This was this love language because the two were dating. The powerful Overlord was dating the falling angel ceo of Hell. Vox was fascinated that (Name) was a falling angel, and built a company on helping falling angel especially since they made a lot of money. But Vox didn't love them for the money, he loved them for their passion, fiery attitude, and being able to stand for themselves. Vox was glad that (Name) was his girlfriend.

✥- The two helped each other out. Vox made sure that (Name) had all the power and influence she needed for her company. And made sure that Vox any of his associates were protected from the angels. ✥- Vox loves to spoil (Name), he loves getting her a ton of gifts and outfits. Only the best for his woman, he especially will rent out her favorite restaurant so that they can have it all to themselves and order whatever they want off the menu. Vox once rented out Loo Loo World for their anniversary and they had a lot of fun. But (Name) laughed her ass off because Vox was screaming like a little girl because of a roller coaster ride and he could hit the targets at one of the games after bragging about how he'll win her a prize but in the end, it was (Name) that one him a large plush toy of a wolf bear that he keeps in his bedroom.

✥- (Name) also spoils Vox. She treats him to fancy dinners, gets him the most cleanest and comfortable suits. Sends him a shit ton of birthdays money. (Name) also spoils him in affection with kisses and pet names. Sometimes in public which Vox doesn't mind. He wants people to know that (Name) is his girlfriend anyone who even tries to flirt with her has to deal with Vox.

✥- Vox will brew up a hot boiling pot of rant when he talking about Alastor which (Name) finds annoying because she didn't care about Alastor and wasn't afraid of him. So whenever Vox got worked up to the point his ranting was annoying (Name) she would say. " He's starting to sound more like a crush that you want to kiss instead of a rival, maybe he should be your boyfriend. " (Name) said smirking. Vox would buffer a bit before making a face of disgust. " I don't love that mediocre show host, don't ever think or suggesting that. " Vox said. He would walk off, finally (Name) could read in peace.

Vigilante dream! Let’s be honest he is exactly dramatic enough that when he is orphaned, he uses the endless family fortune to become a crime fighting vigilante known as The Nightmare.

The Nightmare roams the streets of Gotham London, known only by the black of his cape and the way he will beat up criminals, leaving them blubbering and tied up for the police.

By day Dream plays the part of the rich fuckboi who sleeps with models and parties on his yacht and causes a pregnancy scare/broken marriage a month.

One dark night, however, Nightmare comes across a young man being harassed by a group of shady criminals in an alley. He’s fighting them off using his laptop bag as a weapon. nightmare intervenes and beats up the attackers but before he can vanish, the man he saved promptly grabs his cape and introduces himself as hob. And then he asks nightmare if he can interview him for the local paper.

Hob is an investigative reporter who pissed off the local mob. He disguised himself as a stripper to infiltrate one of their clubs and got all kinds of very good personal and very criminal intel. They were planning to make him regret it. He’s very grateful that he isn’t going to be worked over and dumped in the river and he is also very eager to give the famous Nightmare a public platform. Lots of people criticize his work but hob believes his motives are good.

Obviously nightmare shakes him off and goes back to brooding on rooftops.

The next time he sees hob it’s at one of Dream endless’s lavish fundraisers. Hob’s there to cover the event for the paper and he looks even better in a burgundy suit than he did in ripped, muddy clothes in the alley. dream was intrigued by him to begin with so this time, as fuckboi dream—the dream everyone wants—he hits on hob, with all the assholery you’d expect from a trust fund baby.

And hob turns his nose up at Dream. He scolds him for doing the bare minimum for the city and expecting hob to just bend over for him because he’s rich.

(…hob still sucks his cock in a coat closet. He can’t help it. Dream has suuuuch a pretty cock.) but still!! Hob chews dream out. Dream is pretty surprised. He doesn’t know what to make of it.

Here’s the catch. While Hob doesn’t care for Dream, he is enamored with Nightmare. He puts himself in deliberately dangerous situations hoping to be saved and steal moments of his time. And Nightmare saves him. Every time. Hob savors the five minute conversations he gets before Nightmare vanishes. He tries to engage him in conversation. Nightmare gives one word answers and then melts into the darkness. Hob is in love.

Dream is having a crisis. Somehow his brave reporter crush loves Nightmare, who can never be with him. And while he’ll ride Dream’s cock, he turns Dream down if Dream even hints he wants more. And he can never know they’re the same damn person.

It’ll come to a head eventually. Someone will notice nightmare’s fixation on hob. Plus, hob won’t stop writing damning stories about the mob, and the target on his back is growing. And nightmare is a one-man-army—one day someone will come for his head and just might win.

For now it’s just a hot mess.

I’m literally obsessed with this okay. Dream would be the funniest most cringefail vigilante. Like yeah he’s good at solving crimes, but he’s such a wet cat about the whole thing. And his playboy alter ego is even cringier. As Hob doesn’t hesitate to point out, when he first meets Dream at a city gala.

It’s such a disaster! Hob is only sleeping with Dream to try and get over his major crush on Nightmare, who he thinks he’ll never have a chance with. He even tells Dream while they’re in bed together. Which is equal parts humiliating and hot. He goes on and on about how amazing Nightmare is while Dream fucks him and tries not to seem like he enjoys that way Hob praises his vigilante self. Hob will begrudgingly admit that there is at least a passing physical resemblance between Dream and Nightmare, and that’s the only reason Hob gives Dream a modicum of attention. He does have such a pretty cock (although no doubt, Nightmare’s would be even prettier).

Of course, Hob ends up getting kidnapped by some villains who have figured out that he seems important to Nightmare. He’s basically bait to lure the vigilante in. Dream is in the middle of a business thing and he absolutely panics when he gets sent a video of Hob all tied up in a basement somewhere. He panics so much, in fact, that he forgets to change into his costume. He mounts a rescue with nothing but a Tom Ford suit and a few handy gadgets that he designed.

And Hob is like “what are YOU doing here?” When Dream busts through the door. The last thing Hob needs right now is a trust fund himbo getting his ass kicked in the middle of everything. But Dream doesn’t answer. He unties Hob, sets up a motion activated explosive to blow up the villains, and literally flies out of the basement with Hob in his arms.

And Hob is like. Oh fuck. Maybe I was the himbo all along. But hey, at least he knows that Nightmare’s cock is really pretty!!

Maybe having a rich fuckboi boyfriend wouldn’t be so bad after all… as long as Dream promises to fuck him in the nightmare costume every now and then!

🌟OPEN DISCUSSION about the 2020's era of shipping culture, Sonadow in the Sonic Fandom, and how well-intended activism can circle back to the language and violence of oppressors 🌟

INTRO

I gotta get something off my chest in regards to shipping. I wasn't super invested in the shipping part of the Sonic Fandom community when I was growing up. There were a few ships I liked and I enjoyed the fanart people made of those ships. And then I forgot about it for a number of years. Now in adulthood I am getting back into shipping Sonic characters a bit more, because it's fun to look back at the things I liked as a kid and seeing how my opinions have changed since gaining more life experience. Plus I've become much more active on the internet, in Fandom spaces, and more aware of social justice issues during adulthood. So here is a long-ish essay where I gather my thoughts about Sonadow shipping, fandoms, and activism together💙

MIDDLE CHILD EXPERIENCE IN THE SONIC FANDOM

It's odd being a Middle Child of the Sonic Fandom "family" that grew up during the age of "cringe culture" cyberbullying and shipping wars. I was aware of the stereotypes and disdain people had both on and off the internet toward the Sonic Fanbase and the notoriety it had. It influenced me to tone-down my external Sonic geekiness around my peers. While some of the stereotypes had some truth to it (when they weren't used as cyberbullying put-downs), I noticed that there was a very prominent difference how the Sonic Franchise/Fandom was viewed by the pop culture savvy public and how the fandom acted amongst/within itself as a creative and meaning-making community, despite the in-fighting that occasionally happened. On the internet, I oddly didn't experience or witness much discourse about ethics, specifically about shipping, when I was a kid cruising the internet for the fanart I liked. The spaces I visited were usually very supportive of people creating meaning, joy, and comfort with these ships. These shipping spaces loved Sonic × Amy, Shadow × Amy, Knuckles × Rouge, Sonic × Sally, Silver × Blaze and also any ship between Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. While there were specific ships that I enjoyed, I was happy to see other people enjoying other ships and hearing them geek about it. Yes, there was sometimes shipping discourse pitting pairings against each other, but I did not notice intense targeting or harassment in the name of "ethics" to the same degree as I am witnessing nowadays.

