Studio Art Capstone: Mapping Memory

Mapping Memory is a series that explores different realms of memories that have greatly influenced me through the remaining fragments of my faded recollections. These recollections consist of meaningful objects, texts, figures, and both written and spoken words. By physically layering and mapping out these mementos on a surface together, I aim to illustrate their collective meaning and explore the ways in which objects in particular can hold narratives in association with our memories.

I wish I could tell you that these were relatives of mine having a whooping good time at a county fair. Instead it is an awesome found-photograph that I enlarged and made an image-transfer onto watercolor paper. I used repurposed wax paper from address labels as a base for the “lift” from an ink-jet printer. I really like the possibilities that can come along with image transfers with a better understanding of the process. I after these first two samples, I didn't realize how many times I would have to go back in remove more and more paper. I ended up going back in about 3 times each to get it to where it is now, however I do think that each of them need one more round of water. It is a tedious process, but I would really like to explore with colored photos and/or adding other things such as embroidery, or direct application to manupulate the black and white photos.

her methods, materials, and stylistic influences, Akunyili Crosby shows a deep awareness of contemporary artists from Robert Rauschenberg to Kerry James Marshall, while her visual vocabularies suffuse intimate domestic scenes with the products and riotous patterns of her African homeland. Akunyili Crosby produces large-scale drawings and paintings, frequently of interiors that suggest familiar narratives but retain elements of mystery and ambiguity. These scenes are often directly inspired by the artist’s own experiences and memories, and are populated by her family members, friends, and people she has met or recalls from back home.

I particularly enjoy Crosbys use of photo transfers hidden and blended into patterns in her paintings. She makes deliberate and complex use of transfer prints, using a mineral-based solvent to transfer photocopied images from newspapers and product catalogues, magazines and books, onto the support. (Rauschenberg used this technique to great effect in his work starting in the late 1950s.) Akunyili Crosby layers these transfers, creating dense patterns that may move from a figure to parts of a piece of furniture, a background wall, a carpet, or an architectural element, creating an atmosphere of tension and instability. The transferred images are drawn from a wide variety of sources, ranging from colonial-era portraiture through recent popular culture to the intricately detailed Dutch wax-print fabrics produced by the Dutch manufacturer Vlisco for the African market, and they often directly reference Nigerian and African-diaspora culture.

I consider myself an average tech savvy person living in the 21st century and consider my cables frenemies; during the pandemic apparently many people had to learn that wireless LAN is perhaps not the best choice for performance-heavy tasks. But, putting a cable to a computer? Just to make it work? Gosh. Never. Anyway, in this piece I tried image transfer techniques - which were new to me and will probably solve quite a few of my problems when wanting texture in traditional media - and the resulting surface was a nice background for an AI generated portrait I whipped up. ROUND8: Brand-Bidding, creative commons, Bild- und Fotorecht, Shitstorms

Im achten Teil der Vorlesungsreihe steht die Marke und ihre Funktion im Mittelpunkt. Außerdem betrachten wir Shitstorms, deren Ausmaß und die adäquate Reaktion auf jene.

Da es sich bei einer Marke um ein werthaltiges Wirtschaftsgut handelt, kann es zu Markenverstößen kommen, sofern eine Verwechslungsgefahr besteht oder diese ganz bewusst zum Imagetransfer provoziert wird.

So liegt z.B. eine Verletzung der Herkunftsfunktion der Marke vor, wenn der Eindruck beim Nutzer geweckt wird, dass Angebot und Markeninhaber in Verbindung stehen. Maßgeblich hierfür ist der Text und die Aufmachung der Anzeigen und die gekennzeichnete Unabhängigkeit vom Markeninhaber. In der Vorlesung schauten wir uns verschiedene Beispiele, sowie die resultierende Wahrscheinlichkeit mit juristische Folgen in Form von Abmahnungen und Klageverfahren rechnen zu müssen, an.

Brand Bidding

Beim Brand Bidding bieten Unternehmen oder Affiliates bei einem Suchmaschinenbetreiber gezielt auf bestimmte Keywords der eigenen Marke und/oder der eines Konkurrenten, so dass seine Anzeige neben den Suchergebnissen erscheint. Ziel ist es, den Traffic der fremden Marken, für sich zu gewinnen.
