Weirdly enough, I often find myself reading less in the summer, since I have more time than I do during the rest of the year to do other things. Also artfight has been eating up more than a bit of my free time! But here’s a collection a graphic novels I sat around on the hammock reading, and some novels I finished up...
(Everyone go read All Systems Red, holy crow guys)
Tumblr media
A Whale of the Wild
The “sequel” to A Wolf Called Wander, though it doesn’t actually connect to the previous novel except in the stylistic/thematic sense. A Whale of the Wild is very much a standalone novel. And a pretty decent one! Personally, I think I liked Wolf more, but this one was a pleasant, informative read, with just the right amount of crushing dread sprinkled in. It’s about a young orca called Vega who is learning to become a new wayfinder for her pod but who still has a lot to learn, especially in an ocean that is becoming increasingly hostile to orcas and the other sealife that live alongside humans. When a devastating earthquake hits, Vega and her little brother find themselves separated from their family, lost in a now horrifyingly unfamiliar environment, and fighting starvation as the salmon that sustain them become more and more unreliable. It’s a desperate fight for survival as they search for food and their missing family. This book is written for a middle grade level, and does a really good job of putting the current environmental crisis into an animal’s perspective while giving the readers something to hope for.
Tumblr media
The Adventure Zone: The Crystal Kingdom
Every July I eagerly anticipate the next Adventure Zone graphic novel. This one is for their fourth arc, The Crystal Kingdom, in which Magnus, Taako, and Merle respond to a SOS from a floating laboratory that is gradually being consumed by crystals and which threatens the entire world should it fall into the ocean. Carey Pietsch’s art continues to be absolutely fantastic, so beautifully and hilariously expressive, and this one delivers some great Merle moments, lots of Carey Fangbattle, and, of course, Kravtiz. Kravitz, my beloved…
Anyway, I obviously always recommend these. If you’ve never gotten into The Adventure Zone, I totally recommend either trying these graphic novels — or even better, just go listen to the podcast because it really is both hilarious and creates a shockingly good and heart-wrenching story by the end.
Tumblr media
All Systems Red
I’ve seen The Murderbot Diaries on my dash occasionally, and it always looked interesting, but a friend’s recommendation finally compelled me to read the first novella of the series. And holy shit y’all. Absolutely the best book I’ve read this month, it’s amazing. Mind-blowingly good. Also, if you’re like me and want a good audiobook, it’s a nice three-hour listen, very chill!
Anyway, All Systems Red is about a Security Unit, an artificially created being that’s part-organic part-mechanical and all-company-owned-and-controlled. However, self-named “Murderbot” has managed to hack into the system that suppresses its own will, and is now coasting along, doing the least amount of work its job requires not to be noticed, while preferring to spend all its time watching the hours and hours of soap operas it has downloaded into its brain. And it’s a tolerable if somewhat dull life, until the science team that it's currently rented to is attacked and the whole mission goes pear-shaped. Suddenly Murderbot has to scramble to keep its humans alive… while its humans scramble with the realization that their “SecUnit” isn’t actually a mindless robot like they had all believed...
This story is both gripping and hilariously funny. Murderbot has such a unique voice and perspective and it’s an absolute pleasure to follow its story. I reallly need to read the next book...
Tumblr media
Asterix and the Banquet
A classic. I was startled when I realized I hadn’t actually read this Asterix story… but hell I’m not gonna complain, it lets me read one of the originals for the first time again! In this Asterix volume, the Indomitable Gauls and the Romans end up arranging a bet — the Romans intend to keep them under siege, trapped in their village, while Asterix is confident that he can easily evade them… and will prove it by going on a tour around all of Gaul, collecting iconic foods from each region in order to return and put on a fine banquet. So we get a fantastic adventure in which Asterix and Obelix run all over the country, pursued the whole way, while making cheerful stops at the various eateries along the way. Also the first book Dogmatix shows up in! All around, a wonderful read, fun like all the best Asterix comics are.
