Eddie stands at the bar, sipping at the whisky in his glass, eyes flickering over the crush of bodies and dark mahogany. He's at a premier party at TIFF, doesn't remember what movie it's for, is supposed to "mingle" according to his agent. And sure, he's charismatic, got a big personality and a loud mouth, but he's not good at networking; resents having to perform when he's not playing a role. Resents it more that he's an Oscar nominated actor, that his work doesn't stand for itself.
And then there's the Steve Harrington of it all. Heartthrob. America's Sweetheart. The boy next door. He's across the room, deep in conversation, but his eyes--they keep finding Eddie, scanning him with unmistakable heat.
They starred in a movie called Dying on the Pass. Played life-long best friends who became elite chefs and opened a restaurant together. The movie follows the dissolution of their friendship as the stresses of pursuing a Michelin Star drive them apart. It was a critical and commercial hit, cue awards noms, and offers pouring in, and--
Steve Harrington is his bed.
They promised, when filming wrapped. They swore it was the last time. They promised--
They basically shared a hotel room during awards season, woke up tangled together every morning.
They spent a torrid weekend in Atlanta after Steve wrapped on a Netflix action movie.
Six months after, they had a quick, furious fuck in the bathroom at a club in London.
Dangerous, stupid, but no one caught them. And here Steve is in Toronto, surrounded by press, staring at Eddie like he wants to eat him.
Eddie tries to ignore it. But every time their eyes meet, warmth pools low in his abdomen, and he wants.
They meet up eventually, pose for a couple of pictures, Eddie trying to ignore the way his skin tingles everywhere that Steve touches. Steve slings an arm around his waist, lets it linger.
After, Eddie goes out for a smoke, the patio blissfully deserted. He's half way through his cigarette when Steve steps out the sliding door, wrapping his hands in Eddie's hair, pulling him into a kiss. The cigarette drops as he grips onto the other man, a whimper slipping from his lips.
He should stop this, they're outside, anyone could see, and Steve isn't out--isn't--he's straight to the entire world, the straightest man alive. And Eddie, he's open about his preferences, identifies as queer, though lately he's been more interested in men--in one man, specifically-- and Steve isn't out, isn't ready to be and--
"Come back to my room?" Steve asks. Their mouths are still pressed together.
"Uh-huh," Eddie answers.
Steve whispers his room number before disappearing back inside. They're in the same hotel, on the same floor, like the universe wants them to keep hooking up. But Steve is being reckless.
Eddie goes to Steve that night with every intention of telling him they need to stop, to slow down, that they're going to get caught and he knows Steve isn't ready, but he doesn't. He doesn't that night and he doesn't two months later when they bump into each other in Venice, or four months after that in New York, or--or --or
It's dangerous, impulsive, too many close calls for them to keep it up and then--and then he's at a house party in the hills, an industry thing, the host is a wannabe big shot producer trying to get in good with the Hollywood elite. Steve is out of town. In Europe filming or maybe Australia for some event or--
Striding through the party, eyes locked on Eddie, and they're in a hallway, in a hallway where anyone could see them, but Steve is kissing him. They're kissing and it's rough and possessive and it stings.
Steve pushes him through double-doors, to the room at their backs, and Eddie wants to protest, to remind him they don't know if it's empty. But Steve is tugging the tie out of Eddie's hair, digging this hands into the now loose curls, and Eddie whines, lets himself be lead.
He's pushed against a table, and in the weak light from the windows, he realizes they're in the dining room. Steve grinds against him, muttering, "missed you so much, baby. God, it's been too long. Need you so bad."
Eddie moans, shifting to press more against Steve. "Missed you too, sweetheart, fuck."
They're kissing and Eddie's high on it, on Steve, can't get enough.
There's a loud burst of laughter outside the door, and reality smashes back into focus.
"Stop," he whispers to Steve.
Steve does in an instant, stepping back. Even in the darkness, Eddie sees the confusion and hurt mingling in the squint of his eyes, his light frown.
"Steve we--this is dangerous. There are people everywhere. Anyone could come in. There's a TMZ guy here, and we--need to be careful."
"Fuck," Steve breathes. "Eddie I--fuck." He presses his hand over his mouth, eyes squeezed shut. "I can't get enough of you, man. Whenever I see you I just--I don't think--I see you and I want you so bad it hurts. Once every few months isn't enough. Hookups aren't enough. And I know that's not what we agreed to, and--"
"Steve," Eddie gently cuts him off. "I'm crazy about you. It hasn't been hookups for me for--" ever, it had never been, but he shakes his head instead of saying that. "But we've been reckless, sweetheart, and I don't want to see you hurt."
"It's not fair to you, though, right? Hiding and sneaking around with me."
"You need time, Steve. You deserve to come out on your terms, when you're ready. And if that means we're not public for a while, then we're not."
"What if I'm never ready?" He whispers. It breaks Eddie's heart, but it's a fair question for a man who got famous as an angelic child star in a series of fantasy-adventure movies before playing a quarterback with a heart-of-gold on the CW for seven seasons. He's always kept up a squeaky clean image, never in trouble, name rarely in the tabloids.
"Then we'll deal with it together."
"Okay," Steve whispers. A smile spreads slow across his face. "I'd like that."
--
Steve Harrington and Eddie Munson are seen around town together often. Getting lunch, at parties, shopping. In an interview Steve says that Eddie's his best friend, they do everything together. There's speculation online, of course, but it's pretty quiet. So, they go to premiers and award shows and events together.
A year goes by and it's easy, light, fun. They're in love.
Eddie's messing around on his guitar, not with any intent just for the joy of it. He's on the loveseat in the office of their apartment--their apartment. Steve is in the kitchen, he thinks, or puttering in the garden.
They haven't talked about Steve coming out; haven't needed to.
"Hey," Steve says from the doorway. Eddie jumps.
"Hey yourself."
"It's Bi Visibility day."
"Is it now?" He's not sure where this is going
"I want to come out."
He puts the guitar down. "You sure?"
Steve nods. He doesn't seem nervous, just calm and steady.
"How do you want to do it?"
He crosses the room, climbing onto Eddie's lap, making Eddie laugh. "Works for me." Eddie gives Steve's ass a playful squeeze.
They start kissing then, Steve snapping pics on his phone randomly as they make out.
Steve won't let Eddie peak as he crafts his Insta post, not until it's done and live for his 15 million followers.
The picture he picked, it's a soft kiss, mouths open but lips only just brushing, noses pressed together in a sweet little bump. But the thing about, the thing that makes Eddie's stomach swoop, is the way they're both smiling, the way it's obvious just how in love they are.
Steve's captioned it with the words "Witness Me" and the bi flag.
He pulls his boy into another kiss, says, "Hey,"
"Hmm?" Steve doesn't pull away.
"Wanna go be visibly bisexual with me in the bedroom?"
Steve hops off his lap, strides across the room, turning to flash Eddie a devious smile. "Thought you'd never ask."

I think it will be telling re: if fans can expect Buddie canon at some point in the shows future if Tim cements those Buckley-Diaz family/Buddie moments from seasons prior or if he uses this clean slate with a new audience to put the nail in the proverbial coffin and have them remain BFFs. He could use this clean slate to re-address all those Buddie fandom moments we love as something different or highlight them as super important to the future arc of these two characters specifically so pay attention ABC audience. Personally, I don’t think Buddie will go canon on ABC/Disney due to the target demo of this first responder show but this move could be a new opportunity to go balls to the wall and shake shit up. The foundation of romance is already there in the background.
These thoughts line up perfectly with mine as we get closer to season seven, nonnie. Do I *expect* Buddie to be canon? No. But if Disney is actually open to the possibility - if Tim can pitch the story line in a way that makes Disney believe it'll benefit the show in the long run - the path has to be laid out from the jump. The ABC audience will know about Buck's ex gfs, and Marisol and Shannon for Eddie, but the "jokes" about Buck's sexuality? Don't need to be jokes anymore. Eddie didn't say anything about being attracted to men after breaking up with Ana or while dating in season six? Being in a relationship (assuming Marisol is back) is a way to ease everyone into accepting that he's bi, and then if/when the Marisol chapter is closed (for reasons other than his sexuality, probably*), the focus could shift to finding love with someone else, someone who has been in his life through all the failed relationships. (And the audience would hopefully be receptive because they aren't being repeatedly hit over the head with how straight Buck and Eddie are in these first ten episodes. Single Buck would help a lot, I think.) *I know the Eddie girlies really wanted a story line where Eddie finally confessed/confronted the truth in a tortured way [insert headcanons about the Diaz parents being homophobic], but since we've seen things from one show rewritten to fit the other (Buddie and Tarlos and the will, Grace and May dealing with a new dispatcher are the first two that come to mind), I think the approach might be similar to what Tim did with Nancy - admitting something nobody really knew, there's visible surprise (maybe some questions) and it's just...a thing in the back of everyone's mind that might get addressed again one day for the purpose of illustrating his feelings towards another man.

