MAIN MASTERLIST

Shoulder shimmying had never been so hard, but Y/N seemed to have finally gotten down the choreo to ITZY's 'Wannabe', the members of Stray Kids seeming to think so too. They had just been looking around for a room to practice in when they came across their young trainee friend, who they hadn't seen for a while due to their busy schedule.

A small applause sounded from behind Y/N, making her jump as she saw the door open and Stray Kids clapping for her.

"Ah! Hello sunbaenims!" Y/N blushed and bowed politely. She wasn't expecting to see them there, so absorbed into practising for her next showcase.

"Hi there!"

"Annyeong!"

"Wow!"

They all let out greetings as they walked over excitedly to Y/N.

"How has everything been? It's been a while since we saw you," Jeongin smiled widely at Y/N, trying to ease the obvious nerves he saw from her.

"Have you been practicing regularly? Your dancing has improved a lot," Changbin nodded his head in approval.

"Ah, you really think I've improved?! Yeah I've been practising a lot these days..." Y/N bashfully admitted, rubbing her sweaty palms on her leggings. Was it from exercising or from nerves? She wasn't quite so sure herself.

"We can see that. You're better at dancing and freestyling than us now," Lee Know laughed, praising the younger girl jokingly, but there was still a hint of seriousness to it that showed Y/N he was proud of her, and that helped her relax more.

"Maybe one day even Jisung will be jealous of your dancing skills," Felix laughed, causing the quokka like man to look over at him with a mock appalled face.

"Haha maybe I'll take his place as the ace," Y/N smirked, feeling comfortable enough to joke around with them. It wasn't a regular occurrence that she saw the boys but everytime she did, she was soon able to fall back into a relaxed state where it felt like she had known them forever.

"No way! You will never be as talented as me!" Jisung smirked back, yet he couldn't help but goofily smile back at her as he ruffled her hair.

"Well, we're glad you're practicing so hard. Would you like to have some fried chicken with us?" Seungmin piped up, his eagle eyes noticing that she only seemed to have some water in the room with her. Plus, he remembered what it was like being a trainee, and an offer of fried chicken would not be one to be turned down.

"Oh sure! If there's enough to go around!" Y/N clasped her hands together excitedly.

"Of course there's enough food! We're so proud of all your progress by the way, we can tell how hard you've been working, Y/Nnie," Chan praised her, as they all sat down together on the floor.

"Here, eat up," Hyunjin passed over a box of fried chicken to Y/N from the bags of fast food they had.

"Just remember to take a lot of rest too," Jisung commented genuinely, yet anyone could tell he, as well as the other members were very much so enthralled with the heaven sent food in front of them.

"Don't worry I do!" Y/N rushed out, before taking a bite of the fried chicken and wiggling slightly as she did a happy dance.

"You're so cute when you're excited!" Felix giggled as he saw her.

"That's exactly what Channie hyung does," Seungmin laughed along.

There was a moment of peaceful eating before Chan kept up the conversation.

"Oh yeah, we wanted to ask you something! Are you good at rapping?" Chan wondered, wiping his hands on a napkin.

"Well, I don't want to brag but I think I'm pretty good," Y/N shrugged, she had practiced enough and knew she was at JYP for a reason, and her talents certainly didn't go to waste when it came to rapping.

"Oh yeah? You actually rap too? I had no idea. Have you tried writing your own lyrics before?" Changbin got excited at the prospect of hearing Y/N rap.

"I'm not as confident in writing rap lyrics as I am in singing them if that makes sense?" Y/N explained, hoping it was understandable.

"I get what you mean. You must be very talented though since you can sing so well," Lee Know wondered.

"Do you happen to write your own songs too or do you learn songs from other artists?" Chan asked, interested in what her identity as a future artist would be.

"Oh I like to write my own songs too!" Y/N beamed. Now that, was an area she was proud of herself for.

"Really? Can you play one of your original songs for us?" Hyunjin said in a shocked tone, head tilting slightly in disbelief but wanting to hear her sing nonetheless.

The boys all stared at her in anticipation.

"Oh, sure... If you really want me to," Y/N became nervous again, because this was Stray Kids! Yes they felt like her friends but to sing her own personal works in front of them was still nerve wracking.

"Yes, we really want you to!" Jeongin encouraged her, offering that same reassuring smile as he did earlier.

All of the members were now eagerly waiting for her.

"Ok, here's a chorus I wrote recently," Y/N finally nodded, making the boys even more excited as she began to sing.

"Oh it's in my bones.

Hereditarily alone.

Surrounded by people,

But that gives no meaning.

It's in my bones."

The boys stared in in wonder, thinking the words were so beautiful and they loved the emotion she put into it even for such a small snippet of the song.

"Her voice is amazing..." Hyunjin was in awe.

"Yeah, you have a really good vocal tone!" Jisung clapped.

"And you wrote that yourself?" Chan smiled like a proud dad.

"Can we hear more?" Changbin said hopefully, nudging Y/N playfully.

"Well, I think I should now that I've sang a teaser for you," Y/N beamed, and for the next couple of minutes she sang the rest of the song to the boys. She even played a small backing track which consisted of an acoustic guitar, simple but sweet, building up towards the end of the song.

"I can't wait to see you debut!" Felix clapped with the other boys.

"You really will steal everyone's hearts, Y/N, you'll go far," Chan said, a big smile adorning his face as everyone offered their comments and praises to Y/N.

"Just don't let it get to your head," Lee Know joked, causing his members to whack him playfully and tell Y/N to not listen to him anymore.

"Thank you guys, it really means a lot."

So, I have tomorrow (today) off, and I’m spending Thanksgiving alone this year, but I figured it’s the perfect time to try and watch a few more Ateez videos!

I’m gonna keep this post saved and add to it as I watch more. For context, I’m sticking with their music videos for now. After I’ve seen all of them, I’ll move on to all the songs without videos and so on. (Okay, I ended up watching some tonight, so this is post 1 and tomorrow, I’ll make a post 2!)

Also, just in case I haven’t made it super obvious. I’m pretty new to these guys, for the most part. I’ve seen them pop up here or there, but I genuinely don’t know that much about them. If there’s anything I should know, any issues the fandom has, if I mess up, etc, let me know. I don’t want to offend anyone here, or get things really wrong.

In this post, I talk about my thoughts on Hala Hala, Promise, Illusion, Wave, Aurora, and Wonderland. I had to stop after Wonderland, because it was a lot, lmao.

Hala Hala - This is the 4th official video I’ve watched (technically 5th, but I’ve decided to pretend I haven’t seen anything else). I love it. I enjoyed the first three, for the most part, but this was the first one where I was like, hell yea. I can’t say that I understand the story line at all yet, but I’m still new, hopefully I’ll learn, lmao.

But yea, since I’m still not 100% great with knowing who is who (although I’m almost there!), I actually loved the masks and not really knowing who was who. Eventually, I’ll look it up to find out who sings what because the singing in this one was stunning.

Promise - I had to pause this one a minute in so that I could say this before I forget: Wooyoung’s voice would fit in with any 90s boy band. I can’t explain it exactly, but it just would. Thank you. Let me continue.

Okay, I’m back. So, I love the setting! I looked in the comments and it looks like this was filmed in Moscow, which is stunning. I loved that it had a performance video feel and a street version feel.

Also, listen. I’m...I’m loyal to Seo Changbin, okay. His rapping is just *chefs kiss* perfection, but ...Hongjoong is so charismatic. Like, he’s my current favorite in the group, but that may change, it’s too early to tell.

I have no idea what the song is about, as there were no English captions, but I’ll look it up later. It was good. Also, not even gonna comment on how great Jongho is here, I already knew he was talented as hell after that Love Poem performance.

