presence // aventurine
he'll never outrightly ask you what it is, not at the outset.
he might find you curled on the couch, quiet, trying to breathe out the something in your chest that writhes and constricts, or in tears, but he won't ask, only sit quietly with you, lean against you, the weight of him enough to reassure you of his presence. maybe you reach for him, curl into the hollow of his body, and he'll let you, hold you until the tears stop, or you can feel your hands again, or you fall asleep, to the steady rhythm of his heart.
you'll wake, or look at him, and he'll speak, then, maybe look back at you with those iridescent eyes that you love, as he asks, softly, if you're feeling better, if you want to talk about it.
he'll keep you company, either way, listening. there is a steadiness in the weight of his arms around you, in the even beat of his heart against your back. you'll have to move, eventually, one of your legs falling asleep under you, and you'll both laugh, and shift. he gently disentangles himself from you, to get you something to drink. you settle back down, curled around each other, talk quietly until the sunlight changes.

Alright everyone, buckle up and sit down. I was talking with @nerdasaurus1200 on another post and came to the conclusion that I need to write Sera meta so let's freaking GO
Tumblr media
I'm mostly gonna be talking about Sera, what we know about her so far, and what makes her tick (aka her fears) and why she's not a bitch/asshole the way apparently so many people like to portray her? (I've mostly just been hanging out with fan art and headcanons specifically about Lucifer in the fandom so I haven't seen these specifically, but someone approached me about how they liked m portrayal of Sera in my fic which was NOT that of an asshole and apparently multiple people are portraying her that way? Idk I haven't seen any but uh yeah let's talk SERA)
Characters are always the most important part of a story, and even if they're not a main character and/or the audience nor the writer know what they want/need, the writer at the very least needs to know How and Why a character makes decisions, instead of just "oh they're an asshole" So let's do that for Sera. Why is she making the decisions she's making? LETS GO
Let's start off by talking about what we know about Sera
She's at least as old as Lucifer, she was there for the creation of earth given the appearance of her silhouette in Charlie's exposition
Tumblr media
We know that the exterminations might have been Adam's idea, but it was HER decision to approve them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know that she's FOR SURE older than Emily
Tumblr media
and the other thing we know for sure about her is that she is the High Seraphim (we don't know WHAT that means exactly but clearly it is a position of authority and rule)
Tumblr media
So those are the things we know for sure:
She's about as old as Lucifer
She approved the exterminations
She's older than Emily
and she's the high Seraphim
Now I'm going to circle back to all of these points but I want to start off with her relationship with Lucifer
Unfortunately for all of us, the only thing we can say about their relationship with 100% certainty is that they for SURE know each other, either because they were essentially "coworkers" in the past, or because they're both the respective rulers of their realms (even if Sera has some people above her) and they're implied to interact with each other
(at the very least you cannot convince me otherwise that they don't interact. Someone had to have talked to Lucifer about the exterminations for him to have had "approved it" and we know it wasn't Adam because Lucifer hadn't seen Adam since he fell to hell until the finale, and we know that Sera was not only the one to approve said exterminations but also decreed that no one else in heaven know about them. She clearly must have spoken to Lucifer about it because there's nobody else left who had the authority to do that AND knew about them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So at the very least in present day Sera and Lucifer have some sort of professional relationship as leaders. And I'll come back to this because it's implied that this relationship isn't a very good one, but first let's talk about the past
full stop, we have NO IDEA what sort of relationship Sera and Lucifer might have had when he was still in heaven. But here's the thing, even if their relation was strictly "yeah I know them cuz I work with them, but that's as far as it goes" Lucifer's fall STILL would have been horrifying for Sera to witness. He was the same rank as her, probably no other angel except the elders likely ranked higher, and they still banished him. Charlie's storybook leaves it at that, but Lucifer implies it was violent in his debut episode.
