broke: when farkle is being considered for an aspergers diagnosis (something which was already outdated and not in the dsm when the episode came out 7 years ago) everyone acts like he's on his deathbed because god forbid their friend be autistic and not quirky
woke: when farkle is being considered for an autism diagnosis riley and maya celebrate because riley's autistic/adhd and maya's also adhd (they met in special ed in third grade) and they'd been joking that farkle's the token neurotypical for like 4 years now and lucas joining the friend group upset the balance but now the balance is restored. there can only be one neurotypical. lucas is vaguely uncomfortable but rolls with it because he thinks riley and maya's excitement at farkle's diagnosis is cute

anyway thinking back to riley though. she was done incredibly dirty by the writers in a lot of ways. like i know we discussed at length the 'maya became riley' storyline (which.... another day) but we don't discuss how they belittled riley so, so much and never offered her a chance to grow in the eyes of those around her. her parents weren't even good parents to her lmao and a lot of their dismissive nature is brushed off for gags and giggles which is crazy. peak riley moments that come to mind were her in girl meets stem. in stem she's the brilliant riley who's top of the class right next to farkle and we can see why. she's brave, loud, proud, and refuses to be belittled and i needed more of that. anyway fuck you michael jacobs
#see everyone coddled riley so much that when she finally went out into the world and didn't immediately shed the persona she crafted during#that time she was insufferable and as lucas would say 'too much'#the world was sunshine and rainbows and no one allowed her to think otherwise because they had a whole thing to stunt her growth!!!!#you're telling me a caring and intelligent person would be like that? she wasn't even topanga weird at times it was just like get a grip!#a lot of the lessons she kept learning were things she'd already learned and it was o#nvm season 3 lowkey being a mess with storylines left and right cause they made up so much and allowed that damned triangle to consume the#show#realistically with their friendship maya and riley would've ditched the triangle AGES ago and focused on something else#it'd be a long time before they'd address it again and by that point their feelings for him would've either grown or faded which would've#been a great indicator because maya and riley would not have let themselves do that!!1#topanga should not have allowed her daughter (and riley bc it's a joke to even call riley topanga's daughter at this point) to be in that#situation for as long as she was! feelings are complicated but hello your daughter's pride and feelings shouldn't be messed with like that#and it clearly negatively influenced everyone involved or not so what did we end up with!! they were to cocky and thought they would get s4#which would've helped them continue to flatten the triangle discourse as they had attempted those last few episodes#and instead we're left with an ambiguous and unsatisfying ending#and riley not growing much at all!!!!!!!!!!#i'm screaming!!!!#realistically we would've seen riley try to rise and stay on top right with smackle and farkle but we didn't and ugh#tag: i speakth

OK I'm sorry, I'm back with this same monologue again because the wording here. "found out I was gonna have a chance", not found out you liked me, no, not found out about Maya's feelings. He was gonna have a chance, as if he'd thought about it before, considered the possibility, but ultimately decided he didn't have a chance. And we do know from season 1, that he did consider it, from the conversation he had with Farkle about asking one of them out, where he asked Farkle about what he'd do if he asked each of them out. But that seemed more hypothetical, until now. He wanted a chance with her and never thought he'd get it, but he did... and he gave it up. Like, you can't tell me this man doesn't or didn't ever have feelings for Maya, that he only ever liked Riley, because the wording here suggests otherwise, and I feel like most people have accepted that, yes, Maya's feelings for Lucas were genuine and Maya turning into Riley was a cop out. I genuinely believe Maya and Lucas's characters would've ended up together eventually.
I feel like it's a shame Lucas didn't ask more questions when she told him he'd picked Riley either way, because season 1 or 2 Lucas would've shut that down and been like no that's absolute nonsense, you're you. Like the fact everyone just went along with that is insane. They made her feel bad for developing as a person and being happy and forced her to go back to how she was before. That's just sad. Could you imagine if anyone but Riley did this? I feel like Riley only got away with this because she's Riley. And to be clear I don't hate Riley, I don't think she had bad intentions here, but Riley has been shown to dislike change, and that could apply even if that change is good. I don't think Riley really considered how much of Maya's change came from the fact her home life, her personal situation had changed. Because Riley's always had a loving family and frineds that support and protect her, so she doesn't quite realise how much that would change for someone who never really had it. An the Matthews did try to treat Maya like one of the family, and while I do think Maya wanted to be part of the family, I don't think she ever truly believed she was. They were a family, but they weren't her family. And a lot of what Lucas said, if i remember that scene correctly, came from before she "became Riley" so no he didn't pick Riley either way. We'll never know who he picked by the end of that episode. But, either way, whoever he picked, he chose them because of who they were.
