"C'mon Cas! I've told you a million times,"
"Dean" he tries to interrupt Dean's speech, to not avail.
"I really don't like the whole zapping thing and-" finally it seems to register where they are because Dean stops talking and lets out a, very manly if you asked him, screech instead, "what the fuck, Cas?!" He closes his eyes tightly, and Castiel sighs, reaching out to put a hand over Dean's knee, he marvells at the way the simple touch makes the tension in Dean's muscle start to slowly ebb away from them. It takes Castiel's breath away, even if he doesn't need to breathe, this intimacy and trust.
He still keeps his eyes closed, which makes Castiel shake his head fondly at him, "Dean, I won't ever let anything happen to you, you know that."
Dean takes a deep breath, then comes a muttered "yeah." He puts his own hand over the one Castiel has on his knee.
Dean opens his eyes and looks around, gasping loudly, Castiel looks down at the long line of dots formed by the distant car lights as people make their way back home for the day, the air is cold up here where they are sitting side by side looking down at the bridge from one of its colossal towers, so he takes off his trench coat and passes it to Dean who doesn't say anything but takes it with a light blush on his cheeks, probably due to the cold.
Dean puts the coat on, wrapping it close around himself and, when Castiel isn't looking, he presses his face to the lapel, breathing in deeply.
"I thought we both needed a break."
"Huh," Dean looks up at the night sky, "I usually go to some bar for a beer when I need a break, but this is so much better." He looks down once more, tensing slightly at the impressive distance between the road below them and their seat, "it all looks so tiny from here." The people and their vehicles, and even them compared to the structure they are on and the vastness of the sky above. Their troubles and worries.
"It does, humanity will never cease to amaze me, you keep coming up with such clever solutions to all your problems, your collective work has gotten you so far."
Dean hums along his agreement, still looking around them, Castiel doesn't think Dean, or many other humans nor angels for the matter, have seen what they are seeing now, so he lets him be, soak it all in, sharing a comfortable silence that wraps around then with a safety and warmth quite similar to the ones Castiel's coat is offering Dean right now.
Time flies by as they sit there, pressed together as they unconsciously move closer as the hours pass by, both of them pointing at things so the other can see them.
"There is a ship, right there, it's headed this way."
"Dude, Cas, not all of us have a grace powered laser focus vision, I can't see that shit from here."
Too soon for their liking it's time to go back, to their motel room in the other side of the country, to their research, to their end of the world.
"Thanks, Cas." Dean says, with a gentle tone, he reaches out and wraps his arm around Cas' shoulders pulling him closer in a one-armed hug that has the heart of Castiel's vessel doing strange somersaults inside his chest, "for everything, really, for the break and for, well," he stammers,"for being here."
Castiel nods once, slowly, solemnly, "I am glad you enjoyed it."
"Yeah, man, totally worth the week 'm gonna spend without going to the bathroom." Dean laughs.
Castiel rolls his eyes at him, and, feeling bold, instead of pressing two fingers to Dean's forehead, as usual, he turns to fully face Dean and cradles the side of his face.
In just a blink they are back at the motel room, Sam snoring lightly the other bed on the room, Dean and Cas sitting on Dean's bed, Cas' hand still cupping his cheek.

I think I'm scared to do a whole rewatch of Supernatural because I'll have to watch the first three seasons again.
Because one, it's a lot scarier than the last ones, with shit like people popping out of mirrors just makes me wanna hide under the cover but then you see an episode where someone is killed into their own bed, so there is nowhere you can be safe.
Two, I'm scared to feel emotions about early seasons Dean. I know I loved him starting from episode 3 of season 1, AT LEAST. This Dean feels so lonely that it hurts my own soul.
And three, now that I know how it ends for him, I just can't watch him tell how he knows his story will end. I just can't. It hurts too damn much.
That's why I usually starts in the middle and almost never watches the (2 or 3) last episodes, because the middle is safer. In the middle, Dean is not alone. In the middle, Dean is not dead (well not for long at least). In the middle, there is no beginning and no end. Sure they all suffer but there is still hope in the middle.

even as someone who does not ship the brothers (or deancas), i feel that there is no denying the heavy handed undertones of romance between them, and the writers' very intentional and frequent exploration into incestual themes, if one is truly understanding the show. however, it's also my understanding that a lot of hellers/deancas people/whomever use a frustrating argument that "sam doesn't really know dean" when in reality, he will always know dean better than cas. thats the whole point of the show. when dean and sam 'betray' each other from the other's persepctive, the person doing the betraying genuinely believes they are acting in the other's best interest, whereas with dean and cas it's always for personal benefit.
to stop the rambling, i wanted to ask, purely in interest of seeing multiple sides: if so many hellers were not so anti-sam and did not project so much onto castiel, do you think the fandom at large (outside of that group) would have less of an issue with the ship? again, i am genuinely curious and you seem both well established in the fandom and well versed in the show itself. i feel as though where other shows do have beef between shippers and such, the supernatural fandom is watching two completely different shows and so many of them are bypassing crucial parts.
Hey Anon!
