic "code" is complex but let's say that its like 1011010. being his bonded ectoplasm, danny can now manipulate it in many ways, such as converting it into a pure energy form and concentrating it in his hands, readying it as an ectoblast. he can, once he's actively conscious of it, exert a tiny emotional signal which changes it from 1011010 (his signature base energy state) into 1011011. the last byte (god i really did just decide to do binary huh) representing whether it's ice-elemental. by making the change, it's now the ice version of his energy and can be used as an ice blast. the nature of his ectosignature code allows the "ice byte" to be changed freely, while a ghost with a different elemental state would not have that access to that "byte". example over :)

for hybrids, as they're still alive, their emotional impact and "soul" changes as they learn and grow. this means their ectosignatures change subtly over time, unlike full ghosts. this also means that their cores change slightly

the elemental shifting ability of coded ectoplasm means that a ghost's elemental type can be determined from their ectosignature

a ghost is made up of their coded ectoplasm, which automatically forms the right entity. this means they don't strictly need their core to survive, as long as they have enough of their own stable ectoplasm to hold form. however, they won't last long without it, since they will quickly shed off their own ectoplasm and it won't be replenished. it's kind of like a heart in that sense except every entity shares blood

Anatomy:

the core is a small sphere made of a spongy mesh of "solidified" emotional energy

it usually exists in a semi-tangible state which allows it to be contacted by phaseproof material or anything matching its tangibility state. i suppose this is just the same as normally intangible substances but even in this state it's a lot more "tangible" than emotional energy usually is

the specific emotional makeup of the ghost is reflected in the webbing patterns inside the core, though the pattern is repeated many times, so the ghost's personality and essence is based on the pattern that occurs most often. this prevents minor core damage from damaging the ghost's sense of self

however this does mean that major damage, from strained core useage, foreign energy influx, impact from something that can contact it, or something else to that effect can change the ghost's personality and powers, or more likely destabilize them

the core naturally resides in the center of the chest (or a given ghost's equivalent) but can be deliberately moved

Elements / formation:

the Dead and ghosts formed from human awareness of concepts (you know like vortex etc) have cores since they are made up of living emotions

ghosts born of other ghosts can have small cores made of parts of their parents' cores. this does mean that their parents have to lose a small part of their cores, since full ghosts can't create more living emotion to reform parts of core. anyway, young ghosts of this variety can take in living emotions they encounter to build up their own cores. this means it's good for them to spend time in the mortal realm but it also means their personality is heavily influenced by the emotions and personalities of the humans they grew up around. a ghost born of other ghosts will not mature until it has collected enough living emotion to form a full core

ghosts like blobs or whisps, which are conglomerations of ambient ectoplasm, have no core, signature energy, or hard-coded personality. they can express dead emotions and, depending on the type, feed on living emotions, and if they persist long enough form personalities.

a ghost's elemental type is determined mostly by their personality (including emotional attachments during life if theyre Dead or associations if theyre conceptual) rather than cause of death

since it's based off emotional attachments and personality values, it frequently matches up with the ghost's Obsession, which is based off emotions and thoughts during death (or the root of human belief in their concept if theyre conceptual). this however is correlation rather than causation, and odd causes of death or emotional connections can leave the elemental state and obsession having nothing to do with one another

there are other influences for elemental type such as random chance and probably other things i just dont feel like thinking up rn ive been writing this for an hour kjfhkrjfhjd

it's possible ot have a "neutral" elemental type, which just means the ghost cannot change their ectoplasm into an elementally typed form, it will just stay "base" type
