Ok ill bite whats the worst mg series

alright, whats the worst magical girl series in your opinion?

Thanks you two for letting me do some yelling. The obvious guess would likely be one of the recent edgelord shows right? Magical Girl Site or something similar? But nay I say, for while MGS and Day Break Illusion and such and what not generally tell you what to expect right away. Don't like super violence and suffering? Watch something else is the clear message from the get go. One of the bait and switch series then like Madoka or maybe Yuki Yuna? For what faults they may or may not have, at least these series do something and are interesting, even if you're not huge on what goes down in the series. A parody then? They range from affectionate to banned in New Zealand but regardless of quality and their feelings for MGs, it's a parody. It's a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously (plus they're usually short so you can just forget about them forever).

So what makes a series terrible then, I am sure you are asking. IMO? Setting expectations for an interesting and enjoyable series, and then dashing them to hell.

Come with me below the cut, as I talk about Key Princess Story: Kagihime Eternal Alice Rondo!

Spoilers abound so if you care about those for a 15 year old series, click away.

Background: Kagihime was a 4 volume manga that ran from 2004-2006 that was picked up for a 13 episode anime adaptation near the end of its run. The manga is created by a pair (Kaishaku) who you may know for making Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto. Kannazuki no Miko, and Steel Angel Kurumi, and the anime had a script written by the same writer (Mamiko Ikeda) for Tenshi Ni Narumon who also did some script writing for Princess Tutu and Seven of Seven. The anime also had 6 character music videos which are fairly simple but a nice addition to the series for the main girls. Discotek has been publishing the anime in the states in recent years, and the manga was brought over by *squints at book spine* Dr Master Publications.

The Premise: Girls transform and enter weird outside of reality spaces to fight each other with giant keys to take each other’s stories to create a third Alice In Wonderland story.

Well, an off-brand Alice story written by Alternate L. Takion, rather than Lewis Carroll/Charles Dodgson, that while the series uses all the aesthetic hallmarks of the tradition Alice, the little we see of the in universe Alice story is clearly different. Which is fine, at the end of the day, it’s still about someone who loves the Alice stories and wishes there was more, and even makes his own fanfiction version. His? Oh yeah, while the girls do all the fighting, the main character is Aruto, a teen boy who loves Alice, and for reasons we don’t know till late game, can enter the liminal spaces that the ‘Alice Users’ fight in. He chases a girl who looks like the Alice he sees in his story, who is named Arisu, and gets roped into this fanfic battle royale. He is also the older brother of the very needy Kirihara, who also ends up being and Alice User. As does Kirihara’s bff Kisa. To round out the group of enemies-turned-friends-who-will-work-together-to-collect-the-Eternal-Alice-without-having-to-fight-eachother group is a young genius researcher Kirika who wants to know more about Aruto’s connection that allows him to enter the spaces where the girls fight.

Then there’s all the other girls, some of whom still have real importance to the story and some who have a few panels or 2 scenes total. But with a whole bunch of girls to design, the creators reached out to a whole lot of other people to have them create designs! Eventually the battle gets down to the last few girls, there’s a confrontation with the guy running the whole thing, and while the anime and manga vary quite a bit the whole time, in both version Aruto ends up with Kirihara. Oh and Arisu was created by Aruto’s super imagination powers.

The Promise: Here on is subjective, particularly with what I personally saw as potential from this series. because I need you to understand how much I want to like this series.

~Alice in Wonderland themed: I know some people aren’t alice fans and that’s fine you do you but as a big alice fan this is great. We have a few alice episodes and themed characters amongst series like CCS and MGRP, and even Alice themes in other series like Tweeny Witches and Alice 19th. But damn it I am down for Alice series.

~Giant Keyyyyyyyys: Yeah yeah Kingdom Hearts but these keys are much more staff like for a lot of the characters which ads and air of elegance rather than the KH ones that for me at least feel well designed for big ol props rather than actual weapons. We also get...

~Weapon variety: It counts as a key if it’s a thorn whip that can be shaped like a key right? How about a giant pocket knife? Crossbows can also be keys. Hush. And we have this variety because

~Guest Artists: For magical girl series where we have a variety of outfits designed by different people, we have Kagihime, Uta~Kata, and uhh I guess Magia Record? But that’s a mobile game with a hella number of characters and with how mobile game works I wouldn’t count it just because it’s less the intent of the series to have variety and more the nature of having lots of girls. (Precure doesn’t count because unless I missed a memo each season’s set is still by one designer). If a series isn’t about a team and therefore doesn’t need cohesion, bringing in other artists is a great way for variety and new looks.

~The long term goal: Fighting with other people who love the same piece of media you do in hopes of creating new material that will be viewed as official? That’s just fandom nowadays. But it’s a legitimate interesting concept, and opens up so many doors for a message for the series, be it ‘what you create is no less valuable than the canon work’ or ‘it’s hard to let go when something you love doesn’t have more to it but you can still love it for what it is’ or ‘bond with the people who like the thing you like ya idiot instead of fighting about it’. The concept is interesting and there are so many narrative ways you can take this.

~Gays: Between the anime and manga, we have at least 5 wlw. Is it a magical girl series without some gays? (side note- the manga had a short thing where the MC wears a girl’s uniform and is pretty comfortable in it and while there is no way this was the intent, between that and the emphasis on the stories that live in girls and how the fight zones have no men, I’m just saying, Trans girl Aruto.)

