Its almost 1AM I have a interview with Wendy’s at 10:30AM so im gonna talk about my random HWS Japan headcanons until I pass out

He need reading glasses, I know we see him in the show/manga wearing them and like he may like actually need them and just uses contacts but in my mind they are only for reading. His eyes aren’t what they used to be and he needs his little nerd glasses

He likes making those bento box cooking videos, he makes them for himself and his friends/partners. He finds a lot of ways to pass the time and this is one of many. He likes making the character bentos the most, they make him smile

Gardening. Imagine walking into his backyard and seeing him on his knees tending to his strawberries and radishes just LOOK AT HIMMM!! Not only does it save him money but also makes him feel accomplished when he gets a good harvest

He typically likes doing a lot of those DIY projects, making little shelves and furniture and god knows what. He goes online and sees what new project he can make today to keep himself busy

He is actively greying and has been dying his hair for AGES. He plucks out greying eyebrow hair and stubble and dyes his hair. If someone points out a grey hair he gaslights them into thinking its just the lighting or they’re imagining things. If anyone found out he dyed his hair you wouldn’t see them the next day /j

He tried to grow a mustache in his youth but it looked so bad he repressed the memories of it deep DEEP into his mind you will never find them man. He found old paintings of his mustache and couldn’t bare to witness them anymore he buried them in his basement never to be seen again

He actively works out, he takes a 5 mile jog every morning and evening and does some biking and swimming every other day. He likes to stay fit even though he really doesn’t have to anymore. He just likes to keep his body toned. He also likes the cringe 1980’s American workout videos. He got a VHS set from America on his birthday and felt that he basically called him fat but no America just needed to get rid of them so just regifted them to him. He ended up liking them though so ig it worked out in the end

As well practices his swordsmanship, like dude we are in the modern day you do not need to know how to use a katana anymore but he does it anyway cause what if someone breaks in man you never know man una nunca sabè

Its right next to him every night and he is FAST, he even hears the slightest sound he jumps up and gets ready to slice you in half

Him and Prussia and very good friends (or maybe more idk am i pushing my PruPan agenda? YES) and he keeps a empty room for him when he decides to crash at Japan’s place for the 5th time this year. He doesn’t mind him he is very tidy and always repays the favor somehow. They like to go out for lunch and do all of the above together. They like to exchange snacks like chips and drinks.

He almost sliced Prussia in half when he crept into his room to ask him for smth when he was asleep, he only chopped off a lock of his hair and nicked his nose but nothing serious. He profusely apologized for it after and Prussia was a little shocked for a but but laughed it off and was okay. He was a but sad about the hair but it’ll grow back. Prussia knocks loud as hell now if he wants Japan for smth and he’s asleep

He keeps little historical knick knacks around his house that he should probably donate but doesn’t cause “They’re still good to use!!” Even though its a thousand year old pot that should be a health hazard. He has been wearing the same damn yukata for almost 2 centuries now cause he only wears it once every other summer summer when he finds his buried in his storage and the local museums beg to have it but he’s too attached to it to let go

He wheels around Pochi in a stroller sometimes when he feels a little silly. He loves dressing Pochi up with bows and ties and bandannas and god knows what else. That dog has been out in so many outfits bro cant catch a break

If he were human he would either pursue photography full time, his dream would be to get his photos on build boards and magazine covers. Maybe he’d be a field photographer too, go out into nature and stuff

He already does photography as a hobby but could never really do it full time cause ya know country duties

I just went to see barbie and oppenheimer together in theaters and I have a lot of thoughts on both

NOTE: as far as oppenheimer goes I just wanna make the disclaimer that when I refer to oppenheimer, im referring to the character. I'm very well aware that nolan depicted him in a favorable light (even if the framing of the movie would lead you to believe otherwise). LISTEN to survivors of nuclear fallout (particularly the indigenous people of new mexico who were affected most by irl!oppenheimer's testing) and understand that not everyone is going to love what appears to be the glorifying of a man who made the atomic bomb possible. I tried to differentiate for film commentary purposes the vast difference between oppenheimer the horrifying historical figure and oppenheimer the sad little conflicted pretty man okay? okay, lets get this show on the road.

THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR BOTH FILMS

I went to see barbie first, because in my mind, it was a strategic decision — did I want to be underwhelmed after a three hour film filled with bomb-y sfx? no, not really. so I went to see it before oppenheimer just so both films could have their intended effects.

I was not prepared for barbie to be as visceral as it was. greta gerwig is a GENIUS with the way she directed this film. in particular, my favorite parts were:

- weird barbie knowing everything because she has, quite literally, been through the most

- ken thinking the patriarchy wasn't just about male dominated society, but rather male-on-a-horse dominated society

- THEY HAD A PREGNANT BARBIE! THEY HAD A WHEELCHAIR BARBIE! THEY HAD SO MANY DIFFERENT BARBIES AND THEY WEREN'T SHY ABOUT IT <3

- og!barbie calling an old woman beautiful the first time she ever calls a human being beautiful just means so much to me

- ALLAN!!!! ALLAN NEEDS HIS OWN MOVIE HE'S MY SPECIAL LITTLE GUY!!!!

- the unexpected fourth wall breaks were quite funny and very well paced, and added a layer of realism to the film that I was not at all prepared for

I don't think there's a single wrong thing I can think of with this film. I sincerely hope it receives multiple awards and I sincerely believe it will! this is a movie for the girls and the girl understanders and if you are either, go see it ASAP!

after barbie, I went to see oppenheimer. I too, was not prepared for this film. I already knew from the internets review of christopher nolan that, as a woman at least, I'd have my reservations about whether or not it passed the bechtel test. it did not, but the thing that surprised me most was that I didn't mind that aspect.

I watched a man consumed by his work and his morals and their conflict with one another play out in such an intense marriage of science, politics, etc. and I watched the results of it, how his life was torn to pieces by the american government, colleagues, and the people most affected by his work (this last one is in more of the abstract sense because of course nolan would never outright give a voice to them, way to go ig).

and then, I realized I watched a film that truly depicted a main character I could sympathize with at some points, but never fully empathize with if I ever met the man (the real oppenheimer, not murphy's oppie). this is a main character you don't leave the theater loving or hating. his life, his work, his conflicts in both, do not paint him in any type of way — he does all of that himself, and I think those who left the movie understanding or even liking oppenheimer as a historical figure missed several points of the film that would try and dissuade that conclusion.

these were my favorite parts of the film:

- seeing glimpses of kitty oppenheimer and understanding, just from those glimpses, that she is the backbone of her marriage to robert. there isn't a single moment (except maybe how she got together with him in the first place) that I disagreed with

- now I know how heavily talked about the florence pugh scenes were and I do disagree with how the metaphor of robert "confessing his sins" of infidelity were played out in the manner they were. I am glad that his vices weren't shied away from. we were given everything about him, the good and the bad and the horrifying

- the imagery of how oppie's mind was thinking and processing the physics and the theories of the atom, the overlaying of the sound affects of applause, train tracks, a bomb detonating. from an artistic standpoint this is just *chefs kiss*

- the moment he understood the magnitude of his work, even in just glimpses, and how that left him in such a state after being applauded for the central work that helped to kill tens of thousands of people across the world. the vast difference between his reaction to it and the president of the united states demeaning him for having emotions about it

overall, I'm just glad that I wasn't watching cillian murphy portraying a fictionalized historical figure. he embodied the role in such a way that I wasn't watching the man oppenheimer (from history) nor was I watching cillian murphy. they'd become inseparable in my mind by the time the film was over, creating some not so secret third oppie that wasn't a person pulled from time nor was he just a character.

overall, if you're looking for a film you can sit through and leave unscathed, I would not recommend this one. it will stay with you. and it will make you uncomfortable. and if it does, then it worked.

