Day 7
Free-day (Out of order and late) Alenoah as Sherlock/Moriarty.
I like it when two characters play mind games and scheming against or with each other.
I didn`t plan to create an AU, but – my rant and bits of literature/character analysis (The Vision). Also, draw concept sketch.
Tumblr media
Noah (Detective Sherlock Holmes). I mean, they're both geniuses, introverts who don't care about social opinion and some versions depicted him as being good with dogs. In Victorian England, I totally see Noah opening a detective agency, because you either go working on a plant or you might use your geniuses’ intelligence to solve crimes, like game puzzles, and make monies to pay bills and buy new books because in 1800 many books were expensive and produced in small quantities.
Plus! I might look at this too far, but I think the Sherlock and Watson analogy was implemented in London episode when they strip team Chris just to Noah and Owen for investigation.
Owen (Dr. Watson). Basically in the original books, Watson plays the role of the guy, your typical visual novel MC, well narrator, who has character, but his whole purpose is just to be a witness to detectives doing, asking questions for the audience. This leads to usually representing Watson as either annoyed with Sherlock's antics or (usually in kids' media) naïve but with good intentions because of this simplification, to show his kindhearted nature in cartoons and caricatures he is portrayed as chubby, which is what we need! But all of them did service in the Anglo-Afghan War, even Disney version mentioned it. (Also if you want to do Nowen version of Jhonlock I don`t mind, sure go for it)
Alejandro (professor Moriarty). Do I really need to explain? Both archvillains in their stories. Professor, respected in society for his talent and achievements, wealthy, but behind all of that façade he`s "Napoleon of crime". He doesn’t usually do crimes himself but rather, schemes, orchestrates the events, or provides the plans that will lead to a successful crime, like paying money to a court so that someone can be released from prison.
Heather (Irene Adler). OK, in the original books (all books written not by Arthur Conan Doyle are basically fanfics) her character and Sherlock don`t date (But if you like, it`s fine). She was more like “I know what you are” towards him.  I want to base it more on Warner Bros Sherlock where Irene works with Moriarty, but they also try to get rid of each other. She is also famous for blackmailing royals, If it isn`t most Heather thing I don`t know what is.
Eva (Mrs. Hudson). The landlady. I think it would be funny, she yelling at them to pay their bills in time.

Part 6
Part 7
If you just got here and want to know more about my characters, you can read my comic starting right here!
"Wait, what? If you can do that, why didn't you do it when we met? Weren't you afraid I'd freak out?"
"Well... it takes a lot of energy, and it's not something I can do at the drop of a hat, either. It takes time to spin up. It also wears off after about an hour," he explained, pausing for a moment to take a sip of his drink, "and, yes... I was afraid you would freak out, but I also didn't know how long you would be unconscious. You were out for about twelve hours... I can't hold it for that long."
Avery shifted pensively on the couch, his eyes not meeting mine. My heart sank. He'd only been in my apartment for half an hour, and I had already upset him.
"Look, we don't have to do this if you don't want to. Please don't feel pressured to agree, okay? I won't be upset. We can do something else."
"Please don't misunderstand. I really want to go! I've admired the Ferris wheel from my lighthouse many nights; I've always wanted to see it up close. It's just that, I've never been around that many humans at once before. I'm concerned I won't... behave correctly. Casper, I... I don't want to get you in trouble, or embarrass you."
I stared at him, dumbfounded. I had to admit, it did make sense for a man whose only social interactions were Internet-based to be concerned about his first social outing. I just couldn't believe he was worried about embarrassing me. I shook my head, snorting.
"Dude, there's nothing you could do that would embarrass me, I am so cringe already on my own. As far as getting me in trouble, eh. I've been in trouble before," I said, smirking coolly. That was a lie. I was a total goody-goody who'd never gotten so much as a speeding ticket, but I was willing to risk it for him.
Avery chuckled uncomfortably. He still would not look at me. "So have I."
My eyes widened.
"Holy shit, like, with the law? Avery, you? What did you do?" It was hard to imagine this straight-laced man, in his neat little button-down and slacks, had done anything wrong in his life, much less run into legal trouble.
Avery looked down at his hands, then inhaled deeply. "To answer that, I think it would be appropriate to first explain why I'm here, living in that abandoned lighthouse, in the first place.
"I am from a place called Cirropa, way up in the mesosphere: The highest level of the atmosphere where clouds can still form. Your scientists think that noctilucent clouds are the only type that form there -- that isn't true. Above that layer is where sentient variants, like myself, are born. We just aren't detectable by human technology at that altitude. When you see noctilucent clouds, you are really just seeing the "floor" of Cirropa," he explained.
"Though clouds can't die of illness, pollution can still make us sick, just like it makes you sick. It also prevents new clouds from being born; sentient and mundane alike. A little is tolerable, but too much has a major impact on clouds as a whole. Your industrial revolution in the 1700s had such a deleterious effect on our population that we are now on the verge of extinction: That is why I'm here. I research weather patterns and pollution relief strategies, and collect data that your scientists don't have the technology to obtain, then anonymously provide it to organizations that are trying to enact change. I wanted to ensure that currency would never be a barrier for entry in terms of obtaining my services, because for me, the situation is quite literally life-and-death. So, I do it for free.
I don't often have need for physical things, but when I do, I steal them. Books, clothes, parts to maintain the devices I use to collect data, et cetera. I never take anything I don't need, including food -- I only know that I can eat food because I have occasionally found wild berries and such while conducting research, and, well... I'm a curious fellow."