~Greater Fairy Tale Premise: We meet a Little Match Girl based MG who is obsessed with Andersen rather than the Alice books, and touch on a Sleeping Beauty character in the manga. The manga at least implies that classic stories and fairy tale authors uh. Live on in a liminal space as immortals with world warping powers within that world and there could be opportunities for other girls in the real world to fight for Little Mermaid 2: Electric Boogaloo.

The Good: Everything has positive points, no matter how bad it is.

~Character Designs: Some of those looks slap. As do most of their weapons.

~Backgrounds: I have a strong opinion on backgrounds in anime that can be easily boiled down to old watercolor backgrounds good, modern filtered photos as background bad, and as a 2006 series, this might not be Memole nice but they’re quite attractive.

~Splash Pages: Easily my favorite thing after the designs, each chapter’s title page for the manga just has a character standing in a setting. Which is not everyone’s thing I’m sure but it’s a nice simplistic way to let the characters breathe imo. Even if at least some of the settings were deffo traced. But that’s how backgrounds work to some extent? If I ever get to the Met again, I am tracking down this exact photo, but here is a likely candidate for an example.

~Different Versions: I do not understand the need to make an adaptation that tries to be a 1:1. Kagihime had the same ideas and characters and did some of the same beats but very much had a different finale story and a lot of changes in the middle (like the Alice cops in the manga). Again, not something everyone probably wants I’m sure, but I very appreciate this, especially since the Anime kept good pace with the number of Manga chapters (reading the manga again while watching the anime at 3.8x speed just now was very interesting to see the different interpretations of events in a different medium.)

The ‘Fine’: Yeah.

~Anime Visuals: Look 2006 was still early enough into digipaint that I will give it a total pass on these. The colors are too bright but in a very bland way, the lineart is nothing interesting, and the faces are. Iffy. But it’s not total garbage to look at (probably helped by backgrounds and character designs...) it just came out in an era where not enough people knew how to stylize things to account for the weakness of the tools of the time. (It was 4 years earlier but I feel Kagihime is the polar opposite of Chobits with its painfully bland color palette while still being just. Flat. Sorry for the drive by Chii.)

~Music?: There sure were songs. Obviously, they are nothing to me.

The Bad: CW for.... somehow all the big things to an extent.

~Fanservice: Look, I am fine with fanservice, especially for a series that’s, ya know, not targeted at kids, big Mai Hime fan here even if I would recommend skipping the panty thief episode. And honestly the series generally isn’t fanservicey, at least by the modern standards of having the camera choosing under the skirt rather than an over the shoulder shot like I’ve seen plenty in other shows. Even the sexier outfits like the rose whip dominatrix aren’t bad BUT. When the girls fight. One takes her phallic key and drives it into another girls chest between the boobs while the loser cries in pain and then her book comes out and when the victor rips out pages, the loser’s clothes also rip. It is very SuperS Amazon Trio assault metaphor-y. There’s also a bit of fanservice with the sister becauseeeee....

~Incest: If you read the premise up there, first wow good job because I’m sure not re-reading that, you might have noticed I said MC ends up with his sister. As someone who is a big mythology fan and watches plenty of anime, I have a decent tolerance for your obligatory ‘oh we’re siblings but actually cousins so our feelings are okay’ or whatever the fuck Citrus has going on I don’t know that series and I don’t vibe BUT. I have limits and boy did this series go beyond that because multiple episodes are dedicated to the sister being in love with the brother? And the brother returns her feelings but knows that they are wrong so he put everything he likes in his sister into his version of Alice who, of course, physically manifests as Arisu who he creates accidentally with his uh. Magic imagination powers. But again in both versions MC still ends up with his sister. Hey, at least the manga eventually said the boy was adopted when the sister was like, 3, so if nothing else no blood relations? The anime did not ad this. -_-

~Under Utilized Characters: Arisu’s gradual revelation that she has no childhood memories because she isn’t a real person is so interesting and they don’t do nothing with it but also? That’s the kind of thing I personally would love to dig into and Kagihime, while touching on this world shattering revelation, easily loops back to So Anyway She Should Fight For The Man and to hell with developing a life or personality outside of what has been written for her. The rest of the main 5 were 2 note characters which. Could be worse? The most interesting character ends up being the child genius who accidentally murdered her childhood bestie (and/or lover? depending on version) and her coming to terms with that (the friend is alive but the version changes how and why she thinks she’s dead). Then the villain has the motivation of ‘i lost my creativity and now have become an immortal living outside of normal space and am getting girls to fight each other because that’s like a story so I’m still relevant right?’. But shoutout to the anime for then taking death of the author literally. The numerous other girls are canon fodder outside of like. The manga version of the dead gf and the little match girl.

~Battle Royale: This is not a thing I have an issue with generally. Again, but Mai Hime fan, I need to read MGRP 11, BUT by not developing the non-main girls there is no emotional connection which makes them just canon fodder and that’s boring as sin for a royale system. The initial main character fights revolve so much around the MC guy being there that they fall flat, and the 2 or 3 final battles in both versions still feel without any stakes. Also for a royale thing most of the characters don’t actually die, which cool! Neat! Except when they do? Some nobodies and a somebody are murdered (at least in the manga) and the tone never feels like it’s supposed to be upping the stakes, it’s just. Some people are dead now. And do you want to guess which of the main characters died?