I promise I’ll stop nattering about Infinite Jes soon, but I have a question about uh....broader issues, I guess, that the book is bringing into focus.
I had a suggestion on Fete that while it was fine to put it up for review on AO3 pre-pub, I could also have put it in Googledocs, locked editing, and invited comments. That way people could comment immediately when they saw something and also see if others had commented on it, and I could edit in real time in a single document instead of flipping back and forth from AO3 to GoogleDocs where the book lived anyway. And while AO3 has said they’re ok with it when I’ve asked, I’ve never felt great about using them for non-fanfic purposes.
I like it in theory but I wonder if it would be a clusterfuck in action or if it would lead to like, fights in comments, or some rando coming in to spam. Also I wonder if it would be less fun for people to get a full document at once instead of chapters day-by-day, and if I did add chapters into the doc every day, if there’s a good way to link to the chapter heading from Tumblr.
Would folks be interested in testing out “Googledoc commenting” with Infinite Jes? It’s the same length as Fete For A King, roughly 50K words, which is on the short side for novels, so it might be a good test case.
Post tax: here’s a clip from Infinite Jes, featuring Jes, their son Noah, and their business partner Lachlan:
"You'd be surprised what politicians can get away with, especially when they're pretty. But you may be right. I suppose we'll find out," Jes said. Their phone buzzed and they checked it. "Ah. Lachlan wants to know if the coast is clear and he can come back in to scream with us about what just happened. Would you go get him? I need a minute of silence to rethink all my life choices."
"Yeah, I got it," Noah said, getting to his feet and heading for the door. A minute later, Lachlan could be heard making a series of high-pitched enthusiastic screams, growing ever closer. Jes got up and dusted themself down.
"Oh my shit that was the ex-king," Lachlan cackled, throwing himself through the door, down the hall, and into their office. Jes followed more calmly. Noah, wisely, went back to his work in the waiting room. "He is hot in person. That steel grey hair? And legs for days. And that voice. Bet he can purr like a cat. What did he want?"
"Podcast advice," Jes said.
"He could read the phone book and I bet we could sell it. Did you give him your number?"
"I think he took a card," Jes answered, frowning.
"Did you give him my number?"
"Lachlan, I love you, and you are a beautiful person inside and out, but the former king of the country who was married to the same woman for his entire reign and lost her tragically less than a decade ago is never going to sleep with you."
"He might be bi. Anyway, the royals demonstrably have no taste in men, his son is dating Eddie Rambler."
"Even if he is bi, he doesn't seem like the type for casual sex."
"I'd marry him if it was required, I'm not doing anything more interesting," Lachlan said, putting his feet up on the desk.
"Your husband and infant child might take issue."
"They'll recover. By the way, did you see him check you?"
"I saw him visibly trying to figure out what pronouns to use. Thankfully the business card was a hint. Hopefully he picked up on it."
"I think he liked your hair. Good thing you wore the kilt today."
"I'm sure he's seen nicer knees. Did you want something?"
"Other than another three days minimum spent drooling over king Michaelis? Not particularly. Let's go have early lunch with cocktails."

here's the thing...
just because buck and taylor are dating doesn't mean bucktaylor is endgame, especially when you consider buck's dating history.
in the pilot we see that buck tends to put himself out there and has a number of hookups, but in the very first one he tries to take that further by asking her out and gets shut down. so from the start he isn't just looking for sex, he just keeps ending up in bed with people who are. enter abby
right off the bat, abby is a break from the norm. she doesnt even want to meet him in person at first. they form a connection before they ever hook up (and one could argue phone sex is even a little more intimate in some ways because there's an added layer of vulnerability to it). she shows buck how far emotional investment can elevate a relationship. unfortunately, she can't invest nearly as much as buck can, and ends up leaving him high and dry when he's ready to take the next step with her.
lesson learned: he needs someone he can keep pace with. enter taylor (phase i)
at first taylor seems like a good, safe bet, but buck is once more seeking connection ("call me?") and taylor's career is taking off - which is just so sexy of her, i might add - and their false start leads them nowhere. but it does have the benefit of helping him put abby out of his mind. enter ali
i dont care what anyone says, ali and buck were cute together. the scene where they're touring the loft? adorable. ali helps buck move forward from abby in multiple ways, including getting him out of that goddamn apartment and into his own place. they operated well together, shared equal footing, had great chemisty; everything buck had with abby, but with someone in the same phase of their life.
by the end of season 3 we know that while buck may have moved forward from abby, he hasn't fully moved on. closure is a powerful, powerful thing. and man, can i just say im such a sucker for "right place wrong time" love stories? age gap aside, i was alright with buckabby until we learn she ghosted him in season 2.
in the end, while ali cares deeply for buck, knowing he's always in danger and seeing it for herself are just too much to stomach. lesson learned: he needs someone who will be able to handle the stress of dating a firefighter. enter taylor (phase ii)
disaster bis are back, baby! they start off as friends, but something is off from the beginning. buck jumps the gun, dropping hints that hes looking for more. taylor jumps the gun too, showing up to a double date thinking it's just a hookup. there is a significant lack of communication between them.
even before they get together we see that taylor often retreats into her own head when they're running on different wavelengths, leaving him behind instead of meeting him halfway. even dragging him along would be better; at least that would show she values his input.
we see this displayed most prominently in the treasure hunt; they have a couple moments where they're perfectly in sync (which visibly bothers eddie, and god i love that for me) and others where taylor hits the ground running and leaves buck standing in a cloud of dust.
we didnt get to see their honeymoon phase (tragic; i may not ship bucktaylor but i sure as hell like seeing hot people make out, bless you season 5 premiere) but if we extrapolate from monday's episode, buck is still resorting to using his body to get her attention - and even that fails sometimes.
we havent seen them hit any bumps just yet, but i think bucktaylor will reach a crossroads sooner rather than later. there will come a time when buck needs her to be there for him emotionally, and taylor either won't be able to OR she'll try, and it won't be what buck needs.
the lesson he hasn't learned yet: relationships need equal footing.
relationships that dont work out are important. they teach you what kind of person is right for you, the kind of person you want by your side forever. bucktaylor needs to run its course, or she will just end up taking abby's place.
and the thing is....
buck already has someone in his life keeping pace with him. buck already has someone in his life who understands why he puts himself in danger. buck's already (almost perfectly) in sync with someone who has been his equal since the day they met - and even went far enough to make that somewhat legally binding.
you can have my back any day. you could have mine.

pleas Elaborate on that double dee headcanon I wanna know
anon thank you so much for asking about the double dee ed girl. the trans of gender ed girl.
I saw this post a while ago referencing an interview with the show's writers. I have been looking for said post AND the interview itself for the past half an hour with no success and i refuse to look any further because all google is offering are reddit threads on how everybody used to think edd was a girl, so i'll just go ahead unsourced hoping i'm not insane and hallucinated it or something.
In this alleged interview, when asked what the Eds would become as adults, one of the writers replied something along the lines of "Double Dee will become a woman" and i was like well. yeah. Trans woman Double Dee makes sense. Why the fuck not. Despite never having thought about it before then. It just really feels right for some reason. I kind of forgot about it for a while, and it came back to mind while I was thinking about things and stuff for my older eds headcanons.
Tumblr media
I don't really plan on doing anything much with the designs and headcanons for the grown-up eds i posted not long ago, but the general idea for them was to represent the different ways in which i've found adulthood to be a gruesome ordeal to go through so far, to try and differentiate them from their tween selves representing the experience of a more or less carefree childhood.
I have this whole thing planned out in my mind about Double Dee growing up to be a painfully cautious adult, living life as a safe bet and always doing the most to never stray from the path of what is Right and Expected. Only to then have a well earned breakdown and realize that most if not all of the choices she's taken in life have been taken in order to please others. From her college choice, to the job she accepted once graduated, all the way to the belief that she has no real agency over her own identity, and that if everyone around her says she's a man and treats her as one, then disregard all the discomfort that causes her, she's gotta be one, right? Yeah no, the amount of layers of denial humans can operate under is amazing, but there comes a point in your life in which you kinda HAVE to take a good look in the mirror and put a stop to the bullshit before you go insane. A good starting point, in this case, would be to try and regain that lost authority over your own identity.
I realize nothing I wrote in that last paragraph was even remotely funny. Just me projecting onto cartoons, as I do. So yeah, to sum it up I think the idea of Double Dee being a woman is cool and The Boys would also be cool about it because why would they not.
Tumblr media
Let's also throw in some Eddy hcs while we're at it, because I really like the idea of Eddy having a long-time violently repressed crush on Double Dee, and that after the Big Gender Reveal his internalized homophobia would release the choke hold it had on him, leaving him free to GO FOR IT. GET THE GIRL, MAIN CHARACTER. Except he would suck at it because of all the pressure and the repressed feelings and whatnot. dont really care why he would just be bad at it. I just think it's cool when things are awkward and don't work very well.