I don’t ship Wincest either (though most Wincesties I know are cool), and I REALLY don’t ship Destiel. But, I do joke about brother husbands a lot and love the brothers’ codependency. Still, I don’t think the writers are actually ever suggesting there are true romantic feelings to Sam and Dean’s relationship. Or maybe I should say, I don’t think canon (or subtext) Sam and Dean are actually (even secretly) hot for their brother. However, I think the romantic parallels and even outright nods to incest are very deliberate (and obvious). Partly, it’s on brand for the horror/gothic genre of the early seasons, but it also serves the purpose of highlighting how important Sam and Dean are to each other. They are each other’s soulmate, life-partner, and number one, which are usually roles reserved for couples. Also, I think the show just likes to make jokes as well. It’s clearly deliberate when the show goes from having characters assume they are couples, to villains making incesty remarks about them, to Dean asking if Sam wants a divorce.
Tumblr media
I agree that Sam knows Dean better than Castiel, or anyone else. And Dean knows Sam best. That being said, they don’t understand each other perfectly, and they speak “different languages” in terms of showing care a lot of the time. Sometimes this is works in a complimentary way that has them in sync (Dean loves his family, especially Sam most, and Sam needs to be Dean’s number one), and sometimes it causes friction between the brothers (Dean letting Gadreel inside Sam or Sam trying to cure MOC). But, I agree that MOST of the time when they “betray” each other it’s when they are trying to help each other, or at least it’s a byproduct of something they feel they need to do. They never treat each other as expendable. And I also agree that betrayals between Dean and Castiel just hit different. I think this is because 1) they don’t have the same obsessive love underlying everything they do to/for each other (despite what hellers think), 2) they are more brothers-in-arms than true adopted famoly until later seasons 3) Castiel is not human, and I believe that Dean (however subconsciously) treats him differently because of that, and Cass not being human also changes his view of the fallout his actions will have with the people he cares about, and 4) I agree that they both betray each other out of personal interest in thst they value other things/people more highly than each other quite often (Dean will always value Sam above all, and Castiel often values whatever mission he is on above the brothers or is at least willing to risk them for it to an extent).
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Feel free to ramble in my asks whenever you like. Clearly, I do it too, so no judgement here.
My short answer to your question is … yes. If hellers didn’t hate on Sam in a transparent attempt to make him seem less important both to Dean and to the show in general, I doubt Sam girls would care that people shipped Castiel and Dean. It’s the attempt at twisting canon and down-playing Sam that is frustrating. And yes, the projecting added significance onto Castiel is massively annoying because it shows a lack of understanding of the show, whether purposeful or due to ignorance. And that annoys everyone who cares about the “fscts” of the show. It’s also their insistence that Dean is bi … because reasons (often offensive, stupid and/or steryotical) that annoys the people who actually enjoy Dean’s true chracter, not the fan-fic woobifued version of him that hellers (and some AAs) fawn over. But, I think what pisses the fandom at large off the most about hellers is their insistence that they get their way and the tantrums they throw about being “robbed” when a ship that was clearly never going to sail in the show continued not to happen. More specifically, their need to hate on actual actors, writers, producers, networks and other so called “homophobic” fans who don’t agree with them is abhorrent to many.
Tumblr media
I agree with your final sentiment completely. It is like Supernatural is at least two totally different shows, depending on which type of fan you are talking to. I mean, there are arguably more than two versions of the show in collective fans’ minds, if we consider which of the brothers a group sympathizes with most and how they interpret the chracters’ actions (Sam is a whiny brat … Dean is an abusive monster 🙄). But, out of all the fan groups, there is only one who seems to be "watching" a piece of media that does not even resemble the actual show … and it’s hellers.
Tumblr media
And to be clear, I’m not talking about Destiel shippers in general here, but hellers in particular. No one I know, including me, cares if people ship Dean and Castiel for their own enjoyment, but it’s the insistence they are right and attempted rewriting of canon (and threatening real people) that makes people ragey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, thank you for your ask. I’m sorry my reply was so long. (This is likely one of the reasons I don’t get a ton of asks, lol).

Fever: 14 Oct. Suptober
One of the victims had written in a diary about their shadow-self, but there was so far no evidence this was anything other than a metaphor, a way of reflecting on inward feelings unmirrored by outward actions.
Regardless, Cas was less concerned about the victim at the moment than he was the sheen in Dean's eyes.
deancas ust, almost-human Cas mid-case au (so, a some-season-in-the-middle au lol)
"So I googled an image of the flowers we kept seeing throughout the house," Dean said as soon as Cas came through the door, "and I think we were close but no cigar."
Cas couldn't imagine what tobacco had to do with the case. He edged over to the bed, intrigued more by the nature of Dean's voice than by anything he was actually saying.
And Dean was saying quite a lot. "They're in the daisy family, Asteraceae." He mostly pronounced that correctly. "But they're not daisy daisies, like, daisies." He gestured as if that would also mean something to Cas and kept going as Cas crept closer. "It's feverfew, um–" He flipped his notepad back a page shakily. "Tanacetum parthenium L." Another charming pronunciation that made Cas ache with fondness. "From febrifugia, Latin for "fever reducer,' so that's all on the nose." He wiped at his own nose with the back of his hand and patted around for a tissue.
Cas handed him one from the box beneath the lamp on the bedside table and sat down next to Dean on the mattress.
Dean continued, "Check this out. So I look up feverfew and witches, and there are a zillion hits, and I'm reading on this one site this whole mystical explanation of all the things feverfew is supposedly good for: migraines, arthritis, toothache; auras that might cause migraines, arthritis or toothaches. Keeps away mosquitoes; promotes good digestion. Quote–" He picked up his notepad again. "'Aids in the alchemical transformation of nervous energy, preventing the manifestation of shadow habits and emotions.'" He looked at Cas expectantly. "Sound familiar?"