Tumblr media
trauma is a funny thing when you think about it, you're just as likely to develop trauma by watching someone else be assaulted as you are for you to have been assaulted. And Sera was there, she likely saw the whole thing happen. So not only did Sera watch how brutal the elders could be to someone who questioned and disobeyed the order, but the fact that it was done to LUCIFER someone of equal rank and authority as her means that absolutely NOBODY is safe from the elders
and this is without taking into account that on some level, she and Lucifer had to have been close. There are no other seraphim in heaven besides her, the elders (who appear to be rather hands off and uninvolved) and Emily. Emily was likely created as a replacement for Lucifer, so at the time, it was basically just her and Lucifer as the only seraphim up there. They not only worked closely together, they likely had a close bond as well. Now I have my own head canon preferences as to what kind of bond, BUT let's ignore that and look at 3 options (although there are likely more, but huuu this post is gonna be long already so let's not push it yeah? )
option 1: equal peers. You are Sera and you've known Lucifer all your life. You two have "grown up" together, learned about the world and your powers together. You're comrades in arms! You know all of each other's secrets! You lean on each other for support as you lead heaven together. You work together all the time. Sure, he can be a little excitable at times but it's so much FUN right? This guy could be your bestie/brother. And you sit back and watch as the only ones with more authority than you, skewer him and banish him to hell for having questioned the order and now there's a metaphorical spear against your back at all times because you know it could have been you instead, and it could still be you if you don't behave
Option 2: Lucifer is your mentor. He's taught you everything you know. The ropes, your powers, the world. He's fantastic! You admire him greatly. He has such energy you could never hope to match. You put him on a pedestal, and in one fell swoop the only people he answers to destroy your mentor in front of you. You are now alone, without any more advice or guidance other than a warning to not step out of line as your mentor once did
Option 3: Lucifer is your apprentice. He's adorable! A little over enthusiastic but who doesn't love someone who's passionate about the things they like? He brings a wonderful energy and vibe, and... he's your responsibility. You try to reign in his wild energy only for the elders to step in and banish him because you failed him and now you know that the elders could do that to you too
So, I'll be honest, option 3 is NOT the one I'm biased towards, but if it ends up being that one, it would make Sera's behavior towards Emily extra heartbreaking. She already failed one apprentice, she will not fail another one, right?
Either way, Sera is terrified of going against the elders because of what they did to Lucifer in spite of his rank. She knows first hand how harsh they can be and because of that, she will do everything in her power to make sure nobody around her falls into the same fate. No one will ever question the elders again, and she will lie and withhold information to make sure that happens
And we're just talking about the INITIAL banishment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now why would Sera bring this up, unless what she was most afraid of wasn't even the initial banishment, but of the suffering she clearly knows comes afterwards? And why would she care or even know about the suffering? Well, if it's true that she and Lucifer were close, then regardless if she was spying on him or not the way we know heaven can do, she still watched a cute enthusiastic little angel go from this:
Tumblr media
to this
Tumblr media
all because because he suffered.
She watched him question, get banished, suffer, and change into someone she didn't recognize, in real time. And the worst part is, she's not only scared of what happened TO him, she's personally scared OF him and what he's become. He might be fallen, but he's still a powerful angel
And this segways into another bullet: she approved the exterminations, but WHY
Charlie's intro implies it was as some sort of punishment towards Lilith who was rallying the demons and they felt threatened
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But clearly there's more to this
So first thing I'd like to point out, Sera doesn't look happy about this decision. She mentions as much in the song "You didn't Know" when she outright tells Emily "It was such a hard decision" and earlier in the same episode she outright tells Adam she wouldn't have approved of this if she had known it'd make things "worse"
But this is incomplete. Something doesn't make sense. Sera clearly meets with Lucifer for certain matters as previously established, and Lucifer, in spite of his initial trauma "NO CHARLIE DO NOT TALK TO HEAVEN" knee jerk reaction, never doubted that he COULD in fact get her a meeting with heaven. He outright tells her at the end of episode 5
Tumblr media
He never says, "I'll try to get the meeting". He says straight up, I can do this. There isn't a doubt in his mind that he can get this meeting. He knows Sera will meet with him/take his call (idk how he contacts heaven) and will agree to the meeting. We don't really know WHY Sera agreed to this if she thought it was a bad idea and never really intended to entertain the idea to begin with, going as far as to tell Adam to rig the results and calling Charlie misguided. So what's up? Why on earth would she agree to it? Well...?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sera is scared of the demons of hell, hence why she approved the exterminations, but she's even MORE scared of Lucifer and folded to his request. (or idk maybe there's more going on here and she feels guilt about what happened to him so she folds to him sometimes idk, but for the sake of this meta, SHE'S SCARED OF HIM)
but here's what's kinda weird. Charlie's storybook only mentions LILITH'S involvement with the demons rising in power, not Lucifer. Sera later claims that they were uprising to Emily as the reason she's scared of them and that it's her job to keep everyone safe.