The feelings would be mutual, too, because it just makes sense for unassertive, polite and conscious double dee to end up with someone who's ambitious, bossy and self-unaware. it makes sense as in: i think it's a really funny dynamic and i like it. And with her not exactly being a clueless idiot, she'd be aware of her own feelings being reciprocated. Her mistake would be thinking Eddy would actually take the first step.
Tumblr media
happy belated bi visibility day.
Also important, the name change. Which is proving to be an issue because I can't really think of anything good. You can't really change it that much, since the premise of the show is that they all have the same name.
Edda is an actual name that comes to mind but c'mon.
I mean. I'm gonna be honest, I actually kinda like the idea because my aunt is called Edda and with that Double Dee would have two aunt names. But yeah that's all I got. Let's just call her Double Dee.
I really want to go on but I don't know if anyone else but me wants me to. But anon thank you again for asking and giving me a reason to put my thoughts on this together.

My thoughts on “Buddie”
 1. I think if Fox could realize that sometimes you can’t *plan* for chemistry, it just happens, and when it does it’s magic and you need to let it play out, they would be so far ahead of the curve of other shows and fans beyond their core audience would take notice.  The material IS there to defend it actually happening against claims that they just bowed down to the shippers.
2. On the one hand, I believe that the writers are very deliberately writing a lot of subtext and the directors are leaving in scenes where the actors are making certain choices, both Ryan/Oliver and Peter/Kenneth/Aisha/JLH. But is it just as a “shout out” to the Buddie shippers, or an actual deliberate effort to make a point of how close they are and how dependent they’ve become on their relationship?
3. I’ve talked before how I think deciding on your character’s sexuality before you actually write them out for a while just doesn’t make for believable humanity based on reality. If we’re looking at these two examples,
Buck has been written in a way that could very well make him bi/pan and not everybody who is and is secure in their identity will go and talk about it constantly. I would also like to remind everyone that bi does not mean you have to stick to a certain quota, like keep your relationships 50/50 male/female. There are many people who are bi who tend to end up in more relationships/even just sexual ones with one gender, and that doesn’t make them less bi or pan. So just because we have only seen him have female love interests during the show, there are some scenes (”Your man crush on Eddie”/”I’m not setting you up with my brother/Hey Now”) that could be interpreted to mean that might not always have been the case, Maddie being the one who would have been there to witness it. We also see Buck not really caring about the social conventions - not only of who he dates - he is consistently written as meeting every person he meets on eye level - even making sure the guy who stole his identity to catfish women wouldn’t lose his dignity in death, but also romantically, we can see him building a connection with Abby through the phone first and falling in love with her as a person, and not caring about her being quite a lot older.
Eddie, and I’ve written about this before, is a little bit of an enigma. Again, we have only seen him in one relationship, and while it doesn’t seem like it was the happiest of marriages, in the end it really did seem like he loved Shannon and wanted to make it work. Up until Ms. Florez we have also seen him almost making a point of not looking to date (”They’re not my type”/”You didn’t set me up, did you?”), and that is pretty much all we know about him. Again, the fact that he was married to a woman and once flirted with one briefly, does not prove or disprove anything. He grew up in Texas, in latino culture, and spent a good amount of his formative years in the US Army, all of these can traditionally be quite conservative. From personal experience even I have seen many people who grew up in conservative environments fall in line with the expectations set for them by their communities (often very early, and Eddie and Shannon did get married quite young), especially if their community doesn’t provide a lot of LGBTQ-visibility or role models. Yes, Eddie does “act” straight, whatever that means and whether that is an actual concept, but the way he behaves in a lot of scenes with Buck, and I’ll get back to this in point 8., could be interpreted in other ways.
4. TV today has gotten a lot better at showing LGBTQ relationships that aren’t a) just on the sidelines b) serving as collateral emotional damage to drive the plot or c) are written in a way that is basically just taking a hetero-couple-storyline and casting two people of the same gender in it. I am worried that they think they can’t do the “coming out later in life” storyline again with Buddie because they already have Michael (which brings me back to point 1. Let the damn magic happen when it’s right in front of your eyes), and they can’t have another main cast LGBTQ character - or two - because they already have Hen (and Karen). Obviously these are not valid reasons, look at other shows like 911 Lone star for representation within the main cast, but of course, this is a double edged sword because there is a concern that they gave us 911 Lone Star to do what they wouldn’t or couldn’t do with the original. (On a side note, Owen Strand is the fairy godfather of Texas and I live for that show)
5. Parallels. This has been talked about a lot, and there are much better posts about it than this one. But writers aren’t stupid, or careless, so I do believe that to a certain extent they’re aware of how they are setting up parallels between Buck and Eddie’s love lives. We have them agreeing to “have each other’s backs” in contrast to Shannon telling Eddie that he never had hers. We have Eddie telling Buck that there is no one he trusts more with Christopher than him, while he makes it clear that while he thinks he can forgive Shannon, he doesn’t think he can trust her. We had Shannon coming back just as Buck decides to leave Abby behind finally, and we had Ali showing up when Shannon dies, and now Ana when the writers point out how single Buck is.
6. Themes. The episode themes in 9-1-1 are kinda like horoscopes, they’re meant to be able to work for multiple storylines and connect all the main characters through one focus. But we’ve seen a lot of themes surrounding family or trust or love that have an obvious connection to a Buddie moment on the show. Chosen Family. Home. Being able to trust your partner. Seizing the day. And even when it’s something that doesn’t immediately connect the two, the scenes are cut in a way that imply there’s a connection, like Eddie telling Chim to tell Maddie he loves her, because tomorrow isn’t promised. Chim calls Maddie to invite her to dinner to finally do this, and right before this we see Eddie asking Buck to lunch - this is probably just a coincidence, right? But we can be sure that the director, writers and cutters were aware of this, and made the choice to do it this way, for whatever reason. Because this is their exact job, telling stories through how they cut scenes together. 7. Christopher. So this might be what makes Buddie a little more unique compared to the, admittedly, dozens of other seemingly “straight bromances” that people have shipped. Most scenes we get with Buck and Eddie that are outside of work, involve Chris in some way. It’s probably safe to say that part of the reason they became so close is because Buck and Chris have a connection that I would wager goes beyond what most friends have with their single-dad-friend’s kid. We see how important Buck becomes in Christopher’s life, and vice versa, pretty much a few episodes after they meet for the first time. Eddie trusts Buck with Chris’ life, and he trusts him with any problems relating to Christopher that he needs to work through. Buck’s his sounding board for his role as a parent, which is interesting considering Eddie has other friends at the 118 that actually are parents? *cough* Chosen family *cough*
8. Closeness. As I said above, sometimes writers plan one storyline, but the magic happens somewhere they didn’t expect, and if that is the case, and you want to be faithful to your characters, you should seize that opportunity. I think we can all agree this is one of those cases where the chemistry is just off the charts. There are long looks, there is a lot of being in sync, there’s constant physical contact when they’re sitting or walking next to each other. Personal space, who? Again, this is something the director could discourage, or use a take that didn’t have Buck grab his belt buckle and invading Eddie’s personal space in his own kitchen, but they decided on this take. They decided on the take of Eddie clearly checking out Buck’s behind and Chim noticing. Now Buck seems to be pretty comfortable with closeness anyway, but Eddie isn’t the most touchy guy with anyone else, so this is noticeable. And it works.
9. Look. Somebody sat down and wrote “You want to go for the title?” and I would pay a lot of money to see the stage directions on that script because holy fuck. There’s a lot of info in their exchanges - and it implies that there are lots of moments that these two talk that we don’t get to see - Buck immediately knows about Eddie and Ana, and he knew about the situation with Shannon too (and didn’t hide his jealousy very well). When they don’t talk, it clearly gets to Eddie, who doesn’t have that many other people he really trusts and can open up to. Cue “husbands fighting in the supermarket”. But what’s also interesting to me is that their dynamic involves a lot of Eddie teasing Buck. “Exoskeleton” “Aren’t you still in that phase?” “You would have talked me into buying a more expensive one”.. and Eddie sometimes uses it to keep their conversations from getting into dangerous, emotional territory, like during the kitchen scene. And I don’t know about y’all, but that sounds like something I’ve done before when I knew there was something to get into, and I just didn’t know how or when.
_______________________________________
Wow I could keep going but this is already so long. I’m so sorry everyone. But I figured we all now have two weeks so we have time to do a lot of reading 😅Thanks everybody for reminding me about the things that do make it seem like Buddie is an actual possibility, because most of the time, I have to admit, I’m like 70/30 against the hope of it becoming reality. Long live fanfiction! In conclusion, please make it happen, or explain all the choices you have made. YOU CAN’T!

When Eddie was younger, elementary school age, he was always the shortest boy in the class. All the other kids towered over him, which made him a target for bullies as they deemed him weak and fragile. Eddie absolutely hated being short, he hated having to stand on a stool to reach the kitchen counter at home, and he hated that he had to stand on his tippy toes to see over the other kids when there was a presentation in class.
