another scammer pretending to be a palestinian fleeing gaza has popped up: url is gazapalestinedrianjaphah . the only link they include for accepting funds is a linktree with only a paypal link that ive seen linked to other, different scam accounts (iirc ive seen the paypal account linked on posts from various cystic fibrosis/diabetes insulin scam blogs over the past several months.)

Gentle reminder that people soliciting in your ask box for money very well could be a scam and I recommend that each and every one of you actually MAKE SURE that the account is trustworthy before reblogging it or donating. These people put a lot of effort into trying to look real, and leech off of the good faith of the people on Tumblr in order to receive "donations."

For example, check to see how recently the account was made. This can be done by checking the dates of all their posts/reblogs. If it looks like the account was made extremely recently, and/or if all of their posts/reblogs were made in the same day, then it's probably a scam.

Most of these accounts are described as single minority parents who need insulin (Ex: "I'm a single Native American mother of two who can't afford my insulin...") and typically have a goal of a couple hundred dollars. They also always have a banner of what's SUPPOSED to look like a picture of them with their children. These accounts all follow a format, and again, it's all meant to make the account look real as possible so people don't get suspicious.

I beg of you guys, PLEASE get suspicious. PLEASE investigate these accounts and VERIFY that they're actually who they say they are, and not just TRYING to look real. There are specific signs and you guys NEED to look out for them, because these people rely on your blind trust and good intentions to share these posts around and donate to them. This is the internet, and there are truly some nasty lying bastards out there who will masquerade as ANYONE to get a quick buck.

I just really felt the need to make this post because I myself used to reblog these posts, but then I was made aware of the signs of a scam and now my heart sinks a little whenever I see someone innocently reblogging these posts thinking they're real. There's nothing wrong with wanting to believe these people, but PLEASE look for the signs so you don't get tricked. Please.

I'm gonna rant about something that sucks because its late and I can't stop stressing about it.

I have type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed at 9 years old. There is currently a nationwide shortage of insulin. I have been dealing with this personally for a few months now.

This is a shortened list of the bullshit I have been dealing with. Keep in mind every time I say there was a phone call, I had to call minimum 3 times and talk to 3 different people for anyone to figure out their shit.

A few months ago i had to FIGHT with my pharmacy because I had a script available until August for insulin and they insisted I didn't. I asked my doctor to send over a new script because they just couldn't fucking find it and a few days later that was through. I can get my insulin now right???

Then there was an issue with insurance. I'm on government insurance. My doctor prescribed ✨️name brand✨️ insulin and insurance said NO and completely denied my prescription. Call insurance and they say "you need to take the generic (Insulin Aspart) for a trial period until its proven it doesn't work" so days later (again) I finally have a script to fill. I can get my insulin now....RIGHT???

Its been over a week at this point. I was trying to get ahead of the game but my supplies is dwindling and i desperately need to pick up my insulin. Pharmacy says they are on backorder and won't have insulin for at least a week OR drive an hour to a completely different town. So i drove an hour and I finally got my insulin.

Next month, I call a few days in advance. Insulin is still on back order and won't be available for 2 weeks OR I can drive an hour to another different town and pick up half a months worth because that's all anyone in my whole fucking state even has???? So I drive an hour (AGAIN) and set a reminder in my phone to call over a week in advance to see if insulin is still on backorder.

Surprise! Now we are to this month and I called WELL OVER A WEEK IN ADVANCE. Insulin is still on back order and won't be available until END OF MAY. So I set up an amazon account and ask them to transfer the script. My doctor calls me a couple of days later to make sure I'm not getting scammed and want my script sent to a different pharmacy. I confirm and say I haven't been able to access my insulin from my current pharmacy. Please send the script.

Amazon lets me know a couple days ago they weren't able to contact either my provider or my pharmacy and I should try having my doctor just send a new prescription. So i call my doctor and I leave a voicemail with the nurse (because not even ONCE has she EVER picked up the fucking phone and she's a bitch and doesn't do her job and I hate her) and nothing happens. I call after hours today and am surprised to learn there is a doctor on call after hours for emergencies. The person I spoke to was very nice and said she'd mark it urgent for me and to keep my phone on me because I might get a call back from the on call doctor. I did not recieve a call back and as far as amazon is concerned I still don't have a script.