Also I genuinely feel like the season 1 and 2 versions of most of these characters would punch their season 3 versions in the face, but none more so than Riley who would never stand for anyone talking to her best friend the way Riley does in season 3. Even late season 2, not yet in a love triangle but clearly heading that way Riley would destroy season 3 "you became me" Riley. This season only really happens if everyone is put of character which they were

So, I went back and rewatched Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World (at the same time). Heres the thoughts:
I watched Girl Meets World before (when it came out in like middle school/high school; I’m in college now so it’s been a while) and since I’m a Boy Meets World fan I thought I would go back and rewatch it.
Boy Meets World is amazing. The storylines, the characters, everything else; I will always love that show and I often rewatch it.
Girl Meets World is 95% hot fucking garbage. Like I get it’s a Disney channel show- it’s not going to be the greatest thing ever- but good god this is a mess. The writers didn’t really get to tell the story they wanted because of Disney, at least I hope that’s what happened instead of actually thinking that this would be on the same level as Boy Meets World.
—————-
The 5% of the show I enjoyed was:
- Eric’s episodes
- Eric and Tommy’s reunion
- Eric and Jack’s reunion
- Seeing more of Cory and Topanga’s relationship
- Some of Shawn’s episodes
- Some of Farkle, Smackle, or Maya’s scenes (definitely not a lot of them though)
- Stuart Minkus’ appearances (and Jennifer too)
- Feeny and the other original characters making cameos too
———-
The rest of Girl Meets World I kinda hated.
For example:
- they did Angela dirty (like, wtf? They acted like she wasn’t close friends with Cory, Topanga, and the other characters before she left in Boy Meets World; it seemed like they made some of the characters mad at her (Riley) for no reason at all, she did nothing wrong in my opinion. And I would have loved to see more of her, like as an Aunt to Riley and Auggie or something)
- they did Jack dirty too (he would’ve definitely stayed in contact with at least Eric and Shawn, being as close as they were on Boy Meets World. And why wasn’t he at Shawn’s wedding? Also, we should’ve seen more of him after the semi formal episode, and jeric should have happened)
- no Rachel appearances (I would have loved to see her again, and she did stay in contact with Eric, as mentioned in the show, so she could’ve come back)
- the annoying ass Riley, Maya, Lucas love triangle
- the fact that they still didn’t make jeric happen (I need them to happen. They would be so cute! Just look at them:⬇️)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
- Mr Turner not having more scenes (I hated that he wasn’t at Shawn’s wedding- like we knew he was in NYC, he could’ve been there- and that he wasn’t in more scenes, especially ones with Shawn)
- the whole “Maya is turning into Riley and they have to stop it” arc. (It was- like the love triangle- annoying, long, and unnecessary. And people do change in high school- and often do a full 180 to their personality; I know I did, and on the Boy Meets World universe Harley Kenner did too. I didn’t even notice the change until it was outright said on the show, and I think the characters discouraging this was just wrong. Yes, Maya did change a lot throughout the show, but that is good. It shows growth, it shows a character arc, that her life is getting brighter and she has more hope, and I still saw Maya as the same character at that point. Anyway, I think that this whole arc was just bad, but I think that Maya still was a good character- she was just poorly written sometimes)
And let’s not forget the two biggest reasons I hate this sequel:
- Joshaya (that relationship was creepy as hell now that I’ve watched the show as an adult, in middle school I didn’t really see why people disliked it, but now I get it. I mean at the end of the series Josh is a FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE (around 18) and Maya is a FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL (around 14 or 15), them doing what they do on the show is illegal. And Josh saying that he’ll “play the long game” too and wait for her? Ew. Just ew. That makes it so much worse; it implies that he’s waiting until she’s 18 or in college and that’s just disturbing and disgusting for a Disney channel show and in general. Overall: Joshaya is gross and illegal and should’ve never been a thing and other characters should not have encouraged it on the show)