The day that Richie Tozier moved into town was both the best and worst day of Eddie’s life. He was eight years old, still short and compact compared to his other classmates when this new boy strolled in, taller than everyone else. He had thick curly hair and wore large glasses that covered his whole face. His teeth were a little big at the front, visible when he smiled and he was so very tall.
Regardless of the crazy look the boy sported, all Eddie’s classmates wanted to be his friend. They would complement his Spiderman lunchbox and ask if they could have one of his cool stickers that his mother had put in there. Eddie just sat at the back of the class, arms crossed and legs swinging between the seat as his legs were too short to be able to reach the floor.
He was so lost in his thoughts that Eddie didn’t even realise the new boy had made his way over to him, until a lollipop was being thrust into his line of vision and he looked up. Richie was staring at him, all smiles and teeth as he bounced on the heels of his feet. “My mommy told me to give this to the person I wanted to be best friends with, and I want to be best friends with you!”
Eddie blinked, not quite believing what he was hearing, “Why do you want to be my friend? I’m so short…” he whispered and Richie had just laughed, plopping himself into the empty seat next to Eddie.
“Mommy says that smaller people have the biggest hearts. So because you are smaller than everyone else, it must mean you love a whole lot more than anyone else here!” Richie grinned. “Which in my opinion, is really cool. So will you be my best friend? I don’t know anyone yet and I really want a friend.”
Suddenly, the worst day of Eddie’s life had transformed into the best of his life and he nodded his head. “Okay. I’ll be your best friend. I’m Eddie.”
“Nice to meet you, Eds. I’m Richie.”
* * * * *
As they got older, Richie continued to grow taller than the rest of the kids in their year and by the time they were seniors in High School, Richie was capped at 6ft. Eddie however, was still short, his height sitting at a small 5ft 2”. Even though he was still the smallest in their year, it didn’t bother seventeen year old Eddie as much as it did eight year old Eddie.
The reason being? Richie was always creating ways to make sure Eddie felt just as tall as the rest of their friends.
Eddie wasn’t sure when it happened, but at some point in their years as friends, his feelings for Richie had developed into something…more than friendly. He wanted Richie’s attention on him all the time, he wanted Richie to make him laugh, to hang out with him and most importantly, he wanted Richie to touch him.
Thanks to Richie’s height, the rest of him was also on the larger scale, including his hands. Richie had massive hands and Eddie wanted to know what it would feel like for those hands to hold his own, for them to cup his cheeks as he leaned in for a kiss. Eddie shook his head, trying to will away any of the thoughts as he walked into the Derry Fair with all his friends close behind him.
The place was already packed with everyone from school, excited over using the stalls and taking part on the rides. Their friends all crowded around one of the stalls, but thanks to his height, he couldn’t really see what was going on, bar the movement of the man behind the stall’s hands. He sighed, taking a step back as bitterness seeped into his bones. Of course this would have been a problem, it always was when it came to things like this.
“Eds! Come here!” Richie called, turning around with a huge grin on his face. He rushed over to Eddie, wrapping a hand around his slender wrist and pulled him back to the stall. “You trust me don’t you?” He asked and Eddie nodded his head. Of course he trusted Richie, he trusted Richie more than he trusted any of his friends. Richie was his best friend, after all. He had no idea what Richie had in mind, but he didn’t expect him to kneel down in front of him.
“Richie what are you doing?” Eddie asked, tilting his head to the side. Luckily, everyone around them were occupied on the fair and not paying any attention to what they were saying or doing. “Get up.”
Richie firmly shook his head, patting his shoulder. “Up you get, Eds. Since you can’t see I’m going to allow you to spend the night on my shoulders. That way you can see everything I can see. You also weigh next to nothing, so it’s really not much of an issue.” He winked and Eddie flushed red.
He was glad that it was dark so no-one could see the redness on his cheeks. The thought of walking around with his thighs around Richie’s neck was not helping in the slightest, but it was also something he wasn’t about to pass up. Therefore, that was how Eddie Kaspbrak ended up walking around the Derry Fair on top of Richie Tozier’s shoulders.
He guessed that being small had its perks. He was small enough to sneak out of his house without his mother seeing him, he was also small enough to help Richie with his pranks when he had to fit into the TV wheelie that would take him to the intercom room. He was also small enough that Richie would let him sit on his lap during Ben’s track meets and well, sit on his shoulders at the Derry Fair, laughing at the odd stares and blushing when Richie squeezed his ankles.
So yeah, maybe Eddie Kaspbrak didn’t hate being the shortest boy in his class after all.

I’m With You (6/?)
Summary:
Buck has been serving coffee to the guy he’s dubbed “Mr. Perfect” in his mind for a while, but despite his crush, it was never his intention to wind up lying to Mr. Perfect’s family and friends – including the very attractive brother – about being his boyfriend after Buck saved the guy’s life. But a misunderstanding at the hospital with a well meaning nurse puts Buck in a tough situation and he just keeps digging and digging a bigger hole for himself when he can’t figure out how to tell everyone the truth. To make things worse, it seems like the attractive brother is onto him.

Eddie took his parents straight to the hospital when they arrived early the next day. He could tell right away that his mom was freaking out and worried. His dad had always been better at hiding his feelings but even then Eddie could tell that he was tense. Eddie was glad that he wasn’t the one that had been tasked with calling them. Pepa had done that.
“He’s fine, mom,” Eddie said as they walked to the room. “He’ll be fine.”
Neither of his parents responded.
When they got to the room, his mom leaned over Andrew, kissing his cheeks and forehead. Eddie thought he heard her let out a sob. His dad walked over and placed a hand on his mom’s back. Eddie hung back just watching them as his mom sat down and his dad pulled up another chair to sit at her side.
“What happened exactly?” his dad asked suddenly, looking right at Eddie.
Eddie had no idea how much Pepa had managed to tell them. He just knew that they didn’t know anything about Buck.
“He was knocked over by someone on a bike while he was getting coffee. He hit his head when he fell and he would have been run over by a car except that Buck saved him. Pulled him out of the way and called 9-1-1.”
“Who’s Buck?” his dad asked.
His mom sobbed. “My poor boy.”
“Buck is—” Eddie trailed off. He still didn’t fully believe it. “He’s Andrew’s boyfriend.”
The way that his parents looked at him was how Eddie had first felt when he was told about Buck. Had the circumstances been different, he might have laughed.
“Boyfriend,” his mom said.
“I know,” Eddie said. “I know it’s...unexpected. But he’s a good guy and none of us knew about him before the accident.”
“So it’s new,” his dad said.
Eddie was well aware that his father struggled a little with understanding sexuality. He’d actually come a long way since Eddie came out as bisexual back when he was in his teens. But still, he could see confusion in his eyes like the idea that two of his sons being interested in more than one gender was a strange one to him. He’d had time to get used to Eddie being bi and even then it hadn’t really mattered after he met Shannon and got married and had Christopher.
“Well none of that matters,” his mom said. “I just want him to wake up and be okay no matter what he hasn’t told us. Right, Ramon?’
“Right.”
“My poor boy,” his mom said.
Eddie figured that any reservations would evaporate once they did meet Buck because everyone seemed to just fall for Buck’s charm. Eddie couldn’t really blame them.
When it was time to go pick up Christopher from school, Eddie left to get him with his dad while his mom stayed behind at the hospital.
“Y como estas tu, hijo?” his dad asked as they drove.
[“And how are you, son?”]
“Estoy bien. Me and Christopher, we’re doing fine. He’s happy here, you know. He has friends and his school is good. Took me a while to figure all of that out but Andrew helped — surprisingly. But we’re good.”
[“I’m fine…”]
“I think a father always worries,” his dad said. “Your mom and I just want you to be happy and after all that nonsense with Shannon—”
Eddie let out a sigh. “Things weren’t good but I guess it worked out in the end, dad,” Eddie said.
“I know they did,” his dad said. “She still hurt you and Christopher and it would have all been avoided if—”
“If I stayed in Texas,” Eddie finished for him with a sigh. “So that we could have been there waiting for her to never return? I wasn’t happy there, Dad. I needed to move on and LA has been good to me. Christopher too.”
“I know, son,” Ramon said.
Driving in LA meant always hitting some sort of traffic at any given time of day. It had been one of those things that Eddie had to get used to when he first moved. He didn’t really get frustrated over it any more, he just made sure to check the traffic before he went anywhere. It was practically a habit.
“So, your brother,” his dad said eventually. “He’ll be okay?”
“The doctors think so,” Eddie said. “They think he’ll wake up any day now. The swelling’s been going down.”
“Good. That’s good. We were worried when we got that call from Pepa. The two of you being firefighters and so far away—” his dad trailed off.
“We look out for each other,” Eddie said.
Christopher was glad to see his grandfather. He ran as fast as he could go with his crutches until he was in front of him.
“Abuelo,” he cried and Eddie watched them hug. “You’re here.”
Eddie had just enough time to take his dad and Christopher back to the hospital before he had to head to work. Christopher was happy to spend the rest of the day and night with his grandparents and Eddie walked them both to the hospital room as he ordered an uber to pick him up. He had to cancel the uber a second later when he found Chimney in the hospital room with his mom and willing to take him to work.
