Epilogue:
Team Soulfire genuinely is first in forever platonic dynamic I got obsessed with. I love a lot of them, but Blue Team… They are so special to me, I can’t explain it properly.
I loved each of them. Fact: Blue (before Green being dissolved) is the only team that had every single one of the members to log in AT LEAST once. Which is crazy, considering all the logging in problems we had some days. But it was awesome. Better than I could ever imagine.
Everything that they built together makes me smile even from thinking about it. The Old Base that constantly has been in use throughout the whole time no matter what. The New Base… The New Base genuinely feels like home. It’s been so cosy and pretty and safe. Nobody has found it at the end! It held it purpose til the last moment.
Trousers. Coco. Caramel. Bertie. Rupert. Scoob. Luffy. All the Little Buddies that supported Blue throughout the Purgatory. I will love you forever.
The discovery of the potential that Tubbo and Bad hold as a duo. Prime, I am PRAYING that Bad and Dapper are okay. I love them to death AND i need Tubbo spend more time with Dapper, I think they would be hilarious as a duo. Plus I just enjoy Tubbo and Bad’s interactions. Throughout the years of being on same SMPs and in the same events it was the first time they got to properly play with each other, and it’s amazing.
TINA!!! Omg, q!Tina, you will always be a legend. Man, I think she might share her the place of my second favorite resident with Bad now (first is Tubbo, obviously). I will definitely try to keep up with her character and lore further. She is amazing.
I can honestly talk about each and one of the members. I maybe will at some point. Right now I am genuinely in tears from all the emotional roller coaster it was. I don’t know how to move on, honestly. I hope people will keep making content with Team Soulfire, even if it’s over. I know I will at least make some web weaves. and check the tag religiously.
On that note, oh my god, thank you SO MUCH to everyone for this journey. We had a lot of rough moments with the toxicity, but overall I will not remember that when I think of those days, I will remember how many amazing people I got to properly interact with on the base of our cubitos being stuck together under the blue flag.
Genuinely, especially it goes to BBH Mains. Guys, no matter what happens between our cubitos further, it was an honor to stand by your side, and I hope you know I adore your guy and you all. And it makes me so happy to see so many positive reactions and posts about Tubbo and his cubito!
This was draining emotionally, but this also was amazing. I think I am still somewhat riding the high of the Amazing Victory of Blue That One Day lmao.
We will see how it goes.

Heya! Welcome to our creepy studio filled with oddities!
Tumblr media
Hi and good mourning, it’s me Aj! I’m also referred to as ShadowAj, Shady and RealShadyGhost. I’m a spooky yet silly ghost who draws and such. Here, you’ll mainly see me post fan art of my favorite series, commissions, and OC content (scroll down for more info on this!), as well as memes probably. Most of the drawings I post here will be 2D digital art, but occasionally I may post 2D traditional. I hope you enjoy your visit here!
(Small content warning, although I won’t post anything NSFW, I may post drawings with blood and/or light gore, body horror, and disturbing imagery, so beware.)
Things I Enjoy!

Original Content!
As I said before, I’ll be posting drawings of OCs, mainly from the webcomic series I’m working on titled ‘Shadow Realm’. I do have other original series and ideas as well, so here’s a little info…
Shadow Realm
Tumblr media
Shadow Realm is a 4-part action horror urban fantasy series starring Sophia Alvarado, a Cuban teenage girl who lives in Miami who one day ends up in a different and strange world from our own, and ends up encountering ghosts and gaining powers of electricity. With her occult and coffee-obsessed friend Violet Bellerose and a friendly ghost she meets on the other side dubbed Shady, they encounter different ghosts and supernatural occurrences all across Miami. There’s a lot more to it, but that’s the basic gist of it for now. (It gets very complicated from part 2 onward…)
Kendall Convenience
A small game project that has the player take the role of one Katrina Diaz, a convenience store worker in Miami who works the graveyard shift. This takes place in the same universe as Shadow Realm.
Mystères de Lenoir
Tumblr media
Mysteres de Lenoir is a series that follows the protagonist, Stella Auclair, a fresh detective who takes place in steampunk and gothic France during the Belle Époque era. Stella works with André Dupin, at the Dupin Detective Agency, and they solve a series of mysteries, most of which are murder cases.