Illusion - I don’t know what to say about this one. I liked it. I could tell it seemed to have a double meaning. Like, it seems like a happy, upbeat song, but the lyrics may not be? This might sound dumb, but I sometimes struggle to pick up on the meanings of some kpop songs with the English translations. That’s my own shortcoming though, not anyone’s fault.

The video was bright and interesting, though, so yea. I don’t have a lot of thoughts on this one.

Wave - Did they just say Hakuna Matata?  ...Yes, yes they did. That’s actually so cute, bye.

Okay, I’m back. This one was so cute! Chill songs are usually not my favorite songs, but I still enjoy them from time to time and I definitely think I’ll enjoy this one. I love that it’s a great summer song, and all the talk of the beach. I grew up near the beach, so it holds a special place in my heart. I’m also always a fan of the video where groups look like they’re having fun. It’s why I love Stray Kids’ street version videos so much, even if the songs themselves aren’t my favorite.

Aurora - Okay, this one confused me at first, I won’t lie. Again, it was the English captions, again, its my fault. But I think it’s about someone being the light in the darkness? Because at first, I thought they were saying that the other person was the darkness and they found the light. Let me know if I’m wrong, lmao.

So, it’s definitely a great song, they all look fantastic in the video and they sound amazing. I don’t think it’s going to be on repeat for me, just because of the style of song and everything, but it’s a really good one. OH. And I loved the choreography here.

Wonderland - Okay, wow, okay. This is the last one for tonight, since I need to breathe after this, lmao.

This one was chaotic and intense. I loved it. It’s scratched that itch in my brain that Stray Kids songs usually scratch.

I will say that it’s a little hard to tell who’s who at times, during the more chaotic scenes, since I’m not 100% used to them yet. But I had the same problem with skz, I’ll figure it out eventually, lmao.

I love how aggressive the choreography is. It looks like they performed this one on some music shows, so I really wanna see the whole choreography, I bet it’s amazing. But yea, really fucking great.

If you've watched their Be behind video, and you've seen Jin talk about how RM complained to him when Tae chose Suga's version over his version you'd know where JK is coming from or where I think he is coming from having JMs version chosen over his.

Watch their Be self interview on yt too.

He said there's a melody he worked on for RM and when Jhope thought he got snubbed he recommended he release it instead- to quench his artistic drive perhaps.

That is why he released this song. He did it for himself. Like he said, he won't put out a song unless he was confident about it.

Suga have said time and again how the music and melodies they create never go to waste because they can repurpose it like he did with Telepathy I think.

Even JK explained he was reserving the melody he made for RM for a future group song.

He could have repurposed this or something.

When Jin talked about V vs JM's Christmas song and kept repeating how much he preferred Jimin's song to Tae's because Jimin"s was bright and upbeat, he made sure to clarify he wasn't implying Tae's song was bad. He was just indicating preference.

I won't lie, I was happy he preferred my bias's song but it made my VMin heart ache a little.

V and JM made very different songs, they shouldn't be compared to eachother in that way.

I don't like competitions. And I don't like when two artists are pit against eachother- which is exactly what these two versions of the bridge is doing out here.

I will literally die if in an interview JM is asked about his part and JK isn't. I can't do this😭

Those saying JM's is better make me sick, and those saying JK's is better make me nauseous. They both great. Point blank purr.

I've been a strong advocate for a certain level of independence and detachment in Jikook's dynamics because they lowkey exhibited codependency tendencies in their dynamics which is great for us shippers but not so great in the long run for their relationship or them as individuals .

Maybe I'm thinking out loud and prematurely here. I mean we are only beginning to have intimate access to their raw unscripted selves.

I don't think it's not that much of a big deal. RM and JM have equally shared their own versions of fake love on the internet but it is an interesting development in their dynamic to me.

I remember how happy JM was about his version of fake love, and it remains to date one of my favorite beats even though he was just spewing nonsense on that track. Lol.

He was so excited when he shared it with JK and Jin. He said when he showed it to JK the first time, JK said he loved it very much- how loving and supportive is that!

This is a red flag for me. And no, it doesn't mean they are broken up or having issues in their relationship.

This is just a sign there's too much independence in their dynamic now- if you know what I mean.

Relationships flourish based on how attached we are to people- too much attachment is a problem, too little attachment is equally bad.

Jikook have always had a problem with over attachment in their dynamics in my opinion, to the point it was lowkey unhealthy- the jealousy, not being able to 'act professionally' within a group and work environment, having problems with being separated however briefly, constantly wanting to be where the other is etc.

Less attachment isnt necessarily a bad thing either. It means less of all the 'toxic' aspects of their relationship that over attachment brings but too much of that too can trigger anxiousness and insecurity and resentment.

Especially if one of them hates change. Cough Jimin.

With that comes all the wild aspects of love such as possessiveness, jealousy and I know JM doesn't do too well in that department...

In my opinion, I see JM as having a problem when JK breathes down his neck emotionally speaking, and at the same time he has a problem when he is too emotionally distant.

All this is interesting to me.

Who do I need to talk to to give me more of Jikook interactions individually or jointly?

I want to see more of their interactions beyond the overly staged, dramatized fanservice and official content.

Spending a lot of time around eachother and eating each other's ramen- pun intended, does not reflect on how intimate you are.

Intimacy requires depth and depth requires attachment.

How you treat eachother's needs and goals, dreams and desires is equally indicative of the intimacy in your relationship.

That has always been one distinctive quality of Jikook's ship.

And so I wonder the thought process that went into this decision. I know JM wouldn't object to JK sharing things like these or doing things that make him happy even if it has the potential to impact his own shine in any way.

Jikook don't compete against eachother.

There’s a rose on Flynn’s desk. There’s a rose on Flynn’s desk. And she has no idea who put it there.

Well- she does know who put it there, she knows that it’s Nick’s job this year to distribute the Valentine’s Day roses and messages, a school tradition that Flynn normally despises and mocks to no end. But someone must have bought the rose, addressed it to her and handed it in and Flynn absolutely cannot fathom who would do that for her.

Definitely not the person she wishes this was from. But now is not the time to think about that.

Almost frantically, she scans the rose for an attached message, or at least an indication about who the sender is.

Nothing. In fact, it looks like the cardboard tag has been ripped off, leaving only the corner with her own name, attached to a piece of string.

“Ooh”, Julie says, waggling her eyebrows, when she spots Flynn puzzling over her flower. “Who’s this from?”

“No idea”, Flynn says, dragging her thumb across the jagged edges of the destroyed tag. “No idea…”

Later in the hallway, Flynn tries her best to stealthily transfer the rose from her backpack into her locker. She fails, obviously, because she when she looks around she catches Carrie blatantly staring at her from a few feet away.

“What?” she snaps, irritably. Yes, Carrie has very clearly been trying to be nicer to both her and Julie, but Flynn is still weary of this new found peace.

She also might be a bit annoyed simply because she got a rose and it isn’t from Carrie.

Immediately, something in Carrie’s posture changes and her face scrunches up.

“Nothing”, she says. “Just wondering who’s stupid enough to send you a rose.”

Flynn feels like she’s been punched in the chest. “What’s that supposed to mean?!” she says incredulously.

“Don’t you hate valentine’s day?” Carrie asks and now Flynn is just confused. Why does she still remember that?

“It’s anonymously”, Julie chimes in unhelpfully. “From a secret admirer”

She sings those last words teasingly, like she’s done all the way through English lesson. Like she has any room to talk with the songs Luke and her write about each other on the daily.

Carrie raises an eyebrow, seemingly unimpressed.

“Someone sent you a rose and didn’t even write their name? That’s so stupid.”

“It’s not-“, Flynn starts and then breaks off. Why does she suddenly feel defensive over this anonymous sender?

“Sounds like a coward to me”, Carrie says with a sickly sweet smile before turning away. “See you in music”, she calls and disappears down the hallway.