THE ETHICAL VS UNETHICAL DEBATES

Fast forward to the 2020's age of the internet and fandom culture. I had no idea what the evolved discussion about "ethical vs unethical" shipping was beyond just "this ship is the best" mentalities until about a year ago. After reading about the various viewpoints, I started out not really caring about the ethics of fictional shipping and not fully caring on which "side" I would fit, even though my views in adulthood realistically lean towards anti-censorship sentiments. However, it's important to note that if I'd discovered this specific "ethical vs unethical" debate when I was younger, I would have leaned pro-censorship, a view directly influenced by the small-town evangelical church indoctrination that kept my mind closed-off from the nuances of sociology, psychology, and humanity. I was the type of person that got emotional and reactionary about the idea of people being sex workers, about the idea of kink and BDSM being a normal thing between consenting adults, and about other socially charged topics. Then as I learned from other people's experiences and researched those topics, my mindset changed to be more supportive and more aware of all the nuances that go beyond black vs white thinking. I learned to not demonize people and instead find out the reasons WHY something happens or WHY people do something, and actually LISTEN to the person and BELIEVE them when they give their answer. Similar mindset changes have happened in adulthood since I've done research about both the generational divides and social justice intersectionality of this cultural shift in today's internet Fandom spaces. I am noticing this divide and these debates happening more and more in the Sonic Fandom.

SONADOW IN THE 2020'S

For some context, when I was a kid moderately involved with shipping content, I did not ship Sonic × Shadow. I somewhat avoided anything to do with gay ships or gay content due to my small-town church upbringing teaching me to not support anything LGBTQ+. So now as an adult having interest in shipping again, having discarded homophobia, embracing my own queerness, and having new understandings of the Sonic characters' personalities/backstories/dynamics, I am opening myself up to considering ships I hadn't been interested in before and ships that I actively avoided due to internalized homophobia. Watching Sonic Prime and the wonderful joy it sparked across the Fandom (in both shippers and non-shippers alike) was the marker when I finally started enjoying the Sonadow ship. It was after reading people's interpretations of Sonic and Shadow and understanding the ship more when I realized why Sonadow is such a beloved and timeless ship. In response to the new wave of Sonadow popularity, it's getting lots of heated criticism. People are having arguments everyday about both Shadow and Sonic's true ages, whether Shadow is 15 or 18 or 50, whether it makes any difference that SEGA quietly removed the characters' official ages. The debate creates these polarized "sides", with some people on one side claiming that it's an inherently unethical ship and claiming that you are a bad person, or at least suspicious in some way, for supporting it.

REPRESENTATION & QUEER JOY

One prominent feeling I have about the common criticisms toward Sonadow and about other shipping discourse is feeling alarmed that a lot of Queer people end up getting harassed because of these debates, sometimes by fellow Queer people. From my Middle Child perspective in the Sonic Fandom, the reasons WHY many people embraced LGBTQ+ Sonic ships was to create and celebrate representation in a franchise that doesn't outright confirm or have much on-screen representation. Even though Sega has a general "no official confirmed couples" mandate, the company has consistently supported and encouraged the fans' shipping headcanons including LGBTQ+ ships, and the company has showed real, tangible, and financial support for the LGBTQ+ community (to my knowledge). Tangle and Whisper in the IDW comics are written with specific chemistry that leads most people to view them as a lesbian couple with the writers' and company's encouragement, even if they're not verbally stated as "officially canon." Sonic × Shadow, although not canon, has been a noteworthy ship acknowledged by the writers, company, and voice actors as being one of the most beloved and celebrated gay Sonic ships. It has given Queer people a sense of joy, hope, comfort, and visibility ever since 2001 when Sonic Adventure 2 released and Shadow debuted as a character. The reasons people immediately shipped these characters together was never about being creepy or encouraging "unethical" dynamics. It was simply Queer Sonic fans, both closeted and uncloseted, creating meaning via representation as an act of queer resistance and radical acceptance. This has been a constant throughout the present day, Sonadow being one of the most recognizable and longstanding ships that inspires widespread Queer Joy that even breaks the boundaries of the internet microcosm.

LANGUAGE AND VIOLENCE OF OPPRESSORS

Now is where I will delve into the connection between Sonadow shipping (and overall shipping) debates and how well-intentioned activism loops back into mimicking oppressors. Thinking about how Sonadow is historically important to the Sonic Franchise, the Sonic Fandom, LGBTQ+ Sonic Fans, and maybe even video game history as a whole, I feel major discomfort and even dread when I see so many people (particularly those that are young) throwing around very serious accusations at (fellow) Sonic Fans and (fellow) Sonic shippers. Accusations supporting pedophilia or pedophilia itself is one of the most egregious. I've seen it thrown at Sonadow shippers, Vector x Espio shippers because Vector is 20 and Espio is 16 (despite it being another extremely popular LGBTQ+ headcanon-ed ship due to lack of representation), and even Knuckles x Rouge because Rouge is 18 and Knuckles is 16. It strikes me as counterintuitive and unnecessary at least, and actively dangerous at most/worst, seeing fellow Queer people utilizing the morality-policing, fear tactics, surveillance methods, censorship mindset, and rhetoric/language of our oppressors and using those things against the people in their own communities. Realizing that long-time Sonadow fans who felt inspired to come out and be unapologetically Queer because of that specific ship have been facing harassment and slander from fellow Queer people (who are likely younger than them), getting called "pedos" or "dangerous" or "suspicious" or "unethical" over the mere act of creating representation and Queer Joy with fictional characters and seeking some sense of comfort while surviving homophobic environments...bluntly, my stomach is churned and my blood is boiled. The last thing we need in this rapidly backwards-turning world is more in-fighting within the broader LGBTQ+ community that distracts our thoughts, emotions, time, energy, organizing, education, community-building, and activism away from the oppressors who are causing us real-world tangible harm, suffering, and death.

A random teenager on the internet drawing fanart of Sonic and Shadow holding hands, or even random adults on the internet drawing suggestive art or outright porn of these characters, is NOT going to be the catalyst that rapidly or gradually normalizes pedophilia or inspires worldwide support for unethical relationships. And yes, this includes content about the "weirdo/unethical/dark" ships that are found in the shadowy fringes of the internet and Fandom spaces. I am uncomfortable with a lot of it myself. But those ships and the people that engage with them ALSO DO NOT have the same level of impact and reach (key words: Same Level) that real life oppressive systems have to cause widespread suffering. The key difference that makes widespread abuse possible is that the real life oppressive systems are disguised as wholesome safe environments that develop trust and closeness with community members. Those oppressive systems and the harmful people that support them are usually NOT on the freaky/dark/weird fringes of society, they don't outwardly appear that way, and they demonize the "degenerates", not associate with any such label. The Catholic church institution is a big example, the institution covering up uncountable cases of their clergy members abusing minors while those clergy members are positioned as a pure, trusted facet of society that people actively look to for guidance, safety, and belonging.

At NO point am I ever going to say that everyone online is perfectly pure and that we should ignore everyone's behavior online. When we do encounter legitimate creeps causing harm to real people (not watered-down definitions of what being a creep means) we absolutely need to call them out and keep each other safe. HOWEVER, by pitting fellow Sonic Fans, fellow Queer people, fellow shippers against each other with this blanket "us vs them" mentality that overshadows the real life patterns and signs of how widespread oppression and real life harm happens, we end up accomplishing a lot of what our oppressors want anyway: divisions, distractions, and outright mimicking the violent language and behaviors that they display toward us at ourselves. This is the point where well-intentioned activism goes wrong and circles back around to oppression without meaning to.

Many people are super-duper-sure that they have dismantled all of their -isms and -phobias and now identify with labels and movements that are on the right side of history. But all of us STILL need to be aware of the fact that our thought patterns, behaviors, logic, and emotional responses can be tied to previously held beliefs and mindsets, and they can sometimes carry over and linger in our minds even after significant "character development". This is true even if we don't immediately realize it and think that we are a "safe person" within our own marginalized communities and for other marginalized communities. It can be really hard to identify if/when that is happening sometimes, but it is pertinent that we are actively checking in with ourselves, listening to constructive criticism, and cross-analyzing whether we are unintentionally mimicking the language, behaviors, and violence of our oppressors, and what effects that can have on the people in our shared communities and the people we care about.

ADDITIONAL: MY PERSONAL OPINIONS AND LOGIC ABOUT SHADOW'S AGE

Most of the fandom will continue arguing about Shadow's "true age" for the rest of time and how that "should" influence people's shipping headcanons. In my opinion, it is a very unnecessary thing to argue about simply because of the uniqueness and the fantastical nature of Shadow's existence within the Sonic Universe. Very specifically, he is a test tube science project super soldier who is immortal with an unclarified "birth date."