Tumblr media
Beauty Pop v4
A less impressive graphic novel. The first Beauty Pop is one of my guilty pleasure manga because… it really is pretty stupid but in the best possible ways. I mean, the whole thing is framed around hairstyling battles, like a shojo sports manga without the sports. It’s bonkers. Unfortunately, the series does not really manage to hold up, and it really begins to feel repetitive and dragging as it continues… as a lot of series like this do. *shrug* Unsurprising but still kinda disappointing I suppose. The building three-way romantic tension is mildly interesting if for no other reason than the main character Does Not Notice and Does Not Care about any of it, which is amusing and refreshing.
Tumblr media
FRNCK v5
Now this series only gets better and better as it goes. This is the first book of the second arc, and somehow the danger just seems to be ramping up and up and up. The cavefamily have lost their home… as well as Léonard and Gargouille. Heartbroken, shocked, and angry, Franck is the one who ends up shouldering the blame for their presumed deaths as the others mourn. Things only get worse when Franck finds himself separated from the family, and in the territory of another tribe, this one hostile and cannibalistic...
Tumblr media
Haikyuu v5
I continue to read this series because it continues to be charming… though it is beginning to feel, maybe, just a little repetitive. Kind of an inevitability with sports manga. But so far it continues to be good enough to overcome that. I’m not sure what I can say about this series that I haven’t already, so I’ll simply say it continues to be one of the most impressive sports manga I’ve read, and the author does a fantastic job of creating engaging characters, fleshed out teams, and really compelling relationships. I do genuinely adore all the main members of Crows, along with a number of characters from the rival teams as well. And of course it has some kickass volleyball scenes that are just drawn so dramatically they can’t help but take your breath away a little.
Tumblr media
M*A*S*H Goes To Maine
Meh. The original book of the series was actually quite good in my opinion. This one… considerably less so. The first part I enjoyed more, since it was about Hawkeye, Trapper, Duke, and Oliver Jones trying to set up the FinestKind Clinic and Fishmarket in Crabapple Cove (which… is just the best premise I could have ever asked for). However, the book spends most of its time describing the quirky lives and times of other people living in the area and I… just… don’t care. It was funny at times but… I just don’t care. I wanted to hear more about the main cast. Also I found this book felt more racist and misogynistic than the first which also put me off :/ Wouldn’t bother if I were you. Go read the first book instead, or better yet just watch the TV show which is an obvious banger.
Tumblr media
My Heart’s in the Highlands
I have had this on my “currently reading” list for so long but I’m officially giving up. It’s a really good book in theory but my god I can’t get over the pacing.
It’s about Lady Jane, a woman studying medicine in Edinburgh in 1888, and who suddenly finds herself back in the Highlands in the 13th century. Lost and confused, Jane is now at the mercy Clan Donald’s hospitality while she tries to adjust to this new world and hunts for her broken time machine. Fortunately, this hospitality include a burgeoning friendship with a red-haired warrior woman, Ainslie nic Dòmhnaill, who opens Jane’s eyes to the way the world could be.
Listen. It drives me nuts. This book should be completely up my alley, it has everything I like — IT HAS ALL OF ITS HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES CITED AT THE BACK, LITTLE EXTRA DETAILS ABOUT EVERY CHAPTER. THAT’S MY SHIT RIGHT THERE. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LIKE BEING ABLE TO GO OVER HISTORICAL DETAILS?? AND WELL RESEARCHED FOOTNOTES?? And yet it doesn’t. Fucking. Work for me. It has a kickass Scottish warrior lady as a love interest! It has a badass lady doctor! It has fish-out-of-water culture shock! But it also has a completely meandering plot, no sense of building tension, and a romance that just happens out of nowhere and feels completely unearned and uninteresting.
I would genuinely just rather read Outlander again, which I know has its own host of problems, but at least Outlander felt exciting and interesting and tense and funny. The romance built in fits and starts, it was complicated, and kept me interested. That book had me hooked (and has me hooked every time I reread it) whereas this book I’ve been sadly picking at for months like its a plate of overcooked spinach. This felt like an attempt at a queer, historically accurate knockoff which I would normally be super into but which just could not stick the landing.