He had no chance to mention this before Dean said, "The site with the info had these feverfew products for sale, including a tincture, and out of curiosity I clicked on it and it took me to the page for a farm that makes them from flowers they grow themselves, and then I was curious about the farm so I clicked a link for that." His voice had grown even rougher and more staticky, like his words were disappearing as soon as he tried to say them.
"Dean," Cas said, worry curling in his own throat.
"Guess what the farm's been doing," Dean rasped with a triumphant grin.
"What?" Cas asked indulgently.
Dean plopped his tablet in Cas's lap and scrolled to a photo of a green field fenced by rows of blooming bushes and scraggly apple trees. A paragraph had been highlighted: "'Since the early 1920s we have been committed to seeking and listening to and working in cooperation with the Angels, Elementals, and other natural spirits who have lived here on this land long before our arrival.'"
Cas took a sharp breath. He allowed himself to, as Sam might say, think outside the box for a moment. "I don't know any angels who've been on earth amongst humans, communicating with humans, for that long a period of time. Certainly not with the Host's permission; and none of us would've been able to escape detection–"
"Anna did," Dean pointed out.
"Anna fell." Cas put the tablet on the table, a frizzle of grief for his former friend making his head hurt for a second.
"It would make sense, though, if there were some…angelic interference to all this," Dean argued. "Considering the nature of the victims' injuries."
Cas had to concede Dean wasn't wrong. He also had to concede there was something else wrong with Dean instead. He pushed past his hesitations and gently laid his hand on Dean's forehead. The skin beneath his palm felt like fire.
"You're ill." He heard the sorrow in his own voice and tried to school it off his face but probably didn't succeed.
"Just a head cold," Dean said, just the barest outline of the words making much sound at all. "I took some Advil right before you got back and I'll be good as new in no time." His expression was full of generosity.
Cas, on the other hand, had shame and fear curdling in his stomach. Dean's health was generally fine but what if the head cold was actually a flu, or some other viral infection? With Cas's grace so utterly depleted, he could no more return Dean's body temperature to its normal level than he could decimate a horde of infectious agents swimming in Dean's bloodstream. And now there might be other angels involved in the case?
He felt as tired as Dean looked.
"Hey," Dean whispered. (Whispering seemed to work better.) "What did you find out, earlier?"
Cas had forgotten he'd been near the second crime scene, just a few towns over in Burr Oak. "Someone's checked out all the books on witchcraft from the public library, same as in Jamestown, Jewell, and Montrose, but there are no fresh graves at the cemetery."
Dean nodded. "Sam's supposed to be back with Garth in a couple of hours. Whatever they've found in Portis could be useful." He sagged back against a stack of pillows and closed his eyes.
Cas didn't know, anymore, what was best to do or not to do. He only knew what he wanted to do.
He'd noticed that Dean hadn't used to keep so many pillows on his bed. It seemed handy that there was another set on the bed now. He kicked his legs up onto the mattress and stretched out on his side, propped against the other set of pillows. Human comforts were beginning to be actually comfortable.
Or maybe it was the company. Dean's eyes fluttered open for a moment and fluttered shut again. Cas's eyes were heavy too. He almost opened them when Dean moved closer, tucking himself against Cas's chest, but it wasn't necessary to. He put his arms around Dean and pressed his face into Dean's warm hair, and fell asleep listening to Dean breathe.

Do you have any supernatural fic recs?
ANON. i have been waiting since 2019 for someone to ask me this. prepare to regret this decision (FYI: i'm taking all these recs & following notes from my public bookmarks on ao3, which you can find here. i'm cutting the notes short, so if u don't mind spoiler-y drawn-out comments, check that out too if u want!)
deancas focused:
A Reasonable Amount of Trouble by xylodemon -> an spn au where dean is a p.i. and a hunter on the side, cas is still an angel, and they get caught up in a plot that's a mix of seasons 4, 6, 8, and 9. this was my introduction to spn and deancas. the characterization is flawless and the prose is beautiful (very cs pacat-esque). the plot is crafted with close attention to detail and the pacing is perfect
the point of our being by noviembre -> a post-s15 fix-it that takes place immediately after the penultimate episode. noviembre is undoubtedly my favorite spn writer of all time. one of the best dean voices i've ever come across. this ties up the narrative threads into a beautiful, sound, satisfying ending, and both destiel & saileen survive. despite the odds, they're happy.
i projected onto dean winchester when i was twelve years old and now im making it your problem by alittleduck (amidsizedfrog) -> another post-finale fix it. and, to date, the funniest thing i've ever read. every fic in this series has a good balance between scenes that make u laugh so hard u hurt ur throat and Scenes That Make You Want To Gurgle Cement.
So Says The Sword by komodobits -> a s4 au and a fandom classic for a reason. if u haven't read this, i'm of the firm belief it's best to go in as blind as possible. but definitely keep this verse in the back of ur mind while reading: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father" (matthew 10:29)
sir this is a wendy's by noviembre -> yall remember when misha collins said that a modern au deancas would be like if a wendy's janitor and the president of the usa fell in love? well noviembre took that seriously and now we're here. and u should all be thankful bc it's somehow the single funniest and most romantic thing i've ever read
the pie isn’t a metaphor (it’s just pie) by noviembre -> post-finale s15 domestic deancas fic that's the emotional equivalent of drinking tea and lying under a warm weighted blanket. it makes me so happy and i think abt it every time i eat a pastry. i just sit there chewing like “dean and cas are eating fresh pie in their kitchen” and it puts a smile on my face.