It's most likely that Professor Gerald Robotnik started the process of creating Shadow AFTER Maria was born and they discovered her incurable disease; Project Shadow could have taken a significant amount of time to complete considering all of the scientific processes, research, and intergalactic communication needed. It is also important to remember that Maria died when she was only 12 years old. If we are just talking about the amount of time that Shadow was physically and mentally conscious, communicating, and learning (excluding the 50 years he spent in cryo-stasis), this would mean that Shadow's age could be anything up to Maria's exact age at her time of death. Realistically his youngest possible age would be much greater than 1 day, since it probably took a noteworthy amount of time for Shadow and Maria to develop their trusting best friend and/or sibling bond.

Otherwise, in the less likely scenario, Professor Gerald could've had foresight and somehow gotten confirmation about Maria's condition before she was born with the scientifically and medically advanced technology aboard the Space Colony ARK, and then completed Project Shadow before she was born. But in EITHER possible chronology, Shadow could be around the same age or a handful of years younger than 15 (one of the possible ages in this debate), if we are to consider his game manual or Wiki-page biographies for his true age. This could put the Sonadow ship in the same boat of age-gap and maturity-difference criticism that the Sonic x Amy ship gets because Sonic is 15 and Amy is 12.

Even though Shadow is one of the most complex characters within the broad Sonic Lore, at the same time he's one of the most mysterious characters, especially since we don't have any official content that shows the complete scientific/medical/technological details of his creation process from start to finish. Everyone has a different opinion whether the game manual and Wiki-page age(s) indicates Shadow's number of conscious years lived, his current physical age, or both. People also debate whether his current physical age matters in terms of shipping ethics. Considering that Shadow is an immortal science experiment with the DNA/blood of an alien species and he could have grown up in a test tube, I like to think that any of the "teen" ages used in this debate could simply describe what his physical vessel looks like (compared to 100% Mobian hedgehogs) at the point Project Shadow was deemed successfully completed. It's possible that his early development deviated from that of a human baby, a Mobian hedgehog baby, and a normal hedgehog baby. Maybe he grew generally faster or went through the same developmental stages of his Black Arms alien siblings. Deciphering what it would mean for Shadow to become "fully mature", or even what "age" in general means for him, would require solving the complex puzzle of his circumstances: the science of genetic engineering that splices Black Arms DNA with Mobian hedgehog DNA to design a being that is artificial and specifically exceptional in every way. We DO know that Shadow's Black Arms DNA gives his mind and body a connection to the species' Hive Mind (which is explored in the Archie comic books) and that Black Doom's DNA was one of the necessary ingredients to give Shadow immortality and disease immunity. But that's the extent of what we know about Shadow's Black Arms biology, its overall effects, its benefits, and its downsides. In addition to this, the "immortal artificial super soldier with alien DNA" context brings up questions regarding Shadow's mental processes, intelligence, and learning capabilities. He could have gone through rapid psychological development, or can learn and gain skills at an enhanced rate, have increased intelligence, or have alien mental capacities beyond his connection to the Black Arms' Hive Mind.

The limitless SCOPE of possibilities for Shadow's physical and mental reality is why I completely avoid any attempts at shoving this complex character into the same quantifiable boxes of human OR Mobian OR normal hedgehog maturity, development, intelligence, socialization, emotions, learning, and age. Which is why I do not judge people for their shipping preferences and don't assume the worst of the people that ship him with other characters. An integral part of the tragedy and isolation of Shadow the Hedgehog as a character surrounds him being the Ultimate Lifeform, a being that is so unique, advanced, artificial, medicalized, scientific, revolutionary, mystical and powerful that he cannot relate to most of the other Sonic characters and vice versa. TRYING to force Shadow to be 100% understandable, relatable, and quantifiable both by our real-life human standards and by the standards of the other Sonic characters can diminish his uniqueness and essence, and it hinders the broad Sonic Fandom from creatively exploring the magnitude of possibilities (both shipping and non-shipping) that his mysteriousness inspires.

Now, judgemental and prying eyes are nothing new to you.

Whether it's because of the spider bite piercing on the left side of your lips, the color on your nails, or the moon and star tattoo on the right side of your neck, you can see them wherever you go.

You never really care what others think, knowing better than to stick your nose in other people's business.

If you're lucky, the most people do is stare at you like some attraction.

The worst is when someone tries to call the cops on you for being a criminal just because of your tattoo and piercing.

Luckily, your bangs can shield some curious eyes, and your long braided hair could hide your tattoo somewhat from the distance.

It piqued his interest how you wore a piercing and sported a tattoo but questioned how you knew the noble you were with, knowing nothing of his connections to you.

He could tell you weren't enjoying the party with how the others reacted.

Asking you invasive questions, trying to touch your piercing and tattoo, and giving backhanded compliments.

Albert managed to help you, pulling you away from the public eye and leading you to the quiet gardens, letting you breathe for the first time that night.

You sincerely thanked him, unsure what you would have done if your temper got the better of you.

He planned to leave you alone that night or at least put some distance between you two, seeing as how you were bombarded with questions as the crowd got way too close for comfort.

But you insisted for him to keep you company, just in case some other party guests tried to disturb you.

Seeing as you could have some information on the target and he is curious about you, he agreed.

Apparently, you had no connection to the target before this night.

He found you while you were out and suddenly asked you to be his date, saying he would catch the eye of nobles with you on his arm.

And you only agreed because he only paid a hefty sum of money on the spot.

However, Albert warned that the noble has a history of buying women he found interesting, only for those women to disappear suddenly.

Seeing as how you almost lost your life tonight, you again thanked Albert but assured him you could fight, showing the pistol and dagger you hid underneath your dress.

Albert's smile slightly widened before going back to normal, growing more interested in you.

You spent the rest of the night talking to each other, avoiding your date, who apparently has a packet of sleeping drugs in hand, confirming your suspicions.

During your conversations, Albert noticed how your values aligned with theirs.

Your weaponry skills, which you happily showed to prove him wrong when he teased you, demonstrated to be quite handy for their cause.

And you seemed to have the determination they look for to change this cruel, unfair world.

When the party was nearly ending, Albert offered to bring you home, making sure you were safe before he and his brothers could take care of the target.

The next day, Albert told his encounter with you to his brothers, also catching their interest.

Seeing as you could be an ally, William orchestrated a test for you, and you passed.

Since then, you have been part of their group.

Your job in the group was to be Albert's partner in gathering information and fighting.

Slowly but surely, Albert fell in love with you.

Spending time with you, getting to know you better, watching you slowly come out of your shell, he knew he wanted to be by your side as his actual lover.

He even found you wearing glasses to be cute.

It wasn't hard to tell as well.

Everyone knew Albert held you in a special place in his heart, making sure you were unharmed and away from the judgemental eyes of high society.

Sherlock Holmes

As for Sherlock, you two met coincidentally.

He was out getting groceries (after John's constant lecture on responsibility and Miss Hudson's deadly glare) when he saw you buying some food.

He saw you from the corner of his eye and immediately became intrigued.

This man has no shame as he approaches you, giving a nonchalant hello as he introduces himself and offers his hand.

You hesitantly shook his hand, giving your name as he stared at you for a few seconds.

"Huh... Never seen decorated nails on a lady before," he grinned as he held your hand up, making you pull it back.

"W-What are you-"

"-Let alone ones on hands capable of handling a sword and a gun," he grinned as he leaned down to your height, making you turn away and fix your glasses.

"And a piercing and a tattoo on exposed skin..." he continued his deduction as he looked at you with curious eyes.

"Tell me, miss... did you do all this yourself?" he asked as he brushed off your braid, exposing your neck tattoo.

You quickly hid it again and looked at him with furrowed brows, baffled and shocked at the man's character.

You excused yourself, hurriedly walking off, but Sherlock followed you, asking questions that hit the mark or just pure curiosity.

"I'm guessing from the state of your glasses you don't wear them often,"

"Tell me, why a star and a moon specifically?"

"How did you get your nails decorated?"

This went on for a while until you stopped and glared at Sherlock, politely telling him to leave you as you held back your irritation.

Sherlock nonchalantly brushed it off, saying he just wanted to know more about you.

"All right... Now listen here-" you angrily pointed at him, making him grab your hand and inspect your finger.

"I see... You use flowers for dye..." he muttered as you pulled back your hand, dusting it off.

"I think I can make a better polish..." he added, making you freeze as you looked at him.

"Here," Sherlock took out a pen and paper and wrote down his address, "Come to this place next week at noon... Don't be late," he gave you the note as he waved goodbye, leaving you in bewilderment.

Despite your better judgment, you found yourself standing in front of 221B Baker Street.

And just like he said, Sherlock made some nail polish that was shinier, better color, and lasted longer than the ones you already own.

You asked why he would make them, and he shrugged and said he thought the material could help with his job.