Tumblr media
Moomin on the Riviera
My first time actually reading anything from the Moomin canon. I have zero idea how to feel about it! It certainly is as feral as I’ve heard described! Overall, I think I enjoyed it but it sure made me feel strange emotions I didn’t know existed. I’m not even going to try to describe it. Read it if you want a batshit insane anti-capitalist comic.
Tumblr media
Surviving the City
This was good in some areas, less good in others. It had a very interesting indigenous perspective on life in the modern city, the foster system, and The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women issue, which I’ve never seen handled in a book before. Something about the pacing did not completely click with me and I found myself getting easily distracted, but it’s definitely worth the read just to experience it and look at the issues it deals with through the characters’ (and author’s) eyes. It did give me a lot to think about and wrestle with, which is sometimes the best thing a book can give you.
Tumblr media
Torchwood: Pack Animals
A really fun read, more so than I had ever expected! If you like Torchwood and want more stories about the team before everything goes to shit, this is perfect for that. It includes the entire cast, an interest mystery to be unravelled, lots of slavering monsters, Rhys being really wonderful and sweet (which I didn’t know I wanted until I read this book), and all the humour I expect from Torchwood. I had to send a lot of quotes to my long-suffering girlfriend who a) does not watch this show but b) needs to tolerate it because I find it too funny to keep to myself. It was good enough to make me go out another book of the series since this was the only one my library carried.

Dear All Might... [Aizawa Shota x Reader]
ok folks here’s my yearly contribution to this blog. i’m very clearly out of practice but idk reading vigilantes gave me some inspo cause i loved how they kinda delved into Aizawa’s more snarky humorous side so ye
p.s. - not that this matters much but this is pre- ‘Aizawa moving to work at UA’ just fyi so he’s like a year or two younger
p.s.s - this isn’t exactly n/s/f/w and nothing happens but there is some slightly risqué talk/nods to SexyTimes so u have been warned
_______________________________________________
This was someplace he never quit imagined himself ending up. He didn’t necessarily think that in regards to being with you, though finding someone who was willing to deal with his short fuse and innate grumpiness was nothing short of a miracle, and the idea of being with you, let alone moving in together, was something that never even got close to gracing his thoughts on that day he had accidentally bumped into you almost two years ago now. No, this was something entirely different that actually managed to make a sly smirk crack through his ever tired facade as he read over the words written at the top of a neatly folded paper he found sitting on top of a small box tucked away in your closet.
“Dear All Might…”
For a moment, that alone wasn’t enough to get a reaction out of you. You had been preoccupied with organizing all your kitchen utensils to be packed away in preparation for the move, plus it had been years since that short and sweet introduction had been a part of you weekly (and sometimes daily) life. Shota figured you couldn’t have been older than fifteen or sixteen when you had written this judging by the cutesy stationary paper used that had been scribbled with hearts and stars around the words written. He tried not to laugh and give himself away too quickly as he ignored the shouted ‘HUH?’ from where you were and continued on reading loud enough for you to hear clearly.
“I hope this letter finds you easily, I’m sure you get thousands a day considering how amazing you are-“
It was your turn to go through a moment of shock before practically scrambling off your seat at the kitchen table and stomping your way through your apartment and into your room, though when you attempted to snatch the object of your embarrassment away from your oh so loving partner, he simply held it juuust out of your reach and continued on if only to indulge in the awfully cute look of huffy annoyance written on your face.
“I’ve written you a few times before but I won’t bother with too many details-“
“Ok ha-ha very funny, can we please get back to packing before I send you home?”
“-But either way I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you do. Your hero work is inspiring and you always look very handsome doing it-”
“OK!” You shouted, finally jumping up and snatching the letter from his hands and quickly hiding it firmly against your back and slipping it into your pocket before giving him an almost motherly look of disapproval.
“You did ask me to help.”
“Help pack, Shota, not go through my shit.” You huffed, though it was rare for him to crack a smile that wouldn’t make you show a smile of your own no matter how hard you tried to fight it.