~Gays: Oh boy the best friend of the brother-complex sister is in love with her and (in the manga) dies. She does apparently get better for the last chapter but the death itself is only felt by the rest of the cast for a page or two before we go back to feeling sad big brother wants to kiss his mentally generated sister clone rather than his actual sister u_u. Bury your gays is nothing new, but I wonder if it was also intended to be justified because Guess Who Is Creepy and a bit Perverted? Oh look the lesbian keeps the used swimsuit of her beloved and manipulates events to get an indirect kiss and when she sees the sister trying to strange Arisu for a moment she decides to do it for the sister? It’s not good. You want bad gay rep in a magical girl series, well here ya go. We also had a nobody in the first(second?) episode whose story pages reveal her having a kiss with a girl, and then we also have the prodigy again and- in the manga- her. Uh. childhood lover who she thought she killed but the girl has been wiping her mind over and over so prodigy remembers ‘killing’ the friend and not the she’s alive so she can keep? fucking with her? Toxic!

~Sexual Content: But wait you say, you already covered fanservice! Ah but that is sexual content for titilation. This is sexual content for dramatic backstory! The red riding hood character was sexually assaulted, another character was manipulated into sex first as a teen and then more often to ‘get into the publishing industry’, and the same writer forces some aggressive kisses on the MC. None of it is gratuitous which is nice, but also, was it necessary? Not making a new point for this but read riding hood’s dog was also murdered so unnecessary animal death gets tossed on in there.

~Male Lead: You can have a male, non magical character as the main character surrounded by magical girls. This is not how to do it. If I can make a vicious and hopefully not understood reference, Aruto is basically Tate from the Mai Hime Manga. If you understood that, I am so sorry. If you didn’t, congrats! Don’t read the manga. Or do and send me asks about the iconic final page of the first volume (18+). Anyway, this dude is boring, everything revolves around him, BUT I’ll be generous and say at least this isn’t a harem series? It looks like it out of context but it’s just a triangle with a fun attached scientist and token lesbian.

~Premise: They didn’t make good use of it. The initial goals of ‘take other girls pages from their soul books because if we get enough we unlock a third alice book’ is good! And then we add the twist that that was never going to happen and either if we get all the pages we can grant a wish, or these fights are just happening for the amusement of and asshole. Either way, yeah okay I guess. But at no point do we ever achieve this forbidden wish granting book and the asshole just. Lives. Nothing happens to him. His peers don’t even dunk on him. The only real changes from the beginning and the end of the series are: the siblings are now chill with dating, and the scientist lady won’t turn into a child in magical spaces. Oh. Yeah.

~Why did we make this adult a child sometimes?: I think we know why. Stop trying to get those types of folks to watch your already meh series. I also could have sworn at points in the past looking up images for this series I’ve seen extra art for Yuuri the Thumbelina-y Alice User that seemed like it would fit alongside anything by POP. You know, the Moetan guy. If you don’t know, god I wish that were me.

Wrap Up: I have definitely forgotten some points and am well within my rights to ad to this whenever I remember more points but uh. Yeah.

Listen you want an alice themed battle royale with nice outfits? Rozen maiden is right there. Battle Royale magical girl series that’s good with fanservice? Mai Hime. Series with different outfits while being based on a classic story? Pretear.

Hello, sorry to bother you for this when you probably already answered something similar. First of all, I love your writing and your fics, you're one of the greatest writers in the stony fandom and we are lucky to have you. You have gotten me into comics!Stony, but I have just read a few and would like to know more but I don't know where to begin. Can you suggest a reading list or something?

I don’t know what you have or haven’t read; my starter rec is pretty much always the miniseries Captain America: Man Out of Time because it’s short, modern, easy to read if you’re new to comics, a retelling of Steve’s origin story, and it has a lot of nice Steve/Tony moments. Other than that, “The Confession” is the issue that set the Steve/Tony ship sailing and you can probably appreciate the angst without a lot of context. (If you want some context, the issue “Casualties of War” basically recaps Steve and Tony’s friendship at the time of Civil War.)

If you’ve read those… hmm. I kind of feel like there should be some kind of flowchart-style list based on your preferences:

my ice-cold, brr-chilly frozen story

before the party is over, i’d like to tell my frozen story (since i’ve seen a lot of people write theirs today)

IT ALL BEGAN IN JULY 2013

i remember finding a picture of anna on rotoscopers and discovering a daily dose of frozen on tumblr (they were actually the first blog i followed besides staff in 2015)

AND THAT’S HOW I DISCOVERED TUMBLR THE END

i became hyped about the movie and yearned for new content since there was only three teaser posters, a still that wasn’t even in the movie and an animation test from 2012

sometime in august or september, the first few parts of let it go leaked, along with test animation. i showed them to my bff at the time and she was all like

“cool”

then on september 26th, a miracle happened

THE FIRST TRAILER WAS RELEASED OMG

i remember being so excited that i replayed it over and over agian. then it came on tv and i told my mom “LOOK IT’S FROZEN OMG YAAAAAAAY!”

for the next two months, tv spots flooded the airwaves and interwebs and i looked at every single one of them.

i was super hyped for the jr novel to come out on october 1st and i gobbled up the spoilers. i gobbled up all the spoilers i could SO WHOOPS

for my b-day (october 25th), i went to the disney store with my parents and grandma and got three dolls. punzie, merida and of course ANNA!

the movie came out a month later. i got home from school and saw punzie and eugene in ftftif, which made me more hyped than ever. my bff and i went to the picture show at pv mall and brought our classic dolls (i had anna she had elsa)

then i finally FINALLY saw frozen.

i remember being like, “OMG YAS” and “i remember that from the books!” and “yay the full version of let it go” and “I LOVE YOU ANNA”

after that, i searched for clips of the movie on youtube so i could watch it again and again.i bought the dvd as soon as it came out and watched it again and again AND AGAIN. i saw it so many times that i could recite every single line after frozen heart. i stopped at ftftif so i could listen to the song, but i’m sure i would’ve gone on.

for the last day of school in 2014, my teacher wanted to watch a movie.