After that, you would visit his place from time to time, growing to like his company.

Until one day, you found yourself visiting him every day, even coming to investigations with him and John.

Sherlock would even scold you if you would arrive later than usual.

You'd never admit it, but you were truly glad Sherlock approached you that day.

Sherlock doesn't know it himself... but he would start looking for you and craving your company.

Your relationship was more platonic at the start until it started growing into something more without him noticing.

Even John noticed his best friend's change of behavior, but Sherlock would rather die than admit he's fallen for you.

...Well, not before you admit your feelings for him.

Futa Kajiyama and Remorse

by someone that would hit him in the head if they had the chance

The discussion over whether Futa's shown remorse over his actions is genuine or not is something that has existed for years at this point, and it'll probably always be a debate. Just thought I'd give my personal take on it.

Starting off by saying that it is very ironic that a huge part of the discussion on his character and crime is how genuine he is when he admits fault, considering his case is entirely related to social media, almost like how when public figures online mess up and everyone else picks apart their apologies and rate the sincerity of them (not saying it's a bad thing, influencers will explode before handing a good apology, i just thought it was funny to point out). That aside, let me actually talk about him.

First, what did he do? In short, he began a witch-hunt campaign and doxxed a middle-schooler over a claim with no basis that said kid tried to reason with him over and he ignored, (pressumably) pushing her to suicide. Fucked up. Very understandable unforgiven veredict in the first trial, since his denial of his actions was so strong, he had it coming for sure.

Now, his feelings around his crime. It's said a lot that he doesn't feel sorry for his victim, that he only feels anxious and "guilty" because he's facing consequences and he's scared of dying, so he'll do anything to avoid that (so; admit fault, even if he doesn't believe he was wrong). And he is stubborn, so it's not crazy to see it that way, but—

Does he really not care?

From the way I see it, Futa is telling the truth when he says he never intended her to die. Personally, I would "should've thought about it twice then?" 'd him if I could, but I can't in good faith call him disingenuous for saying he didn't want it to end that way.

People don't take their actions on social media seriously. This happens all the time. People will say they most cruel things to strangers over minimal disagreements, and they don't consider it to be that damaging because "it's just social media". Futa is no different than that.

He got a power trip from the praise he received after he called out a teacher for sexual harrassment (which is obviously an actually fair reason to dunk on someone), took it too far over something mundane, and it actually had real life consequences on an innocent person. And he knows this. He's always known. The very moment he realizes what he did is when he's horrified of himself and is visibly shocked— He didn't want this. But he did it, and now there's blood on his hands.

To call that reaction disingenuous, or relate those feelings solely to the fact that he's facing consequences now, is completely ignoring that it happens before he's aware about receiving backlash from his friends.

That's where his anxiety comes from. He's always known he fucked up awfully. When ES insists on him being a murderer, what makes him stutter and show fear is that same word. He's a murderer, and he can't cope with that, but he knows what he did no matter how much he denies it. From the very beginning all Futa has been is a coward; unable to accept that his actions killed someone until he gets some sense literally beat up on him.

Now, this is where I drift onto something even more people might disagree with, but personally I think it's intentional. The representation of his victim, in both MVs.

Because Futa saw no difference between her and other people him and his friendgroup judged, firstly, she's shown as a videogame monster. Her silhouette changes to a more human-like one when he realizes she died, but that's about it. It shows more of his attempt at dettaching from what he did, refusing to see things for what they are.

But then Backdraft came and totally changed that.

I have to bring up the other 2 monsters to make my point clearer. Like I said, in Jihen Joutou, Futa pictures all of his targets as monsters. In Backdraft, the first 2 remain the same style, but Killcheroy changes.

Unlike the other two, she's a completely different art style. Cartoony, cute, childish. Because Futa finally got to a point where he can't separate his actions from himself anymore, and had to recognize to have played part in her death, we see his victim for what she is—

A middle schooler.

Of course, her straight up appearing would've been enough to convey that, but the addition of making her character different (innocent, friendly, harmless) further shows how Futa does recognize that he hurt a child that ultimately wasn't doing anything wrong.

And, lastly, and this is entirely personal and where even More people might not agree: I just don't he's lying. I don't think he's trying to manipulate anyone into thinking he feels remorse just to get relief. I believe him when he says he knows what he did was wrong and he regrets doing it, that he wouldn't do it again. And I also understand (and agree) when he says ES, and us by extent, are doing the same.

People in the fandom like to act like he's crazy in the head (hyperbole) for saying that, that he is entirely saying it to guilt ES into forgiving him, and it honestly exhausts me. So like, hey, I'm not Futa, I'm part of the audience and I've voted. So let me say it: We are in fact the same.

He is not wrong in believing it. The MILGRAM system only abuses people under the excuse of giving justice and punishment to those that deserve it regardless of the degree of their crime— And I'm not talking about Kotoko. The psychological torture all 10 of these people are going through is not fair, not on the most forgivable one, nor the least. It is just an abusive system. This system killed people, some of which were teenagers, for having a troubled life. How is that any different from him?

Now I just said we are the same for the dramatism— Of course we are not the same on the basis that we are not actually hurting real people, but like, this fictional character doesn't have a conscience. By MILGRAM canon we really are just a bunch of people getting entertainment from 10 troubled people getting tortured. And as for ES, them continuing to partake on their role when they saw the extreme consequences it has just because they were told to do it is... Yeah, can you really blame any of the prisoners for thinking the guard is also in the wrong?

Ultimately, to conclude: I don't think Futa feels no remorse, nor do I think he only feels bad because he got consequences for it, and I don't understand this point of view. He's shown distress over his actions before backlash came his way, and right now he's at a point where he can't ignore that he fucked up and he will admit to it just fine. He is just simultaneously (and rightfully) upset that a fucked up system that does the same if not worse is the one that gets to decide whether he should be forgiven or not, because in all honesty, none of the prisoners deserve to be judged by MILGRAM.

Stafford Parents Okay but I am LOVING the idea that their parents put a lot of importance in action-- I definitely think it makes a lot of sense for both sisters!!! I am imagining since their mother died so young were actively involved in their father's royal affairs as soon as they were old enough? (especially considering Eilia was the heir which would technically make aria the spare?? which aria DEFINITELY ignored at all cost-- she def would spiral any time she considered that possibility.) i was wondering if perhaps aria, when she was old enough too, took up the mantle of being a patron/etc to these different things/groups/etc around Astaira which had originally been her mother's! i feel like the court/friends/whatever had tons of stories about her mother (because Aria would've been like..2 years old when she died I think?) that she'd heard over the years and she was aspiring to be as good as her mother! i dunno where this would really come from (mostly their dad i guess?) but i think they were trying to push the idea that being a queen/ruling class is about caring for the country and its people and their happiness/safety reflects back on a successful monarchy ruler. (also now wondering if they considered themselves/the queen/king "gods chosen" in the same way roderick does-- it seems like maybe that's not how the old religion would really see them but that's neither here nor there really...)

also knowing that their dad died pretty early on and while they definitely have more memories of HIM that their mother I could see where the whole lot of them have this very idealized versions of both their parents in their mind that is almost impossible to live up to in some way? that might be part of the reason why she (and maybe eilia too?) has this very strange idea that she isn't doing enough to try and fix the situation they're all in thanks to roderick!!

and because this is sort of a stream of consciousness word vomit rambling thing i'm ALSO wondering if even though they had fairly good familial relationships, maybe there was not really a forum to express emotions/concerns/etc within the family unit which is why now Aria/Eilia are in this weird sort of 'i don't want to be a burden/i am a burden/i don't want them to feel like a burden!' cycle because they aren't really that great at expressing their emotions to each other?? the whole like "we have to be strong for each other/our country" and a kind of guilt trip "things could be WAY WORSE" sort of thing

Old Religion/Guardians/Etc so to then pivot to Aria's abilities... i think she has had the ability for as long as she can remember! my idea was She talked a lot about seeing things/creatures/etc as a kid and I image her family probably thought she was just a kid who had imaginary friends, etc… but then as she got older and the stories continued/she could better articulate exactly what she was seeing they were like “ohh okay, that’s not just imagination.” Knowing there’s sort of two paths to follow when one has the ability to see/sense the guardians— being okay with it or kind of going crazy— she was probably kept a bit more secluded for a time so that if she did go the crazy route, she wasn’t out in public raving like a loon. I DO think pretty quickly it was concluded she was not going to lose her mind BUT then her abilities set up another set of concerns— even though the idea of seers wasn’t necessarily treated as a crime in Astaira it still would open her up to being a target from foreign entities (#roderick) along with potentially being seen as promoting the “old religion” despite the fact Astaira had a more open view on people’s religions! so the decision was made that it needed to remain a secret amongst the family (which really wasn’t that hard honestly). also now thinking this all maybe happened not long before their father died so she was kinda struggling with coming to terms with this ability/what it meant while they're all in mourning and her older sister is now the queen! (which obviously meant aria saw her less and while i think aria always knew that was going to happen it was still a shock/hard thing for her to deal with and i think aria tried to step up and be that person for siobhan but never felt like she actually was any good at it!) buuut anyway I think she had to figure out a lot of this guardian business out for herself along with trying to keep it under wraps so again it’s a part of her life she MAYBE put some unnecessary pressure on??