Muscle Memory by komodobits -> a "50 first dates" au that i think abt every single day. i'm not joking. it's so sad and touching and sweet and unexpectedly funny, and no one writes deancas like komodobits. it just FEELS so them and i'm obsessed w it.
Strandlines by aeli_kindara -> au where s4 cas meets stanford-era dean. dean's voice and characterization is incredibly in-character with the early seasons and his voice doesn't falter once. and of course castiel! robotic s4 cas with this tremendous power and this fierce yet wavering loyalty to heaven that eventually focuses solely on dean! likewise, his character is spot-on and i enjoyed reading from his pov immensely.
[podfic] right hand on his rife, swore it on the bible by be_brave13 for quensty, floorsirens -> u can't possibly expect me NOT to include this. YES my friend and i wrote the fic but be_brave13's love and appreciation for it makes it feel like a completely separate work. my favorite podfic (and gift) of all time so i implore u to give it a listen.
something suddenly everywhere by noviembre -> the finest post-s15 fix-it of all time. cas is in the empty, they've defeated god, jack is gone, and all that's left is sam, eileen, dean, a bunker, and trying to move on. i know i already said that but this is the same author so it still counts! i cried, i laughed, i grieved, i jumped from excitement. it's a rollercoaster of emotions. it should be put behind a velvet rope at a museum so we can all gather around and clap.
To Boldly Go by 8daysuntiltheapocalypseiguess -> au where dean writes star trek fanfiction. it follows him from the beginning of the show to the older seasons and is told entirely thru his fic summaries, reader commentary, and livejournal dms. warning that it is unfinished, but it's a masterpiece
saileen focused:
Loveletter (Dear Eileen) by voynichs (Xenerik) -> a short and beautiful meditation about love and eileen from sam's pov. it's only 300 words but it feels like 15k. definitely at the top of my fave saileen fics of all time. when i first read it i stayed up until 2 am crying abt it
Livin' on a Prayer by Dredfulhapiness -> EILEEN MEETING EARLY SEASONS DEAN AND SAM I'M SCREAMING. do u understand how this could've changed the timeline but, more importantly, me as a person. eileen there when dean and sam were trying to find a way out of the deal, there when everything happened with ruby, there for dean's resurrection, there before they met cas, there after sam dies and dean retires and cas goes m.i.a. and DEALING with the aftermath of a foiled apocolypse. everyone hates the winchesters but the winchesters are gone and all that's left is eileen to deal with the brunt of it.
With Hands Clasped by Xenerik -> a handful of snippets from the eileen wedding that explores gender and religion and love so beautifully. i haven't been able to read it completely yet, but i can tell this is going to be another saileen fave.
other pairings/no pairings
The Love Story of the Runner Up by Margo_Kim -> told from the perspective of a guy cas had a brief affair with as a semi-drunken story he tells a friend in a bar. it's technically deancas but since cas's relationship with another man takes main focus, i elected to put it here.
Ten Years by Margo_Kim -> a bela talbot character study and the best i've been able to find, no contest. *rowena voice* good girls are pathetic here's to evil skanks <3
The Archangel Gabriel Is Dead by seizethefire -> fics that have half a million kudos in my mind. it's about how and why rafael comes to think that god is dead. it expertly explores the familial relationship between gabriel, lucifer, michael, and rafael. it's devastating and beautiful in equal measure. definitely a personal favorite and one i think everyone should read
put them in a box somewhere by amidsizedfrog -> a mary & dean fic told from mary's pov from before she died. a gut-wrenching story about performative/toxic masculinity and internalized homophobia and mothers.
lastly, if ur interested, i also write spn fic >:) which u can find by clicking here. happy reading!

oh lol, I finished watching HB like last week, but i haven't dipped into fandom yet so i didn't realize this comparison was something being done elsewhere as well! Mostly im rewatching the episodes. Honestly to me, the comparison is a bit superficial and has more in common with earlier/mid-season canon trope buckets and how the characters are written in AU fics, rather than how they are like in later seasons of SPN. (the DeanCas dynamic shifted a lot over 12 yrs imo!)
Most superficial thing - the Stolas-Cas owl /headtilt connection. 🦉😂 But Stolas is also a deeply lonely but repressed and dutiful member of a provileged higher class / 'better' group of beings, where he never quite fit in despite being well-placed. It was a meeting with Blitz that put his entire life into a different trajectory, where he finally started to feel things and question his previous life, and ended up forsaking that old perfect life for associating with a guy from a 'lower' class of beings, that he faces derision from his peers for. He is naive to the ways of the world, but willing to learn, even as he is often quite unintentionally derogatory about imps. (this often happened with early Cas) He also has a strong love for his child and a strong connection to the identity of being a father, even though that journey is rocky. He seems to have grown up alone and yet part of a innumerable nameless horde of siblings with a largely absent father, and it is later revealed that the fascination of Blitz and his doubts and unhappiness actually predates the supposedly "first" meeting when they started associating.