“What has made her revert back to demon today?” Julie says, sounding as confused as Flynn feels.

Flynn doesn’t expect any follow up after the rose on Valentine’s Day. It has been fun coming up with more and more wild theories with Julie and the band (the latest being that it’s a ghost who has fallen for Flynn when they saw her setting up the lightshow at the Orpheum), but to Flynn at least it is clear that that was the end of it.

So when she finds a small envelope on her desk the next morning, it takes her a bit to figure out what’s happening here.

Inside, she finds a small piece of paper with, curiously enough, words clearly written by a real typewriter on it.

“She needs to finish this new Dirty Candy song by tomorrow”, Nick explains.

“Yeah and I hate everything I write the second it’s on the page!” Carrie growls, clearly completely lost in whatever she’s dealing with.

The thing is- Flynn is annoyed. But not exactly by the letters. Her secret admirer is sweet and earnest, seems to love music as much as Flynn and all of her friends do and the little poems always brighten her day.

What’s annoying is that she still can’t figure out who this mysterious person with a crush on her is. And that the person she wishes it was is intend on mocking the whole thing to the best of her abilities.

Every time a new note shows up, Carrie is there, ready to tear it into pieces with pointed words and vicious critiques.

Flynn tries to not let it affect her too much. Otherwise, Carrie has been perfectly civil, friendly even and it feels like a bit of their old friendship is restoring, slowly, piece by piece. And what she says about the letters is mostly directed at this person that none of them really know, not at Flynn herself.

It still feels personal, somehow.

It’s when Carrie one day snatches one of the notes right out of Flynn’s hand to call it “embarrassing”, “awkward” and “clumsy”, that something in her just snaps.

“You know what Carrie”, she says, loudly, almost shouting it even, “can you, for once, just keep your unnecessary comments to yourself?”

Almost immediately, Carrie’s arrogant smile falls and Flynn uses the moment of surprise to steal back her piece of paper.

“You’ve been so mean to this person. I don’t know what your issue is here but I need you to back off on the attitude. I might not know who this is from, so I don’t even know if I like whoever is writing these but I like the letters.”

Carrie looks absolutely shocked, completely frozen in place, her jaw clenched tightly. Good.

“Yes, they might not be perfect”, Flynn barrels on, “but they’re honest, and raw and so, so kind and I can tell that they come from the heart and isn’t that the most important thing?!”

Without waiting for an answer, Flynn picks up her bag that she leaned against the lockers when she discovered the note and brushes past Carrie. She knows she’s a bit too worked up, but it has been a trying week.

Only a few moments later she realizes that she saw tears forming in Carrie’s eyes.

In Spanish class, Flynn notices the glaring absence of Carrie in the seat in front of her and a little bit of guilt starts building up inside of her. She has no idea what’s going on, but something clearly is up so after their teacher finally lets them go, Flynn goes on to try and find Carrie.

The music room is one of the first places Flynn thinks of and sure enough, she can hear gentle piano notes and Carrie’s voice singing very quietly drifting through the slightly cracked door.

Before barging in, Flynn stops short when she recognizes parts of the lyrics. Is that- one of the poems she received only a week ago?

Slowly, she tiptoes into the room. What she sees is Carrie, cross-legged at the piano, bent over her notebook full of scribbles that she’s clearly reading from and that somehow contain parts of the poetry that has been a big mystery to Flynn and all of her friends for so long. Just now Carrie’s singing the words that are undeniable not just poems, but song lyrics, and she has added onto them and-

Flynn doesn’t understand anything anymore.

“Carrie!” she says, before she can stop herself. Carrie flinches and bolts away from the piano, the chair clattering down to the floor in the process.

“Flynn”, she breathes, looking terrified.

“I-“, Flynn stutters, “What’s going on? Is this some kind of prank?” She doesn’t think she could take that.

“No!” Carrie yells and immediately winces at her volume. “No, I would never do that to you”

“Then why-“, Flynn is getting more confused every second, “you wrote those? I thought you hated- the notes, I though you hated the notes”

To her horror, Carrie is now actually crying.

“I do hate the notes, I mean I feel so stupid, you hate Valentine’s Day and then I send you a rose, but I just- I like so much and I didn’t know what to do and I wanted to tell you but I couldn’t and then I wrote you those notes but they always sounded so stupid to me”

Carrie is full on panic rambling now and Flynn is barely processing all this new information that is thrown at her.

“I just couldn’t stop myself and then you said you actually like the notes? But I know you’d never like me, as a person, I mean I am awesome as a performer but horrible as a friend, let alone as a girlfriend and-“

“Carrie-“, Flynn tries to intersect, “Carrie!”

Carrie stops and finally looks at her, wide eyed.

“I do like you, as a person”, Flynn says. Her heart is beating out of her chest but she is not letting this go.

“I- what?” Carrie looks as confused as Flynn felt just a minute ago. “You do?”

“Yes”, Flynn says and now she can’t stop the smile on her face, “I really like you. Actually, I always wished those notes were from you.”

Carrie blinks. “You. Okay. Okay. Um- I really didn’t-“

Flynn laughs. “Deep Breaths Carrie.”

“I don’t really know what to do with this now, I’m not good at all this”, Carrie says, waving her hands around but she’s smiling too now, wider with every moment.

“How about a date? Milkshakes?” Flynn asks and she doesn’t even feel afraid anymore.

“Yes”, Carrie says, her eyes sparkling with happiness. “I’d love that.”

What was the longest time you’ve had the hiccups for?  Maybe for half an hour? Mine are never that bad.

What type of TV shows are your favourite?  Not a big TV show type of person to begin with since it seems as if my attention span wasn’t built for once-a-week, season-breaks kind of content haha. I do like sitcoms, I guess...bite-sized ones like Friends, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Big Bang Theory, etc. Drama shows I’d bite into if the plot is extremely intriguing to me or relevant to my interests, like The Crown or Breaking Bad.

Have you ever been a complete fangirl/fanboy over anything?  I was before then I wasn’t for a very long time, then I came back just recently with this BTS shit I got myself into.

Do you know anyone who has died in battle?  Hmm. I don’t think so. My great-grandpa lived a few more decades after the war.

When was the last time you went on an adventure?  July. My friends and I spent the whole day driving around and stopping by sooo many spots around the metro. It was a lot of fun and we were fucking b e a t after.

What brand is your vacuum cleaner?  I dunno. My mom mainly uses ours.

Have you ever given a public speech? Hmm, just the one time I was entered into a public speaking competition and was given a topic to talk about on the spot. That was honestly a lot of fun and I wish there were more opportunities to do that exact same thing.

Do you read comic books?  No. I tried getting into that whole thing, but didn’t see the appeal.

Do you force your way into conversations in which you are not involved?  Not always but if I’m starting to feel left out or awkward, I will start to ask a question here and there to ease my way into the conversation. But if the topic is clearly none of my business then I do stay out of the way.

Do you believe you can change someone?  This isn’t a black and white matter, I think. The idea of changing a person can have a lot of layers; in my org, for instance, I got to pick up a few quirks and behaviors from my friends just by being around them for a long time – in that sense, I changed. But you can also strive to change someone who’s struggling and try to make them become happy, which I tried to do with my ex – which of course I learned the hard way that you can’t change someone if in that context.

How did you react when your first pet died?  I was bummed out but didn’t throw a fit.

Have you ever drawn anime?  No.

Can you use a pogo stick?  I’ve never even seen one in real life. I’m dying to try it out just once.

What is your favorite flavor on sunflower seeds?  I don’t eat sunflower seeds. I don’t dislike them, I just really never seek them out.

Do you know a hoarder?  I heard my grandma had been one, but I didn’t see traces of it when I used to visit her. I guess she had been when she was younger and stronger. I show traces of hoarding too, but I don’t think it’s at a concerning level; I literally just threw out a bunch of shit in my room I’ve hoarded over the last five or so years.