He brightened a bit, to my great relief, then continued, "Despite the pollution and damage you cause, I still find humans endearing and fascinating. I know you are not all the same, and I feel true sorrow for those who are suffering like we are. The work I do is for them, too. But yes, I have been caught stealing before; I've even been chased by your authorities once or twice! I try not to steal from local businesses when I can avoid it, though. I don't want to hurt small shop-owners with families to feed. Robbing big-box stores is more dangerous, since it's easier to get cau- Casper, are you okay?"
When Avery finally looked at me, my eyes were glassy with tears that I was fighting to prevent from rolling down my cheeks. I hated crying in front of other people, but when I got emotional, it was impossible to hide -- my face flushed when I cried, too. Quickly, I turned into my shoulder and rubbed my tears on my sleeve. He was just so compassionate. My species was destroying his, yet he still held such tender curiosity and empathy for us; he still wanted to be there in my apartment, spending time with me. What could I say to that?
"Avery... whatever you need, just ask me, okay? I'll give you my phone number."
"Casper, I couldn't possibly-"
"Yes, you could. I'm not rich, obviously... but I make enough money. The work you are doing is so important, more important than anything I've ever done. I can't bear the thought of you putting yourself at risk when I can do something about it... especially since I literally owe you my life. I would have drowned yesterday if not for you. Please?" I implored from across the coffee table, my hands fidgeting in my lap.
Avery fidgeted a bit, himself, looking out the window for a moment.
"Alright, dewdrop. If you insist," he relented, smiling a little now.
"Yesss! Here's my number." He typed it into his phone, then gave me his. "So... we got a little off track. Do you still want to go to the fair? Like I said, no hard feelings if not."
He perked up again, his big smile a salve for my aching heart. "Yes!"
"Cool, let's do this transformation thing."
+++
"Erm. Could you turn around? I've never had someone watch me do this before," Avery asked, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Oh, yeah, of course."
I spun around, facing the kitchen. From behind me, he took a deep breath.
"Remember, once I'm transformed, we have one hour. Okay?"
"Got it, no problem. The fairgrounds are a short walk away, and I'll set a timer on my phone."
"Okay."
First, there was silence. Then, a sound like crackling fireworks, which grew progressively louder until it was so loud, I was concerned my neighbor might hear it. In the blurry microwave window, I could see flashes of light, followed by the faint chlorine-like scent of ozone. The microwave clock informed me that this went on for three minutes, during which time the urge to peek was nigh-unbearable, but I stayed put. Then, there was silence again. After what felt like ages, Avery spoke, "Okay, you can turn around now."
I whirled, instantly catching my breath.
His face was essentially the same, but his puffy head shape had been compacted into that of a human skull, the top of which erupted in a cloud of fluffy, curly white hair. Peeking out from his curls I spied two delicate ears, and his previously white irises were now a playful cerulean, glimmering above his round, cherub-like cheeks. It took me a moment to realize my mouth was open, and close it.
"Do I look human?" He asked.
Avery didn't look human at all, he looked like an archangel, perhaps even a god in this form. 'Celestial' was the only word that seemed appropriate to describe his beauty, and yet... I felt a pang of regret. Though I was excited to take him to the fair, and I accepted this as the only way he could attend... I already missed his cloud form, and the soft, elegant curves of his real head.
So distracted was I, that I forgot to temper my response.
"You're the most beautiful person I've ever seen," I said, and in my heart I knew that I wasn't just talking about his face.
Avery flushed, and despite his human countenance, his blush was still blue.
+++
The glowing arc of the Ferris wheel grew larger as we approached, LED lights illuminating it in a rainbow of colors. It was a Monday night, and I noticed approvingly that the crowd had thinned considerably from the mass of patrons I had seen on weekends prior. As we walked under the colorful welcome awning, the aroma of popcorn, frying oil, and spun sugar engulfed us. The night was warm, and as I looked at Avery, his blue eyes reflecting the many lights looked like a sea of stars.
"What would you like to do, first? If you don't know, I'm happy to lead on," I offered.
"Oh, I'm so excited to ride the Ferris wheel, aren't you?"
I had been on Ferris wheels plenty of times in the past, but I had never been so excited to ride one as I was right then.
There was a short line for the attraction. I bought our tickets and we climbed into the colorful metal cart, which I noticed with delight was painted with a cheeful cloud motif. Unlike other Ferris wheels I had been on, this one had old-fashioned style carts with a single seat and an open top. I climbed in, and as Avery sat beside me, my heart fluttered nervously as his hip pressed against mine. The gate closed and we were off.
Though the night was warm, a gentle breeze caressed us as we ascended to the top of the wheel. I closed my eyes, inhaling deeply the heady bouquet of food, sea and ride machinery. After a moment, I turned to Avery.
"Aren't you able to fly much higher than this thing can go?" I joked.
"Well, yes, but... it's nice to rest and take it all in, you know? Flying is fun, and freeing, true enough... but it can be tiring as well," he said, alabaster curls spilling over his shoulders as he looked up at the stars. Recalling how it felt to ride my skateboard, I could relate.
An unexpected sound broke my reverie.
"Hehe, stop it!" a female voice cried from below us.
I looked down, where two women were cuddled together in the next cart, seemingly on a date. Like Avery and I, they were pressed together in the confined space of the cart, and it seemed one of them was taking advantage of the other's immobility. I watched with a cocktail of elation and horror as she squeezed her partner's sides and scribbled fingertips on her kneecaps, making her squeal with laughter.
"Whatever they're doing down there sounds like fun," said Avery, elbowing me playfully. His nudge to my sensitive ribs sent a shockwave through my whole body, and it was all I could do to endure it without jumping, petrified to tip him off.