- “Girl Meets Farkle” (the infamous autism focused episode. I loved the fact that it had representation for autism, but I hated the way this episode was handled and written. This was by far the worst part of the show for me. I hated the way that some of the characters (Riley, Maya, Lucas) reacted when Farkle said he might be autistic. They acted like it was some horrible thing to be autistic, (which- as a human being and recently diagnosed person with autism- I found offensive) seriously they acted like autism was going to kill him (I’m not joking, that’s how they reacted) and they even went as far as to make Farkle mask who he was in one scene when Farkle said that he identified with some signs of autism. Like, all he wanted was support from his friends when he was getting tested and figuring things out, and all he got was hate from them. And I hate that other characters (and the writers of the show) didn’t see this too and change things or put a stop to it. They also used some outdated language to describe the spectrum on the show, which didn’t help things at all. For a lot of people and viewers, this was the first time they really learned about or saw anything about the spectrum and autism and this is just a horrible way to learn about this. Additionally, I loved Smackle’s whole story and telling how she got diagnosed, but I hated how some characters (Riley and sometimes Maya) treated her throughout the show. As an example: Smackle, as shown in the series, doesn’t often like hugs or physical contact (like me sometimes) and she makes it known, but Riley still fucking tries to hug her constantly and it’s so irritating! I know that if I was having a moment like that, as I often do, and someone tried to hug me like that I would be very uncomfortable and upset, so this whole thing they do with those interactions on the show just pisses me off. Overall: this episode of the show was offensive and horrifying, mostly because of the way the show frames autism and the way that the other characters react to Farkle and his potential diagnosis and Smackle with her actual diagnosis.
—————
In conclusion to my long ass rant:

Lucaya COULD have been endgame, but here's why it wasn't.
To put it simply: Disney.
It's well known that Disney doesn't often allow more than 2-3 seasons and with the complex plot ideas that Girl Meets World wanted to cover... that's not enough time. I believe if the writers had more time, Lucaya could have been pushed, but because it was limited, the writers ultimately decided to go the easy route and just stick with the "original" pairings Rucas and I say this loosely-- Joshaya since they didn't have much time left for build-up and storytelling. The rushed writing really shows on the last episodes of the last season because of how illogically they played Lucaya off (this post hits the nail on the head as to why it was badly done).
When It comes to filtering , Disney does it best and it really showed with Lucaya's campfire scene aka supposed-to-be kiss that was took out because of Disney's one kiss rule. Disney is extremely basic when it comes to romance and they always go for the more simple fairytale type-of love stories like Rucas because of its younger audience and according to Peyton the writers also took the feedback very seriously. Meanwhile Lucaya was more mature, realistic, and complicated. It doesn't help that Girl Meets World was already deemed too mature and unrelatable for Disney's audience at the time which is one of the reasons it was canceled despite its success in ratings.
They could have made Lucaya "endgame" but between the way Riley's character was written, Disney's filtering, and many other things, it would have required too much de-tangling for the short time frame that the writers would have had to work out the kinks. So, the ending would have still felt rushed and left people unsatisfied no matter what due to Disney imo. Had another network picked up Girl Meets World, I think Lucaya would have had a better chance of happening and would have been handled with more care. Although I do believe the writers would have went through with Lucaya had the circumstances been different, I also believe they held themselves back with Riley being the main character and heavily leaning on the nostalgia Boy Meets World by wanting her to have an ending similar to Cory's.
And this is absolutely no hate to Rowan because I believe Riley wasn't a very strong or interesting main character as it is, but Sabrina really stole the spotlight. Peyton even talked about how he and Sabrina had a lot of on-screen chemistry and were the closest out of the cast at the time. In Peyton's words "I think the writers wanted it to be Lucas and Maya" and I definitely agree. There's many theories about why they added a Lucaya romance arc into the show if they were just going to stick to the original plan, but I believe Lucaya could and would have been worked into the show given it was on a different network, had more seasons/episodes, and if the writers were able to make up their mind (because according the Peyton they had a hard time choosing Riley or Maya and chose the safer option lol). Or it simply never would have happened had Sabrina and Peyton not been chosen to play Lucas and Maya.