I have two other series, but those are a secret for now… I will say though that one of them is a western, and the other is a single volume (One-Shot) comic.
Closing thoughts
Tumblr media
If you read through all that wow good job you’re super cool and spooky methinks perchance.
Oh yeah, you can find me on other platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Pixiv, and Twitch

another thing, i speak English and i can understand Spanish (I'm hispanic and i still can't speak this language it's embarrassing i know )
(also i may reupload this post in the future to add custom graphics, update interests, etc.)

alton variants 1/?
i haven’t told anyone on here about my alton towers lore...but i’m about to. in summary, this is the guy who runs the parks, and there are a bunch of different versions of himself he has for the different rides....
(a lot of just general lore below the cut, if ye be curious)
ok. still here? yay. buckle up.
for context, you’re going to need to know what the other side is. So, imagine there was an identical version of our world just next to ours, that was hidden from us by an invisible wall, but if you managed to break through it, you would find an earth not restricted by rules of physics, or reality. A world, not backwards, per-say, but every way other than right. That is the other side, the wrong side, and it is parallel entirely to our world. The right side. Anything that happens there, happens here, just by our rules. Anything that happens here, happens there, but in an indefinitely more absurd way.
a long-ish time ago, long before Alton Towers was the thrilling theme park, and instead just the estate of an Earl with a (in)famously long name, "Sir Alton Talbot-Eastmanvanshire IV." Sir Alton was an eccentric, rich beyond imagination, and well known in the community for being egotistical, and avaricious. Because of course he was. Though reportedly very intelligent, you probably wouldn't have known that if you'd talked to him. Alton was always known for living in his own world, frequently throwing parties with other well-to-do folk and just generally acting disconnected from the rest of the world.
Though Sir Alton would most certainly not be forgotten due to his less than amiable reputation, it's not why he's most well-known around where his estate once stood. Surely you’ve all heard of the legend of Hex. See, the legend goes that one day the Earl went out riding in to town, and passed by an old woman on the way back, who asked simply for any kindness that could be given. When he turned her down, as most of his kind tend to do, she proclaimed that the tree in the estate’s garden had been cursed by his blackened heart. The next time a branch fell from the tree, one member of his family would die. At first, Alton didn’t believe the old woman. However, after a member of his family died in total synchronicity with the falling of one of the branches of that infamous tree, Alton was more than convinced of the old woman’s curse.
Driven to attempt to break the curse himself, to understand what had wrought this curse upon him, Alton took the fallen branch to a secluded area deep within the towers, and preformed every experiment he could possibly imagine to crack the code. After two weeks spent entirely hidden away from the world, the Earl’s family grew increasingly distressed at his absence, so you can only imagine their shock when he disappeared entirely.
They would never find Alton, or what had caused his disappearance, and it wasn’t long before he was presumed dead, the mystique behind it eternally clinging to the mystery of the estate. However, Alton had, indeed, cracked the code, as his experiments had weakened the border between the right and wrong side, and ultimately tore them open and taken him. Faced with an utterly backwards version of his reality, Alton’s sanity was not long for this world, and he quickly succumbed to the madness of it all. This would turn out to have many benefits, as it allowed Alton to take up his estate as its owner, and become a miniature god, of sorts. Alton remained eternally trapped on the other side, exclusively on the land that, on the right side, rightfully belonged to him. Now, he’s managed to pull a few strings, and pull a few people from the right side into his domain, to entertain him, to give him company in this lonely little space of abstract nonsense. As the population in Alton Towers slowly grows, the barrier between right and wrong grows weaker, and strange structures and people begin to appear on our side. Of course, to us, they’re just roller-coasters and rides and whatever. Sir Alton is always looking for more permanent residents in his domain, though, so be careful next time you visit his estate........ or something.
THATS ENOUGH RAMBLING. ill tell you all more the next time i finish some more variants. hopefully then, i can actually tell you about how the variants work. fun stuff. ive been sitting on these ideas for a really long time i just havent had the balls to tell anyone. so yaes. now you know

(But I will not. That's way too overprotective. I suppose I'm still on edge from the baffling experiences that occurred yesterday.)