"I am going to DIE. How does this keep happening?!" I thought, feeling in that moment as though I were a character in the story of a tickle-obsessed blogger.
"H-haha, yeah, I think they're on a date," I choked.
"Are we on a date, too?" asked Avery, his innocent eyes now trained on me.
Sweat broke out along my hairline, my palms slick as I gripped the lap bar, my heart pumping like an engine piston. In my panic, my internal monologue rang out.
"Say something, quick! If you take too long to answer, it might make things awkward!"
"What do I say! What if I say it's a date and it makes him uncomfortable!"
"What if you say it isn't and he's crushed because he feels the same way you do!"
"BOTH OF THESE OPTIONS SUCK!"
"Do you want us to be?" I asked, summoning all of my courage to look him in the face. Even with his altered visage, behind those eyes, it was still him. There was no going back, now. Whatever he said was going to mean something for our relationship... whatever kind of relationship it was going to be.
"Hehe, well, I... I'll admit, I'm... I'm quite fond of you. But, I've never done this before, especially not with a human. I want to keep going, but, do you think we can take it slow? Isn't that... what real people do?"
"Avery, we can take this at whatever pace you want. I've got nothing but time, and I'm not going anywhere. We don't have to do anything you're not ready for," I replied, trying to hide my breathlessness. "And, for the record... I'm quite fond of you, too, cloudboy."
Avery flashed me his signature grin, making me melt like a snowcone in July.
"Then, it's a date."
He shifted a bit. Then he gently leaned his body against mine, and as he did, my heart soared like a kite off its string.

👋 for the book reader asks: 3, 7, and 12?
3. What’s something you read recently and wanted to argue with (either with the book or the author or the fans)?
Maybe the Library at Mount Char - I liked it a lot, but I have a whole collection of books I call “Books about Libraries that are really Private Archives”. LaMC is only the most recent addition that I’ve read.
And it’s true, for a long long time up to the very recent past, libraries were usually private collections of resources which were only available to small affiliated groups. The Public Library is recent idea and the huge swathe of public social services the average (American) Public Library provides shouldn’t fall entirely on this one underfunded organization that can have insufficient training in social work etc. See this excellent Vocational Awe article for more info.
But I still want to read a book with a magical library that’s open to the public, that provides services and educational events, that supports its community, but isn’t hard to find. I really love a lot of these magical private library books, but the ubiquity of access is really important to the modern library (in some places anyway), and I’d love to read something that shows that someday.
5. What book do you love but usually not recommend because it’s weird or intense, etc?
I utterly adore Katherine Addison’s The Witness for the Dead, but it’s so hard to describe (and, as a result, to recommend) - the setting is so lush and the characters are such a product of their setting and life-experiences. It’s a non-violent crime novel. It’s very religious and spiritual. There might be werewolves. There are murderous ghouls. There’s opera and air-ships. It’s a detective novel. It’s a political thriller. It’s slow-moving and deeply kind. The protagonist is having a very long week. It’s only 232 pages long.
12. What book have you re-read most often?
I pick up Connie Willis’s To Say Nothing of the Dog whenever I need a break from other things in life, so probably every few months on the outside 😹 I love that if I ever don’t understand what’s happening, the protagonist understands even less than I do. He’s overtired and overworked, and it’s made him into a soppy romantic who keeps mishearing people but is too polite to ask for clarification. I relate.
Robin McKinley’s The Blue Sword and Tamora Piece’s In The Hand of the Goddess are two other comfort rereads that I have as audiobooks, so they probably are the stories I’ve read/heard the most often by sheer numbers.

The Extraverted Intuitive Type
Whenever intuition predominates, a particular and unmistakable psychology presents itself. Because intuition is orientated by the object, a decided dependence upon external situations is discernible, but it has an altogether different character from the dependence of the sensational type. The intuitive is never to be found among the generally recognized reality values, but he is always present where possibilities exist. He has a keen nose for things in the bud pregnant with future promise. He can never exist in stable, long-established conditions of generally acknowledged though limited value: because his eye is constantly ranging for new possibilities, stable conditions have an air of impending suffocation. He seizes hold of new objects and new ways with eager intensity, sometimes with extraordinary enthusiasm, only to abandon them cold-bloodedly, without regard and apparently without remembrance, as soon as their range becomes clearly defined and a promise of any considerable future development no longer clings to them. As long as a possibility exists, the intuitive is bound to it with thongs of fate. It is as though his whole life went out into the new situation. One gets the impression, which he himself shares, that he has just reached the definitive turning point in his life, and that from now on nothing else can seriously engage his thought and feeling. However reasonable and opportune it may be, and although every conceivable argument speaks in favour of stability, a day will come when nothing will deter him from regarding as a prison, the self-same situation that seemed to promise him freedom and deliverance, and from acting accordingly. Neither reason nor feeling can restrain or discourage him from a new possibility, even though it may run counter to convictions hitherto unquestioned. Thinking and feeling, the indispensable components of conviction, are, with him, inferior functions, possessing no decisive weight; hence they lack the power to offer any lasting. resistance to the force of intuition. And yet these are the only functions that are capable of creating any effectual compensation to the supremacy of intuition, since they can provide the intuitive with that judgment in which his type is altogether lacking. The morality of the intuitive is governed neither by intellect nor by feeling; he has his own characteristic morality, which consists in a loyalty to his intuitive view of things and a voluntary submission to its authority, Consideration for the welfare of his neighbours is weak. No solid argument hinges upon their well-being any more than upon his own. Neither can we detect in him any great respect for his neighbour’s convictions and customs; in fact, he is not infrequently put down as an immoral and ruthless adventurer. Since his intuition is largely concerned with outer objects, scenting out external possibilities, he readily applies himself to callings wherein he may expand his abilities in many directions. Merchants, contractors, speculators, agents, politicians, etc., commonly belong to this type.
