Minoan Heanos
The distinctive open-front dresses worn by Minoan women are probably even more iconic than the multi-layered kilts. Over time, there's dispute whether the garment is one piece or a separate bodice and skirt, but currently the one-piece theory is in ascendance.
Tumblr media
The word heanos is derived from the Linear B logogram *146, wehanos. The wes- prefix, which is the squiggle in the middle, indicates a garment. Bernice Jones believes that this logogram represents the garment worn by Minoan men and women.
Tumblr media
Marie-Louise B. Nosch, The Textile Logograms in the Linear B Tablets, pp 133-138
More research and construction below the cut:
The theory that the garment is a full-length tunic is further supported from imagery from the time, like these figures from the c. 1400 BCE Hagia Triada Sarcophagus. This detail from the sarcophagus shows three figures in some kind of procession, 2 women and 1 man. The woman at left wears a tunic with some kind of pelt as a skirt, and the other 2 figures wear tunics without anything over them, showing that they are one continuous, ankle-length garment.
Tumblr media
Some of the most important resources for interpreting how the heanos was constructed comes from the two women depicted in the House of the Ladies in Akrotiri, wherein the side seams of the tunic are clearly visible running along the side of the body and under the arm.

Diagrams from Bernice Jones' book Ariadne's Threads, p. 82, via Gorgeous Tangents
The heanos itself is made of 3 pieces of fabric: 1 back and 2 fronts. These diagrams show a concave hem like on the labrys-shaped kilt but I went with a straight hem, which is an equally valid option. The end of the sleeves are level with the edge of the hem at the widest point. This would probably be the width selvage-to-selvage on the fabric, being narrower than fabric widths commonly are today. There are 4 seams: the shoulder seam, the two side seams, and a front seam (optional, but recommended if you would prefer not being arrested.) It may be tempting to fold the fabric across the shoulder, so the only sewing is side seams and a neck hole, but this makes a weaker garment overall. I used this as a shortcut in my fitting muslin and it caused tears and weak points at the three points of the front opening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my fabric was a lightweight, moderately loose-woven cotton with a supplementary weave pattern in squares and diamonds. Linen or wool would have been more accurate but also? much harder to find from online quilting stores selling fabric for affordable prices. The main fabric is dark orange and the pattern is made out of pink/lilac threads. This weaving technique resulted in a LOT of long floats (unsecured expenses of thread) on the back--you can see how the wrong side of the fabric is much pinker than the right side. These floats could snag easily if I wasn't careful, so while it made a very effective visual for this tunic, I do not think that this fabric type would be viable for everyday wear. I'll leave it to people who actually know about weaving to ponder what more accurate weaving techniques would be.
Construction
The overall pattern is basically a T-shaped tunic, and the most important measurements are shoulder circumference, shoulder width, bust circumference, and the shoulder-waist length. In addition, you need measurements for the bicep, waist, shoulder-navel length, and hip circumference. After working out the fit with a muslin, I ended up with this pattern, 1 of 4 identical quarters.
Tumblr media
Your first impulse may be to make the tunic very close-fitting, since the depictions in frescoes are skin-tight, but since the pattern has no added gusset this is a recipe for Cannot Move Arm. So I gave a very generous curve under the arm, which also made the dress look better when my arms were down, avoiding armpit wrinkles. I continued that ease into about an extra 2 inches added on to my waist measurement and plenty of extra space around my hips so that I could do exciting things like Sit Down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sewed the shoulder and side seams using the machine, and felled the raw edges on each side of the seam by hand with a whipstitch. I foided back the front edges of the v-neck instead of cutting them, which was a tip I got from the Gorgeous Tangents blog. This strengthens the neckline and keeps it from stretching, and also means that everything can be readjusted if you have size fluctuations or just want to modify the tunic into something more or less modest.
I whipstitched the front edges together by hand--the contrasting selvage didn't matter because it would be covered up by trim. I ended up cutting the tunic a liiiittle shorter than I wanted, so I finished it with some leftover bias binding instead of hemming it to conserve as much length as possible.