(Psychic phenomena are a matter of emotions - I've told myself that so many times now.)
(When you stay too still, you fall into the clutches of paranoia. Once I start worrying about Young Master, anxiety takes over me.)

Now it's your turn to serve me up something~. May I have an order of: peppermint cappuccino, warm mocha, strawberry milk, steamed expresso, and almond milk, please?
peppermint cappuccino— what’s your favorite genre of movie, tv show, or video game and why?
Fantasy, all the way. Ever since I was a wee bab, I've adored the idea of magic and monsters, of worlds both exactly like and completely different than ours. I don't think I'll tire of it, not any time soon and not ever.
warm mocha— would you rather be in a sunny field of flowers and grass, or would you rather be in an ambient cafe with rain outside?
Now that I'm older, the field of flowers and grass is a lot more tempting than it would have been, that's for sure, but I still will give my answer to the rainy cafe. I love the feel of rain, on and around me, and there's a special comfort to it. Tuck me inside a cafe, warm drink and pastry on my table, rain against the windows, calm music drifting through the building, fingers typing on a laptop as I write. Perfection!
strawberry milk— what’s your way of showing someone you love them, platonically or romantically?
Another thing besides acts of service, I do a lot of food-based stuff. Bringing treats, offering to help them cook, asking if they need something picked up, what kind of snacks do they like, oh hey here's a recipe you might enjoy. Food is both universal and so personal, and it feels intimate in a way.
steamed espresso— do you like roller coasters and other thrill rides at amusement parks? why or why not?
Yaaassssss! I don't go on them much, mostly because I can't afford to go to amusement parks any more, but I love roller coasters! I was scared of them as a kid, and I can't exactly remember when it changed, but it did change. They're a little bit of a hassle, because I have glasses and won't wear them on a coaster for fear of them flying off, but I like them a lot. I think they're a ton of fun.
almond milk— would you ever want to plan a road trip with friends? or would you rather visit one area and enjoy what’s there?
One day I'll take a road trip to visit you, picking up so many of our buddies along the way and it's gonna be grand. It's going to be a two in one, a massive road trip and then us hanging out and partying for our lives, I swear it. Or you could come down my way, we got lots of cool shit down here, despite the normal stuff and we could really make a legend out of it!

Noted. That’s certainly an interesting set of parallels, and certainly makes more sense than a less discussed rumor I’ve heard of about Paradox Pokemon actually being creations of something located at the very bottom of the great crater of Paldea. I’m not even sure what led to that rumor, especially since as far as I’m aware, the legend believed to be down there as detailed in the two very old journals merely makes it seem to be linked to Paldea’s Terastral phenomenon, not unlike how an Eternatus was responsible for Galar’s Dynamax phenomenon and thus Gigantimax forms.
Also, you bringing up the Dangerous Legendary License reminds me of thankful I got that license not too long after the incident where the Buzzwole that’s now been under my care and living at the shelter/adoption center near the Crown Tundra of Galar I live at and help run showed up, broke into one of the food sheds, drank a few large barrels worth of berry juice, then got into a fight fight with my old Incineroar pal out of fright. Man, that was a roller coaster, though thankfully Julien, the previously mentioned Incineroar, was able to calm the Buzzwole, who is now often called Hogan for a reason I can’t recall but was decided upon after it was clear they weren’t leaving, down enough that we could sort things out.
As for the Koraidon and Xurkitree duo I’ve mentioned, each named Emir and Electro, it’s even more surprising they’ve each appeared in ways that would make it likely for them to be distrustful to anyone they don’t know well. Electro showed up in the slopes of Freezington, having fled from something after arriving. I’m not sure what, but I think the nearby caves had something they were scared of and fled, hurting themself in the process, but thankfully a bit of time and light physical therapy with my Corviknight Arthur and my Dracozolt Volt helped out with that, but even so they’ve been far friendlier and less prone to paranoia than I expected. As for Emir, they seem to have arrived in a space-time rift, not unlike the ones that have occasionally brought ancient Pokemon like Kelavor to the modern day, and flew around for a bit, but ended up tangled in old power lines and crashing in the shelter’s main and largest yard area, and mercifully found quick quickly by another recent new resident in the Skeledirge I ended up taking in as a Fuecoco a few weeks backed and have named Cantante. Back to Emir, they needed a few days to recover from that, though thankfully with no major wounds. That’s when Electro came in to say hello in a sense, and though it was clearly quite awkward at first, by the time Emir was clear for physical activity, they immediately did a climbing race.