Apparently this type is more prone to favour women than men; in which case, however, the intuitive activity reveals itself not so much in the professional as in the social sphere. Such women understand the art of utilizing every social opportunity; they establish right social connections; they seek out lovers with possibilities only to abandon everything again for the sake of a new possibility.
It is at once clear, both from the standpoint of political economy and on grounds of general culture, that such a type is uncommonly important. If well-intentioned, with an orientation to life not purely egoistical, he may render exceptional service as the promoter, if not the initiator of every kind of promising enterprise. He is the natural advocate of every minority that holds the seed of future promise. Because of his capacity, when orientated more towards men than things, to make an intuitive diagnosis of their abilities and range of usefulness, he can also ‘make’ men. His capacity to inspire his fellow-men with courage, or to kindle enthusiasm for something new, is unrivalled, although he may have forsworn it by the morrow. The more powerful and vivid his intuition, the more is his subject fused and blended with the divined possibility. He animates it; he presents it in plastic shape and with convincing fire; he almost embodies it. It is not a mere histrionic display, but a fate.
This attitude has immense dangers—all too easily the intuitive may squander his life. He spends himself animating men and things, spreading around him an abundance of life—a life, however, which others live, not he. Were he able to rest with the actual thing, he would gather the fruit of his labours; yet all too soon must he be running after some fresh possibility, quitting his newly planted field, while others reap the harvest. In the end he goes empty away. But when the intuitive lets things reach such a pitch, he also has the unconscious against him. The unconscious of the intuitive has a certain similarity with that of the sensation-type. Thinking and feeling, being relatively repressed, produce infantile and archaic thoughts and feelings in the unconscious, which may be compared with those of the countertype. They likewise come to the surface in the form of intensive projections, and are just as absurd as those of the sensation-type, only to my mind they lack the other’s mystical character; they are chiefly concerned with quasi-actual things, in the nature of sexual, financial, and other hazards, as, for instance, suspicions of approaching illness. This difference appears to be due to a repression of the sensations of actual things. These latter usually command attention in the shape of a sudden entanglement with a most unsuitable woman, or, in the case of a woman, with a thoroughly unsuitable man; and this is simply the result of their unwitting contact with the sphere of archaic sensations. But its consequence is an unconsciously compelling tie to an object of incontestable futility. Such an event is already a compulsive symptom, which is also thoroughly characteristic of this type. In common with the sensation-type, he claims a similar freedom and exemption from all restraint, since he suffers no submission of his decisions to rational judgment, relying entirely upon the perception of chance, possibilities. He rids himself of the restrictions of reason, only to fall a victim to unconscious neurotic compulsions in the form of oversubtle, negative reasoning, hair-splitting dialectics, and a compulsive tie to the sensation of the object. His conscious attitude, both to the sensation and the sensed object, is one of sovereign superiority and disregard. Not that he means to be inconsiderate or superior—he simply does not see the object that everyone else sees; his oblivion is similar to that of the sensation-type—only, with the latter, the soul of the object is missed. For this oblivion the object sooner or later takes revenge in the form of hypochondriacal, compulsive ideas, phobias, and every imaginable kind of absurd bodily sensation.

The Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle are serviceable detective fiction in themselves if you don't mind bigoted stereotypes in lieu of characterization. A detective story does not have much time and has a lot to say, so most characterization will be extremely stereotypical, with the possible exception of the character of the detective (and even then the demands of serialization are considerable), but the specific kinds of stereotype Doyle uses are quite unpleasant. It is generally not possible for a reader to figure out the mysteries, which almost always hinge on hidden information and counter to the presentation tend to privilege an arbitrary and often highly illogical interpretation of the part of the evidence that is provided, but you do occasionally get to feel clever (I knew it was a jellyfish!), and the stories manage to build suspense well enough.
But of course I did not read the entirety of Sherlock Holmes because I wanted to enjoy some detective fiction, really. I persisted in reading it because I felt like it was an interesting testament to elements of late 19th century British society, and who doesn't love the deranged ramblings of an empire that doesn't quite understand it's doomed? I have touched on the use of bigoted stereotypes. I do not think dwelling on Doyle's moral status is particularly useful, though it is worth remarking that on a handful of occasions he attempts to be actively progressive with his writing. From other 19th century British work I would guess that the beliefs implied by the stories are reasonably similar to the beliefs of 19th century Britain, except in the case of a handful of Doyle's eccentricities that are mostly identifiable from the text.
Doyle gives us an image of a society which is obsessed with phrenology, race science, misogyny, and free trade. I do not mean merely that the narrative treats phrenology, race science, and misogynistic pseudopsychology as useful pieces of information about the world, though it does to a genuinely shocking degree (it also validates graphology, because Arthur Conan Doyle was just incredibly gullible in general). What I mean is that when Arthur Conan Doyle looks for some arbitrary and thematically irrelevant topic of discussion for some men of culture to embark on, they will more likely than not discuss the latest developments in those fields. Is this just a particular preoccupation on the part of the author? I don't have a representative sample of other texts from the time to compare to, but it sure is remarkable.
