I normally don't vague post about other people (and I'm not really here, even) but someone in the tag suggested that Jack would make a better Team Leader than Yusei and it made me realize something, in part, about why people think that Yusei is boring.

tl;dr: Yusei isn't boring; he was written as the MC in the wrong genre.

See, Shonen protagonists typically have the following personality traits: loud, brash, hot-headed, sometimes abrasive. Yusei is none of those things, and Jack is ALL of them. Which, I'm sure, is what led that person to say that Jack would make the better leader and what leads so many people (who are mostly only fans of Shonen anime) to say that Yusei is boring. He doesn't fit their expectations of what a Shonen protag is supposed to look like, therefore he's boring.

But the thing is, if you popped him into, say, a Slice of Life, he'd be perfectly at home (well...except for the Trademark YGO Hair anyway) and well-loved by the fan base. I can say this with fair certainty because I've at least never seen anyone say that Natsume Takashi (Natsume's Book of Friends) is boring in any way, and honestly the two of them have very similar temperaments. The difference is, obviously, the genre of their respective stories.

Slice of Life allows for its protags to be softer-spoken, more reserved; Shonen often does not.

It's time people stopped saying that Yusei is boring and just admit that they like loud, brash characters as opposed to quiet ones, and that Yusei just doesn't fit what they expect from a Shonen protagonist.

He's not boring; he was just written for the wrong genre.

I have two of them

1: Steven x Peter isn't that bad honestly. Imo at least. It doesn't deserve the amount of hating it gets. honestly, it's more of a feeling I get when I read and see their interactions: the fact that jack always seeks his father's approval; we don't know much about jack's early life (before yjs), other than when his father has saved him from almost being sold into slavery and when his hands were about to be cut off, so the imagination can travel far.

it is also true that from these two events we understand that Teague has always been careful to keep an eye on Jack, after all he is his kid. I've heard multiple times that these events happened because Teague dont pay attention to Jack, but I think it's the opposite:

I mean, if they were on land, Teague was most likely resupplying the ship. considering that Jack was a 6/8 year old child it is normal that he was curious about what was around him. and if Teague arrived just in time to save him, he surely must have been worried when he realized that his son was missing. he could have easily sent a member of his crew to look for him, but he went directly: he must have panicked when he realized that his son was no longer near him (like any parent)

Teague is described in several ways, most notably: distant (from Jack's perspective) and protective.

Teague is a highly sought-after pirate and his apparent distance was likely a way to keep Jack safe. after all it would have been the smartest move, if anyone knew of their close family relationship, Jack would always be in danger of being kidnapped, without the possibility of self-reliance. not even his crew is apparently aware that jack is his son (teague doesn't even trust his crew?)

Honestly, it's no secret that Teague cares about his son.

Jack is called Teague's welp and Teague's protégé several times by all the people who see him, so Teague definitely took pains to get the word to spread out so people knew not to get too close to him or there would be consequences (and It's well known that Teague isn't "nice" to anyone who annoys him if you know what I mean.)

oh god most of my google drive is full of fic ideas that either wouldn't do well or I just don't feel like writing lmao. one example is that I love coming up with aus of movies but rarely do I actually wanna write them out entirely. one movie au I think about so often but would never get around to writing is an au of the movie Push. Push is not a very good film. it's fun! but it's not good lmao. the concept was SUPER cool to me though. it's a movie about people who have psychic powers that are hunted down by an evil government organization yknow the drill, but the plot is about a guy in his 20s who is a 'mover' (has telekinesis) that's kind of down on his luck and doesn't have much of a life. he gets dragged into a plot to steal a metal briefcase because a 13 year old 'watcher' (sees the future) shows up on his doorstep and tells him she sees the two of them teaming up to find this case and she's convinced it has a shit ton of money in it. a lot of other stuff happens but the main two characters have such older brother/little sister energy that i literally can't stop thinking about crimeboysing it. it would be so fun but I'll never write it unfortunately.