Yes, it was true, you were quite the All Might fan girl in your high school days, so much so that you were surprised Shota was able to even find a letter that went unsent. Though you still did respect All Might immensely, with age your obsession had slowly faded as you found other things that needed your focus upon springing into adulthood. Plus on top of college and then working on finding a job and whatnot, you had the pleasure of finding a new hero to crush on, only this one didn’t take any lame fan mail to get him to agree to a single coffee date that led you to where you were today, in your room, arguing over a letter. That was what made you shake your head and chuckle, thinking about the ‘then and now’ of your life choices.
“What happened to all that ‘What’s mine is yours’ type of talk most couples fawn over.” He muttered, finally getting back on track with his previous goal of unloading your closet into boxes.
“Last time I checked that was more reserved for married couples. Are you trying to tell me something, Shota?” You teased, wiggling your eyebrows at him as he rolled his eyes before standing up with a box in hand.
“You wish.”
“Maybe.” You hummed, leaning up against the wall. It’s not like you were exactly against the idea of marrying him…
“Maybe?” He repeated, dropping the box of clothing down on your bed with a sigh before placing a hand on his hip and rubbing the back of his neck with the other. “What am I supposed to do with a maybe?”
“Well I don’t know.” You said with a smirk, pushing yourself off of the wall and closing the gap between the two of you, loosely wrapping your arms around his shoulders. “I feel like you’d kinda have to ask the question first to get a real answer.”
“What makes you think I’m going to ask the question at all if I know the answer is going to be a ‘maybe’?” He questioned back, raising a brow, though when he saw your shoulders slouch as you rolled your eyes, he moved his hands to your waist and gave a gentle ‘I’m just kidding’ sort of tug.
“Y’know you’re starting to make me feel like I should have pursued All Might instead.” You retorted. If you didn’t have your own snarky streak, you wouldn’t have survived this long with him anyways, but it was nice to keep him on his toes sometimes and make him think you were actually annoyed.
“Yeah? How? With this?” He said, letting you go and waving the letter that had previously been tucked into your back pocket, another tired smirk tugging at the corner of his lips as he watched you gasp and pat your pocket before giving him that classic look that screamed you were currently calling him an array of names centered around ‘Sly cheeky bastard’ in your head.
“Well at least I tried with him.” You huffed, snatching the letter from him once more.
“You, on the other hand, weren’t that hard to please.” You responded with your head tilted high in a sad attempt to look down on him despite the difference in height. “...And you still aren’t.”
“I’ll have to disagree.” He muttered, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I mean you said yes when I asked you out.” You muttered, hooking your thumbs into the loopholes of his pants and tugging him close enough for you to kiss at his jaw before looking up to him in a way that you knew from experience made him just a tad bit weak. “And nowadays it doesn’t take that much work to make you see things slightly in my favor...”
“Hm.” Was the only response he even bothered mustering up as he snaked his hands back around your waist and then some a little lower. Of course he knew there were more urgent priorities that warranted his visit, but if you were going to initiate and he had the time anyways…
“But no you’re right, you’re totally hard to please.” You cheered, releasing your grip on him and turning around to saunter your way back to the kitchen. “So maybe next time I’ll just have to start a ‘Dear Eraser Head’, and then-” You paused, turning to give him a cheeky wink, “Then we’ll see just where we can go from there.”

How would the V3 boys (plus Kaede,,) react to having an quiet S/O that’s the Ultimate Attorney? They’re more serious and talkative in trials ig
I'm sorry if it wasn't what you mean. And I was probably repeating myself so sorry for that too...
Tumblr media
V3 boys + Kaede react to having an quiet Ultimate Attorney! S/O. They’re more serious and talkative in trials
Ryoma Hoshi
He was surprised that you wanted to hang out with someone like him but not because you were attorney or something he just didn't thought someone whould willingly spend time with him.
And guess what the two of you started dating after some time. It was quite risky since you were in killing game but who cares to be honest.
After first murder you took it seriously and searched for clues. When he saw how serious you got but he didn't found it wierd.
However during trial he was amazed by you. How confident yet cautious you were. It made him meet new you not like he didn't like the way you were before.
After first trial was over he told you how amazing you did to cheer you up since you did feel bad for the culprit.
