Al-Shifa Hospital director arrested by Israeli forces
Nov 23rd, 06:56 GMT
The director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City has been arrested by Israeli forces along with several other medical personnel.
“Doctor Mohammad Abu Salmiya was arrested along with several other senior doctors,” Khalid Abu Samra, a chief of department at the hospital, told the AFP news agency.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority has also confirmed the arrest.
Israeli forces alleged that Gaza’s biggest hospital was used as a command centre by Hamas before it was occupied, without providing evidence.
Brutal scenes unfolded at the hospital this month, with Israeli forces besieging and raiding the medical complex. Snipers spent days shooting at anyone trying to move from one medical building to the other, prompting international outcries.
Al-Shifa is seen as a nerve centre for the Gaza government’s administrative bodies. Health Ministry officials have held news conferences surrounded by bodies, and the government’s Media Ministry has operated out of the hospital.
Israel orders Indonesian Hospital evacuation in 4 hours: Health Ministry
Nov 23rd, 07:02 GMT
Munir al-Bursh, the director-general of Gaza’s Health Ministry who is inside the Indonesian Hospital, says the Israeli army has warned people in the facility to evacuate it in four hours.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, he said the bombing continues around the hospital in northern Gaza from all sides.
More from inside Indonesian Hospital
Nov 23rd, 07:10 GMT
The director-general of Gaza’s Health Ministry has told Al Jazeera there are 65 dead bodies inside the besieged medical facility that they cannot bury.
Munir al-Bursh said there are about 200 patients left at the Indonesian Hospital after some 450 patients were evacuated yesterday.
Each ambulance is carrying up to seven people at a time, he added.
As we reported earlier, the Israeli army has ordered the evacuation of the hospital within four hours.

26 April 2024
Environmental engineer and public health consultant Dr. Tamer Al-Najjar reports that despite the occupation’s attempt to destroy it, the Indonesian Hospital will be back to operation within the next few weeks. Work is also already underway to return Al-Shifa Hospital to operation, which we have seen from the social media accounts of staff members.
There is never a time to lose hope, but especially not now. Gaza lives, and Palestine WILL be free in our lifetimes.

Maybe it's because I work in healthcare and I remember vividly during the worst of covid when all medical facilities were under strain, when there were no more beds, no more oxygen & patients were dying while waiting to be seen or admitted that my heart is breaking imagining what its like in the hospitals of Gaza running out of resources.
Add the fact that they are working through constant bombardment and airstrikes, treating horrific amputations and burn injuries with little to no electricity now and no anesthesia. Add the fact that the medics & doctors are seeing their own families brought in terribly injured or dead. They're getting calls while on duty that their families were killed and its suspected they were specifically targeted.
You could tell me the doorway to hell was under these hospitals/schools/mosques/churches/refugee camps and I promise it wouldn't change how I feel about this. Attacking these places filled with innocent civilians is wrong. How can people see the images and footage I'm seeing and say well, if bombing the entire Gaza Strip gets rid of Hamas then the end justifies the means? It can't! The cost of human life is too high! And that's without even accounting for the propaganda and lies in the mix.
Like many above a certain age I watched the events of 9/11 unfold and a lot of us in the global south actually mourned with the American people. And like the American people we too were swayed by the media's lies so we just silently watched the invasion into Iraq and Afghanistan only for the lies to come out years later. 20 years bombing the hell out of those countries and slaughtering the people indiscriminately and it didn't get rid of the Taliban or other terrorist groups. But I bet it helped to radicalise more to their cause.
Israel is using the same playbook and none should be surprised if the result is the same, if any Palestinian children of today become the Hamas of tomorrow after what they've suffered. I don't support Hamas but I can understand why they would continue to exist and why they might get willing support. And even if Hamas is all that the media says they are, it still wouldn't justify the collective punishment being meted out to the Palestinian people. Killing 8 times the amount of people you lost isn't justice!
I genuinely can't understand how so many can't see that. That there are people celebrating this large loss of life.
I do feel some hope that there are so many rallying behind Palestine, that many are trying to learn more and speak out and that in seeking out information about this, many of us have also learned more about other injustices like in DR Congo & Sudan. But I'm also deeply troubled by the lack of empathy I'm seeing and the cruelty being exalted. I'm angry that the so-called leaders of the free world are letting this happen.
I'm gonna keep talking and sharing what I can and I hope those of you who feel similarly do as well. Keep calling for the protection of hospitals as they work to save lives. Keep calling for a ceasefire to stop the bloodshed and so aid may be let in unhindered. Don't stay silent in the face of genocide. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

"People were hanged in front of patients."
Bisan Owda (@wizard_bisan1) spoke to Palestinians in December who survived Israel's dayslong siege of the Indonesian Hospital, one of northern Gaza's largest health care facilities. Eyewitnesses say Israeli forces tortured and killed wounded people. A nurse told AJ+ that people inside the hospital were forced to sleep in the same rooms as corpses.