The thing I find interesting about Sherlock Holmes is that the point is at least nominally the immense power of reason. So it is interesting to observe which people reason is attributed to, and which people it is not. In particular, reason is only rarely displayed by foreigners, especially not displayed by non-whites, extremely rare if at all possible among the lower classes, and highly unusual in women (children are not sufficiently prominent to determine). Any intelligence or competence displayed by these groups is almost certain to be described as the result of "cunning", probably by reference to animal metaphors. Reason is predominantly the province of Anglo-Saxon upper-middle and higher class men, though of course they may or may not actually display it. As a side-note, it doesn't seem that what we would now regard as mental illness is regarded as particularly significant in this respect, it is not necessarily disqualifying and the absence of it is no guarantee of ability. Mental illness is socially constructed, what else is new.
There is an interesting quirk as regards America, actually. In America, you do not need to be high in the class structure to be rational. It appears that America is considered not a classless society but one in which class is less important, even as regards mental faculties. There is another peculiarity of the United States in the novels, there is one story in which Holmes proclaims himself a partisan of Anglo-American unification and world conquest under a flag incorporating both the Stars and Stripes and Union Jack. This was a real but fringe position at the time, based on the much more common (and also evident in the stories) belief in the superiority of the supposed Anglo-Saxon race. One of the traces of Doyle's more esoteric political beliefs there.
I think the a priori exclusion of people from reason displayed in the Holmes stories is a matter worth considering for those who feel reason has been unfairly maligned by society. If you were similarly excluded, how would you feel about the social institutions of reason and reasonableness? Irrationalism is a refuge of scoundrels, but is it possible that at least some of the critics of reason correctly judge that they are considered to be excluded in this way? Food for thought, perhaps.

Needle exchange programs are rare in Texas. A San Antonio group is proving they can work.
The Corazón Harm Reduction program launched in early December [2021] with a two-year, $780,000 grant from UT Health San Antonio through the Bexar County Harm Reduction Initiative and other federal funding. It's one of few programs in Bexar County that provides both mobile outreach and a drop-in center for services that aim to reduce negative health consequences associated with drug use, namely fatal overdoses, disease and infection. Outreach workers provide needle exchange, wound kits, bleach kits for disinfection, strips to test drugs for deadly fentanyl, condoms, HIV and hepatitis C testing and Narcan, a life-saving overdose remedy. [...] Despite studies that show needle distribution programs reduce rates of HIV and hepatitis C infection, they are controversial, with many perceiving the practice to be enabling more illegal drug use. A bill that would have allowed needle exchange programs in Texas' largest counties passed the state House of Representatives in 2021 but was not taken up by the Senate. Madelein Santibanez, the program's director, argues that by providing these services and building relationships, the program's staff can earn the trust of people struggling with addiction, building on that trust to steer them to recovery programs or housing. "With harm reduction, our goal isn't recovery ... it's reducing the stigma and empowering clients to [access] services that reduce the harms that come with substance abuse and other high-risk activities." But recovery is a welcome side effect, and the key to fostering that was hiring outreach workers and peer support coaches who have themselves experienced addiction, said Santibanez. "Our coaches can say, 'Hey, you know, there's a safer way to inject.'"
Barriers and trauma
[...]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's unclear if the woman or any of the people the outreach team met that day will ever ask for help in kicking their addiction, said Claudia Delfin, who leads the program’s peer support team. "And that's OK." "A lot of them have different kinds of barriers," said Delfin, a transgender woman who struggled with addiction in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez before becoming a drug counselor. She's been in recovery for more than a decade, has received numerous awards for her social work. "We use our motivational interview skills [that] we learn in recovery coach training, how to engage and encourage them to come out," she said, "because they ... have a lot of trauma." Hiring peer support staff for the program was an unusual experience, said Gavin Rogers, executive director of Corazón. "It was the first time I had to set a rule that past heroin use was a job requirement to get a job," he said. "Sure, a master's degree from some grad school is great, but lived experience and knowing the pathways and pitfalls of true recovery is what will make the biggest impact and transform lives." [...]
Tumblr media
[...]
The long road to legal needle exchange and implementation
In 2007, Bexar County became the only county in Texas authorized to test an official needle exchange program, but a lack of support from previous district attorneys meant the pilot program stalled for more than a decade. Meanwhile, the established programs run by religious programs continued to operate underground. [...] The services are intended to prevent the costly downstream results of drug use: HIV, hepatitis C, abscesses and other illnesses among a population that rarely has health insurance. [...] "I'm happy it's legal in Bexar County, but it's puzzling to me that it's not legal throughout Texas," she said. "Harm reduction initiatives have been successful for decades in other states and other countries, there's no reason to believe that it won't be successful here in Texas." By giving drug users such as Maria clean syringes, Corazon's outreach workers helped pave the way for her to pursue the path to recovery and permanent housing. That's the ultimate goal of the county's harm reduction initiative, even if it might seem counterintuitive to some. "I have to admit, it takes some getting used to," Corazon's Rogers said. "Just like in the '80s when sex ed was moving past abstinence, many people assumed condom dispensing would lead to more sexual promiscuity and harm, when in fact it leads to less harm."

How does Acquire.AI guide businesses through the AI revolution?
Brands are finding it difficult to navigate the growing AI landscape. It can be hard to know where to start leveraging AI in your own organization. As a consulting service, Acquire.AI harnesses ongoing market analysis and practical experience to guide brands in pinpointing areas where AI can significantly enhance efficiencies, and then we help them implement it.
What benefits does your vendor-agnostic approach offer to clients?