Gonta Gokuhara
Gonta fell in love with you on the first sight. So he decided to talk with you. At first you were surprised but Gonta was extremely sweet.
Still the fact that you were in the killing game didn't change. You spent more time with him and it resulted in you two dating.
He was very impressed by your talent in general and sometimes asked you about it.
As soon as first trial started he knew that thanks to you and Shuichi you will find culprit in no time. And that's when you took over the trial and Gonta was really impressed by how serious and talkative you became.
But after the trial he was shocked by killers identity still it didn't change fact that you were amazing! It was the same case each time a trial ended and he made sure to tell you how great you did.
K1B0
To be honest he thought that you whould be well... Less shy for someone who is an attorney but he didn't judge you.
He enjoyed talking to you anyway. Not only that Keebo caught himself having a crush on you... You were just different than other students and you were allways so nice.
And since the time limit was close to an end he decided not to waste any time and he told you. Since you felt the same you went for it.
But that's when murder happened both you and Keebo were shocked. Still he believed that you will get out of this alive.
And when he saw how serious you became he felt like meeting entire new person. Of course it didn't mean that he liked you any less.
Even now when it wasn't the first trial he still felt the same- shocked but in the good way. He probably isn't used to it...
Kaede Akamatsu
She was allways so nice to you and your shy nature was something she found normal and kinda cute.
The killing game didn't stop you from falling for each other and it was just a matter of time before you started dating.
But murder happened and now you had to face it... You approached the topic very seriously so both you and Kaede carefully investigated everything.
During trial you and Kaede were very talkative and she was happy to see you looking extremely confident. At first she was surprised by your behavior but she got used to it quickly and to be honest she was proud of you.
Kaito Momota
He really enjoyed your company and didn't found it wierd that you were shy but around Kaito you felt much more confident. There was just something about Kaito that just made you feel this way.
So it wasn't a big surprise when you realized how you felt. Kaito was extremely sweet and you just couldn't help but fall for him. You decided to not waste time and just confess and he felt the same way and since you were inside this hell there was no time to waste on thinking about it.
Fortunately but unfortunately a murder occurred. You were saved but now you had to survive the trial.
Kaito was worried about you but when he noticed how serious you were he thought that you were able to handle it but it didn't mean that he whould let you do everything alone.
During trial however he was shocked by how different you acted since there was a huge difference between you during investigation and trial.
Shuichi Saihara
You being quiet wasn't anything he found off. And he really enjoyed your company even when you weren't talking just being able to look at you is enough. Wait now that I talk about it in this way he most probably has a crush on you.
However when the first murder appeared the two of you worked together during investigation and both of you took it seriously.
So when you became talkative during trial it wasn't any surprise to him and tried his best too.
Rantaro Amami
When he first met you he was impressed by your talent. And the fact that you weren't talkative was reasonable to him.
But there was just something about you that made him want to spend as much time as he could. And yes he managed to fall in love.
You were just amazing... Each time you smiled gave him determination to end killing game. He wanted to protect you no matter what.
Unfortunately the hell began as the first victim was found... Of course you don't plan on letting Rantaro- I mean everyone die like this.
That's when things got serious. He was not expecting you to act like this but it means that he has a lot to lern about you. And he was looking forward to it to be honest.
Kokichi Ouma
Kokichi tried to get something out of you since you were so quiet. He got really interested in you since he didn't thought that attorney whould be so quiet.
Still it didn't change a fact that he loved to mess with you and interact with you in general. He doesn't know how but he just fell in love with you.
It was probably during trial. Looking at the fact that you were extremely different than you normally were and thanks to you the trial was even more interesting. But apologized to only you for what he did during trial.
You sure were something... And some time later he decided to just don't care and tell you.
However after you started dating he was even more determined to end the killing game.
Korekiyo Shinguji
Before you got to talk he observed you and others. You were sure much less talkative than others.
Whe he started a conversation he didn't expect you to be an attorney but you were probably just anxious since it seemed like you whould spend a lot of time here.
He got interested in you and wanted to lern more about you. You ended up having a crush on each other- but Korekiyo decided to not keep it a secret.