Tumblr media
Clearly SOMETHING happened between the creation of Hell and the exterminations being approved that involved BOTH the sinners AND Lucifer that made Sera scared of both. Sera doesn't seem the type to fear without reason. She fears questioning the order because that incurs the elders' wrath. She fears the elders because of what they did to Lucifer. She fears angels falling because she saw how much it hurt Lucifer. Sera is not the type to fear randomly. Clearly there is some sort of thing that happened that made it clear to Sera that Lucifer is to be feared enough to fold to his requests and that the sinners are dangerous enough that it justifies genocide.
And now to bring back the whole Sera is older than Emily. Emily didn't know this otherwise Sera wouldn't have needed to tell her. AKA Emily wasn't even around when said conflict happened. Sera not only had to go through something that clearly traumatized her to the point where she agreed that genocide was a reasonable response, but she had to go through that ALONE. Trauma is hard enough to deal with, but to have to navigate it alone really gives it some steroids it has no business in having
This genuinely makes me wonder how long the exterminations have to have been taking place. It probably took a WHILE for hell to gather up enough numbers that they started making buildings by the look of Charlie's storybook, AND THEN did something against heaven, so this was not happening from day one of hell, far from it. And this also makes me wonder how old exactly is Emily? She strikes me as extremely young
season 2 come out please, I'm working from CRUMBS here, there is so much we don't know
But yeah, all of this to say, Sera isn't just some alpha bitch who's prejudiced against demons (not to say there isn't bias there, there ABSOLUTELY is, ugh) but at her core, she's a leader who underwent a lot of trauma and she's full of fear and she makes decisions, rational, moral or not, based off of that fear. And yeah unfortunately, fear, especially trauma based fear, messes with us in ways we never would expect
a kind man may suddenly resort to violence. The confident argumentative person, may instead end up frozen. Someone who thought they valued their family all their life instead runs away. We may regret what we do in moments in fear, we might even logically know that we're making bad decisions, or decisions that go against our morals. Sera CLEARLY hates that she made the decision to approve extermination, but she holds onto it steadfast because it alleviates the fear
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, I don't particularly LIKE Sera. I dislike her microaggressions towards Charlie and her attempts to sabotage her efforts at the meeting by calling upon Adam. But as a writer, looking at the clues I got to say she's a very interesting character to me. She seems like a reasonable authority figure, but she's so full of trauma that she's letting her fear make all of her decisions for her

So I know a lot of people have an issue with the Ink Demon being able to speak, saying that "He never spoke in batim" and it was weird that they just added it. But I, for one, think that he could always talk.
I don't think he can talk with his actual mouth, though. He uses something similar telepathy, if that makes any sense. At least if you're connected to him through the Ink somehow. I'm pretty sure he could always do this, even in Ink Machine. Sure, he never spoke to Henry, but he never really needed to, is the thing.
Also, I for one like that they added a voice. He's basically a wild animal, but the fact he has a way to communicate also adds some domestication to him. It's kind of unsettling to think about. Almost like analog horror type stuff. Some monster in analog horror stories are monstrous beasts and animals, yet they can choose to communicate in ways that are so human and familiar if they want to.
And I mean- if you want to take the books into account, (I know Meatly said they're their own separate canon, but idc what he says, they're totally canon to me) in the latest book, tlo, one of the characters actually says that he can hear the Ink Demon in his head, and that he was laughing. And keep in mind, this is pre- Ink Machine and Dark revival, timeline wise. The Ink Demon hasn't even mutated or evolved yet. He's still in his Ink Machine form at this point.
I REST MY CASE YOU HONOR

2 – Bark
Tumblr media
wc. 1023 | Modern | Bookshop AU
It’s not that Ninira outright dislikes dogs, but when you are small and they are large they’re scary, sometimes.