9 February 2024
Journalist Hossam Shabat shares the testimony of Dr. Abdul Karim Jamal Abu Odeh, a doctor from Beit Hanoun who has forced out of hospitals by the IOF while caring for patients. He was in the Indonesian Hospital, working for over a month straight when the IOF invaded and forced everyone out. Today, he was forced out of Kamal Adwan Hospital. In total he has been displaced three times. He writes,
I write to you these words from hands trembling from the cold and nothing else, after a period of more than three months of interruption of communication and communications, and a blackout of what happened and is happening in northern Gaza.
Four months later, I spent more than fifty nights in the corridors of the Indonesian hospital from the beginning of the battle until the day it was stormed, and God saved me from it.
Then they stormed the area where I was taking refuge in Jabalia and imposed a siege on us, but God saved us from it.
Many have been filled with the kindness of God Almighty to His servants by saving us many times.
The march is still continuing.
Today, a month later, at Kamal Adwan Hospital, accompanied by my brother, Dr. Abdullah Abu Al-Jidyan, general surgery specialist.

Motaz has updated! A friend of Bisan's (whatif.emansobhy on IG) says she's okay!🙏🏾 Hopefully we see her post soon, still waiting to see an update from Plestia and a few others as well.
The carnage we're seeing at the hospitals after last night is truly horrific. People screaming and covered in blood, bodies torn...all civilians far as I can tell.
I can't fully put my words together right now except to say CEASEFIRE NOW!

I hadn't known about the history of the Indonesian hospital in Gaza. The story is pretty amazing. It began with talks between the Health Ministers of Palestine and Indonesia where the Palestine government decided to give a piece of land for Indonesia to build a hospital there. And then the Health Minister of Indonesia started go collect funds for it from the people of Indonesia. So it was the people's donation that funded the building of the hospital. And not only that. Indonesian people actually volunteer to be in Gaza and worked as builders despite their actual professions as teachers, university lecturers and scholars back home. It's amazing and I have only known this because Israhell is bombing it 😢

every accusation is a confession.
one side is using a hospital to set up headquarters and shelter its combatants.
it's the idf. they have been using the indonesian hospital as their base for two weeks. this was reported by the medical emergency rescue committee (MER-C), a humanitarian organisation that helped build the hospital.
Tumblr media
here are a few sources, all in indonesian. excerpt from CNN:
"What is happening now, around two weeks ago, Israel placed its troops and [turned] [the Indonesian Hospital] into its headquarters. Previously, they accused the hospital of serving as Hamas' headquarters, and no Hamas member was there," said Sarbini.
right now, MER-C is asking for the WHO to investigate. from detik:
"We, MER-C, wish to condemn these underhanded methods carried out by Israel, which used the Indonesian Hospital as a base, fortification, and this was done to attack the fighters in Palestine," explained Sarbini. "We also ask the World Health Organization (WHO) to send a team to investigate so that this doesn't become a bad thing," he continued.

Israeli tanks close in on a Palestinian hospital. Doctors and medical staff are warned that they must leave — with or without patients in need. Artillery assaults follow, even if thousands of people are still inside.
On Monday, it was the turn of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, Gaza. At least 12 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on the facility, even as armoured vehicles edge closer and closer to the hospital.
But it was only the latest medical centre to face the wrath of the Israeli army.
Six weeks into its war on Gaza, Israel’s attacks on hospitals have emerged almost as a motif of the conflict, even though refugee camps, schools and churches have not been spared either. At least 21 of Gaza’s 35 hospitals — including the strip’s solo cancer centre — are completely out of service, and others have been damaged and are short of medicines and essential supplies. . . . On Friday, Israel’s military extended its approach in Gaza to the occupied West Bank, where armoured vehicles surrounded at least four hospitals. The Ibn Sina Hospital, one of the largest in the West Bank, was raided. And in early November, Israeli forces arrested some patients and their attendants from an East Jerusalem hospital.
But why does Israel target Palestinian hospitals given that this also brings significant criticism from leading human rights organisations, which have accused it of war crimes? . . . Israel claimed Hamas was using al-Shifa as a command centre, for instance. But Hamas has denied that claim, and days after taking control of the facility, Israel has been unable to provide strong evidence to back its assertions.
The real reason Israel targets hospitals is different, according to Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Doha-based Middle East Council on Global Affairs. It is a form of psychological warfare, he said.
“Attacking hospitals tells the population that nowhere for [Palestinians] is safe,” Rahman told Al Jazeera, adding that Israel acts with “total impunity”.