After first trial he was amazed by the fact that you hid all your potential and as soon as everything was over he completed you mostly about how good you did.
And with each trial he just felt excited to see your full potential. Your determination was truly beautiful...

Ficlet snippet. Input needed
Okey folks specifically @hollyashton , @stephschoices and @misha726author , who I consider some of the most amazing writers out there and who’s work inspired me to join the fandom here. Had a question. Been working on a journal if you will for my MC Sienna in Endless Summer. Now at one point I did do as an excersise since my writing had gotten rusty, more of a story but heavily transcribed from the amazing talent at Pixelberry’s work. Basically just editing work I guess. Anyway, like your thoughts on all this and or should I stick with the journal? (To see the Journal so far check the #Endless Journal or #fanfiction tags on my writing blog @shadowrebel-17 ’s page)
Anyway, here is a snippet from one of my fav parts of the series. The plane ride. Especially when she meets Jake. Followed by the same scene, in Journal form. Please please compare and give me feedback! Sorry its kinda long.
…..
She works her way farther forward, leaning into the open doorway to the cockpit, thinking to her self about the trip so far. ‘Definitely a better way to fly then with an airline ‘
The pilot lay back in his seat, combat boots up on the panel, hands folded on his lap.
Sienna cleared her throat. “Excuse me, it’s Jake right?” weren’t we supposed to have landed by now…?”
Nothing…
“Wait?! You’re asleep!?” she says in shock.
“Hrn?” he jolts awake, then blinking he turns, shifting in his seat. Eyes meeting hers.
‘Ohmygod… he was in that dream too…’ she stares a moment lost in thought.
“Listen, Princess, don’tcha know its rude to wake someone who’s taking a nap?” he drawls out with a southern twang in slight annoyance.
“Princess?” she blinks.
“What can I say?” he smiles “I give nicknames to people who annoy me”
“In that case I’m calling you Aragorn” she retorts with a smirk.
He blinks. Startled by her quick comeback. “Aragorn? I… don’t know what you’re talking about.” He briefly runs a couple fingertips over the week old stubble on his face.
She nods, indicating his features and the unkempt surfer hair.
“You know, Lord of the Rings?”
“Never heard of it” he deadpans but the smile tugging at the edge of his mouth breaks the façade.
“you’re a bad liar…” she grins knowingly.
“…fine” he smiles. His opinion of her going up visibly.
“Call me Aragorn. I like it. That man was a bad-ass. Anyway relax, we ain’t landin’ ‘till—“ he turns back towards the control panel. Then pauses.
“The hell? That time ain’t right.. and that ain’t right either!” he says giving the instruments a few hard whacks.
Sienna’s grip on the doorframe tightens a little more. ‘Maybe I should have called him Han Solo…’
“You sure you know what you’re doing…?” she says glancing around the cockpit, suddenly feeling like she was in that ‘piece of junk’ as Luke Skywalker had called it.
“Princess if you knew half the things I’ve survived you’d bet on me to get you through anyth—“
Out of nowhere sudden severe turbulence shakes the plane, throwing Sienna against the cockpit wall hard. She winces, gasping in shock and pain as she attempts to get her footing back, hands gripping the co-pilot’s seat in a vice grip. Watching out the windscreen as the sky grows quickly black, the darkest storm clouds she’s ever seen rushing towards them.
“Aww that’s just great! that stormfront’s moving in quick!” Jake mutters, Jockeying the controls as he shuts the auto pilot down and resumes manual control, slowing the plane down just slightly as all the dials are swinging every which way. Alert tones sounding off and red lights flicking on.
“Get your ass in a seat, hear? And tell the others to buckle up!” he grits out.
“But….” She starts to say, a tremble in her voice.
“Now princess!” he barks with the air of command.
Her muscles respond almost on their own accord quickly taking her from cockpit and back to the main cabin, the close walls the only thing keeping her up as the plane rocks violently. Fellow passengers yelling amidst the chaos.
“Oh I am reaaally regretting that Airport Chipotle!” a big guy groans out. “Don’t puke bro! If you puke, I’m gonna puke!” the foot ball player next to him yelps.