Now then, I’d anything else interesting happens, I’ll be sure to let you know.
Honestly, that theory about something at the bottom of the Crater may hold some weight - there have been reports of Paradox Pokemon in the crater since well before the time machine at the base was operational, and oddly accurate depictions of them have been found in journals and magazines. This indicates that, somehow, the Paradox Pokemon pulled in by the time machine weren't the first to arrive.
Meddling from a Dialga or Celebi is the main suspect, but some Pokemon down there that we don't know much about - mentioned in the same oddly accurate sources - could be the culprit, especially given that it seems that the time machine was powered by Terastal energy. Expeditions down there have been proposed to try and go past the lab and see what it is, but that's on hold until everything else calms down a little. I probably wouldn't be on the forefront of anything like that, but I'm fairly sure I can guess who would be.
Regarding the parallels, though…I think it's something like convergent evolution, if what we believe we know about Paradox Pokemon is true. They arose from similar circumstances - harsh environments, very different from here and now, brought here by humans - and that leads to similar traits, a bit like how Diglett and Wiglett look so similar. It's much less dramatic, but it seems to make a lot of sense.
Buzzwole is definitely under that license, as is Xurkitree despite their less...intense personality, so it's good that you have one! And it sounds like you got Hogan kind of the same way I did Lilith - a Pokemon broke in, freaked out, and got in a fight. The Berry Juice thing is kind of hilarious though.
It's wonderful that both those Pokemon have recovered well and are getting along! Just being summoned here from their home, and especially being hurt or scared right after, can have a lot of effect on a Pokemon's psyche. It seems like you're very well-equipped for this, which is incredibly lucky for these Pokemon!

How stinking adorable is #Zyggy here in her transparent hide from @enchantingpetscanada?! I'm so glad I bought it because how cute is this! They just got in a TON of new products too I can't wait to see in the store. I'm going to have to buy allllll the things 🙈 and probably more of these transparent houses! Thank you all for your sweet words for Badonkadonk and her pups. It's been such a roller coaster. We did end up losing a pup this morning, but not Sprout 🥺 so I'm waiting for this little one's name. I do expect Sprout will pass sometime today. The other pups though all look fantastic and wonderful so that's at least good. Today is a moving of Hammos day. With less than a month now until the move it's feeling real but I still have so much to do. I'm getting Rogue and Ironham from @caits.hamjam.fam this morning. Then I'm taking Rogue and Zyggy to move in with my mum. Then Ace, Elvis and Ru will move from my mum's to Hammy Godmother's. There are a lot of in between things (like tidying out bins, gathering their supplies, etc.) that need to be done so it's a bit of work. That being said I cannot sing the praises enough of these three humans especially. Cait has been an absolute legend helping us out. I know all my little friends are in the very best of hands with her and are living it up. After this exchange she will still have Jack and Marvel from us. My mum has been amazing and so kind and helpful. From helping me clean bins to letting me turn her spare bedroom into a semi functional Hamstery... I'm so grateful. Then there is Hammy Godmother who really is the cornerstone of all this. Without her help I don't think we could have moved. Not only will she be housing Ribbit, Lincoln, Elvis, Ru and Ace she also has ALL my condos and a ton of my supplies. I'm not really sure I can thank her and her husband enough for graciously opening their home to help us. I say this to acknowledge how insanely lucky and privileged we are. The help of our family, friends and hamster community has been huge and really, we couldn't have done this without them. Thank you all so so so much. I will forever be grateful to you all. https://www.instagram.com/p/CdBDLl-rwbg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ENTRY #2
Welcome to my blog, where I'll take you on an introduction-like story about the events of Borongan Fiesta and the city itself, including the thrilling Padul-ong Festival and sports like kayak racing and beach soccer.