SO I BROUGHT IN FROZEN AND THAT’S WHAT WE WATCHED BBY!

besides watching the movie, i also watched a heck-ton of multi-language songs and even made a couple of my own (malay is the best one after english i still love it so much).

when the making of frozen aired on abc, my dad recorded it and made it into a dvd (which i still have) and i became hyped for big hero 6.

despite bh6 taking over my disney side, i continued loving frozen in 2014, but in 2015, it all changed...

ROBNA WAS WRITTEN

this fan-fic with senpai was in an alternate universe, so i wanted to distance it from the actual frozen movie. i was a little hyped for frozen fever, but it was clear that my love was dying just like anna’s frozen heart.

just before frozen fever came out, i remember walking past my teacher’s desk in school. she stopped me and asked, “do you know what’s coming out today?” she smiled. “frozen fever.”

i was so happy that i went back to my desk and did a quick drawing of anna and elsa in their new b-day gear. i saw the short in theaters and bought the disney store two pack of anna and elsa. for a moment, it seemed as though my love had returned.

but it hadn’t.

i still loved frozen in 2016 and 17, but i only loved it from afar. it wasn’t as strong as before and i only bought a few small anna and elsa mini dolls.

BUT THEN OLAF’S FROZEN ADVENTURE CAME OUT

i had heard of it and was like “oh okay another frozen short coolio”, but i didn’t go “OMG YAS ANOTHER FROZEN SHORT SOOOOO COOLIO!” until i saw it on tv. my eyes were glued to the screen the entire time and, as i watched it when it re-aired, i realized something.

‘i love frozen again’. YAS QUEEN!

this past year, i followed a bunch of frozen blogs and rekindled my love for the movie i had cherished so dearly just a few years ago.

and here we are on frozen’s fifth anniversary. it’s hard to belive that it’s been five years since i watched the movie at 3 in the afternoon with classic anna on my lap, but here i am, typing this at 9:50 at night with the same classic anna on my desk.

now if you’ll excuse me, i’m gonna go watch frozen for the first time in forever.

There was a plan. It was the most ingenious plan that we’ve ever come up with. It was the most detailed one. It was what we called as the Ultimate BFF Plan or the Ultimate Best Friends Forever Plan.

The plan stated that we’d both go to the same university and get into a mixed dormitory so that we could apply for a shared room. If not, we could always look for a cheap apartment to rent. We found a university that offered both our desired courses.

It was far from home but I loved that plan. He loved it too.

The thought of college was daunting and with that plan, it felt that we could take on the world because we had each other at close proximity. He was my rock. He’s the one I could lean on—the one I could count on. Being with him in the same college would mean that I wouldn’t have to worry about time differences and conflicting semestral break schedules just so that we could talk about our lives.

But there was another reason why I loved that plan. I’ve always harbored secret feelings for the man.

The way he would tease me about the smallest of things. The way he would act cutely just so I would pay attention to him. The way he’d say things so maturely despite how childish and immature he acts most of the time.

However, life happens.

I remember the day we got our application results. We were together because we promised to look at it at the same time. I was nervous and excited. I was so high-spirited because I knew and I believed that our plan was a hundred percent fool-proof.

I was wrong.

I cried in his arms after the words written on my letter sunk in. I cried even after he went home. I continued to cry days after.

My heart and soul felt broken as the words kept on scrolling in my head like a marquee.

We regret to inform you that you did not make the cut for your chosen program.

Because of my short-comings, the plan was gone. He didn’t say anything but I knew he was disappointed. I saw it in his eyes yet he said,

“It’s not like we can’t see each other again. I can fly to where you will be or you can fly out to my place. We can alternate every break.”

He was encouraging. It was the first time he didn’t make fun of me when I cried. He did his best to uplift my mood but I knew that even he was struggling with the news.

Getting through the rest of the school year was difficult. I found another school, one that was closer to home but one that was miles away from him. I tried to look for one that was about a four- or five-hour drive away but nothing. Their programs weren’t what I was looking for.

So enough, we were both standing in our togas. Proud smiles yet conflicted eyes were staring at each other as we stood in the courtyard. The ceremony was finished.

He was leaving in a few hours. His dad was driving him to the airport. I couldn’t go and send him off because I have to pack my own things too. Despite the relatively close proximity from home, I wasn’t willing to drive for two hours just to get to school. I was going to stay in an all-female dormitory within the school’s proximity.

“This is it, huh?” I sadly smiled at him.

My heart was breaking because I wasn’t going to see him everyday anymore.

“Don’t say it that way,” he sighed, trying to be hopeful. “You’re my partner in crime. You’re my best friend. We’ll make this work,”

Best friend.

My heart was crushed even more. Was there no part of him that ever liked me? Probably.

“But you’ll be miles away. The time difference, the workload… Everything,” I was being pessimistic again. “It’s going to be difficult without you,”

“You can do it. I know you and I’ve seen how you overcame your problems,” he said. “If anything goes wrong, we can always call each other. We can video chat whenever,”

We sound like a couple who was about to part ways while trying to keep their relationship. Oh, how you wish (Y/N).