game theory time! game 1: doors (tw:dr#gs and spoilers)

alright, i mentioned doing this in the past and ill keep my word. ill start off with doors because yes lets get into itttttt!!!!!

ok, so if you dont know about doors, its a very interesting horror game involving doors! some rooms have keys you have to find, some have puzzles, and some if you arent careful lead to death, yay! its very well made and isnt like those trashy horror games you see like those escape obbies with jumpscares. the game can be played with a group of 4 in a public server, but 20 max if a private server. you can go alone though. in doors, theres several entities that try to kill you in cold blood. some are guaranteed to come due to assigned rooms, others come for sure because theyre too common to not happen once, and some are rare to get. theres also several supplies you can buy or find to help you such as: the lighter, flashlight, pills, band aids (can only be found), batteries (for the flashlight, can only be found), lock pick, room key (cant be bought), painting (found in puzzle rooms), library books (found in room 50), code for the door (found in room 50), and the electrical room key (found at door 100). i have theories on literally everything so no more talking! remember the entities i mentioned? lets get into the most common one, rush. how to tell if rush is quite easy: flickering lights, 2+ closets in the room, hearing lights breaking far away or noises running at you. being able to hear him gives you a chance to survive. while in certain rooms hiding a certain way helps you survive still, hiding under a bed or in a closet is the most secure (yes, theres a challenge to not use closets or beds in doors, and yes it can be done with a bit of luck). needless to say, its quite easy to survive rush. speaking of closets... hide! hide hangs out in closets and is a way to not allow people to camp closets. stay in the closet too long (or under the bed) and you get text on your screen. dont listen to the text, and you'll be pushed out and lose some health (hide is not at door 50 or 100, so no need to worry about him there). however, hide is very bitchy at... ambush! ambush is like the brother of rush, but ambush is 6x faster and comes back. he'll run back into the room 2-6 times (dont be scared by this! i mean once he runs in, second he goes out!). this does mean staying in closets the whole time is how to live, right? wrong! after hide pushes you out, theres a timer to go back in. to survive, go in when hes there, wait to see if he rebounds (you'll still hear him if hes going to), and go back in if you hear him coming back. i forgot to mention: the only difference in looking for if ambush is coming or rush is the noises (their noises are very different btw). ambush is very rare to get early game, and most likely will come around rooms 70-90. on the topic of rare monsters to get in runs... halt! halt is very rare but you'll be able to tell from the room before. the lights will flicker, but rush or ambush wont come. when you enter the next door then, you'll be transported to halts hallway. ill be honest, when i played at first, i couldnt survive him, it was just too hard. however, i learned how. while going forward, glitching effects will appear on your screen telling you to run away. afterwards, a ghost like figure starts coming closer. dont turn away from the ghost, but start walking backwards. when its gone, keep going forward. keep doing this until your out the hallway. thats really all i got on halt. another rare monster i can talk about is... jack! he has a chance of coming out of numberless doors or closets! he doesn't kill you at all, but he does jump scare you. in the next room, it'll look red and any windows would have blood red rain. it basically looks like a murder room.

im getting lazy so im just gonna do the rest in here. screech appears in the dark without any lights (it makes a noise to show a dark room), timothy can jump out at you whenever you open a drawer, guiding light happens in dark rooms if it thinks you need help, figure happens in room 50 and 100, shadow is very rare and doesnt do shit, window can be found in the lobby and sometimes if you look at the windows quick enough, glitch happens if you glitch out, eyes takes your health if you look at it, and seek has fire music and chases you at a random door between 35-40. so whats the theory? i wont get big into in on this post but ill reblog when i feel it and shit. the pills i mentioned? they're drugs, and the monsters arent actually real or theyre people who are hiding out in this abandoned hotel. no regular pills make you speedy like how the pills do, and it just can kinda make sense with all the crazy shit. anyways bye ill reblog laterrrrr

also re: jack originally being in his 30s: i mean, technically he still could be? cmm was early-mid 30s during filming, i think? i've just always thought of him as being 26 during s1 (between peggy, canonically 25, and daniel, canonically 27) because cmm's right in the middle, agewise, of hatwell and enver, but there's absolutely nothing in canon saying how old he is. if it means anything, michael's probably 30 or so during season 2 (not the flashbacks; i refuse to believe that man is dead)...

