Genuinely spending 2 hours a day just prepping the fiber, RIP

To be fair at least a third of that time is pushing the executive function button so I can start the next nest. They're unfortunately one of those activities that has enough steps that each one feels like it's own separate thing, so I have to Start Task each damn time. So there's a 5-10 minute cooldown between them.

Got 9 nests, I think (on top), middle is some fleece that's already had a lot of locks picked out so it's kind of jumbled, bottom is combing waste.

#That's how all fiber prep is for me... I bet if I was actually medicated it'd go faster #but what can you do. #anyway ive done similar things. 2021 tdf i was carding rolags as i went #but those are so much faster !!! like 2 minutes at most and usually closer to 30 seconds for a rolag that takes #around the same amount of time to spin as a nest of top #meanwhile the nests are 10 minutes each IF i have already picked the locks. which ive started doing bc it feels a little faster #and earlier this year i was spending an hour to an hour and a half before work every day combing southdown babydoll for sock yarn #but i was also spinning that up on supported spindles (i spin 3x slower on those than on my wheel) and over the course #of like a 10+ hour shift #so it felt a lot more reasonable #im combing more of this shetland per day than i was the southdown for sure #but yeah it spins up so much faster that its like. whole morning: combing #tiny but nice part of afternoon: actually spinning the top #idk a ton about how ancient people prepared their wool... definitely need to find some info bc it would be fascinating to know #but carding cloth is a pretty recent development in the grand scale of how long humans have kept sheep #so.... yeah i can imagine youd need like 4 kids combing the wool just to keep up with one experienced spinner #or else that one spinner is spending all damn morning prepping wool #its not a great nighttime activity bc if you cant see real well then your prep really suffers #easier to spin in the near dark than prep in the near dark by a long shot #idk ! cool to think about #im rly intruiged by sally pointers video on that blackthorn hand hackle thing (i cant remember the name RIP) #feels like it could comb wool too ? or at least you could try and then make something better when that failed #but a comb of some kind is just gonna be the easiest thing to make if nothing else ... #palm comb #tour de fleece #tour de fleece 2023 #wool prep

unironically like. i do think limiting my time on social media has bettered me. i do feel like i do less doom scrolling and fearing that i’m missing out on stuff. but i’m still struggling a little bit with feeling like. i’m unable to keep friend groups. i tried a new fc in xiv but it didn’t wholly work out, and i’m still kind of feeling like there’s something wrong with me socially.

time for a new Big Project!

I think I've talked abt this before, but I have wanted to make (=spin, weave, sew) a wool coat for myself for. hmm. A while.

And I finally finished the yarn so I guess time to tell y'all about it!

Doesn't fit in any of my baskets, so it lives in this Ikea bag for now. It's so much - just under 3 kilos, 2.8 maybe? of handspun 2-ply

So much! What do we have here?

German merino! My favourite fibre, easy to spin, robust, incredibly versatile. This is the only batch I dyed, the rest is natural colours.

This is I think Gotland lambswool? Would have to look that up. I got a massive fleece of this. I didn't exactly measure any of my yarn, but it's all fingering to light fingering weight. It's so soft and fluffy! This is for the weft.

And finally, Portuguese merino (iirc).

idk how well it shows on the pictures, but there is such an amazing difference between worsted (left) and woolen (right) yarn.

I have been spinning for this - forever. Well over a year, whenever I felt like working on it (which wasn't very consistently). Ant the start of this year I had the vague idea fo finish the coat by Christmas, but then of course, pirates happened and I became obsessed with different things.

I still hope I'll be able to. wear it this winter, but we'll see :)

Finally finished with my latest custom doll!

It's a glam take on Minty from My Little Pony (G3), specifically A Very Minty Christmas.

Lots of details went into this doll, and it took far and away longer than any doll I've made before. I lost track, but the hours spent easily go above 20.

Details about the construction below the cut!

Face and body

I started with a Vandala Doubloons base for the face mold, which I sliced open 😱 to create my first set of inset eyes. I just love Vandala's face mold, it's very unique and cute compared to others in the MH line (My base stock box dolls have all been super well loved, btw, so no I didn't destroy a mint in box Vandala. I would NEVER!!) The body was a headless stock box Abby, but I only decided to do that after trying and failing to do a peg-leg transplant on Vandala. It didn't matter, in the long run, since I was going to be painting the entire body anyway. Lots of coats of mint green artist's acrylic, cut with lots of flow builder medium, and about three coats of Mr. Super Clear between those coats of paint, and I had my base.