Trim
Tumblr media
I custom-ordered the woven tape trim from Long Creek Mercantile. Both are made of wool--the "header band" and the hem trim are 1 1/4" wide and the center-front and cuff trim are 3/8" wide. I observed that most images of the Minoan heanos show trim with two colors at most, in a simple geometric or linear pattern, so I consciously restrained myself from ordering anything more elaborate. The clothing on Minoan frescoes is characterized by strongly contrasting colors, so blue trim was the most obvious, and best-looking option. Orange tunics with blue trim appear multiple time in art like the "Dancing Lady" fresco from Knossos:
Tumblr media
Dr. Jones suggests that the band across the shoulder would historically have been a header band--a band of threads woven at the beginning of a project in order to properly space the warp bands (see her diagram at the beginning). That may be a reason why the shoulder trim often depicted under the front or sleeve trim, as shown above. Regardless, the trim almost always coordinates.
I sewed on the shoulder trim by hand, the sleeve and hem trim by machine, and the center-front trim with a combination of both.
Tassels
Many frescoes from Akrotiri and Hagia Triada show the ends of the supposed header band turned into tassels. This embellishment is not universal among heanoi, as you can see from the "Dancing Lady" above, but it does add a fun little something!
Tumblr media
(yes, my Lounging Pants are very fashionable)
I turned the excess ends of the shoulder "header band" trim into fringes, knotting the yellow ones into a lattice and turning the blue yarns into tassels. The lattice-tassel appears on a fresco from Hagia Triada:
Tumblr media
Reproduction of fragmentary fresco from Room 14 at Hagia Triada, Crete
The saffron gatherers from Akrotiri shown below have clearly displayed fringes at the ends of their sleeves. The one on the left has red fringes that appear knotted or ravelled/unravelled in an undulating pattern, and the one on the right has fringes that may be either beaded with papyrus-shaped leaves or cut into short tassels.
Tumblr media
Another option is leaving the fringes loose, as seen in the Akrotiri frescoes from Xeste, room 3:
Tumblr media
The final garment was super comfy, actually! It's much simpler to create than I thought it would be based on the frescoes, which made it all feel pretty magical when everything came together. I did think it was a little unusual how tailored this garment is, and the potential waste of fabric that comes from a shaped garment, especially compared to how later ancient greek clothing was mainly rectangles. I don't know enough about bronze-age and earlier clothing to have any idea how typical this was, since I'm extremely Not an expert on this subject, but am always open to learning more!

Snapshots of Beyoğlu
by Dimitra Makri, ANAMED Post-Doctoral Fellow (2021–2022)
Tumblr media
How could someone paint Beyoğlu with only a few colors or describe it in a few, simple words? I will never forget the vivid descriptions of my great-grandmother, Helen, who seemed to have erased from her memory all the unpleasant events that marked the Greek community and her life. She was always talking about “her” Istanbul and her neighborhood in Beyoğlu with great nostalgia, and one of her dreams was to come back at some point.
I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to visit, for the second time, the places where she grew up, wander the same streets she played in as a child, and light a candle in the Orthodox churches where she prayed. For Helen, Istanbul was her home, her soul, her world! For me, it is a part of her memories and thoughts, a world full of colors, smells, dancing, and praying.
From the first days of my stay here, I felt like a member of this multicultural family that embraces people with different languages, beliefs, and identities. I was immediately impressed by the marriage of Eastern and Western elements, as well as strong contrasts. Every day, thousands of people from all over the world roam the Grand Avenue of Pera, which starts in Taksim Square and ends at the northern end of Galata.
I usually start my day with a quick visit to the church of The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, commonly known among the Greeks of Istanbul as Panagia tou Peran or tou Stavrodromiou (i.e., at the Crossroads), which is almost hidden at the end of an alley off İstiklâl Caddesi. The diffuse and sweet silence makes me forget that I live in the very heart of the city! I feel very moved when I open the door of this church, since I remember the last time that I saw there the nice colleague and former fellow of ANAMED, Vangelis Kechriotis, who left this life so young and is now resting at the Greek-Orthodox cemetery in Şişli. I immediately fix my attention on the Russian-style wall paintings, which depict the lives of Saint Mary and Jesus Christ. Nowadays, the journalist Dr. Symeon Soltarides, who comes from an old family of Istanbul, is always willing to give me details about the history of the church or the traditions and legends regarding its construction. Sometimes, I make a stop at the splendid church of the Holy Trinity (Hagia Triada), the main Greek Orthodox church of Beyoğlu, whose belltowers are visible from afar, especially from Taksim Square. At the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, you can see Orthodox people of many different ethnicities, not only Greeks, but also Serbians, Bulgarians, Romanians, Russians, Ukrainians, and others, who come for religious purposes, as well as to admire the majesty of the neo-baroque church with the neo-gothic façade and its beautiful icons.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
The interior of Panagia tou Peran
But prayer in Beyoğlu can take place everywhere, regardless of someone’s religious beliefs, either in an Orthodox or Catholic church or a mosque. What matters above all is the respect for those who make an address to the Supreme Being! The domes of the churches, the minarets of the mosques, the sound of the bells, and the prayers delivered by the imam create a unique atmosphere, which one can hardly find in any other city of the world.