I will also be quite shocked if this one doesn't receive any awards.

now, let's talk about barbenheimer as a unit because it's a metric FUCKTON of the dichotomy of being human and that is beautiful, just BEAUTIFUL to me. where barbie illustrates the beauty and positive meaning you can make of your life, oppenheimer illustrated the horror and ransacking you can make of your life. seeing these two one after the other will have you both loving and hating yourself, and either way, maybe you're right!

here's the difference between them that I loved best though.

at least for me, barbie is a mirror. it's a mirror into womanhood, into the inherent ordeal that is existing, and how you can make the best of it an embrace every part of yourself, even the parts that are confusing. and then you get oppenheimer, and if barbie is a mirror, oppenheimer is a window. it's a window into the horrific parts of discovery, into the terrifying parts of being human that are terrible to look at in oneself, it's a window into how someone makes the worst version of himself, and how it comes back to haunt him. but oppenheimer CAN be a mirror, too, for that matter.

seeing these back to back was not a mistake by any means, and if you're planning on sitting through five hours of film anytime in the near future, make it these two. I'm so very serious about that

I don’t know anything about the origins or dynamic or anything …. Tried looking it up and found a variety of arguments that don’t all work with each other so idk which one you agree with. Most likely the idea of “breeding out” racialized people into being white, due to passing? Which yeah is horrific. I just want to know is there any room for a discussion of passing with race? Because i mean it just plain facts does happen. Obviously passing isn’t being. Just because someone in one context passes for white doesn’t mean that person passes in all contexts, and also doesn’t make that person white. Not necessarily legally, not necessarily in how that person was treated or the context they lived in (their family history still had people who didn’t pass, which has affects) and doesn’t at all mean that person can’t be self aware of not being white, or engage in the culture of the racialized ethnic groups they descend from. Ig im wondering if in a reasonable context the term could be useful even if it’s abused elsewhere.

Let's start by saying that colorism is terrible, and I think we all can agree upon that. The people who go around with the whole "bettering the race" or "breeding out x" ofter either 1. Fetishize certain races 2. Have a HUGE race guilt/inferiority complex that forces them to reject and discriminate their own race and even degrade themselves.

The only way that I, personally, as a non-american biracial person, only use that term is to describe someone, period. Other uses of the same term are often used (redundantly) to decimate and demean people who don't look "POC enough" (a.k.a: they ain't stereotypical-looking enough) either they be biracial or monoracial.

I mean.. if you pass, you pass, nothing to do, its genetics, we simply CAN'T blame people over something they have no control or choice.

Hell! l've had people implying that I'm not fully biracial since latinos tend to be very mixed (because somehow to these race obsessed freaks US blacks and whites are "purer" and therefore more "real" than non-US ones and I can't see how that's nazi rhetoric at all! /j) and that's not only me, I've seen others being reduced to that dumbass term.

Also, not to mention the tiny little detail that this term is largely USELESS outside of the US (so please, try not to use it outside of a US context...)

Leaving that aside, thank you for showing legit curiosity over my thoughts on these terms instead of using it as a "gotcha" or being just outright malicious. Is honestly a very refreshing sight.

so her full name, according to rick, is: reyna avila ramirez-arellano. right off the bat, my first issue with it is that she has three surnames. even for hispanic kids, there should only be one. i’ve actually read posts were they say that ávila is her middle name, but it doesn’t make sense because that’s a common surname?(another issue is the spelling; it would be ávila, not avila. that’s not how it’s spelled lol, because the accent changes pronunciation...but that’s another topic if ur into spanish grammar. im just being nit-picky ig). so making “ávila” part of her name either means that rick thought that that was a suitable middle name (??) or he just wanted to make reyna have those moments were the character goes, “i’m latina and have the loooongest surname ever✨ did i mention i’m latina?”

if he’d actually done some research, he would’ve realized that:

 for latine ppl, three surnames is not common.

 if someone does have three surnames (i do), one of them is hyphenated like reyna’s is (like mine is as well). but it’s usually short. it also means that the hyphenated surname counts as one. so for example, ramirez-arellano is technically just one surname. but it still doesn’t make sense. nothing about her name does. which leads me to número tres.