Our team of experts take a vendor-neutral consultative approach to provide solutions that range from automated quality assurance to advanced agent assistive technologies and workflow optimization tools, all geared towards streamlining operations and elevating the customer experience. With so many opportunities to leverage AI, and new solutions popping up each day, our clients benefit from customized recommendations, in-depth market knowledge and solutions that are tailored to align with their unique business objectives and standards.
How do you envision the future of AI impacting the finance sector?
We’re seeing great innovation with loan approvals and automating that process. AI can take depersonalized historic data across all borrowers, their approvals, their typical questionnaire data points and match that against previous payment and lifetime value trends to highly predict what sort of customer they’ll be years from now. The data and modeling that can be performed in real-time is far superior from both a speed and accuracy level than what humans can achieve. This is huge for the industry because it makes the loan process much faster and smoother for customers and borrowers alike.
In what ways can AI transform healthcare services?
AI can and will transform healthcare services by improving patient outcomes, reducing costs, and enabling more precise and timely interventions. AI algorithms improve diagnostic accuracy through advanced imaging and pattern recognition techniques, leading to early and more accurate diagnosis of diseases like cancer. Patient treatment plans can be tailored to an individual’s genetic profile through the use of AI profiling services, greatly improving efficacy and reducing side effects. The growth in the adoption of wearable devices and sensors that collect continuous health data improves patient outcomes with real-time monitoring and data analysis that can deliver early detection and intervention outcomes. AI computing can accelerate the arduous and expensive drug discovery process through its ability to quickly analyze vast datasets and identify potential therapeutic compounds. Even simply using AI to automate healthcare administrative tasks, such as appointment scheduling and patient triage, can improve efficiency and patient experience.
What role does AI play in optimizing logistics and supply chain management?
AI plays a significant role in optimizing many aspects of logistics and supply chain management. By analyzing large volumes of data from various sources, including market trends, social media, weather forecasts, and historical sales data, AI vastly improves forecasting accuracy and demand planning. The use of AI in automating warehouse operations via intelligent robots for picking and packing delivers large efficiency gains. AI is used to improve route optimization for delivery, meaning greater reductions in delivery times and in fuel consumption. AI platforms can predict maintenance needs for transportation assets, preventing costly downtimes. These applications help reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction by ensuring timely delivery and minimizing downtime.
How is the energy sector benefiting from AI advancements?
The energy sector benefits greatly from AI’s contribution to demand planning, delivery optimization, and predictive maintenance. Smart grid technologies use AI to forecast and balance supply and demand, improving grid efficiency. AI aids in forecasting renewable energy production from sources like wind and solar, enabling more efficient integration into the power grid. AI algorithms predict equipment failures, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. These advancements lead to more reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy systems.
Can you discuss any challenges businesses face when integrating AI solutions?
In today’s challenging business environment, brands are finding that AI-driven solutions are now a necessity. But, they’re overwhelmed by the number of AI solutions and are constrained by time to do the necessary research and testing. All the hype surrounding new and evolving AI technologies further complicates the decision-making process, making it difficult for brands to identify where to begin and how to strategically deploy AI for maximum impact.
At Acquire.AI, we pride ourselves on our ability to tailor AI solutions to meet the specific needs of diverse industries. We customize our strategies by conducting a thorough analysis of each sector’s unique challenges and opportunities. This involves understanding the specific business processes, analyzing the business through structured and unstructured data, considering regulatory constraints, and the overall competitive landscape. All of this enables us to implement innovative and effective AI strategies that drive growth and efficiency on behalf of our clients.
How does Acquire.AI customize AI strategies for diverse industry needs?
As a consulting service, all of our strategies are customized according to our clients’ needs. Taking a vendor-agnostic approach helps us do this. Additionally, we can act as your lead, an advisor, system integrator, service provider, or all of the above–whatever will benefit our clients the most. Our business model is highly flexible so that we can find the best fit for each business scenario.
What are the key factors in successfully implementing AI in business processes?
We have a multistep approach to implementing AI: it starts with a consultation and diagnostic deep dive, then customized recommendations, implementation and optimization. Each step of this process is crucial for success so we have a strong foundation in place and a runway for continued improvement. Businesses should then analyze AI success by three categories: operational efficiency, brand and customer sentiment, and overall business growth like customer share and cost per acquisition.
Looking ahead, what emerging AI technologies do you find most promising for business applications?
I think it’s important to take stock of what there is now and perfect it before moving too far ahead too fast, so I’m excited about the continued improvement of learning models and data processing. It will allow us to create exceptional personalized experiences for our clients. The more data that an AI model has access to, and the more accurately it organizes it, the more you can personalize services and communication that work better for specific customer types and cohorts.
Thank you for the great interview, readers who wish to learn more should visit Acquire BPO.

some of my oc x canon musings under the cut, i don't know how to properly introduce this couple so there will be no introduction only insanity
(Tomoe Hōzuki is lana skye's original japanese name) (also this takes place after Umaru got PICd out for mafia connections and is now a mailman, and Tomoe is out of prison and works as a detective again)
tomomaru isn't just "well the same brand of fucked up thing happened to them both so they should be together for that sole reason", its also Umaru's insane devotion and admiration finally being directed at a right person for once, he knows that for sure now, – she's a warrior of justice and truth, strict, firm, deeply thoughtful, commited to getting her ideals right and having no reason to deceive – and now that he knows he won't be serving evil, he is actually more than ready to serve again. just this time it wouldn't be either the "blindly accepting your orders" type of servitude or the "quietly providing you with everything you might need" type of servitude, not the "politely not showing my evergrowing fear and exceeding wish of death at your sleepover so that I don't ruin it" type and not the "stubbornly and covertly trying to get you to finally admit that you're human so that I can finally help you" type. not the "swallowing abuse because of devotion and or admiration" type. not "forever in debt for having you in my life".