In an alley of Beyoğlu, I hear the voices of the students at the Greek school Özel Zoğrafyon Rum Lisesi, where love for education and passion for the preservation of this historical monument remains lively after about 129 years. The director, Mr. Ioannis Dermitzoglou, continues his predecessors’ work with patience, affection, and, first and foremost, the aspiration to preserve tradition and pass on the torch to newer generations. I had the luck to spend some hours at the school. A harmonic blend of traditional and modern elements is fairly visible, and the responsibility to be a student or a teacher in this ‘’sacred’’ place, where important people studied in the past, is enormous. On the other hand, this haven, which hugs the younger generations, makes us feel proud of the pupils and instructors, who work there zealously and selflessly.
Tumblr media
The main entrance of the Özel Zoğrafyon Rum Lisesi
A few hours later, Beyoğlu “changes face and character.” Sometimes, I form the impression that I am immersed in a chaotic world, where I cannot move and breathe. A series of images unfolds in front of my eyes and makes me feel confused: tourists are frantically taking pictures, as if this world will be lost tomorrow, others hurry and push me in order to find a place in one of the central patisseries and restaurants, while youths enjoy their drinks in the balconies of pubs, in the alleys, and even on the sidewalks. Furthermore, I feel very impressed when I observe the different sense of fashion and style of pedestrians who walk İstiklâl Caddesi. Some remain devoted to the traditional way of dressing, and others are up with the latest trends, capturing the eyes of passers-by. I can also see elegant, modern women, sometimes covered with their colorful hijab, others who are dressed in burka, and some who prefer to be totally revealing, leaving no room for imagination. Sometimes, I cannot discern the boundaries between the optional choice or the conventions of society; I cannot perceive the hidden conservatism or the far-fetched modernism; I cannot perceive the human limits. However, the dancing and singing, which begin with the pedestrians who band together in smaller or larger groups on the spur of a moment, melt away the feeling of anxiety and help people feel like a big family, where any difference is annihilated. Time stops in the middle of the street, and I can forget the stress of a busy day. Nevertheless, I always have the same query that remains unanswered: “How and why did this party start?” It has to do, most probably, with the urge of people to approach each other or their need to paint the town red in difficult times!
I try to find a traditional coffee shop in a beautiful corner of Beyoğlu, where locals and tourists can slowly savor a cup of aromatic Turkish coffee or tea whilst enjoying the smoke of their shisha. And the taste of the coffee is better when you share it with a good friend, discuss with the frequenters of the coffee shop, or enjoy the company of a cute alley cat that seeks attention and a good belly rub, and —why not?— a piece of food, if it is lucky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Α few meters farther, the picture changes as one comes across large coffeehouse chains. It is common to see a large queue of people of all ages that wait impatiently in line for their beverage of choice, and unavoidably, the warm atmosphere of a cozy place is replaced by the quick and impersonal rhythm of the city.
As I walk, the smell of various delicacies from Turkish restaurants and patisseries awakens my memories and takes me back to the clean and neatly organized kitchen of my beloved Helen, where the use of butter was dominant. For her, the well-prepared and delicious food was a very nice way to bring the family together. It was a small expression of gratitude to the relatives, friends, and neighbors who visited her. I do not know if I inherited her talent for cooking, but I really enjoy playing the role of food taster with my friends when we visit the Turkish restaurants and patisseries of Beyoğlu. The taste of baklava and almond (Keşkül) and rice (Sütlaç) puddings remind me how difficult it is to make something so delicious with simple ingredients!
Tumblr media
Cooking here is an art: it requires talent, skill, and imagination, and, above all, love for life. However, the mixture of the strong smell of lamb, fish, and spices hovering in the atmosphere sometimes makes me feel a bit dizzy, but this sensation is also etched in my memory, and I can figure out exactly where I am even with my eyes closed.