“I guess so,” I mumbled. “Sungjae,”

“What? Are you going to cry again?” He teased, a grin on his lips. I knew he was just trying to make me laugh.

“No. Maybe you will,” I huffed. “I saw you wipe your eyes during the valedictorian’s speech,”

“No,” he answered quickly and defensively. “I… I just had some dust in my eyes,”

“Liar~” I teased. He pouted and all I could do was softly smile at how cute he was being. He stood like a giant yet he’s the softest giant I know.

We stood there just observing each other. It seemed like we were trying to memorize each other’s features before we part for a long time and before things change. We knew that college was going to change us both. We wanted to remember each other the way we are now. Hopefully, we could meet again and still be who we are now.

I don’t know what he’s seeing when he studied me but I could see in him the man who made my heart race every day. I was trying to recall those times he made me smile, the times he made my heart flutter, and the times he made me feel frustrated. I was doing my best to remember all the memories we shared. If I could, I would’ve tattooed those in my mind so that they’d stick with me forever.

The more I remembered, the more I felt the urge to tell him. After all, we were going to part ways for a long while. I’ve always been itching to tell him but I never got the chance. Maybe now’s the time. Maybe I should before things between us change for the better or for the worse.

But how?

I looked into his eyes. Sungjae tilted his head to the side, wondering why I was looking the way I did. He was probably seeing the internal conflict inside me through my eyes. He was good at that: reading people.

I bit down on my lip as I made my choice. If he says no, then at least we’d be going our different ways. If he says yes, then we’ll talk about it. If he says he doesn’t know, then… Then even I wouldn’t know.

“Sungjae,” I softly called out his name.

“What? You look like you’re about to pull your hair out,” he chuckled. “What’s bothering you?”

I shook my head as I took in a deep breath. I knew what I had to do. Bravely, I stepped forward. My eyes never left his and he was just watching me curiously. The only time that I tore my gaze from his was when I closed my eyes as I pushed myself to stand on my tiptoes.

My heart was pounding as I pressed my lips onto his. He was still as a stone while I felt like I was going to melt.

1 second.

2 seconds.

3 seconds.

I pulled away and quickly stepped back. I looked at his face but I couldn’t understand the expression on it. I couldn’t bear to look at it so I turned my gaze to the ground below us.

I felt like my heart was going to explode in this deafening silence.

“Sorry,” he finally sighed.

I quickly shook my head as I shut my eyes. I could feel the tears prickling the corners of my eyes but I did my best not to let them fall.

“(Y/N),” he pleaded for me to look at him.

“It’s okay,” I tried to brush it off while laughing. God, my heart was hurting like hell. My ears hurt at the sound of my fake laughter. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have,”

“Can we talk about this?”

I was about to tell him that he shouldn’t bother and that it was a mistake but his dad had approached us to say that they had to leave. I could only sigh in relief.

“Dad, please. I just… I just need a minute,” Sungjae sighed. “Please,”

“It’s okay,” I said, pushing myself to smile at him. “You should go. You might miss your flight,” my voice was getting softer with each word.

Stupid, I cursed myself repeatedly.

“We can always talk about it some other time,” I added.

“But…” He was about to argue but I shook my head. He saw the defeated smile on my lips. He saw that even if he didn’t say anything, I knew what he meant when he said sorry.

I’m sorry. I can’t return those feelings.

“Go,” I nodded at him. “Be well,” I said and moved to hug him tightly despite the awkwardness. “Show the world what kind of genius Yook Sungjae is despite his idiotic moments,”

I was trying to lighten the mood.

“Take care,” I whispered before letting him go. With pursed lips, I gave him one last wave and turned my back towards him.

My lower lip quivered as my heart continued to clench in pain with each step I took. A tear slid down my cheek and another followed. They continued to pour out of my eyes as I walked away from him.

I know I said that we’d talk about it some other time but I couldn’t. I was a coward. That was the last time we ever spoke to each other.

So… things sure do keep happening in LL, don’t they.

I mean, on the one hand, I’m distraught, because everything is a disaster. But I am also super stoked, because everything is a disaster.

Going back to the older seasons, I mean, season one started with the ship engines exploding, them losing contact with Cybertron, miscellaneous crewmembers dying, and a sparkeater getting loose. Season two started with Optimus wedging Megatron onto the crew, they find Rodimus’s quantum duplicate corpse, the ship and crew start evaporating, and the remaining crewmembers wind up on a ship full of their friends’ corpses.

It makes good sense to start things off with a shitshow, that’s how you lay the groundwork for exciting future developments, and pack as much as you can into a script. And given that, so… for the run of MTMTE, despite all the disasters they were dealing with, there was a lot of positive character growth happening, and a lot of developing bonds between characters. That is good! But not a good dynamic for the shape of this story, in the direction the plot has gone. If the Dying of the Light crew was all together, all getting on well, then all the tension comes from the outside. It’s… a balance that can work, but it would be really unbalanced in comparison to the previous arcs in this series.

One of the things I’ve tried to do and stalled out on is circular plotting (usually just almost circular, with a twist to make it deliberately distinct). Like, Tailgate being trapped underground, but being trapped awake and with full knowledge of what’s happening to him. Cyclonus is free-floating and dangerously unattached and mourning a massive loss, but this time it’s all about personal connections, and Whirl has flipped from being a casually homicidal enemy into a supportive friend. But with a possible extra angle on the parallel of feeling betrayed and angry over how Galvatron used him, and how he’ll feel when he finds out Whirl was the one initiated Tailgate’s breakup. There are… haha, wow, so many characters and so many angles that I think I stall out from just the sheer scale of it all.