I knew the silhouette and hair I wanted for Minty from my earliest concept sketches, and looking at them I realized: this silhouette won't look "right" on a standard MH slimline. So it was time for some Apoxie sculpt! I gave her some bust and butt implants, as well as some hip and tummy augmentation to round things out in a way that would better serve the design. Then, more paint and Mr. Super Clear to make the body cohesive.

Hair

The hair is entirely acrylic yarn. Not only wefts, but I also achieved the voluminous high pony look by needle-felting a ratted base, around which the rest of the wefts were attached. Then, I had to curl them. This was by far one of the most time consuming parts of the process, but I love the outcome. I used the hot chopstick technique. That is, heating up a metal chopstick with a straightening iron, and twisting individual strands of hair around it. It keeps the hair from scorching, and allows for some truly tiny, glamorous curls.

Clothes

The gown is hand-sewn, but definitely not removable lmao. It's hard to get such a tight fit on such a tiny doll without using stretch material, and I was using costume satin, so I just glued the bodice down once I'd done all I could with darts and alterations.

The skirt went through a few iterations, with different colors being layered in for the trumpet skirt including sheer mint green, sheer white chiffon, and different shades of pink satin. And yes, those were all fully sewn as I made the decision. 😭 Eventually I went with three tiers in the basic hot pink as the rest of the dress, figuring I would add the contrasting color pops with beading.

Oof, the beading. It was a lot of hand beading. Bedazzling? idk what to call it. All I know is that many hours were spent over a pile of rhinestones and beads with a wax pencil and some Liquid Fusion glue, listening to extremely long YouTube video essays as I worked. The more I added, the more I WANTED to add, and I decided not to pull punches.

I added some volume to the skirt with stiff tulle and a half-assed cage skirt made of armature wire. You can't see it, anyway - it's the EFFECT that matters. Speaking of things you can't see, she's just wearing some unembellished hot pink G1 Draculaura boots. 😂

Details

The accessories, including the peppermints and the Here Comes Christmas Candy Cane, were all made with Apoxie sculpt, hand painted/detailed, and varnished. Perhaps my favorite little detail are her "acrylics," which I added using a technique I saw Hextian use in a video - you touch a dab of hot glue to the doll's finger, then pull it back slowly, and trim once dry. This creates a really fun effect of fake nails.

So yeah. This doll was a labor of love, and I'm so glad I didn't take any half-measures along the way. I'm very proud of her. Hope you like her!

One more note: YES I realize the irony of not having any SOCKS involved in an MLP Minty design. I really do regret this, and agonized over it a LOT. I considered making a “pajamas version” of this same doll so I could do a socks-themed outfit, before I realized the dress would need to be glued on.

Not fandom things, but I am still working on my yarn project (shawl? lap blanket? idk, I'm having fun).I had to pull a bunch of lines to fix something, but I'm making progress again and loving how this is coming out.

Writing-wise, I just finished a first draft of an Exchange piece (hard-won) and I've been looking over a Zevwen thing I started a few months ago. The research bit is the reason I set this aside instead of finishing it a few months ago, but the heart of it is steady.

This is part of one of my favorite scenes so far (700ish words):

Water sloshed in the tub behind her. Zevran’s fingertips brushed her elbow when he stepped past, and she adored the comfort of it even as she silently willed him not to ask. 

“Do you know,” he said. “I know that we were convinced to leave the alienage, but—what do you think of find a way into that clinic in the morning?” 

Wen turned to look at him, running the cloth through her wet hair, and he smiled at her. 

“I do think we can take them, should we bring the correct people,” he added. “These words about some sort of illness are clearly all lies, whatever they say.”

Oh—the realization had hit her more than once, swift and unerring as an arrow to the chest, but she had it again now: she loved him. Perhaps she would explain the feeling away later, perhaps she would shove it off for some other day. It didn’t matter. But right now—right now his hair clung to his face in a distinctly unattractive way, he was making an odd face while he dried his neck, and the skin on his hands was wrinkled with water. 