The relationship in the beginning is transactional (though in very different ways for both ships), but slowly and surely evolves beyond that. Stolas, despite being much for powerful in supernatural ways, Blitz's is often the one taking the lead and Stolas let's him. Even as Blitz secretely actually thinks Stolas is completely out-of-his-league and is just putting up with him, because he's the toxic guy who everyone leaves if they have a choice and only puts up with if they have to. Then there's the growing up in a nomadic lifestyle with a not-so-great dad, and dead mom in a fire! Right now you could consider the Barbie Wire and Blitz relationship in the Stanford-era!Sam and Dean zone, but clearly Blitz has very strong feelings about his sibling with whom he was close growing up.
lol I was in the tags 5 minutes after the last episode, looking for fanart to reblog. If you want to dip your toes in, I recommend blocking some tags, because the fandom and ship tags are full of antis who need to go watch a different show because they really hate this one and I don't understand why they're still here? Go touch grass, folks. But at least they're pretty good at tagging their hate. I've blocked "anti stolitz", "stolitz critical", "anti vivziepop", and "vivziepop critical" and that seems to have caught most of it.
Thanks for coming back with an explanation! That's way better than the posts I'd seen about it, and I think you're right about the parallels. I think my mental block on it comes from the fact that I ship them for different reasons.
Dean and Cas are reluctant allies at first who become close friends, and there are things keeping them from moving past that. They're always dealing with world ending events that take priority over their own personal drama, and they both fundamentally misunderstand each other's love languages and think things are one sided. I ship them in a star crossed lovers kinda way.
Blitz and Stolas are interesting to me specifically because it started out as a fucked up bargain where Stolas was using Blitz for kinky sex, and Blitz was Not Into It. The power imbalance and dubcon was HOT. And when I found out that Stolas was married too, I was like aw yeah, this guy's a bag of dicks, and he's shoving them into all of Blitz' holes.
Delicious toxicity mmmm.... And then...AND THEN...it's slowly revealed that they both want something more, and Stolas only made the deal because he thought that was the only way he could get Blitz to come back. And it didn't even occur to Blitz that Stolas could feel anything for him because of their class differences.
In the episode that ends with Blitz going "he can get hurt?" with shock and confusion, omg I about fell off the couch. Because on the surface he's talking about physical injuries, but in subtext he's talking about Stolas getting his feelings hurt too. *chef's kiss* ugh it's so fucking good.
Come to think of it, you could make that another Destiel parallel, since Dean doesn't think Cas is capable of feeling romantic love. Now that you've given me a few points of entry, I'm going to start connecting dots all over the place lol

Interesting news out of the M&G Saturday, but I gotta say, it doesn't track with filming, original intent, or anything else and does seem like either if taken at flat value rather than reading thoroughly.
A) Misha is throwing something/lying/word tweak people missed
B) It's that whole extended direct reunion element even if Dean deals with his own bullshit
Particularly interesting since he DID make it to film. The TLDR is that people are implying he said he won't be in TW, that he and Jensen talked about it and "Jensen and I spoke in depth and we decided it wasn't time for Cas to come back". That it was intended with Jensen and they talked about it.
This, of course, if read DIRECT, is directly in contrast with Jensen outright saying "I'm bringing Castiel back" in another recent greet (iirc it was DC. Misha also told a fan he was coming back this year as well, a few weeks later). So it feels like there's either some miscommunication, or they changed some delivery angles when the script flexed for renewal, or misha is outright admitting they opted to bump Cas coming back into the next year plot rather than the tie-up finale.
The only way I can think OF this working in the structure, though, if it becomes Dean saying and facing his piece whether or not he's heard back (which is the point of finding the self, just like Cas didn't need to Hear It Back to find himself), and then stretching out the full recovery to the second season, which I believe is something I threw as an option on it, the great destiel reunion method. If people end S1 knowing Cas might still be out there and come back for S2 on the great destiel chase.
Which I believe I said was the antis' best hope--a direct stall on any reunion direct only to turn into the great lovers divided across worlds storyline. So you know. Enjoy that.
Like I said I've been flying blind on extension plans. Season 1's premise was simple: Dean, dead, finding peace, and putting away his inner monsters and addressing his repressed issues and had something to say and needed Cas. Learning from your parents etc. I SAW this as a potential flex but I can't say I'm comfortable believing it outright plain text. What does he mean Coming Back. Is that the same as Being In? Coming Back and Being In Are similar but not the same. He could be In the show without Coming Back in a means that is like, literally coming back. Because if Castiel Comes Back Now, then we end up with the deancas show for season 2 and the kids as a side, but that doesn't mean he has no presence there EG Roxy and so on. So I can see how it could be "Cas is in but not coming back yet, such as voices, small clips, astral breakthroughs, etc"
I know some people are gonna try to spin and twist and flip out and manipulate the fuck out of this and make it a damn big thing, but I really don't care. End of the road will always be the same. Catastrophize and squeal all you want after the post, but I'd rather inform people of the dialogue going around than brush it under a rug.
I always struggled, personally, with where the show could go if DeanCas got a reunion, since ironically the search for that is a huge point of the early premise. They wrote it for one season but if you get more seasons, the whole akrida-stiel setup kinda gets wonky to continue if he just ends up sitting shotgun with Dean. So frankly, I'm not even blinking at this statement.

