So I will find my fears and face them
Or I will cower like a dog
I will kick and scream or kneel and plead
I'll fight like hell to hide that I've given up

I was listening to this on my *streaming service of choice* this evening and realized - wait, I should break out the record instead!
I remember getting Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (in cd form) on my 16th birthday (yes, in 2005, shortly after it was released) and it was everything to me.
I grew up in...let's say...a very large metropolitan area in the US. Where do you go from there when you feel like you don't fit a big city? A bigger city! I was one of those kids who wanted to move to New York so badly. And this album was about that experience - I ate it up. I wanted it. (And I never got it, but I learned to find my own place. I suppose it's never too late.)
Now when I listen to it, it still holds up, and I still feel those twin themes of ~not fitting in the big city~ and ~there's a fucking bullshit war in the background of everything we do~ just shine through so well with the sweet acousticness of the whole thing. And I think the latter is so important - I know a lot of people were young, and are nostalgic for the 2000s, but to me it's the beginning of the downward spiral we're on.
It's difficult to pick one song off this album, but let's go with Poison Oak because it makes me a soft squishy mess. It did in 2005, and it still does...eighteen years later.
Poison oak, some boyhood bravery
When our telephone was a tin can on a string
And I fell asleep with you still talking to me
You said you weren't afraid to die
In Polaroids, you were dressed in woman's clothes
Were you made ashamed?
Why'd you lock them in the drawer?
Well, I don't think that I ever loved you more

the process of writing poems for a contest is just
write poem A which is not about any of the proposed themes
write poem B which is also not about any of the proposed themes
write poem C which is sorta about the proposed themes if you squint
edit poem from 4 years ago but it's also also not about any of the proposed themes
squint at poem C because it's probably as good as you're going to get