his acts of service will be small acts of help just because he can – helping her carry two bags of groceries to her house, holding the door for her, hanging her laundry when he's already over, watching over her house while she's on a trip. his acts of service will be small, silly and effortless things to make her feel cared for – enough to make her happy, not big enough not to scare her – making her favorite tea perfectly after the first few times of having to ask, making tea unprovoked to go along with a conversation, when she's cold or feeling tired, offering her a bite of his taco at the bus stop, knowing she's probably going to refuse, but smiling so genuinely anyway; leaving an envelope with a bar of classy german chocolate in her mailbox once, accompanying it with a silly drawing of his face so that she wouldn't have to worry about who its from. his service will be ready to risk to stay by her side and have her back in a fishy case or carry out small spying missions for her detective needs. it will be him unconditionally supporting her in what she does and stands for and still being able to correct her when she's wrong, because for the first time in his life, his devotion isn't based on fear.
tomomaru is also about perpetual caretakers finally being cared for, the stunned, reluctant acceptance and having to manage gratitude like math and not fall to their feet or walk off without a thank you in embarassment. it's about being two lonely, distrustful, socially isolated people and being able to relax around each other so easily it beats any butterflies in the stomach by a long shot. it's about being conditioned to only be able to express your love through sacrifices or service and your circumstances and secrets forcing you to keep a distance from loved ones, then meeting someone new and not have to do literally anything all that hard to be close to them – it just happens, you don't have to do much to connect, no sacrifices or services – and you end up still doing, because you just want to, because its them.
tomomaru isn't just "well the same brand of fucked up thing happened to them both so they should be together for that sole reason", its also Tomoe's newfound deep respect for a man who doesn't even really understand the severity of the hell he's been through, but he's made it through all these years still intact; his situation is making her wonder if she would have been able to, if she'd have to. and he just shrugs it off as if it was easy – as is if it's not anything to be proud of. she sees so much in him that he doesn't even acknowledge in himself – she sees that he's an amazingly well-educated person, strong-willed and hard-working, spending a sizeable percentage of his life studying for vastly different professions and gaining a thousand more various skills; she sees how well he understands other people and gets along with them, no matter how they approach him or talk to him, dealing much more easily than most people with disdain, condescendence, mockery, being able to help anyone and explain all sorts of things to all sorts of people. she sees how he cares more than anything about helping and not hurting – a true doctor at heart, holding himself to the highest possible moral standard and trying his best to cling on to his purpose through all adversity, surviving another day just to be able to help someone who needs it. she respects it in him immensely, seeing him as one of the most exceptional people in her life, and she wants to make him see just how much meaning he has. even more importantly, she wants him by her side and in her life.
she wants to talk to him, to know him, to keep in touch and think about him at random times throughout her day and smile every time; to get to know him better, to learn him like science, peeling him layer by layer. what does he think about the hunger games? does he believe in free will? what's his favorite weather? what's his warmest memory? does he think its possible to achieve full and ultimate justice? does he think they should try? what does he want for dinner tonight? and after she knows him, she wants him to keep her company. to keep him company. no longer having to talk, sharing a peaceful life, still talking anyway, enamored with each other's worlds. resting quietly together.

Why You Need To Seek Rehab
Tumblr media
Usually, an addicted person doesn’t know he is an addict and considers himself a casual user or drinker. However, the family members, significant others, and friends detect the warning signs way early than the addict himself. But acknowledging the problem is difficult, in fact, for some, they hit the rock bottom until they realize the problem. Although, early detection and treatment of addiction enhance the recovery and remission chances, however, deeply rooted addictions can also be treated.
If you are planning on seeking rehab for your or your loved one’s addiction but have some doubts, then this article will definitely answer your questions and clear your queries.
Recovery vs. Rehab
Recovery and rehab are often used interchangeably, however, both concepts held slightly different notions. Recovery is the lived experience of a person and it is a process of change that helps the individual to improve health, have a purpose in life, have a supportive, loving, and helpful social circle, and strive to reach full potential.
On the other hand, rehab means the treatment services offered to the person during the process of recovery. Thus, rehab is part of the recovery. Rehab can be inpatient or outpatient where extensive medical and psychological services are provided to help through the process of recovery. The recovery and rehabilitation process is different for every person.
Stages of recovery
Recovery is not a smooth journey. A person has to go through various ups and down during the process. Following are four major stages of this wild ride.
1. Treatment initiation
This is the most important phase because you let go of your guard, work on your denial and ambivalence and move past your fears. Seeking help is very brave but a well-matched counselor or therapist makes a great difference and can smooth the process. Detoxification, medical treatment, and therapy are the important components of recovery.
2. Early abstinence
Early abstinence is roughly marked as one month to one year of no drug use. You will experience withdrawal, psychological dependence, cravings, and urges. However, your counselor will help you manage your cravings, identify and avoid the triggers and change your habits and lifestyle in general.
3. Sustained abstinence
Sustained abstinence is the period of one to five years of complete abstinence. This stage mainly focuses on long-term remission. Your underlying issues leading to addiction will be addressed in your therapy. You will also learn anger management, assertiveness, social skills, building relationships, and managing finances.
4. Stable abstinence
A person enters this stage when he is drug-free for more than five years. At this stage, a person developed a new and healthy lifestyle and habit, and now doesn’t experience cravings and urges, can handle triggers, and is excelling in personal life. Most people also choose to mentor and sponsor new recovering addicts and guide them through the process with their experiences.