Ninira checked her phone again despite having checked the location before leaving, and again while on route. The address was right, it hadn’t been that hard to find. The red brick townhome sat on a quaint street in an older part of the city, surrounded by similar homes of varying styles and lined with well matured trees.
But it wasn’t the possibility of having messed up the address and approaching the wrong home that really gave Ninira pause but a figure in the home’s front bay window. A dog and a large one at that. Garlean Shepard, she wasn’t well versed in dog breeds but knew enough to identify it as thar, or at least partly that. It watched her transfixed, snout pressed up against the glass so that even at a distance Ninira could make out the flash of white of its teeth. She swallowed. Had anyone told her Hilda had a dog? Perhaps, and she had forgotten? Or perhaps, and she’d simply imagined a smaller less terrifying breed.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t even wish for her house call to go unanswered, or to simply slip away unmissed. Hilda was expecting her. They were going to go over Nastond merch together to figure out what would be feasible for Ninira to sell in her store.
Steeling herself she started towards the house’s front steps. In the window the dog exploded into a fit of barking before tearing away from the window. The front door opened before she even reached the top step.
“Nini! You found the place alright?” Hilda gave her a cheery wave, voice raised slightly over the barking that came from immediately beside her. She was blocking the dog with her hip as she reached to open the screen door. “Mongrel, that’s enough, honestly.” To his credit the dog did quiet though he continued to try and nose his way past Hilda to the door. “Sorry he gets excited to greet guests.”
Ninira hesitated, eyes on the dog. Something Hilda clearly seemed to notice as she slipped one hand through his studded collar.
“You haven’t met Mongrel yet have you?”
Ninira shook her head.
Hilda smiled. “I promise you he’s a goofball and sweet as anything.” Still she backed up from the door a bit, Mongrel moving with her. “Sit.” She ordered and Mongrel obliged, tongue lolling from the side of his mouth as he panted.
“I’ve got him, if you want to come inside and say hello. But I can also put him out back first if you would rather not.”
Ninira would have preferred not, but she didn’t want to be rude, and didn’t want Hilda to think she hated her dog. She didn’t hate dogs… they just made her nervous, especially big ones like Mongrel who looked like they could bite off her hand and trample her with ease. Carefully she slipped in through the screen door, not wanting Mongrel to explode into a new fit of barking. But with Hilda’s hand at his collar he sat and simply watched as she entered though his tail thumped loudly against the floor betraying his excitement.
“Hello Mongrel.” Ninira managed and his tail thumped harder.
Hilda chuckled. “If you want to hold out your hand and let him sniff you, it will help him get to know you better.”
The mortifying thought of the beast taking her hand off in one bite flashed through her mind, but she tried to quell it. Now that he was no longer barking, Mongrel was perhaps slightly less scary. She still could hear the quiver in her voice as she asked, “you'll keep a hold on him?”
“I won’t let go, I promise.”
Ninira inched slowly down the hall, stopping what she felt was a far enough distance before holding out an open palm to Mongrel. He leaned his head close, sniffing. She could feel his hot wet breath and––he licked her. Ninira shrieked, from unexpected surprise over anything, lurching back. Her sudden movement and noise making Mongrel excitedly leap to his feet but Hilda held tight, “hey, sit!” The dog obliged, though Ninira had scrambled back until she hit the hallway wall and stood frozen against it.
“Sorry, Nini. Sorry!”
It was then that Lucia emerged from the doorway at the end of the hall, where the kitchen was just visible beyond, looking worried. “Hilda. Ninira! What’s going on? Is everything alright?”
Hilda looked to her, relieved. “Can you distract Mongrel, maybe take him out back? He’s just a bit too excited to meet Nini right now.”
Lucia nodded, “of course.” She vanished from the doorway, but reappeared quickly, a bag of dog treats in hand and gave it a little shake.
Mongrel’s head snapped around and Hilda released him just as he took off, charging down the hall, leaping excitedly as he reached Lucia. She laughed, holding the treat bag higher, earning a few more excited bounces from Mongrel as she retreated into the kitchen. “Come on then, outside if you want one of these.”