I guess I was just surprised by the casting call cos I tend to write him a little younger, closer to Daniel's age. Both myself and a few people I've talked to tend to assume that he basically graduated not long before Pearl Harbour; I've even seen suggestions that he dropped out of college to enlist. So to see that he is actually a good few years older than Peggy and Daniel really brings a new perspective to his character.

Also—and this just came to mind, but the fact that he is a good few years older than Daniel really adds a new layer of desperation to his arc in s2, no? It would add a layer ot why he is so eager to do as Vernon says and get in with the 'right crowd'. Not only is it partly in his nature to follow and please an authority figure, but one of his main goals post war is to make a name for himself. To establish himself. He is supposed to be a Functional Adult, and yet here he is, working for what Vernon describes is a dying organisation. Barely able to keep a handle on his own subordinates. Have an almost-canon drinking problema and still burdened by trauma and likely PTSD. While Daniel—a disabled veteran, likely a working class kid who doesn't have the shiny background and connections that Jack has—rose from the butt of the office to a whole regional chief himself in a year.

I'm also definitely thinking about that Jack-Michael parallel from a few days ago. I dont' think the writers were planning that far in advance when they decided that Jack is in his 30s, but puts him much closer in age to Michael than Peggy. Which just makes for even more Annoying Older Brother Parallels :D

(btw where are you getting Daniel's canon age. I've been quietly screaming for two years over the fact that AOS S7 gave us his whole damn personnel file and still we don't have a date of birth.)

i think tumblr is messing w me again 🤨 "bad request" let me talking about raiden pls. sent an ask about being distraught by the scene where raiden begs snake not to leave him alone in mgs4. that scene nearly made me cry bc raiden is just. so vulnerable AND SNAKE JUST LEAVES HIM CMON MAN. other than that idk if you play pokemon or not but do you have any idea what to do with 5 shiny larvitar because i dont.

unfortunately i do not play pokemon and i have no idea what to do with five shiny larvitar especially on account of i have no idea what those even are. my pokemon knowledge is very limited and due to a wild turn of events most of it i literally only know because of metal gear. so yeah.

and YEAH dear god that scene haunts me like the whole thing is just so awful. Except for sunny. Sunny is never awful and she's so good in that scene. she is just trying to protect her big brother!!!!!! (this is one of my core beliefs about metal gear btw in case you somehow didn't come across it. raiden and sunny are siblings. i don't care that they aren't blood related or that he's two decades older than she is. they are siblings. i know siblings when i see them and those two... they just are.)

but aside from sunny being the smartest person in the room and also the best kid ever, there is nothing about that scene that doesn't torment me

first of all snake why the fuck would you think it was a good idea to take a heavily injured man who is still recovering from the fact that HIS OWN BODY (which isn't even really his own, dear god i could get into that for paragraphs and paragraphs) TRIED TO KILL HIM back onto the battlefield. he almost died and he's recovering in a body that doesn't belong to him and is 3/4ths of the REASON he almost died leave him alone. he's practically your nephew would it kill you to act like you give a fuck.

thankfully sunny puts a quick stop to that (i think about how this small child with anxiety put herself in between her big brother and solid snake all the time i think about 'no! jack can't go. he needs to rest!' all the time) but raiden has no self-preservation left!!!!!!! he wants to die!!!!!!!!!!!! and the poor guy has just had it hammered into him over and over again that as far as most people he knows are concerned he's worth exactly as much as an inanimate object, his value is in how well he can kill and the moment he loses that he'll be worthless, he's just expendable, and as if being told that constantly wasn't enough they literally cut him apart and rebuilt him with a body created solely to fight. he's been so dehumanized at this point and his dynamic with snake is already so fucked up that he's just like sure why the fuck not this is all i'm good for anyway so <3