So Eddie hugged his parents and Christopher goodbye and left with Chimney.
“You could have told me you were coming by,” Eddie said.
“I didn’t know that I was,” Chim said with a shrug. “Anyway, I think we have enough time to pick up coffee. You know, your brother’s been spoiling us. Last shift, I missed the coffee from Coffee Time.”
Eddie rolled his eyes but he knew that Chim was right so he didn’t protest as Chimney took them on a detour and then he followed him inside the coffee shop. It wasn’t until they were inside that he remembered about Buck working there. Buck was there behind the counter passing a drink over to a boy and his mother, making small talk with the kid.
There was a small line that he and Chim joined but it moved quickly as people placed their orders. Buck didn’t even notice they were there as he worked and it gave Eddie time to watch him unnoticed.
Buck wore a dark red apron over his clothes. A matching hat sat on his head turned backwards and his bright blue eyes were fixed on the drinks that he was mixing and putting together but he must have been doing everything with muscle memory because he and the girl at the counter kept a stream of conversation between customers. Eddie and Chim were too far away to overhear what they might be saying, but Buck was smiling.
“Hi,” Chim said once they got up to the front. “Can I — hey, Buck.”
Buck turned and his eyes widened when he saw them. “Oh — what are you guys doing here?”
“Missing the coffee. Any way you can hook us up with Andrew’s usual order,” Chimney said. “Minus his coffee of course since he’s—” Chimney trailed off.
Buck’s surprise didn’t wear off and the girl from the counter was staring at both of them and then back at Buck until she cleared her throat and Buck visibly gulped.
“Right,” Buck said, “this is Chimney and Eddie. They work with Andrew. Well, Eddie’s also his brother.”
“Oh,” she said.
“And guys, this is my co-worker Ali.”
Eddie gave her a nod and she smiled back at them. “Hi.”
“I — I’ll get on that order, then,” Buck said.
“He seem a bit jumpy to you?” Eddie asked, watching him as he moved around with a little bit less finesse than before.
Chimney shook his head and then Eddie saw him pull out his phone. He turned in a way that meant Eddie couldn’t see his screen but Eddie was distracted by watching Buck work and he was surprised when Buck actually took out his phone as he worked. He lost some of the tension on his shoulders after glancing at his phone and then a few minutes later he had their order ready.
“How much?” Eddie asked because Chimney hadn’t.
“Don’t worry about it. On the house today,” Buck said with a grin.
—-
Buck woke up that morning to sun streaming in through his window and hitting him in a way that meant that he wasn’t going to be getting any more sleep. Glancing at his phone told him that it was just sunrise and that he had a number of texts. First he clicked on the messages Pepa had sent.
I hope you’re having a good morning, Buck.
I was hoping to extend an invitation for dinner tonight. Andrew’s parents are visiting.
I know the circumstances are hard and you should have had the option of meeting them at a different time but they wish to meet and thank you.
If not tonight another night can work as well. Let me know. They will be here for the duration of the week. Maybe longer depending.
Andrew’s parents were in town. Buck dropped his phone on his chest and he didn’t move for a long moment even though he knew that he needed to if he planned to get to work on time. It was just that this was bringing in a whole new element to the problem. Andrew’s parents. Buck couldn’t lie to his parents.
“You already lied to everyone else,” Buck reminded himself.
Pepa had probably already told them about him. She’d lied for him.
Buck groaned. He rolled over and buried his face in his pillow. Maybe he could just stay right where he was and not answer anyone at all. His phone vibrated on the bed next to him and Buck had almost forgotten that he’d woken up to more than just Pepa’s messages. That usually wasn’t the case for him.
Hey, dude!
Last night was fun. The headache today not so much.
Good luck with the lies. 😆
Oh...this is Josh btw
Buck just shook his head. He didn’t even remember giving Josh his phone number but he didn’t mind. Josh wasn’t a bad guy and Buck appreciated having someone else know the truth especially since Josh found the whole thing hilarious.
Next came messages from Chimney.
Heads up: Andrew’s parents are arriving today.
What are you going to do?
“I don’t know, Chimney, I don’t know,” Buck muttered to himself.
Sending you good vibes, Buck. - Hen
Buck couldn’t help but smile at that. He really did like Hen. He didn’t want to lose her. And yet he would — that was just...it was the inevitable. It hurt him, thinking about it.
The last messages were from another unknown number.
Hi, Buck.
It’s Athena.
Just wanted to give you an update.
Andrew seems to be doing well. The doctors think he can wake up any day now.
Hope you’re doing well.
Buck let out a sigh. They just all made it harder and harder to not get attached and to not want to keep them. He just had to remind himself that he couldn’t and not because he didn’t want to but because his lie would destroy everything.
He didn’t bother to actually answer anyone mostly because he felt strange doing so and continuing to lie, but because he was also running late. He was lucky, he hadn’t been scheduled to open. By the time he made it to Coffee Time, Ali already had the place ready. She and Todd, one of the other baristas, were already dealing with the morning rush and when Buck clocked in and threw on his apron he went right to work alongside them.
It wasn’t until things quieted down some that Buck got to talk to Ali. He showed her all the texts from the morning.
“And you haven’t answered any of them? Buck, that’s so rude.”
“So is lying to everyone,” Buck said and he tried not to be too snappy.
Ali pat him on the back. “Hey, you got yourself into this. Maybe if you told the truth—”
“How can I? How can I just tell them I’ve been lying this entire time...how do you just come clean from that?”
Ali rolled her eyes at him. “One way or another the truth will come out and you’ll have to deal with it when it does.”
A customer approached so she turned away from him to take their order and Buck just let out a sigh. Todd was filling the order so it gave Buck some time to pull out his phone and start answering everyone.
To Pepa he was reluctant to say no even if the idea of meeting Andrew’s parents was daunting. He sent both Hen and Athena his thanks and then to Josh he just sent a thumbs up emoji.
I’m supposed to have dinner with them and the rest of the family.
What the hell am I supposed to do.
Thanks for the warning.
That he sent off to Chimney.
When it was just him and Ali after Todd had gone, Buck spoke about the whole thing more freely. He told Ali about Josh and how much Buck had no idea what to make of the guy.
“And that one is definitely gay,” Ali said.
Buck laughed at that. “Yes...so in all of this I did find a gay man. And no, I’m not interested in him.”
“It’s always been that with you,” Ali pointed out. “You’ve been in this funk ever since Abby and one thing I will say about all of this — the last few days, you’ve been happier. Stressed out, but happier.”
“I want to tell them,” Buck said and that was the truth. He did want to tell them. He just didn’t know how and it had been days since the whole thing started that bringing it up now would just make him look like nothing more than an asshole. But maybe that was the answer, maybe he had to be the bad guy and just never see any of them again.
When he said all that to Ali, she gave him a pitying look. “Maybe they’ll surprise you,” she said.
“Or maybe I just wait for Andrew to wake up and see where this all takes me.”
Buck was surprised later when he heard Chim’s voice. “Hi,” Chim said to Ali “Can I — hey, Buck.”
Buck looked at him and was even more surprised to see Eddie next to Chimney. “Oh — what are you doing here?”
Eddie’s lips quirked up in an amused manner. Chim gave no explanation. “Missing the coffee. Anyway you can hook us up with Andrew’s usual order,” Chimney said. “Minus his coffee of course since he’s—”
Buck could feel Ali’s eyes on him. She was flicking between him and the others and Buck could see that she was trying to figure out who they were exactly.
“Right,” Buck said, “this is Chimney and Eddie. They work with Andrew. Well, Eddie’s also his brother.”
“Oh,” Ali said and Buck knew her well enough to know that she was remembering how Buck had called Eddie the hot brother. Buck really needed to learn how to keep his mouth shut.
“And guys, this is my co-worker Ali,” Buck said.
Eddie gave her a nod and she smiled back at them. “Hi.”
“I — I’ll get on that order, then,” Buck said and immediately realized that he had no idea which of the coffees on the order was Andrew’s. He started making the full order anyway.
He felt his phone vibrate in his pocket and even though he usually didn’t check his phone while filling an order, he was hoping that Chimney had realized his mistake and sure enough Chimney sent him a list of the drinks he needed to make.
“How much?” Eddie asked when Buck had put the cups on a tray to carry out. Eddie was already reaching for his wallet but Buck shook his head at him.
“Don’t worry about it. On the house today,” Buck said with a grin.
“Thanks,” Eddie said and he lingered as Chimney grabbed the drinks.
“I guess there’s perks to this,” Chimney said.
“Uh, Buck, did Pepa invite you to dinner tonight? With my parents, I mean.”
Buck was surprised to hear it from Eddie but Buck nodded. “Yeah. She texted me this morning. I said I’d go.”
Eddie nodded. “Oh. Okay. I know it’s going to be awkward and all and I’m sorry about them ambushing you.”
“Eddie, come on, we gotta go,” Chimney said and he was already halfway to the door.
