For FFXIVWrite Day 9, “fair”. Sisila, early Heavensward and then early post-Heavensward, spoilers through 3.0 and for dark knight quests through 50, ~400 words. Canonical character death, references to torture, grief, godtier bad coping mechanisms, implied murder.
It isn’t fair.
“What do you mean Lord Drillemont tortures people?” Sisila demands.
The fire snaps. It’s a warm spot in these horrible, cold, grey, miserable halls, and she’s grateful for it, but—Lord Drillemont is a knight. She doesn’t—he can’t just—
Haurchefant sighs. “Unfortunately, he is…not a good man.”
That’s an understatement.
“And he surrounds himself with many of the same, I fear.”
But…torture. Torture. That’s not right, even for enemies of the state—you kill people, you don’t hurt them.
Sisila opens her mouth to protest, then closes it again. She trusts Haurchefant. That’s supposed to be part of what being in love means, isn’t it? And…even if it isn’t, she doesn’t have anything else left. She was supposed to protect Nanamo, she’d sworn oaths, and Nanamo got poisoned while Sisila watched. Raubahn is probably dead too, and Sisila couldn’t even avenge him. If Haurchefant thinks there’s nothing they can do about a lord killing people, if they can’t gather a rescue army and ride in banners flying…
Maybe it isn’t an era for banners.
Haurchefant wipes the tears gently from her face, and Sisila realizes she’s been crying. “We do what we can here,” he says, and she nods.
*
Someone mentions Lord Drillemont on a clear, bright morning near the start of winter, and Sisila suddenly remembers his basement. They said he tortures people to madness, with or without proof of their heresy. And his guards—they do all that for him. They should have stopped him.
“We can stop them now,” Fray says in her ear.
Her voice is low and dark, something that tugs at Sisila’s wounds. “Stop them how?”
Fray shrugs with a clank of plate. “How else? You have the sword.”
She’s right. It isn’t fair that a good man lies dead beneath the snow while so many bad ones are still walking around. It isn’t right that Haurchefant, who always tried to be the best of knights, who gave Sisila something to believe in for months when she had nothing else, was killed, and Lord Drillemont and his men are allowed to ruin others’ lives.
If everyone else is too afraid to stop them, she’ll do it.
“Good,” Fray whispers, and the world goes black with rage.
Imagine the boys getting cursed to bear witness to “some of the most negatively impactful things in their lives” and they’re terrified, thinking it’ll be stuff like the invasion or Shredder or something-
Only to be met with multiple scenarios of their family. Saying offhand, but hurtful things. Doing hurtful things. Lots of scenarios that were inconsequential to everyone but the one most affected.
And they’re all scrambling, desperate to make sure the others don’t look too deep into it haha it doesn’t really bother them- but they all know the truth. Because they’re all in the same position here. It wasn’t on purpose, and they all know it wasn’t on purpose, but it still hurts.
It’s almost a relief, that they’re going through it all together. That they can apologize for mistakes, and accept that they’ve held onto hurt too long when they could have dealt with it sooner.
And that’s how they break the curse, reversing it into something different, as they’re told that before it leaves them for good they’ll bear witness to the most positively impactful things in their lives. And now they think they’ll see some of their best victories, some of their grandest adventures-
The scenes they see then are of the same cloth as their negative ones. Simple scenes, ones that most wouldn’t remember. Times where someone managed to make someone else smile, times where they were just so content to exist by the other’s side, times where they were just happy being there with their brothers, their family.
It’s the little things that go the farthest, because that’s what you experience the most in life. And they’ll mess up again, of course. Things happen, and they’ll never really know how their actions and words will be taken. But through the good and the bad, they’re family.
Ppl going "waaahh unpopular opinion but Alice is kind of annoying and obnoxious and I don't think I'd like be her friend irl" is so funny to me bc like.
God forbid a cast of characters be multifaceted and have actual flaws and unpleasant aspects other than "grr angsty hero" and "whoops i'm so clumsy". Sometimes character dynamics and arcs need to be prioritized above "who would i personally be niceys with irl"
2. bro just WAIT until you hear about season 1 jon lol
one of my favorite things about wano is that it has a whole bunch of zoro protecting luffy bits. from their reunion all the way to the start of the raid and during their confrontation with kaido + big mom
zoro protecting luffy always has a special spot for me ngl. luffy's the strongest in the crew and he's normally the one facing the most dangerous enemies, taking on the biggest risks and such. although luffy has definitely gotten help from/been saved by other straw hats and non-crew characters before, throughout the manga zoro's been shown consistently worrying about his safety and jumping in to save him whenever it's needed. he's usually the one to notice and signal to the others when luffy's genuinely in danger too (and luffy in turn has done the same for zoro). points at thriller bark again one of zoro's most impactful moments in the story is about protecting luffy, even.
but luffy does worry about him too! he's shown reacting to zoro getting hurt the few times it happens in his presence:
plus - after zoro momentarily stops kaido and big mom's conquest of the sea (taking the brunt of it by himself/redirecting it? the panels are a bit confusing to me but otherwise luffy and the rest would've looked injured from that particular blast imo), which leaves him pretty wounded as law later points out, luffy's already angrily going after kaido
When the fandom adopted Payu as the VegasPete son I was like, “Yeah, that makes sense, carry on”. But when they started pushing Prapai as the Kinnporsche son, I was like, “Eh, that’s a stretch.” It felt like they were only doing it because the other ship was doing it, ya’ know? But then episode 8 happened.