(also on the same note going off all that awesome info regarding witches lizzy posted, i was also thinking that aria never had an powers manifest which could be potential drama in the future for everyone if something happened that WOULD make some power manifest-- especially depending on who that might happen in front of!)

anyway this is, like i said, semi insane sounding rambling about things and i'm always open to changing thoughts on ANY of this but yes... it is here XD

Okie dokie!

So what initially started out as a joke character I made in relation to Pastra’s midwife voice kind of spiraled into a full blown AU, & I think these designs & concepts are too cool to keep away from the public eye.

Soooooo

Say hello to the DOAI Trickster AU!

Here’s the rundown:

Instead of using hallucinations & intimidation to claim their victims, Veldiguns instead have shapeshifted themselves to become more approachable to lure their intrigued victims to their demise.

Clyde & Winfrey are the most notorious of the Veldiguns, primarily targeting young adults using charm & flattery, often bringing their victims into the woods as to not get caught.

While one will most often pursue a target on their own, the other tends to linger nearby & keep an eye on their partner to keep them out of any potential danger.

The two deeply care about each other, their relationship being blatantly romantic, sometimes to a cheesy degree. Even so, these two should NOT be underminded strength-wise as they are just as strong & sometimes JUST as brutal as their canon counterparts. Human life means nothing to them, but they highly appreciate their customs & culture to the point where they even participate in some of those customs just for fun.

Klaus & Jack are QUITE different as they target young children, especially in any kind of birthday scenario. One common method Klaus uses to take down a target is by offering the chosen child a large “present”, luring them out of public view before allowing Jack to spring out of the box & chomp down on the victim.

Klaus treats Jack more like a tool rather than a partner, even taking apart Jack in his free time just because he finds the activity satisfying. He will rip Jack apart & fix him up again & again, mangling him & ruining his outer shell every time Klaus messes with him. Jack rarely ever objects, not wanting to anger the person that is able to feed him efficiently.

& finally…

Simon & the Flock are not necessarily two separate entities, at least not anymore. At some point, the two’s minds intertwined & consider themselves as one whole being. They prefer to be called the Reaper.

The Reaper, who cherishes human life, chooses to target much older humans who are about to die, wanting to give these people a comfortable death. The Reaper will often talk to the humans they take, wanting the people they target to accept their inevitable fate while they still can.

Of course, while they prefer to target the dying elderly, the Reaper will sometimes do the same for any human in other age ranges if that particular human does not have much time to live. Additionally, family pets are also taken by the Reaper, especially cherished pets that were loved & well taken care of. Of course, these two occurrences are extremely rare.

… & of course.

There’s Dr. Lankmann.

I don’t have much for him at the moment, but as of now, he is a monster hunter who is on a mission to eradicate EVERY SINGLE Veldigun he can, even the Reaper.

Everyone around him thinks he’s a mad man for believing these creatures even exist, but he doesn’t care. He’s GOING to hunt these FREAKS down & become the hero he so desperately desires to be.

No matter the cost.

… but I’m too lazy to design him at the moment, so uh… that’s all you get JWIWKEKEOEKW

AITA for refusing to join my dad's bootcamp?

I am adult, and F. When I was still a toddler, my dad (T) got thrown out of the house by the head of family (i don't actually think i'm related to the head of family? it's more like three or four large families living in the same place tbh) because he had killed a guy (intentionally) and disabled a girl for life (accidentally - well she wasn't the one he was targeting).

Anyway, I didn't know that when T came back at the head of his own group of families (he'd basically been chosen by another, already formed group, to take over their head of family who had died of sickness) and he asked that my twin brother (B, same age as me, at the time we were teens) and I join him because we were his children and it was only fair. Nothing was said about our mom being allowed to come too or anything? It was a bit fishy and people refused to let us go anyway.

But the thing is, ever since T had been banished, the whole group/family has been treating B and I like complete, utter garbage. The only person who treated us well was our mom. B even got an adult assigned to watching over him so he didn't because some psycho killer or something, just because he looks like our dad ig. Now, having an adult watching over each child as they are teens is a thing in the group i'm in, it's not shocking, but there's a relationship based on trust supposed to be born of this care, and here it was the contrary, so it sucked. PLUS! We didn't know why we were being treated like that, because no one told us what had happened to our dad! The adult who didn't trust B only took us aside when we were like 12 to explain to us that the guy was a monster. And he only did it because our dad had been trying to contact us and he wanted us to hear our family's side of the story before T's.

When I was around 15, I snuck away in the middle of the night to join my dad because i was sick of the bullying/harassment/mistrust. When it became public, B was put on the spot (he didn't know i'd left for that either) and refused to join me, which stung but you know. That's his choice and I respect him. It seems that everyone trusts him much more now that he's made a public display of loyalty.

When I came to live with T, I realized he was, actually, a complete POS and I shouldn't have come. But also, people in his group actually treated me well, so I didn't regret my choice. When T realized I didn't want to become a mini version of him, we became rather distant, until he left the group entirely (through no choice of his, may i add).

I learned later that, before I joined his group, he found a side chick with whom he had twins too, but she left before he knew she was pregnant. I learned that when she outed the boy twin (H, at the time a young adult, he's what... twleve years younger than us?) as T's son at a public gathering, like six months ago.

Since then, I've learned that T has been rekindling contact with B and H, when he took contact with me too. He basically tried to persuade all three of us (no sign of his other daughter, but she's in medschool so i suppose that's not the profile he was looking for) to join his bootcamp in which he'd teach us how to become "better versions of ourselves". Because he's an AH and because I've been learning all these years since he left that I shouldn't build my life around what others want me to be, I refused to join his bootcamp, and I advised B to refuse too (i'm not close enough from H to give him this kind of advice).

But now i'm thinking that, since he couldn't spend our childhoods with any of us, maybe he's just trying to keep in contact, you know, through teaching us and bonding with us, with sports and workout being the only things he knew how to do so that's what he focused on. Maybe I'm making a mistake, and seeing, as an adult, what he's like, would give me more perspective? What if i'm being as narrow minded as the bullies from my childhood? IDK what to do.

Nancy, this is a dumb question, but let's assume this is PR, and I believe it is. How did Chris and his team not see this backlash coming? And once his team threw his fans under the bus by calling them toxic, well this is what he gets.

Now, some of the GP think this is real, and I think they are losing interest because this relationship is giving them the ick.

Chris and his team need to have their “come to Jesus moment” soon if they want to salvage his career. The reaction he got from the Ghosted trailer was not good.

For some reason, they seem to be doubling down on the AB card. It's like they can't see or don't care she is not good for his image.

Look, here's the thing: take whatever you believe is the "true" nature of the relationship out of the equation. Just, leave that aside for a moment.

The "true" nature of the relationship at this point is completely moot, because since Pumpkingate this has now become a PR show. THIS IS NOW PR, BECAUSE IT HAS BECOME PR SINCE THEY DECIDED TO TREAT IT AS A SOURCE OF PUBLIC NARRATIVE. Once they decided to use it as a public image spinner, you have to focus on how this "relationship" is fulfilling that mandate.

So, is it fulfilling that mandate? The mandate of portraying what both PR teams attempted to sell, the "serious" "over a year" "never more in love" "private" couple of their publicly shared PR narrative? And, is that narrative, if being effectively conveyed, helping add value and positive attention to the participants? (Because, literally, that's all any PR is, a hopefully value-addictive narrative.)

Both questions answer no.

None of their attempts to craft the image have been successful in doing so. In fact, several have backfired and left many viewers with an oppositional view to the narrative. So, you have a failure to craft the PR correctly, in a way which resonates with intended target audience.

Then, you have the blowback of the PR failure: neither participant are seeing added value long-term from the PR campaign. Sure, she got a lift at the time of the WN season premiere/pap walk. But that was negated by her principle PR delivery vehicle (her IG) being shut down. And we saw her IG stats plummet after one day back. I do not think her Paris appearance will make an impact, but we'll see with the numbers tomorrow.

As for him - do I even need to summarize that? The consistent buying and cleaning show his team, at least, is aware that the plot has shifted against them, but they seem to have no good idea for how to get it back on course.