“Where the hell this storm come from, it was a clear day!” another blond girl, growls angrily.
“It happens okay? This is totally normal!” Jake the pilot yells out of the cockpit to the others.
“Yyyeah sure… THAT looks normal!” another person points out the window.
Orange and yellow balls of electricity and lightning coalesce from the sky, exploding around them in bright showers of sparks and bolts.
Sienna’s eye’s go wide as she grips a seat near Sean and another girl.
“It looks like ball lightning…” says one of the students who had been quiet to this point, a very petite girl in an orange sweater says in a mixture of awe and fear. Adjusting her glasses as they tried to fall off “But I’ve never seen anything quite like this!”
“This is all wrong! I cant die here surrounded by these morons!” the pale Aleister wails, gripping his arm rests for dear life.
“Everyone just breathe! We’re going to get through this!” Sean Gayle’s voice booms out above the others, looking to the red-headed girl in the seat in front of him.
“Oh god oh god oh god…” she whimpers beside where Sienna had paused.
CRracKoOm!
Blisteringly loud thunder deafens everyone, white light shocking the plane as lightning strikes, sparks and a few curses swirling in the cockpit.
The jet like whine of the turbines outside the plane rise before stuttering then fade to nothing. The propeller blades slowing to windmill uselessly in the air.
“Welp, engines just lost power.” Jake says in a collected focused tone above the din. More alarms wailing in the cockpit. “Bringin’ her in manually. Everybody hold on!”
The shouting grew louder as everyone starts to panic after that. Clinging on to the seat, frozen in place Sienna glances back, looking for Diego and spots instead, one person who’s not panicking.
A girl with her dark hair in a tight ponytail and a long scar across her eye sits alone in the back of the plane. Her face silent and unfazed.
Staring, not remembering meeting her yet Sienna is suddenly shook as a hand pulls on her shoulder, Lila, the tour guide trying to get her attention. “Sienna! Safety first! Please find a seat!”
Sienna quickly looks down and takes the seat beside her, the plane lurching up the seat to meet her as she tumbles in, fumbling with her belt.
Next to her a girl sits still as a statue, face drawn tight. Skin pale as she doesn’t turn, face forward as she clings to the arms of the seat.
“Just Breathe, it’ll pass.” Sienna says, trying to channel the courage she’s seen in the pilot, Sean behind them, and even the spooky girl in the back.
“This can’t happen… not yet… it’s too soon…” she manages out. Her chest rising and falling shallowly, not breathing well. Cold sweat making her long red hair cling to her face and neck.
Biting her lip, Sienna gets an idea then smiles, “hey, why couldn’t the melons get married?”
“wha… what? I.. have no idea?” she stammers. Looking over at her for the first time.
“Because they Cantaloupe!” Sienna grins in a cheeky fashion. She stares back at her blankly for several long moments before speaking “Because… they can’t elope! That is the dumbest joke I’ve ever heard.” She attempts it stifle a giggle, but fails breaking out into the most infectious laughter Sienna had ever heard. ‘mission accomplished’ Sienna smiled to herself.
“Are you positively mad? This isn’t the time for jokes!” Aleister snarls.
Sienna is about to give a sharp retort when the girl interrupts “no, this is the perfect time for jokes!” she smiles back at Sienna sweetly, taking her hand, color returning to her face as she is breathing normal again, the din seeming to fade for the moment around them.
“I’m Quinn.”
“Sienna.”
Outside the blasts of wind, lightning and energy is reaching a fevered pitch.
“I think we’re almost out… hold on!” Jake grits out. Knuckles white as he works the yoke hard, trying to hold course, feathering the blades to stop them from spinning.
An eternally long moment later they break out into a clear dazzling blue sky.
“whohooooo! We’re alive!” the big fellow, Raj bellows out, fist pumping the air as other cheers and applause or signs of relief fill the air.
“Sienna look… there it is!” Quinn says looking out the window.
“Get a good look now cause we’re coming in fast” Jake calls back. “Welcome to La Huerta!”