Arrogant, comes from money, works for/with his father, looks good in suits, used to getting what he wants, falls in love fast, painfully unsubtle flirting techniques, impulsive, sleeps around casually, guilty of dubcon, involved adjacently with the mafia via illegal street-racing? Yeah, that’s Kinn.
But also, charming, drop-dead gorgeous, loves motorcycles, chaotic gremlin energy, biggest dopiest smile when in love, good big-brother/caretaker, loyal friend, lots of sexual experience but NO romantic experience whatsoever, kinda slutty (affectionate), and a certifiable dumbass? That’s all Porsche, baby!
This episode changed my mind, it made a very convincing argument for Prapai being the Kinnporche son and now I am here for it!
don’t get me wrong I think the general interpretation of Leo being like “I put up a cocky front but deep down I don’t actually think I’m that great and that’s why I have something to prove” is good. It’s cool, plenty of drama/angst potential and probably what the creators were going for, I’m here for it.
But there is a distinct appeal to me of the slightly-to-the-left interpretation of Leo being like “it’s not a front, I know I’m that good/smart/skilled, but I also know I’m seen by others as just the goofball face man and that’s why I have something to prove.”
Danny plops into the DC universe, either clockwork shenanigans or runaway, or ghost king duties. He’s learnt from his stint as Phantom and whatever identity reveal/wes weston shenanigans that he probably shouldn’t use the name “Danny” especially since he’s in a new world where he doesn’t know how much people will care about identities, or like, how people would react to ‘Danny’ as the name for a king that’s supposedly thousands of years old.
He won’t be using his Human side much in this new world, only his ghost form, because he’s either on ghost business or for a vacation where his rogues won’t just keep getting stronger or Clockwork needing him to run ‘errands.’
So, of course, he has to choose a new name for his Ghost King Persona to go by.
He chooses ‘Lazarus.’
He doesn’t know Lazarus Pits exist, but the JL sure as hell does, and this green death-themed hero sure sounds like a bad omen.
Okay so long story short, my love for pigeons reignited over the last few days and I drew only pigeons for like a week to the concern of everybody who saw me enter that state of mind.
The first three are drawn based few different pigeon shots I found, the two after that are referenced from my weirdly pixelated vacation pics and the last one is so high quality because my bestie @wilczuuu let me use one of their gorgeous photos for reference.
Also just for fun I filmed the last one as a timelapse to see that that would look like
I struggle a lot with bird anatomy and while these drawing made me get a firmer grip on that, I'm still super confused about that. So if anyone has some experience with drawing birds and would like to share some tips I would be very thankful.
(based on this post by @waterfire1848) what if: sokka and zuko befriend each other in ba sing se!! after the initial shock, they eventually trust each other and even get matching earrings! besties!!
[ID: This is a three panel comic of a conversation between Sokka in his regular outfit, and Zuko as the Blue Spirit, both drawn in warm colors during a sunset. The first panel is a panoramic view of the two sitting on top of a roof in the Ba Sing Se skyline, surrounded by artificial lights. In the second panel, Sokka attentively watches a serious Zuko saying: “Halloween is so stupid. Dressing up, pretending to be someone you’re not...”. In the third panel, Sokka grabs at Zuko’s shoulder with one hand and gestures wildly with another, telling him: “You are the Blue Spirit!”; to which, he only looks away embarrassed and softly responds: “I know...”. "You fucking left. I didn't do that. You did." Steve isn't yelling, his voice is just hard and cold. Eddie wishes he was yelling instead.
"I had to go," is all Eddie can say back, pleading at Steve to understand.
Steve does, is the thing. Eddie watches as the fight drains from Steve. Steve has always known him, in ways that terrified Eddie. Steve has always cared about him in an overwhelming way. Like the not yelling right now. Steve has every right to scream at him; he deserves it completely because he did leave. He packed his shit in the van and drove west until the ocean stopped him.
But Steve won't yell at him, because years ago, the first and only time Steve had yelled at him in a fight, Eddie'd frozen up, had a panic attack remembering his asshole father yelling at him and what always followed the yelling.
So even now, years later, Steve still won't yell at him.
"Go home, Eddie," is what leaves Steve's mouth next. "I can't do this."
"Steve, please," Eddie should leave. If he were a better person, he would have but instead he stays in the doorway of Steve's home, "I just want to apologize."
Steve lifts his eyes and stares Eddie down. "For what."
That's the crux of it, isn't it? What is he apologizing for? Everything? Nothing? Eddie gets the feeling that there's only one correct answer here and he's worried he'll be wrong.
"Sorry for going, even when I asked you to stay?" the hard tone is back in Steve's voice, "sorry for just walking away when I asked you to ask me to go? How you wouldn't do? Sorry about how you just ripped my heart out, rejected both options -you stay, or I come with- and then just walked out my house, my life, like it was the easiest thing in the world for you to do?
"This wasn't a-a two-sided fuck up, Munson. This is on you. I said 'stay' and you said you had to go, so I said, 'then ask me to come with' and you didn't. And if you couldn't even ask me, I wasn't going to follow after like some-" he cuts himself off and the breath Steve sucks in is watery. Eddie can see the tears gathering in his eyes, "I wasn't going to beg you to love me then. And I won't do it now."
"I fucked up," Eddie blurts, "I fucked up so bad and I'm sorry. I am so sorry that I didn't... I didn't give you a choice. I won't make excuses for myself, or explain -unless you want me to- but that's what I'm sorry for. I made a decision for both of us and that was fucked up."
"Glad we agree," Steve says, before sighing and stepping back, opening the door wider, "I've spent a long time wondering why you did it. If you're offering an explanation, I'll listen. If you give me an excuse, I will throw you out of my house."
