It's after midnight, so it's officially Thursday and I can post this now!

It's time for the Bokumono Reverse Big Bang y'all!

Operation: Save the Magic Gen; 18k; Fritz, Annie, Raeger, Mistel, and Cast When they discover that Fritz still believes in Santa Claus, Annie and Raeger take it upon themselves to to give him a magical Christmas. Mistel overhears their plans and decides to become a Problem On Purpose. The opposing teams race towards their Christmas Eve deadline, vying to make the most magical Christmas and to stop Christmas from coming.

I had the privilege or getting paired up with @pansy-picnics this time around, working off her idea and art to create this story.

It might just be a little off season, but I'm of the opinion that a holiday story can be appreciated at any time of the year if you're in the mood for one. And I had an absolute blast writing this piece!

I write so much angst normally I don't often get to let loose and just let characters have fun and be silly. But hoo boy I got to with this one! I think it's fair to say that everybody's brain cells are all hibernating for the winter, but that's okay. They have Christmas spirit filling in for the brain cells.

Hi Penny! I hope you’re well— I hope it’s okay if I gush for a bit!

So, my main F/O is Raeger from Story of Seasons. We celebrated our one year anniversary since getting married recently (April 24th), and I just… I still get shy around him and I love him with all my heart. I love him so so so much. He made me able to smile when the world around me seemed so dark when I met him.

I’m over the moon to be his wife, and I just love him so so much. I’m disabled so I can’t drive places, but I imagine Raeger would take me wherever I wanted in a heartbeat.

I really hope I make him as happy as he makes me. That’s all I want. He’s had it rough too and I’m so glad we could be alive in the same time together, that we met, and now still very happily married and in love even after a year.

🥕(Carrot) - Do you prefer having a protagonist with a fixed design - eg. Pete, Claire etc - or a customisable protagonist?

I like the fixed designs, even if there's certain protag designs I'm meh on. I'm not a fan of customization since I think of the protag as their own character and not a representation of myself, so for me, the more fixed their design, the better. (Although I do like dressing them up in different outfits lol.)

🍒 (Cherries) - Rival marriages - for or against? And would you want them to return in future titles?

i don't inherently hate the concept of rival marriages but I feel like in most of the games they're poorly executed/written (there are some I just... oof). Like for the most part they seem rather pointless, since in most games the rival pairs either don't actually get together or if they do, they don't have kids, which... ??? It breaks the immersion for me when the farmer/spouse is the only one with a kid, and so I do think in that sense, Animal Parade and IoH got the rival marriages right, at least in a mechanics sense.

For as much as RF2 is lacking, (Which, okay not HM per se but adjacent) I do like that they have the rival marriages/kids as a key part of the plot (even tho they don't do any actual events lmao) and it'd be nice to see future games implement this just in a more fleshed out way.

So to answer the question, I don't dislike the rival marriages so much as I dislike how they're presented in most of the games.

🍐(Pear) - Favourite rival pairing (Canon or non-canon)?

Okay I'm going to assume "canon" also refers to the implied pairings in some of the newer games that don't feature actual rival marriages. That being said I like so many ships I have to break this up and do a top 5 for canon and top 5 for non-canon lol. And these are just what have the worms wriggling atm. Other than the #1's (both of which drive me insane and make me want to climb the walls) this is in no particular order.

Thieving Winter

Summary: The winter has taken too much out of Raeger. He won’t let it take Annie too.

Rating: T - Suitable for teens, 13 years and older, with some violence, minor coarse language, and minor suggestive adult themes.

Notes: I should be writing about the efforts in the reconstitution of civil service bodies at the province of Western Cape, but I got lost in fanfiction. Sue me.

There are few things I hate more than the winter.

My father left us at winter. The gas company cut our heating one winter. Mother moved us to Oak Tree Town in the winter. My grandfather passed away during winter. There is no produce, no tourists, so I have to close down the restaurant and live off my wife’s income.

When I was younger and more naïve, I was told that the goddess rests over this time, which is why life seems to freeze under the heavy ice. While I am not religious anymore, I still find it an elegant anecdote. In the winter, we are out on our own, braving the cold alone. The goddess is not going to help us, and so every tragedy is allowed to happen.

Now, the winter is about to take something else from me.

It was a bitterly cold winter evening, and the snow was falling heavily. Annie, my wife, had gone out to check on the animals in our farm. The property was not that large, she argued, she knew her way around it with her eyes so she could manage to get there and back in safety. It was getting late, though, the sun has already set, and she had not returned yet.

I paced back and forth in our cozy farmhouse, growing increasingly worried as the minutes ticked by. I tried calling her cell phone, but there was no answer. The reception was terrible even in the better of days, so I tried to encourage myself. I cooked in the kitchen, hoping to leave everything prepared for when she came back, and to ease my nerves. I petted our cat anxiously. I even went out to look for her myself, but the snow was coming down so hard that I could barely see a few feet in front of me.