Firstly, Borongan, officially the City of Borongan (Waray: Siyudad han Borongan;), is a 1st class component city and capital of the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 71,961 people. It is also nicknamed as the "City of the Golden Sunrise/Sunshine" and aspiring to be the "King City of the East". Its cityhood was settled by the Supreme Court of the Philippines when it decided with finality on April 12, 2007, the constitutionality of its city charter, Republic Act 9394, which conferred upon and elevated the status of the municipality of Borongan into a component city of the province of Eastern Samar. The City celebrates its annual Fiesta celebration in honor of its Patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Albeit the actual Feast day is on September 8, the celebration is usually a month long as each Barangay will hold its own "Barangay Night" where barangays would have a barangay-wide party through programs held in their respective Barangay Plazas. At the same time, schools would also have their annual reunions and respective "School Night". The series of celebrations is in anticipation of the actual Feast day.
What I love about Borongan is its fiesta. There are so many events and there is also a "Peryahan" which is a like a carnival and it starts like 2 weeks before the fiesta and I will share to y'all about what I did during and before the fiesta.
During the "Barangay Night", me and my cousins went to the Peryahan and we did a lot of things that can be done inside the Peryahan like riding the Vikings, Ferris Wheel, a roller coaster-like thingy ( I don't know the name LOL) and like playing darts and tossing coins to win prizes. The Vikings was the scary one because i felt like I were apart or separated from my body while I was riding. That's the most scary but fun experience at the Peryahan.
September 4, We went to the sea side and watched the kayak racing because there were competitors that are from my hometown. I was amazed at how they paddled the kayak for 2 kilometers and still had the energy as if they only run 100 meters. We also watched the beach soccer and I was happy because they still played even though it was so hot and the sand was very dry and dusty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's also explore the Padul-ong Festival. The Padul-ong Festival is a colorful event that symbolizes Borongan. The celebration is lively and joyful, expressing the rich traditions and cultures of the local area through music, dancing, and street activities.
Tumblr media
The Festival illustrates the legend of a mysterious “Lady in White” who allegedly visits the Hamorawon Spring, behind the Hamorawon Park, regularly. According to the legend, the Lady in White has been blessing the spring waters with miraculous healing powers. On September 7, Borongan offers mass in the wee hours of the morning, in the chapel of Barangay Punta Maria, signifying that the Padul-ong Festival has officially started. From the chapel, a small figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be transferred to Rawis Port through a fluvial procession where boat owners can join along with the official boat carrier of the small image across Rawis Bay. The figure would then be paraded through the town going to Borongan Cathedral. At the Borongan city plaza, different schools would reenact the town’s old legend on how the figure was brought to the Philippines. This is done as a contest, where several schools from the different municipalities, and schools within the City would compete among themselves through their performances. The festival commemorates the day the town received the figure of the Patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary, all the way from Portugal.
My blog is too long but I hope you enjoy reading! Feel free to leave any comments below, thanks!

Borongan City E. Samar
Borongan, officially the City of Borongan (Waray: Siyudad han Borongan; Filipino: Lungsod ng Borongan), is a 1st class component city and capital of the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines.
Borongan was taken from the local word "borong", which in the Waray-Waray language means "fog". The mountainous terrains surrounding Borongan is covered by a heavy veil of fog which can usually be seen during the cold and raining seasons and in the early hours of the morning. Because of this characteristic, the pre-Hispanic natives attributed the name borongan to the place, which was then a fragmented commune of households.

All about Padul-ong Festival
The Padul-ong Festival is the province’s way to pay homage to its Patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The festival commemorates the day they received the image. It depicts a mythical presentation on how the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary was inexplicably transported to Borongan City all the way from Portugal. The festival also illustrates the legend of a mysterious “Lady in White” who allegedly visits the Hamorawan Spring regularly.