There's no point in arguing how people see this anymore, other than to say how they're seeing it is in no way benefiting either him nor her.

This whole thing is a big dud.

I think he gets a bit embarrassed in front of cameras still, because he's actually trying a lot and planning and thinking and researching (he said that privately he's a nerd and a loser kkkkkkkkk). with the queen of cups, he likes to show that he's in control of his emotions and sensitive to others' emotions, polite, nice and likeable, charming. with bosses, mingi likes to be a fun presence that reminds them of a problem child, I think he enjoys being taken care of and getting away easily when he actually has big trouble. ateez doesn't seem to have many celebrity friends (or any friends except for themselves) and it's basically what we see on camera. but he likes opportunities with successful people to exchange advice and learnings. in work events and ceremonies where he is around them, mingi likes to be calm, self composed and look successful, a quiet type of success. now, when around fans, he tries to be funny and quirky and look open minded and non judgmental, so they can feel comfortable with him. there's also the classic boyband fantasy, where every fan is special, the love of his life and he wants you desperately, only you! it doesn't seem he enjoys it, with the king of swords reversed + 8 of pentacles reversed, he thinks it's manipulative and gives him a bad reputation, it's easy money and disrespectful to himself, to the fans and the special people in his life. the other cards say he's often bored, apathetic or just sad when interacting one on one, but it's just how things have always been done and he doesn't have the power to change it alone. it seems that he wants to be more honest, but he can't, he said "it's hard to be proud of yourself when you do such putrid work".

mingi is really traditional, he likes being home and I don't see him going out at all, a homebody for sure. he is introspective and reevaluates his life and decisions, figuring out if they actually match with him on a real level. he's got a strong sense of right and wrong, he's quite lazy and overly dramatic. his faith plays a big part on him and his mentality, and he is thoughtful, he likes to learn from anything. he's such a sentimentalist, he romanticizes a lot, he's get very attached to things and people, and is probably the type to take many casual pictures and videos to watch his memories in the future. there is this one person mingi feels very close to, his true best friend, who he is very intensely emotionally connected to, he spends a lot of time with them, like a lot, from morning to night and then in his dreams, that's very sweet. he likes to be around this person because he feels grounded around them, and that's when his energy feels actually relaxed and comfortable. when around them, he is vulnerable, dedicated, attentive, detailed, easily accesses his shadow and works with them to fix it, this is a very safe energy and environment, I really like it, I'm happy he feels like that. it almost feels like therapy, but it's better and easier, he's a very healing presence in this energy, very comfortable and unbothered. he seems to still be obsessed with things from his childhood and love things that the target audience is children, it's lighthearted fun, he said.

I've been spending a lot of time on Den of Angels and Instagram. Got an email from Tumblr thanking me for another month of advertising-free payment, and I realized, "Oh, shit. Tumblr."

I am a cranky collector today (again). Sorry.

Things that irritate me (in no particular order):

Scalpers. Oh, sorry - resellers. I remember when "drop-shipping" first became a thing, and everyone and their neighbor paid for those stupid "learn to be a drop-shipper" online courses. I didn't pay it much mind, cuz I wasn't a doll collector back then. Now, I live in Scalper McScalperville. A doll will go on sale at my local store, and by the time I get there, it's gone, and 50 of them are on feeBay for double or triple the price. Message said scalper, and it's all, "Oh, I couldn't possibly let it go for less than list price." Bitch, you paid $10 for that doll, and you're a SAH-soccer-mom looking for some extra pocket money for your nose candy habit. Trying to buy a doll now is a click-war... unless you know the scalper's threshold, and you bid over it. For example, old R&D Susie dolls? Scalpers don't want to pay more than about $40 USD for her, cuz they re-list her for $75. So - bid $75, and you're more likely to get her for $40.

Related: Mattel. You are a multinational corporation that has been around since 1959. Fucking learn logistics, already. JFC.

On a less serious note: plastic. Dear dog, the amount of plastic (and foam and bubble wrap and...) these dolls are packaged in. I get it for playline dolls, but holy shit, for BJDs? You're already charging an arm and a leg for these dolls. Add $50 to the cost already and ship in a reusable cotton bag, FFS. Also, use plain cardboard boxes, please. I can't recycle them once you've put all that fancy foil decoration on there. When you own as many dolls as I do, keeping the boxes makes you look like a hardcore hoarder. If you're keeping the boxers to maintain the resale value, you aren't a collector anyway. You have inventory. Get a warehouse like every other business.

We old farts call that "passive-aggressive bullshit." Besides, that's not what the blog is being used for. It's being used by newer doll artists to shit on other newer doll artists. Econ 101, doll artist: if your doll isn't selling as well as you like, it's not cuz of competition. It's because not enough people like your doll. Work on your sculpting. Don't take it personally: Iplehouse is about as old-school as it gets, and their dolls are notoriously shitty posers. Impldoll has been around how long? And they just now released a new body that a lot of collectors like. It takes time and practice to make a very popular doll. So, invest the time, and practice. Don't bitch about how you can't afford to. I knew - personally knew - lawyers who worked days as attorneys and worked nights as stock workers at Target. If a lawyer can get a second job, so can you. Does it suck? Sure. But that's the world we live in, kids.

one time it got serious. don’t ask why but jeno had convinced yn to party with him. it was juyeons party, yn was happy and having fun! all her friends were there too. she stayed close to jeno all night long, they were being a young couple in love, dancing sexy and close to each other, being touchy, the kissing. for a change for a party, jeno’s lips found itself on her more so than on the glass of an alcoholic beverage or drugs !! but don’t get me wrong, he was high

anyways… here comes seoyeon. as jeno and yn look into each others eyes and hold each other close, seoyeon legit comes from nowhere and pours a glass of wine all over yns dress. it was red and it stained. funny thing is, they didn’t even know she was near or at the party. she was lurking and hiding all night long, staring at them but they were in their own worlds too involved with each other to care 😭

and wow… you’ve never seen jeno more angry. his first reaction was to check on his girl cus she was pretty startled and surprised! he kissed her, whispered something sweet to her and gave her his jacket immediately as the liquid was making her top very see through. his soft eyes turned brutal as he turned to her, my god… the anger was like no other i can’t describe it, he begins basically verbally belittling her and for good reason! and he’s about to go on and on but then suddenly heejin comes out of nowhere and throws a glass at seoyeon and then seoyeon throws hands but heejin punches her in the face:D

the thing is, jeno and heejin are literally the no 1 yn protectors cus even tho yn has grown in confidence, she still don’t defend herself! when people are mean to her she just sits there and takes it. she doesn’t fight back, she’s too scared to, her anxiety and her shock takes over. as heejin is punching her, yn is genuinely out of it, like she’s dissociated and still processing what’s happened :( that’s why jeno and heejin always fight for her :( especially those 2. if jeno is with yn and someone’s treated her unfairly, she’ll let them get away with it but he won’t!! he fights for his girl

and heejin… don’t get me started. she’s the best best friend you could ever ask for. i wish i could’ve made her a more primary character in the fic but i’m gonna write some extra pieces that include her ! so you can see how truly hot, fearless, giving and confident she is. she was watching the whole seoyeon situation from afar and buzzing with anger as the minutes went on. she just had to punch her. it angers her that seoyeon picks on yn because she knows that she won’t fight back and believes her to be an easy target, she vocalises that clearly. she says that she is more insecure than she claims yn to be. she says that her obbession with yn is incredibly sad because what is she doing wrong!? she’s at a party and having fun with her boyfriend? she genuinely offers to book seoyeon a therapy session lmfao

The Archer

The Archer was one of the first songs I wanted to take a deep dive into when I thought about analyzing Taylor’s work, so here we are. Here I’ll focus on the interpretation of the song as being about the closet, it’s not the only understanding there is, but it’s what makes it so so beautiful to me. Handle with care, we are about to get emotional.

And obviously, this is an analysis but I’m not in Taylor’s head, so even if I affirm something I can’t know for sure what she meant when she wrote those words.

Combat, I’m ready for combat I say I don’t want that, but what if I do?

I think this was written before she discussed the idea of coming out with anyone, or at least it reflects on that time. She knows that it will be hard, and she pretended for a long time that she doesn’t need it, that she’s okay in the closet, but she’s not. She wants to be her true self, and even if she pretends it doesn’t matter, she always comes back to the hope that she could someday come out.

She has changed the line in at least some live version of the songs (including the live from Paris), where she says “Combats” (plural), which I would understand as a reflect of her realization, since she failed to come out, that it’s not something that can be done once and be accepted forever (I’ll come back to this idea when I’ll talk about evermore, but the line “is there a line i could just go cross” is also about that in my opinion).

