Went skimming thru late trimax For Reasons, got caught up reading the Legato fight, realized things about the fight that I never had before & went WOW, I kind of want to write an analysis post right now!

Felt the same kind of insanity grip me, however momentarily, that fueled all my analysis posts however many months ago. Too tired to actually word things coherently right now, but...

I May or may not have a full(ish?) analysis of the Legato & Vash fight a la style of This post analyzing the Trigun: Multiple Bullets fight that got unexpectedly kind of popular. People seemed to really appreciate that one, & I even had some ppl saying it could be cool if I did that for others?

The research that went into the pages of Latin in his apartment, the novelty of the words he likely spoke, tying himself to the Vast rather than having the Vast directly claim him...? Mathematics? Always a good shout. With the money he was dropping on possibly-Leitners & research material for that ritual to seal the agent of the Spiral, he had to find a long-term plan if the book hunt was to continue. And fractals come from geometry, do they not? (also he bought a book by Gottfried Leibniz, so i figure this is a strong option)

Arahabaki!chuuya fic idea pls stay with me for a second:

i've been reading fics where Arahabaki awakens by some means and just,,, wrecks havoc and that's GOOD don't get me wrong, but hear me out 

what if mans just awakens and is like hold on !! im not supposed to be here right now what the fuck is happening ?? so it (they? he??) wanders around the city, searching for the person/entity with the ‘cold gift’ and something something someone from the ada finds him, probably atsushi and kyouka, and ‘chuuya’ is all like “please bring me to the nullifier?” but his voice doubles over itself in some places and it echoes a bit despite them being in the middle of the street, and he's floating a bit off the ground for no good reason ( Arahabaki can't walk bc its not used to it, me thinks). 

they share a look and go “....sure?? are you alright though?” and ‘chuuya‘ just stares at them for a bit, and it's so unnerving because there's something so deeply wrong in his stare. atsushi’s tiger is pacing in his head, all ruffled up. kyouka has been gripping her knife since the start of this conversation. 

but after a while ‘chuuya‘ nods and, after some hesitation, they bring him back to the office where dazai takes one (1) look at the creature standing on the ADA’s doorstep, asks “is he dead?” and when ‘chuuya’ tilts his head in confusion, dazai promptly puts a bullet into its head.

‘chuuya‘ just blinks at him, pulls the bullet out of his head,  gives it back to dazai and asks if he can “touch us, it is not our time to be awake. bring us back to darkness.“. dazai is so tired already. its 3 in the afternoon. he wants to go home.

then more shenanigans occur

retcons. they're a writing tool. they're not fundamentally a bad tool. though I greet them more often with an "ugh, retcon" than a "nice, retcon"-

and that's often because they're overwrites. sometimes carelessly so, the 'didn't pay enough attention to what came before'/'guess I changed it' route. And sometimes retcons are the 'that's not the story I want to tell now or I can do better than that' route.

Andor is doing the second type of retcon, and interestingly so, because there wasn't a whole lot there to retcon *and yet* they are managing to do that.

When Rogue One came out, Disney dropped a bunch of expanded universe material. The NEW expanded universe, because they'd already ditched the old one, to avoid conflicts; this new one could be consistent (ha, ha, ha).

In those 2016 detail books we got the facts on Cassian Andor's backstory: from the planet Fest (clearly carefully chosen for its old EU history), father killed during a protest against militarization on Imperial Academy planet Carida (another world with EU history), involved with a Separatist cell from age 6 on...

Anddd anyone who'd read those extended materials knew Andor the show was ditching that backstory within seconds of him dropping the name 'Kenari' in context that was immediately clear it was his home planet. I appreciated at least getting a nod to the backstory we had since 2016 with dropping that his 'cover story' planet was Fest. They definitely were aware and chose not to go that route. And that's OK! they have a story they want to tell, they're digging into some interesting themes and meanings and...

Well. Either way it's a retcon. A minor one that 97% of the audience will never notice or care about. And yes they're still keeping to the spirit of that key line in Rogue One-

"I've been in this fight since I was six years old"

- clearly the mining disaster on Kenari presumably happened when Cassian was six years old. So his childhood was ruined by the Empire then and he's been resisting them ever since, it's not that it renders it untrue it's just-

it's just that he's pulling a moral high ground with that line over Jyn whose life was also ruined by the Empire at eight years old and was raised as a child soldier by Saw Gerrera, a character whose very name is designed to evoke guerilla warfare...?

I mean a Cassian who's already been in prison and is scrapping by and sticking it to the Imperials all he can, drawing those character parallels between them even closer then are we, but the whole crux of that (excellently written & filmed I'm still not over it) argument hinges on Cassian's relationship with/committment to the Rebellion above all else. The show's retcon has just... shortened that relationship. By quite quite a bit.

And there is now some unintentional irony, from this retcon, if Jyn was actually (via Saw's cell) part of the Rebellion longer than Cassian.

...it's fine, it's fine, tbh watch them retcon Jyn's backstory soon enough, it's a very minor retcon and maybe future episodes will reveal Cassian has been doing more actual rebelling than it seems and... nonetheless. Ugh retcon.

I have been reading lots of local papers from the late 1930s as fic research. By far the weirdest thing I have discovered is that there was a journalist living in my city in 1938 who had a huge pash on *Peter the Great*. Every week there was a serialised item called PETER THE GREAT AND HIS CIRCLE, the thesis of which can be summed up as “Peter the Great never did anything wrong in his whole human life (and looked so terribly handsome while in the process of doing nothing wrong)”. Just absolutely astonishing stuff.