Do you wax, pluck, or leave your eyebrows?  I don’t touch them; I’m never all that worried about my appearance. On very rare instances, I will shave some of the excess hair off. Do you have any interesting scar stories?  None of them are interesting tbh, just results of my own stupidity.

Do you hate the texture of meatballs?  I don’t hate their texture but I also just don’t enjoy meatballs in general. I find them boring, which has always led me to think if they’re really supposed to be just boring clumps of meat or if I’ve just always been served average meatballs.

Do you get migraines? Yes, I usually get one after work. They’ve decreased in frequency now but one will drop by every now and then to give me a shit time.

Would you ever let anybody else drive your car?  Sure. I’ve let Hans and Gab drive it countless times when I’ve had too much to drink. It’s a small car and is fairly easy to use and navigate. I would let Anj use it too at some point, but I want her to perfect her u-turns first hahahaha.

Which one of your friends will be the most successful?  It’s already one of my friends to begin with but I’m not naming names. They come from a privileged background to begin with and their godfather already handed one of his companies down to them, so. They were also told the CEO position is already a sure slot for them.

Bringing It All Back Home

Thus, we have arrived at the three greatest albums of all time. Dylan has gone electric and dropped the protest songs, much to the dismay of his loyal folk fanbase; they would later show up in force to jeer and boo at the man they once revered as a their new messiah. Despite having the nerve to plug in his guitar for much of this album, the B-side is still acoustic, and this is a perfect collection of songs that would prove rock ‘n’ roll could also be poetic and meaningful. Just because he had a backing band and was singing differently, Dylan was still honing his writing skills and experimenting with narrative, structure, and also quite a lot of drugs. 

1) Subterranean Homesick Blues - This was my introduction to Bob at 13 years old. I remember seeing the iconic video, hearing the nasal voice, and being so confused by the words, but I was instantly fascinated and determined to discover more about this strange man. Fourteen years later and the song still has a wondrous effect on me, this folk/rock/rap is a perfect rant on youth and disillusionment with the establishment. Iconic lines like ‘20 years of school and then they put you on the day shift’ or ‘join the army if you fail’ are all time classics. This is a barnstorming opening track, which shows that the old Dylan is dead and the new Dylan is coming out swinging. 

2) She Belongs To Me - A much more mellow track, about a lover whose artistic, bohemian ambitions must be pandered to. Dylan’s singing is brilliant, and it’s a nice little song in between two of the album’s rockiest numbers. 

3) Maggie’s Farm - The farm in question is Silas McGee’s Farm in which Dylan played a civil rights protest show, and he’s making it very clear that he won’t be doing that again. A ‘fuck you and farewell’ song to the community he once led, this is a scathing attack on the folk scenes expectations of him and how they oppressed his creativity. Famously, he would play this at the Newport Folk Festival in the summer of 1965 and almost start a riot. However, this is another classic and has been regularly reworked and played live over the last 55 years. Whilst I’m sure Bob’s anger has subsided over that time, it proves just how perfectly this song captures feelings of angst and artistic freedom, something Bob had to deal with every time he shifted genres. 

4) Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Another gentle love song that dissects infatuation in a beautifully poetic way, another song that would resonate and be performed live for decades, another song with perfect singing from Bob. Though his voice is slightly higher/more nasal on the louder tracks, the singing throughout this electric period is my favourite of all the ‘Dylan voices’. I’m always confused when people say he can’t sing, I think no matter how much he changes, he always sounds like Bob Dylan, and you can’t ask for anything better than that. 

5) Outlaw Blues - Dylan is now an outlaw, on the run from his former peers and fans. This is another loud, energetic, bluesy rock song that proves Bob is changing his identity and is almost a villain like the legends of the Old West: ‘I might look like Robert Ford, but I feel just like a Jesse James’.

6) On The Road Again - A very surreal narration of bohemian 60s life, describing a nightmare family that Bob implores the daughter to move away from. Again, this could be interpreted as moving away from the folk scene, however it is more likely that this is just another absurdist and funny tale that Bob loved to write during this period.

7) Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream - In the same vein as the previous track, this is a long, absurd, surreal, confusing, hilarious, meandering, and just plain weird song that is essentially the story of the founding of America. It is by no means literal or historically accurate, but it seems to be taking swipes at the foundations of the country and capitalism as a whole. It’s a brilliant piece of work that again shows how far Bob has come with imagery and metaphor. Also, the false start on the track never fails to put a smile on my face.

8) Mr. Tambourine Man - Now we move to the acoustic side of the album, and what an opener this is. One of his most loved, most played, and most covered tracks, this is another one for the history books. Is Bob the Tambourine Man who is being begged to keep performing for the masses? Regardless, this epic poem is like experiencing a dream, with lucid imagery and psychedelic lyrics that make you feel as if you are tripping on LSD alongside Bob. I know I’ve said this about a lot of tracks, but it is the definition of a perfect song and I think it’s impossible to get bored of, unless you’re listening to The Byrd’s cover which a heaping pile of shit and I won’t hear otherwise.

9) Gates Of Eden - Much like ‘Chimes Of Freedom’, this is another biblical epic, this time focusing on identity and youth in the 60s. The words are snarled as Bob sings about innocence, sin, and conformance, and the songs feels more like a renaissance painting than a piece of music. It’s truly stunning, you almost sit in awe as you try to take it all in, realising that a 23 year old, 56 years ago, was more in tune with society and his generation than anyone before or since. 

10) It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) - There’s a chance I may repeat this claim, as my opinion is always changing, but gun to my head I would say this is the finest song Dylan ever wrote, and would even go so far to say that this is the finest song anyone has ever written. It’s not even a song really, it’s a poetic stream of consciousness that takes aim at capitalism, authority, and of course, his audience. I could honestly write a book about it, dissecting each line and phrase, as there is not a single wasted word or beat. I really can’t do it justice here, just go listen to it or one of the many live versions, it’s always mind blowing to comprehend how anyone can write a song that feels like your brain is whispering the truths of the universe. 

11) It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue - The closing song is, again, flawless and personally in my top 5 Dylan songs of all time (though you’ll learn my top 5 has about 30 songs in it at any one time). A morbid farewell to the folk scene, this is a beautiful song that captures the sadness of a relationship ending and, much like the rest of the album, it is filled with imagery that is both challenging and esoteric. This has also been consistently been played live since its release, and it’s a testament to how amazing the songs on this album are, as the majority of them have stood the test of time and been in Bob’s repertoire for over half a century. All in all, a perfect end to a perfect album. 

Verdict: I hope I’ve made it clear that this album is one of the best things ever made, not only in regards to music, it’s just one of the best things ever. Despite my love of hyperbole, I do think these are 11 songs which certainly changed my life and how I view music/art/culture, and I hope it can have a similar effect on whoever reads this. What’s crazy is, even with all the fawning above, I actually think his next album is even better, which seems impossible. Dylan was on a roll and the backlash from this album, and his live performances, was only going to propel his songwriting and historical importance to new heights.