‘Cause cruelty wins in the movies

She saw people suffering from being out so many times, it led her to believe that she didn’t want to be, but she now realizes that she does and of course she is afraid.

She doesn’t know the right way to come out, and her anxiety makes her rethink every word she might have written about it.

Easy they come, easy they go

She knows how fast the public opinion can turn its back on her, and that’s what she fears if she comes out, that she would lose her fans, and that everything that she has worked for would be lost because of who she is.

I jump from the train, I ride off alone

Trains have often symbolized love in Taylor’s music, and more specifically, she almost exclusively uses them to signify relationships that don’t work out (Sad Beautiful Tragic, New Romantics, willow, champagne problems…), which leads me to believe that she’s talking about leaving her (ex-)girlfriends to keep her career safe.

I never grew up, it's getting so old

She might have had this debate for long, and feel like she isn’t evolving on the matter. It might also be about the way some people consider the closet to be a temporary state, that changes as soon as you have the ability to be out, which could make her feel like she is perpetually stagnating and can't fully grow.

Help me hold onto you

This can be understood as being directed both to her lover or her public, but anyway, she fears people will leave her when they learn about her queerness.

(Btw, this would be my answer to the way some people react by saying “it doesn’t matter if she’s queer”, if we’re right about that, it does matter a whole lot to her and she seems so afraid of the way we all would react, that saying we see her and that we’re still here does actually matter.)

She is the archer, the one in control, she is perpetually trying to get people to listen to her music, and she’s good at it, she’s a mastermind. But she’s also the fox in I Know Places, her private life is always hunted and if she ever came out, she would be the target of bigots who would see her as a threat. She made herself both the archer and the prey by choosing this career.

Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?

She knows that she has fans, that people love her, that she is (and already was when the song came out) one of (if not the) most influential artists of her generation. But what would last if she lived her truth? What would happen once she shared her most dangerous secret?

Dark side, I search for your dark side But what if I'm alright, right, right, right here?

She’s always waiting for the other shoe to drop, to find out that her public will leave her, but she thinks that she’s the one who would lead us to the dark side. By lying about herself, I think she might feel like she’s the dark side of her relationship with her fans.

And I cut off my nose just to spite my face Then I hate my reflection for years and years

She changes the way she appears, and then hates herself for it. She hates that she is stuck in the closet and the way everyone perceive her because of it.

I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost The room is on fire, invisible smoke

She is panicking but no one sees it, no one understands what she feels, and no one believes that the danger is here because no one can feel it like she does.

And all of my heroes die all alone

This could be a reference to the way gay people were often believed to be single when they died because no one understood who they really were, but it could also be about the way so many queer historical figures had tragic endings.

She is so used to people not seeing her, not listening to her, that she feels like she doesn’t even see herself anymore. Maybe she sometimes catch herself forgetting who the real her is, lost behind the public figure.

She has separated herself in so many parts between her public and private life, that no one would be able to see her as a whole, even herself, she is lost between too many masks.

‘Cause all of my enemies started out friends

She is making enemies out of her friends because she is never truly honest, and therefore they can’t “put her together again” since they don’t know her whole truth.

Even through the anxiety, she still wants to do it, she finds it in herself to overcome the fear and believe in her fans and her loved ones. She showed a part of her mind, she shared this anxiety, but what comes out of it is that she can’t stay in the closet. This is what makes this song so tragic, if I'm interpreting it right; she wanted to come out so badly, but she wasn’t able to, and now all that is left from that time is her anxiety.

At first you thought that it was a joke, even though you aren’t bullied in middle school or in high school due to you being good at blending in, you have seen bullying face to face and one of those are people giving the targets love letters as a joke to humiliate them in front of their friends, so you just either ignore it or put it in the trash.

You thought that those things would stop since it was just a way to get into you but it still keep coming

Jewelries, Luxury Clothing and even those Fancy wrist watches that you could only see celebrities and CEOs wear in public, those are the few examples that the mysterious admirer has sent to you

It was flattering at first and even romantic, with having no one to care and love for you at a young age, you quickly got attached to the mysterious person who’s sending you these gifts

Every time you’ve received those flower bouquets and those sappy romantic love letters,it felt like there’s butterflies in your stomach, it feels so good to be noticed by someone, to feel wanted by that person.

But all good things must come to an end as the letters started to get much more intimate and creepy, and the gifts started to get personal and excessive, as if he’s stalking you 24/7

That person would write to you letters about your day, the whole details of it, they even sent pictures of you inside of your home or in public areas

The romantic letters are now turned sour, an example would be that the letter they’ve sent about you talking to one of your classmates about a certain topic in your class that you couldn’t understand, saying that you shouldn’t talk to other guys and if you have a problem, just write back to them

And those were one of the mild ones as they kept sending letters upon letters in your mailbox, although you burned them all. Those letters are still able to get to you by either your phone, email or any social media accounts that you have, even the once that you used anonymously

You tried to file complaint to the police about your stalker but they just ignore it, saying that they would look in that case but its been weeks, and there’s still nothing done about your stalker

You’ve finally had enough of everything that has happened to you, violation of privacy, illegal trespassing, stalking both in real life and online. It's all too much for you to handle

So you’ve decided to buy a burner phone and call your parents in another country, saying that you would just live with them and enter a local university

You’ve drop out of university and quickly booked a flight to where you parents are working in

Just as you were about to leave your home with your cats and suitcases, you heard a loud knocking on the door

Annoyed, you quickly walked to the door to open it, revealing a tall man with a black hair, wearing a black overcoat. There’s a notable feature on his face, which is a scar that goes through his left eye

Just as when you are about to ask what he is doing in your home, he quickly puts a cloth in your mouth and tightly restrain you so you couldn't escape

You tried to get out of his hold, thrashing and trying to kick his groin but the chemicals in that cloth started to take effects on you, making you dizzy and weak

Just as you are about to lose consciousness, you felt him kissing your neck and then whisper into your ear, his last words to you before you black out should’ve been comforting but instead scared you to the core

Cancel Culture Is Real - Andrew Doyle

"Cancel culture doesn't exist!" is a mantra we often hear from its most obstinate practitioners.

In October 2022, the comedian and BBC presenter Graeme Norton suggested that a better term for cancel culture would be "accountability." But is it really fair to harass, defame and ruin people's lives simply for expressing commonly held opinions? What exactly are they being held accountable for? A much better synonym for cancel culture was coined by the singer Nick Cave. He said it was "mercy's antithesis."

Given that the very existence of cancel culture is so often denied, I thought I'd take this opportunity to outline precisely what is meant by cancel culture, and why it matters so much for those of us who still care about liberal values.

But let's begin with that thorny question of definitions. Now, most of us understand what cancel culture means. But perhaps it might be more instructive to consider what it isn't.

If someone criticizes you for something you've said or done, that's not cancel culture, that's free speech. If someone blocks you on social media, that's not cancel culture; someone has just decided you're not worth listening to and is exercising his or her freedom to ignore you. If you've not been invited to speak at a certain event, that's not cancel culture either; no one's entitled to a platform.

No, what cancel culture actually means is a form of public shaming or harassment, often for relatively minor mistakes or unfashionable opinions. It's the difference between criticizing someone for something they've said or done, or systematically attempting to see their reputation and livelihood obliterated. Cancel culture is not criticism, it's denunciation. it's contacting employers and demanding that people are fired because you don't agree with what they've said. It's spreading lies about them online so their future work prospects are diminished. In other words it's a hugely disproportionate and vindictive form of revenge, dressed up in the guise of virtue.

Here's a way to think about it: let's say a colleague has attempted a joke via email and maybe you feel a bit offended by it. Do you have a conversation with them in private and say, "look I think that was a bit misjudged, but I know that wasn't the intention so let's just move on and go for a pint." Or do you screenshot the offending email, post it online, invite all your followers to pile on to the person who wrote it, and denounce them publicly and then demand that the employer fires them for hateful conduct?

Now if you're opting for the latter, I've got some bad news for you. You you're not the good guy here.

"But free speech has consequences," the cancel culture skeptics cry. Well look, I'm inclined to agree. If a person says something stupid or offensive, they can expect criticism, ridicule, counterarguments, even protest. But if the consequences of free speech are that someone becomes the target of a campaign of public shaming and personal ruination, or worse still, that they're arrested for so-called "hate speech," then that's surely unjustifiable.

A common misconception is that cancel culture is simply a matter of holding the powerful to account. The failure of activists to cancel JK Rowling is often cited as evidence that cancel culture is a myth. But as one of the most successful authors of all time, Rowling cannot be cancelled, much to the irritation of those who sender abuse and threats on a daily basis. The vast majority of targets are those with limited means, who don't have the public profile or financial resources to protect themselves from such attacks. This is why the Free Speech Union has been invaluable, offering support to so many people who found themselves at the center of witch hunts.

