i'm actually strongly considering writing a THV draft this summer bc i have most of a plot now, but this is forcing me to think of all the little basics that i've put off bc they're not fun, such as: who's taking care of wren while their mom's in jail? wren is only 16, so obviously they need a legal guardian, and it can't be loren this time bc he's too busy being a single father and the backbone of the villain community.

this just sucks bc most of my characters are really well developed by now, so whenever i need to come up with a new one to fulfill a purpose in the plot, it feels like i'm just shoving a cardboard cutout into the story and hoping they become a real person. and half the time they don't, bc i don't find them compelling enough to actually develop them.

OOHOHO GARAK AS CASTELLAN....

I think his time in the Federation has, despite his best efforts, affected his outlook on politics. He's a wary centrist now, as if Cardassia has the luxury of political discourse not related to basic sustenance.... trying to delicately excise the most distasteful parts of the prior totalitarian regime while still supporting the structures that keep people alive.

I don't think there's a way to be a well-liked leader after an annihilative disaster, honestly. Garak's not an exception. He's NOT a popular Castellan, but he WAS the least bad choice immediately on hand, and he's adept at securing badly needed aid from Federated interests. He can be very persuasive and diplomatic, and he circumvents or cuts through the bureaucratic and political obstacles that would've trapped less canny men. He's in power during the setting of the foundation of the Cardassian economic miracle and he stalwartly weathers years of vicious criticism and assassination attempts (that he easily evades). As soon as he retires his approval rating goes from like 15% to 80%. He's the Grandfather of Cardassia, their mercurial constant, their deviously bitchy figurehead who can hold his own against any rival leader. The wily old regnar who raised a generation of hungry utopian statesmen. A Castellan to be privately eviscerated and publicly saluted.

Mostly he's just trying to go home at some point during the night to quietly whisper 'good-night' to his kids and husband, though

i didn't wanna ramble too much off topic in that last post but shout out to tanaka for doing so much to integrate the first years into the team.

Like, it's not just the way he takes hinata under his wing or how he decides to help kagehina within minutes of meeting them, it's also how he's arguably the primary factor in showing kageyama how to be friends with his teammates via leading by example ie verbal encouragements and high fives and being supportive even outside the club like when he gets saeko to drive kageyama and hinata to the camp. it's how he goes out of his way to include tsukki in the team's celebrations and rituals and moments even when tsukki is actively trying not to. It's how he embodies team spirit and loyalty and how he shows them both how to be a great senpai and he in turn is a wonderful kohai to daichi and suga and asahi.

He's always so willing to stand up for everyone too, whether it's other teams bashing Karasuno or if he thinks his own team members are being disrespectful towards each other (that scene when he starts scolding tsukki for not being supportive enough of yamaguchi-or when he's ready to murder kageyama on noya's behalf), he's just the absolute best and i love him.