According to the locals, the Lady in White has been blessing the spring waters with miraculous healing powers. Every September 7 or 8, Borongan City celebrates an early morning mass in a quaint chapel at Barangay Punta Maria. The mass signifies that the Padul-ong Festival has officially started. From the chapel, the small image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is transferred to Rawis Port. The first part of the festival which usually starts at 5:00 in the morning is the fluvial procession where boat owners can join along with the official boat carrier of the small image across Rawis Bay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was September 6, 2023 when six (6) celebrity guests took a visit here in Borongan to perform in TUKLAS that held in City Plaza.
I didn't mind even though it was very crowded because of the number of people, sometimes I even got pushed because of it, but the headache and irritation that I've felt disappeared when I saw my idol, Yeng Constantino, kinda felt some butterflies on my stomach when I saw how beautiful she is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
September 8 - fiesta celebration, me and my boyfriend went to church, lit candles and prayed to Mama Mary. Afterwards, we went home to eat and celebrate the kafiestahan of Mama Mary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apart from that, I didn't miss going to the fair either, I was forced to ride the vikings and I wasn't happy, I cried while yelling for them to stop the engine. I always go with my boyfriend on every ride HAHAHAHA from vikings, ferris wheel, horror train to mini roller coaster of the peryahan. All the rides we rode were free, because we knew the owner.
Tumblr media
Therefore, I can say that the fiesta of Borongan City is full of fun, from the events that brought happiness to the people, down to the faith that we have in honor to our patroness, Blessed Virgin Mary.

First!!
I’m not sure I sent it already but just to be safe! Can I have Sally and the gang react to finding out that thier goofy yet sweet crush has wings? Kinda like Angel wings but they never knew cause she always hid it with bandages? I got the idea from “ after dark “ by asian kung-fu generation. I like to see that the reader lend a helping hand or wing...like give them a ride if they are late to some place or just want a flight ride for fun XD and use her wing to shield her friends or crush from the rain if they forgot thier umbrella, letting them rest their head on her wings if tired? And reacting to her crash landing into trees since she’s bad at landing lol I hope this was ok.
The Gang finding out their s/o has wings-
Ashley~
She's of course shocked at first, but once that wears off, the first thing the resident dare-devil of the four horsemen would want to do is have her [s/o] take her for a ride. [S/o] was nervous to have such precious cargo with them as they flew, insisting it was much too risky for their clumsy self to carry her, but Ash was relentless and eventually wore them down when she really turned on the charm and promised for a hundredth time to hold on tight. She had thought the ultimate rush could be found on some especially twisted roller coaster, or driving her motorcycle at breakneck speed down an empty highway, but absolutely nothing compared to the unbridled elation of soaring through the air while wrapped in her lovers arms. (The additional dose of adrenaline from the less-than-graceful landing was just a bonus)
Larry~
Once he picks his jaw up off the floor, he immediately grabs his sketchbook and gets to work in capturing the newly-divulged beauty of his partner. He'd drawn them plenty of times before, but the reveal had him seeing [s/o] in a whole new light. He ends up sketching them all night in every pose and angle he can think to ask them to strike before the implications of [s/o]s anatomy start to finally sink in: He had considered himself cursed since that fateful day in his childhood, when he committed a horrible sin and was touched by what he swore was a demon. He had been so focused on the negative, in the reality of evil and the torment it had bestowed on him for his transgressions, that he had never considered that there was another side to the coin- If demons were real, then why would a divine counterpart be so far-fetched? He slowly put his sketchbook aside and approached [s/o], his eyes filling with tears before dropping to his knees before them. He clutched their hands and looked up at them in awe. He always knew [s/o] was special. He hadn't admitted it out loud, wanting to avoid sounding corny, but from the moment he had first met them, he felt they were meant to be together. He thought that maybe he had found a soulmate, but had never considered that he had found an angel, his angel, until the evidence was in the flesh before his eyes. It was the first time he had openly wept in front of them. [S/o] knelt and held him tightly, letting him cry in their shoulder until his sobs slowly subsided. In that moment, wrapped in his partners warm wings and loving embrace, Larry finally, at last, felt truly at peace...