Perhaps the most sinister aspect of cancel culture is that it has successfully generated a climate of fear, in which many are afraid to express even their most cherished convictions. Once a few high-profile individuals have been cancelled, this can be sufficient to discourage others from speaking out. The relentless and cruel attacks on JK Rowling are driven not by any serious belief that she'll suddenly become impoverished and unemployable. But rather by the desire to send a message to others who share her point of view. After all, who would want to be on the receiving end of such malicious and continual harassment.

And so, the full impact of cancel culture is pretty difficult to quantify. Like "no platforming," which is the practice carried out by universities of denying platforms to individuals with controversial views, most of the targets of cancel culture are pre-emptive. Just as speakers with heterodox views will never know that they've been deprived of an opportunity to speak on campus, many of us will have been passed over for promotions, or not hired at all, simply for the opinions we've expressed in conversation or on social media. We will never know who has been cancelled, because we can only ever be aware of those handful of instances that have been publicized.

So, while the press will report on pop singer Róisín Murphy's cancelled shows, a consequence of her entirely reasonable comments about the dangers of puberty blockers, the supermarket employee who loses his job for an offensive joke on Twitter is unlikely to garner the same attention.

For all that, there have been numerous examples of cancellations that have made the national news. And the evidence of cancel culture is there for anyone who wishes to see it. And although these examples represent a fraction of the problem, they should be sufficient to disabuse those who cling to the comforting misapprehension that cancel culture is just a fabrication of right- wingers. Not least because so many of its victims have been on the left.

And so, to counter the pervasive and false narrative that cancel culture doesn't exist, I thought it might be helpful to provide an overview of just some of its victims. And now, needless to say, this list is by no means exhaustive.

So, in June 2015, the Nobel prizewinning biochemist Tim Hunt was forced to resign from his honorary position at University College London after a journalist misrepresented jokes he'd made at a conference in Seoul in South Korea.

In August 2019, school teacher Christian Webb lost his job when it emerged that he'd been performing viral comedy rap videos under the pseudonym MC Devo in the mid 2000s.

In December 2021, choreographer Rosie Kay was compelled to resign from her own dance company after investigation processes began because she expressed her gender-critical views at a gathering with dancers in her own home. And although she had cooked them a meal and invited the company to her house, some of those present took it upon themselves to report her to the board.

In December 2018, tax expert Maya Forstater lost her job for saying that women are female and human beings cannot change sex. The decision of the tribunal was initially upheld, so she was forced to take the case to the High Court, which eventually ruled that gender-critical beliefs are protected by law.

The comedy writer Graham Linehan has been unable to work in the comedy industry for six years due to his gender-critical beliefs. His musical adaptation of his hit sitcom "Father Ted" has been halted by the rights owners, Hat Trick Productions, who had offered Linehan a substantial sum of money to have his name removed from the project.

In 2018, barrister Allison Bailey, a lesbian with a long history of gay activism, raised concerns about her chamber's decision to join Stonewall's "Diversity Champions" program due to its uncritical stance on gender self-identification. For raising these concerns, she was labeled as "transphobic" by Garden Court Chambers, who publicly announced that Bailey was under investigation. Bailey later won a court case for discrimination.

In 2018, the children's author Rachel Rooney published a book called "My Body is Me," which challenged sexist stereotypes and promoted a positive self-image for children. It was branded as "transphobic" and Rooney was subjected to a campaign of harassment by figures in the publishing industry. Some bookshops capitulated to activists and stopped stalking her work, and her publisher told her to stop expressing her opinions on the subject of gender.

In June 2023, it was reported that Sibyl Ruth, an editor at Cornerstones literary consultancy, was dropped because of her gender-critical views. Following an employment tribunal she received an apology and substantial damages.

In October 2023, Newcastle United fan Lindsay Smith was banned from the football club stadium for three seasons for her belief that sex is immutable, and that men shouldn't have access to women's changing rooms or compete in women's sports. In addition to her ban, she was investigated by a secret unit at the Premier League, who created a dossier on what they described as their "target." They attempted to find a home address, they assessed photographs from her social media accounts, and they even downloaded images in which Smith could be seen walking a dog.

Dr. Neil Thin experienced what he described as a devastating couple of years when he was falsely accused of racism by student activists. Thin is a senior lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, and he had criticized a conference called "Resisting Whiteness" because it offered racially segregated spaces. He also objected to the renaming of the David Hume Tower as 40 George Square. It had been renamed on the grounds that Hume had written some passages in an essay in 1753 that would today be deemed offensive. Thin stepped back from teaching while an investigation was underway and was eventually exonerated in September 2021.

Also in 2021, the actor James Dreyfus was dropped from the audio range of Doctor Who stories for signing a letter to Stonewall calling for an open and respectful debate on the subject of gender identity ideology and its impact on the rights of women and gay people. The company not only dropped him but erased his episodes from a compilation in which he was meant to be featured.

In July 2020, the children's author Gillian Philip was dropped by her publisher for tweeting in support of JK Rowling. She's since retrained as a trucker and has written that the haulage industry is far more supportive and inclusive, and a lot less misogynistic, than the world of children's writing.

Criminology Professor Jo Phoenix was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after a campaign of harassment by colleagues after she co-founded a gender-critical research network. In early 2024, she won her constructive dismissal case against the Open University.

In November 2021, social worker Rachel Meade was sanctioned by her employer Social Work England because of gender-critical posts she had shared and liked on Facebook. This led to her being suspended on charges of gross misconduct by Westminster City Council. Meade later won her claim for discrimination against her employer and the judge ruled that the disciplinary procedure amounted to harassment.

In June 2020, Nick Buckley, the founder of charity organization Mancunian Way, was ousted for criticizing the radical politics of the Black Lives Matter movement, most notably its calls to defund the police and abolish capitalism.

In August 2020, Sasha White, an assistant at the Tobias Literary Agency in New York, was fired after a campaign by trans activists who took offense at statements posted on her Twitter account expressing her view that gender neutral pronouns were unhelpful to the feminist cause.

In January 2020, veteran television presenter Alastair Stewart was forced to resign after tweeting a quotation from Shakespeare which included the phrase, "an angry ape." This was misinterpreted as racist because he was replying to a black Twitter, user even though it was a phrase he had used previously in conversation with white people.

In April 2019, philosopher Roger Scrutin was sacked as housing adviser to the Conservative government as part of the "Building Better, Building Beautiful" commission. And this was after a journalist at the New Statesman doctored his statement in an interview in order to make them appear racist.

In June 2019, Asda Supermarket worker Brian Leech was fired after sharing a video online by the comedian Billy Connelly which mocked Islamic suicide bombers, even though the source of the offending excerpt was from a DVD sold by the company that employed him. He was later reinstated following an outcry.

In June 2019, BBC Books removed the writer Gareth Roberts from a Doctor Who short story anthology because he expressed his view that the trans activist movement reinforces outdated gender stereotypes.

In June 2021, the textile artist Jess de Wahls had her artwork removed from sale in the Royal Academy gift shop, having already been driven out of her hairdressing salon in the Soho theater. Simply for her gender-critical opinions. She was bombarded on Twitter with vitriolic messages and calls for her to commit suicide.

In June 2021, it was reported that the Reverend Dr Bernard Randall, a school chaplain at Trent College in Derbyshire had been reported to Prevent, that's the government's anti-terrorism program, and this was because he delivered a sermon on why it was reasonable to challenge ideological viewpoints. And this was in response to a training session that he'd been obliged to attend in which school staff were told to chant "smash heteronormativity."

In June 2021, the cricketer Ollie Robinson was banned from playing for eight months due to offensive tweets that he posted as a teenager. In addition to the ban from the Cricket Discipline Commission, he was fined £3,200 and was compelled to participate in anti-discrimination training.

In June 2021, it was reported that law student Lisa Keogh had been investigated by authorities at Abertay University in Scotland for saying that "women have vaginas." Although she was cleared, she described the two-month investigation as needlessly cruel given that it coincided with her final examination period.

In October 2021, the philosopher Kathleen Stock resigned from the University of Sussex following a campaign of abuse and harassment from student activists who claimed that her very presence excludes and endangers trans people.

Ann Henderson, rector of Edinburg University until February 2021, was falsely smeared by activists as "transphobic" and antisemitic and not fit to hold office simply for tweeting about a meeting at the House of Commons on proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. She experienced a vicious campaign in which the University refused to tackle her abusers.

So that's just a sample of some of the victims of cancel culture.

And if it's true that cancel culture isn't real, it's got a hell of a lot of casualties.

They know it's real, because they think it's good.