reyna wouldn’t even have two surnames in the first place. she’s a demigod. i don’t think the roman goddess bellona has a surname lmao. at least, not a legal one that could make it to reyna’s birth certificate. unless bellona used the mist?? but if rick knew what he was doing, it would’ve been specified—and anyway, her father didn’t marry bellona; it makes no sense that reyna would have two surnames. 

okay, so if you don’t know what i'm talking about with the last part, i'll quickly explain. the reason as to why why latin americans (and spaniards) have two surnames instead of one is because traditionally, when a woman gets married, she doesn’t change her surname. instead, when the family has kids, she’ll pass on her surname to her children. usually, the paternal surname is the one that goes first, and then the mother’s. the combination of both parents’ names represents a unity between the two legal families. in the case of reyna, however, no such union happened. bellona left and that was that. so why does reyna have, not one, but three different names? because rick wanted to add on the stereotype of long ass names lmao.

it’s just a mess. the hyphenated ramirez-arellano would mean that at some point her father’s family decided to merge in two different family names? when it could’ve just been ramirez de arellano? where did that name come from, anyway? why did he add in ávila, for that matter? because reyna fits nicely as a ramirez; there’s no need for that ávila. ngl i prefer that she be named ramirez than ávila lol. but anyway, that’s just my opinion.

the point is that it makes no sense and was just a way for her to sound edgy and like the “maría josefina de las rosas ximenez” type of stereotypical latina shit that is made fun of in western media. leo didn’t get this treatment, which means rick understood the basics of matrimony and why, when there’s no father in the picture, the kid gets the mother’s surname. lol. so why did he do this to reyna? i want to scream because fdkjghdkjf she canonically hates her surname as well. please ricardo!!! the least you could’ve done at this point was make her proud of her name and culture! this mess could’ve worked out if, one way or another, reyna explained the reasons behind her surnames. did her father want to pass on his mother’s surname to his daughters?

Idk if Im phrasing this in a way that makes sense but I feel like part of what makes some of the discussions around 'asian-coded' characters so weird/difficult is that RT is an american company. Because like, in anime, I feel like it doesnt really matter if a character has no 'japanese looking' clothes and fuckin red hair and green eyes because the characters name is japanese, they live in japan (or some fantastical japan-equivalent ig) and were designed and written by japanese people. But if an american company did all of that and tried to pass it off as like 'asian rep' it would come across as weird or cheap bc you just need tl be more explicit w/ how you design/code those characters, if that makes sense

i think it’s comparable to the way that we accept queer rep from queer people as opposed to cishet creators because we know that they have a personal investment in this. japanese people playing with their own culture & not following the “typical look” is completely different to an american company claiming representation while giving even less than the bare minimum compared to the main market.

it’s the same way that rwby’s queer representation falls flat because of the lack of any genuine effort put into it, alongside the fact that there is more authentic representation by actual queer people that is just being left behind to lift up cishet creators.

Kingsman the secret service, first draft liveblog.

I’m reading the original draft for Kingsman: The secret service and being just blown away by how different but the same™ it is so I’m gonna list some things that made me go :0 

Huntsman and sons doesn’t really sound like a spy org. it sounds like a rustic b&b in the scottish countryside. Not a bad thing but Kingsman does sound a bit more “knightly” and “cool” 

Also Jack Lincoln is just not it. Harry Hart is where it’s at. 

SO about the ages: In this script Eggsy is 21, Harry is 49, Merlin is middleaged (I’m assuming that means like 44-45 ish), Roxy is 22, Charlie 23, Lancelot 39. 

Merlin was supposed to be “black, handsome” And frankly my first thought was “....Idris Elba?” lmao 

The medal Eggsy gets is called a Guinevere Cross and I immediately came up with a whole scenario of how the first Guinevere sacrificed themself in an act of bravery, which is why the Kingsman medal of honor is named after them. 