“Thanks again, Buck,” Eddie said and then he turned and followed Chimney.
Ali waited until Chim and Eddie had gone outside and even after Eddie had looked back at them through the glass window to wave before she turned to look directly at Buck. They were lucky there were no other customers around.
“So that’s the hot brother,” Ali said. “You were not kidding. And the other guy, he knows about the whole lie thing, right?”
Buck could only nod.
“Buck, this is really is messed up.”
Buck groaned. “Tell me about it.”
—-
“What was that about?” Chim asked as they made it back to Chim’s car.
“What?” Eddie asked.
“Are you still suspicious of Buck?” Chim asked. “Or is it that you like him now? Because I couldn’t really tell what that was.”
It was that Eddie liked him. He liked him too much, was drawn in by how downright cute and hot Buck was and the paranoid part of him was a whole other thing and all of it was just a confusing mess in his head.
“I still don’t think Andrew is anything but straight,” Eddie answered as Chimney finally got them on the road and on the way to the station.
Due to his work shift, Eddie was actually going to miss the dinner that Pepa had planned for his parents and abuela. It was a bit of a relief, but then he also did feel for Buck a little and he kind of wished that he could be there to keep him from being drowned by questions.
“And so what do you think is happening?” Chimney asked after a moment. They were stopped at a red light and he looked towards him.
“I don’t know,” Eddie admitted. “I just — why would Buck lie? That’s where I’m stuck because he’s just...he’s like a golden retriever, okay, and I just don’t see what the point would be. I really don’t.”
He looked away from Chimney, keeping his eyes fixed on the street in front of them.
“I really don’t know, Ed. But Buck’s a good guy.”
On that, Eddie could agree and that was exactly the problem because if Buck was as good as he seemed, then it didn’t seem fair to not believe him. It was the Andrew of it all that didn’t make any sense. Or maybe Buck was lying and he was so good at it, that they just couldn’t see it.
Getting to the station and into his uniform put Eddie in a different state of mind. Bobby and Hen were already there hanging out in the kitchen so after changing he and Chim went up to join them. Things had been a bit different since Andrew’s accident, his absence was felt by all of them. Andrew had been a part of the 118 before Eddie moved to LA and joined the LAFD and so it was strange to not have him be there where he belonged.
“I brought drinks,” Chimney announced.
“Figured you’d take over for Andrew,” Hen said as she grabbed hers. “Was Buck there?”
Eddie nodded as he sat down. “He’s going to dinner at my aunt’s house tonight with my parents.”
“That’s gotta be rough on him,” Bobby said.
“It’ll be rough on all of them, Cap,” Eddie said because as well meaning as his parents could be, they were already dealing with Andrew being in a coma and might not deal well with meeting a guy that claimed to be their straight son’s boyfriend. Or they would just love Buck.

Notes: The parents are in town! I originally didn’t plan on having them show up but then it makes a lot of sense for them to come running when their son is in a coma and we’ll see some more of them in the next chapter.

but i don’t dance
chapters: prologue of ? word count: 1,767 pairing: eddie kaspbrak & richie tozier (reddie)   summary:  eddie kaspbrak has the best times in the country for track and field, set up for a scholarship and great future. that doesn’t make high school suck any less. especially after getting outed to the public, and having to watch his team mates all turn on him. then one day, eddie kaspbrak stumbles into the music room after school, and the cute new theater kid decided to change his life.
Chapter Warnings: homophobia, slurs, f slur, q slur, mentions of child abuse,
Chapter Preview: Scratch that. It could be so much fucking worse. Eddie didn’t even turn to look over his shoulder as he took off at a run. Despite the situation, he was grinning to himself as he ran. It was always a mistake to give Eddie the chance for a head start. Ambush him and he was yours, but you’d never be able to catch up to him if he was already running.
It was something Eddie did well, running. Physically and metaphorically. Eddie Kaspbrak was always running from something.
Read on under the cut or on AO3.
Eddie pulled his hood up, despite the weather getting warmer and being slightly uncomfortable to be walking around the thick school pride hoodie. But like hell he was going to prancing around the school in his size-too-small track shorts and no shirt. Which were, of course, the option he’d been left with when his co-called team mates had stolen his clothes from his locker while he was changing and run off with them.
Eddie always tried to keep from shower around his team mates ever since The Incident early that November, just before his birthday. He’d wait around outside doing extra (unnecessary) stretches or talking to the coach, then go into the change rooms once he was sure that all the other guys had left. Which is what he’d thought he’d done that day, but apparently they’d stowed away where Eddie couldn’t see them and waited for him to get into the showers.
They could have done worse, Eddie told himself as he moved quickly out of the school. They have done worse. This is nothing. He continued to give himself the up speech, he was shaking and crying not to cry from pure embarrassment. Sure, he’d been through worse- harsh words and physical attacks, but something about this almost felt like a much more personal attack. Words he could shrug off, and physical wounds could heal, but Eddie would always have had to walk home half naked because the people who used to be his closest friends had stolen all his clothes.
“Hey, faggy!”
Ohhhh no. Scratch that.
Eddie made his way through the halls, still smiling, as he listened to the shouts of his team mates running after them, shoes hitting the floor. Two pairs? Three? More than would ever be needed to take him down- if they’d ever be able to reach him. But even Eddie had to admit that he’d get tired soon enough, maybe sooner than the others with his extra exercise after practice.
When he was sure that his chasers couldn’t see him, he took a sharp left and rushed into the first room he reached. He exhaled hard, pressing himself up against the door and letting his eyes closed. His breathing was labored, from breaking into a sprint just after his cool down, and it took him longer to realize he wasn’t alone than he’d like to admit.
Eddie let out a high pitched gasp of surprise when he opened his eyes and noticed the person sitting on the piano bench across the room, smacking his head against the music room door in his haste to move backwards but not being able to. The other boy was staring at him, a little gaped faced, and Eddie realized he knew him.
Richie Tozier hadn’t been living in Derry for very long, coming in just after Christmas break. He’d missed the Infamous Downfall of Edward Kaspbrak, but no doubt he’d heard all about it. He was the newest of Went and Maggie’s foster kids, living in the big house down on Neibolt street. Stanley Uris, as one of the members of baseball team, had been there during the big reveal and was Richie’s brother now, so he’d no doubt filled him on anything that would have been important to know.
As for Richie himself, Eddie knew very little of him. He was cute, in a nerdy way, with big head of black curls and thick rimmed glasses. His teeth had a certain straightness to them that had implied braces at one point, and there was an explosion of freckles that covered his cheeks and nose. His outfits were loud and demanded attention when he’d first started at Derry High, but in the months since he’d begun to settle in he’d tamed down to neutral coloured sweaters and jeans.
If rumours were to be believed, Richie Tozier had his eyes on lead in the end of year musical, and nobody had cared enough to tell him he was playing with fire. Or if they had- Richie wasn’t good at listening to advice.
“Uh, hi?” Richie said, glancing around the room as though it held some sort of answers for him. “This is kind of a closed practice and- are you fucking naked under that?”
Eddie startled, both at the question and at Richie’s voice. He realized that this was first time he’d heard the boy talk, since his... special welcome back in January. Richie Tozier was made himself known quickly; loud, vulgar and spot light demanding. He hadn’t been the kind of person to stand for any bullshit- for the first week or so, until the students at Derry High knocked him into submission. Eddie hadn’t heard much from Richie since- not unlike Went and Maggie’s other kids, who knew it was best to keep a low profile if they didn’t want to be that days entertainment.
Eddie felt a little bad for wishing that just once- they’d be the entertainment, so he wouldn’t have to be.
“Uh, no,” Eddie said, readjusting the hood that had fallen down during his chase. He also tugged subconsciously at the hem of his sweater, though he knew it couldn’t make it go down any lower. That the entirety of his thighs were visible. He’d been fighting to get new track shorts since the season had begun, and he was really at risk of showing a bunch of parents and younger siblings illegal parts of him if they didn’t come in soon. “No, I have my track shorts on but they’re... short.”
Richie raised one eyebrow and Eddie thought that he’d gotten more personality out of the other boy during this small interaction than he’d gotten in three months of classes with him. “Whatever you say, naked kid. But I’ve got to get back to practicing so if you could maybe fuck off...?”
Richie didn’t turn back to the piano though, and Eddie didn’t leave. He just looked at Richie for a moment, frowning. “My name’s Eddie-”
“I know who you are, Eddie Kaspbrak.” Richie said blankly, but with a hint of a smirk on his lips. “It’s not a big school. You’re the reason I knew better than to tell anybody I was bi.”
Eddie felt a rough chuckle fall out of his mouth. “Glad I could help.”
Richie broke into a toothy grin then, waggling his eyebrows. “Nah, I’m kidding. This isn’t my first rodeo. I’ve been to fair share of high schools. My transfer scripts are probably longer than the Declaration of Independence by now.”