what do you think of the whole maya having «turned in to» riley thing?? do u think there is truth in that, or do you think she just changed on her own and people started implying that her growth was just the copycat effect of being around riley so much?? ive never really been sure what i think of that whole thing!?! i feel like it might be a mix of both, but that they were wayyyyy to dramamtic about her not being «herself» anymore, like people change, thats what we do, it doesn’t always mean we have «lost ourselves» like they told maya she had. what do you think? 💖💖💖💖💖
Hello! Thank you for sending this, because there’s a lot to be said, so let’s get into it!

To answer your question, it’s a mixture of yes and no. The reason why I say yes is because, if you can, rewatch girl meets world of terror 2. The scene where riley and maya empty their brains (that whole animation scene), it really tells a lot without explicitly saying it. Maya’s head was full of rileys, “don’t do this” “be like me”, and whatever else she said (it’s been a while since I’ve seen it). But that is why I say yes. This triangle situation was really taking an emotional toll on Maya, and she needed someone to just give her a little nudge back to who she was after girl meets hurricane. She just needs someone to restore the hope in her, and the hope that everything would turn out how it was supposed to. However, the only person who could do that (*cough* Lucas *cough*) was off figuring out his own feelings and he wasn’t able to see Maya’s crisis in time. By the time he realized what was happening, Maya was back in Mayaville and she wouldn’t listen to him, hence why she stepped back from him in girl meets true maya. The only person who was around was Riley and even though it was unintentional on her part, she pushed Maya back into who she’s always seen, which is a Maya who is upset with herself because she thinks she’s the reason why her father left, someone who didn’t have hope, and that’s not who Maya was anymore. Riley couldn’t see that because she wasn’t in a place where she could actually see that she and Lucas weren’t the end all, be all. That there was a chance that Lucas and Maya had something real, and that the feelings she thought she had for Lucas were actually for someone else (can you guess who? Lol).
The reason why I say no is because in girl meets triangle, when maya’s crisis is in full effect, she’s still thinking about the decision that has to be made and that they need to include Lucas because he’s a part of it. However, Riley doesn’t want to hear it because she’s not ready. I fully believe that the triangle dragged as long as it did because Riley wasn’t ready, Maya wanted to make sure Riley was happy, and Lucas didn’t want to hurt either of the girls, plus he was still figuring out his feelings for each of them. Like I said before, Maya was emotionally stuck, because she was worried about Riley, while also trying to deal with her deep feelings for Lucas. I don’t know if she realized how deep her feelings actually were, but we all could see that her feelings were very different from Riley’s. So, she was going through all of that, and trying to hang on to the hope she got since the middle-to end of season 2. That’s a lot to go through emotionally, so she did go a bit into rileytown, her hair and outfits say so. But she wasn’t as far in as Riley thinks she was. She never “became riley”, she was still very herself, just with hope and confidence (plus a new wardrobe, curtesy of Shawn).
Michael Jacobs called season 3 the “season of feelings”. Seasons 1 and 2 were friendship and growth. Riley and Maya’s friendship wouldn’t have survived if Lucas and Maya got together before Riley was ready. Like Cory said, “feelings can tear apart friendship and growth”. At the end of the day, girl meets world was about Riley, Maya, and their friendship. Since Riley wasn’t near the level of growth Maya was at, it was unfortunately Maya’s growth that had to be diminished to save the friendship. But the best part about growth is that it can be restored, which we started to see in girl meets IDo. And who helped lead Maya down that path again? The same person who helped her gain hope, and if we would’ve gotten our season 4, we would’ve continued to see that growth.
Also, if you realized it, Riley did start to grow during the back half of season 3. Because after ski lodge, what happened with Riley and Lucas’ relationship? Barely anything right? That’s because as Michael Jacobs said, in ski lodge part 2, the characters made the “wrong decisions”. That means that by Lucas choosing Riley, he made the wrong decision. Now how would we know how a character makes the right decision, look at girl meets goodbye. When Topanga was trying to figure out what to do about London, Eric told her to find her quiet place, which turned out to be Topanga’s. She sat there and made the right decision, which was to stay. Now, another character also sat in a quiet place to think about a decision. Can you guess who it was?