Westside Gunn - Pray For Paris ALBUM REVIEW

For the past 4 years, it seems like every year has been a Griselda takeover. Westside Gunn, Conway and Benny The Butcher put out at least 5 projects a year between the 3 of them and they really are one of the prime examples of consistency in Hip Hop. You know what you’re gonna get from these guys: bars on bars on bars over dirty boom bap beats. While these guys stay true to the  Buffalo sound that they created, they do have projects that sound different. I can definitely understand some of the criticism about a lot of their songs sounding the same as my biggest complaint about Flygod Is An Awesome God was that it sounded too similar to other songs in Westside Gunn’s extensive catalog. You know what you’re gonna get every time with Griselda and that’s not a bad thing at all. It would be kind of weird if Westside decided to do an Awaken, My Love! or a Rebirth. They know what their fans want and they are guaranteed to deliver. The debut Griselda album on Shady Records, WWCD, consisted of no sampling on the production which is bold for a group that uses samples almost exclusively for their beats. Westside Gunn prides himself in how quickly he can make great music and the inspiration behind his latest album, Pray For Paris happened to him not too long ago. A few months ago, Westside Gunn finally was approved to travel outside the country because he’s a convicted felon and one of his first stops was Paris for Paris Fashion Week. He was so inspired by the his trip to Paris, he started recording what was set to be an EP but turned out to be an album. I’ve been to Paris and I can see how some of the songs could have been inspired by Paris. I’ve noticed this on WWCD and Hitler Wears Hermes 7 but I didn’t fully think about it until I heard Pray For Paris that the beats are a lot more polished and sound mastered differently from the earlier Griselda classics. I’ve heard Westside rap over piano beats like George Bondo and French Toast before on songs like Lookin Like The Greatest, 94 Ghost Shit, and Eric B but these two beats have something two them that sounds a lot more expensive. The song Allah Sent Me reminded me a bit of Dinner Plate from Hall & Nash. Some beats on this album sound like classic Griselda but I don’t think I have ever heard Westside Gunn rap over a beat like Euro Step before. That song was fucking sick. There wasn’t much to that beat but it was super dope. Westside has some pretty historic collabs on this album as well. 327 has features from both Joey Bada$$ and Tyler, The Creator. In my CJ Fly review, I expressed wanting to have more Pro Era & Griselda collabs so this was a dream come true. Also, Odd Future were on MTV once many years back and FaceTimed Joey Bada$$ when he was still in High School so it’s cool to see it come full circle on this song. The beat is super laidback and before any of them started rapping, I could picture all 3 of them spitting on it. Joey Bada$$ killed it and Tyler hasn’t rapped like this probably since Cherry Bomb. I was glad to see Wale on this album because Wale can actually rap. Maybe we’ll see a wrestling-themed collab with Westside, Wale and Smoke DZA one day. One of the songs I was hyped for when I saw the tracklist was $500 Ounces with Freddie Gibbs and Roc Marciano and it did not disappoint at all. Much like what I said about 327, this song has one of those beats that is perfect for all 3 rappers. I’m surprised this is the first time we’re hearing Gibbs and Westside and Gibbs and Roc. Versace has a beat so soulful, it would have made a perfect Amherst Station 4. I was excited to hear the drop from Raw Is Flygod on Claiborne Kick as that is one of the most underrated WSG songs. For those who don’t know, Raw Is Flygod is a 14-minute track that Westside dropped a while back. I don’t think Westside Gunn has deepened his voice like that since Suede Mutumbos from HWH1 but I think it was to give Boldy James his shine. Westside Gunn and Boldy James first linked up last year on It’s Possible from HWH7. The first time I heard Boldy James was in 2013 and he has the perfect voice for rapping. I’ve kept tabs on his music since then but this year, he really reached his full potential this year with his second Alchemist collab album, The Price Of Tea In China. It is rumored that Boldy has signed to Griselda, making him the only artist not from Buffalo on the label but that is great news if it is true because it seems like Boldy is only now unlocking his potential even though he’s been at it for a while. Not too long ago, Griselda also signed Buffalo rapper Armani Caesar but I was wondering why she isn’t on the song. Keisha Plum of course is on Pray For Paris to deliver one of her fantastic poems. In addition to his feature on 327, Tyler, The Creator also produced Party Wit Pop Smoke has such a dope beat. I could picture Tyler spitting on this and I could picture Westside sounding good on various beats that Tyler has made like Rusty, Pigs, A Boy Is A Gun, Smuckers, Buffalo and Bimmer. Alchemist, Daringer and Camouflage Monk produced on the album like usual and DJ Premier produced Shawn vs. Flair which features some of the best rapping from WSG on the entire album. I was thinking about that as I listened to the whole album and I know Westside raps great on every project he’s put out but on some projects you can tell he’s putting in more effort to rhyme and have dope punchlines and this is one of those projects. Pray For Paris is probably Westside Gunn’s best release since Supreme Blientele and also the first time anyone has had tap dancing on a Hip Hop album before. What’s so crazy is that this album is so great but it’s only Westside’s first offering scheduled for the year. He is going to be putting out his Shady Records debut in June or July, dropping Hall & Nash 2 with Conway on September 11, dropping Hitler Wears Hermes 8 on Halloween like usual, and dropping his Madlib collab Gunnlib in December. That’s not even mentioning what Conway and Benny have stored for us this year. I hope Westside Gunn gets to travel more so he can make more dope music like this inspired by his travels because the music is that fucking great.

It was your last appointment of the day, you always scheduled the three gliders right before closing as there would be no animals to harass them and cause them any unnecessary stress. Yet part of you knew the real reason came from their handsome owner who always left you in something of a daze. Stepping into the waiting room, you saw him sitting with the carry cage and smiled calling his name and inviting him in. “Tell me how everything has been going?”

“Ah well Odengie doesn’t really like me, he always cries when I try to pick him up” Seokjin sighed as you reached into the cage and took one of the sugar gliders out and gave a quick examination. Before switching neither glider showing any negative reactions to being held. “Wae, why do you behave for her but not for me, ya! Answer me!”

You giggled at his cute pout as he scolded his sugar gliders crossing his arms. And turning his back to them.

Min Yoongi: Handwriting

Yoongi watched you leave the classroom. He had never really noticed your presence, though he hardly paid attention to others. You had dropped something, he casually moved to pick it up. It was an impressive poem. It wasn’t a love letter, at least it didn’t read like one. It wasn’t addressed to anyone, it was just a poem. There was something about it that he connected with the words were a raw emotion somewhere between sadness and anger. He was writing music and couldn’t get it out of his head so he made a beat put it together tweaked some of the words. 

You were on your way to an underground party, you had dressed up in a really pretty dress. Standing off to the side you heard a name you knew, it was the stage name of a guy from your class. Gloss. Walking over trying to show a little support as a very nice beat began. He was amazing barely breathing rapping with ease, it all flowed so well, he was looking through the crowd. His eyes glided over your form before snapping back and locking onto you he began a chorus and your mouth fell open. This was your poem, he made your depressive poem more aggressive mocking in a ‘the only person who can hurt me is me’ way. He gave it bite complete with a condescending laugh, before licking the corner of his mouth suggestively. As the song finished you staggered over to the side of the stage breathless as he stepped down catching your figure and looked down his ears turning pink.

Jung Hoseok: Compliment

Hoseok can’t tell if your flirting cause you compliment everyone in your friends group equally. But he can’t be crazy. Your hugs always seem tighter, your eyes linger longer, your smile brighter for him. You compliment him so much before turning to the others and telling them similar things but with a lot less feeling. Why were you doing this to him? You had all gone out for chimaek and you were on your third glass when you started leaning against him holding his arm and complimenting little features and mannerisms he didn’t think anyone else had ever noticed. He decided to speak up and he complimented your eyes telling you how much he enjoyed the sparkle they held. It seemed like he started a battle of compliments as the two of you began sending them back and forth. Until he got sick of your bedroom eyes scanning his face and shutting up your rant about his dance moves by kissing you fiercely.

Kim Namjoon: Opposite

You woke in a strange place utterly confused, a very manly scent of an ocean breeze laced into the sheets and pillow. You stood up and staggered something seemed off your centre of gravity was different you felt lighter around the chest and lower back. Regaining your balance you headed to the bathroom feeling something strange between your legs. Perhaps a bunch of fabric that wasn’t sitting right on your pajama pants. You jumped in front of the bathroom mirror shrieking in a lower tenor than you were used to, someone ripped the door open. “Hyung what’s wrong?” You didn’t answer confused you were a man. “Namjoon-hyung?”