I knew I had to wait for her to come back on her own. If I did anything else, it is more likely that I end up lost myself. I am not a farmer, I am a cook, and I could not hope to find my way out there like my wife could.

As I sat by the fire again, my mind wandered to all the things that could have gone wrong, a beaten path I am growing weary of threading. Annie was a tough woman, but the snowdrifts could be treacherous, and the cold could be deadly. I tried to distract myself with some more busy work, but I found myself glancing at the clock every few minutes.

Hours passed, and the snow showed no signs of stopping. It is now pitch black outside the windows, and I know she did not take a flashlight with her. I was getting more and more anxious with each passing moment. Finally, I heard a knock at the door.

My heart leapt with relief as I rushed to open it, but it was not Annie standing on the other side. It was our neighbor, Fritz.

“Fritz? What the hell are you doing here?” I ask harshly, partially because he is not whom I was expecting, and partly because he also should not be out and about in the snow.

“Raeger! Goddess, Raeger, it’s terrible!” He bemoaned, his breath fogging up in the frigid air.

Horror began pooling on the mouth of my stomach. “What’s horrible? Spit it out already!”

"It’s Annie!” The other farmer sniffled. “I saw her horse stuck in a snowdrift a few ways down the road. I tried to dig her out, but it's no use. We need to get some help!"

I felt a surge of panic as I grabbed my coat, a shovel and followed Fritz outside. We made our way through the snowdrifts, much too slowly for my tastes. I could only hear the other man, pointing me out to the right direction. Sure enough, after some walk against the window, there was the horse, half-buried in the snow, neighing for help.

I knew we had to act fast. We couldn't leave Annie out in the cold for much longer. I gave Fritz the shovel.

“Dig the horse out and take it to the stable. I’ll take care of Annie.” I instructed him, leaving no room for arguing.

The copper-haired farmer tried anyways. “But…!”

“Now, Fritz!” I shout back at him, over the wind.

I drop to my knees and begin to dig with my own hands, desperately hoping to find my wife alive. I continued for what felt like hours, calling out her name into the darkness. The snow was up to our knees, and the wind was howling. It was the kind of weather that could kill even the strongest person. My heart was pounding in my chest, and I could feel the fear rising inside me.

Finally, I could reach her coat and pull her up again. She was cold, too cold, and had a bruise on her head. She probably fell from the saddle in the wind.

Fritz had already left with the horse, but I did not even notice it. He would likely spend the night on the stable, where it was warm, so I try to make sure that I check on him in the morning. I put my wife’s limp body over my shoulder and run back through the path we threaded in the snow.

The lights on our farmhouse have never looked so beautiful to me.

I let her down on the bed and cover her naked, dried-up body with as many covers and coats I could find laying around. I turn up the thermostat and put a bag of hot water under her neck. It was only when she was covered in an immense cocoon of fabrics that I dare to check her heartbeat.

I place my ear against her chest. It was beating. Annie was alive.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” I devotionally whispered to no-one in particular.

She is going to be alright. She is going to survive. I must only be patient and keep her warm, and everything is going to be alright.

I take off my own clothes and lay down next to her. Bodily heat is supposed to help in these situations. I wrap my arms around her as tightly as possible, feeling her temperature rise slowly through the night.

Soon, I find myself doing something I had not done in a long while. I pray to the goddess, I ask for her blessings, for the health of my wife, for allowing me to stay with her, just a little while longer.

Between my newly-found faith and the slow beating of the heart of the woman I loved more than life itself, I fell asleep.

The morning was still cold, but the sunshine that hit my face and caused me to wake up was proof that the storm has subsided.

Annie looked down at me with a smile.

“Hey.” She said, simply.

I waste no time in hugging her again. “Goddess, I thought I had lost you… I thought…”

“I’m sorry, Raeger. I’m sorry.” She said, her voice barely above a whisper. "All I could think about in the snow is that I was going to put you in danger. I knew you'd come, and you did. You saved me. I’m so sorry."

I was angry, I was furious, I wanted to shout at her so she would never be so careless again, but having her in my arms, I forgot all about it. She is alive, and that is all that matters right now. It was a close call, but we had made it.

“I love you, Annie. I love you. Never leave like this again. Please.” I said, almost sobbing.

Later, as I served breakfast to Annie at her sickbed, after I sent Fritz home with my thanks and plenty of food, I could not help but wonder what would have happened if we had not found her in time.

It was a sobering thought, but it is a necessary one. I knew that we had to be prepared for anything. We had to be tough. Yet, as I looked into my wife’s eyes, I knew that there was nothing more precious in the world. I will protect it, for as long as I live.

Winter will come again, but it will never take something away from me again.