He was the most beautiful thing in the whole of Thedas and she loved him unequivocally. 

“Alright,” she said, and turned away again. “Yes. We should.”

Her hand ached when she pressed her thumb to the wound, but at least it had stopped bleeding. Wen bound it before she climbed into bed. She’d hesitated to ask Zevran to stay—after all that, she’d no idea what she might say or do next—but he’d followed her to the massive bed anyway and she hadn’t had the heart to tell him to leave her. Instead, she twined her bare legs with his and wrapped her arm around his waist. If she laid her head on his chest, she couldn’t see him looking at her. 

They’d doused the lights. Only the warm light of the fire remained, dancing over the fine golden hairs over his chest. Wen watched them, listening to the steady beat of Zevran’s heart. His hand lifted and stroked through her hair after they’d been lying still for several moments. It felt nice, soothing, relieving some of the ache at the base of her neck. Just as she’d begun to doze, he spoke again. 

“I will not ask,” he said, and she tensed. “I said that I will not, mi vida, unless you tell me otherwise. But—why did you not tell me?” 

One of Nelaros’s eyes had been open. She remembered that. One open, one missing. You could see all the way through it to the stone floor beneath. When she’d taken the ring from his hand, she’d wondered if it would fit perfectly inside, as if it had always been meant to frame a wound rather than adorn a hand. 

“I didn’t know how,” she said, and it was the truth. She still didn’t know how and she’d already done it. But—it wasn’t the whole truth. She’d gone this far without outright lying to Zevran; there was no sense in stopping now. 

“I—didn’t want you to see me any differently.” 

“Truly? After everything I have told you?” 

There was a rumble of a chuckle in his chest. Wen steeled herself and lifted her head to look at him. His eyes glinted in the firelight, flashing gold, and as hard as she searched she could find no recriminations in them. 

“Alright,” she said at last. “It was stupid.” 

“I did not say so,” he pronounced, pressing a hand to his chest. 

Wen bared her teeth at him and he laughed at her, tipping his head back against the pillows. She loved his laugh, even when he was laughing at her; she loved the long line of his throat and the way he smiled at her when he didn’t think she was watching and she loved his grace, loved the way he wove through a battlefield like he anticipated every move of his opponent. She loved his hand in hers and the way he smelled and she loved him. 

She loved him. 

“I hate you,” she said, and tucked her face against his neck so she could nuzzle the soft skin there.

I probably knit the body of this like 5+ years ago now, but it is finally a usable object :) and I even did some decent finishing work rather than slap some ties on and call it done‐-sewed the sides together using blanket stitch, added the crochet border in trans colors, and plied some laceweight cotton I had into a decent cord. Also sewed the pocket in. Probably will be another project bag ? Idk.

Other finished objects from the last couple of days. Didn't think to take before pictures sadly.

The basket looked basically identical; I ran out of yarn there and then tossed it in the moving box last year rather than deal with it, so this time I just sewed in the ends. Might felt it later depending on what I decide to put in there.

The drawstring bag was I think partially frogged and then snarls prevented me from frogging the rest. Decided to fix it up instead. Works great, should do more totally mesh bags honestly, they stretch so well.

And the towel also looked much the same; I started it maybe 2 years ago, knit for a whole, got bored, put it away. This time I just cast off, sewed in some ties so it can be secured, and sewed in the ends.

Feels just crazy enough to work.... you do 99% of the work in the distant past, and then get so ashamed you bury it deep where you will never find it, find it anyway after several years--but enough time has passed that you can't remember what you hated about it in the first place, and hey--you could have a brand new towel in half an hour if you just sew in some ends... crazy...