Anyways, maybe if I just write about deteriorating bonds, that’s manageable in terms of parameters. Most of the series was about building bonds, and messing with those is that almost-circular plotting thing that steals their progress away and hurts the characters and makes me upset because I’m emotionally invested and want everyone to be happy. And I can write it as a list. I sure like lists.

This isn’t meant to be making a grand point or anything. Sorting information just brings me great pleasure, and sorting comic analysis data points means I have to hunt my information prey down in the wild before I can pin it to a board.

Everybody from the marooned crew and everybody on the Lost Light. Plus presumably the mutineers and the group arriving with First Aid. That’s going to be… interesting :P

Special shout out to Thunderclash. I have Thoughts about the image of perfection and being cornered into maintaining that image at all costs, and further thoughts about the strain of maintaining that kind of performance for so long. Even if many/most of the aspects of it come naturally, that’s a hard standard to live up to. But he was THE model autobot, he made friendly noises at Ratchet, Drift, and Ultra Magnus… and he was a prominent member of the mutineers. I’m curious as to how this affects people’s image of him.

Tailgate

Well, the breakup is the biggest, most obvious thing, both in terms of the character, and in terms of overall broken bonds. The development of the relationship between him and Cyclonus has been building for so long, and now… this.

Cyclonus and Whirl started from attempted murder, wandered over to the land of ‘I trust you to be brutally honest with me’, and accidentally drifted into bff waters, which was amazing and I loved it. And right now, Whirl is Cyclonus’s main support structure and oh wow that is an amazing sentence that I never properly thought through before. I am SO EXCITED for the cyclonus and whirl show. But… Whirl told Tailgate some information Cyclonus especially, especially told him not to, and it initiated Tailgate dumping him hard. I believe 0% that this information is going to stay secret forever, and it’s going to be rough.

Additionally, while the actual commanders were on their alternate universe teleportation field trip, Cyclonus was in charge on Necroworld. And he did SO GOOD with people! He was good with Brainstorm, with Ten, with Swerve, all while juggling more overt friendship things with Whirl and while being sweet with Tailgate. He shuts down when he’s struggling. And he sure has started struggling. Those were more casual connections, but I’m feeling like he’s lost his ability to feed them, and I don’t know how many will stand on their own. Whirl, yes, but everyone else is in question.

Is struggling. Swerve is really struggling. Skids noticed before, when he almost died… and Skids is dead.

Cyclonus has tried to help out here and there, including after the Killmaster incident… And Cyclonus is having a rough, rough time and is probably not in any position to help anyone.

Tailgate was one of his closer friends. Tailgate is gone.

That’s three of his biggest support structures gone in a very, very short time span. How much does he even have left? He’s not in a great place, and almost everyone around him is preoccupied with their own problems. I am worried.

Nautica

Aww, honey :( This one hurts me extra, because she spent her time on the Lost Light building bonds to the extent that she amica-married five people at once, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised she’s having an extra rough time.

The Skids thing, that’s the biggest one. And especially with the way she fought to find a miracle solution, and the way that worked out… yeah, that’s rough.

But then the Velocity business, with blaming her over Skids, and being willing to sacrifice her friendship over it. Even if she didn’t follow through, she agreed to it in the first place. Even with Velocity saying she didn’t want to become friends again with someone who would do that to their relationship. And she took a cheap shot at how hard Velocity had to work to pass the medical exam. Yeah, the issue “worked out”, but even if it got resolved in the moment, that is some heavy stuff to lay on what had been an incredibly sweet, supportive relationship.

Now, Rung is also struggling bad over the Skids thing. He’s grieving pretty hard, and was doing it all alone, until Nightbeat came swooping in. And he’s also aware that he wanted to fight on Necroworld, and it was being Nightbeat who wound up preventing him from doing that, so he wasn’t even around or helping when Skids died. Now… how is he going to feel about Nautica selling off her grief like that? From a professional or personal perspective?

Rung

There’s Skids, for one, and the way Nautica plays into that.

But also recall MTMTE 40, where Ratchet sent Skids to go make conversation with Rung, because Ratchet didn’t think Rung was really getting to talk to anyone outside of his work. And then the Froid mess happened, and Rung stepped down from his position. So he’s not getting to talk to Skids anymore. He’s not even getting to talk to people for work anymore. Nightbeat has stepped up to the plate, but if he gets pulled away, Rung is very alone, and not doing that great.

Megatron

Oh boy, this gets messy and complicated. For a start, Megatron, and… everyone. Not intentionally. But nobody from the original crew knows about Terminus being a lying, manipulative jackass. As far as everyone else knows, he bailed. To a whoooole new wide world for him to do his Megatron thing. And a group of mainly autobots who lived through the war, that probably isn’t going to set people at ease. And in Megatron’s words, he thinks the others abandoned him.

There’s also something to be said about him wanting to start over with Optimus, and ignoring all the disparities in experience and history that mean that if he wants the fairytale bff relationship to happen, he’s going to have to be hella dishonest or hella manipulative.

But a special mention to Ultra Magnus and Rodimus, who will get more detail in their respective sections

And a special shout-out to reviving an old bond……… just an incredibly toxic, unhealthy one. Terminus spends virtually all his screen time trying to steer Megatron, and oh my god, I am Upset that Terminus has gotten him alone like this when he was already in a bad spot.