Lucas!
In girl meets upstate, he went to the bay window to wait for the girls to tell them his decision, and he sat there for quote “5 hours”. Who did he decide on? We never got to find out because maya didn’t give him the chance to, but given the context, the answer was Maya. Topanga was able to say what her decision was, Lucas didn’t, and in turn he wasn’t given the chance to say the right decision (Maya) and therefore made the wrong decision (Riley).
Now getting back to what I had said earlier, in the back half of season 3, Riley and Lucas barely interacted. That was because (and remember, this is just based on my observation), since Lucas and Riley had pushed one another to the level of growth that they could, they couldn’t help each other anymore. They needed other people (Maya and Farkle respectively), to push them further. Riley didn’t realize it yet, but she was starting to outgrow Lucas and if we got our fourth season, we would’ve seen Riley realize that Lucas wasn’t who she made him to be, and she then would’ve looked back at everything and seen that while her intentions were good, she was wrong about a lot, and from there, would’ve been on her own journey of growth.
I know this post got out of hand, but there is a lot of complexity to these characters. But I hope this helped answer your question, and please feel free to ask me again, if you need clarification on anything I’ve said!

Going back to our roots here what’s your brutally honest opinion about lucaya and joshaya if you’re up for some throwbacks
this message physically aged me 45 years 😭
lucaya- like, it was obviously planned from the beginning, but here's the thing: their dynamic was tired as hell. you see it in every piece of media ever. they were BORING. also I just genuinely almost never liked lucas lmfao. there were a handful of lines throughout 3 seasons that got a laugh out of me- and it was always when he was playing the idiot or confused part, if they had just let him be the wannabe eric of the show it could have been amazing. as for maya, I definitely wasn't as attached to her as I was riley, she just kinda got on my nerves a bit, but Dear God Did She Deserve Better. the triangle was drawn out WAY too long. by the end of it both girls should have left lucas in the dust. we see the 'official' triangle plotline start on new years eve, and end in late september/early october. in no world should it have taken him that long, ESPECIALLY when he knew what a strain it was putting on the girls relationship. if he really cared he would have stepped back, like, literally, it is very very possible to have feelings for someone and not date them, oh my God. farkle had the girls fighting over him ONE time and was like 'hey no I love you guys too much to see you upset'. lucas friar you will always be hated<3
joshaya- I need to get this out of the way because I saw it so much: maya was not trying to date josh when she snuck into the college party. the college girls were not telling josh to date maya. one of josh's friends hits on maya and riley and maya said We Are In Eighth Grade. she's not delusional. the whole episode was how she wanted josh to stop ignoring her. there's subtext ladies!!! cory and topanga were practically raising maya since she was 5. even if it's not addressed too well on screen, you have to be aware that maya and josh have known each other practically their whole lives. considering how close josh is with cory, riley, and auggie, that tells us he saw the family on a regular basis growing up (he literally left his parents and took a train at like 4 in the morning just so cory could open his college letter with him). so josh and maya were likely good friends as children! what we see with his introduction to the show is he starts treating her more as a kid, as his niece's friend, and thinks her feelings are silly and she says No. I need you to take me seriously here. I don't want our friendship to change just because you're in college now. my feelings are not stupid and I want you to respect me. (also. side note. they never said josh's age in the show right?? because for him to start college when he did would make him older than he should have been based on the boy meets world timeline...like, I was kinda working under the assumption he skipped a grade or two in high school but everyone else was like Known Grown Man And Pedophile Josh Matthews Asked A Toddler To Go To The Movies As Friends lmfao). anyway. she asks him to respect her and he does!!! genuine shock and awe! lucas friar found dead in a ditch! lmao. their vague 'let's see how we feel in a few years' talk reminded me a lot of the cory/topanga yearbook quote scene, and they had great chemistry! it didn't feel like something I've seen a thousand times before. it's not like they promised to swear off dating and wait for her 18th birthday, she was basically dating zay by the end of the show. they just said 'we've known each other for a while, there's definitely something between us but this isn't the right time for us to explore it, so let's be friends like we used to' (see: what lucas should have done during the triangle). josh had a tiny bit of an edge to him, but with the dorky matthews heart, which tbh was exactly what maya wanted. I loved how maya acted around josh, it lead to some of her funniest and most open moments in the show. I loved how gentle josh was with her even when she was being annoying. I love a good childhood crush to actual lovers story! sue me! lmao I think if the show had gotten as many seasons as boy meets world they really could have been something special

*cracks knuckles*
Alright, I may get shot down completely for this but I think most of the Girl Meets World fans COMPLETELY MISUNDERSTAND the love triangle.