I have been enjoying your live blogs immensely even though i myself don't have enough context for late late seasons. Since you've been going through it recently, I am curious to know how you view early s13 episodes that get called "widower arc" by d/c shippers. They really bring it as the proof that Dean CANNOT live without Cas, while he can move on from Sam but now that I'm reaching there, I'm a bit confused 'cause Dean lost more than just Cas at end of s12? I would love to know your thoughts on this part of the show because I still get a bit of anxiety about watching any further...
hello beloved anon omg i'm so pleased someone is getting something out of my liveblogging <3 haha. sorry it took me a little while to get to this - it feels like actually forever since i watched 12/13 and i'll admit right now that i was not watching them with my full focus. so take that into consideration haha
but okay i would not worry about watching further. the show does not suddenly become a destiel fest in late late seasons - if anything i feel like it's this strange combination of "ah shit we should do something with castiel" and "we can't actually think of anything to do with castiel" so he's THERE, but like, irregularly. and while NOW, in 15 (maybe also late 14? they blur) there is starting to be some "ok they're setting up for cass to have confirmed romantic feelings for dean" it's very much... uh... in the background. genuinely doing my best to be objective and use neither my wincestie goggles OR my destiel-hater goggles but silly domestic brothers are definitely still at the forefront and i assume that will remain the same up to the finale.
as for a widower arc... um, well, again my memories of early s13 are not super crystal clear. i actually had to go back and rewatch a little to remind myself what was going on because i forgot cass even died then lol. you know where my focus is. but like you said anon dean lost so much at the end of 12 and like, in general that whole season was kind of a headwreck. i think he was already in a bad place and then lost yet another person that had been in his life long-term. we KNOW dean doesn't do well losing anything that's been in his life for a while which makes complete sense given, you know, his life. lol. he's cut up about cass because he has lost yet another friend. nothing about it suggests "widower" to me - ESPECIALLY not compared to how he "coped" whenever he lost sam. again, trying my best to be objective but i don't see it, lol. i think it's a fanon interpretation that suits the ship, which is fine if you're into it but if you're not - like, i wouldn't be watching it going "god damn, i wasn't a destiel believer before, but dean is clearly grieving him like a widower! the scales have fallen from my eyes! deancas forever" lmao
also, like, when they ARE reunited the response is kind of tragically one-sided dkfjgh. dean is happy to have him back clearly but their relationship settles down again very fast and dean goes back to like. uh. what i personally can't read as anything other than viewing cass as one or two shades more important than like, the family dog. SORRY i know that's harsh and they are friends. but their interactions are so sparse and dean is so unbothered lately lmao which you cannot convince me is down to repression. he just has other priorities!!!! (sammy)
okay i hope this wasn't too incoherent. don't worry about watching further!! there are tangents like there have been for the last like, 10 seasons but all in all. it's brothers front and centre forever. and there are enough sweet moments imo to keep you going even when the show is not so good (been saying this to myself since like, s7. if i can do it anyone can do it). just think of the 14x12 hug. all things are possible through the power of the 14x12 hug

free to be you and me was Thee moment. pivotal and essential and a groundbreaking MOMENT cause it was so early in castiels time and it was the season after his introduction and they had the room to lean into and discover more of what his new plots and thoughts and feelings and being were going to be like and his first scene in the third episode is the deancas moment with arguably the most sexual tension in the room with them?? personal space my ass what is going on?? it is a living breathing thing and the writers planted it at that moment. what were they expecting us to think and do moving forward.

Do you reckon had Kripke been show runner for longer he would have made destiel cannon earlier and also I feel like if anything destiel would have become cannon in s8 had they made it earlier (regardless of Kripke had made it cannon or not, as maybe he would have done it later in the series?)
oh nonny this is such a good question and while i have thought about it a lot i'm not quite sure i'm 100% here but we shall see what we get shall we
i'm going to break this down into two sections bc i feel like you asked two separate but related questions
so the first question is - would destiel have become canon earlier if kripke had remained show runner for longer - honestly i think no. i think kripke would have been open to it, just based on what i know of the early planning history of spn as well as dean and his character. but given the time period of when he was showrunner + 5 years after that i can't really see it. i think it's easy to forget that we went through 3 showrunners before gay marriage even became legal in the US (country wide that is) and while shows were certainly pushing the envelope back in the early 2010s i don't think even kripke could have pushed for dean and cas to be canon back then, even if he wanted to
but as i said, i don't necessarily think that because kripke wouldn't have been OPEN to deancas being canon. i certainly don't think it was his intention, but i do think that once he knew about the interest, the idea would have intrigued him.... and that's as far as i've thought here, i could go on but it just gets more and more speculative so eh
the second part of the question (as far as i understood) was more of a theory by anon stating that if tptb had been open to destiel it could have gone canon in s8, regardless of if kripke had remained showrunner past s5
i will say that i think jeremy carver was a huge destiel fan and tried hard to make it canon. we don't call it season gr8 for nothing. i will also say that i think sera gamble was a destiel fan in her own right - as much as someone can be a destiel fan while being as homophobic as possible ;alsdjflkas
personally i do think s8 was a test case of jeremy carver and creative directors to make destiel canon and then tptb shut it down and that's why there was barely anything in s9 or s10. so yes, i think if tptb had been more open to dean and cas it may have gone canon in s8 regardless of kripke's involvement. but as i mentioned earlier, we didn't have gay marriage until 2015 and s8 aired between 2012 - 2013. the same societal pressures that i think would have impacted kripke if he had stayed on as showrunner longer would still be in effect here even if tptb were more friendly
i think the more effective question here is actually would destiel have been canon in s13 had tr*mp not gained the US presidency in 2016
that, i think, was the most significant cultural event that potentially impacted destiel becoming canon. i am too tired to go into all the horrors of the tr*mp presidency but needless to say it was very anti-queer. as crazy as it sounds, i do believe that if clinton had won in 2016 we may have gotten destiel earlier
this all to say - personally i'm not mad that we didn't get canon destiel until s15. as one of my friends mentions constantly, if destiel had become canon earlier it would have been subjected to the standard "relationship drama" that shows utilize and honestly i think that would have been a disservice to dean and cas (tho tbf it is a disservice to all relationships that are subject to it).