Eddie raised his eyebrows back at Richie, making moves across the room and jumping up to sit upon the grand piano sitting within it. Richie made a squawking noise in distress, but turned around in the chair to keep looking at Eddie. His eyes dropped to the widely exposed thighs for a moment before his cheeks turned pink and he looked up to meet Eddie’s gaze.
Eddie smiled sweetly at him. “What are you practicing for?” Richie continued to look blankly at him so Eddie sighed. “You said this was a closed practice so...”
“Oh!” Richie said, blinking heavily. “Yeah, yeah it is. The auditions for the musical are next Thursday and I’m trying to get my act together.”
“Oh.” Eddie repeated Richie’s original surprised response, but sounding much more somber. “I’m not sure if anybody has ever told you, but Greta Keene and Michael Johnson have had the leads in all the plays since like... fourth grade so-”
“I heard.” Richie said with a nod. “But have you ever thought that maybe that was because nobody ever went up against them?”
He had a point, Richie Tozier did. For as long as Eddie could remember, things just were a certain way. That included Greta and Michael being the leads in all plays were able to a part of. There were other drama kids, of course, but none of them ever went out for the leads; always choosing smaller leads. Last spring, nobody had even signed up and the pair of them had gotten the parts without even needing to audition.
“Look,” Richie said, sounding suddenly so serious that Eddie couldn’t help but stare at him. “I love music, and acting, and all of that stuff. I’ve always wanted to be part of a play, even if high school plays are stupid and low quality. And this... the first time I’ve thought I’d be around at a school long enough to bother auditioning.”
Eddie frowned. He realized then that he didn’t know much about Richie Tozier at all. He remembered when Went and Maggie took in Beverly Marsh, her entire story had been town wise news by the end of her first day. She’d only come from one town over, and the original story had been plastered all over local television when it had happened. But Richie? Eddie didn’t even know where he’d moved from, let alone what had happened to his parents and why he was in foster care.
“I’m not throwing away my only shot just because some self entitled kids from the suburbs think they’re entitled to the leads just because nobody has ever dared to question them.” Richie finished with a firm nod, before turning back to the piano and putting in a tune that Eddie vaguely recognized from when he forced to take music class but in junior high.
“You’re right.” Eddie said simply, shrugging up one shoulder. “Things are too status quo around here sometimes. Shake it up. And even if you don’t get it, I think I’d like to see Greta and Michael sweat it out. Just... be careful. People around here don’t like change.”
“You shouldn’t be so nice to me.” Richie said, shaking his head and changing the tune to something a little darker, a little more foreboding. Eddie’s arm erupted into goosebumps. “What would hanging out with the freaky foster kid do for your pretty boy jock reputation?”
Eddie laughed. “Trust me. My reputation is beyond saving. Might as well sit back and enjoy the chaos.”
Richie Tozier narrowed his eyes, but he also grinned.

i need some to write me a fucking richie in a bi-crisis one shot. even if it’s not you ,,, someone !!!
me?? projecting onto my favorite character?? you bet lol
also just a warning this is very angsty, but it has a positive ending!!
thank you as always for the prompt
pairings: this is mostly richie-centric, with some light bichie and beverie and heavy reddie
words: 3,119
warning: biphobia (both internalized and external)
Richie Tozier knew that “bi” was abad word before he even knew what it meant.
“Kaylie is telling people she’s binow,” he overheard his classmate Greta say to her friend Sally one day beforetheir English class started, both of them in the row right behind Richie.
“Ugh, that’s so gross,” Sallygagged. “Why would you ever want anyone to think that?”
“I don’t know,” Greta replieddisdainfully. “Attention, I guess.”
“I wouldn’t want that kind of attention.”
“Me neither.”
“Is being bi even a thing?”
“I don’t think it’s really a thing, but I heard she askedMegan if she could finger her,” Gretastage whispered. Sally gasped in horror.
“What the fuck?”
“I know,” Greta said sagely. “It’sreally scary, actually.”
“Poor Megan.” Then, after a pause, “Ihope she doesn’t try to finger me.”
“She might,” Greta giggled, “she’llhump anything with a pulse, apparently.”
That’s how Richie Tozier learnedthat “bi” was a dirty word. He was in the seventh grade.
Everything that Richie heardthereafter did little to change his beliefs about that. The only time he heardthe word “bi” was in a whisper, a hushed tone of disgust, scandal. Allthroughout middle school he never once heard the word used in a positive way.By second semester in eighth grade, just hearing the word made him flinch. Itbegan to scare him when he realized that not all boys wanted to kiss theirfriends.
He brushed it off though. Hethought plenty of girls were pretty, blushed just as hard around them as any ofthe other boys in his grade, his eyes magnetically drawn to them. He even had alittle crush on Bev for like a month, and after that a different girl everyweek.
But his eyes were also magneticallydrawn to Bill. He looked at Bill’s lips for just as long as he looked at BettyRipsom’s or Carla Bordeaux’s, maybe even for longer. He got that same guiltyjolt he got when looking at the old Playboys hidden under his bed when Bill senthim a link to a gay porn website as a prank one day. But these things were easyenough to brush off, to ignore, to deny. What was harder to brush off was therealization Richie had one day freshman year that hit him like a speedingtrain: the realization that he was in love with his best friend.
Richie didn’t think anything of it;he and Eddie had always been closer to each other than any of the others. Buteventually Richie began to realize that the only other losers besides himselfand Eddie who cuddled anymore were Bev and Bill. The group of seven was in Bill’sbasement watching a movie like they did every Saturday night. And just likeevery Saturday night, Richie’s arm ended up around Eddie’s shoulders, Eddie’shead resting against Richie’s chest, his entire body curled in toward him.Richie’s heart felt like it was trying to punch its way out of his chest as herealized none of the other guys were cuddling like he and Eddie were, that noneof them ever did. But none of them were looking at him strangely, and he likedholding Eddie, so he kept his arm around him.
But the thing was, he really like having his arm around Eddie.Richie loved being in the same roomas Eddie, loved making him laugh, loved hearing about his day and playing videogames with him and talking about comic books and school and the future andevery other topic under the sun with him. His skin sparkled with electricityevery time Eddie’s skin brushed against his, his heart going into overdriveevery time Eddie came to him firstfor a hug or to cuddle. He found himself inexplicably angry when Eddie wouldlean into Bill or rest his head on Mike’s shoulder or laugh really hard at ajoke Stan told. And then one day, when he planted a kiss on Eddie’s cheek thatwas just a little too close to his mouth when it was just the two of them,Richie made the sudden, sinking realization that he was in love with Eddie. Heloved his best friend, his best friend who was a boy, more than any girl he’d ever liked.
Richie went home that night andsobbed into his pillow as a barrage of memories came crashing down onto him: memoriesof his heart rate picking up when a junior boy in his choir class laughed atone of his jokes; of lingering gazes that were averted in a panic in the lockerroom; of sharing a bed with Bill during a sleepover that was just the two ofthem in seventh grade, lying awake staring at Bill’s back, blaming the latehour on the fact that he wanted more than anything to wrap his arms around Bill’swaist and hold him tight. And now, the ever-present desire to kiss Eddie, tofeel how soft his lips were, to show him that he loved him more than he lovedanyone else, to vow to be there for him always and forever. Richie cried untilhe couldn’t anymore, until his eyes were dry and his throat sore. His musclesquivered as he wrapped himself up in a blanket, as though trying to hide fromthe realization.
He liked girls. But he also likedboys. That made him bi, and that made him dirty, disgusting, desperate, attention seeking. It made him predatory.
The losers immediately sensed theshift. Richie hid how miserable he felt well enough, but he refused to let Billand especially Eddie touch him. He sat as far away from him as he could, refused to even look at him. God, Eddie would hate him so much if he knew howhe felt. He hated himself for putting Eddie in that situation, for being such afucking creep, for taking advantage of Eddie’s trust and friendship. He eventried to ask Richie about it, which made Richie’s heart break even more. EventuallyEddie stopped trying, and though Richie thought he’d be relieved when Eddiefinally stopped touching him and asking him to hang out, he felt like a chunkwas missing from his chest. Sure, Eddie still laughed at his jokes, and theystill carried on with their usual banter, but they sat on different sofas onmovie nights, and there were no more comic book sessions or one-on-one SmashBros marathons. There was no more hand holding, no more smell of Eddie’sshampoo as he rested his head on Richie’s shoulder. That was the coldest DecemberRichie had ever had. But he was doing this for Eddie, he knew it was the rightthing to do, so he shouldered on, telling jokes at lunch and crying himself tosleep at night.
Richie grew closer to Bev in thecoming months, especially after she broke up with Bill. Richie tried toconvince himself that he was in love with her; he loved her all right, and sheloved him, and they even made out a few times. But both of them knew the lovethey shared would never be romantic. Still, they spent all of their timetogether, having sleepovers whenever they could, staying up until two or threeor four in the morning talking about everything under the sun. Sometimes theyjust listened to music. Other times they just cuddled in the dark for a fewhours, neither of them saying anything but neither of them able to fall asleepeither. They went to concerts and record shops together, got drunk together forthe very first time, and then, a few months later, high.