Now I know that sounds like an exaggeration but trust me with all the posts I've seen about it, it very much is not.
All of the people saying lucaya should've been endgame are 100% missing how the love triangle happened and even the end results, which were that Maya and Lucas didn't even like each other in that way.
The entire triangle stems from Maya's identity crisis where she loses herself and becomes more like Riley, and when she becomes like Riley she starts to experience Riley's feelings for Lucas to make sure he's good for her. And because she's becoming like Riley and also Riley saying her and Lucas are "siblings" (they are not), Lucas starts liking Maya as well.
The whole resolution to the triangle is Maya refinding herself and realizing that she never liked Lucas romantically, and Lucas realizing that he likes Riley, always has and always will, and he only liked Maya because she was Riley at the time.
And at the end of the day it doesn't even matter, because the real point was to show that no matter what they go through, Riley and Maya are still best friends and will always be best friends and will always be there for each other.
Also I feel like I should mention how Josh fits into this because that is also a thing that people get wrong. Josh isn't the bad guy in this situation, and Maya isn't wrong to like him. Three years isn't a very big age gap, especially when Maya is much more mature than her age would typically be. And Josh isn't a groomer for saying he'll wait, either. I know some people have big issues with that, but to me it's a really sweet and smart way to go about things and not any kind of evil or irredeemable action.
(For the record, I'm not anti- any of the ships here. I'm not anti-lucaya, anti-joshaya, anti-rucas, or even anti-riarkle. I don't care what you ship, I just want people to understand this story and why things ended up how they did in regards to these ships and characters)
(Also for the record, I am open to this starting a respectful discussion in reblogs/comments, but please keep it respectful and don’t turn this into any kind of flame war)

Maya Hart for the character asks? <3
• My NOTP for them: Josh Fucking Matthews. I'm sorry, no I'm not, but there is no reason why a freshman in college should be wanting to date a middle schooler. Like he did turn her down in s1, but then s3...
• My BROTP for them: Riley, Smackle, Farkle, Lucas, and Zay <3 Also Sage! She should've at least been a recurring character.
• My OTP for them: Lucas!!!
• My second choice pairing for them: Riley and Zay <3333
• My fluffy pairing for them: Riley (all of them tbh)
• My angsty pairing for them: Lucas (also all)
• My favorite poly ship for them: Zay/Maya/Lucas, Riley/Maya/Smackle, Zay/Maya/Riley
• My weirdest pairing for them: Her and Chai (the girl from girl meets she don't like me) would be fun. Or her with Smackle, and there was another girl she interacted with in girl meets she don't like me

I've been reading a lot of Lucaya fics lately, and one thing that has really struck me is a lot of writers' shared assertion that Maya never would have forgiven Lucas and it wouldn’t have worked out initially if he had chosen her over Riley, because while Maya could take the heartbreak and continue being friends, Riley would not have been able to handle the jealousy and perceived betrayal (because she feels like she is entitled to Lucas, for a variety of reasons), and both Maya and Lucas’s and Maya and Riley’s relationships would have imploded.
And with what we have seen of Riley's behavior (accusing Maya of turning into her and telling her to stop) when Maya gets good things in her life (passing grades, crush on a nice boy, new clothes, more positive outlook on life, etc.) this seems like a very likely outcome. As much as I would have wanted Riley and Maya to overcome these issues and preserve their friendship, Riley's emotional immaturity, tendency toward jealousy/insecurity, and savior-complex in their relationship is something that desperately needed to be dealt with on the show. Which we will never get, both because the show was canceled and because the writers were cowards who didn’t want to acknowledge Riley's many privileges in life, as well as her flaws.
Riley and Maya's friendship could not have survived Lucas choosing Maya.
Did Lucas realize this? Was that part of why he went along with it when Maya pushed him toward Riley? It seems likely.