been learning to knit last several days (since saturday, i think? ish) and it's going pretty smoothly. learned purling last night and having some issues with twisted stitches but i think. i think i've got it. i have one long and ugly rectangle i'm just working on until i get sick of it/decide it's time to learn binding off. it's sort of fun just having like...one long progress bar lol (since it's literally all the knitting i've done barring one row of casting on/knit stitch that immediately fell off the needle and was lost forever. rip) i tend to get too invested in projects so doing "beginner projects" is not my style, better to practice rectangles and techniques for a few weeks and then start making stuff -- that's what I did with crochet and imo it worked really well

my instinct was to do continental style since it felt more like crochet but I quickly realized that was actually a detriment - hands were getting confused between crochet and knitting, leading to all kinds of issues (twisted. fucking. stitches. my bane.) english style and keeping the yarn off to the right are really helpful for like...having a mental divide that goes "okay i'm knitting now!" and i suspect it'll help keep me from getting confused when i crochet too. i could only do about two rows at a time when i started (it's like a 26 stitch row, i just casted on until i was like yep looks good....) but now i've moved up and can do several rows before needing a break (i didn't count but idk, 7-8? that's good progress for me haha). i think i have more arm/elbow pain than finger/hand like i do with crochet, which might just be a side effect of my needles being on the long side and not very good with maneuvering them yet.

i'm not expecting to get as into/advanced in knitting as i am (and want to continue doing) with crochet at least not right now - crochet projects are more up my alley (amigurumi etc, just tend to like the designs better, not interested in making huge/yarn eating/nice yarn projects like clothes yet) but i like knowing both. i wanna knit doll clothes :)

rn i'm using the needles i had lying around (ones i got in eighth grade art class and some others that came in yarn lots) but when i have an idea of what i want i'll need to buy more sizes (i have...one Big needle, a lot of tiny needles, and this one single set that's actually workable for worsted/dk weight yarn haha). but i got yarn and stitch markers etc for days already, so that's nice

all that aside i've been having fun but i have an unassembled pumpkaboo amigurumi i need to put together, and i just found the absolutely perfectest botw zelda pattern of my dreams for $1, so will probably be wobbling back over to crochet for a bit at some point soon - have to split up my hand-demanding hobbies :')

I understand what "A bad workman blames his tools" is supposed to be, but y'all, I've gotta tell you--sometimes it's the tools.

Maybe this is intuitive for most people but if you're autistic like me and took this Too Literally (tm) then this one's for you.

Like, I thought I was hopeless at doing makeup until I got a good eyeshadow primer. It turns out it's literally impossible to get eyeshadow to blend smoothly without a primer. And them omg, when I got some higher quality shadows that were more pigmented, all of a sudden it takes 1/3 the time to get the effect that I want.

And paint. We're taught the basic "primary colors" and "through mixing you can get any color!!" and this is A LIE. It's not until you get into color theory and actual pigment physics that you learn that there are orangey-reds and a purply-reds and finding a physical pigment for a true, neutral-as-possible red is actually quite rare and expensive.

And if you mix an orangey-red with blue to try to make purple, you're going to make a poopy purple because purple + orange are complimentary colors and make brown, so no matter what you do, you'll have a brown+purple mixture.

So even to mix your colors from primaries, you're going to need both a orangey-red and a bluey-red, and a greenish-yellow and an orangey-yellow, and a greenish-blue and a purpley-blue.

And that's not to mention that there are brilliant violets you just won't get by mixing pigments, so you'll need specialized pigments for those too.

And don't even get me started on BRUSHES. The amount of control that you can get out of a quality brush is so much more than a cheap one.

The same principles apply for colored pencils and pens and yarn and clay and like... idk, a lot of things.

I feel like I tried several hobbies with just the most miserably cheap shit and felt bad at them and didn't pick them up, until I had the occasion to try with something of sufficient quality and it was like--wow, this is actually fun! I'm not miserable at this trying to do basic things!

Obviously there's a middle ground here--I never had to get the top-of-the-line item to have a better experience. My primer is the Sephora house brand. Synthetic paint brushes are great for most people who don't plan to use them heavily.

Spending more money on tools has diminishing returns, but those initial returns over the most basic stuff? Big!! Important!!

One of the great things about the internet is that you can ask experts what tools are actually worth spending money on--just try to NOT ask people who 1) have way more money than you and so haven't thought about it or 2) are actively trying to sell you something.

I just wonder how many people think they're bad at painting because they've only tried with the absolutely destroyed and shitty brushes at a wine and paint night place, y'know?

So. Sometimes it's the tools!! It's okay to spend a little more on things that make your hobby more accessible and enjoyable.