It was the summer going into theirjunior year when Bev told Richie she was bi.
It was one of the few times Richiewas genuinely speechless. “What?” he breathed, feeling like the wind had beenknocked out of him. She had said it so simply, almost casually, matter-of-fact:“Hey Rich? I’m bi.” Richie couldn’t believe what he was hearing; he felt likehe’d just been caught watching porn or cheating on a test.
“You know, like, I like boys andgirls and everyone else,” Bev explained. She smiled, but Richie could tell itwas fake, nervous. Richie hated that he had done that, but he was genuinelyfloored.
“How do you know?” he asked, histhroat closing up. Bev looked around, visibly uncomfortable.
“Uh, there are guys I think are hotand girls I think are hot?” she said uneasily. “And I’ve enjoyed kissing guysand girls-”
“You’ve kissed a girl?” Richieasked, his voice breaking with emotion. Beverly narrowed her eyes at him, andhe was both relieved and terrified to find them melt into realization, recognition.
“Yeah, I hooked up with a girl Imet on vacation two week ago,” she answered. Richie pondered this, his eyeswide and mouth dropped open in a small “o” shape. Bev rested a gentle hand onhis knee, bringing him back from his mind.
“I’m glad you told me,” he saidearnestly, willing the tears out of his eyes.
“So am I,” Beverly smiled beforepulling him into a tight, tight hug.
Richie cried again as soon as hegot home that night, but this time he couldn’t even distinguish what he wasfeeling; it felt like relief, like joy.Bev was bi. Richie’s very best friend was bi. Bev wasn’t dirty, nor anattention seeking slut; she was one of the best people Richie knew. She waskind and brave and smart and strong and loyal and funny and sweet. And she wasbi. Richie sat with that for a while, and he could feel his chest gettinglighter as he fell asleep.
Richie felt a lot better afterthat. He still had bad days, and he struggled to accept that it was okay for himto be bi, but knowing that being bi didn’t make Bev a bad person helped himfeel better about himself, bit by bit, day by day. Still, he couldn’t gethimself to say it out loud. He wanted to, so many times he tried to tell Bev,but the words wouldn’t come out. Richie had a feeling she knew anyway though, and he was grateful that she never pushed him to tell her, to tell anybody.
Eddie told the other six that hewas gay the day before junior year started. They were hanging out in theBarrens and he just said it. Everyone was happy for him, congratulating himeven. It took Richie a second to get over his shock before making a joke, evenslinging his arm around Eddie’s shoulders like he used to, his heart bothsoaring and sinking as Eddie shoved him off like he always did.
Richie found himself in Bev’sbedroom that night unable to follow anything she said. “Are you good?” sheasked eventually, though there was a knowing tone to her voice.
“Bev?” Richie asked, his voicesmall as he looked up at her with wide, scared eyes.
“Yeah?” she said, taking his hand. Her eyes were open and inviting, loving, not a shred of judgement in them, butRichie still felt like he was about to vomit. He could feel his hands shaking, his palms sweating. He took a deep, shaking breath, willing the words tounstick themselves from his throat. Finally, he whispered, for the first timeever, “I’m bi.”
“Okay,” Bev smiled, her voice softand gentle, a smile full of love and adoration on her face.
“I’m bi,” he repeated, more tohimself.
“You are,” Bev giggled. “So am I.”Richie joined in her laughter then, but as soon as the laugh left his lips ittransformed into a set of sobs that wracked through his entire body, rattlinghis shoulders and making him hunch in on himself. Beverly pulled him into herarms without hesitation, holding him tight, rubbing his back as he let it out,all of the pain and joy and confusion and hurt and hate, so much hate, but alsoso much love he could barely contain it.
He pulled back and wiped his eyesas he caught his breath. Looking guiltily up at her, he said, “Bev?”
“Yeah?”
“There’s one more thing… I think I’min love with Eddie.” Bev squeezed his hand sympathetically as he hiccupped anothersob. “And I messed everything up.” He began crying again, although this timearound it was much more deflated; he and Eddie hadn’t hung out just the two ofthem in almost nine months, there was no way he could win him back, even as abest friend. Bev pulled him in again, stroking his hair.
“I think you should tell him that,”she said softly.
“What?” Richie asked, pulling backabruptly. “Why would I do that?”
“Because he misses you, Rich,” she said. Then, in response to his dubiousexpression, “Literally all you boys come to me with your problems. He hasn’tstopped missing you since December, Richie. He’s still wondering what he didwrong.” Richie’s heart sank in guilt at that. “Hey, no,” Bev was quick to say, holding his shoulders, “listen, it’s not your fault. I know how it feels, howdirty and wrong. I know how the guilt feels. It’s not your fault. I understand,Richie, and he will, too. He won’t be mad. Tell him when you’re ready, but tellhim.”
“Well,” Richie sighed, “fuckin’ nowor never, I guess.” Bev beamed at him in delighted surprise as he wiped hiseyes and got to his feet, gathering his things. He leaned down and kissed herhead, telling her, “I love you so much, Bev. You mean the fucking world to me,”before quietly making his way out of her house to his car.
He almost turned the car around tentimes in the three minutes it took to get to Eddie’s house. He parked his car afew houses down like always, still having the path to the tree in his backyardmemorized. He leapt into the tree, not letting himself think better of it as heclimbed up the branches. He hesitated for a moment, his fist hanging in the airbefore he forced himself to knock on Eddie’s window.
For a panicked second there was noresponse, and Richie almost made a run for it, but then the curtains wereopening and there was Eddie, wearing his pajamas and an unreadable expression.Richie waved awkwardly, and Eddie then rushed to open the window. Richietumbled into his room, rusty from not having done so in nearly a year. “Whatare you doing here?” Eddie hissed, just like he always did, but this time therewas less fire in his voice than concern. “Are you okay?” he asked, his armswrapped around himself, hesitating as he stepped into Richie’s space as thelatter stood up. “Your eyes look all red and swollen.”
“Uh, yeah,” Richie chuckledhumorlessly, scratching the back of his neck. “I, uh, I just came to say sorry.”Eddie’s eyes widened at that before going blank, his mouth a tight, thin line.It made Richie’s heart stop in his chest. “I know I’ve been acting really weirdfor a long time, and I just wanted you to know that it has nothing to do withyou, okay? I know we don’t hang out like we used to and it sucks, I hate it,and it’s my fault, okay?” Eddie softened at that. “I’m so sorry, Eds. I thoughtit was for the best.”
“Why?” Eddie asked, his voicebreaking. Richie lifted his hands uselessly, feeling genuinely nauseous at thethought of admitting it to Eddie. “I still remember the date.” Richie’s eyeswidened. “December 8th. That was the first day you started refusingto hang out with me, refusing to lookat me.” Richie’s heart broke as he saw tears welling in Eddie’s eyes. “I know becauseit all happened at once, and I had no idea why. Why, Rich?” he asked, the tearsthankfully not falling from his eyes. “If it wasn’t something I did then whatwas it?”
Richie’s bottom lip begantrembling, and suddenly he was crying again. Eddie hesitated a moment beforerushing to him, wrapping Richie in his arms. Richie was so relieved to betouching him again that his knees gave out and he fell to the floor. Eddiefollowed, stroking his hair and shushing him gently in his ear.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he reassured himquietly. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but I’ll always behere for you if you need me.” That just made Richie cry harder, both in guiltand relief.
“You’re so fucking brave, Eds,” heeventually managed to say, pulling away to wipe his eyes. He was unspeakably gratefulfor the way Eddie kept his hands on Richie’s shoulders, even as he looked athim in bashful confusion. “I’m so proud of you for telling us all today.” Eddie’sface smoothed out at that, and he ducked his head as a blush spread across hischeeks. “And I uh, I have something to tell you.” It was maybe the hardestthing he’d ever made himself say, especially with Eddie’s wide, brown eyesfocused solely on him, but eventually he said it: “I’m bi.” Eddie’s eyebrowsrose at that, his eyes widening. “That’s why I stopped hanging out with you, because I thought you would think I was gross if you knew. The way we actedaround each other…”
“Richie,” Eddie sighed sadly beforepulling him into his arms. “I would never think you were gross, no matter what,”he assured him. “I love you, you idiot.”
“Still?” Richie asked, hating howbroken and hopeful and vulnerable his voice sounded.
“Always,” Eddie murmured into thecrown of his head, stroking his hair. Richie gratefully breathed in the scentof Eddie, a smell he’d missed, one that made his heart ache. “So fucking much.”
“I missed you,” Richie said, notsure he could handle the L-word just then.
“I missed you, too.”
Richie left shortly after that, feeling better than he had in a long time as he laid in bed. He hadn’t toldEddie how he felt; that could wait for another day. For the night, Richie wasmore than happy to adjust to other people knowing who he was. If Bev and Eddiecould love him, bisexuality and all, then maybe he could love himself, too.Maybe one day he would even be proud tosay that he was bi. He had a strong feeling that day was coming soon.