Todd~
He looks more puzzled than [s/o] had ever seen him. He quickly approached and began to examine [s/o], lightly prodding at the point where their wings meet their back, gently testing the mobility of the joint and combing through their feathers, wondering aloud about skeletal and muscular structure. He begins asking questions rapid-fire, his curiosity obviously peaked by the unexpected reveal: "Were you born like this? Are you capable of flight? Do you molt? Do you have any other anatomy more similar to birds than humans?" The list went on and on and on. He's was absolutely fascinated! He took page upon page of notes while examining [s/o]s wings and ended up going on a week-long research bender at the library, checking out every book he can find on convergent evolution, evolutionary biology, human and bird anatomy, legends and myths about winged humans, and a few books on avian care and husbandry for good measure. [S/o] ends up learning a lot about themselves in the process of his research, and finds it's really nice to finally be able to fold their wings around Todd while cuddling up to him when he falls asleep at his desk while reading late at night.
Sal~
Sal is at first speechless- it felt rather odd for him to be on this end of a reveal. Normally he's the one getting exposed, ready for all manor of invasive questions and putting up emotional shields in case of rejection, but this time, it was his partner baring all to him. When he didn't immediately react, [s/o] became a little self-conscious. They wondered if it was too soon to share their secret and apologized for springing this on him without much of a warning. They offered to put their bandages back on and quietly assured Sal that it was alright if this was a deal breaker- finding out your partner wasn't exactly a normal person is a lot to handle, and they didn't want to burden him more than he already was. This snapped Sal out of his shock. He tripped over his words some, but managed to assure [s/o] that that wasn't the case at all- on the contrary, he felt incredibly privileged to be trusted with this kind of thing. He knew first-hand how hard it was to open up to others and show your real self to them. He only allowed his closest friends and family to see him as he truly was, and despite knowing deep down that they loved him and would never spurn him because of his physical differences, it was still really hard to take that leap of faith with someone. He took their hand and genuinely thanked [s/o] for sharing such a personal thing with him, once again emphasizing that they never had to hide anything from him and that knowing them as they were could never ever be a burden or change how he felt about them (and also that the wings made them look really, really, really, really awesome).

The Winter Prince Review/Analysis
Tumblr media
So I have a complicated relationship with YA fiction. In general there’s the old, "is it ok to like media for younger demographics," debate. The common consensus pendulum will swing from "why are you so against media that teenage girls like" to "you’re just numbing yourself with simple, easy material and aren’t branching out and growing up." The obvious middle ground is there are high quality works for all demographics, so just have a well-rounded media diet, but even then sometimes I have trouble ignoring the noise.
My specific baggage comes from having come of age once the YA market was well established with the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight, and the Hunger Games. So while I was the perfect target audience for this boom, I was never really encouraged to explore outside of it. There are some great YA series I still enjoy and am glad to have read, but there is still a general sort of flavor found in most popular commercial entries. These days, even adult-marketed books will sometimes carry that same flavor, just due to how much money can be made by also being able to pull in a YA audience.
All this is to say, when I picked up, The Winter Prince, a middle grade historical fiction title published by Elizabeth Wein in 1993, a part of me still had this fear it would be a simple, easily consumable, safe affair. And instead it was a wild roller-coaster that went harder than many works I've read praised for their grittiness.
For more context, here’s the summary: Medraut is the eldest son of Artos, high king of Britain; and, but for an accident of birth, would-be heir to the throne. Instead, his younger half-brother, Lleu, is chosen to be prince of Britain. Lleu is fragile, often ill, unskilled in weaponry and statesmanship, and childishly afraid of the dark. Even Lleu's twin sister, Goewin, seems more suited to rule the kingdom.
Medraut cannot bear to be commanded and contradicted by this weakling brother who he feels has usurped his birthright and his father's favor. Torn and bitter, haunted by jealousy, self-doubt, and thwarted ambition, he joins Morgause, the high king's treacherous sister, in a plot to force Artos to forfeit his power and kingdom in exchange for Lleu's life. But this plot soon proves to be much more - a battlefield on which Medraut is forced to decide, for good or evil, where his own allegiance truly lies...