I'm okay right now. I still have two vials of insulin on hand (which lasts me about 10ish days) and I'm gonna call my doctor again tomorrow and keep fighting until someone does what I need.

But on top of all of this, not knowing if I'm gonna get another month of supplies every fucking time, I have looked at my backup options and I literally do not have any.

Eli Lilly does not allow you to sign up for their affordable insulin program if you are on government insurance.

My doctor does not have "sample vials" because of the shortage (and it would last me 6 days MAXIMUM)

And there is a specific law called "Kevin's Law" after a guy who died unable to contact his provider for a refill that allows pharmacies to do an emergency 72 hour worth fill in the case that a doctor cannot be contacted. Here's the kicker. It's active in my state! But it doesn't apply to vialed insulin because the amounts in them are predetermined and they can't take out the appropriate doseage and GOD FORBID they give you a little more insulin than you actually need.

Closest thing we've found is an RX coupon that makes a single vial of insulin, five days worth of living, $100. It is an absolutely worse case scenario.

I'm so sick and tired of all of this. My diabetes anniversary was in April. 20 years. I did not celebrate it. I don't feel like there is anything to celebrate right now.

EDIT: Nurse finally got back to me today after a 3rd call to claim she had already sent the script on the 25th and was gonna call amazon to see what was happening. Not even a MINUTE later I get a text that amazon has it now. If you don't remember from above, I fucking hate this nurse and I guarentee she lies to my face constantly. Anyway, amazon is also out of stock, so I get to call back tomorrow and have it sent to my old pharmacy again just to see if I can make a 1-2 hour trip out of town just to get 1 or 2 vials. Wish me luck 🙃

I would like everyone seeing this post to go check out @kyra45. Their informative posts are mostly where I'm getting the following points from, and their red flags list is what I'm using to come to the conclusion that this ask is a scam.

Why do I say that?

This was a cold call. This blog does not follow me but messaged me, someone they don't know, with an ask requesting a large amount of money. It's even more suspicious than when someone is only following you for a few hours before they send something like this.

Their blog appears to be only a few days old. The oldest posts date back to November 28, 2023. That was five days ago.

Their reblogged posts, while there are many, focus mainly on trending topics such as the genocide in Palestine. While these issues need attention, the fact that the majority of their posts on an extremely new blog are reblogs of a trending topic is another red flag.

They requested that I act fast and guilt-tripped me with "I'm on my last pen and it's pretty close to empty." This may encourage someone to act rashly and donate without doing proper research.

You really said... that $370.... isn't a lot of money. Dude, I've had a large amount of pay checks that didn't even total $370. $370 is a huge amount.

Again, guilt-tripping with the "this can save my life." You can't just put that massive responsibility on a stranger. That's compelling people to donate because we don't want to be the reason you die, and taking advantage of that is, scam or not, a crappy thing to do and has created a massive issue in society.

The "blessings, please help, thanks" thing is just something I've seen in a lot of scam asks, so that automatically sets off alarm bells. It's suspicious because it's become so common in scam asks.

Do not donate to this person, evidence suggests they are a scammer.

"I'm not asking for a windfall"..."just a little help, please" is a phrase that's been used over and over in insulin scams.

If you're wondering what the Arabic says, it cannot possibly be accurate because I know for sure whoever is running these scams is using a translate program to do that. I know this because once when I caught a version of a post that had the Arabic, I tried running it through a translator and it ended up being a garbled version of someone's gofundme as if the scammer had copy/pasted the gofundme into the translator and posted it that way.

Sounds a little lukewarm, but at any rate, I know for certain the people running the scams are using an online translator for this because I remember that one website everyone used to play on back in the day that would more or less play "google translate telephone" by sending your message through up to ten languages before returning it in english... and a lot of me being curious and running the scammers' Arabic through gives me a lot of "this has been google translated too many times and lost the original meaning" vibes.

They're using stock images this time, and I suspect it's because stealing images from gofundmes has been giving reverse search results leading directly to said gofundmes.

Along with everything, My grandma has diabetes and osteoporosis, so she can’t walk.