and then of course snake is like wait actually no which would be good on its own except of course the way he goes about it is a disaster. i mean first of all this guy who KNOWS the deal with rose is like hmm okay but consider: rose. which is a whole lot. said it before and i'll say it again

like no wonder raiden makes this face. i would too

and then the freakout continues but he can't even stand up on his own and he has to use snake entirely for support and he looks so young and like he's about to cry and you know what he has a goddamn right to. but then in a move that probably wasn't meant to be symbolic but is in my heart snake fails to support him and he collapses. and he just pours out his heart and begs not to be left alone and he's obviously so scared like augh man who can't figure out what he exists for except to be a weapon not being allowed to fight of course he's terrified of being left alone he can't do the only thing anyone's ever told him he's good for and i feel like because he's sick and scared and still kinda dying this translates in his head as a 'he was going to let me help but then he realized how useless i actually am’ thing. being forcibly converted into a cyborg did not help our boy much in terms of black and white thinking about himself as a weapon. fuck the patriots.

so he pours his heart out like this and is holding on to snake and pleading with him not to leave him alone (like practically everyone else in his life)

and does snake reassure him? NO. he just stares at him for like idk ten seconds and then says 'this is my fight. my destiny' and that's it. no sympathy, no reassurance, nothing. bare minimum could've looked at this guy who just fucking shattered in front of you and begged you not to leave him alone and said SOMETHING kind but nope and as soon as he says that raiden just closes his eyes and passes out like he only managed to stay awake for this

and the resignation kills me

like the sheer hopelessness of it all. just kind of this oh. okay. [passes out because what else is there to do]

like it genuinely has the vibes of he was FORCING himself to stay awake and try to stand and pretend he was fine because he has nothing left except to fight and if he can't do that then there's nothing left for him at all (y'know, from his perspective) and its explicit canon that he really looks up to snake so this whole scene is just him desperately trying to keep the one person whose approval he still craves from leaving him behind even if that means he has to destroy himself in the process and the moment he realizes that nothing he says or does is going to change anything and he's going to be left there out of commission unable to do the one thing that people have wanted from him his entire life, the thing the body he's trapped in was literally made for, he just... gives up.

and it fucking destroys me.

as you can probably tell. this scene makes me crazy. i've written way too much about it and i regret none of it whatsoever.

on a slightly happier note this bit also feels so symbolic to me

he can't fight. he can't even stand. and the only person supporting him is the one who couldn't care less if he can fight or not. the one who's spent this whole time just wanting him to be okay, to hell with anything else

he doesn't see it because he's practically incapable of imagining anyone could actually care about him at this point so i cut him some slack on it and this definitely isn't what snake meant but he does have a family and that family is sunny.

sorry this took me almost three hours to answer the problem is that as previously stated this scene makes me deeply insane and i have so so so many thoughts on it and so in order to keep this answer even remotely coherent i had to take breaks to let the emotions calm down ghlsdkjfdhg

Hii just passing by to say that your art is very cute :3!! I especially liked those mini comics for Aro week, and the character shown 💚 I was wondering if you had a specific story behind for your OCs, or reference sheets? :D

sorry if this reply is a little late i dont check here very often asdfkg Thank you !!! i'm glad you like my art !! there is a storyline that my OCs share actually. currently, I divide them up into two different groups (this is gonna be long)