Hilda sighed and looked back at Ninira who still stood backed up against the wall. “I’m so sorry Nini. He’s still a bit of a puppy at heart but I promise he’s a big softy, he’d never intend to hurt you.”
Ninira nodded slowly. “It’s… It’s okay. I know. I just, he startled me, he licked me.”
Hilda chuckled. “Yeah, I should have warned you he probably would. I’m still so sorry you look so freaked out.”
“I’m… okay.” It was the truth, it had been briefly mortifying but it could have been worse, Ninira supposed. “Thank you for keeping a hold on him, and for understanding…”
Hilda smiled. “Of course, I know he looks more intimidating than he is. I hope maybe you can have more relaxed encounters with him in the future.” She moved to close the front door. “For now Lucia will keep him distracted and outside, and we’ll be upstairs in the office anyway.”
Ninira nodded again, releasing the death-like grip she hadn’t even noticed she had on her purse strap and stepping away from the wall so she could follow Hilda upstairs.

Mmm, been mentally rotating this AU some more -- the one where Shen Jiu comes back, yeah?
First thing that happens is Shen Jiu telling poor, baffled (and painfully hopeful) Yue Qingyuan that he WILL talk, but.... perhaps not while they’re still walking up the mountainside. He also doesn’t object when Yue Qingyuan grabs his wrist -- to verify a few things. Yue’s painfully hopeful, but not stupid. It’s true very, very few people would know to call him Qi-ge, but that doesn’t exclude the possibility that this person could be any number of malicious entities. Thankfully, that’s not the case.
When they’re in private, Shen Jiu is incredibly apprehensive. He’s been steeling himself for this encounter for several years now, but that doesn’t make it any easier or even particularly pleasant. First things first, they exchange information about the past twelve years. Frankly, Shen Jiu demands to know what the hell’s been happening here.
He is, uh, aware of “The Regret of Chunshan” and desperately WISHES he weren’t. Yue Qingyuan’s explanation does nothing to make him wish otherwise, but ultimately...... Shen Jiu determines that, whatever mess that imposter made of his reputation, so be it. That’s their shame now. Even if they hadn’t completely defiled it, he’s washed his hands of the name “Shen Qingqiu” and the wretched body that went with it.
This surprises Yue Qingyuan, but... so long as that’s what he wants...? Yet, before YQY can start trying to muddle through their own issues, Shen Jiu cuts him off--but not in the way he used to. He asks through gritted teeth if the abuse & humiliation he received at the Qiu household was his done by his hand. No? Then don’t take blame that isn’t yours. It’s tiring.
Shen Jiu is still very, very curt with him about these things. He still doesn’t want to talk about it, but realises that Yue Qingyuan will be damned annoying if he doesn’t address it now. And, besides he isn’t as angry anymore. He just wants it to be over, so he never has to touch the subject again. But they both need to move on for that to happen.
So, he tolerates Yue Qingyuan’s lil guilty song and dance as best he can; admittedly his tolerance isn’t great. But that he’s willing to listen at all is an improvement! Ultimately, I think, Shen Jiu tells him that if he wants his forgiveness, then Qi-ge* has to forgive himself first. What’s happened, happened. Shen Jiu has... come to terms, somewhat, with things and that he was not a good person. May still not be. Yet, he’d like to move forward.
And, to do that, he needs the sect leader’s support not his apologies. Shen Jiu would like to rejoin Cang Qiong mountain as a disciple. New body, new name. Rather, for the sake of formality & pretenses, he’d prefer if his past identity was kept between them and perhaps a few select others. He wants to start over.
Accepting this for the time being, Yue Qingyuan wants to be... a little selfish. If he may. He’s missed his shidi so much. Get hugged, maybe?? Stiffly, awkwardly. Get hugged.
*(Shen Jiu does, yes, still hate using their old names. Yet, he is aware of their effect)

the only thing stopping me from writing a fucking charlie slimecicle + elmariana + juanaflippa family centric time loop fic is the fact that i missed every single flippa stream live (finally plunged into qsmp a few days after tallulah appeared) and i don't have the time to watch back through the vods because HOLY SHIT CAN WE GET 30 FUCKING SECONDS WITHOUT SOMETHING HAPPENING ON THIS SERVER WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

ASKS hmmmmmmmm 5 / 8 / 20 ?