Beyoğlu means a lot to me; it is like a big box with many black and white, as well as colored, photos, a bottle full of perfumes, a painting with many colors, a world without a start and an end!

Kaloxylos village is one of the most picturesque villages of Naxos, located in the lush Tragea Valley.
Accessible through the main road from Chora, it is well-known for its pretty houses and especially for the rare flowers in their courtyards.
Other spots to admire are the Church of Agia Triada with byzantine icons and a nearby olive mill, fully renovated and open to the public.
The surrounding hills are also ideal for trekking!
Thank you Katerina Mylona for the amazing photo. Share your photos and memories from this beautiful village in the comment section!

Cinnamon and Cocoa
au- each time you recieve a scar, it shows up on your soulmate’s body as a tattoo made of your favorite flower in your favorite color
—————
Cudite is twenty when it happens. A ring of light blue forget-me-nots tightly woven around the shoulder joint on her right arm.
She’s heard of soulmates before, back home with her sisters. Nialie would laugh over each little pinpoint of soft pink hyacinths and Nessa would trace the olive green desert roses that circled her legs.
Cudite just hadn’t seen any on her before.
It was reassuring, to know that she had a soulmate, but it also made her nervous. What poor woman carried her scars?
Ari, Cudite knew, didn’t have a soulmate, and wore it proudly, boasting about how nobody in the universe bore her iconic scars, but in red-violet nightshade like shimmering blood.
Cudite knew nothing about Starburn, though. She’d joined the crew a week ago, and had kept mainly to the armory.
It took five months for Ari to make Cudite understand that Starburn had a distinctive line of deep blue daffodils on her arm, matching Cudite’s old battle scar exactly.
After that, the two of them spent hours in bed, fingers brushing over flowers and voices hushed.
———
Leith is five when the bright gold mark appears on her neck, four diamonds locked together.
She hides it until her second year of school.
From then on, she wears it proudly, sweeping her braid on the other shoulder and tugging away her furs.
After all, Celi (when they manage to visit each other; being an Empress, Leith doesn’t often hve the time) traces it over and over, pressing soft kisses to it and giving her necklaces to compliment it.
———
Lesterlas sees her friends with their flower marks, and she is bitter.
Anarin, Lily, and Eithilen all wear theirs happily, their husbands standing proudly beside them. Ethel (who was one of the loudest voices behind the destruction of the traditional romantic-only soulmates) smiles when Leina shows off the delicate silver snowdrops. Filrath and Triada laugh about theirs. Nimlon and Celti and Githonia all shake their heads, but they do it happily.
Lesterlas is the only bitter one.
She’s spent years creating a better world, done great things beyond imagination, saved countless lives, and yet destiny still turns a blind eye on her.
Is that her curse, then? To always be unimportant when it comes to what truly matters?
She’s fifty-eight when the crocuses bloom on her shoulder.
It doesn’t make her happy.
———
Ari, contrary to popular belief, actually has emotions other than ’chaos’ and ‘sarcasm’.
She watches Cudite and Starburn’s hands entertwine, and she stares at the ceiling all that night, refusing to let herself cry.
She sees Celi gently pressing a kiss to Leith’s neck, and she opens another bottle of Falirnese firejuice.
She watches Nialie and Githia place flowers in each other’s hair, and she has a hint of anger in her blade when she kills the next dictator.
It’s dangerous, she knows. Emotions and murder mix terribly.
But then Caroline has her partners over, and Ari nearly ruins a batch of poison.
It’s unfair to the others, she knows, to be jealous of their happiness.
And it’s making her imperfect.
An imperfect killer is a dead one.
Ari can’t feel emotion, some whisper in shadows.
But by Ekari, she wishes that were true.
———
Adlanniel is always too busy, despite what Darou and Aelas try to do.
What else is she meant to do? Caroline’s gone, Darou’s got the Academy to manage, Aelas has a singing competiton, there’s really nothing else for Adlanniel to do.
She’s not too busy, though, to notice the sharp streak of pain while she’s at her desk one day.
It isn’t her, and neither Darou and Aelas are in any position of danger while sitting on their beds, which only leaves one option.
Adlanniel may work herself too much, but the second Caroline gets home from the business trip, she turns off the holograms and dives onto her girlfriend, smothering her with affection and bandages.
Maybe she can take a little time off for cuddle piles, too.