there's the detective trio, as seen here, and they live in early 1900's England. Starting from the bottom, there's Jack (the character you always see in the aro week comics), a private detective who inherited the agency from his now passed adoptive father. Jack wouldn't know what "aro" or "ace" means, but rest assured he is still very much both. Given enough time, he'd get to see the coining of these terms because he's actually a magical Fae being with a lifespan much much longer than that of a human. You might've noticed a few of the Aro Week comics dont seem to depict an era with Edwardian aesthetics, and that's because Jack gets to live through many decades without really changing much at all because of his magical nature. Jack is very sweet, being the perfect image of a gentleman... though he's very airheaded at times asdfgk He's the kind of Aro who loves deeply and just wants to be with his dear friends. Then there's Hinata. They're also a private detective, and they were childhood best friends with Jack. Hinata and their family had to move away when they were still young, so for a long while their only form of communication between them was sending letters. It's through Jack sending a letter asking Hinata for help in solving a particular case that the two finally get to meet again. Hinata's nonbinary, and while they also wouldn't know of that term in their initial time period, they also have an extended lifespan due to being of a magical nature like Jack (a fox shapeshifter, in Hinata's case). Hinata goes by he/him or she/her initially, but later on also use they/them when they learn it's an option. Hinata has a sense of humor that's hard to see through, almost convincing you of the most absurd things because they just love to mess with people like that. Their dry humor might obscure it, but they're genuinely someone who cares a lot about others. And finally, there's Bridgette. She's not a detective like the other two, but she's a newspaper journalist. In a time where women weren't allowed as much freedom in their life, Bridgette has to deal with a lot of unfair social expectations and restrictions, thus leading her to work extremely hard in her field of work to try to break free of them. She doesn't have the childhood connections to the other two in the trio, having met Jack initially, then later Hinata, both through work interactions, but she becomes a dear friend to the two of them. Also unlike the other two, she's actually a human, though it's possible that she may learn how to use magic later on. Bridgette is also possibly Aro, preferring her career over romantic endeavors, another area that she fights against society on. She is a very hard worker in not only her job, but in many aspects of her life.

There's other characters that you may of seen that also live in this time period, but I haven't thought them out much yet besides their initial concept and general vibes such as Fairy Prince (fairy is a different thing from a fae in this universe btw), Doll Girl, and Halloween Lady. I definitely want to develop them more Then there's the late century trio. U-04 (definitely need to consider a cooler name), Mike (left), and Tomoko (right). U-04 is a super hero robot, fourth in his line and designed to be the perfect image of a hero. On the surface, he's exactly as you'd expect, heroic, unfailing. But dig deeper under the mask and he's not what he presents himself to be. In fact, "robot" might not even be an accurate term in his case... U-04 also has a tendency to bad talk others inside his own mind, and the reason why he keeps up his act of being a hero is because he's dealing with his own insecurities, trying to run away from his previous life and his fear of being disliked. When he meets Mike for the first time, U-04 initially finds him extremely annoying but the truth is that Mike reminds him a lot more of himself than one would think... Mike is very energetic, and is practically a clown in the antics he gets up to. He doesn't have much direction in his life, but he's a good-hearted guy. The fact of the matter is, though he's a goofball, he plays it up to extremes in order to avoid being hurt. The years of being laughed at have taught him to laugh at himself first before anyone else can do it. He's a sad clown deep down, and this facade is what reminds U-04 of his own insecurities that he masks... It's also why U-04 starts to become protective and kinder towards Mike, seeing him like a younger brother. Tomoko is guitarist in a rock band, having pursued it after dropping out of college. She presents herself as a cool rock star type, but it's not hard to break through that image with the mild teasing she gets from her bandmates. Tomoko is actually a bit of an endearing geek deep down, enjoying things like cryptids and super hero stuff and genuinely getting deeply invested in both.... Thing is, she sees right through U-04's act. Tomoko knows that U-04's reasons for doing hero stuff isn't as righteous as he presents it to be and she hates him. Tomoko gets along with Mike fine though. Mike is the only person who can truly get her to the point of being extremely annoyed in the sort of way only an annoying little brother can asdfgk

I dont have many reference sheets done unfortunately, mostly because I just havent seen the need for them as i've either memorized the designs of my OCs in my head or am constantly experimenting with small aspects of their designs to the point where constantly updating the sheets would become tedious. There's a couple old ones for Jack, one in his usual attire and one for his alternative attire, but they're extremely outdated not only in art style but also some smaller details (he has a night sky pattern on his tie and on his cape for example).

maybe one day I'll actually do more modern reference sheets if i feel the need/desire to