i'm happy with not getting canon destiel until s15 bc tbh i'm not sure the show could have handled it effectively and i still question their ability if i'm being honest
i'm a big fan of having an ending where fandom creators can take what we have and build in any direction and that's what we have here, as much as i hate the finale.
anyway this was long but hopefully you were able to bare with me aha

hi!! i started reading this deancas fic a couple of days ago and then i closed the tab because i’m a dumb fuck. i can’t find it anywhere, so i was wondering if you could help me out? it was set in the early seasons i think, with cas and dean as more or less fuckbuddies (the phrase used to describe their relationship is “whatever they have”). they’re getting down to action and it’s mentioned how dean doesn’t like cas using his mojo to undress him because it gives him flashbacks to hell. then dean asks cas to show him his wings, and they’re invisible but when dean touches them they feel like a force field. sorry this is all so vague but i REALLY want this fic back lmao, thank you sm for any help!!
oh man i haven’t read fic in a solid year now and my memory for what i did read is nonexistent so i’m no help. sorry!!

In light of the, y’know . . . market research, I’m wondering if the uptick in explicitly queer side characters in later seasons wasn’t a way for the show to try to demonstrate they could make Dean/Cas canon without losing their audience

Suptober 6 Oct.: Parody
"I'm Dean, by the way."
"Castiel." He shook Dean's hand just right, an apology still written all over his handsome face. "Again, I'm very sorry for the tree's…attack." He let go of Dean's hand. "I suppose I couldn't offer you an extremely deep discount on a lightly used pine?"
deancas, Hallmark movie au...sorta, nsfw-ish
Dean didn't remember Lawrence being cold as balls this early in December. He shifted back and forth on his feet quickly and rubbed his hands together, trying to stave off hypothermia. Even the scent of the just-cut trees was arctic, but also an invigorating, spicy green.
The smell tapped his noggin like he was a chilled keg of beer. He remembered the orange-tipped electric candles in the living room window and the fresh fir tree in the corner strung with multicolored lights and silver tinsel the consistency of Easter basket grass. His new ornament that year was a teddy bear wearing a Santa hat. The one he'd helped pick out for Sam – who wasn't even born yet, still just a lump in Mom's tummy – was a lamb holding a candy cane.
A gold angel sat at the apex of the tree, wings delicate gossamer, catching all the colors of the lights. He'd been transfixed, when Mom first turned on the tree for the season.
Dean stomped his frozen feet twice to make himself stop thinking about it.
"May I help you find the perfect tree, good sir?" a thin, dapper man with a decidedly non-Kansasian accent asked him. "We have the best selection in town year after year here at Heavenly Pines." His tag said his name was Balthazar.
Well, takes all kinds.
"No, I'm just looking, thanks." Dean tried to side-step him and didn't get far.
"For anything in particular?" Balthazar asked, far too politely.
Dean sighed. "To be honest–"
"Oh, indeed, please do."
"Do you sell any smaller trees?" He glanced around at the nearby stands of Douglas firs and Norway spruces, all at least six or seven or more feet tall.
Balthazar's enthusiasm flagged. Smaller tree, smaller price tag. "Let me find my brother to help you. We do have a selection for those customers with, shall we say, specialist needs." He waved a hand while doing a spin. "Ah," he said, pointing toward the greenhouse, "he's just over there. Blue vest, can't miss him."
Upon approach, Dean took a moment to admire the view he was walking towards. Where Balthazar might have been described as spindly, the brother would qualify as sturdy. Very sturdy. Dean paused. Was he checking out strangers' shapely…forms at Christmas tree stands now? Was this happening?
What harm, he told himself. Who cares. Just 'cause this wasn't a woman? If ol Balthy back there'd had a sister, Dean'd have looked at her too. He had eyes that worked, didn't he?
Okay. No worries.
The brother turned as he spoke with another customer briefly, and Dean found himself stalled again to admire the man's lovely profile, so much so that he was caught unaware when a large white pine tree suddenly fell on him as if asked by God personally to tackle Dean to the ground.
"Oh my goodness," someone said. Dean had a terrible feeling that deep, surprised voice was that of the brother. Sure enough, when Dean rolled out from underneath the tree's soft if plentiful limbs, it was the brother offering him a hand up. A big, strong hand. "Are you hurt?"
The brother's eyes were so startlingly blue, and so filled with worry, it took Dean a moment to speak at all. "No, it's fine, I'm fine." He brushed a plethora of pine needles and a bit of aisle mulch off of himself. "Despite the ambush."
"Gabriel, what the hell?" the brother called across the stand. "These trees in section B aren't properly secured at all."
"Yeah, yeah, on it," someone, presumably Gabriel, said from somewhere unseen.
"We are so sorry, sir. Are you sure the tree didn't cause any damage?" the brother asked Dean.
Dean got the impression this guy would've been patting Dean down to check for injuries if that was the sort of thing that strangers were allowed to do when their wares had tried to mug a guy. "Truly, I'm not even bruised."
The man reached out a hand towards Dean's face and then pulled back. "You have a small scratch on your cheekbone."
Dean touched it with his fingertips gingerly. Didn't feel too bloody. "I'll try to recover from this trauma the best I can." He smiled, wanting the man to smile back. Decided to stick out his hand.
"You could," Dean said, lighting up at the humor in Castiel's voice. "But I'm actually shopping for a tabletop tree. Bal said I should see you about smaller trees?"