During the recovery self-love and self-care and secondly, a strong social circle will help you a lot. You can learn to love yourself unconditionally with all your flaws and shortcomings. However, having a trustworthy and lifting social network is a blessing. If your loved one is going through addiction recovery, your support and care can go a long way. Following are some tips for the friends and families of recovering addicts.
Tips for family and friends
• Stop blaming. If you seriously want to help your loved one, talk to him. Have dialogue and explain your concerns.
• Learn about co-dependency and enabling. These are the practices that are common in the household of addicts but are not realized by family members. Co-dependency is a relationship pattern where a person is emotionally dependent on and controlled by a person with pathological condition. It is possible that whenever you talk about the addiction of your husband, he threatens to leave you so you don’t confront him.
o Enabling is a phenomenon where you enable the addiction of the person by facilitating him by hiding his problem from family and friends, lying for him to his boss, or giving him money for drugs.
o These both patterns escalate the addiction and maintain the problem. So, work on your behavior patterns as well for the sake of yourself and your loved one.
• Be prepared to practice tough love. Make him realize that you love him but will not tolerate his addiction.
• Actively involved in the recovery and rehabilitation process. Drive him to the sessions, join the therapist in sessions when asked for, help him practice homework and be present for him.
• Remember that recovery is a lifelong journey and you need to be there for them.
Recovery from addiction is demanding and challenging. However, the right people and therapist make the process smooth and structured with definite goals, aims and accomplishments.

The NPMD solution gives enterprises the capability to prevent network downtime before it happens. Some of these benefits are listed below: Preventing network downtimeĪvailability is a real concern to all enterprises. NPMD solution contribute to the enterprise success by providing it with many benefits. Moreover, the availability and safety are not the only features of the NPMD solution. So the guarantee of the availability and safety of the company network should be taken into consideration to provide the best experience for the company clients. Therefore, every business should use a Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics (NPMD) solution, regardless of how much it costs, because the destruction of the company network will cost much more than the NPMD solution cost. Nowadays, technology is used by every enterprise, and the entire work relies on the internet, so if anything happens to the network, the whole work will be affected, regardless of whether it is single site, multi-site or global WAN network.

Alaska got one of the country's most lost home-schooling laws
Alaska law is silent on the topic of unsupervised home-schooling families. If a parent or guardian chooses to educate their child, that child is not legally required to enroll in a public school. The legislature enacted that clause in 1997. Those families don't qualify for state aid unless their children are enrolled in an approved alternative educational model, such as a charter school or a home study course. The government does not maintain a database of their identities or academic achievements. They are exempt from enrolling in the educational system of their residence or any other location. Homeschooling In Alaska Recent news reports about two teens who turned up at the Homeschooling In Alaska 2015 and the filing of negligence charges against their parents brought Alaska's hands-off policy of independent homeschooling, among the most casual in the country, into the limelight. A 16- and 17-year-old girl claimed her parents locked her and her sister in the cold, damp basement without food or drink. A charging document filed by an Alaska police detective states that neither child ever attended public school & received minimal home instruction from their mother. The detective claimed that a lack of "childhood socialization" was to blame for the girls' inability to demonstrate the typical skills of a child their age during an interview. Unfortunately, the Anchorage School District had no information on the teenagers. Outside of a private school or distance program, Homeschool in Alaska is legal without needing parents to notify the state. There has been both praise and criticism for Alaska's approach to homeschooling. Proponents of the measure claim it protects parents' constitutionally protected freedom to decide how and where their children are educated, while opponents call for additional oversight. Lack of knowledge regarding the quantity The number of Alaskan families who choose to educate their children even in a formal school setting is unknown. Eric Fry, an Alaska Department of Education & Early Development spokesman, stated that he could not provide any estimation. Director of the state's Office for Children's Services Christy Lawton emailed that she does not have any information about the number of children the office had seen who were not in school. Indeed, home-schooled kids in Alaska are not required to enroll in the state's public school system. There are stricter jurisdictions - Homeschooling parents must meet the standards set by eleven states. For instance, some jurisdictions mandate that both parents hold at least a high school graduation. Based on the Massachusetts alliance, although some states mandate specific courses to be taught, others mandate standardized testing or other assessment forms for all students. Coalition for Responsible Home - The education director argued that Alaska's regulations should be more stringent. One way to check if home-schooled kids are learning is to require their parents to submit a portfolio or standardized test results once a year. Responsibility is the "fundamental keyword" in this context. The education of the students is the primary concern. There is no evidence of the success of autonomous home-scholars because they are not being monitored. No state mandates or standardized testing for students. Hirshberg noted that some home-schooled kids could "outperform anyone," but there are also those who aren't ready for the real world.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Effectiveness and productivity are enhanced by a healthy mental state in all spheres of life, including work, learning, and interpersonal interactions. An intelligent individual may easily adjust to changes in their environment. He is able to handle pressure without losing his composure in his thinking. In spite of obstacles and difficulties in life, his mental fortitude maintains him steady and unwavering. Maintaining the strength of your relationships depends heavily on your mental wellness. People with good mental health are better able to manage stress and uphold the stability of their relationships. Their minds are powerful and capable enough to withstand the intense competition and succeed in achieving their objectives.
If we aggressively promote the reasons why mental health awareness is important, we can set up stronger support services for people with mental diseases. The likelihood of recovery in cases of mental illness might rise as a result because it would lead to a more compassionate and tolerant global culture. We can change the world and cure it one person at a time by being knowledgeable about mental health and educating others about it.