👀👀👀
I just need to say I love that these eye emojis are coming into my house sdkjnfjnkfknjf they're so big and for WHAT tumblr LOL! Saving 5 for the end so I can readmore the snippet!
8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?
kjndfsnjkdfsknjfsd literally the only things I'm weird about writing are smut ideas okay!!! and they're not even that weird it's me i'm the problem!!!!!!!!! So idk, the LiandrinxReader fic will probably be a nice challenge for me on that front, and who knows, maybe this is the year the Hawkedith light bondage fic sees the light of day. oh actually you know what for a non-smut idea I've always wanted to do a tropey time travel fic! but i think i would make myself insane LOL. maybe this will be the year!!!
20. Any plans to work on original fiction this year?
OHOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! It's honestly so hard to choose and prioritize what to work on!!! I have 2 big original ideas, both of which I have rambled at you about extensively LOL. I think I can make a good chunk of progress on the nano nonsense fic this year, since the style is pretty firmly in my wheelhouse and I have a pretty strong idea of the main plot through-line. We'll see how I'm feeling, but I think once I get a few of my lingering fanfic projects done I'll be ready to focus on my original things again! Month-long challenges like nano actually work really well for me when I can manage them, so I might try to do something like that eventually to make some significant progress!
5. Which WIP is first on your list to complete this year? Will you post a snippet?
Again, it's soooooo hard to choose and prioritize!!! Scorched earth is in general my top priority because I just don't want to drag it out too long--before the most recent time my schoolwork beat me to death w a stick I was under the delusion that I could have it almost finished by the new year LOL! But since it's fairly simple in structure and I have it pretty clearly planned out, I mostly write chapters in one or two sittings. Second priority is advancing/finishing ghost of you, since the next chapter is literally almost done, I just got too busy to work on it. But instead I shall offer youuuuu Liandrin x Reader nonsense! It is once again a long snippet because I cannot just be normal.
--
You heard a lot about Liandrin Sedai during your first year or two as a Novice.  There was a rumor, never confirmed but nonetheless ubiquitous, that a Novice had died under Liandrin’s tutelage not long before you had arrived.  As a result, she was no longer permitted to teach Novices.  Furthermore, it was suggested, Novices would do well to avoid her.  Reasons for this varied somewhat, from ‘lest they remind her of her very recent tragedy’ to ‘lest they become the next unwitting targets of her deadly ire.’
You’re sure you never saw her in all that time, though, and eventually you heard the story repeated less and less, only really trotted out when new students arrived to the White Tower.  You learned later that Liandrin had left the Tower for a long while after the incident of legend.  It’s common for sisters of the Red Ajah to take extended leave, and the unfortunate fate of the Novice in question had certainly not impeded her ability to perform the functions for which she is best-suited.
You have also learned since then that for every extended absence, there is a corresponding extended stay in the Tower, particularly for the powerful and influential.  Liandrin is quite popular, if perhaps controversial in some circles, and it has thus been impressed upon her how very much her talents are needed within these walls for the foreseeable future.
Nevertheless, you are nothing short of shocked to see her perched atop the teacher’s desk when you arrive for your afternoon lesson.  You glance out the window, perhaps to catch a glimpse of the dire emergency that must have incapacitated so many Aes Sedai that Liandrin has been deemed a suitable substitute.
Liandrin is technically allowed to teach Accepted students.  Technically.
Liandrin herself looks about as pleased as any of the Accepted.  She pays you no mind as you enter, her piercing gaze fixed on some imagined point on the far wall.  Her arms are folded, her lips are pursed, and it looks like she’s biting the inside of her cheek.  Given her storied reputation, this understandably puts most of the students ill at ease.
“No need to trickle in,” she says, so sharply that you notice a few students flinch.  “You’re all in the right place, I should think.  I am Liandrin Sedai, and I will be overseeing your practice for the afternoon.”
She says all of this as though each word causes her great distress, gaze still fixed somewhere above the students’ heads.