Castiel tipped his head as if puzzled. "Bal? Oh, my other brother. Yes, we have a selection of those in the greenhouse. This way."
Dean followed, feeling downright cheerful. Cool your jets, Romeo, he told himself, which did not work. Under the greenhouse's twinkling lights Castiel looked better and better. Dean wanted to put his arms around his waist and line up his whole body against the strength of him. It was perhaps not the most helpful or even well-timed desire he'd ever had, but he'd almost died, for pity's sake.
All right, probably not. He was still going to take advantage of ogling Castiel's gorgeous hands and forearms as he hoisted a potted tree up onto a table at the door. "This is a dwarf Alberta spruce," Castiel said. "After the holidays, if you want to plant it outdoors, it'll eventually grow to be ten to thirteen feet tall. Emphasis on eventually; it'll take years."
Dean touched a small limb. The tree was a healthy shade of green and, importantly, wouldn't take up too much space this year in his tiny rental. "It's perfect."
"Then it's yours," Castiel said. "Least I can do."
"No, no," Dean said, "you don't have to–"
"Dean." Castiel's voice denied an argument, and jesus if that didn't make every nerve ending in Dean's dick jump to attention. "Enjoy your tree."
"Thanks, Cas." Dean was finding it difficult to look away, and finding it invigorating that Cas seemed to be having the same trouble. A long, long moment later, Dean said, "You guys been selling here a while, huh?"
"Third generation." Cas tipped his head again. "You're not from here?"
"I was. I mean, I am. I guess." Dean wrung his cold hands that were going numb. "Just moved back after about thirty years elsewhere. Town's not as different as I expected it to be. Lots colder."
Cas smiled a bit more shyly. "This is the hardest cold snap in December we've had in several years. They're saying it will be a much snowier winter than usual."
Dean nodded. "I gotta step up my game, wardrobe wise." Stop gazing, stop gazing. "Working with family fun?"
"No," Cas sighed. "But it's better now that our father is… Out of the picture." He looked down like he realized that wasn't an admission for small talk and shook his head. "You don't work with your family, I take it?"
"I did, for several years. My dad, um." Dean swallowed. "He passed couple years ago." Not long enough ago Dean didn't still feel guilty as shit for being relieved about it. "Been making my way here ever since, I guess. My brother's thinking of moving back too, if he can figure out the logistics with his law firm." Why are you telling him any of this, dummy? But Cas's eyes were kind as he listened. "Well, hey. You got other customers to attend to. Thanks very much for the tree."
"Of course, Dean." Cas made a gesture like he was going to say something else, but didn't.
Before regret – or common sense – could set in, Dean said, "You like pecan pie?"
Cas blinked. "Yes?"
Three hours and thirty-four minutes after that conversation, Dean opened his back door. Cas stood on the stoop holding out a red velvet bow.
Dean grinned as he took it from him. "It'll bring out my eyes."
Cas smiled crookedly. "It would, but it is for the tree. I forgot to tie it on before you left." At Dean's questioning expression, he said, "It's our signature thing at Heavenly."
"Ah. Come on in." Dean put the bow on the kitchen table. "Offer you a drink?"
"Whatever you're having," Cas said, coming over to stand beside him by the counter.
Dean handed him a beer from the fridge. Cas's fingers slid over his as he took the can from Dean and put it on the counter.
"There's homemade pie?" Cas asked quietly, looking up through his dark lashes as he and Dean leaned into each other.
Even bluer up close, Dean thought, ducking his head to kiss Cas, a soft, experimental touch of mouth to mouth. He had a question to answer but was almost positive the next kisses, more urgent as he pressed Cas against the counter, spoke for him.
It was minutes before they untangled for a proper breath, and Cas said, sounding wonderfully hopeful, "You have protection on hand?"
"Whole new box," Dean whispered, diving back for another kiss.
He hadn't actually made any decisions about taking things slow with a guy he'd known for four hours, and therefore didn't have to berate himself for telling the truth. Ten minutes later, in his bedroom, on his knees, Dean felt a number of delicious emotions, including plain old awe. He did manage to mutter, "There's a tree trunk joke in here somewhere," before swallowing down Cas's astonishing cock.
Cas's soft gasp of pleasure was the sweetest sound Dean had heard in forever. Cas curled his hand in Dean's hair and yanked–
"Dean," Cas said, "it's just me."
Dean opened his eyes at about the same time Cas caught his hand mid-slap, Cas's face looming over him with a half-amused expression. Dean felt the bunker mattress under his back and that heavy blurriness that came from being startled out of REM sleep.
Cas lowered his eyebrows as Dean noticeably woke up. "Sorry. Good dream?"
Dean rubbed his eye with his knuckle. "Hmm."
Cas gently pulled his hands down to kiss him before curling up on the bed next to him.
Dean took stock of the rest of his body as he curled into Cas and decided he was probably too sleepy to do anything about the quickly dissipating, murky arousal leftover from the dream. He also decided he was never watching another Hallmark movie again for any reason.
"We should buy a real Christmas tree this year," Dean murmured as he placed a kiss atop Cas's warm head.
Cas tucked his hand under Dean's shirt. "It's October 6th." He sounded confused.
"I know," Dean said. He yawned. "Just putting a pin in it for the holidays this year."
"All right," Cas said. He looked up as Dean started to sit up. "You're not going back to sleep?"
Dean had just remembered the last part of the dream with tremendous clarity. He smiled down at Cas like a shark.