Ultra Magnus

The conversation with Rodimus about how Megatron read all of his reports and thanked him for writing them, it breaks my heart. Because when Ultra Magnus disappeared in season one, Rodimus’s inbox was full of unread messages from him, including one just titled ‘struggling’. Rodimus tries, but he’s not naturally suited to the same kind of meticulous minutia as Ultra Magnus is, and Ultra Magnus has already struggled hard with feeling isolated and lost. Megatron openly appreciated and respected him. I’m worried.

But the bond between Rodimus and Ultra Magnus was strengthened, you say? When they had that conversation about Megatron? Oh, the conversation where Rodimus said things he didn’t believe so he could manipulate Ultra Magnus into finding his motivation again. Yeahhhh… That was a good idea from Rodimus, and probably a good thing to do in the short term, but I don’t think it adds up to a healthy direction for them to go.

Rodimus

Rodimus has Issue with regards to being a leader, some relating back to spotlight: hot rod, some relating back to Optimus (in general). The Magnificence just came back into play, and as recently as season two, Optimus was not only failing to give Rodimus positive attention, but he was running roughshod over his autonomy. So…. This Megatron thing.

Megatron started out very antagonistic with Rodimus, but their command styles are very complementary when they work as a team, and he came to openly respect Rodimus, and defer to his judgment when he thought it appropriate. Good! All good, especially in contrast to neglectful dad Optimus Prime! And then… Rodimus was suspicious Megatron was going to bail on them. Megatron gave Rodimus his word. And as far as Rodimus knows, Megatron turned right around and broke that promise.

And Drift. Complicated, because most of that happened pre-LL, and they’ve been pretty chill in LL. But Rodimus let Drift take the fall when Overlord happened… and didn’t come to get him even after Drift didn’t have to stay away any longer. Rodimus already apologized, but kind of like the business with Nautica and Velocity, that’s one hell of a strain to have weighing on a relationship.

But it’s also interesting that he’s got one of the few clearly shown BUILT relationships that doesn’t fall the heck apart. He and Ratchet started off very ill at ease, where sometimes they were in tune, but sometimes they clashed in ugly ways. But they’re very much trusting each other right now, and there have been zero (0) fresh wedges driven between them since the new series started. Them and chromedome and rewind, those are the only people allowed to have positive relationships in peace :P

But, go back to that Drift thing. Ratchet already said some harsh things over Rodimus’s treatment of Drift, back in MTMTE 40. And he was also the person who went out and found Drift later, and saw the state he was in with refusing to maintain himself and all. I’m not surprised Drift forgave Rodimus, because he is a total sweetheart. But I’m very curious to see how Ratchet feels about the situation

And this isn’t anything definite, but… it’s really weird how there were like many big medical Things going on before people left Necroworld, and nobody went to Ratchet. What does that mean?? I’ve got no idea. None. But there were three doctors. The ex-LL crew mostly knew Ratchet personally, and mostly knew Velocity personally. And… Everyone went to Kaput. The best doctor, the best best doctor was right there, and they all took their issues to the new stranger. Why? I have no idea what it could even mean, but… WHY?

Anode (and Lug)

Yeah, that lying to your wife for a very long time about why you quit your old job, and her thinking that it’s her fault you gave up on this illustrious career, that’s…… uncomfortable. Cool, but uncomfortable. And then your wife is actually a ghost, but you revived her, but she doesn’t have all her post-death memories, which I think was implied to cover a good amount of history. They might have made up, and I’m positive they still adore each other, but that is some heavy shit, and I don’t have any confidence that everything is all worked out.

Ten

Starting from a nearly nonverbal position, has been treated as an unperson before, got the shaft three times in a row when it came to DOTL, and now one of the only people who was treating him as a PERSON is in a post-being-dumped shutdown.

Tailgate got left behind.

And Ultra Magnus is not doing so hot either.

I think Swerve might be the next closest friend he’s got, and Swerve kind of led the charge on the whole unperson thing. Swerve might be sorry, but the fact that each of them is may be the best emotionally available friend the other one has left, that is CONCERNING

Chromedome (and Rewind)

You guys are good. Much love. Maybe some conversation about the Dominus Ambus thing would be good, but you’re adorable and treating each other well. (edit: ooh, but I have been reminded about prowl's blackmail attempt that provoked chromedome to mneme on him. and prowl is inching closer back to the plot. popcorn dot gif, oh my goodness)

Brainstorm and Nightbeat

????? There’s the grief suppressants for Skids, which raise some Nautica-esque questions about coping with the grief and sacrificing the bond in favor of a release from grief (also very chromedome of them), but it’s not clear how permanent this is or how much they’re taking.

Is that everyone? I don’t even know anymore. I was wrong. All the scope is too much scope. I cut this short and my brain is still fizzing with trying to juggle all the pieces. The tl;dr version of this is that the majority of characters have been reduced to a state of alone (or nearly-alone) that’s pretty severe and pretty worrying. I mean, everybody is fucked in the head in some way in this series, whether it’s from the war or from other things. But it seemed like there had consistently been positive growth, especially in an interpersonal direction, until DOTL ended, and the stress and changes came crashing down on everyone.