“I am unaccustomed to teaching, and it’s been a long while since I was Accepted, so you will have to forgive me my unfamiliarity,” she continues, but gives absolutely no impression that she is asking forgiveness for anything.  “Adeline Sedai was not generous enough to inform me which weaves you are currently studying.  Would anyone be so kind as to enlighten me?”
The room falls eerily silent.  You cast a surreptitious glance toward Briallyn, who is usually the sort to raise her hand at any opportunity.  She is gazing at Liandrin like she is something inhuman and incomprehensible.
You swallow your nerves and raise your hand.
Liandrin turns her head sharply.  “Yes?”
“Weaving Spirit,” you say, although your voice falters under her exacting gaze.
“Weaving Spirit,” she echoes with a mocking lilt, inclining her head and smiling with false sweetness.  “Could our esteemed little sister perhaps narrow it down, just a bit?”
You feel your cheeks flush hot.  “The basics, I mean,” you stammer.  “Just starting.”
Liandrin scoffs.  “I suppose I should have known better than to expect anything more than that,” she says with a theatrical sigh.  “What was our dear Adeline Sedai having you do, just…” she waves vaguely, “pick at threads of Spirit out of nowhere?  No direction, no purpose?  No wonder it’s taking so long.”
She points at you, and you nearly startle out of your skin.  “Come forward.  Since you’ve been kind enough to volunteer.”
You can hear a low whisper of fear starting up around you as you obey her command, feel the eyes of your fellow Accepted upon you although you keep your head bowed low.  You are shy and unused to this kind of attention.  You can feel your face flushing all the way up to your ears.
Liandrin is perfectly average in stature, yet somehow seems to tower over you through her presence alone.  She ducks her head to catch you eye, and now her subtle smile bears no tinge of mockery.  “Look,” she bids you, gesturing out toward the classroom.
You attempt, quite unsuccessfully, to swallow down your embarrassment.  You look.
“Your classmates are afraid of me,” Liandrin observes, with the kind of neutrality one expects of a particularly uninteresting weather forecast.  “No doubt you’ve all heard stories about me.  Or, should I say, one in particular?”
You glance surreptitiously in Liandrin’s direction.  Her eyes are alight with cruel amusement.  She is enjoying this.  She leans in toward the class, as though to share a secret.  “Let me assure you that what you’ve heard…is absolutely true.”
The whole class visibly recoils, and the frightened whispers culminate in horrified gasps, followed by a deafening silence.
“Look at your classmates,” says Liandrin.  “The same way you would look for threads of fire or water.  Look for their fear.”
A part of you considers that you can see their fear perfectly well without looking very closely at all.  Another part of you is preoccupied with the way Liandrin’s eyes light up watching people recoil from her.  But you know from experience that Liandrin has very little patience, and she will not be pleased if she has to repeat herself.
You tear your eyes away from Liandrin and look, focusing on the class as a whole rather than trying to stare at any one person.  You squint and tilt your head, think of the frightened whispers and all the different versions of Liandrin’s story you have heard repeated over the years.  Some of your classmates are much younger than you, and their precocious talents allowed them to graduate to the rank of Accepted sooner than most.  They must have heard the story of the Novice who died under Liandrin Sedai’s tutelage very recently, and they do not have the benefit of experience to tell them that Liandrin means them no actual harm.
You think you start to see it then, something red and wrong hanging about them, brighter in some places than in others.  On instinct you reach out to pull at the threads.
You are not a talented channeler.  Threads do not respond well or quickly to your beckoning.  But the threads do come to you, slowly, and in this aspect alone, Liandrin is endlessly patient.
“A useful trick, to draw upon strong emotion,” says Liandrin.  Her words are for the benefit of the class, but she speaks quietly, and she is standing close enough to you that her voice makes you shiver.  “Spirit is that which is not strictly tangible, and yet you can feel it, can’t you, when there is a room full to the brim with terror?”
You can see the change in some students then, the ones who understand that this was, at least in part, a play upon their emotions in an unusual effort to educate.  You see the shift not in their faces but in the threads you are attempting to weave, a subtle change in the color and shape as fear gives way to confusion, or brightens into excitement.
You can’t help but wonder what others see, when they look at the color and shape of your own emotions.