Park Jimin: Spouse

Arriving at the hotel and looking out of the balcony, watching the waves crash onto the sand down below you didn’t notice your gorgeous husband wrapped his arms around you. He unpinned your hair from its elaborate do and sweeped the soft curls to the side and kissed your neck slowly. Asking you what was on your mind as he unbuttoned the back of your wedding dress meticulously. Your mind was completely blank due to his ministrations and you said the first thing on you could think of. “If there was a tsunami, we wouldn’t survive” His lips paused on your neck and he began giggling.

You have been sending passive aggressive emails back and forth with the damn marketing team all week. They wanted to use more of the budget for publicity, but you just didn’t have the funds, your business was trying to turn a profit and every time you seemed to take a few steps forward the marketing team pulled you right back to the start. You had no liquid assets, no savings if things went wrong over two hundred people were out of a job.

Looking over your computer screen you saw a rather handsome young man biting his lip with his two front teeth. Is this really the previously number one gamer Seagull? Sending a formal request to fight at the arena he accepted and you glanced around the person two computers down gasped getting the battle notification. You knew a lot of people would come to see the match the arena was soon maxed out and the chat room was fierce with people announcing the live stream for those who couldn’t get in. You fought absolutely smashing him in combat and you stood up still fighting. 

“SnakeEyes you think you are so good but no one can win against my sword of eternal flame” His voice ran through your headphones, and you shivered at how cute he was thinking he could win.

“Your cute Seagull in your little green Hoodie, your name should be Bunny boy” you hit pause on the screen “CyberCafe is my favorite place to game too”

“Of course you are girl” He scoffed “who else would dare to challenge me, you running out of options prolonging it won’t lessen the pain when I win, baby girl”

You stood up leaning over the computer screens with a smirk, “If I win you buy dinner how does that sound” People had their phones out live streaming your conversation.

Hi Alex! How much of the instrumentation was figured out before heading into the studio? Did you just bring in bare minimum demos and then fleshed them out in the studio? Or did you have most of it prepared and just recorded it? I really loved the album by the way!

Thank you! It was different for each track. A lot of the songs I had full fleshed demos that my band and I had recorded in Portland, and Sam Cohen and I worked around those. Some of the tracks like "But You" I had some Garage band demos I made on my own that we worked around, and some of the tracks like "Soft Currents" were just raw iPhone recordings of me playing and singing, and Sam and I worked out together in the studio.

Your music has some really interesting chord progressions and melodic phrases. To what extent do you consciously apply music theory to your songwriting, and how much just comes naturally from ear and instinct?

To no extent :/ I am not super skilled in music theory, I just play around until it seems like it makes sense to me

You described your desire for Belladonna of Sadness to sound "murderous", and I thought that darkness and dangerous feeling really shone through. What adjectives would you powerfully ascribe to your sophomore album? What tonal differences were important to you while recording?

I'm pretty new to your music, but, everyday I can't stop myself from liking it more. My two current favorite songs are “The Phantom” and “Bad Disease”. I like Lana she's talented, I understand the comparison in some ways , people tend to compare things naturally. But, no she wasn't my personal inspiration in any conscious way

Did you make a conscious effort to distance yourself from the sound of Belladonna of Sadness with this new album?

No, I have gotten mixed feedback some people say its the exact same sound, some say it is different, I just created what came naturally to me and used sounds that I am personally drawn to.

If you were to try to make someone a fan of your music, but could only show them three of your songs, what songs would you show them?

Thanks! Well my homie Cameron Avery wrote that tune, he just asked me to sing on it and I was glad to!

Can you talk about the differences in recording your first album while signed to a major label and this album while signed to a indie label? I know you’ve spoken about why you left Columbia, but I was wondering how your personal process differed this time around, especially with different resources and personnel?

Yeah it was a lot less pressure making this record, I had more say and more freedom of expression.

You said in an interview that you wrote the songs for The Archer on piano or guitar and brought them to the studio recorded on your phone. Would you ever consider releasing these as bonus tracks?

Do you have any tips on how to overcome writers block/find new ways to approach writing ? I've been struggling a bit lately... Have you been reading lately? If so, what books would you recommend ? :)

Just be kind to yourself, do what is natural, don't beat yourself up. I just re-read "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" by Otessa Moshfegh, now I am ready " Conversations With Friends" by Sally Rooney. I would recommend any Joan Didion, also I enjoy Salingers "Nine Stories"

This album feels a lot more personal than the first one. How would you say it compares in relation to how you expressed yourself as an artist?

I was very insecure while writing my first record, and I was co-writing so I used a lot of techniques to shelter my own opinions and feelings, in The Archer it was just me, so it was more of a journal entry than a big fancy record

Which artists did you grow up admiring, and inspired your style? Also, do you have any poetry recommendations, seeing how all your lyrics are poems in their own right?

hmmmm. ok Hilary Duff, Elvis, The White Stripes, Billie Holiday. Poetry: I don’t read much poetry but I like Rimbaud and Sylvia Plath

How did you feel when you found out “Risk” played on True Detective?

I cried

On Belladonna, what inspired the lyrics and melody for “Till You're Mine”? That song is always on repeat in my household.

For this record I wrote the melodies, lyrics, and chords for every song aside from "The Phantom" which was a collaboration with Sam Cohen.

What inspired you to make this new album?

I just make songs, and each song was inspired by something different, but mostly I needed to show people I WRITE MY SONGS

Am I in love? maybe. this song starts off STRONGGGGG very much grittiness in there and distortion. but lydia’s vocals are a really pleasant contrast to the static-like instruments. the drums Drew did are really fucking outstanding. 10/10

I don’t really know... it jumps STRIAGHT (haha) in. it’s mainly the speaker observing others in love and this is a great ending track and it really pulls the album together. Genessa’s guitar is SOLID AF. 9/10

goes from UP THERE to down here. it’s really strong and loud and then it calms down and the vocals are like heavenly. wow. chorus is just... wow, i can’t describe it; it’s just really fucking good. super strong start to the album. 11/10

this song, man. my dad likes this song and he never likes my music unless it’s Queen or Led Zepplin or another 80’s rock band. Josh Taylor really knocked out of the park with the vocals like holy shit some of the theatre kids would be jealous. 11/10

it builds and swells. a trumpet comes in amidst the chaos and then it goes bye bye. then it comes back like taylor swift does every album cycle. Keys? BEAUTIFUL! Bass is still strong af. flows really gooder and it’s lovely. 10/10

a bop. calm then it does the bass thingy and it goes into this tambourine, bass, vocal, (and eventually) guitar thing and the guitar fits in really well even if it came in later than the others. the guitar parts are always nice and simple; the bass just slaps (literally). 11/10

Pure Gold

it’s a really good listen and the bridge is really good and it really grabs your attention if you haven’t been paying much at all. the beginning of the song is absolutely phenomenal. the verses and prechorus are really fan-fucking-tastic. i love them. the chorus is just drums and synth sounds with a really low bass voice and it’s lit af. 9/10

ice cold (feat. Kimbra)

uhhhh... it took me a minute but i warmed up to it. the beginning gave me a bit of whiplash after hearing Taylor’s voice for the past 30 minutes. Kimbra really works well for this track tho and half•alive used her talent really well. the rapping was a very pleasant and welcome surprise. 8/10

EDIT: this is literally my new favourite song on this album. 11/10

Rest (feat. Samm Henshaw)

i love the intro to this song. it’s so chill, ya know? chorus is really good with the loudness and shit; it’s really fucking good. the spoken/rap parts are also really good. lyrics are also really good. Henshaw comes in after the second verse and his verse is really good. wow. 9/10

BREAKFAST

starts off strong with the synth vocals and Taylor’s voice just lays ontop of them then an acoustic guitar comes in and it’s starts to come together and it sounds vvv nice. it’s a really chilled and laid back song. 9/10

creature

calm then the synths came in and then more NOISE came in and then the acoustic guitar and Taylor’s vocals, holy shit they’re fucking spot on!! the chorus is also CHAOS!! it’s mostly chill until it’s a bit chaotic and loud and that’s how i like my music. 10/10

((Totally! I hope these lil drabbles help cheer you up some! And remember, never feel bad about your voice. It’s not the way you talk that matters, it’s the words and the feelings behind them. I’d write for all of them if I could but I decided to add Bubba, Norman, and Chop-Top for this one cause two of them have a stutter (though Chop-Top’s ain’t as strong and Norman’s is more due to anxiety and therefore written different) and the other is just always v good. They’re also some of my favorites so I’ll always love writing them lol. Btw I tried my best to write a stutter accurately but, like always, I want to make sure I didn’t write anything offensive or inaccurate so let me know if there’s anything along those lines. Also, this is long af so I added a read-more.

