I do not know how to put comments on Dreamwidth, but I really enjoyed reading your snippets. I especially loved Dick being so excited about becoming a hawk! He would *love* that. One of my favourite things about him is a character is that he’s actually very enthusiastic about everything, just in a scientific and logical kind of way. Also, Regency Dick & Titty are both great fun. I love the characterisation of Dick as not exactly having bad manners, but just not *knowing* about manners. This feels very in character for him. And Witch!Titty and Alchemist!Dick, wanting to understand how witch magic works! What a joy.

Now that you say it, I agree about the importance of the setting and the boats as characters in themselves - that makes loads of sense as a reason for the lack of AUs. The only AUs that I’ve ever toyed with writing for this universe are both in settings with a version of ships - an AU for John and Nancy set in the Temeraire universe, because Nancy Blackett, Dragon Aviatrix, has never left my mind since I read those books; and a spacefaring AU with Dick as an embedded scientist on an exploration ship and Titty as a pilot on a ship they encounter. I think that for John, Nancy, Titty, and the Death and Glories, how they feel about boats and sailing is such an integral part of their characters that it’s difficult to transport them to a world where that’s not a factor at all. Some of those others feel easier to move - Roger, Dot, Susan and Peggy are characters it’s easier to picture in other settings, I think.

I have a question for the “Would you ever write” ask game! I’m always interested by which fandoms have loads of AUs and people rarely write canon-compliant fic, and ones where almost everything is set in or around canon. Swallows and Amazons is definitely one of the latter - I think almost all the stories I’ve read in the fandom are canon-compliant or adjacent. So would you ever write a Swallows and Amazons AU of any kind?

Oooh, that's a good question! Technically, I have written some AU snippets as a meme on dreamwidth some years ago, but none of them developed into full-fledged fics or even ficlets... I wonder if it's because the setting feels so integral to the stories? The ships, the Lake, they're practically characters, which may be making it hard to AU it?

Having an absolutely lovely time drawing tables and making charts and generally treating the writing of this fic as though I’m planning the next Mars mission. Why did no-one ever tell me how much sorting and organising you get to do when writing a mystery? I would have tried it years ago!