Lancelot was supposed to fight Gazelle before losing but ig getting cut in half from behind has more shock value. (Just give my boy a bit more screentime) 

I’m glad they changed Michelle’s whole approach to Daisy, cause in this script it comes across like she couldn’t care less about her literal toddler, which makes her kind of unlikeable :// I’m glad they didn’t do Michelle dirty like that in the final script. 

Arthur really was just a sexist, elitist bastard now wasn’t he (while looking at the candidates his reaction to Eggsy being proposed is “at least it’s not a woman, I mean wtf are all these women doing here??” .....There’s three women being proposed out of twelve candidates, Chester.)

On that note, I’m glad they ended up giving Merlin more of Arthur’s lines - mostly because it makes sense for Merlin’s character to play the part of handler besides being the tech wizard he is- but also Make! Arthur! Say! Less!

I think it’s an interesting choice to have the candidates be from all over the world, as I Imagine the agents who were abroad just chose the best person they could find from that area, and if that’s true then the other agents were away in: France, Germany, Denmark, Japan, Italy, Ethiopia, South Africa, India, Persia and America. Do what you want with that info.

I’m glad they acknowledge the lack of privacy in the first dorm set up, because I always looked at that in the movie and thought “If I had to use a bathroom out in the open with eleven peers just hanging out behind me, I would simply not use the bathroom lol” 

Glad they cut the whole subplot of Harry infiltrating some bank, especially because it involved dressing up as a woman to get acces to the ladies room, which, given the current climate and the whole jkr situation would not have gone down well, to say the least. 

“That sounds exhausting” in which Harry is me. 

"Training starts tomorrow, which I will have nothing to do with. Watching people train is boring.” Spoken boldly for a guy who then subsequently shows up at every. single. training scene, Merlin. 

God I’m glad they cut the whole puppy obstacle course scene, it was just alot lol 

A lot of stuff is the same but what really stands out to me is how little Eggsy actually does on his own, in this version he only passes tests through dumb luck or because Harry straight up gives him the answers, which makes it difficult to root for him in this script. So I’m glad they changed that. 

Idk what to think about the implanted chip being a bluetooth earpiece originally, like who wears an earpiece all the time?..... Ig the writers thought the same thing in the end lol

I like that Elton John is just fully in this movie, what exactly is it about Elton John that made Matthew and Jane continue to write him into both movies??? IS HE GOING TO BE IN THE BLUE BLOOD TOO? :0

The way that they really wrote a whole Heathers the musical “shut up, Heather!” scene but with Arthur, Harry and Merlin saying “shut up, Eggsy!” I CAN’T WITH THIS SCRIPT

Okay so in a cut test, there’s a mentioning of Huntsmen security, which I will take as proof for my whole “The entire plot of TGC is bullshit because there had to be more staff at Kingsman than just Merlin, meaning more survivors of the bombing” 

AND THE PLOT THICKENS WITH THIS: Harry (to Eggsy): “Look, I’ll be back in a few days. Stay here ‘till then. I’ll call Merlin, and when everything’s calmed down I’ll take you in and finesse things. If we’re lucky we can get you a job in admin or train you as a pilot.” HELLOO WHERE WERE THE ADMINS AND PILOTS AND SECURITY IN TGC 

“Thank you. I’ll do anything. I’ll be a cleaner, even.” THEY HAVE CLEANERS TOO MATTHEW YOU’RE KIDDING ME

The ending is so different omg What is Happening? why is Usain Bolt, Lady Gaga, Jamie Oliver and Elton John fighting together avengers style? 

All in all: I much prefer the way they handled things in the final script because this felt a bit too much like the types of movies you write with your friends in middleschool for shits and giggles and less like an actual film you’d go see in theatres. But of course it’s important to remember that this mess led to one of my favorite films ever, and I really enjoyed the insight into the process and changes that led the writers to the final version. T’was very cool. 

Also I read the novelization of The Golden Circle and I can’t say which one I get the biggest yikes from (yes I can it’s the novel. It’s so bad lol)