Outside seeming to rise mythically out of the sea is a large island covered in rich emerald green life, glistening streams and long beaches, dominated by a massive mountain volcano in the center, a column of white steam rising into the air.
“La Huerta Tower this King Air X-ray Charlie Delta Mike Kilo requesting emergency priority to land!”
Jake waits several long moments with no response as he maneuvers the gliding craft towards the airport.
“Carlos! Pick up you lazy bastard. It’s Jake!”
Nothing…
“Ignoring me won’t make me forget the hundred bucks you owe me. Like it or not we’re coming in.”
A while later, smooth as glass the plane sails into the airport. Landing roughly on the dirt runway and coasting fast Jake jigs it into the empty hanger then stops.
If anyone had been a pilot they would have noticed the remarkable skill that took with out power but alas for Jake. No one seems to have cared at this point. “Meh” he mutters. Unhooking his headset and shutting down the systems.
One by one the passengers descend the stairs and into the warm tropical sunshine.
…..
And now same scene in the Journal.
……
So after that we noticed that the flight was taking longer than expected so I went up to check what was up with our pilot.
On the way met some of the other ten winners talking with our tour guide, Lila. Who might I add is… ok remember “tour guide Barbie” from Toy Story 2? Yeah that’s her. Perky and sunny as a Pina Colada. Great… now I want one.
Ok so anyway I go to ask the pilot and….. he’s totally asleep. Yep. Feet on dash, head on chest. And probably I would have flipped out if… if it wasn’t for the fact that I got distracted by the fact that HE was the beach-boy soldier in my dream earlier. Yep. Well… that and the fact of that southern drawl, blue eyes and that smile…
Oh yeah and apparently he gives nicknames to people that annoy him. So I’m “Princess”
Honesty, I… kinda like it. And because he seriously looks the part of a scruffy ranger I called him Aragorn.
Yeah and I may have a crush on him too… did I mention those eyes? He’s like, part Han Solo, part Aragorn, part Colonel Jack O’Neill from SG-1.
Anyway, right after that things got… scary like, frickin’ terrifying.
This big, black storm front hits, and throws me into a wall. And its bad. Like fire ball lightning and deafening thunder, Armageddon like bad.
I kinda got the sequence of things a little jumbled in my memory, honestly for the first half of it I just clung to a seat in shock, taking it all in ‘till Lila shook me out of it and helped me to a seat.
Somewhere in there the plane got hit and the engines died, people screaming and all that. All but one. There’s this girl with us, with a blue hoodie and she’s got a scar across one eye and has these dark eyes. There’s something off about her not like… bad just… she wasn’t afraid. if anything she looked… determined.
So yeah pretty much beside her it was Jake, he’s the pilot and Sean that kept their wits about them. The girl in the seat next to me, she… she looked worse then me at this point. About to have a panic attack. I cracked a joke like, a bad one, you know. The Cantaloupe one. Yeaaah… hey I did pretty good for short notice!
Anyway, I think it helped. Cause, like she laughed and started breathing again. And let me tell you… that laugh. Her grin. Okay yeah we helped eachother keep our nerves. She held my hand tight as did I in return.
Oh her name is Quinn and you have got to me her. Bright, bubbly, long sweeping red hair… looks like a Disney princess. And just as easy to be with.
Okay fine I like her too. A lot. Do I sound desperate?
Like… three people I’ve just met and I wanna spend more time with them? Maybe it’s the air here. Magical.
Okay I digressed. So somewhere after that Jake breaks us out of that storm and its as brilliant blue as it was before. Like… almost never happened. Except for the engines still being dead as you and I after that party Kaitlyn and her roomies threw last semester.
Honestly? Jake is one hellova damn good pilot. Like Tom Hanks in the movie Sully good.
He, without engines, got us on the ground AND parked in a hanger, coasting through it all. No one answered at the tower though. Which was spooky and it gets weirder later on.
But he got us down in one piece, and Oh My god this island is STUNNING! Green as an emerald gem from the air, caught a glimpse of crystal rivers and waterfalls on the way in and this big ol’ smoking volcano in the middle.
**** Feed back please! Thanks all!