Let’s Play “Moments: Hold Me, Leave Me” Part 9

Angela leaves William's hospital room in a daze. She can't possibly imagine that Grayson would have been so quick to change his tune. (Especially considering that this is coming from Grayson's father to her father, and not, you know, from Grayson to her.) She decides “fuck this. I'm not calling him. If he wants to marry me, he can very well propose like a normal person.” and goes home. She goes home and eats, and while she's doing that, gets a text from Grayson to meet him at the university.

At the university gardens, he says that his dad is forcing him to marry Angela. (No shit.) However, much like the baby, he finds the prospect of being a husband too much to handle. MAYBE THINK ABOUT THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU WANT TO GET YOUR DICK WET, ASSHOLE. However, Angela says that she doesn't want to marry a man who doesn't even remotely love her, and clearly thought of Angela as nothing more than a one-night stand to be tossed aside when he was done with her. He insists that he does care for her, but she screams that he should show it sometime. He grabs her as she tries to leave, but she shoves him away. He says that if this is how it's going to be, then this is goodbye. Forever, this time. She's expresses how glad she is about that, gets into her car, and goes home.

The next morning, Angela foregoes family breakfast in favor of... not being anywhere near her shitty, emotionally abusive and manipulative father. At the resort, Diana asks how William is, and then asks Angela to sit with her. She gives SAGE ADVICE. Wisdom +1 Courage +1. Angela decides that she should talk to her dad rather than try and avoid him forever.

Angela spends the rest of the day doing work. As she's leaving, she thinks about how she hasn't seen Jayden or Caroline all day. But then she runs into both of them in the parking lot. Caroline is also apparently not that big of a jackass and asks about William... however, she immediately follows this up with “he's such a good businessman.” She can't look at Jayden, and tries to leave for her car. However, Caroline makes some weird passing remark that implies she might know about the baby, but doesn't say anything further.

After a dinner alone in her room, Angela goes downstairs to talk to her dad. She apologizes for keeping everything from him. He says that Mr. Maxwell has called to apologize for calling off the wedding. (As if it was ever really on to begin with... Assholes.) Angela explains that Grayson wants jack-all to do with her. However, the only thing William gives a shit about is how this would look. WHAT YEAR IS IT. But Angela's like “I don't need this jackass in my life.” (And if William actually spent two seconds alone with Grayson, I'm pretty sure that he'd want to chuck him at the moon.) But William. Will. Not. Shut. Up. About. How. This. Will. Ruin. His. Reputation. Not Angela or what it means for her future... William's reputation. Because he's the absolute shit-fuck father of the year.

After William does the wheelchair version of storming from the room, Amelia comes over. She says that their father's behavior is shitty, toxic, and downright abusive. She also reminds Angela that William has no shits to give about anybody other than himself. Even his own children. Angela is upset and hurt, but Amelia is quick to remind Angela that “getting knocked up is ten times worse than dropping out of business school and moving to California to become a model.”

She then says that the boyfriend that Angela stopped Amelia from running away with killed himself when they were discovered. Like... I'm sorry that that happened, but if he was going to kill himself, it would have been sooner or later. He had stopped drinking and doing drugs before they planned to run away, but after they were caught, he started using again. His parents put him into rehab. To rub salt onto his wound, William threw away all of Andrew's letters to Amelia. She only got his last one, right before he killed himself. AND HOW THE HELL IS THAT YOUR SISTER'S FAULT? MAYBE IFYOU'D MADE BETTER LIFE CHOICES, AMELIA, YOU WOULDN'T BE IN THIS SITUATION RIGHT NOW. But, Angela feels guilty over that. Yay. /sarcasm

The next morning, people won't stop giving Angela weird looks as she gets in to work. Diana and Jayden look surprised to see her, and Caroline gleefully reads a newspaper to her. It's about how Angela got knocked up. Alternate article headline: Adult woman gets pregnant. No, seriously; why is that even news? All Angela has to do is to say “maybe people should mind their own business”, because the article states nothing that could be easily sourced (even if it's true, how do you prove that easily?). Instead, she tears up the paper, and storms out to her car. Jayden follows her out, and offers to drive her somewhere. BUT THAT'S VIP. Instead, she gets into his face about how one Maxwell has already ruined her life, and she doesn't want to “ruin daddy's reputation” further. Ugh. (you see, this is where you start pretending like you're a party girl and then say “see daddy? You didn't think that things could get any worse. How's your reputation now?” But then again, I'm petty like that and I have little respect for pieces of shit parents like William.)

But she's in such an emotional state that she almost crashes into another car, but swerves at the last second and crashes into a tree instead. She gets out, a little banged up but okay... Her car... not so much. Jayden had followed her, and obviously pulls up behind her and gets out when she does. He calls a tow and then insists that she get into his car now. She then confronts him about if he'd told Caroline about her pregnancy, but he says no, why would you think that? Because she looked so vindictive about the paper earlier. Again, Angela refuses to get into the car with him (stupid VIP). Jayden asks if she's seriously going to just stand by the side of the road. He then says that he usually doesn't act like this, picks her up like the petulant child she is and puts her into his car. She even starts screaming and flailing at him like a child who missed nap time. JFC woman, act your age.

Jayden drops Angela off at her house. She goes upstairs to knock on William's office door, but he refuses to see her. Amelia tells her to bugger off. She goes to her room, where she thinks about how the papers could have access to her medical files like that, so she calls Ashton to help her, which he promises to do. He says that he loves her, but she seems to think that it's like in a BFF sort of way, and easily says it back. IS HE A DATABLE OR ISN'T HE?!