You went to a kitchen drawer and pulled out a gallon Ziploc bag, dumping the handful inside. “H-Here. We-we’ll j-j-j-just save s-some and I’ll m-make something w-w-w-with it l-later.” Michael set the knife off to the side and lifted up his current “project” as if presenting it for your approval. You rolled your eyes, but smiled anyway.

“Yes, i-it’s a b-b-b-b-beautiful J-Jack O’Lantern, M-Michael. B-B-But it’s gon-gonna r-rot if we p-p-put it out n-now!” But even as you say it you know you might as well break out the tea candles.

Billy:

Once the bell rang, you nearly ran out of the classroom to your locker. You glowered as you replaced the books from your previous class with the ones for your next. You slammed the door shut to see your boyfriend standing behind it, a wicked, yet charming smirk on his face.

“Boo.” You just rolled your eyes.

“N-Not in the m-m-mood.”

His brow furrowed at that, usually you were more happy to see him. “What’s up babe?” his eyes looked around defensively at your fellow classmates wandering the halls, “Some punks giving you shit again?”

“N-No…” you sighed, “The t-teacher c-c-c-called on me in c-c-class today to r-r-read. Asshole kn-knows I d-d-don’t w-wanna t-talk in front of ev-everyone.”

Billy scowled at that, “What a fucking prick. Want me to teach him something?”

You hesitated for a moment, he was a jerk, but no. “D-D-Don’t w-worry ab-b-bout it B-Billy…He’s-he’s j-j-just doing hi-his job…”

“Hey,” Billy gripped you reassuringly by the shoulders, getting you to look him in the eyes, “Never let nothings like that make you think less of yourself baby. You’re amazing just the way you are.”

You almost felt yourself well up at his thoughtful words. Sometimes he shocked you with how sweet he could be. You nodded, and leaned into hug him.

He returned the embrace, and you felt him lean down to whisper into your ear, “You wanna just ditch and watch movies at my place?” A very tempting offer you may just take him up on.

“H-H-Hello? Wh-Who’s this?”

“Do you like scary movies?”

“Oh s-s-sure. I b-bet,” sarcasm and annoyance dripping from your words, “Quit b-being a creep R-R-Randy.”

“It’s not Randy. That your boyfriend?”

At that comment, you started to get an idea of who your mysterious caller was, but decided to play along. “N-Nah, b-b-but I d-do h-have one.”

“Oh yeah,” the voice giggled, “And what’s he like? Bet he wouldn’t like you talkin’ to lil ole me.”

“P-p-probably n-not, b-b-but he’s not h-here. And you h-h-haven’t h-hung up.”

There was a pause on the other end, then a huff. “You never answered my first question.”

“Oh? Th-that th-thing ab-b-bout s-scary movies? Yeah, I l-l-like ‘em”

“What’s your favorite scary movie?”

You hesitate for a second, while it would be fun to keep this going, you feel like upping the ante a bit. “I d-d-don’t know. H-How ab-b-bout you c-come up h-here and w-w-watch o-one w-with me?”

“What about your boyfriend?”

“C-C-Come on M-Mister K-K-Killer, h-he c-can join. I th-th-think you kn-know w-where t-to find h-him.”

You heard a shuffling on the other end and then the call abruptly ended. You sat in silence for a moment, curious about what would happen next. A familiar rapping sound came from outside your window. You pulled back the curtain, revealing your boyfriend standing there with his signature goofy grin plastered across his face. Through the glass you hear the voice you’d missed, “Wanna let me in?”

Bubba:

The Sawyer home was unusually quiet right now. With Drayton out at the gas station and his other brother doing god-knows-what, just you Bubba and Grandpa were left at the house. With Bubba working downstairs, you had been left to your own devices. Though you didn’t mind some alone time, it was odd that you hadn’t really seem hide-nor-hair of your beau lately. Though that seemed like it would be changing pretty soon, as you heard the large metal door to the kitchen slam. You turned to see Bubba coming towards you, happily clutching something in his hands.

“W-W-What’ve you g-got there B-Bubba?” He excitedly shoved the object, which you know could tell was a book, into your hands. “Where the Sidewalk Ends” the cover read, with a drawing of two children looking over what looked like the edge of a cliff. You flipped through it, and it appeared to be a collection of poems cute illustrations to go with them. You turned back at your love, who was watching you eagerly, seemingly trying to figure out your reaction.

“It s-seems like a v-very n-nice b-b-book H-Honey. Th-th-thank you.”  His brow seemed to furrow underneath his mask and he poked the book more insistently. You cocked your head in confusion, “I’m af-f-fraid I d-don’t get w-what your s-s-saying.” He opened the book and a warbling hum came from him as he pointed from the words to you.

“You w-w-want m-me to r-r-read it? Out l-loud?” He squealed happily and nodded. “ Are y-you s-s-sure? B-B-But W-what ab-bout th-the way I t-talk?” He nodded again and pulled you into his lap on the couch. He hugged you tightly around the waist, resting his head on your shoulder as he looked down at the book. You laughed softly about his enthusiasm, “Alr-right…I-Invitation…If y-you are a dreamer c-c-come in. If y-you are a dreamer, a w-wisher, a liar. C-Come in….

Chop-Top:

The whole Sawyer house was very much relieved today. It had been awhile since anyone had driven by and food was running kinda low, making everyone a bit on edge and touchy. Luckily, a whole van of people stopped by last night and were quickly dispatched, meaning everyone would get to eat. Your boyfriend’s brothers were currently preparing and cooking the meat, while your boyfriend looted and organized the belongings of the now-cattle.

“Y/N! C-Come in here and take a look at this!” your boyfriend hollered from the other side of the house. This was somewhat ominous as you never could tell what he was going to show you when he got excited like this. His tone of voice when showing you a neat bug was the same when he was propping up and goofing off with a corpse. You walked in and he was standing in the middle of the room, surrounded by a mess of objects scattered around him. On him was the ugliest shirt you had ever seen. It looked like bowling alley carpet had a love child with a kid’s drawing of what a Hawaiian shirt was supposed to look like. It physically hurt your eyes a bit to look at it. “Check out th-these digs babe!” he crowed.

“W-Wow…th-that s-sure is…c-c-copacetic.”

“I know r-right!” He turned back to admire himself in the dirty wall mirror, “T-Totally far-r out!

You hid a grin behind your hand, “You’re one sh-shagad-d-delic c-cat.”

He whipped back around to face you, beaming ear to ear, “Awww sh-shucks,” he wadded his way through the mess over to you, throwing his boney arms around you waist. “You’re pretty b-bitchin’ your-yourself,” he crooned, pressing a sloppy and slightly gross kiss on your cheek. Maybe you could get used to the shirt…

Norman Bates:

There was a record playing in the main lobby of the motel when your returned from tidying one of the cabins. As you stepped in farther, you could make out your sweetheart’s voice singing along softly. Curiosity drew you closer and you watched from the doorway as he folded laundry. His voice was as sweet and smooth as honey and the melody seemed to drip into you, wrapping around and warming your heart.

