My interpretation of this art (it's from one of the Daydream Hour issues!) is that Chilchuck took the time to prepare the chest, wear the mimic costume, get inside and give his daughters a fun little jumpscare when they opened it, but they were either not impressed, didn't get it, or just wanted the candy, so he just went.