If some of these details ring familiar to you, it is because Wein, is pretty open about this being her retelling of Arthurian legend. While the setting is purely grounded in 6th century Great Britain, considering the focus Medraut and Morgause’s relationship gets, to the point where the entire novel is in the style of him recounting the entire narrative to her, it isn’t hard to guess the dark secret bubbling below the surface. This series has often been compared to the Queen’s Thief series, another middle grade series that still had a pretty substantial adult audience. Never venturing anywhere too inappropriate for twelve year-olds, but also not talking down to the audience. So I expected the backstory elements to remain a tastefully implied backdrop to the sibling rivalry brewing in the forefront.
Anyway three or so chapters in Medraut very directly explains that he is the product of incest to the twins. And from there we have a very intense story of inter-generational abuse and trauma that does not pull back its punches.
It’s hardly the first narrative I’ve consumed to go there. In fact it makes a surprisingly amazing companion piece to the anime Penguindrum, I just finished. (Hopefully I can get around to reviewing that as well.) But what drew me in from the start was how it knew how to let a scene play out without an internal monologue providing commentary on why Medraut is making his choices and how he feels. the first half of the novel or so is mostly vignettes that all strung together paint a very clear picture of his relationship with the twins. Perhaps it sounds like I’m just describing good writing, but again, even literary works I’ve picked up will feel the need to explain everything in clear, distinct terms. The subtlety of the Winter Prince comes less from a need for censorship, but more from trusting the audience to be able to put the pieces together.
And along with that confidence we’re able to witness the nuance of Medraut’s feelings. We see him genuinely look out for the twins, bond and care for them, even while his resentment grows. In one scene he will affirm Lleu of his ability to one day grow into a great king while the next he will bond with Goewin of their jealousy of his position. I’ve seen other reviewers describe his behavior as confusing and nonsensical, but to me it felt like a very real sort of love-hate relationship that comes from these tense situations.
All helped by the fact that Lleu is more than just a spoiled brat. Over the novel he comes into his own as a brilliant swordsman and sociable charmer. (And in interesting fashion, this growing competency only fuels Medraut and Goewin’s jealousy.) He has his own trauma and baggage beyond simple "pressures to be golden child/heir," and it is genuinely painful to see him try and cope with Medraut’s growing erratic behavior. It is beyond easy to sympathize with both brothers, which makes the inevitable writing on the wall all the more painful to read.
I have to admit that the latter half of the book is weaker than the first. We trade out those vignettes for more plotty action, which can make the swing of love-hate feel more melodramatic. But I was hooked enough into the characters and their struggles to still enjoy it, even if it was less tightly constructed. Plus what it loses in tasteful balance it more than makes up in sheer excitement and tension. For the last fourth of the book, I would read a paragraph, scream, and have to turn away because I couldn’t believe this middle grade novel was going there. Hell, by the end the shock value transcended the age demographic issue, it was like the entire curtain of innuendo had been dropped to reveal the raw wound that Medraut saw most his existence as. Seriously the fact we have a canon bi protagonist is a footnote in comparison to the torrent of pain and self-loathing.
If you’re not the type to enjoy that high stakes emotional whirlwind, then I understand this book not being for you. I don’t know if it would be classified as "good rep" or a "respectful portrayal of serious issues," but good Lord did it remind me why I love reading after a boring stream of smug "nuancedTM" bestsellers. Where it prides itself in being messy and complex, but never to the point where you lose sympathy for a "good guy" as there is always a bigger evil you can hate without question. Perhaps I’m just tired of living through moral panics, but in a world where school-boards argue they have to protect 8th graders from being exposed to curse words, the fact this little firecracker was not only put out by a mainstream publisher in the 90s but was marketed towards children, it feels like a miracle it exists. Like I can’t imagine what twelve year old they expected to pick this up.
But then again, I do remember being in 8th grade or so, picking up what i assumed would be another middle-of-the-road paranormal romance YA novel, and then having my world rocked when it ended on a tragic cliffhanger. I reread the ending over and over again, stunned that a novel was "allowed" to do something like that and make me feel such intense things.
That said, the series apparently was never a commercial success, to the point where the final novel remains unpublished bc of publishers not wanting to touch a series finale with such low sales. Call this a call to action or whatever, but if you check out/like this book, then consider going the extra effort to purchase a new copy. Or it doesn’t even have to be this specific book. Just at the end of the day, remember to support small, weird, yet daring art.