“It takes a lot of sunshine…To make a s-summer day…But just a little love…Can go a long, long way…”

You wolf-whistled, and he whipped around to face you, dropping the shirt he was holding. “Oh dear, I, um, well, you, w-weren’t supposed, to, er, see t-that.”

You moved towards him, picking up the shirt from the floor and returning it to him. “Y-You s-s-sing b-beautifully you kn-know.”

His eyes flicked back to meet your’s, “R-Really, I, well, I just never, s-sing in front of anyone…”

You smiled, looking up at him with faux innocence, “H-How does th-this one g-g-go again? So i-i-i-incid-dentally…”

He gulped, “Um, Treat love g-gently…”

“W-When it c-c-comes in view…”

“It-It could even, even happen to…”

You both joined in for the last line, “S-someone l-l-like you…”

As the song played on in the background you realized how close the two of you had gotten. You both blushed and turned away slightly, but neither of you could hide the blush or grins painted across your faces.

Here is my delayed but finalized 2018 EP list!

Princess Nokia- For this EP, Princess Nokia switched to an emo rap style popular on Soundcloud. I thought I wouldn’t like or even understand this EP because I don’t listen to Soundcloud rap, I didn’t really have Fueled by Ramen fever in middle school, and I never liked nu metal (which Princess Nokia says this EP is inspired by but I don’t personally hear it). I listened to the songs ironically until they began to grow on me. Those warbly vocals. The repeated Smash my heart to pieces line. How For the Night sounds like Frere Jacques instrumentally. And now I can proudly say it holds my top spot in my 2018 EP list. I’d like to say something about “in a world where we’re always told to look like we’re unbothered and #winning and other people are always pressed, Princess Nokia tells us it’s okay to feel normal human emotions” but that’s not close. 2018 was the year of Princess Nokia for me, so it’s only natural her new EP would be my favorite. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be with a wink and a nudge but let’s ask all the other Soundcloud rappers first.  

Kilo Kish- While Kilo Kish’s sound is the epitome of chill, her lyrics are bizarrely accurate portraits of millennial anxiety and contemplations. This time, she changes her ambient spoken word poems for outsider electronic music that is neither PC music nor generic tropical house. In one interview, she said that her biggest regret was that she didn’t go as experimental as she could’ve on this project, so here’s to wondering what the multi hyphenate will do for her next project.  

Ojerimie- I feel like 2018 is the year that alt r&B became oversaturated. Personally, I think as long as there will be sad and lonely late night texters, there will be an audience for musicians who can’t always sing, use electronic production, and claim to be influenced by Sade. Artists like The Weeknd and Beyonce who used to receive more commercial attention (or at least better first week numbers) were unable to meet previously set high expectations; Drake, who set the tone for alt r&b in 2011, turned out to be a secret father, cementing his status as f***boi supreme with several years of worst behavior including streaming schemes, Spotify takeovers, cultural appropriation, mental health misstatements, age gaps, and celebrating human traffickers, showing us that sensitive isn’t always good. Genre gentrifiers like Disclosure, The 1975, Justin Timberlake, Years and Years, and Ryan Hemsworth left to do other sounds; critical darlings like Blood Orange and The Internet have less hype for their albums this time around, newcomer Jorja Smith was completely clowned upon by Twitter for her vocals, and artists like Zayn, Tinashe, and Indiana all had albums all pushed back and compromised (all on Sony), so hearing a newcomer have late night red wine R&B music is a great pleasure. Highlights include drum and bass 2003, 80’s sophisti pop sounding Heat, and camming theme song 4U. Do yourself a favor and check out her great back catalogue as well.

Ravyn Lenae- I listened to Ravyn’s EP back in February, but what made me really remember her now was her performance on the now cancelled Rundown with Robin Thede on BET. Not only was it a good place for politics, but also a good venue for smaller artists. SNL is only decent for white hipster bands so it’s nice for black artists who aren’t that huge yet to have places to perform on television. Ravyn is from the Chicago scene and has put out 2 projects before this. EP highlights include the chill Night Song, the uplifting Sticky, and her stellar collaborations with Steve Lacy. With catchy hooks, sweet vocals, and a short track list that leaves you craving for more, Ravyn Lenae is the real Sweetener of 2018.

Hatchie- I once read that shoegaze and noise pop are popular because the whirring and noises from the guitars make it sound like people are talking, which makes people feel less lonely. I can’t say whether or not that’s true as a fact, but I can admit that Hatchie does make me feel happy. The shoegazer from the South has toured with Kylie Minogue and worked with Robin Guthrie already. Her songs have a joyful warmth to them and remind me of 90’s artists like The Cranberries, Drop Nineteens, and Madder Rose. Don’t incubate- hatch today.

Disclosure- I once read about the 2nd album UK artist curse, where an artist who had a specific UK niche tries to go too general for their sophomore album and end up losing everyone, with Katy B and Duffy being some examples of it. I still loved Caracal by Disclosure, but other people thought it was just a straightforward pop album rather than a forward thinking electronic album. Then another bad EP in 2016 made me lose interest in them until their new EP this year. It’s more sample heavy and very retro inspired but I think anyone would like it, but in a good way and not like Maroon 5.

Kitten- 2 years after their most recent EP, Kitten is back with their first fan funded project. Truth be told, I don’t really see why their had to be an independent label, because it stays in the same 80’s goth synthpop atmosphere as their previous songs. That doesn’t mean it’s derivative, but I’d like to know what happened at the label. Tracks include the Halloweenish Pink Champagne, the Robert Smith sounding I Did It!, and the vulnerable Abigail.

Kaytranada- More straightforward R&B/synth than his albums and remixes but good stuff to chill to.

Childlike Sound- I’ll be honest and say that I don’t know too much about them. I always saw @emoblackthot promote them on Twitter which encouraged me to try them out. Although they’re self produced, they go above and far beyond most bedroom pop acts. Some of their songs sound nu disco while others would fit right in on Solange’s True. Remember, why act grown when you can be Childlike?

St Beauty- A duo of singer songwriters on Janelle Monae’s label, St Beauty released a promising debut EP this year. Maybe this is because I had no expectations, but I preferred this to Dirty Computer because they were more concise and didn’t try too hard with the concept. I enjoyed Stone Mountain, a niece to Cranes in the Sky by Solange. Tides is a nice pseudo trip hop song (well, at least it sounds more trip hop than whatever the hell Morcheeba and Hooverphonic have been putting out for a decade), and Colors is a nice summery dancehall song.

Channel Tres- He joins Princess Nokia’s Versace Hottie as the only non Azealia Banks or Drag Race contestant hip house song that came out after the year 2000 and is actually good. Minimal camp value though, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Shygirl- Bombastic club music perfect for a night out or the last night on earth. A cross between Jlin and Charli XCX, has enough bite in it to keep you going the whole night. Bring your steel toe boots.

Yuno- How someone this catchy flew past me is a complete mystery, but I’m glad I know about him now. If you liked when Tame Impala remixed Miguel, you would enjoy this. It’s perfect enough to soundtrack your summer to, or at least a soundtrack for cruise line commercials and martinis in a can. Some slight unconventional moments like pitched vocals.

The Marias- Lofi, chill, jazzy, summer, outdoorsy music. I’m still waiting for an a ha moment song but for now, I’m enjoying the nice psychedelic vibes that they give me.

Alina Baraz- I was almost finished with this list, but I thought 14 was an ugly number and some Russian collusion lead me to putting Alina Baraz on my EP list! I didn’t listen to this too much yet, but I can always appreciate minimal electronic music with pleasant vocals and decent features, especially now that Sabrina Fraudio has been exposed.
